Mining in Argentina is diverse in terms of the number of minerals extracted from the country, but also in terms of the varied approaches and attitudes of mining investors and their trust in the country's individual provinces. Laws are discussed, investment attractiveness and taxation.

During the past decade, international mining companies have descended on South America. Countries like Chile, Brazil and Peru have seen billions of dollars in exploration and development funding turn their once meager mineral industries into mining giants that have become the envy of the world. Part of this outpouring of foreign investment in those countries has been because each has privatized its state-owned mining companies and has liberalized its foreign investment laws. In addition, they have rewritten their mining codes to encourage minerals development and passed new tax laws that have made natural resource development more attractive. Now these same international mining companies are turning their attention to Argentina. This a country that, like Chile, Brazil and Peru, has a wealth of largely un- tapped mineral resources. And Argentina wants its share of the foreign investment that its neighbors have enjoyed. With that in mind, ministers of Argentina's natural resource agencies came to Denver, CO to meet with mining executives and pitch their country's mining industry. The meeting, attended by about 200 people, was sponsored by the US Trade and Development Agency and organized by the World Trade Center Denver. Others involved were the Colorado Mining Association, the Colorado International Trade Office and the Secretariat of Industry, Commerce and Mining of Argentina. The following is a summary of a report on Argentina's mining industry. It was prepared by Anderson & Schwab Management Consultants and distributed to attendees as part of the meeting's program.

Geologic terranes in Argentina include potential mineralized environments from localized younger Precambrian cratonic outcrops through Paleozoic sequences, generally in the northwest or under younger cover, to the Mes[o] zoic-Cenozoic Andean Systems in western and southern Argentina. Argentina is self sufficient or nearly so in many metallic, nonmetallic, and energy commodities, and exploration in each of these categories is ongoing. Present production of precious metals (silver and gold) is important, and many recent discoveries of base metals, precious metals, alloy metals, and other mineral categories have been made. Economic trends, geologic environments, and commodity types important in actual exploration are described, and it is emphasized that extensive areas showing attractive alteration, geochemical, and geological anomalies, especially of porphyry, cordilleran vein, and epithermal characteristics, remain to be fully evaluated.

"The application of autoclave leaching technology for sulfide concentrates containing base and precious metals is spreading nowadays. In the process of concentrate leaching silver accumulates in the forms of jarosite compounds, transforms into passive chemical state and is mostly found in solid phase. Effective technology development for silver recovery from solid phase of concentrate autoclave leaching raises the necessity for comprehensive research of silver forms of occurrence and their properties in this product. The possible form of silver presence in solid phase of concentrate from autoclave leaching is argentojarosite. This article is about the study of physical and chemical properties and structure of synthetic argentojarosite - AgFe3(SO4)2(OH)6. A method of argentojarosite synthesis has been developed under conditions simulating the process of autoclave leaching of sulfide concentrate, and includes silver dissolution in the form of Ag2SO4, Fe3+ sulfate hydrolysis, AgFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 build-up. X-ray data of synthesized argentojarosite completely correspond to those of natural mineral. The structural formula of this complex compound has been studied and confirmed. The chemical properties of synthetic argentojarosite, its solubility in acids and alkalis have been investigated. Phase changes when heating argentojarosite with the build-up of iron oxide and silver sulfate stop at the temperature equal to 650 ºC. Based on the results received the technological solutions for solid phase of autoclave leaching of concentrate have been developed with silver recovery of 95-98%."

With the success of their existing casino operation on the Ohio River in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, the Indiana Gaming Co., LP planned a major expansion of the current facilities. This expansion includes a second 1400+/- car parking garage, a new surface parking lot, elevated walkways, and a new floating casino that will double their present square footage and consolidate all of the gaming activity to one floor. In March of 2006 Richard Goettle, Inc. was awarded the general contract to construct a 260? x 520? boat slip for the new Argosy VII floating casino. An Open Cell® bulkhead system was specified as the means for constructing the new slip. Our contract included the purchase and installation of 300,000 square feet of PS27.5 sheet pile, excavation of 230,000 cubic yards of soil, and a 3300 square foot Mechanically Stabilized Earth wall.

