Observed mineral assemblages in the Mt. Lyell copper deposit can be correlated with phase equilibrium investigations in the systems Cu-Fe-S and Fe-Zn-S. The trend of crystallization (or paragenetic sequence) of the ores is reflected in a progressive increase in the Cu: Fe and metal: sulphur ratios of the assemblages. This trend agrees with the regional zoning of the district. Tentative relationships between the paragenetic sequence, sulphur vapour pressure, and temperature are presented graphically. The absence of a suitable geological thermometer prevents precise elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization.INTRODUCTIONRecent phase equilibrium investigations of metal-sulphur systems at the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D.C. provide valuable information on the stability relations of a number of important sulphide minerals. This data, when applied to natural ore deposits, may be expected to clarify two special problems which confront the ore petrologist seeking to interpret observed data in terms of a particular physical and chemical environment of ore deposition. These two problems are the sequence of formation of sulphide minerals (commonly designated the paragenetic sequence) and an elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization. The object of this paper is to make such an interpretation of the copper mineralization of the Mt. THE so-called ?paraffin dirt" of the Gulf Coast oil fields has been con¬sidered an indication of the possible presence of oil and gas, and not a few wells have been brought in solely on the basis of such evidence. In a sense, it may be empirically justified as evidence of the presence of oil or gas, though it cannot be said to be infallible. If the writer is correctly informed, its association with oil and gas was pointed out by Lee Hager some years ago, and while it is commonly mentioned by geologists and operators in conversation, no discussion seems to have found its way into print. The present interpretation is based on laboratory study rather than on field investigation, and is put forth with the hope of stimulating discussion which shall lead to more complete understanding. The term "paraffin dirt" has been applied to soils with a peculiar texture, which has been described' as "curdy" or "rubbery." When moist, the material breaks much after the fashion of "green" cheese. It is rubbery under compression, but does not resemble rubber in tenacity or cohesion. When dry, the material ranges from hard clods to a horny mass of high tensile strength. The shrinkage in drying is very great, especially in the hornlike matter. The moist material ranges in color from dark brown in the specimens rich in organic matter to grayish in specimens containing more inorganic matter. All of the specimens studied were readily attacked by molds, which in some cases grew in great profusion on the samples. Samples exhibited a rather characteristic "swampy" or "mucky" odor when wet, and a characteristic odor of humic soils when moist.

A short discussion of the salient aspects of a dispersed flow model in relation to the gas flow in blast furnaces is given. The use of the theory in assessing vessel performance is mentioned. Tracer results of a blast furnace (688 m3) from three furnace levels and different radial positions are analysed and results presented as D/ud values. The significance of the shapes of experimental tracer curves are included and comparison is made with results obtained on other furnaces.

"Mg-Ni system draws attention due to the promising hydrogen storage properties of Mg2Ni. The proposed method involves the use of NiO and MgCl2 in an electrochemical cell to from Mg-Ni intermetallics directly. The electrodeoxidation of NiO was followed by combination of Mg and Ni in molten salt electrolytes. The products were characterized by XRD analysis and SEM examinations. The quantitative results from Rigaku supported by Rietveld Refinement method conducted by Maud showed that more than 50 percent of the input Ni was converted to Mg-Ni intermetallics.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that fossil fuels are the most common energy producing materials throughout the last century although, they are not renewable and their usage cause critical environmental problems [1, 2]. Hydrogen, on the other hand, is known as a clean, renewable energy carrier and instead of fossil fuels; usage of hydrogen for energy production will be the benefit of mankind. However, there are problems that hinder more common usage of hydrogen such as hydrogen storage [3]. Mg2Ni is known as Mg based hydrogen storage material with high hydrogen storage capacity [3-6]. Common Mg2Ni production methods are; mechanical alloying [8-11], vacuum induction melting [12, 13], vacuum arc melting [14], combustion synthesis [15], melt spinning [16], repetitive rolling [17] and isothermal evaporation casting [18] were also used. However, in all of these, pure Mg and Ni are required to be produced previously. Therefore, difficulties arise during handling, preparation and combination of Mg and Ni due to highly reactive nature of especially magnesium (i.e. oxidation of Mg) [11, 17, 19, 20]. Although hydrogen desorption dynamics can be significantly improved with usage of nanostructured Mg2Ni [7], it is difficult and it requires very long processing durations to produce nanostructured Mg2Ni by above processes."

