This paper describes and sets in context the commercially proven uranium extraction processes. It also discusses some of the technologies that are currently being pursued with the aim of reducing costs and overcoming a number of technical issues that are faced by process designers and operators. In doing so, opportunities for the transfer of extraction technology from other industries/commodities are identified. The key processing areas that are examined include: ?The influence of mineralogy. The type of uranium mineralization and the nature of its association within a particular deposit will have a major impact on process route selection. Uranium minerals are classified according to their influence on extractive metallurgy. As the uranium price has risen in recent times, so opportunities are increasing for the recovery of uranium from less conventional resources such as phosphates and fossil fuels. ?The opportunities for employing techniques aimed at reducing the capital and operating costs of the overall process such as heap leach and beneficiation. Preconcentration by screening, gravity separation and radiometric sorting can potentially reduce the mass flow to the downstream leach and recovery plants. ?Purification or separation of uranium in carbonate systems. While it is possible to directly precipitate uranium from clarified leachate, the presence of impurities such as vanadium, molybdenum and others may dictate that ion exchange or selective precipitation is employed. Advances have been made in other industries in terms of improved ion exchange equipment aimed at reducing resin inventories and hence costs. ?Separation in acid leach systems. Earlier developments included the use of combined SX-IX systems (Eluex or Bufflex) and the introduction of continuous countercurrention exchange (CCIX). Column SX has found a ready application to uranium in view of the rapid extraction kinetics. With the renewed interest in uranium processing, efforts are being redirected towards further development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) as a means of driving down capital and operating costs. ?Extraction in a chloride environment. Australia and Namibia are desert countries where good quality water comes at a cost. However, both have access to saline water from either the ocean or subterranean aquifers. The issues associated with operating a uranium extraction operation in such environments is discussed. ?Extraction from less conventional sources. Recent price increases for U3O8 have resulted in a number of companies examining the recovery of uranium from sources such as fossil fuels and phosphate deposits. Both of these areas were examined in the 1970s and 1980s and a number of approaches were commercialized. The paper reviews the extraction options.

Electrical tomography has developed rapidly over the last few years in its sophistication and practical use to enable three-dimensional information on the distribution of phases within flowing mixtures to be observed1. This paper reviews the current state of application from the industrial perspective, drawing on applications case studies based on scaling studies in the laboratory right through to installations on plant. In the laboratory, applications have looked at scale-up of mixing2 processes involving gas-liquid and solid-liquid suspensions3 with a particular interest in verifying computational fluid dynamics simulations or in checking scale-up design4,5. In the processing plant, the circumstances are usually bespoke and may range from simple detection of the degree of homogeneity of a flowing mixture through to the need to measurement a sophisticated batch process such as crystallization, sedimentation, filtering and drying. Examples drawn from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries will be presented and related to the benefits that can be gained through application of the method.

In May of 1980, a mine operated by Belmoral Mines Ltd experienced a failed crown pillar, resulting in the death of eight miners and putting sixteen others in harm?s way. The Ferderber mine was located in the Val d?Or region of the province of Quebec in Canada, and had been under development for 19 months and production for 9 months, since the opening of the portal. The crown pillar separating the 1?7 level from overlying overburden ultimately failed, permitting an estimated 1.5 million cubic feet of liquefied sediment to gain entry into the mine. This paper back-analyses the cave-in by applying decision error theory, in an examination of the organizational culture and the collective decisions contributing to the cave-in disaster. A case will be made for a greater understanding of mining methodology, geomechanics and risk assessment when operating in such challenging geologic conditions. Boundary condition and decision (BCD) analysis will be introduced as an innovative new method for the analysis of mine accidents and incidents. It will also be shown that BCD analysis can be applied to any event in an enterprise for which standards, norms or legislation exists. A cognitive profile will be presented that provides insight into the safety ethos existing within the Ferderber mine organization at the time of the tragedy.