Considered problems: elaboration and implementation of resource-saving technologies, low-cost support systems improvement, openings security and support, based on wallrock condition control with supreme implication into the rock pressure occurrence counteraction work. Results of analytic and underground investigations using computer simulation of the finite elements in order to calculate stressstrain state of the multivariable geomechanical systems are presented. Solutions of concrete objectives are found using spatial geomechanical model of solid motion around openings, considering real geomechanical parameters formation of support forms with proper conditions of their contact and real mechanical characteristics. Ultimate solutions of resource-saving technologies implementation based on the analysis of multivariate vertical, horizontal, and reduced stresses components calculation and also near-contour rock, support bearing components and security constructions movements are found. Results of experimental investigations of combined supports and security constructions, which increase openings' stability in difficult conditions of flat coal seams are presented.

The Argyle diamond mine is located in the East Kimberley area of Western Australia, some 100 km south of the town of Kununurra. The diamondiferous Argyle olivine-lamproite diatreme was discovered in August 1979. Production began in December 1985 at a planned throughput of 3 Mtpa to recover 25 million carats of diamonds. Presently, Argyle is the world's largest producer of natural diamonds and produced over 40 million carats in 1993 from seven million tonnes of lamproite ore treated. Two phases of evaluation have been carried out. The first in 1981-82 was designed to prove around 60 million tonnes of ore to justify the establishment of a mine with a minimum life of 20 years. The second phase, in 1989-90 involved drilling the orebody to greater depths to provide data on which to plan the final pit design. The final pit contained 120 million tonnes of ore at 5.3 carats per tonne (ct/t) grade. Mining of the planned pit will extend the mine life to around the year 2004, following which it is possible that a further cut-back could be mined. There is also the potential for future underground mining. A substantial amount of geotechnical work has been undertaken due to the fact that the pit will be nearly 500 m deep and is located in a mobile zone causing abnormally high residual stresses to occur in the pit walls. The occurrence of low strength rocks at depth in the pit walls further complicated the situation. Hydrogeological investigations were done to determine pit dewatering requirements and to assess the effect of dewatering on pit wall stability.

Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Limited (ADM), manager and operator of the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture (ADMJV) will recruit approximately 400 employees during 1985 to operate the new large-scale, open-cut diamond mine and treatment plant being developed at Argyle, in the East Kimberley Region of Western Australia. These employees will live in Perth or environs and will commute to work at Argyle via chartered jet aircraft. On site, they will be accommodated in self-contained single person's quarters, with central messing and recreational facilities. Rostering systems have not been finalised, but it is likely employees will rotate through a cycle of 14 days at site and seven-days on leave in Perth. ADM spent three years evaluating residen- tial options before deciding to commute its workforce from Perth. Another 70 senior staff will reside in Kununurra (the nearest established town, 250 km from Argyle) and commute to the mine daily by air.

"Arizona aggregate (sand, gravel and crushed stone) producers enjoyed more than a half a century of nearly constant growth in demand for aggregates. Approximately 80 percent of the aggregate produced in Arizona is sand and gravel, and 20 percent is crushed stone (U.S. Geological Survey, 2015). Figure 1 shows the generalized distribution of potential sources of sand and gravel (yellow) and potential sources of crushed stone (other colors described below). Black dots show locations of aggregate operations.Sand and gravel commonly is produced from modern river channels and terraces although some alluvial fans and high-level paleo-river terraces also serve as aggregate resources. The gravel clasts are a mix of rock types that reflect the types of rock in the source area of the rivers. Generally processed river gravels meet stringent specifications for highend uses.Crushed stone, which makes up about 20 percent of production, primarily comes from a variety of metamorphic rocks and light-colored intrusive igneous rocks such as granite (brown areas), dark colored extrusive igneous rocks such as basalt and scoria (rust colored areas), and carbonate rocks such as limestone or dolostone (green areas). Carbonate rocks are also used in the manufacture of cement and lime.Construction and aggregate production in ArizonaBecause aggregate producers have limited facilities for storing product, stockpile changes are insignificant compared to production. Therefore, demand or consumption of aggregate in Arizona is considered to be equal to production. Production figures used in this paper reflect shipments, sales or marketable production, including aggregate used by producers to make readymix concrete and asphalt. Production figures were reported by the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1950 until 1995 and by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) since then. Production figures are reported voluntarily, and major operators are the primary source for these figures. Because many smaller operators do not report their production, the figures are conservative values that provide an approximation of aggregates production activity."

