The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill?s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.

Agapito Associates (AAI) provides consulting services in geo-engineering, mining engineering and related disciplines. Founded in 1978, the firm operates out of offices in Grand Junction, CO, Golden, CO and Lombard, IL. Members of the staff include mining, civil and geological engineers, physicists, geologists, numerical analysts, computer specialists, instrumentation specialists, plus administration and technical support personnel. AAI has provided consulting and engineering services to mining companies producing base metals, precious metals, coal, potash, trona, limestone, oil shale and salt, and to defense and nuclear-waste disposal industries. AAI also provides services for measuring in situ horizontal stresses using an advanced biaxial overcore stress downhole measurement system developed by Sigra of Australia. Since 1978, AAI has measured in situ stress in copper, oil shale, molybdenum, trona, limestone and coal mines, and in tunnels and concrete structures. Since 1994, the staff has completed 527 overcore stress determinations. AAI has the equipment and personnel for overcoring, sample coring and instrumentation installation in limited access, surface and underground mines. Portable Longyear CP-65 drills, borehole deformation gauges and strain indicators are used for difficult-access overcoring and are permissible for use in gassy mines.

The Second Avenue Subway is a $16.8 billion project planned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City. It will reduce overcrowding and delays on the Lexington Avenue Line, improving travel for both city and suburban commuters, and improving access to mass transit for residents of the East Side of Manhattan. The project is a new, two-track, 13.5 km (8.5 mile) subway extending from Lexington Avenue at 125th Street in Harlem on the north end of Manhattan, to Water Street at Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan. The first phase of construction includes rock tunnels from 92nd Street to 62nd Street and connection to the existing 63rd Street station, three new stations, and track and systems from 105th Street to 63rd Street, allowing service between 96th Street and Brooklyn via an existing Broadway Line. The following describes the Project in detail, discusses the construction challenges addressed in the design, and the initial design/build contract to be awarded in 2005. A discussion of the planned mined construction of two rock caverns and a cut-and-cover station construction are also included.

The Bond grindability testing procedure has been standardized to measure the same grindability values, i.e. Bond work index (BWi), for the same ore when tests are performed in different laboratories or by different operators. This is accomplished by the standardization of mill dimensions, tumbling speed, grinding ball charge weight and distribution, sample ore charge weight in the mill and operating practice. The results of this investigation reveal that the Bond work index grindability values may differ substantially with different standard Bond ball mills. This paper will review the results.

Multidisciplinary investigations were completed to prove the availability of water resources for the proposed San Cristóbal silver-lead-zinc mine in the arid Altiplano of Bolivia. Surface water resources are scarce, of poor quality, and unsuitable for development. Therefore, hydrogeological reconnaissance targeted alluvial aquifers for development. Follow-up resistivity, refraction, and water quality assessments were used to prioritize areas with prolific production potential. Pumping tests and regional water balance analysis indicate an alluvial aquifer can sustain the required approximately 40 000 m3 per day production for the life of the mine and predict no significant negative environmental effects on local groundwater users and the environment.

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government commissioned the design and construction of the West Kowloon Drainage Improvement, Stage 2, Phase 2, Kai Tak Transfer Scheme (KTTS) project in 2000 to relieve potential flooding in Mong Kok caused by the insufficient capacity of the existing storm water drainage system. The KTTS involves construction of a 1.5km,4.4m drainage tunnel and a 450m long box culvert, running from Waterloo Road near Hereford Road to the existing Kai Tak Nullah in San Po Kong. This paper describes the design and construction of; the bored tunnel through both hard rock and soft ground using a slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), six associated access shafts, a connection structure at Waterloo Road and the box culvert connecting the bored tunnel to the outfall at Kai Tak nullah. Details will be provided on the contractor’s alternative designs adopted during the contract including the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete as one-pass temporary and permanent support for three of the shafts and modifications to the Engineer’s design for the box culvert structure.

