Static loading teets of five nodular piles and four non-nodular piles were performed in Tianjin soft clayey soil in which measurements of axial force and movements were made. Distribution of shaft resistance and load-movment curves for pile head and pile toe are presented in this paper. The applicability of nodular piles to soft soil and their effectiveness are also discussed. Based on the comparison, it is concluded that nodular piles have an advantage over non-nodular piles mainly in contri­bution to shaft resistance. Dynamic testing was also conducted through R. P. T. for evaluating the service load of tested piles.

"Semi-Deep skirted foundations are considered to be a viable option for a variety of onshore and offshore applications. It is necessary to determine appropriate foundation configurations that allow loads to be transferred safely to the surrounding soil. For this purpose the bearing capacity and stability analyses subjected to combined vertical, horizontal and moment loadings must be found. In this paper the vertical undrained bearing capacity is estimated via finite element analyses. The circular skirted foundations with different geometries considering embedment depth (embedment ratio between 0-2) and size effects (diameter equals to 5, 10, and 20) have been studied. Stress field, kinematic mechanism accompanying failure and bearing capacity factors for total, end and shaft resistance in semi-deep foundations with various embedment ratios are investigated. Furthermore, two probable mechanisms i.e. internal flow and soil plug for estimating foundation capacity for design purpose in practice have been assessed. Comparisons with different research works including conventional methods, upper and lower bound approaches, and finite element analyses have indicated that the conventional methods underestimate the bearing capacity due to ignoring the significant role of shaft resistance. Determining appropriate economic foundation configurations to transfer loads safely to the surrounding soil is a major issue in geotechnical engineering. Shape and dimension of foundations, embedment depth, soil characteristics and applied loading, all affect the foundation performance. Recent studies have shown that for foundations with large breadth and of D/B between 1 to 4, kinematic mechanisms and failure modes are different from the two main types of foundation (i.e. shallow and deep). Therefore, D/B factor must not be considered as the only factor for defining foundation type. ""Semi-Deep foundations"" are another foundation category distinguished based on their performance. This relatively new concept is becoming increasingly an optimum alternative for shallow and deep foundations to support structures especially in accessible depth. The sandstone-type uranium deposits of the Gas Hills occur in the arkosic, lower Eocene Wind River formation on the southern edge of the Wind River Basin. The d S34 values of pyrite cement associated with uranium mineralization are-significantly lighter than values for syngenetic-diagenetic pyrite nodules, therefore the H2S responsible for the precipitation of the epigenetic pyrite and uraninite was produced [t]epigenetically. These values are much lighter than the values of H2S from neighboring oil fields. The presence of biogenic pyrite in meta-igneous Precambrian cobbles indicates that these cobbles are not remnants of former; vein-type uranium deposits.

CONSIDERABLE waste of oil and grease in lubricating motors and other machinery results from the use of bearings that are not totally enclosed. There is also the likelihood of damage to the bearing through the accidental introduction of grit or dust both in the oiling process and after, unless the cover is entirely dustproof. With the ordinary sleeve bearing that is only partly enclosed, it is generally easier for a careless attendant to cause trouble through neglect than with the ball bearing type, which from its design, must be totally enclosed to give effective service, and needs a minimum of attention. At one of the large mining companies which has taken a leading part in reducing unit costs and pioneering new developments in mining machinery, ball bearings have been gradually supplanting the conventional type of sleeve bearings on many of their motors, centrifugal pumps, and other machines in the mines. This innovation is not recent, as substitution of ball bearings on mine motors was first tried out by this company in 1909. Since then an increasing number of such bearings have been put in. They are now favored because of increased operating efficiency and reduction in lubrication costs.

