Allis Mineral Systems' GRATE-CAR agglomeration/induration/reduction process is currently being operated to process ilmenite at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS in Tyssedal, Norway. In this process, balled ilmenite concentrate is fed to a traveling grate where pellets are dried and preheated, using fully oxidized kiln exhaust gas. Hot preheated, semi-indurated pellets are fed directly to a ported kiln where reduction of the ilmenite's iron oxide fraction occurs in the presence of lump coal. The reduced pellet sand coal char are discharged from the kiln to an indirect rotary drum cooler. Cooled pellets and char are screened and magnetically separated prior to their further processing in a downstream smelting operation. The pellets are melted and the titanium dioxide and iron are separated. Operation commenced in late 1986.

As nations advance through various stages of economic development, the patterns of demand for minerals change. For example, as a nation develops from a subsistence economy through industrialization and into a service based economy, the use of minerals is at first low, then grows rapidly, and finally stabilizes. The past trends in the use of agricultural minerals by the currently advanced nations provide a pattern that the world as a whole may follow as it progresses through the stages of economic development. Future needs for agricultural minerals are estimated using this approach.

The implementation of advance control systems brings with it the expectation of improvements in process performance and controllability. Specifically, expectations include a shift in the mean value of the gross measure of process performance, and/or a decrease in process variability. When determining statistically-defensible measures of these benefits care must be taken to preclude process parameters from biasing the determination. Specifically, the effects of ore type, shift personnel, water availability, etc., must all be separated from the effect on performance of the advanced control system. Methods are presented for separating the effects of process control from other process parameters. Examples of the required data analyses are also presented.

Chlorination and carbochlorination processes have industrial applications in metallurgical activity for extraction and purification of uncommon metals such as rare earth elements (REE). This study reviews the chlorination and carbochlorination reactions of light REE (LREE) oxides with chlorine considering the thermodynamic, stoichiometric, and kinetic aspects of the reactions. Lanthanides between lanthanum to gadolinium were considered as LREE, in agreement with previous literature, and the results were detailed in this review. LREE were analyzed taking into account their oxidation states and were divided into three groups accordingly. The results presented show that, although the LREE are chemically similar, their behaviors during the reactions with Cl2 and Cl2–C, and the different LREE-O–Cl compounds formed, have particularities. It was observed that gadolinium, in both thermodynamic calculations and experimental results, presents some differences, and it can be considered intermediate between light and heavy REE; i.e., reactions between LREE2O3 and Cl2(g) begin at approximately 250 °C, except for Gd2O3 that begins at 327 °C. The present work will contribute to a better understanding of the chemistry of LREE oxides and Cl2 under different conditions and the products obtained in the LREE–O––Cl2(g) and LREE–O–C–Cl2(g) systems.

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon's pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon's pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (15%) of Professor Gershon's pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

Abstract-Since 1982, the US Bureau of Mines has inves¬tigated improvements in protection for operators of thin seam shuttle cars. Due to working height restrictions in thin seam mines (<_1.22 m or 48 in.). Federal mine regulations require that canopy protection on shuttle cars he provided only in mines >_1.07 m (42 in.). However, court obtained variances are granted to mines <_1.22 m (48 in). This paper presents ongoing research to design and evaluate a uniquely positioned, ergonomic compartment for a shuttle car that provides the operator with full canopy protection in working heights of 1.02 m (40 in.).

The Niblack polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits are located on Prince of Wales Island in southeast Alaska, approximately 50 km southwest of Ketchikan. The property hosts a number of polymetallic volcanogenic sulfide occurrences within the folded Lookout rhyolite volcanic succession. The Lookout deposit is the primary focus of current resource delineation and contains an indicated resource of 4,136,000 tonnes at 1.13% Cu, 2.32 g/t Au, 2.27% Zn, 38.70 g/t Ag and an inferred resource of 1,736,000 tonnes at 1.09% Cu, 1.77 g/t Au, 2.02% Zn, and 25.52 g/t Ag as of March 2011. Sulfide mineralization is interpreted to have formed sub-seafloor, within permeable felsic fragmental volcanic rocks. Sulfide minerals of economic interest include chalcopyrite and Fe-poor, Zn-rich sphalerite. Of considerable importance, the Lookout deposit contains elevated gold that occurs as inclusions within the base metal sulfides.