The challenges of noise emission in the mining industry are well known. These challenges are exacerbated by the increasing trend towards mechanized mining, and there is general consensus that an effective industry-wide Buy Quiet initiative (BQI) will significantly assist in reducing noise-induced hearing loss by minimizing noise at its source. In its endeavours to improve the health of workers, the MOSH Noise Team has facilitated development of a proposed strategy and structure for a BQI. Extensive consultation with stakeholders resulted in support for the initiative. The MOSH Noise Team was advised to solicit the contributions of consulting mechanical and electrical engineers (CM&EEs), whose support is viewed as critical for realization of the initiative, since elimination of noise at source is an engineering challenge, and most procurement standards and specifications are set and managed by engineers. A workshop with CM&EEs and their representatives, as well as group environmental engineers (GEEs), confirmed the urgent need for the initiative and provided valuable insights. The workshop used obstacle based planning techniques to identify the factors on which the success of this BQI will depend. Most potential obstacles to the implementation revolved around proper scoping, leadership commitment, and companies? adherence to the initiative. Lack of involvement by the relevant stakeholders and economic issues were also identified as potential obstacles. Delegates at the workshop felt that the successful implementation of the industry-wide BQI, will depend on the mining industry addressing the specific obstacles. The most critical and urgent issue was identified as the formation of a properly constituted industry-wide BQI task team that includes representatives from critical stakeholder groups and which is mandated and empowered to drive the initiative.

The ability to perform three dimensional imaging at micron-scale resolution of real mineral floc sediments and structures using commercially available Micro X-ray Tomography (XMT) instrumentation can be used for the analysis of aggregates and granules, liberation and dewatering of sediments. This paper presents are view of recent work by the authors relevant to the mining and minerals industries. It covers three main topics: X-ray imaging of agglomerates and multi-component mineralic particles,, permeability of sediments, and dissolution of granules with potential application to heap leaching.

This paper reviews the development and suitability of various important thermophysical and electrical properties with respect to base metal mattes. Areas of focus include the critical validation of measurements of viscosity, density, surface and interfacial tension, electrical conductivity, and an overview of the various experimental methods used to determine these properties. Accurate physical property data of mattes are critical in process modelling and computational fluid dynamic modelling of smelting and converting operations employed in the extraction of copper, nickel, cobalt and platinum group metals.

The ability of soils to retain and hold cations is called the cation exchange capacity (CEC). Adsorbed cations, however, can be replaced by other cations through the process of cation exchange. Heavy mineral deposits contain a significant portion of slimes including the very fine clay minerals. In most circuits the slimes fraction hampers efficiency and has to be removed during early stages of the process. Being a nonvaluable process stream, the processing of the slimes is a costly exercise. In thickening applications it might be possible to manipulate the ability of clay minerals to retain and hold positively charged cations in order to optimize flocculation and therefore reduce flocculation costs. The CEC value of the slimes could be a measure of this possibility. To investigate this hypothesis, different slimes samples were characterized for size, chemical composition and clay minerals present. The CEC value of each sample was determined and explained in terms of the mineral phases present. Settling tests were conducted and an attempt was made to explain the CEC characteristics of the clay minerals in terms of settling rate. The scope of this investigation was to test the hypothesis and should not be seen as an in-depth study of the subject matter. A greater number of samples and detailed analyses to identify and quantify minerals and phases present would be required to investigate further the relationships between clay minerals in the deposit, CEC and settling rates. Location and geological setting Exxaro KZN Sands is mining a heavy minerals deposit at Hillendale mine located at Richards Bay, South Africa. The orebody consist of a dune some 8 km inland from the coast to the north of eSikhawini. A geological synopsis undertaken by Botha1 concluded