The gold mining and ore processing operations of Minera Yanacocha S.A. are 10cated in an area 4,000 meters above sea level in the Peruvian Andes same 600 km north of Lima and 20 km north of Cajamarca. The joint venture partners are Newmont Second Capital (USA); Compania Minera Condesa (Peril); Mine Or (France) and the IFC. Newmont manages the operation. The Yanacocha district comprises several areas with mineralization evidence. The first ore with minable reserves of 28 million tonnes of ore assaying about 1.4 gpt Au is called Carachugo and is being mined and treated at the rate of 14,000 tonnes of ore per day by open pit mining methods. ROM ore is dump leached and the gold recovered in a Merrill Crowe plant. The plant design incorporates some unusual considerations to overcome the problems of the high rainfall in this area and assure the protection of the environment.

Most mines are large producing 0-25 mmt annually. The coal is mine.) at depths ranging from .0-150 m 120-500 ft mining at 300 m .(,1000 ft) depth is anticipated in the future. Single and multiple seams ranging from 3-12 m 10-40 ft) in thickness are mined. Most overburden is unconsolidated and consists of sands, and sandy or silty clays. The stripping ratio (volume of overburden to volume of coal mined) varies from 3-L. The overburden and coal is mined in benches 8-12 m -(24-40ft) high; the high-wall angle is about 45 degrees. Bucket wheel and bucket chain excavators are commonly utilized for overburden and coal removal, Some of the large overburden stripping machines nave capacities. Ranging from 4400-10,000 bank cu ( 6000-14,000 BC) per hour. The overburden from the upper benches is transported around the pit using the trains and belt conveyors. It is deposited in the spoils using large stacker-conveyor systems capable of handling 2550-7300 cu m/hour (7500-10,000 cu yds/hour). The overburden from the bottom two or three benches is transported across the pit using the conveyor bridges which are computer controlled. Conveyor bridges capable of handling overburden up to 60 m (200 ft) high are currently in use; a 60 a (20e ft) high conveyor bridge has a capacity of 85 x 10 cu ( 118 x 10 cu yd) annually. The coal is loaded in the trains directly and shipped to power plants or coke oven plants.

Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is known to be an effective pyrrhotite depressant in pentlandite flotation. It has been reported recently that its performance becomes more consistent when the reagent is used in conjunction with sulfur dioxide (SO2). In the present investigation, the effects of DETA and SO32- ions on the changes in the hydrophobicity of pyrrhotite electrode have been studied at pH 6.8. The results show that both DETA and SO32- can reduce the water contact angles of pyrrhotite; however, the contact angles can be reduced to zero only in the presence of the SO32- ions. This finding may be attributed to the ability of the SO32- ions to reduce the polysulfides formed on pyrrhotite by superficial oxidation, which may in turn provides an explanation for the robust performance of DETA/SO2 combination.

Low-rank/oxidized coals respond poorly to oil agglomeration. Emulsification of kerosene in the presence of surfactants dramatically reduces the size of the kerosene droplets. While this dramatically reduces the amount of oil that is required for efficient agglomeration (down to 0.25-0.5%), more importantly, the surfactants entirely change the electrokinetic properties of the oil droplets and thus the interaction between oil droplets and coal particles. Consequently, kerosene cationic emulsions can efficiently agglomerate oxidized coal particles. The agglomerates obtained in such a process can still be recovered by screening. Surfactants can affect fine coal filtration very profoundly when used to emulsify the oil which is utilized to agglomerate coal prior to its filtration. This sequence is much more logical than the use of flocculants - highly hydrophilic polymers - as filtration additives to aid dewatering of flotation concentrates. Although such polymers flocculate coal particles, they also render coal surfaces hydrophilic and make reduction of the cake moisture content difficult.

In the Canadian mining industry, there are at present no comprehensive regulations or standards for valuation of mineral properties. In January 1999, the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) establish a committee to review and advise on approaches and methodologies for the valuation of mineral properties. The authors were subsequently appointed Co-chairs of the CIM Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal). A committee of experts from the mining industry, consulting, financial and legal communities was established with the task of reviewing available information, investigating various valuation methodologies and practices, soliciting input from interested parties, and recommending a Canadian code or standards plus guidelines for the valuation of mineral properties. As an initial stage of its work, the CIMVal Committee organized a one day session at the Mining Millennium 2000 Convention in Toronto in March 2000 on valuation of mineral properties. The 10 invited papers have been published by CIM. As a second stage, CIMVal has requested input and comments from all interested parties. The next stage will be to prepare a preliminary draft with a recommended code or standards and guidelines. This will be circulated for further input and comments prior to revision and publication of another draft. The final CIMVal report should be completed in early 2001. A variety of methods are in common usage for the valuation of mineral properties, depending on the stage of development of the property, the data available and the experience of the valuator. For example, the discounted cash flow method is commonly used for properties in production or at the feasibility stage, but is not generally considered appropriate for exploration properties. Market approaches such as comparable transactions are in wide general use, and various cost approaches are used for exploration properties. The option pricing approach has promise for valuation of marginal properties, but is not commonly used.

