Introduction Continuous monitoring techniques have been used in the US and abroad for many years. A continuous miner has a monitor that measures methane and automatically gives a warning if the methane exceeds 1%. It deenergizes the continuous mining machine automatically at a maximum concentration of 2%. Main fans are also continually monitored to ensure operation. Alarms may also be given at a remote location should a fan slow or stop. The systems being developed can continuously monitor various gases and equipment throughout the mine and transmit pertinent data to a surface monitoring station. At this station, conditions throughout the mine can be monitored and, in some instances, controlled. These are known as Mine Wide Monitoring Systems (MWMS). History The use of environmental monitoring systems began in 1976 when a federal court approved the petition of modification to use belt air at the face. The first mine to receive a modification did install a system to supplement existing safeguards. Later, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted tests dealing with the use of belt air. Findings from these tests are being used to set guidelines as requirements of a petition. These requirements include: • Velocity of air has to be 0.25 to 1.5 m/sec (50 to 300 fpm); • Monitors will be installed at each belt drive and tailpiece and at intervals not to exceed 610 m (2000 ft); and • An alarm level of 10 ppm, above the ambient level is appropriate. The early uses of environmental monitoring could only be used outby the last open crosscut. That may be a reason for an initial slow growth of these systems. In June 1982, MSHA began evaluating systems that could be used in returns to ensure that monitoring systems being used in areas where permissible equipment is required does not of itself pose an explosion hazard. This is known as the Mine Wide Monitoring Systems Evaluations and Sensor Classification program. The evaluations and classifications granted are based on electric currents and voltages. Use of mine wide monitoring systems The environmental aspect of MWMS in today's coal industry deals with carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), and air velocity. Just as all mines are different and encounter different problems, the MWMS are diverse and can be used to provide necessary data in all areas of coal mines. Mine operators in an ultragassy seam, for example, may be concerned with monitoring methane, while a mine that used diesel equipment may want to continuously monitor for diesel contaminants. In a mine with roof fall problems, airflow monitors may be helpful as an indication of whether the air is flowing in its normal course and at its normal volume. Today's MWMS can monitor any or all of these parameters. Most systems can be expanded as mining needs require. For example, a mine is now being monitored for methane and five years from now CO monitoring would help increase safety. It may be possible to use the same system by adding additional equipment. In the US, 30 environmental monitoring systems were installed from May 1985 through May 1986. In 1984 and 1985, there were 38 and 44 environmental monitoring systems in operation, respectively. Due to mine closings, 11 of these are no longer in use. However, the number of mines using environmental monitoring systems increased to 63. The industrial coal processing trend toward greater fines production, due to mining techniques and customer requirements for reduced ash and sulphur content in the fine coal product, is the basis for ongoing efforts to improve the performance of the flotation machine. WCO has successfully adapted the principles of the beds Column to a full size machine prototype. Recent plant evaluation tests confirmed the initial promise of this concept by achieving a considerably lower ash product while maintaining the combustible recovery level of conventional flotation machinery. The paper will include a review of the fundamental principles of the beds Column concept, together with a summary of the WEMCO R&D Program from concept evaluation and laboratory testing, through pilot, to full size machine tests. The performance of the WEMCO/Leeds flotation column will be compared to conventional flotation concepts using a flotation "kinetics" approach, which quantifies the floatable and non-floatable specie recovery performance using the Klimpel model as the basis for analysis. The variety of distinct features unique to this concept include a series of barrier rods which are used to advantage, often together with countercurrent reflux water flow, to achieve a significant improvement in product grade. The hydrodynamics associated with the mechanics of "gangue stripping" from the rising "air bubble-floatable specie" matrix will be briefly reviewed.

Binders have been suggested as an aid for agglomeration to improve copper recovery in heap leaching operations. However, it has not been established if the use of binders would negatively affect the solvent extraction process, which is used to purify the pregnant leach solution from the heaps and remove any contaminants. Such negative effects would lead to an increase in processing costs or a decreased in copper production. The controlled studies reported here have shown that some binders (a polyacrylamide and a waste treatment additive) did not interfere with the solvent extraction process. Other binders (a polyvinyl acetate emulsion and tall oil pitch) negatively impacted copper solvent extraction and, therefore, should not be used in copper heap leaching plants.

Problems discussed concern encountering of high temperatures [up to 66°C] and heavy flow of water [150 L.P.S] during the construction of the 10.15 MØH.R.T. for the 2500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Project in the Himalayas(India). Over a length of 2500 M progress of work got seriously affected resulting in excessive time for completion - two years [max. monthly progress achieved was 178 M [Heading]. Many innovative and simple steps were taken to complete the work in these inhospitable environs affecting working of both men and machines. Also it meant a review of the design of concrete lining. Other geological conditions affecting the progress are also described.