The Society for Mining Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) has a long and proud history of being the world?s leading resource for the dissemination for technical information regarding the fields of mining and mineral extraction and processing. That reputation was met, and maybe even exceeded, with the programming for the Society?s 2014 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT Feb. 23-26. The meeting drew more than 6,700 attendees to the three-day conference that featured more than 90 technical sessions with 670 presentations. These sessions covered the breadth of the mining and minerals industry, but it was the so-called ?softer issues? that were discussed in the keynote session that kicked off the meeting. The keynote session, ?Community Engagement: Building Partnerships for Mining,? brought together some of the leading voices from the mining industry, as well as some of the top voices from nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that work in the mining sector. The common ground between the panelists was their dedication to working to ensure a social, economic and environmental balance in the development of mines. ?We wanted to bring these NGOs in to begin a dialogue to see how we can work together,? said SME President Jessica Kogel. ?This is a space that SME has not typically operated in, but one in which SME can bring a technical, scientific voice to the discussion. SME wants to play a leadership role in creating partnerships between the technical, social and economic areas that are crucial to the success of any mining project.? In today?s environment, finding mineral deposits and extracting the minerals in an economically viable manner is just one piece of an increasingly complex puzzle. Earning and maintaining a social license to operate requires careful consideration of local and global impacts. The industry often comes under intense scrutiny when a new project is proposed and, therefore, it must strive to meet the highest ethical and environmental standards. Success requires cooperation and collaboration between the industry, community and NGOs.

To beat capital costs of US$10 per pound of installed capacity has appeared as a major hurdle for the "third generation laterite nickel plants. Forecast costs are escalating. Where can savings come from? Ore beneficiation can reduce the tonnage rate to be processed. High pressure acid leach options include the use of indirect slurry heating and higher operating temperatures to reduce flow rates and residence time. Progress has been reported in atmospheric leaching. High counter current decantation circuit settling rates and high underflow densities reduce CCD costs. Metal recovery options include direct from leach solution to metal production, as used by Bulong and espoused by Goro, and indirect recovery as used by Moa Bay, Murrin Murrin and Cawse. Plant location impacts on the costs of tailings disposal, power and energy costs, supply of consumables and labour costs, among others. Final nickel and cobalt metal production routes are electrowinning, hydrogen reduction or some innovative routes being proposed for Goro. "BEAVERDELL IS IN the Interior Plateau of British Columbia, 25 miles east of Penticton, B.C. In 1897, small but rich silver-bearing veins were found on Wallace Mountain, 2 miles east of Beaverdell. Production from the camp, at first of a modest character, started in 1901 and has never ceased. Over 90 per cent of the values in the ores have been in silver. Remaining values present are in lead, gold, zinc, and cadmium.There have been four principal mines in the camp. A fifth is approaching production. The four mines lie within a northeasterly trending rectangle about 5,000 feet long and 2,000 feet wide, the fifth mine being at the northeast end. From southwest to northeast the mines, with their silver production to Sept. 30, l 955, are: -Wellington Mine - 1,463,948 oz.Sally Mine (includes Rob Roy claim) - 1,930,124 oz.Bell Mine - 3,460,815 oz.Lass Mine - 12,557,956 oz.Other production - 331,252 oz.Total, Beaverdell Camp - 19,744,095 oz.The camp is near the centre of an area geologically mapped in 19 l l by L. Reinecke for the Geological Survey of Canada (1). The rocks of the camp comprise:1. Beaverdell stock of porphyritic quartz monzonite;2. Westkettle batholith of quartz diorite;3. Wallace formation of tuffs and lavas.The Wallace formation borders the east edge of the camp, and has been intruded by the Westkettle batholith. The batholith is the host rock for the orebodies. The Wallace-batholith contact dips gently east. Some of the Beaverdell ores at depth, while in the batholith, are under Wallace formation mapped on the surface above.West of the camp, Reinecke mapped a stock one by one and one-half miles in size, of porphyritic quartz monzonite, which he considered much younger than the Westkettle quartz diorite (I). Recent petrographic work by White and Dolar-Mantuani (3) suggests that in the vicinity of the camp the Westkettle batholith is more quartz monzonite than quartz diorite, and little different in composition from the Beaverdell quartz monzonite. They suggest a consanguinity with the Westkettle batholith."

Maintaining satisfactory air quality in electrowinning tankhouses is problematic and costly, particularly as plant operating current densities have increased. Conventional approaches have not proved completely effective. These include the use of beads, hollow spheres, surfactants and coalescer devices. They require powerful ventilation systems to be installed. As workplace and environmental regulations become more stringent, containment of the acid mist at its source is more attractive. An electrode cap system based on this approach has been developed and tested in two commercial copper electrowinning tankhouses.