Gentlemen; Rainy day in Upper Michigan, a good time to catch up on reading. Am doing that, and have a couple of questions concerning the K and P paper on roof problems and supports. I wonder if the authors can enlighten me. The compressive strength of the coal was reported as 4.4 MPa (633 psi) and compressive stresses measured in the coal seam were reported at around 27.6 and 48.2 MPa (4000 and 7000 psi ). Can such a soft coal actually contain such a high level of stress? Can it be measured as if the material were elastic, or does the coal behave plastically? Can that stress level be confirmed with hydraulic load cells? And if the coal is so soft, and if it is plastic, why is the stress field not hydrostatic? The intact roofrock appears to be unusually strong, with compressive strength reported at around 145 MPa (21,000 psi), and some failures were noted as soon as the rock was exposed. Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. This article is part of a presentation Strauss made Dec. 3, 1988 at the sixth annual American Mining Hall of Fame (AMHofF) banquet in Tucson, AZ. At the banquet, the Mining Club of the Southwest honored Strauss by naming him the 1988 recipient to the AMHofF. (Industry newswatch, page 6). Introduction In the last two decades, there have been two previous periods of sharply rising copper prices. One was in 1973-74; the other in 1979-80. In both cases, a short period of high copper prices was followed by steep and prolonged periods of low prices. In the language of the market analyst, the high prices were called spikes. Is it likely, then, that three or four years from now the present price of copper will show up as a spike in the charts? There are substantial differences between the current position and the markets of 1973-74 and 1979-80. In 1973-74, US copper prices were subject to government-imposed price ceilings of $0.60 per lb through early December, 1973. These were increased to $0.68 per lb through May, 1974. Meanwhile, mines outside the United States were free of restraint. Rising demand in London pushed the price above $1 per lb in the third quarter of 1973. In early April 1974, it reached a peak of $1.50 a lb. In May of that year, the US ceilings were removed and the domestic price began to rise. What were the causes of this price strength? While ceilings held the domestic price below the world market, domestic consumers acquired all the tonnage offered by US mines. Meanwhile, in the world market, buyers feared prolonged shortages. The Club of Rome had warned that world economic growth would be limited by impending depletion of mineral resources. There was al so concern about a copper cartel that might increase copper prices even more. In early 1974, at a special United Nations session, developing-country spokesmen warned the industrialized world to expect high commodity prices. Also adding to the concerns of copper buyers was the fear that when US wage contracts expired in mid-1974, protracted strikes might ensue. The combined effect of this atmosphere was that consumers accumulated large amounts of copper, far above their normal carry. By midsummer, the position changed radically. While some strikes did occur in the United States, they proved short-lived. The most significant development was a massive economic recession. The energy crisis was causing enormous dislocations in the world economy. Construction activities were sharply reduced and automobile sales plummeted. Public confidence was shaken. Copper sales fell precipitately as consumers decided to draw down their swollen inventories. The price came down too. In April 1974, the London price- as noted-was $1.50 per lb. By the end of the year, it was down to $0.57 per lb. In 1973-74, the copper price rise was fed by fears of shortages, cartels, and strikes. In 1979-80, the market rose on the strength of good demand plus political and military instability. The price rise was also fed by inflationary trends, exemplified by speculation in precious metals. Prior to this second spike in copper prices, the market had been depressed despite economic recovery. Despite reduced US output, copper production in the rest of the world was increasing. Though consumption was rising, surplus stocks reached unprecedented levels. At the end of 1977, the aggregate of stocks at the refineries and in the exchange warehouses was 1.5 Mt (1.67 million st). That was more than three months' shipments at then rates of consumption. In 1978, the statistical position improved. Shipments of refined copper that year were 8% greater than in 1977. The result was reduced visible stocks but -just as was to be the case in 1984-86 - the price remained depressed. In 1979, an even sharper drop in visible stocks occurred as shipments rose by another 4%. This time, though, the price responded. In December 1978, the price in current dollars had been less than $0.70 per lb. By the end of 1979, it was above $1 per lb. And in the first quarter of 1980, it averaged more than $1.20 per lb. Military and political developments were a factor. The hostage crisis in Iran was followed by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. To many, it appeared that war might result if the Soviets pushed on into Pakistan. At the same time, speculation drove gold and silver prices to incredible levels. As silver prices rose above $40 per oz), copper above $1 per lb did not seem unreasonable. Then, in March 1980, the precious metals price boom collapsed. Copper prices also retreated, though not as much. In February 1980, the copperprice averaged $1.32 per lb. By December, it had dropped to $0.85 per lb. In 1981 and 1982, the decline continued. The present copper situation Why is the current situation different from these two previous episodes of high prices? First of all, today's inventories are far lower than they were in either 1974 or 1980, when the price declines began. The stocks at refineries and in exchange warehouses are substantially less than they were then. More significantly, consumers today have very limited holdings compared with stocks they carried in 1974 and 1980. Even if faced with a downturn in their own business, copper consumers will not be able to stay out of the market. To the extent they have any business at all, they will have to buy copper. And on the supply side, there is also a significant difference. The year 1988 has been unusual. US production is up sharply, responding to higher prices. But production is little changed in the rest of the Free World. Indeed, several of the major producing countries have mined less copper this year than in 1987 despite the prices increases. Peru has had labor problems that have cut its output. Zambia and Zaire suffer from shortages of expatriate technicians, not to mention spare parts. They also suffer from the failure to maintain equipment or perform adequate development. In Chile, the two largest mines, Chuquicamata and El Teniente, have not met their production targets. Chuquicamata is struggling with high arsenic content in its ore. And, in late 1987, severe rockbursts hampered operations at El Teniente. In addition, depletion of some mines in Australia and South Africa has offset rising output at other properties. Indeed, when final mine output figures for 1988 become available, it may well be