From the previous administration, Mr. Fraser has inherited an atrocious economic mess: a staggering budget deficit, an unrealistically overvalued currency, a 14% annual rate of inflation, mounting unemployment, and a demoralized business community. He has already tackled some of these problems with some measure of success; but he has been in power for barely a year, and it's too soon to see a turn-around.

The long-awaited COSMAR study prepared under the auspices of the National Academy of Science reaches one emphatic conclusion that has been enthusiastically seconded by the mining industry: The 1977 federal surface mining act is "poorly suited" as a vehicle to regulate noncoal mining. Though the industry greeted the report with approval, the weight it will carry and the extent of its impact are yet to be felt. The COSMAR report makes no recommendations-that's a job left to the Administration's Council on Environmental Quality-and the prospect of legislation still hovers. For a closer look at the study, MINING ENGINEERING talked to COSMAR committee chairman James Boyd, a well-known presence in the mining arena for over 50 years. After highlighting some of the study's major points, Dr. Boyd comments on the report's impact and possible repercussions. Dr. Boyd, for those readers who haven't seen the COSMAR report, would you summarize some of its major findings? The committee analyzed the surface mining act to determine if it was applicable to noncoal mining and found that there were provisions of the act that either could not be met by existing technology or would be extremely difficult and not necessarily beneficial to adapt. We found that most noncoal mineral mines, despite their obvious diversity, can be considered in two major groups: 93% of all mines move 45% of all materials mined (mostly small units mining construction materials); and the few gigantic regional operations (2%)-copper, iron, phosphate, and uranium mines-that move 50% of the material. With few exceptions, neither of the two groups is amenable to the coal mining practices addressed by the act. The strip mine law was designed for coal mining, where land is regraded, revegetated, and returned to usefulness. In contrast, construction mineral quarries supply local needs for decades, remove most of the material from the immediate vicinity, and cannot be returned to their premining uses (though they have innumerable other valuable uses). The nation's huge mineral deposits require enormous capital investments, are vital to the nation's economy, and can take centuries to exploit. Any attempt to return these locations to premining use would be illogical. Pebble phosphate in Florida and red-bed copper in Oklahoma come near to meeting the conditions contemplated in the act. The description, characteristics, advantages and application of a new bulk explosive for medium to large diameter dry blasthole conditions is described. A brief outline of the delivery system for the product is also included. This explosive has been designed to provide an alternative to ANFO, currently the most common bulk dry hole product available to the mining and quarrying industry. The selection of the optimum explosive for any blasting operation is of prime importance. It is a major factor contributing to the production of the desired results in terms of muckpile fragmentation, shape and diggability. The optimum explosive can be defined as the most cost-effective in producing satisfactory breakage and displacement of the material. ANFO satisfies this prerequisite for a significant proportion of dry hole applications. This unique, low density and low velocity of detonation explosive has been developed to provide the industry with a cost competitive alternative to ANFO. Typical loading or average inhole densities nominally range between 0.40 g/cc to 0.70 g/cc, depending on the application. Characteristics of this explosive allow for specific and common applications in open cut coal and metalliferous operations. These include ore/waste control operations, prestripping and presplitting applications, sites confronting cap rock problems, and large hole diameter quarries.

A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves numerical modelling that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through a rock mass. A DFN is a 3D realisation of the ‘smaller scale’, non-deterministic defects; it is not an attempt to model larger, deterministic structures that should be identified as part of an engineering geology model. The approach utilises structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models that provides a tool for visualisation and analysis of a rock mass and indicates the potential large-scale slope or tunnel performance and stability.Stochastic fracture modelling for rock mass characterisation has significantly advanced over the past 25 years. With recent improvements to field data collection and computational power, it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses.This paper provides an introduction to the DFN approach, particularly the necessary input parameters and derivation of these from typical structural data sources, such as boreholes or scan line mapping. In recent times there has been an increase in the demand from Steel plants for a technology that offers the most economical environmentally sustainable solution. In terms of blast furnace off gas cleaning this has seen a drive towards Cyclone technology replacing the older Dustcatchers. Cyclone technology can achieve dust removal efficiencies as high as 95% increasing the dust yield at the primary stage of gas cleaning. The dry dust (rich in Fe and C) can then be recycled to the Sinter Plant or Blast Furnace. Capture of dust at this stage also has the benefit that sludge generation from the secondary stage is also reduced meaning less waste to landfill and / or recovery of some of the by-products for further use. Primetals Technologies already offer a state of the art Tri-Axial Cyclone installed on many sites world-wide, however, this paper focuses on a hybrid of this technology, the DustClone. The DustClone is a low CAPEX unit that is essentially a Cyclone housed inside the Dustcatcher. This unit is aimed at operators who may be carrying out smaller scaled shutdowns / repairs that normally have a reduced CAPEX. This paper describes the technology that Primetals Technologies have developed.