that the Hillendale mining area represents a coastal dune sequence that accumulated north of the Tugela River. The northward movement of sediment by long shore drift currents result in a high sand budget on the beaches north of the river youth and is the dominant contributing factor to the accretion of the coastline and development of parallel dune systems along the coastal zone in this area. Beach swash zone processes and enrichment of the fine sand fraction occurs during wind transport off the beach by ascending parabolic dunes that form the coastal barrier dunes. This process results in heavy mineral concentration on the windward dune face and localized enrichment parallel to the dune forms. The aeolian sedimentary facies processes result in the primary concentration of higher grades in the upper silt-enriched reddish brown horizons of the profile. The synopsis by Botha1 further showed that an additional component of heavy mineral concentration can be ascribed to the post-depositional relative enrichment of heavy minerals due to weathering. Therefore, it is likely that the Hillendale orebody protolith was pedogenically weathered to form the homogeneous, silt-enriched, clayey reddish brown to dark red, palaeosol profile that grades downwards into yellowish brown, less clay-enriched sand. Slimes characterization Samples The Hillendale orebody was divided into geochemically discretized zones based on the concentration of ilmenite and other specific minerals and/or phases. Six composite samples were made up from exploration samples taken from Zone 9, Zone 11 and Zone 12. The red and orange horizons within these composite samples were separated and test samples were prepared to conduct test work and analyses. The test samples were submitted for preparation and analysis to characterize the slimes properties. Each test sample was deslimed at 45 µm representing the slimes fraction (-45 µm) and dried at 40°C. The -45 µm slimes samples were then split to conduct size analysis, chemical analysis, XRD and to determine the CEC. Size analysis The size distribution of the composite samples is shown in Table I. The size analysis shows that there is a difference in size distribution between the orange and red horizons of each zone. The orange horizons contain less 850 µ material as well as less slimes (-45 µm). The red horizons contain yore slimes (-45 µm). The size distribution of the slimes fraction (-45 µm) was determined using Malvern size analysis. The cumulative particle size distribution of the slimes is shown in Figure 1. The red horizons of the different zones show similar size distributions. The orange horizons show some differences. However, there is a difference in size distributions between the red and orange horizons.

The management of unpaved mine road networks on large surface mines rarely results in optimal road maintenance strategies and minimised total road-user costs. This is ascribed mostly to the complex and dynamic combination of variable road networks and loading and discharge points. In a dynamic mining environment - typically those mines in which production is managed by a centralised truck dispatch system ? there is no guarantee that a particular road maintenance intervention will contribute significantly to reducing total road-user costs or increasing productivity. Most large surface mines operating ultra-heavy mine trucks rely on an integrated on-board diagnostic data collation, communication and GPS-asset location system as a real-time fleet management tool. By extending this system to incorporate a multi-sensor analytical procedure in which specific truck vital signs are monitored and filtered, a road defect can be recognised and a trigger level set to relay the location of defects on the mine haul road to the centralised truck data management system. Previous work established the feasibility of the multi-sensor approach to road defect recognition on large mine haul trucks, and outlined the defect recognition, analytical and modelling issues and system limitations. This paper presents the development of the analytical procedure used as a basis for evaluating the truck on-board data to establish maintenance priorities amongst a network of mine roads. Following an introduction to the system architecture, the results of system field trials are analysed and the results discussed in the light of defect density and traffic volume as the primary variables in an approach to prioritising road maintenance. The paper concludes that by supplementing the existing mine communication and asset management systems, road maintenance can be managed on a near real-time basis and maintenance equipment dispatched to where most immediate benefit will realised from a maintenance intervention on the network, thereby generating the maximum improvement in service and reduction in cost per ton hauled.

