In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the role that individual factors play in health and safety (H&S) outcomes in the mining industry. Two surveys, one measuring self-reported routine safety performance and one measuring individual perceived competence in the non-routine knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) critical to emergency response, were administered to two samples of mineworkers in separate research studies over a 2-year period (N=2,020 and 696, respectively). Eight demographic items were common to both surveys and their associations with each performance outcome were tested in response to a series of exploratory research questions.

Recent major floods have inundated Historic Ellicott City, Maryland, resulting in loss of life and property damage. Howard County, Maryland, has developed the Ellicott City Safe and Sound Plan to mitigate the risk of flash flooding in the Historic District, including a proposed stormwater conveyance tunnel. Challenges to overcome include thick zones of saprolite along the alignment, multiple near-surface structures, and minimal rock cover under an active railroad, while minimizing impacts to the public and historic structures. The project will also pursue recognition through the ISI Envision verification process.

INTRODUCTION The goal of any development drilling program is the drilling of the exact number of holes necessary to adequately determine grade and dimensions of an orebody, no more and no less. This cost of development drilling represents a large part of the total development budget. Any technique which eliminates unnecessary drilling costs produces beneficial results, both to the company and to the person who can claim the savings. This high development cost factor has produced a quantity of research to develop techniques, for efficient control of drilling programs. Recent mining literature is full of articles describing methods for measuring and increasing the effectiveness of these expensive projects. The method described in this paper was developed during the latter part of a major development drilling project at the Christmas Mine of Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company in Gila County, Arizona. It was used to test the need for drilling individual holes but could be expanded to control an entire project. This technique was used at Christmas as a practical means for evaluating adequacy of drilling on an individual hole basis, and it was possible to eliminate several previously approved holes. Application of this method involves an evaluation of geological conditions present and a good bit of common sense. Projects involving large disseminated, rather homogeneous orebodies of the porphyry-copper type would be the most likely candidate for application of the technique. Discontinuous orebodies would not be amenable to this technique. The method is based on the measurement of the linear correlation between the spatial distribution of two sets of data. The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient is used. This is a standard statistic commonly used to measure linear correlation between two sets of data. The statistical significance of the correlation coefficient at a 95% confidence level is the main criterion for controlling the project. For purposes of reference we will call our technique the "correlation method" in this paper.

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." The mining of coal in Alaska receives special treatment in the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 1977 (PL95-87). Section 708 of the Act required that the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) perform a study of "Surface Coal Mining Conditions in the State of Alaska, In Order to Determine Which, If Any, of the Provisions of the Act Should be Modified with respect to Surface Coal Mining Operations in Alaska'. The special committee on Alaskan Coal Mining and Reclamation of NAS completed their study in 1980 and prepared their report (NAS, 1980). At this time, the Secretary of the Interior and the Congress have taken no special action with regard to either special regulations geared specifically to Alaska or to submitting special draft legislation to the Congress requesting amendment of PL95-87. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has drafted legislation which was submitted to and passed by the 1982 session of the State Legislature. The State regulatory agency has also drafted the requisite regulations necessitated by the amendments to the State's Basic Coal Mining Act. It is expected that by mid 1983 DNR will have applied for "primacy" to the office of Surface Mining, U.S. Department of the Interior (OSM). They will be submitting the amended State Law, the revised State Regulations and an operational plan as called for by OSM regulations. The presumption is that primacy will be granted to the State of Alaska under PL95-87. The Usibelli Coal Mine continues to be the only operational commercial mine for coal in the State of Alaska. It produced 7.26 x 10 kg (8 x 10 " T) of coal during 1981. The current mine was started in 1920 by Captain Lathrop, an early developer and pioneer in Alaska. It was continued by Emil Usibelli and was taken over after the death of E. Usibelli (in the 1964 earthquake) by his son Joseph Usibelli who is the current President of, the firm3 Their latest improvement is a 27.5 m (36 yd. )Bucyrus-Erie Dragline which handles most of the overburden removal. The coal is removed by a loader-truck combination. They are currently starting up the use of a unit train loading facility which handles forty cars every two hours. This loading system was a development necessitated by the Sun Eel Export contract. The Alaskan Railroad was a major cooperator in the development of the first unit train loading facility in Alaska.