Introduction The efficient process control of a uranium mill and its associated mining operation requires a nearly continuous knowledge of the uranium concentration in the ore. Generally, the approach is to use laboratory assays of grab samples from the mill feed belt. In some cases, elaborate and expensive systems have been used to ensure random sampling, but even with these systems, mass-balance discrepancies still exist. There is a requirement for an on-line instrument that can give a prompt, accurate analysis of a large portion of the feed stock. The authors have recently evaluated a laboratory system that achieves these goals using neutron activation and delayed neutron counting. The development of the on-line uranium ore analyzer is a consequence of previous work done at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment (WNRE) (Campbell et al., 1978 and 1981), and is based on the emission of delayed neutrons after the neutron irradiation of fissionable materials. The mechanism of delayed neutron emission has been described (Keepin, 1965), but briefly is as follows. The fission fragments resulting from irradiation are in an excited state. Certain of these delayed fission products, precursors, decay to a more stable state by the emission of a delayed neutron. The delayed neutrons can be divided into six groups with effective half-lives ranging from 0.2-55 sec. It is important to note that more than 50% of the delayed neutrons are emitted within the first 6 sec after irradiation; this has an influence on the design of the analysis instrument. Measurement Cycle The measurement cycle involves a neutron irradiation, a delay time, and a counting period. The laboratory demonstration model of the ore analyzer comprises a californium-252 neutron source, a source chamber, a pneumatic transfer facility, and a neutron irradiation and counting module (Fig. 1). The ore sample is placed in the irradiation chamber. The neutron source is transferred to the center of the chamber for a 5-sec irradiation while the helium-3 thermal neutron detectors are switched off. As the source returns to the storage chamber, the detectors are switched on and the delayed neutrons counted. The total assay cycle is 16 sec. The current instrument design calls for the ore to be cut from the main belt every 16 sec by a mechanical arm and dropped into the analyzer directly, or via another belt. The cycle starts when there is a sufficient mass of ore in the irradiation chamber to depress a switch and stops when the delayed neutron count is finished. The ore is then dropped through the bottom of the analyzer chamber and returned to the main belt. The counts from each cycle are accumulated and the data reduced to give the desired information. The source is contained in an iron capsule and pneumatically transferred between the irradiation/counting and storage chambers. The irradiation/counting chamber possesses 12, 600-mm (24-in.) long helium-3 thermal neutron detectors embedded in an annulus of wax (Fig. 1). Two sets of six detectors are each interfaced to a preamplifier, amplifier and single-channel pulseheight analyzer system, and the two systems are connected to a scaler. A special timing unit controls the transfer of the source and the on and off switching of the detector assembly, in sequence with the movement of the source. Results and Discussion In the experimental demonstration, using the 107 neutron.s-1 source, a 10% uranium ore was measured to ± 10% (2o total error) in 10 cycles and ±6% (2o) in 100 cycles. Since a larger source was not available, it can be statistically predicted that a 109 neutron-s-1 source could be used to measure a 0.1% ore to ± 10% (20) in 10 cycles. With the exception of the development of large scale mining equipment (haul trucks, draglines, shovels, etc.), there are likely few other candidates responsible for the ability to exploit large tonnage, low grade deposits, than the development of large capacity comminution equipment and circuits; crushers and grinding mills. Ball mills are often the final step in the comminution process and are responsible for providing what should be the optimum particle size distribution of ore to subsequent mineral concentration steps in the flowsheet. Because comminution processes are such high cost centers for milling operations, both capital and operating costs, an enormous amount of research has been conducted to study and model their performance, in order to improve efficiencies (Kelsall, et al., 1969; Austin et al., 1984; Napier-Munn, et al., 1999; Powell and Smit, 2001). With respect to modeling ball mills, estimates of the breakage rates for individual size classes of ore particles are fundamental, as are the particle size class breakage functions (the progeny of particle sizes produced from breaking a coarser particle size class), also termed appearance functions. Fundamental research into particle breakage in tumbling mills focuses on how much energy is input into single particles versus how they break and what size distribution of particles results. Several test methods, including JKMRC?s well known dual pendulum test and drop weight test, have been developed for the breakage of coarse particles down to 6 mm in size (Napier-Munn, et al., 1999). Work on the breakage of finer particles is still an area of intense research and single particle breakage is being investigated as are multiple particle, fixed bed methods (Hoffler and Herbst, 1990; Bourgeois et al., 1992; Whiten, 2007).