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2004 was estimated to be 635 kt (700,000 st). This was a 2-percent increase from 2003. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $164 million in 2004. Production was from six companies with 13 processing facilities in four states. Nevada and California were the principal producing states. They accounted for about78 percent of the U.S. production during 2004. U.S. diatomite exports were about 136 kt (150,000 st). Imports were negligible.

INTRODUCTION The need for cleaning and recovery of fine (minus 28 mesh or 0.5 mm) coal fraction has increased in recent years. This results from realizing a substantial recovery of ultraclean coal from the waste stream improving overall Btu (heat) recovery, providing extra revenue for the coal industry. Also the potential of using the clean coal so obtained for making coal-water mixture which could replace oil. An additional benefit of recovery clean coal from the waste stream is reducing environmental concern of burning uncleaned coal and in waste disposal. Deashing of coal by physical beneficiation processes is limited by the degree to which ash components are liberated from coal. Conventional processes have been inefficient in terms of Btu recovery, for ultrafine coal. Chemical cleaning methods, which involves leaching of ash material from coal, have provided ultraclean coal at high Btu recoveries, are more costly than the physical cleaning methods. An advanced physical separation technique that appears to address the need discussed above is selective flocculation. This technique which has been successfully utilized in iron ore beneficiation offers the potential of processing fine and ultrafine coal to produce a clean fuel. OBJECTIVES The main objective of the present study is to investigate applicability of selective flocculation technique for recovery of clean coal product from the waste coal slurry supplied by the Peabody Coal co., from their three different coal preparation plants. It is also the objective of the program to conduct preliminary economic study of the selective flocculation process.

The sillimanite group includes the aluminosilicate minerals sillimanite, kyanite and and alusite, all of which have the same chemical composition (Al2SiO5). This discussion also includes the closely related mineral, mullite(about Al6Si3O15), which, although rare in nature, is produced artificially for industrial use. All of the minerals in this group have a low coefficient of thermal expansion and high corrosion resistance. This makes them desirable for refractory applications, especially in the steel and foundry industries. Other uses include electrical insulators, abrasives and household ceramic products. The minerals in the sillimanite group decompose with an irreversible expansion at temperatures between 1,300° C and 1,600° C (2,372° F and 2,912° F). Sillimanite and and alusite have relatively small expansion on decomposition (4 percent to 6 percent) and, therefore, can be used as aggregates in refractory products. Kyanite’s expansion on decomposition is large (18 percent). So it is sometimes used to balance shrinkage of other materials such as clays in refractory mixtures. For applications requiring high-temperature volume stability, mullite is more desirable. As an additive, mullite improves resistance to creep and corrosion, and imparts thermal and electrical insulating properties.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview and details of good practice, from a United Kingdom perspective, in the development and implementation of major tunnel and underground infrastructure projects. In doing so, it draws on a broad base of project management theory. A central theme is that successful project delivery is dependent on detailed planning of the complete project delivery process, forming an effective team that works well together and the proper management of risk. The role of partnering in forming a strong project coalition is described. Particular emphasis is given to the integration of design and construction, and the role of the designer throughout the construction phase. The implementation of risk management in the design and construction of tunnel works is discussed, and recommendations are made on how risk, value and constructability can be integrated in project delivery. Recent practice in project procurement, particularly in the use of innovative collaborative forms of contract are described, and details of particular provisions for joint management of risk and problem resolution are provided. Finally, the relevance of the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works to good practice in project delivery is highlighted throughout the paper.