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated long-wall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every 1.5 m [5 fl] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 MA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

This article should be of interest to SME members. It shows sustainable development type projects need not be massive or expensive. Smaller, utilitarian projects are equally valuable to developing communities as they seek to develop their own economic and social infrastructures. The behavior of gold in a conventional copper electrorefinery anode slimes treatment process is expounded on in this study. In the raw anode slimes generated in a copper electrorefinery, gold occurs mainly as tiny particles of metallic gold, which are commonly attached to selenide particles. Some gold is also present in selenide form. Decopperizing the anode slimes retains much of the metallic gold, but also promotes the incorporation of gold in the structure of silver-rich selenide species. A greater fraction of the gold is converted to (Ag,Au)2Se or Ag3AuSe2 when high-Se and high-Ag anode slimes are decopperized at elevated temperatures and pressures. After pelletization and roasting of the slimes, the gold is converted to a (Ag,Au)-alloy and Ag3AuSe2. Smelting of the roaster products eliminates the selenium and converts the gold to a silver-rich (Ag,Au,Pd)-alloy in the dore metal. In the subsequent silver electrorefining process, gold collects as a gold-rich (Au,Ag,Pd)-alloy in the gold mud. Dore smelting rejects many impurities as a silica slag; minor amounts of gold are present as a (Ag,Au,Pd)-alloy in the silica slag. This gold is recovered by flotation and is recycled to the dore furnace. Gold is identified in both the tellurium caustic leach residue and the parting plant wash water mud as tiny particles of metallic gold. These products are also recycled to the dore furnace to recover their gold values.

Parts I and II in this series of papers presented the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical development of a process to effectively recover copper using medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW). Key features of the process were the use of superfine grinding of the concentrate (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160ºC and 1,380 kPa (200 psi) oxygen overpressure, DEW to produce LME Grade A cathode, recycling of the lean electrolyte to the pressure leaching step and treatment of a lean electrolyte bleed by solution extraction (SX). Recycling of the lean electrolyte provided all of the acid required to effectively dissolve copper and convert approximately 65% to 70% of the sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur, resulting in an ?acid-autogenous? process referred to as the ?MT-DEW-SX? process. This paper (Part III) discusses the steps taken to develop and complete a large-scale demonstration of the process at Bagdad, Arizona, in 2005.

Although the occurrence of deposits of titanium minerals on Kenya’s present day beaches and adjacent dune systems has been well documented, the potential for older formations to host economically viable deposits had not been recognised until recently. The Magarini sands formation in Kenya has been found to contain deposits of ilmenite, rutile and zircon in quantities and grades that have the potential to be commercially exploited. Since 1995, Tiomin Resources Inc. has explored these deposits and has identified one deposit, the Kwale project, as being able to support the development of a mine producing some 300,000 tpa ilmenite, 75,000 tpa rutile and 37,000 tpa zircon. Tiomin plans to start production by late 2002. Construction of a US$137 million operation is set to commence in the first half of 2001.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry. Surface and underground limestone is one commodity recently surveyed. The sound levels of mining and processing equipment were recorded to identify noise sources. Full-shift worker noise exposures were completed to determine the exposure of various occupations. This paper presents the results of the noise research conducted in both underground and surface limestone mines, detailing the equipment likely to cause worker overexposures, and the occupations experiencing overexposures. Implications for worker noise exposure reduction are also reported.

The MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is a new production scheduling tool developed by Mintec, Inc. using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. This tool was developed to solve the short- and medium-term schedule problems for surface and underground mining operations that involve multiple mining areas, multiple processes, multiple destinations and blending requirements. MSSO finds the optimum schedule in each period that achieves the objective while satisfying comprehensive product quality and quantity requirements as well as physical and technical constraints. Using the MineSight Planning Database (MSPD) as a central data hub, MSSO seamlessly works with MineSight 3-D (MS3D) block models and third-party data, MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP), MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) and MineSight Activity Planner (MSAP) to prepare data, formulate MILP models, calculate, report, fine-tune, save and visualize schedules. This paper presents the features and capabilities of MSSO. A case study is also given to demonstrate the applications of this new tool.

In Australia during the 1990s, Zeni Drilling took on several demanding shaft boring contracts. This paper describes the safety, operational, technical and environmental advantages derived through the implementation of mechanized boring methods for two of these projects. The paper first describes a 3-meter (10 ft) diameter access shaft blind bored from an underground location to 440 meters (1,444 ft) deep for a gold mine in Tasmania. The construction of a 5.8-meter (19 ft) diameter, 515-meter (1,690 ft)deep ventilation shaft for a longwall coal mine in New South Wales is also described.