In recent years, the biosolubilization of rock phosphates by phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms has become a major topic of research studies. However, the microorganisms used in previous studies were mostly single and known species, and studies seldom focused on mixed communities of microorganisms or microbial consortia from natural environments. In this study, a microbial consortium from rhizospheric soil was used to solubilize two different compositions of medium- to low-grade rock phosphates — designated as ore samples 1 and 2 — in a laboratory-scale bioreactor. The microbial consortium showed good growth in the bioreactor, reduced the suspension pH and released soluble phosphates from the ores. Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed the action of the microbial consortium on the ore surface. There was considerable corrosion on the ore surface, and 3.42 and 4.93 percent of the element phosphorus was removed from ore samples 1 and 2, respectively. Microorganisms were sampled from the bioreactor for the analysis of their community structures by Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing. The analysis show that the suspensions added with different ore samples had different microbial diversities and richness. This study provides new insight into the biosolubilization of rock phosphates by a microbial consortium directly taken from rhizospheric soils.

INTRODUCTION The heavy risk inherent in all underground construction projects contributes significantly to the high cost of transportation tunnels. First, the knowledge of this risk leads the engineer to design conservatively. Second, the cost overruns are still common with a high proportion of them originating from corrective measures needed when unforeseen problems develop during excavation. These unforeseen problems includes - encountering unexpected objects, materials and water conditions - experiencing an unforeseen behavior of the materials - damaging property beyond the expected range of influence of the tunnel construction. To minimize these expenses, more emphasis is being placed on well planned and interpreted site investigation programs in the final design and planning stages of the project. It is well known that the cost of a planned excavation is less than the cost of dealing with the same conditions when they are encountered unexpectedly. Therefore, the objective of site investigation is to provide a complete set of reliable data for designers and contractors that is continuous along the projected tunnel alignment. Two alternatives axe available to achieve this objective; - for shallow tunnels, it is often feasible to generate continuous data by drilling appropriately spaced, vertical bore holes and applying sensing techniques for interpolation (1, 8). - for deep tunnels, or certain urban tunnels under existing structures, closely spaced, vertical bore holes are not feasible except for narrow zones at the portals. In such cases direct horizontal penetration may be required that may be complemented by radial sensing to extend the range of information.

Poirier was an underground copper and zinc mine located in Northern Quebec that operated between 1965 and 1975. There are 5 million tonnes of acid-generating tailings, which have contributed acidity and metals to the Kananewesig and Kistabiche Creeks. The final closure plan incorporates the placement of all reactive material into the tails basin, installation of a geomembrane liner over the tailings deposit and a one metre soil layer to protect the liner. The environmental effect of the residual seepage was assessed from an ecological risk perspective. The Reclamation Plan has been accepted, and work commenced in 1998 to restore the site.

Kaolin-based pigments are the most widely used pigments in the paper industry. Several types are available and include standard hydrous, delaminated, calcined, chemically-structured, and most recently, composite pigments. Within each category, a spectrum of products is available to satisfy the application requirements of paper producers. The paper industry has a broad range of applications including fillers in woodfree and groundwood-containing papers, pigmented size press applications, ultra-lightweight and lightweight coated papers, coated merchant papers, cast coated papers and coated paperboard. Each application has its own set of performance criteria and suppliers must work with mills to identify appropriate product(s) to fulfill these requirements.

Maintaining satisfactory air quality in electrowinning tankhouses is problematic and costly, particularly as plant operating current densities have increased. Conventional approaches have not proved completely effective. These include the use of beads, hollow spheres, surfactants and coalescer devices. They require powerful ventilation systems to be installed. As workplace and environmental regulations become more stringent, containment of the acid mist at its source is more attractive. An electrode cap system based on this approach has been developed and tested in two commercial copper electrowinning tankhouses.