Dry coal separation technology has particular advantages in the applications in arid and cold regions, or low rank coal separation. The hazardous pollutants in low rank coals can not be efficiently removed by conventional wet coal separation processes because a considerable amount of porose and easily friable low rank coals suffer serious particle size degradation problems in water. In this paper, a novel dry coal separation method with a vibrated air-fluidized bed of magnetic fly ash and magnetite is put forward for dry coal beneficiation. The magnetic fly ash used in this study was derived from fly ash obtained as a byproduct of coal combustion. The vibration?s effect on the uniformity and stability of a magnetic fly ash air-fluidized bed was studied. The 6×0.5 mm dry coal separation results with a vibrated air-fluidized bed of magnetic fly ash and magnetite showed that the probable error E value of separation is 0.06-0.08 t/m3.

The development of mechanical flotation cells has resulted in larger and better cells. This has led to flotation banks with only a few units, even in large-scale operations. This equipment development makes the old operational considerations ineffective. The flotation cell must be considered as a single reactor unit capable of handling specific tasks and getting excellent metallurgical performance. The result of the unit reactor concept development was the new large TankCell that comes in sizes up to 113 m3 (4,000 cu ft). The TankCell construction includes new modified rotor-stator designs, new tank geometries and a froth-handling capability independent from subprocesses taking place in the pulp (i.e., air addition). The conventional idea of a single flotation cell type for fine, intermediate and coarse materials does not give optimal results. Optimal flotation of coarse and fine particles needs different mechanism designs, impeller tip speeds and different froth control objectives.

The extractive industries addition to the International Valuation Standards (IVS) is scheduled for publication in the next edition of the IVS book in January 2005. This will provide guidance for valuation of minerals and petroleum industry assets of all types for all appraisal uses. It will provide asset valuation support to the International Financial Reporting Standards for the stock markets of the world, and a global umbrella standard which can be supplemented for local needs by institutes and regulators. This paper discusses implementation of the IVS within the minerals industry and important issues that the industry should confront.

Introduction The mining of aggregates underground has grown steadily over the last 25 years. Growth has come in both production volume and in the importance this segment of the industry is playing in the continuing supply of construction aggregate. Underground aggregate mines will continue to grow in both number of operations and complexity, as the replacement of zoned reserves in metropolitan areas becomes crucial. This growth will result in a shortage of qualified mine managers, possibly limiting the success of these facilities. The aggregate industry will have to modify current practices in order to meet the growing demand for this specialized skill. Segment Growth Underground mining for aggregates is not a new idea. Martin Marietta has been operating underground mines since 1969, and currently operates 16 underground mines ranging in size from 250,000 tpy to 2,500,000 tpy. These mines represent less than 4% of the total number of operating locations, but contributed 9% of the annual production in 2004. Though they range in size and production capacity, the importance is evident. The 2000 United States Census revealed several trends that are of interest to the aggregate mining industry. For the period 1990-2000 the U.S. population grew by 33 million or 13%. There were nine major metropolitan areas with a population of five million or more. These nine areas accounted for 30% of the total U.S. population. More significant was the fact that the population growth in these nine metro areas was 25% of the growth for the entire country. These statistics tell us that the population is expanding in these major metropolitan areas at a staggering rate. The same thing is happening to some degree in every population center. Population growth increases the demand for local aggregate while reducing the available area to mine that aggregate. The need for an economical supply of aggregate to support community expansion is a problem that will grow as older quarries are mined out and closed. This will be an issue that communities of all sizes will have to deal with. A reliable and cost effective supply of quality aggregate is crucial to support community expansion.