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the ground treatment performed between January and May 2002 in order to increase safety during excavation and reduce instability problems along 180 m of tunnel, during the construction works associated with line 10 extension to the Madrid Metro. The tunnel was excavated using the traditional Madrid Method and in the section considered in this paper layers of sand were detected around the tunnel crown area with a significant presence of water, the in?ow of which needed to be controlled with a minimum impact on the surrounding environment.

On Friday, May 27, 1983 at about 6 p.m., an avalanche occurred at the Revenue-Virginius Mine. Six mine personnel and two contract diamond drillers were trapped when the avalanche covered and blocked the portal, the only access into the mine. The San Juan Mountain Range in southwestern Colorado is an old volcanic caldera. It has dikes and other intrusions, many of which are mineralized with sulfide ores rich in silver, gold, lead, zinc and copper. Several peaks rise above 4,260 m (14,000 ft) and the district has been the location of avalanches dating back to prehistoric times. This is evidenced by the numerous snow-slide chutes that are infamous enough to be named on topographic maps.

This paper describes the overall delivery of the tunneling for the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand’s Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line in Bangkok and the constraints provided by the alignment. Eight earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines were employed under two major civil works contracts to drive approximately33 kilometers of tunnel in soft saturated ground beneath the crowded streets of Bangkok. Responsibility within the contract for building damage provided an inherent control for ground movement arising form tunneling when the right of way was narrower than the influence zone. These limits affect the earth pressure balance requirements and permissible ground loss. The methods adopted to limit ground movements and deal with the various obstacles to tunneling influenced the design and operation of the machines. The challenges provided by the need to tunnel through numerous lines of piled foundations of canal bridges and overpasses crossing the alignment are described.

An OCS Expert control system was implemented by Svedala Cisa at the Minera Maricunga Refugio Crush-Leach Operation near Copiapo, Chile. The purpose of the Expert system was to maximize production through the primary and secondary crushing circuits and help balance crusher usage between each stage to maximize total plant production. Interesting aspects of the control strategies are discussed. Benefits of the control were verified through a randomized On/Off test program. Tonnage increases ranged from 5% to approximately 20% at good confidence intervals. Benefits analysis results are discussed. The crushing plant at Refugio is very remote and is located at approximately 15,500 ft. This poses many challenges. The effect of altitude and remote location on plant operation are discussed.

The effect of metallic iron fines on froth flotation of a sulfide ore was examined by comparing the flotation results with and without iron fines present in the flotation feed. Mild steel and ceramic laboratory ball mills were used to grind 600 g sulfide ore charges. The mild steel ball mill generated approximately 4.6 g of iron fines (0.8% of the ore charge mass) when grinding to a product size of 80% passing 200 mesh (75 mm). When a low dosage of a weak xanthate collector was used in flotation, the impact of the iron fines on sulfide flotation was marked. Higher dosages of stronger xanthate collectors rendered the impact of the iron fines much less significant. Consumption of the collectors by the powdery iron fines is believed to cause the differences observed in the flotation results. A galvanic effect on flotation was not evident in this study. The impact of the iron fines on silicates depression was also examined.

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels — basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The real GDP during 2004 increased by 4.4 percent. The nominal GDP was about $11.7 trillion. Housing starts were up by slightly more than 4 percent for the year. And the nation’s unemployment rate decreased to5.5 percent in 2004 from 6 percent in 2003. Interest rates continued to be low (prime rate was 5.25 percent at the end of 2004) but have risen gradually, following rising inflation.

Through 1996 and 1997, CANMET and the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) conducted a project to study the Phalen Mine’s 7 East longwall ventilation network to help determine methane emission patterns that were having a negative impact on coal production. Increased methane emissions were primarily related to mining depth and were also affected by the influence of a large sandstone body located above the worked seam. The research included the installation of tube bundle systems to monitor waste (gob) methane and pressure differentials. The focus of this paper is on the novel use of tracer gas techniques that helped shed light on the performance of the ventilation system and in determining the methane migration paths in the waste.

The dewatering of stable phosphatic clay suspensions generated from phosphate beneficiation in the central Florida is an issue of practical and theoretical importance. Because of its tiny particle size and surface charge, the phosphatic clay takes up to 20-30 years to settle in water and causes environmental, aesthetic, economic, and handling problems. An efficient and cost-effective dewatering/consolidation process for phosphatic clay is of great interest to the phosphate industry in Florida. In this paper, the consolidation and dewatering behavior of phosphatic clay was studied by use of anionic flocculants with and without sand addition. The effects of pH, initial polymer concentration, polymer dosage, polymer addition steps, and metal cations (K+, Ca2+, and Al3+) on the flocculation of phosphatic clay have been studied. Experimental results indicated that clay suspensions were well flocculated at pH 10.5 by DPW-1-1355 and Magnafloc 5250 flocculants acquired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Sand particles from phosphate flotation added to the clay slurry promoted flocculation and increased clay consolidation. K+ showed good performance to improve the flocculation characteristics by neutralizing clay surface charge. The adsorption mechanisms of flocculants on clay particles were also discussed in this paper.