"It is not surprising that the most popular key takeaway from the Developing Diversity in Mining workshop (see box) held on the first day of the SME Arizona Conference in December was, “Have more parties!”The adage that mining professionals work hard and play hard was clearly demonstrated at the two-day conference in the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, AZ. Nearly 550 participants, some of whom had left behind frigid temperatures and thick parkas in their hometowns, attended a full slate of technical sessions, shared industry experiences and knowledge, reconnected with buddies in the industry, and made strategic new contacts in the conference’s collegial environment, aided by the mild Arizona winter.To start off the technical sessions, John Mansanti, president and chief executive officer of Crystal Peak Minerals and 2017 SME president, entertained a packed lecture room with his keynote lecture on “Tariffs, Embargos, and Cartels ... Oh My! A Perspective on Potash.” Mansanti gave the audience the benefit of his more than 35 years of experience at companies including Barrick Gold, Newmont Mining Corp., Placer Dome, Freeport-McMoRan and Intrepid Potash, where he was senior vice president for operations, technology and strategy. At the luncheon, Justin Cross, general manager of Freeport-Mc- MoRan’s Bagdad operations, spoke on how the role of a leader in mining is transforming from one based on technical expertise to one based on the ability to collaborate, to lead and to adapt to changes in technologies and skill sets, in his talk on “Knowing When to Learn, When to Lead and When to Manage.”"

The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

Arizona copper mines produced nearly 67% of the nation?s copper in 2000, according to a report released by the Arizona Mining Association (AMA). This was a slightly larger share than in 2000 despite large reductions by one major copper producer and production cutbacks at several other facilities. In 1999, Arizona mines produced 64% of the nation?s copper. The report was prepared by economist George F. Leaming of the Western Economic Analysis Center in Marana, AZ. It also showed the copper industry had a $4.6-billion impact on the Arizona economy in 2000, a 26%decline from 1999. This is the lowest financial impact since 1973 and less than half the record reached in 1981of $9.6 billion. The decline is primarily due to a sustained low copper price and a slow-down in the US economy. The mining industry?s impact included combined direct and indirect contributions of $1.283 billion in personal income for Arizona residents, the equivalent of 43,000jobs. More than 5,000 of those jobs were in state and local government and more than 18,000 were in trade and ser-vice businesses. The copper industry directly employed fewer than 8,000 people statewide in 2000. This was down about 23% from 1999.

Arizona is a sun-belt growth-region where 13 tons of industrial (nonmetallic) minerals is being produced annually per capita. In 19B5, non-fuel mineral production reached $1.532 billion and consisted of metallic ($1.277 billion-84%) and nonmetallic ($253.5 million-16%) earth materials. Sand-and-gravel value was second only to copper. over 90% of the value of nonmetallics is represented by combined sand, gravel, cement, and lime. The remaining less than 10% ($25 million) was attributed mainly to stone, specific volcanic products (cinder, perlite, pumice), gypsum, clays, salt, zeolite, and others. Current interest in industrial-mineral development in Arizona is high, especially in the geologically complex Basin and Range region.