Tarkwa Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ghana, IAMGOLD and the Government of the Republic of Ghana in a 71%, 19% and 10% ratio. The mine is operated by Gold Fields Ghana. This large, low-grade, open pit, gold mining operation is located in Tarkwa, in the Western Region of Ghana, approximately 320 kilometres by road, west of Accra, the capital of Ghana, West Africa. In the Financial year ended June 2007, the operation mined a total of 108 million tonnes of which 22 million tonnes was ore. The mined ore is processed through three gyratory crushers supplying two heap leach pads (North and South) and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. Before the 6 Sigma project commenced, the current fragmentation was resulting in sub-optimal feed size to these crushers. It was decided to use 6 Sigma methodology to improve the fragmentation. A defect was defined as a fragmentation analysis indicating less than 95% passing 750 mm. The objective was to improve fragmentation in order to achieve a constant throughput to the north heap leach crusher of 1500 t/hr, a 5% increase in pit loading efficiency and a 50% decrease in rock breaker hours, equipment damage costs and in-pit sheeting costs respectively. However, this was not to be achieved at the expense of grade control as Tarkwa is exploiting a low grade, high volume deposit and therefore ore dilution must be kept to a minimum. This paper is intended to take the reader through the various 6 Sigma phases of the project (Define ? Measure ? Analyse ? Improve ? Control) which have resulted in a 10% reduction in loading times, of which half has been attributed to improved fragmentation, as well as a substantial increase in blasted stocks. The focus has been on both drilling and blasting parameters as both processes had to be taken into account. These parameters are technical but personnel factors were also identified and dealt with as they arose. In order to measure the impact of any change in the process parameters on the fragmentation size distribution, cameras have been acquired. One has been installed looking into the bowl of the north crusher and the other one was dedicated to field observation, of individual blasts. Both are used for on-going fragmentation analysis. At Tarkwa, mining efficiency is strongly dependent on good fragmentation as well as the presence of un-blasted ?toes? on the pit floors. Crusher throughput depends on an acceptable ore fragment size. Compliance to plan with regards to actual hole depths was temporarily monitored by manual hole dipping, but, this is now being replaced with a fully automated Drill Data Management system developed by Sandvik and Modular Mining. The Six Sigma methodologies, using control charts based on data collected in the field, allowed the mine to improve methods with regards to the control of blasted material. It also enforced the implementation of a quality control programme encompassing the entire Drill and Blast process.

Definition of mineral resources and reserves forms the basis for effective mine planning and reliable public reporting of mineral assets. Historically, the mineral resource and reserves declaration process has been the domain of the geology and surveying disciplines, with the declaration of the reserves by the surveyor being based on the application of modifying factors to the declared resources available for mining. As part of an ongoing process to improve efficiency, reliability, and reproducibility of results, this approach has been revised and enhanced through the introduction of a revised process and reconciliation tools. The revised approach to reserve definition is based on the definition of scheduled resources, at an appropriate confidence estimate in the context of an approved business plan, over the anticipated life of the mineral asset being applied to define reserves. This planning and scheduling is developed, during the annual business planning process, by the mine planning department using tools such as CADSMine?. The scheduled area together with the application of revised modifying factors is tabulated in the BME (basic mine equation) and reflects the mine production plan over time. Simplification of the modifying factors to dilution and losses underpins the simple yet robust approach to improved definition of reserves in this process and in the basic resource to reserve equation (BR2RE). Dilution intrinsically affects grade but not metal content, whereas the losses reflect both the efficiency of mining and planning and are reflected in metal losses, area losses, or both. Reconciliation of the derived 'resource converted to reserve' area (which is based on the business plan from CADSMine?) versus the 'resource available for mining' (which is derived from Datamine?) underpins the robustness and auditability of the reserves declaration. This R&R accounting and reconciliation approach is transparent and facilitates interrogation of the logic and rationale of long-term business planning and project strategy. These numbers are processed and reported in the logic of the basic resource equation (BRE), which also addresses aspects such as white areas (future and historic), tail management, and partial extraction (non-scheduled pillars, etc.) in compliance with SAMREC definitions. Areas that do not have the necessary confidence and data support to be declared as resources find their space as pre-resource (outside the domain of public reporting), outlining existing potential for future extraction and reporting. Use of the BRE leads ultimately to a complete, refined accounting and reconciliation-oriented approach for all production entities. The revised resource and reserve process includes the discipline of mine planning as intrinsic to the definition and declaration of resources and reserves. Subsequent to the change in process, the resources and reserves have truly become the domain of the mineral resource management discipline. This paper defines the logic of the basic resource equations and outlines their application in the definition and reconciliation of mineral resources and reserves at Anglo American Platinum Limited.