As part of the Lake Fort Smith Water Supply Dam Enlargement project, located in northwest Arkansas, microtunneling methods were used to install two side-by-side,1.53m (60-in) inside-diameter steel pipes between the intake structure shaft and the lake. The 46.6 m- (153 ft-) and 41.7 m- (137 ft-) long tunnels were excavated in Pennsylvanian sedimentary bedrock ranging from coarse sandstone to siltstone and shale-like claystone. The intake tunnels were constructed 18.3 m (60 ft) below lake level from the dry shaft. Special installation methods and procedures described herein were used to complete the lake taps. Installation difficulties that caused minor delays are also reviewed. After the excavation of the Intake shaft was completed, the two lake taps were installed in approximately ten weeks with the same microtunneling machine.

Silver Bell produces about 22,000T of fine copper annually from low-grade chalcocite and oxidized copper ore that is recovered by sulfuric acid leaching and SX-EW processing. The current mineable reserves are 146 million short tons averaging 0.39% Cu, at a 0.15% cutoff. Silver Bell utilizes two types of mining methods to develop the low-grade reserves: (1) a conventional blast, load and haul method for run-of-mine leach ore, and (2) rubblization of material on the margins of existing pits. Rubble leach ore is blasted, terraced with a bulldozer, and leached in place. Mining and/or rubble leaching is currently active in four separate pits. Laramide-age intrusive rocks host porphyry copper mineralization at Silver Bell. Quartz monzonite porphyry dikes and stocks, mafic-poor equigranular granite (alaskite), and sub-volcanic dacite porphyry are the predominant host rocks. Most of the ore currently mined comes from near-horizontal enrichment zones containing veinlets and disseminated grains of pyrite and chalcopyrite rimmed by chalcocite. Conversion from a milling operation to a leach only operation allowed for a much lower cutoff grade than was historically used at Silver Bell. Mine geologists were able to increase copper resources by drilling exploration targets that were previously interpreted to provide lower-grade mineralization below cutoff-grade for milling. Geologic parameters that effect the distribution of rubble and mineable leach ore include: ore grade and thickness, variable alteration styles in intrusive host rocks that affect fragmentation during blasting, acid consuming carbonate wallrocks (reactive skarn) which influence leach solution pH, solution flow paths and drainage, presence of leachable oxide mineralization in non-reactive skarn, and depth to hypogene mineralization which is currently uneconomic. Geologic parameters are used to predict rubble bench limits, vary blast hole spacing for consistent fragmentation, and correct errors in mineral zone classification based solely on blast hole assays. An expansion-drilling program has identified approximately 150 million tons of new leachable copper resources with an average grade of 0.35% Cu.

"Northwestern Pacific submarine seamounts are believed to be future marine mining areas of ferromanganese crusts, which contain hi-tech industrial metals, such as Co, Ni, Te, Ti, Pt, and REEs. The Takuyo No. 5 seamount is a member of the Cretaceous super-plume seamounts in the north Pacific, located within a Japanese EEZ (100 nm from the Minami- Torishima Is. or Marcus Is.), and only 300 nm away from the Japan’s Licensed area for exploration of Co-rich ferromanganese crusts under the ISA. This is an on-going program supported by independent academic communities but not a state-run program or managed by private funding.We have observed, sampled, measured, and analyzed the occurrences, distribution, physical properties, and microbiological environments at a selected flat topped seamount named Takuyo No.5 as a model area for scientific study of ferromanganese crusts within the Japanese EEZ. We then characterized crust structures, composition, age, and growth history, resulting in an understanding of the overall nature and distribution of these deposits from wide range of areas, water depths and geological environments. The study started with a ROV (Hyper-Dolphin 3K of JAMSTEC) exploration jointly with universities and national institutions (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan Oil, Gas, and Metal Exploration Corporation, and Geological Survey of Japan) in 2009 using marine geology vessels, remotely-operated vehicle, an oceanbottom drill machine, deep-tow TV camera, as well as conventional dredges and corers. We have been studying the topography, geology, nature of the bottom material of the seamounts using delicate sampling devices and measurement tools, and characterized the distribution patterns of the metal-rich ferromanganese deposits from chemical, mineralogical, and microbiological points of view."