"Mine hoisting machinery, of which wire rope is an essential part, is developing, in Canada as well as in other parts of the North American continent, into highly sophisticated equipment. Heavier payloads are now required to be raised from steadily increasing depths at higher rates of speed and production. These hoisting conditions have, of necessity, brought about a major change in the production of steel roping wires and the wire ropes manufactured from them.Operators and designers of hoisting equipment are requesting a very much more efficient ratio of strength to weight in hoisting ropes, so that heavier loads may be raised from greater depths by ropes which will provide a predeterminable life span on which the operator may depend.The cost of wire rope to the operator is very low indeed, usually less than $0.01 per ton of payload, but the cost of unexpected shutdown periods, due to rope maintenance or change, can be extremely high -particularly in operations where a continuously high rate of production is an absolute necessity. Mine hoist ropes with a higher strength to weight ratio are now being made and used in some areas of Canadian mining, and a general understanding of the performance we may expect from them is required."

Low-density cellular concrete (LDCC) was first introduced to the market in the early 1900s and since then has made continuous technological advances. There are two primary types of LDCC: permeable and non-permeable. Both types of cellular concrete offer advantages in different types of geotechnical engineering applications. Because of its unique characteristics of low density, high compressive strength, and high fluidity during placement, LDCC offers an effective solution for a wide variety of engineering applications, and in many cases provides a more cost-effective, labor saving alternative to traditional fill materials. This paper will review the history, characteristics, and technological advances of LDCC, highlighting multiple real-world case studies that showcase the high-performance capabilities of both permeable and non-permeable LDCC.

SUMMARY THE results of an enquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration 'are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys.

The brown coal resources of the Latrobe Valley, which include over thirty thousand million tons of coal suitable for open cutting, provide the main source of fuel for the power generation for the State of Victoria. They also provide the basis for the development of a supply of cheap hard fuel for industrial and domestic use, and for the development of the Lurgi process for manufacture of town gas for most of the State. The production of hard char for metallurgical processes and liquid hydro carbons will each, no doubt, play its part in the industrial growth that will be based on these resources.The State Electricity Commission of Victoria, which has been allocated the task of developing these deposits since the early 1920's, is faced with problems of economic selection of deposits for development, and excavation and transport of huge tonnages of coal and overburden-in this year, 19'59, about 12,000',000 tons of brown coal will be won, and over 7,000,000' cu. yd. of overburden will be removed in the four open cuts operated by the Commission; by 1967, eight years from now, the demand will have doubled.This paper deals with the nature and importance of various factors effecting the planning of the development of these resources. It is in essence an introduction to the papers by C. S. Gloe, H. C. G. Rodgers and J. M. Alexander, also being -presented at the Institute conference in Victoria in August, 1959.INTRODUCTIONIt is the intention in this paper to define the factors that come under consideration in the planning and development of the brown coal fields in the Latrobe Valley, whose exploitation by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria was initiated almost 40 years ago. It is proposed to enumerate, and in sorile cases evaluate, the physical and economic criteria that play their part in determining planning for the future.