INTRODUCTION South Coast Water District (SCWD) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel(BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Monarch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,200-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch gravity Techite sewer pipeline critical to the SCWD Sanitary Sewer Collection System. The original tunnel and sewer pipeline were constructed in 1954 and the sewer line was replaced in 1974.Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel. Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline and a 731-foot section of tunnel located at Thousand Steps Beach was determined to be in immediate need of repairs. SCWD and consultants Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) and Tetra Tec prepared a Work Plan for emergency tunnel stabilization and pipe protection measures that was implemented in January 2007. Normal access to the beach and the section of tunnel requiring repairs was limited to public stairs referred to as Thousand Steps and, therefore, all materials and equipment needed for the work were transported to the beach by ocean-going landing craft. Additionally, the emergency repairs had to be completed without taking the pipeline out of service. Numerous environmental, logistical and operational requirements had to be overcome to complete the challenging emergency repairs. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Laguna Beach area is located in the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California. The project area is located on the southwest flank of Niguel Hill along marine wave-cut cliffs and slopes. The tunnel was excavated in the San Onofre Formation, a marine deposit, characterized by abrupt lateral and vertical changes in lithologies that vary from boulder to cobble and gravel size breccias to medium coarse sandstones with gravel, sandy claystone and siltstone. The interval of the tunnel that required repairs is located within the San Onofre breccia, a moderately-to-well cemented, poorly bedded to massive unit with angular to subangular boulder and cobble sized clasts of schist. The sandy silt matrix of the breccia is composed of quartz, feldspar and schist grains (Figure 2). GENERAL TUNNEL DESCRIPTION The approximately 6-feet high by 6-feet wide 10,200-foot-long BIST was hand mined in 1954 at the base of the coastal cliffs. Primary access is through twenty-one access adits from public and private beaches. The tunnel is located in an easement that extends beneath private property with residential structures situated 50 to 80 feet above and horizontally in close proximity to the tunnel alignment. The Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel and relief sewer project, located in the city of Allen Park, MI, is a long-term corrective action designed to bring Sanitary District One?s sanitary system into compliance with its 2005 consent order and service contract with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The $20 million project is intended to reduce Allen Park?s wet weather discharges to DWSD, reduce bypass pumping to the Ecorse Creek and limit the future risk of basement flooding by providing storage during wet weather events and eliminating hydraulic bottlenecks in the sanitary sewer system.

Success of the Gold Line Eastside Ex-tension rail tunnels in Los Angeles, CA has prompted the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s (Metro) planning new rail lines to include underground alternatives. The Westside Extension Transit Corridor alternatives include up to 27 km (17 miles) of subway to be constructed in soft ground. The routes will require construction in Los Angeles? ?potential methane zone,? which was not considered for subway construction until recently. Slurry face tunnel boring machines (TBM) will likely be specified.

Steel fiber reinforced concrete segmental rings are the final tunnel lining for approximately 85% of the alignment for a 6.706-meter (22-foot) internal diameter tunnel being built as part of the East Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project. This paper describes the approach adopted for the design of the steel fiber reinforced concrete segments, the development of the performance criteria for the segments, and the testing program used to confirm the performance of the materials and segments in the laboratory and in the field.

M-30, Madrid’s inner ring, covers 42 sq km of the city centre where one million people reside. It was constructed in several phases during the sixties and the eighties. The design criteria applied to those phases were different and were not always homogeneous with urban roads with lighting regulation as well as speedways. These areas had a heavy concentration of access and exits and there had been made many changes on the number of traffic lanes which has caused heavy traffic congestions and high accident rates. The environmental impact and noise pollution in residential areas are also consequences of M-30. The Madrid Major took a decision at the beginning of the present legislation, based on socio economic and environmental evaluation; rebuild the M-30 with the following sustainable mobility principles: Underground transfer of a considerable portion of the main ring and some of its links replacing some parts of the surface with new green areas in order to reduce the environmental impact. Increase the traffic capacity, improving the traffic continuity and fluidity and eliminating the lighting regulation areas, which is one of the main congestion problems currently. Increase the traffic safety with clear signalling information panels and avoiding difficult maneuvering. Redesign the links with the high capacity radial highways and other connecting lanes of the city. The project is worth 3.7 billion Euros. In 2007, when the construction is completed, it is expected will save 14 million of journey hours that represent 4.5 million Euros saved in fuel consumption per annum, There will be a very significant reduction of 35,000 tons of CO2 in terms of pollution and 400 less car accidents. Those values will increase even more in the following years. The areas beside Manzanares River, running parallel to the M-30 on the western side of Madrid, will be highly enhanced. Better water quality and the recovering of the green areas existing in old times will also return for the citizen’s enjoyment. TUNNEL CROSS SECTION OF CALLE 30 SOUTH BY PASS One of the major challenges of the new Calle 30 is actually not only the related to the main road but also to the link with the A-3, with highway to Valencia. This link is currently the most congested area and has one of the highest traffic densities of Spanish roads, with more than 250,000 vehicles/day. The remodelling of this area is the principle objective of the South by-pass. The tunnel is the only answer for this by-pass as the road alignment will go among buildings.
