Several thousand years ago, metallurgists discovered that by combining two relatively soft metals, copper and tin, they could make a new material, bronze, that was stronger than either metal separately. Bronze and other alloys show how different materials can be integrated to create something new and better. Today?s mining industry can likewise find benefit in an integrated approach to managing the external impacts it has through its waste materials and its use of water. Just as using bronze gave ancient nations an economic and military advantage, mining companies can gain competitive advantage through finding better ways to manage water and waste. Trends pushing this include: ? Environmental ? Regulations on water-taking and the quality of discharged water are becoming more stringent. Net zero discharge requirements are often imposed by regulators. Mining companies also come under pressure to manage environmental impacts of mine waste, including minimizing the area occupied by waste and seepage amount resulting from infiltration of water from a smaller surface area. ? Social ? Particularly in arid parts of the world, there are multiple possible uses for each gallon of water. Local residents do not want to see a reduction in supplies of water for agricultural, domestic, manufacturing and other purposes. They get suspicious about any potential impact of water being mixed with their water reservoirs if it comes from a mining site, even if it would be treated. Such suspicions may cause conflicts among the stake-holders and delays in project approval processes.

The Owner Procurement Process or OPP is a proven, viable alternative contract delivery method that is potentially applicable to many tunnel projects. Using the OPP, the owner specifies and procures major tunnel construction items such as tunnel boring machines and tunnel linings and provides them to a tunnel excavation contractor in order to manage risk and accelerate project schedule. However, due to industry perceptions regarding potential owner risk, it is seldom considered or is rejected out of hand. In fact, past performance demonstrates that the process significantly minimizes owner, contractor and over-all project risk and mitigates the impact of any claims and differing site conditions. The paper outlines how the process should be structured to achieve schedule, cost, quality and risk management benefits. Potential and perceived disadvantages are discussed and how the process can be structured to mitigate or avoid them. The planned implementation of this process on the tunnels for the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California is discussed.

In the last few years major industrial companies have begun to realize the importance of Reliability as an enterprise strategy that, properly implemented, will improve financial performance. Typical results of an effective Enterprise Reliability Strategy include a 20% -50% reduction in maintenance cost accompanied by a 5% - 10%increase in real production capacity, with no capital investment in production equipment. One factor fueling the race to acquire and implement enterprise reliability is the pressure for companies to be increasingly cost-effective and competitive in global markets. In a recent study, Asset Productivity: The Next Wave, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)stated that, “In order to compete for funds, companies must offer investor returns that are competitive with other opportunities. Alternative investments such as dot-com and others with non-traditional business models have raised the bar.” (APDF version of the study can be downloaded at www.bcg.com). BCG views asset productivity as the most powerful mechanism for increasing shareholder return. The author believes that the most effective way to increase Fixed Asset Productivity is to maximize asset utilization by increasing the Reliability of the Assets and the associated processes. Developing and implementing an ERS requires significant effort and knowledge. Most companies have difficulty finding a sufficient supply of these valuable commodities to implement an ERS Program internally. Many companies also struggle with figuring out how to get started and what direction to proceed.

This paper investigates the effects of solids concentration and the addition of Dispersant S40 on the flowability of original and ground limestone slurries. A rotational viscometer with a concentric cylinder geometry and a controlled-stress rheometer with a cone-and-plate geometry were used to characterize the rheological behaviors of limestone slurries. The rheological behavior of original limestone slurries (<100 µm) is transformed through different types of flows with increasing solids concentration. The use of Dispersant S40 can improve the slurry flowability by decreasing viscosity and eliminating Casson yield stress. It is therefore used as a grinding aid for the wet ultrafine grinding of limestone. The rheological behaviors of ground limestone slurries vary with grinding from a starting dilatant flow-ability to a resulting pseudoplastic one with an evident Casson yield stress in combination with a thixotropic character. The appearance of pseudoplastic flowability combining thixotropy is related to the fineness of a ground product and its specific surface area, which are both correlated to solids concentration and the additive amount of Dispersant S40. In addition, the accurate rheological characterization of time-dependent fluids is dependent on the instruments used and operation conditions.

The Canadian mining industry is one of the strongest in the world. Not only does the country produce a sizable amount of minerals and metals, Canada plays host to hundreds of global mining companies, large and small. The country, for the most part, recognizes the importance of natural resource development, particularly mining, to its economic well being. Like any country, though, there are federal and provincial regulations on the books that the industry takes issue with. But there are also certain economic incentive programs in place to encourage exploration and mine investment. And, unlike the industry and the United States government, the Canadian government and mining industry appear to have a reasonable working relationship.