A microscope objective of given numerical aperture, whew used with light of given wave length, has some fixed limit of resolution. This may be expressed as potential resolving ability-the ability to resolve is inherent in the lens but whether this limit is achieved in practice is quite another matter. Nearly 50 years ago Abbe evolved theoretical considerations which indicated that the ability of a lens to resolve detail is directly proportional to twice the numerical aperture of the objective and inversely proportional to the wave length of the light used. It is true, unquestionably, that as the numerical aperture of the objective is increased the potential resolving ability of the lens is increased and likewise whew the wave length of the light used is decreased, the degree of resolution is increased. Whether Abbe's formula expresses the exact relationship is not a matter of great concern. It suffices to know that to improve resolution, other things being equal, two avenues of approach are available. Either the numerical aperture of the objective may be increased or the wave length of the light decreased. With the apochromatic system it is possible to employ successfully wave lengths from 400 to 500, µµ and still secure reasonably short exposures. The present limit for numerical aperture is 1.40 N. A. although objectives of 1.65 N. A. are wow an experimental possibility for metallurgical work. Thus certain well defined limits are set for those who work within the range of the visible spectrum. In order to take advantage of the increase in resolving power which accompanies a decrease in the wave length of light employed, Dr. A. Köhler and Dr. M. Vow Rohr of the Zeiss Scientific Staff developed the "monochromats." These are quartz objectives corrected for the single wave length 275 µµ which lies in the ultra-violet region of the spectrum. They also developed a series of quartz oculars and a complete photo-micrographic equipment with which to use the quartz optics. "Since their first production application in Sweden in 1995, water-powered, down-thehole hammers (WDTH) have been used throughout the world in many different drilling applications, total lines, over 25 million lineal meters of drill hole. This paper reviews the history and principles of down-the-hole drilling (DTH) in general with both air and water, before focusing on the details of WDTH hammers. A summary of the numerous and considerable advantages of WDTH drilling is provided, with particular emphasis on their superior productivity, smaller deviation, applicability in sensitive/urban conditions, environmental protection and much reduced energy requirements.HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON PRODUCTION DRILLING METHODSAir-flushed drilling with top hammers began in the mining industry in Sweden in 1873, while down-the-hole (DTH) drills, again with air flush (and activation) became operational in 1950. During that same time interval, Simon Ingersoll had patented the first steam-powered, top hammer rock drill to provide higher productivity in blast hole drilling. It is well known that water, as an activating, flushing and cooling medium, has many significant advantages over the use of air. However, it was not until 1973 that top hammer systems (either air or hydraulically activated) for larger rigs were adapted to the use of water flush, typically via “under the head” swivels.The concept of a water-powered, down-the-hammer (WDTH) had been explored prior to G. Drill acquiring the original patent from Atlas Copco in 1988. LKAB, a huge underground mining company owned by the Swedish Government and providing about 90% of the European Union’s iron ore, purchased G. Drill in 1991 and encouraged the commercial development of the WDTH. The first full-scale WDTH production works were carried out for LKAB in 1995, since when over 25 million lineal meters of drilling have been recorded in both underground and surface applications.In 2001, G-Drill was renamed Wassara, which today still holds the worldwide patents for WDTH technology. Regarding North American usage, the first significant application was by Advanced Construction Techniques (ACT) Ltd. during the test grouting program conducted for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at McCook Reservoir, Chicago, in 2002. Since then, WDTH has become the tool of choice for specialty drilling and grouting contractors on dams and other major structures throughout the U.S."

Computer-assisted data storage and retrieval in the geosciences is coming of age. A growing awareness of the need of the geological and mining community for effective access to existing data has triggered studies and development programs on many levels; governments, professional societies, industrial concerns, and the academic world are all active in this field. Developments in the past decade in computer hardware and software lend hope to the geoscientist searching for a means of expediting the flow of data. The new concern of the earth sciences coming together with the blossoming child of technology, computing, has led to serious study of the geoscience information problem. Active system development is under way in several areas. The papers presented at this Symposium effectively sample the spectrum of present day activity in machine-based geologic data storage and retrieval. These papers show the reader where the action is in this field today. Both long-range studies and plans and operational systems are discussed. Several studies and research efforts have been undertaken on a national or international scale. Robinson discusses the activity of the international geological community in these Proceedings. He speaks from a position of authority as Chairman of the International Union of Geological Sciences' Committee on Storage, Automatic Processing and Retrieval of Geological Data. A study of a "coordinated information program for geological scientists in the United States" documented by Smith, et al.1 proposes a "long-range information program ... responsive to the entire geosciences community . . . (to) draw on the best of large-scale information systems technology." The European geologic community is embarked on project Geosemantica 70, started at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Paris. Dixon discusses some results of this work in a following paper. The Canadian study of geological data storage and retrieval on a national scale is reported in a volume edited by Brisbin and Ediger.2 The Canadian report presents detailed recommendations for recording and coding geologic data for automatic process-