This paper describes the U. S. Energy Research and Development Administration&apos;s (ERDA) program to develop in situ coal conversion processes, especially gasification, he potential of this technology, the technical directions being explored, and the program strategy to carry the process concepts toward commercialization are emphasized. The geographic location of the U. S. coal resources and a market analysis are described. Commercially successful in situ coal processes could add over a trillion tons of coal to the U. S. coal reserves. The economics of these processes is compared with surface gasification independent studies show this process to be 25Z cheaper than surface gasification for Western coals. The major projects are briefly described. The Linked Vertical Well process is in the lost advanced stage and shows great promise. The last test produced a low-Btu gas averaging 171 Btu per standard cubic foot for average pro¬duction rates of 5.5 million standard cubic feet per day. The other projects are Packed Bed, Longwall Generator, and Steeply Dipping Beds.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13-km (8-mile) overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is a conventional three-roller, 35 degree trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design resulted in a 5.4-m/sec (17.7-ft/sec) belt speed, 1,000 mm- (40 in.-) belt width to convey 1.35 kt/h (1,490 stph) and 7 Mt/a (7.7 million stpy) of coal. Despite a high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 m/sec (21 ft/sec) in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput in-crease. In 2002, a new low loss ST2100 1,100 mm- (43 in.-) wide belt replaced the ST2250 that was due to be changed-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to increase the OLC capacity to 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy). Upgrading the OLC by increasing the belt speed was the lowest capital option. Increasing belt width and/or modifying the trough angle to have larger cross sectional area was not an economical option because it would require expensive changes and significant down time of the OLC. To achieve 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy), the belt speed had to be increased to 8.5 m/sec (28 ft/sec). Although such high belt speed looked feasible, there was no information at that time of other OLC operating at such high speed. There was a risk that the conveyor would not operate safely and reliably at higher speeds. This risk was escalated by the fact there was no facility to lower or fine-tune the belt speed once the higher belt speed was implemented.

This paper is concerned with mineral policy in Ireland and how it might be improved to encourage more exploration and investment in mining in the country. The approach is to first outline the main desirable characteristics of a comprehensive national mineral policy document. This aspirational document is then used to assess the current regulatory, legislative and fiscal frameworks for mining in Ireland. The analysis also contains a brief account of the history, structure and characteristics of the mining industry in Ireland. The main focus of the paper is to identify those aspects of the existing framework that erode Ireland’s attractiveness to mineral investment and to suggest policy improvements.

On July 24, 2002, a nonfatal entrapment accident occurred at the Quecreek #1 Mine, Black Wolf Coal Company, when an active mining section inadvertently cut into a flooded abandoned mine. This incident, and the dramatic rescue which ensued, brought national attention to a common problem in the coal mining industry. Since 1995, there have been more than 100 inundations at coal mines in the United States. Unavailable, inaccurate, or incomplete mapping of older abandoned mines is typically responsible. Serious problems associated with accidental discharges of fluid mine waste material (slurry) and water from coal refuse disposal facilities have resulted from similar causes. Recent problems related to the inaccurate location of old abandoned mine works have increased the interest in the use of conventional and emerging drilling and geophysical techniques for detection of air-filled and water-filled cavities. The United States Congress has committed significant funding toward investigating the applicability of these technologies. MSHA actively promotes the use of the best available technology to minimize the significant adverse safety and environmental consequences associated with unplanned breakthroughs and inundations. This paper provides background information and a general summary of the MSHA-sponsored field demonstration projects which are currently in progress. Potential benefits and limitations are discussed. The need for field verification/ground-truthing is emphasized. Under appropriate conditions, geophysical methods can be effectively integrated into a comprehensive field exploration program.

1977 was the modern day low point for productivity in the coal industry. At that time, no one could have predicted that the industry was about to enter a productivity rise that would continue unabated through the 1980s. Thirteen years later, the cause of this phenomenon is still not well understood. While many government studies focused on the fall in productivity from 1969 to 1977, none have been undertaken to explain the rise. Some of the likely causes of the gain in productivity during this period will be discussed here. An attempt will also be made to quantify the value of some of the technical innovations that have taken place. The remainder of the gain is assumed to come from non-technical sources. The nature of these sources, although largely non-quantifiable, is also discussed. Since the number of mines that have adopted the technical innovations noted here is largely unknown, the actual contribu¬tion of technological changes to the overall productivity gain can only be estimated.