The efficiency of an ore-processing unit depends on the consistency of the characteristics of raw material entering the plant. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality, the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to feeding to the processing plant. The homogenization can generally be achieved by the bed blending operation. Given that the stockpiling and reclamation processes are very expensive, it is necessary to design the process in such a way as to minimize variabilities of specified properties of raw material. In this paper, for alternative stacking types, optimal stockpile geometry is found in three stages: First, stockpile input is simulated by sequential Gaussian simulation, and then the variance reduction ratios (VRR) as a criterion of stockpile efficiency are calculated for various stockpile geometry scenarios by a stockpile simulator written in FORTRAN. Second, multiple regression analysis is performed to model the VRR by the use of stockpile length, the number of layers and stacker speed as the independent variables. Finally, the model is an optimization problem. Decision variables are the stockpile length, the number of layers, stacker speed and stacking type. The genetic algorithms (GA) are used to minimize the VRR. The approach was demonstrated on data from an iron orebody. The problem was to reduce fluctuations of iron, silica, alumina and lime contents in the stockpile output. The results showed that the approach could be used for the bed blending design efficiently. The bed filtration of colloidal particles has been modeled by performing a differential particle balance. The balance considered the localized particle deposition rate to be the sum of three rate resistances: 1) mass transfer to a region near the surface; 2) adhesion onto a partially filled surface; and 3) resuspension from a partially filled surface. The differential particle balance equations, one for the free particles and one for the adhered particles, were solved by a finite difference algorithm. The results of this model are compared to experimental filter breakthrough curves.

Ranger Uranium Mine, surrounded by Kakadu National Park is located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics, 250 km east of Darwin, Northern Territory. A trial landform (TLF), measuring approximately 200 m by 400 m (8 ha) was constructed during late 2008 and early 2009 by Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), adjacent to the northwestern wall of the tailings storage facility at the Ranger Mine. A collaborative research program involving the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (eriss) and ERA, has been underway to measure long-term (five to ten year) rainfall, run-off, sediment and solute losses, seepage and vegetation establishment on the TLF (Saynor et al, 2012; Lowry et al, 2014). This paper reports on bed load losses from four erosion plots built on the TLF. These were achieved by physically isolating approximately 30 × 30 m areas from the surrounding landform on three sides with sidewalls along with an open polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe on the downslope side. Each plot was instrumented with a range of sensors. Two plots, 1 and 2 were constructed on waste rock material, while plots 3 and 4 were constructed on waste rock mixed with approximately 30 per cent lateritic material. Plots 1 and 4 had tube stock planted in early 2009, and plots 2 and 3 were initially planted by direct seeding in July 2009 and were infill planted with tube stock in January 2011.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Erskine, W D, 2016. Improved control of non-ferrous sintering operations requires the on-line measurement of sinter quality. No on-line measure of sinter quality is currently available, however, previous work has shown that the raw mix chemistry and peak sintering temperature determine the mineral phases formed and hence the resulting Blast Furnace behaviour. Control of these factors should therefore lead to improved quality control. In this paper, the development of a simplified heat and mass balance model of the Sinter Plant at Mt Isa is described. The model used available plant data to calculate raw mix composition and a simplified reaction scheme to predict sinter composition. The extent of reaction is inferred from the flue gas analyses. Off-line testing of a dynamic version demonstrated that actual plant performance could be predicted with reasonable accuracy.

Borehole televiewers are downhole inspection devices available for high-resolution imaging of a borehole wall following rock coring. Borehole televiewers should be considered by geotechnical engineers and geologists as a supplemental way of investigating rock for deep foundations. The optical televiewer (OTV) produces a digital optical image and the acoustic televiewer (ATV) utilizes reflected acoustic waves to produce images of the borehole walls. These devices can be utilized to examine soft or fractured zones in the rock mass, solution features, open joints or other voids not observable from traditional rock coring techniques. These devices along with computer post-processing can determine the strike and dip of joints, bedding planes, shear surfaces, or other structural features, eliminating the need for expensive oriented cores or manned downhole logging. An acoustic televiewer was utilized in the Fall of 2008 during the investigation phase for the I-70 New Mississippi River Bridge (I-70 MRB) in St. Louis, Missouri. Voids and fractures in the upper portion of the rock were described by prior consultants. Further investigation of these features was necessary to evaluate deep foundation options to support the main towers. Ten borings were drilled from a barge in the river at the two main tower pier locations. An ATV was utilized in each of the ten borings to produce images of the rock mass in the borehole and allow further investigation of the voids. Voids interpreted as solution features were readily identified in the ATV logs in multiple borings and at similar elevations, suggesting connectivity. Measurements of the voids? width, location in the borehole and orientation allowed a more thorough understanding of the potential impact the solution features may have on the planned deep foundations. An extensive grouting program was eliminated based on the ATV results.