Heavy mineral deposits often contain relatively high levels of radioactive elements (thorium and uranium in particular).It is difficult to obtain clean separation of ilmenite and monazite (the main impurity mineral containing radioactive elements), and physical intergrowths of the two minerals are, in fact, not uncommon. As a result, ilmenite concentrates obtained from such deposits often contain high levels of thorium and uranium. Because of the large negative free energies of formation of ThO2and U3O8boththorium and uranium report to the slag during smelting and if an ilmenite concentrate contaminated with monazite is used to make high titania slag, the concentrations of these elements in the slag end up about 40% higher than in the ilmenite feed. Previous work, patented by RGC Mineral Sands Limited, and subsequently confirmed by Mintek, showed that radioactivity may be reduced by roasting an ilmenite concentrate with borax at 1000°C to 1100°C and leaching it with hydrochloric acid1. It is evident that the cost of an ilmenite roast/leach process will be high and there may be economic benefits in removing the radioactive elements from the slag instead (the volume of slag to be treated is smaller than the volume of ilmenite feed). To remove radioactive elements from the slag it is necessary to know how these elements occur in the slag. Inother words, the distribution of uranium and thorium between the various oxide, silicate and metallic phases in high titania slag must be determined. Once the deportment of thorium and uranium between the various phases ha sbeen determined, an appropriate process for slag purification can be developed. Test samples High-titania slag was prepared in a pilot-scale DC furnace from ilmenite concentrates with different levels of uranium and thorium. Subsequently, ten slag samples representing a range of compositions were selected for bulk chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro-analysis. The samples were crushed to a maximum particle size of 1 mm and from each sample a 20-kg batch was riffled out for analysis. Bulk chemical composition Chemical compositions of the samples selected for test work are given in Table I. TiO2, Al2O3, SiO2, MgO, MnO, FeO and V2O5were analysed by ICP-OES, Na2O, CaO andCr2O3by atomic absorption spectroscopy and U and Th by XRF (the XRF detection limit for U and Th was around 4 ppm). The ?B? series has a higher silica content than the others as a result of small silica additions that were made during smelting. All samples have elevated alumina levels as a result of furnace refractory contamination during smelting. As expected, there is an inverse relationship between the concentrations of TiO2and FeO in the samples (Figure 1).The TiO2and FeO levels are similar to the levels found in industrial slags2. Extreme conditions of reduction under which reduction of more ?refractory? oxides (e.g., chromia, magnesia, silica, alumina and even urania and thoria) might take place were not explored in the study. Note that BB1and BBB1 contain more than 7% combined silica and alumina (SiO2as a flux addition during smelting, and Al2O3from refractory contamination) and they do not fall on the general trend defined by the other samples. The U and Th concentrations of sample E2 is noteworthy. In the preparation of slag E2, monazite concentrate was added to the ilmenite to increase the concentrations of radioactive elements in the slag. This was done primarily to facilitate the detection of Th and U during the phase chemical characterization of the slag. Diamondiferous linear beaches in Mining Area No. 1 have been the mainstay of Namdeb?s diamond production for more than 80 years. Most of the onshore beaches have been mined out, but in recent years mining has been extended offshore into the surf zone through a process of beach accretion. A total of 61.6 million carats has been produced from the gravel beaches since their discovery in 1928, and Mining Area No. 1 is considered to have great remaining potential from areas currently submerged under water. To date, the surf zone has remained largely unexplored due to the consistently strong winds, currents, and large waves which make access to this area extremely difficult. This paper describes the processes used in developing a practical methodology for exploration of the surf zone in a domain extending approximately 22 km long in a northwest?southeast direction and 0.3 km wide in a perpendicular direction adjacent to the current Mining Area No 1. The vigorous surf zone poses multiple technical challenges in terms of obtaining geological and diamond information. In order to access the area for sampling, a jack-up walking probe drill platform (PDP) with a 5-inch diameter reverse-circulation drill has been developed to carry out exploration drilling in the dynamic surf zone. The hydraulically driven platform has eight legs, each of which is 18 m long. Four of the legs are in fixed positions on the fore and aft sides of the platform. The other four moveable legs are fitted to sliding frames attached to the port and starboard sides of the platform. The sets of fixed and moveable legs can be raised and lowered by