This marks the 15th consecutive year for this column. During 1995, readers were asked to supply royalty data for construction raw materials especially for states where none is available. The response was discouraging and royalty data are still missing for several states for either sand and gravel or crushed stone. Several readers have said that this article has merit but more new information is needed to justify its continuation. Several articles and pieces of news relative to mineral royalties appeared in the trade journals. R. Lee Aston (E&MJ, November, 1995, p. 16N) described South Australian royalties as amended by the government in1994. The royalty rate (a percentage) was lowered but the assessed value for minerals was raised and the current rate amounts to 20 cents//t (18 cents/st).

Mining has been the mainstay of the Woods Creek Valley for more than a century. The head of the valley is at the Continental Divide, about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. First, it was the quest for gold and silver that drew people to the valley. Then, when molybdenum was classified as a strategic metal by the U. S. Government during World War I, it was the valley's molybdenum mineralization which attracted the most attention. Molybdenum is used primarily as an alloying material in superior grades of steel. Circumstances responsible for providing the label "Urad" are unknown, but Urad is variously reported to be an acronym for "Uranium Research and Development" or "Uranium Research of America Division". The search for uranium was fruitless as no ore grade uranium exists in this area. The moly orebody was first developed and mined by the Primos Exploration Company from 1914 to 1919. During World War II, the mine was purchased by the government and turned over to the Molybdenum Corporation of America to operate. In 1963 AMAX Inc. purchased the property for $2 million. After spending nearly $30 million for exploration and development, AMAX put the mine into production again in 1967.

Sunshine Mining Co.'s Kellogg operation is the primary silver producer in the US. Maintaining a comfortable working environment in this deep underground mine historically has been a complex and costly problem. To improve the ventilation and cooling systems at a time of declining and un-certain silver markets, it was proposed to optimize the performance of existing facilities at minimum cost. This paper discusses a two-year, $400,000 optimization program that resulted in increased total mine airflow, cooler ambient temperatures, reduced compressed air usage, and lower energy consumption by primary fans, air compressors, and refrigeration plants. This saved the company about $650,000 per year.

The USBH Mining Systems and Ground Control Generic Research Center funded a project leading to the improved planning of airflow and refrigeration in underground mines experiencing hot working conditions. The project was broken down into approximately five phases: 1. Visiting some of the known hot mines in the U.S. and sending out a questionnaire to determine other mines which might be experiencing hot working conditions in the future. 2. Choosing two mines in which to conduct measurements to determine the insitu rock thermal conductivity and diffusivity, and comparing these values with laboratory determined values. 3. Investigating computer programs available for mine climate simulation, and testing these programs with case study examples from the two mines where the rock thermal properties were measured. 4. Considering improved ways of estimating the wetness factor and experimenting with the use of heat flux meters to more directly measure the rock heat inflow into the airstream. 5. Applying the results of these investigations to simulating the climate for future mine development and production areas at the two- mines. The project is approximately two thirds completed. At the time of writing, the insitu measurements at one of the mines are still being recorded. This paper will be describing the procedures and results of the insitu rock thermal property measurements, and give a brief description of some of the simulated results obtained for a mechanised cut and fill stope case study from the Homestake Gold Hine in South Dakota.

Elevation of surface charge density on colloidal particles in the presence of a high potential electrostatic field is demonstrated as a viable technique for preventing the accumulation of solids in solvent extraction circuits. The effect of the technique is manifest by relative turbidity measurements between pregnant leach solution and raffinate, by changes in the character of the sludge accumulations, by alteration of the zeta potential of particulates, and by a general reduction in the mass of solids.

Subsidence planning and control must be an integral part of mine design in order to minimize the economic impact of underground mining on the surface. Pre-calculation of surface deformations which may cause damage to surface structures must be performed and dam-age criteria must be established, if the response of structures to such movements is to be determined and the extent of damages to be assessed. In this paper the Surface Deformation Prediction System (S.D.P.S.), which can be used to predict accurately the vertical and horizontal parameters of surface movements due to underground mining, is discussed. The Subsidence Response Modeling Program (S.R.M.P.). which can be applied to evaluate the response of buildings to subsidence-induced movements, is also reviewed. Finally, an example is presented demonstrating the applicability of these techniques for subsidence design and control.