This section will outline procedural, statistical, and model applications developed for specific problem solving and for specific applications in beneficiation processes. Iron Ore Processing Introduction of taconite as a basic raw material in the iron ore industry took place with application of high order technical resources for process development and engineering. This investment of resources encouraged computer utilization to maximize efficient use of capital. From this recognition, process control computers have been installed for operations use in the major taconite plants of the iron range. One of these installations, the Minntac Division of U. S. Steel at Mountain Iron, Minnesota, is described in the paper by Chase in these proceedings. Other computer techniques used in taconite processing are outlined by Tuttle, Ahlquist and Carlson, representing Erie Mining. In this volume Tuttle, et al. describe statistical methods for development of information in taconite beneficiation. Statistical methods used in iron ore processing are described by Volin in treating flotation data as outlined in prior proceedings of the symposia and in other publications. 1,2,3 Industrial Minerals The use of linear programming for feed blending at the Carlsbad operation of International Minerals and Chemicals was outlined by Nunnekoven in 1963.4 Subsequent application of this procedure at the Kingston phosphate operation in Florida was described by Loper. Continued development led to installation of an on-line computer in the Kingston plant which reached operational status in 1967.6,7,8 Application of an on-line computer to industrial mineral production accomplished at Kingston is regarded as a milestone in computer use development. Following this achievement, the Cominco potash beneficiation plant near Saskastoon in Canada was automated by installation of an on- line computer programmed to carry out direct digital control functions to effectively operate the plant by process computer. "In a 1985 seminar, we were told that over-optimism abounds in Artificial Intelligence (AI), that AI is neither a science nor a technology yet, and that we will be both exhilarated and disappointed with AI. In fact, even today, there is no single accepted definition of AI; however, certain features have been identified by AI researchers as essential to consider an entity (e.g. machine or program) to be intelligent. According .to Shank (1987), these features include communication (to be able to communicate with), internal knowledge (knowledge about itself), world knowledge (awareness and knowledge about the world outside), intentionality (knowing what one wants and a plan to seek it, ie. goal seeking behavior), and creativity (being adaptable to changing conditions). None of these figures would individually define intelligence; however, each would be a part of intelligence in its own way.The prospects for the development of entities with AI have never been as good as they are now. The combination of advancements in computer hardware and .software along with new insights into the ways in· which we store knowledge and use it for problem solving has enhanced the potential for the creation ~f intelligent entities. After some unbounded optimism of a major breakthrough in the fifties and frustrating disappointments in the two following decades, it appears now that AI has emerged from research labs to industrial practice. This is confirmed by the growing number of repeat applications of AI in business and industry to the extent that AI can now be considered a technology.AI applications are categorized into several distinct areas such as Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition and Synthesis, Expert Systems, Robotics, Machine Vision, etc. Of these practical realizations, Expert Systems (ES) has the greatest potential for meeting the decision-making needs of the manager in the ever-growing complex scoio-technical systems. Prof. Feigenbaum, an expert and leader on expert systems, has defined Expert System as"" ... an intelligent computer program that uses knowledge and inference procedures to solve problems that are difficult enough to require significant human expertise for their solution. Knowledge necessary to perform at such a level, plus the inference procedures used, can be thought of as a model of the expertise of the best practitioners of the field."""

Mineral exploration activities are benefiting from new interpretive techniques which have become economically practical with computers. Government agencies, educational institutions, and industry have each contributed research and development efforts for improving the mathematical analysis and graphical display of exploration data, resulting in operational aids not foreseeable a decade ago. Progress has been worldwide and is expanding rapidly. Books 1-10 are supplementing the periodic literature, at least one abstracting service is now active, 11 and an association has recently been formed to encourage and publicize advances in this field. 12 With the diversity of applications, only partial coverage of the subject can be made at any single symposium. Four of the six papers in this section report on the current state-of-the-art in selected areas of interest: graphics, time-sharing, mathematics, and economic analysis. The remaining two papers are descriptions of advanced statistical techniques for gaining additional information during exploration, and illustrate methods which will become more commonly applied in the future. "Computer Graphics: A New Tool for Exploration and Mining" describes the use of a computer and accessory equipment as an information retrieval device, graphically merging and displaying pertinent information for visual inspection and interpretation. This is a rapid means of studying information which has been pre-stored in a form accessible to the computer. Time-sharing is a means of achieving a comparable rapid response when calculations are being performed. The paper, "Some Applications of Time-Sharing in Mining Geophysics," describes the experience of one company using a time-sharing facility for geophysical computations. Another paper on this subject, stressing mining applications, has recently been published. 13