The La Colosa, Colombia porphyry gold deposit is currently in the pre-feasibility stage. This large deposit has many types of gold mineralization: native gold, electrum, and tellurides. These variations in the gold mineralization lead to variability in the gold recovery. The final process flowsheet may include gravity concentration with cyanide leaching. Metallurgical testwork is utilized to identify the zones of ore that may be problematic to recover. To help select the samples that represent the fluctuating variability zones, geometallurgical models are constructed using mineralogy and geology data. These zones are then wireframed and compared to the geological and structural models for spatial correlation. Samples for the variability testwork will be selected from these different zones to identify and analyse the effect the different gold mineralization types have on the recovery. By using geometallurgy to aid in the sample selection for metallurgical testwork, the variability in the ore body can be understood and constrained to aid in process optimization.

Universities are not immune from the large number of retirements facing the mining industry. Department heads anticipate that we will need to replace all of the senior mining engineering faculty in the U.S. by 2020. Long term studies of Ph.D. completion times and success rates indicate that in Engineering disciplines in the U.S., the ten year completion rate is 65% at best and the four year completion rate is less than 8%. We do not have accurate data on completion rates and times for mining or metallurgical engineering Ph.D. students in the U.S. but students self-report their expected completion times are around 4 years. National data on doctoral students indicate that younger, full time students with sufficient financial support have a higher probability of success in completing their degrees in a timely manner. Students in Eastern U.S. mining engineering programs are on average 32 years old, 85% are full time, and the gap between support and cost of attendance is $5,000 per year. Students in Western U.S. programs are on average 38 years old, 78% are full time, and the financial gap is $8,483. Further, it appears that domestic graduate students are not very geographically mobile. The current demand for new faculty is higher in Western programs but the longer term retirements are higher in Eastern programs. While all Ph.D. students who responded to the 2010 survey indicated an interest in a faculty position at some point in their careers, very few were applying for the open positions. Over the past 35 years for which data could be obtained, the maximum number of Ph.D. students enrolled in mining engineering in the U.S. is 115 with a maximum of 27 degrees granted in one year. On average 89 students are enrolled in doctoral programs in mining engineering in the U.S. with average degree production of 15 Ph.D.s per year.

In recent years, tellurium has been extensively used in the manufacture of semiconductor materials. For this type of application, high-purity tellurium is required. Selenium, lead and silicon are usually the main impurities in tellurium. During the electrolytic refining of copper, tellurium gold and silver are collected in the anode slimes. A pyrometallurgical treatment is used to recover gold and silver from the decopperized anode slimes whereas tellurium is oxidized and skimmed off from the refining furnace as a Na2CO3-based slag. In the slag, tellurium is present as sodium tellurite (Na2TeO3), which is further water-leached from the slag. The first step in the conventional process for tellurium recovery consists of the precipitation of the tellurium contained in the leaching solution as tellurium dioxide (TeO2). The solid TeO2 is then dissolved under acidic conditions for its further reduction with sulfur dioxide gas (SO2). In this paper, an alternative route for tellurium production is presented in which a sodium tellurate [Na2TeO4] intermediate is obtained by oxidation of the sodium tellurite in an alkaline solution following the water leaching step. Sodium tellurate is then dissolved in acid media and high-purity tellurium is obtained by reduction with SO2 gas. Experimental tests under laboratory conditions indicate that the novel process yields higher precipitation selectivity for tellurium than the conventional process. A comparison of its efficiency concerning impurities co-precipitation with respect to the conventional process is discussed.

The kinetics on the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied by use of series piezoelectric quartz crystal ( SPQC ). Arsenic ioninhibits the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, which is consistent with the previous results by other measuring method. This further demonstrates that the SPQC can monitor the chemical activity of the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Cupric ion accelerates the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The mechanism was discussed, it was considered that copper promotes the protein enzyme of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, rustic yanin, to form over the range of cupric ion concentration studied. There action order of cupric ion in accelerating the bacterial growth is 0.067. The growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is dependent on temperature, the apparent reaction activation energy decreases from25.56 kJ / mol to 18.32 kJ / mol because of the addition of 10 mg / L Cu(II) to the bacterial growth solution of pH 2.0 at initial inoculum of 10%.

The ability to detect and quantify ground movements in underground mine workings is of the utmost importance to the safety of miners and continuity of operations. Rib sloughage is one of the most common forms of underground deformations. Remote sensing techniques, such as laser scanning, can be used to quantify this rib sloughage, by recording precise, time-lapse point clouds of mine workings. In order to determine sloughage volumes and locations, a total of 11 laser scans were performed 41 days apart at a working section of an underground limestone mine. During this period, significant sloughing and scaling occurred, allowing for differentiation between the initial and final point clouds.