INTRODUCTION In June of 2004, at the North American Tunneling Conference in Atlanta, an all-day workshop was conducted to review the application of Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBRs) for underground construction. The moderator for the program was Bart Bartholomew, former President of Fruin Colnon Construction Company. The program involved commentary by a panel of engineers, owners, contractors, and legal representatives within the North American tunneling industry, as well as an extended audience discussion. The panelists were: Peter Douglass, President, Peter Douglass, Inc. Randall Essex, Executive Vice President, Hatch Mott MacDonald Joseph Gildner, Deputy Director for Technical Services, Sound Transit Randall Hafer, Esq., Kilpatrick Stockton Robert Fitzgerald Esq., Watt, Tieder, Hoffer, & Fitzgerald Kirk Samuelson, Senior Vice President, Kiewit Construction Group DEVELOPMENT OF PROGRAM FORMAT The focus of the program was to assess the state of the practice in the preparation of GBRs, and to discuss improvements that could and should be made with regard to their preparation, interpretation, and application. The approach used to achieve this focus in the broadest possible way was unique, in that it involved the panelists’ preparation of the workshop format and materials months before the presentation of the workshop. First, each of the six panelists was selected by the moderator based on their reputation and involvement in their respective fields of expertise, taking care to maintain balance and contrast within the collective pool of talent assembled. Following selection and agreement to serve on the panel, each panelist was asked to independently submit to the moderator a list of the six most pressing issues involving GBRs that they each frequently encountered in their individual professional experience. Each was asked to rank their issues in descending order of perceived importance. This process resulting in a pool of thirty-six potential or “candidate” issues for use in the workshop program. Contrary to the moderator’s expectations, there was surprisingly little duplication among the thirty-six issues submitted.

Soda ash is the trade name for sodium carbonate, a chemical refined from the mineral trona or naturally occurring sodium carbonate-bearing brines (both referred to as natural soda ash) or manufactured from one of several chemical processes (referred to as synthetic soda ash). It is an essential raw material in glass, chemicals, detergents and other important industrial products. Production U.S. soda ash production during 2004 increased to10.9 million Mt (12 million st). Five companies comprised the domestic soda ash industry. Four were in Wyoming operating five plants. One was in California with one plant.

Partition models are commonly used to assess the separation performance of circuits incorporating density-based processes. Unfortunately, this useful tool has traditionally been overlooked by the heavy minerals sands industry due to difficulties associated with the use of toxic dense liquids. In the present study, this problem has been avoided via the development of partition models based on experimental data from microscopic grain-counts. This technique, which uses different mineral species as density tracers, provides a new tool for evaluating the multi-stage circuits that are required to successfully upgrade heavy mineral sands. The partition model approach easily identifies shortcomings of existing circuits and, when used with conjunction with linear circuit analysis, provides tremendous insight regarding the optimum arrangement of unit operations in terms of separation efficiency and plant throughput capacity. An industrial case involving the redesign of a heavy mineral sand spiral plant is presented to demonstrate the utility of these process engineering tools in plant optimization.

The rate of hydration influences many important physical properties of gypsum. Previous research examined the rate of gypsum hydration and related this to compressive strength and microstructure development using BET specific surface area analysis. The analysis of gypsum porosity in combination with BET surface area and rate of hydration remains to be done. In the present study, mesoporosity is analyzed using the numerical method of Barrett, Joyner and Halenda (BJH) to gain a greater understanding of gypsum hydration and microstructure development. The rate of hydration has a significant effect on mesoporosity of the gypsum matrix. The results reveal the effect of mesoporosity and hydration rate on some macro physical properties of gypsum.

Oil sand tailings are disposed of in large ponds in which MFT (Mature Fine Tailings, a stable suspension of fine particles in water) forms after many years of settling. Long-term storage of large volumes of MFT is costly to maintain and also poses an environmental liability. The Advanced Separation Technologies laboratory at CANMET Western Research Centre has worked closely with oil sand companies to eliminate MFT generation by applying paste technology to oil sand tailings. In this process the fine tailings are flocculated to produce a thickened material that has the potential to consolidate to a dry landscape, while warm water is recovered and recycled for reuse in the extraction process. This paper presents some results of an extensive technical program involving bench-scale tests for flocculant selection and continuous thickener pilot tests.