ALL live producers and manufacturers of metals and alloys are investigating new uses for their products. The tin and tin-plate industry is no exception. One-third of all the new tin mined and refined is consumed in making tin plate. Several billions of cans are each year made from tin plate for the preservation of nearly 200 kinds of food. There are more than 500 tin-plate mills or individual stacks in the United States, which country makes more tin plate than all other countries combined and exports large quantities. As much as 1,800,000 tons of till plate has been made in a year in this country, and 28.000 tons of tin has been used in this period for this purpose. In sonic years a third of the till is so consumed; in 1933 it was half of the supply.

NONMETALLIC minerals (excluding fuels) arid their primary products produced annual in the United States have a value in excess of one billion dollars, or more than that of the metals, yet the lack of expert knowledge of some of the fundamental technical and economic aspects of this most important and complicated business is astonishing. This paper will deal with the economics of this non- metallic mineral field-the business of making money from producing these minerals. The incentive behind all business activity in a capitalistic economy is to make money-to plan so that each dollar invested in property, plant, equipment, services, and so on will return more than a dollar plus simple interest. Of course, business has social, civic, and national duties and responsibilities, but the fulfillment of these is largely dependent upon financial success.

In 1881, the first commercial pneumatic Bessemer-type converter treating copper matte was successfully introduced by Pierre Manhes at the Eguilles copper plant near Vedène in France. This development followed over a year of testing on a smaller scale at a foundry in Vedène, during which the vertical tuyeres of the conventional Bessemer converter had been successfully replaced by horizontal tuyeres in an effort to avoid the freezing of copper which had occurred in the bottom of the vessel having vertical tuyeres. The Manhes Converter, as it became known, was the first successful large-scale adaptation of the Bessemer concept of using compressed air blown into a melt for metal refining and treatment. Within a few years, Manhes Converters utilizing horizontal tuyeres in either the original type of vertical converter, or a later and more enduring horizontal barrel converter, were in operation at over a dozen copper smelters around the world. It was this process that Messrs Peirce and Smith essentially improved with the introduction of the larger converter which bears their name and the development celebrated at this Symposium. The present paper briefly traces the original development by Pierre Manhes in the early 1880s and which set the stage for the later Peirce-Smith adaptation. The paper observes that the original development by Manhes was in part driven by the need to reduce coal (energy) consumption and hence the production cost in order for Eguilles to remain competitive with the larger plants in Swansea, Wales, where a ready supply of cheap coal helped keep smelter treatment terms of the day low. These themes are eerily resonant of today where booming copper production in China has impacted the industry, and also where energy consumption, closely linked to today’s more familiar theme of ‘climate change’ remains an important challenge currently confronting the entire industry. The paper concludes with comments on these seemingly parallel situations today and offers some thoughts for the future.

Copper in recycling material is accompanied by various groups of metals: 1) Metals which are much more negative than copper, such as Fe, Al, Si, P, Be They are mainly removed by fire refining during the recovery of copper and leave the process in form of slag. 2) Metals which are more positive than copper or difficult to separate by fire refining and which are partly reduced together with the copper. These metals are for example As,. Sb, Ni, Ag, Pb, Zn, Sn. They are enriched in intermediate products and recovered from these or remain for their major part in the fire-refined copper and can be separated by electrolytic refining and recovered from the electrolyte or anode slime. This report describes the process of Hüttenwerke Kayser AG in Germany and illustrates how considerable returns of material are partly required to separate or recover associated metals. They are finally removed in saleable products.

The paper studied the diffusion process of nitrogen and characteristic distribution of iron impurities in the bottom of cast crystalline silicon ingot along the direction of crystal growth. According to the dynamics analysis of the decomposition of Si3N4 coating, the diffusion process of nitrogen into multicrystalline silicon ingot during casting process should be divided into three steps. The diffusion length of nitrogen in multicrystalline silicon ingot is 700 μm. The results of EDS analysis indicate that the distribution characteristic of iron in multicrystalline silicon ingot is concerned with the diffusion process of nitrogen in this length. Based on the above research results, the distribution model of iron in casting multicrystalline silicon ingot was established and verified by the experimental results.