In connection with this development, most interesting departures have been made in methods of mining, concentration and smelting. Principles of mining and metallurgy of the greatest interest will be covered by papers which will appear in the Bulletin and be presented at Technical Sessions, while ample opportunity 'will ,be- afforded for those who go to the meeting to see all the points of interest to them. In addition, members will be well rewarded by the marvelous natural features to be seen on the trip, including the petrified forests, the cliff dwellings on the Apache Trail and the Grand Canyon of Arizona. Considerable interest has recently been developed in sage-brush oil because of its possible utilization as a flotation agent in the mining industry. A list of some of its physical properties, together with the method used in its extraction, may prove of interest at this time. Something over a year ago, a study of the essential oils in desert plants was begun in the Chemical Laboratory of the University of Nevada. None of the oils so far studied possess properties of special interest to engineers, except the oil of sage, Artemisia tridentata, which has exceptional power as a flotation agent. This plant, known as common sage brush, also called black sage, is widely distributed over the semi-arid West, being found quite generally on most of the dry plains and mountains west of Missouri. The method of extracting the oil followed in these experiments is very simple. The leaves, twigs and small branches are placed in an airtight drum, having a capacity of about 27 cu. ft. Steam is admitted through a number of ,small openings at the bottom of the retort, and the pressure maintained at 20 to 25 lb. per sq. in. for 3 hr. The escape of the steam from the retort is regulated by allowing it to pass through a stop-cock into a condenser. The water in the receiver is drawn off from time to time and the oil, which is insoluble and floats upon the water, is thus collected. At the end of 2 hr. most of the oil has been driven out, though traces continue to come over for a much longer time. By raising the pressure, the time required could probably be shortened and the yield increased, but the lack of laboratory equipment has prevented the carrying out of this experiment. The stock wood, bark and branches contain no oil, the distribution of the oil being limited to the leaves and young shoots. There is a seasonal variation in the amount of oil contained. Samples collected on different dates gave the following amount of oil: May 1, 0.42 per cent.; May 27, 0.6 per cent.; June 30, 0.72 per cent.; Aug. 1, 0.9 per cent.; Sept. 10, 1.0 per cent. The increase appears fairly constant from early spring, when the leaves first appear, until light frosts occur in the autumn. The reagents now used in flotation consist of various acids or salts, which may be either electrolytes or non-electrolytes, dissolved in water and some substance or combination of substances which function as collecting or frothing agents. At times the only dissolved salts present are those naturally occurring in the water used. The general effect of the electrolyte is to greatly sharpen the separation between the gangue and the concentrate. Examples of this are: The use of sulphuric acid with zinc ores; and of sodium carbonate or calcium oxide (lime) with silver-gold ores. Crude pyroligneous acid is also sometimes used when avail able. Various oxidizing agents, such as permanganates, bichromates, etc., are added in the selective flotation of lead-zinc ores. Many other reagents for performing certain specific functions, either real or imaginary, have been proposed, and a number of them have been tried upon a working scale. The wild orgy of experimentation which is now going on in flotation exceeds even that which followed the introduction of the Washoe process for the treatment of Comstock ores, when, among other things, sage-brush tea and tobacco juice were reagents added to the pans. Out of all this will, of course, eventually come a more or less standard practice for the treatment of each class of ore. Omitting a discussion of the functions of frothing and collecting agents, the reagents used in flotation for this purpose may be classified under five general heads: (1) Essential oils; (2) fixed or fatty oils; (3) alcohols and their combinations with organic acids; (4) coal tar and its refined products; (5) petroleum and its refined products. A flotative agent of some kind is required in flotation as now practiced. A single reagent, as, for example, certain of the essential oils, may perform the dual function of frothing and collecting agent, or a mixture of substances may be required. In this country, the essential oils used have been wood products, and have been almost exclusively confined to the steam-distilled pine oils. At the present time, the supply of these is limited, and the cost almost prohibitive, so that their use has been dispensed with as far as possible. The flotation process for the concentration of ores is a method by means of which one or more of the minerals in the ore (usually the valuable ones) are picked up by means of a liquid film and floated at the surface of a mass of fluid pulp. Here they are separated from the other minerals, which remain immersed in the body of the pulp. In general, the minerals which are floated are sulphides of metallic luster, but some other minerals of metallic luster such as graphite and some sulphides with adamantine luster, such as sphalerite and cinnabar, are amenable to treatment by the process. The importance of flotation lies in the fact that it is primarily a "slimes process" by means of which the particles of valuable mineral, too fine for efficient gravity concentration, are saved with a high percentage of recovery. Recoveries in the mills treating low-grade copper sulphide ores have been advanced 10 to 20 per cent. by the installation of the process and similar increased savings have been accomplished by the same means in mills treating sulphide ores of zinc and lead. When finely ground ore containing sulphides mixed with a siliceous or earthy gangue is brought gently onto the surface of a body of water, in a direction forming an acute angle with the surface of the water, a considerable portion of the sulphide constituent of the ore floats on the surface of the liquid, while the gangue sinks. This is the so-called film flotation, exemplified by the Wood and Macquisten processes. When gas bubbles are introduced into a fluid pulp composed of finely ground ore and water, to which has been added (1) a small amount of certain oils, or (2) a small amount of certain acida or acid salts, or (3) a small amount of certain alkalis or alkaline salts, or (4) a small amount of a mixture of oil with acid or alkali, the sulphide particles in the ore are brought to the surface on the gas bubbles.