In order to establish meaningful remediation goals and monitoring programs in areas disturbed by mining, it is desirable to determine the natural metals concentrations that existed in the area prior to mining. At Iron Mountain, California, several natural sources exist for acid drainage and loading of metals to Slickrock and Boulder Creeks. This paper describes methods to determine the contribution of copper and zinc to groundwater and surface water from those sources, including natural gossan rock outcrops, mineralized bedrock, and colluvial materials. Methods used include evaluation of: 1) historical information, 2) literature values of unmined, mineralized areas, 3) analyses of water from monitoring wells, 4) leaching studies, 5) statistical analysis, 6) isotopic studies, and 7) identification of background by elimination of mining sources. Results from this natural background determination show that Boulder Creek and Slickrock Creek carried elevated concentrations and loads of copper and zinc prior to mining activities. With repeated rinsing of reclaimed and remediated mine materials by rainfall, there will be a diminishing contribution from residual waste rock and tailings at Iron Mountain, and natural background will become an increasingly larger proportion of the total load.

"The objective of this research is to study the quality of blast-furnace iron ore pellets with binary basicity 1 fired on a pilot scale using the two main firing processes that are presently in use in the world and comparing them. Currently, the great majority of pellet producers use the traveling grate process because of its higher production capacity. In this study, the physical and chemical qualities of the pellet feed, limestone, anthracite and bentonite were determined and the amount of additives for a blast furnace pellet with the defined basicity was calculated. The physical properties of the green and dried pellets were determined accordingly. Produced pellets, after being fired on a pilot scale using traveling grate and grate kiln, were subjected to chemical analysis and physical testing. No significant difference was observed in the metallurgical quality — that is, reducibility index (RI), reducing disintegration index (RDI) and swelling index (SWI) — of the pellets produced by both processes. However, a comparison of cold physical tests — tumble and cold compression strength — shows improved quality of the pellets fired using the grate kiln process.IntroductionThe development of human civilization owes much to iron and steel (Sun et al., 2015). Iron is the most used metal in the world, and it is the main component of steel, which is present in materials for structural engineering, automotive and general industrial applications (Liu et al., 2014). Increased global demand has led to a decrease in the resources of ore with high iron content (Zhang et al., 2015), and currently 95 percent of the iron ore in China needs processing before smelting as its iron (Fe) content is only about 30 percent on average (Liu et al., 2014).Pelletizing is a process to economically agglomerate iron ore pellet feed into pellet form. After balling, green pellets are conveyed to the final step of the manufacturing process (Pena, 1982). The process is a multifaceted one, involving high temperatures, air flow gas turbulence and complex equipment geometry (Larsson et al., 2009). The pellets are fed into blast furnaces, which are now predominantly used in the extraction of iron. Ore processing also requires physical separation, including crushing, grinding and water removal (Sun et al., 2015).The increase in steel consumption favors the exploitation of low-concentration ores and the production of pellets (Halt and Kawatra, 2014). Pellet quality is affected by various factors, such as their physical and chemical characteristics and their temperatures and residence times in the furnace (Halt, Silva and Kawatra, 2015). Different geological settings lead to a wide range of different minerals (Graça et al., 2015).This work aims to generate important information for the pellet industry in the area of physical and metallurgical qualities of the agglomerates obtained by two processes: traveling grate and grate kiln."

Rapid growth in the rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of Federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing Federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

American Girl Mine is located in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains in the southeastern Imperial Valley of Southern California. Production from the current open pit mine and heap leach recovery system began in early 1989. Previous mining and gold recovery took place commencing in 1987 at the Padre Madre site, situated adjacent to the American Girl site to the southwest. In mid-1990, a 790-tonne-per-day underground gold mine and mill went into production. Approximately 6,500 troy ounces of gold per month are recovered from the combined open pit underground mine operation. Copper in the form of Azurite [Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2] and Malachite [Cu2CO3(OH)2] are abundant in the mined ores (Henshaw, 1942). The high solubility of these minerals in caustic cyanide solutions has a negative impact on carbon adsorption and electrowin processes. This paper presents the results of monitoring programs, process chemistry, and control changes introduced at American Girl Mine to abate production complications in the refinery and measures taken to minimize solution gold losses in the adsorption circuit(s).