Paul Y. – SELI Joint Venture had been contracted to build the longest section of the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) – Stage I. This involved two tunnels under urban and marine areas excavated by high performance hard rock open type TBMs operated from deep shafts. A specific ground treatment program was developed using advance probing and grouting to control water inflow into the excavations. The article describes: the technologies adopted, the experienced problems, the encountered productions and their interrelation with the water inflow amounts, the possible improvement in the technologies for the excavation of the future stages of the same project as well of any other project under similar conditions.

Investment in the ferrous sector between 1981 and 1985 will total about $9 billion, or 7.6% of the state budget for capital assets. The money will primarily go to complete the first stage of the Baoshan Iron and Steel complex and to increase steel production by 3 Mt* (3.3 million st) and seamless tubing by 0.5 Mt (551,000 st). Investment in 1983 will be about $3.5 billion, a 28% increase over 1981. Although data on nonferrous investment is less specific, the Chinese announced early this spring that the country's investment would be 2.6 times greater than the average spent during the previous five year plans. Geological surveying will also be stepped up. The Ministry of Geology and Minerals recently announced it will incorporate a search for metal and mineral resources into its second round of oil and gas surveys. The Sixth Five-Year Plan desig¬nates some actual production targets. Steel is to increase to more than 72 Mt (79.4 million st). The country's production of 10 priority nonferrous metals - aluminum (and bauxite), copper, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium, and titanium - is to increase 12.7%. Top priority is to develop aluminum production. Renewed efforts are to be made to develop gold and silver production and to increase rare earth and rare metal production. By April 1983 when the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. was established, some five months after publication of the Five-Year Plan, the goals for nonferrous development had already been upgraded and changed to include: • development priority status equal to that of coal's; • an increase of more than 150% in the 1985 projected production level for the 10 top nonferrous metals (a move from the Sixth Five-year Plan's production increase of 12.7% to one of 34%); and • modification of the top 10 nonferrous metals list to include tungsten, molybdenum, and rare earths. Aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc maintained primary importance, while mercury, magnesium, and titanium were deleted. It is likely that the modification will be taken one step further and titanium will be substituted for antimony. China has already indicated its intentions to stabilize rather than expand its antimony industry, while press reports play up the titanium industry's importance to the country's development. In addition, the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. announced that it expects to register a progressive annual increase of 4% in foreign currency earnings through export. China's nonferrous development efforts, therefore, appear two-pronged. First, the country's efforts will be directed toward self-sufficiency in its four major process and primary metals - aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead - and a number of other nonferrous metals that are in increasing demand by its light industry sector. At present, 96% of China's non¬ferrous consumption is composed of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. Substantial portions of that must be imported to meet rising demand. Second, efforts will concentrate on those metals that can be developed the fastest and are in "urgent demand" on the international market. Metals such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and rare earths will be given freer use of foreign capital and technology to increase production levels and raise quality. Examples of some projects in the area include upgrading the country's carbide industry and developing new high speed and tool steels to meet international standards. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap that increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flow rate. Silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months to enhance the silver extraction rate. The Coeur-Rochester silver and gold mine, located in central Nevada, is an open pit, heap leach operation that has been in production since late summer of 1986. The facility produces about 15.4 kt/d (17,000 stpd) of -13 mm (-0.5 in.) ore to a leach area consisting of more than 37 hm2 (4 million sq ft) of 80 ml HDPE liner. Crushing is accomplished with a 1220x 1520-mm (48- x 60-in.) jaw crusher. This is followed by a single 2.1-m (7-ft) standard cone crusher and is completed with four 2.1 m (7 ft) short-head cone crushers. Agglomeration is not required for the crushed ore, which contains less than 10% -75. µm (-200 mesh) material. The ore contains 53 g/t (1. 55 oz per st) silver and 0.377 g/t (0.011 oz per st) gold. It is end dumped over previously leached material, leveled, and then ripped with a bulldozer. Drip emitters at 810 mm (32 in.) spacings on 910 mm (36 in.) centers are used to apply barren solution to the heap. A portion of the emitter lines are buried I m (3 ft) deep during the winter months and are placed on the surface the remainder of the year. The leach solution contains 0.75 g/L (750 ppm) sodium cyanide solution at a pH of 10.5 - 11. Dissolved oxygen averages 8 ppm in the pregnant solution. Cyanide consumption for the ore to date is just under 0.2 kg/t (0.4 lb per st). The pH control is accomplished by adding I kg/t (2.0 lb per st) 0-10 mm (-0.4 in.) pebble lime to the ore at the tertiary crusher.