Those involved in the mining and minerals industry really are an optimistic bunch. Faced with an economic downturn that has spread across the globe ? one, some say, that crept up on everyone ? mining professionals remain hopeful that the industry will return. An example of that optimism is the attendance at two of the industry?s key conferences and exhibitions. In February, more than 4,200 people attended the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Denver, CO. And a week later, in Toronto, Ontario, more than 18,000 were on hand for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada?s (PDAC) meeting. Both are respectable numbers and run contrary to meeting attendance figures during previous downturns when attendance and the numbers of exhibitors fell off significantly. Like other downturns, this most recent one has resulted in massive layoffs, curtailments of production and outright closures. Exploration has been hard hit and many junior mining and exploration companies will either disappear or be swallowed up by others. Gold is its usual self The PDAC generally attracts the gold mining and exploration sectors. So that might explain some of the optimism at the meeting. Unlike base metals and construction materials, gold, not surprisingly, is doing well. And most of the companies in the Investors Exchange at PDAC were involved with gold. While the balance sheets for most base metals companies look bad, gold companies appear to be not as hard hit. Gold is doing what it usually does during a downturn ? act as a safe haven while the value of other assets collapse worldwide. Governments around the world are preparing to pour trillions of dollars in an attempt to resuscitate their economies. This will likely lead to inflation, some experts at the PDAC convention said, which will be good for gold. And gold mining companies are also benefiting from lower production costs. The result is that some gold watchers believe gold could reach $64/g ($2,000/oz) at some point.

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

In currently used mining methods, blasting techniques often causes dilution of valuable ore and results in costly processing requirements. In the context of narrow vein mining of thin and highly concentrated orebodies there is a need of a mining method that can reduce dilution in order to remain economically viable. This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology, thermal fragmentation, in narrow vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation, as well as for an existing method used for narrow vein mining; comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs, as well as increased productivity and ore recovery, meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation. These results identify that there is an opportunity to introduce the thermal fragmentation technology to narrow vein mines within Australia, in order to lower costs and increase profit.

Historically, the processing function has been regarded as efficiently managed as long as production costs were kept low, recovery was adequate and sufficient plant capacity was avail-able. In this paradigm, processing is viewed as capable of making only a limited contribution to a company?s competitive advantage. However, the processing function can provide a primary vehicle for building critical competitive capabilities. Processing organizations should be encouraged to become so accomplished they generate new opportunities for other functional groups and thereby influence a company?s overall strategy. This requires a deep shift in processing?s role, in its self-image and in the expectations of it held by managers in other functions. Specific plant improvement techniques ? total productive maintenance (TPM), loss control, etc. ? should be viewed primarily as means for building strategically valuable processing capabilities. Different improvement strategies create different kinds of capabilities and present new strategic options. Broadly speaking, a mineral-producing company seeks competitive advantage through two principal activities: the development of new mineral production and reserves and the optimization of existing operations. These lead to increases in ore reserves, production levels and cash flows that are manifested in increased profitability and, hopefully, increases in the price of the firm?s stock. The profitability of a minerals company is a function of the overall profitability of the industry sector in which the company participates and the firm?s competitive position within that sector relative to those of its competitors. Competitive advantage within the industry comes from two sources: the ability to maintain lower prices than competitors for the same product (cost leadership), or from the sale of products with unique properties that justify higher prices (product differentiation; Porter, 1980). Most mineral companies produce fungible commodities that are sold to anonymous customers, and sustainable cost advantage is the only long-run strategy available to these companies to enhance profitability.

A common problem during the operation of the Kaldo furnace is the formation of accretions and blockage of the injection lance due to splashing. This typically occurs during the processing of anodic slimes for the production of doré. In this work, a 1:7 scale model of the Kaldo furnace currently in operation at Metalúrgica de Cobre, Mexico, was built in transparent acrylic plastic. Water and colored oil were used to represent the doré and slag, respectively. The model was used to determine the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance under a variety of experimental conditions at room temperature. Input variables included two types of oil, rotation speed, inclination angle, and the fraction of the vessel volume occupied by the liquids (φ). A mathematical correlation for the dimensionless maximum penetration distance of the injection lance d ∗ as a function of φ, the Froude number of the liquids in the vessel (Fr), the Reynolds number of the gas jet (Re), and the oil-to-water kinematic viscosity ratio (η)was developed. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental values was obtained. Digital images showed that splashing was caused by the turbulent gas jet impinging upon the free surface of the liquids, whereas the cascade effect was negligible. The results of this work have been useful to improve the operation of an industrial Kaldo reactor.

Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of the ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill grinding circuit has vast applications in the mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy, and research laboratories; however, this system has some challenges. The grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which the high interaction between loops, the variation of the system parameters with time, and time delay are some of the problems that pose a challenge. Since the controller parameters are determined offline in classic PID control, these gains are unchangeable and cannot overcome the mentioned challenges in this system. Hence, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller, which is a combination of fuzzy logic and a conventional PID controller, is proposed to control the grinding system, especially in the presence of model mismatch and disturbances. In addition, in order to solve the system challenges, a multivariable control approach based on an improved disturbance observer is proposed to suppress the effects of the disturbances. The most important feature of the algorithm proposed in this paper as the combination of fuzzy logic self-tuning PID and improved disturbance observer is its ability to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances, and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit. Simulation results in the cases of the set-point change in particle size and circulating load in the presence of model mismatch and external disturbances confirmed the controller performance compared to other controllers.

Tailings disposal is a significant consideration for the mining industry, with the majority of the ore processed in most mining operations ending up as tailings. Several tailings dam failure accidents have occurred during the past few years and mine tailings dam failures are occurring at relatively high rates. Tailings dam failure is disastrous with the serious damage and the loss of lives. To increase the tailings dam safety, a tailings dam monitoring and pre-alarm system (TDMPAS) based on the internet of things and cloud computing platform has been accomplished with the abilities of real-time monitoring of the saturated line, impounded water level, rain fall and the dam deformations etc. The TDMPAS has been applied in several mines in China and helped the mine engineers monitor the tailings dam safety and get warning information automatically and remotely in any kind of weather conditions. This work has been demonstrated the tailings dam monitoring and pre-alarm system (TDMPAS) is meaningful to monitor the tailings dam physical safety condition. The TDMPAS could be applied to monitor all the national tailings dams online in the future.

The Biwabik Iron Formation is a ~1.9 billion year-old sequence of iron-rich sedimentary rocks that was metamorphosed at its eastern- most extent by ~1.1 billion year-old intrusions of the Duluth Complex. The metamorphic recrystallization of iron-formation locally produced iron-rich amphiboles and other fibrous iron-silicate minerals. The presence of these minerals in iron-formation along the eastern part of what is known as the Mesabi Iron Range, and their potential liberation by iron mining has raised environmental health concerns. We describe here the geologic setting and mineralogic composition of the Biwabik Iron Formation in and adjacent to the contact metamorphic aureole of the Duluth Complex. The effects of metamorphism are most pronounced within a few kilometers of the contact, and decrease progressively away from it. The contact aureole has been divided into four metamorphic zones?each characterized by the composition and crystal structure of the metamorphic minerals it contains. The recrystallization of iron-formation to iron-rich amphibole minerals (grunerite and cummingtonite) and iron-pyroxene minerals (hedenbergite and ferrohypersthene) is best developed in zones that are most proximal to the Duluth Complex contact. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Bochum’s Underground Lot 306 was characterised by a confined site and unique tunnelling methods. A highly mechanized construction concept was developed to achieve high progress rates. Bespoke backup systems for muck disposal and material supply were used. For the first time in suburban tunnelling, wet shotcrete, batched onsite, was applied. A three-storey underground car park had to be undermined with only1.5 m of overburden and had to be lifted several times by “compensation grout in.” An existing operational two-lane metro tunnel was enlarged without any major impact on train operation.

"Located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, the Peñasquito operation is comprised of the Peñasco and Chile Colorado (Brecha Azul) deposits. Openpit mining (prestripping) began in 2010 and full production commenced during 2011. The openpit mines feed both a sulfide concentrator (mill) and a heap leach pad. The project is owned by Goldcorp Inc. Peñasquito is a poly metallic deposit with Au, Ag, Zn and Pb being recovered as payable metals.As a consequence of lower grade ores expected with advancing mine life, Peñasquito is facing a declining metal production profile. To maximize returns and asset value, plant modifications, including the addition of a carbon prefloat circuit and a pyrite leach circuit to improve recovery, are currently being undertaken. This carbon prefloat circuit will enable the recovery of precious and base metals from carbonaceous sediments. This material is currently being stockpiled. With the associated increase in complexity in the process circuit, the requirement of the ore control system to accurately predict ore feed characteristics is critical to maximizing metal recovery at the Peñasquito operation. The addition of the carbon prefloat circuit was also a key driver in allowing the Chile Colorado openpit to be developed.These conditions alongside Goldcorp’s drive to increase profitability and maximize net asset value has created challenges. These challenges are numerous and multifaceted. However, the ability to accurately route materials from the ore control system is critical to site success, and some of these challenges have been overcome by the adoption and implementation of a new ore control (OC) technology. Examples of these technological innovations in the ore control program are discussed in this article and include improvements in geomodeling, material routing and reconciliation. Successful implementation of these elements has led to significant improvements in selectivity, performance and data management, while reducing the variance between planning and execution, thus helping to drive overall improvement across the operation."