hydraulically powered jacking stations. By alternately lifting and lowering the sets of fixed and moveable legs in conjunction with the frames moving back and forth horizontally, a walking action is performed by the PDP. The platform can walk at a speed of 10?15 m/h, depending on weather and footwall conditions. Optimization of sampling for diamondiferous gravel occurrence in Mining Area No.1 was undertaken through creation of a virtual orebody on which different sample configurations were tested. The input data for the construction of a virtual orebody comprises a set of drilling data, collected from recently accreted areas directly adjacent to the 22 km × 0.3 km target domain. The input drilling data covers only 34% of the domain, and for the purpose of this study, a single realization is deemed to be sufficient. The texture obtained from using only the drilling data to construct a simulation did not make geological sense; hence it was necessary to make use of analog data in order to improve the simulation. The first analog data used consists of the gully patterns found in the metasedimentary Precambrian bedrock footwall. Gullies are, in general, gravel filled and it is fair to assume that gully patterns form a subset of the total gravel occurrence. Total gravel occurrence includes marine terraces (governed by sealevel stands) above bedrock peaks, together with gravel within gullies below bedrock peaks. The second analog ?data? introduced is through the use of ?expert interpretation?. The indicator drilling data is interpreted by expert opinion and the 2-dimensional result is hand-sketched, digitized, and then pixelated. The pixelated data set is then used as input for variogram calculation. This study cannot provide a single definite optimization result as the nature of the data does not permit this. The use of different validation approaches (conditioning data, where available; expert interpretation; and gully pattern data), however, can give a very good indication of how to balance sampling effort with de-risking aspects related to geological continuity. Work undertaken by sampling the simulation will give an assessment of the relative probabilities of determining gravel occurrence in the study area. This study showed that a 50 m × 400 m cross-configuration will be a good initial sample spacing for highlighting areas where gravel may be absent, and further infill drilling may be required. The relative efficiency of a 50 m × 400 m cross off-set sampling configuration has been demonstrated using a trumpet curve versus sampling effort when using kriging as the estimation method. "Fragment size distributions play an important part in the design and planning of block cave mining operations. Though several methods have been proposed for estimating fragment size distributions in advance of mining, the calibration of these estimating procedures to field measurements has been a challenge. The Block Size Estimator (BSE) program was developed for providing an assessment of primary fragmentation expected in a block cave mine using drill-core piece length data and joint characteristics from the exploration and geotechnical evaluation programmes. In order to validate the results from the BSE program, the drill-core piece length data and the joint characteristics in different rock types from the DOZ block cave mine in Indonesia were used to help generate fragment size distributions in different areas of the mine. The predicted fragment size distributions were compared with the fragmentation observed at the drawpoints during operation of the mine.This paper presents the details of the validation of the fragment size estimates by the BSE program using fragment size distribution data from the drawpoints at the extraction level at the DOZ block cave mine, and the challenges encountered in developing reasonable correlations between the estimated and measured fragment size distributions. IntroductionThe assessment of fragmentation is an important aspect of the design and planning of the block cave mining method, and forms an integral part of the design of the excavations at the extraction level and the selection of material handling systems for transporting the ore to the processing stations. Secondary blasting requirements can also be estimated based on the fragment size distributions developed for the block cave (Laubscher, 1994).Several methods of estimating fragment size distributions in block cave mines have been developed based on joint set parameters estimated from structural data from oriented core drilling campaigns and mapping of available excavations and outcrops. The BCF program (Esterhuizen, 1999) estimates the fragmentation using a combination of empirical, analytical, and rational methods to model the behaviour of materials during the primary and secondary fragmentation processes. The program JKFrag uses advanced tessellation of joint traces to create rock blocks and then generate fragment size distributions (Brown, 2002). Nickson, Coulson and Hussey (2000) presented the details of processing of the geotechnical data from the Mont Porphyre project, including an assessment of block sizes from the data collected on the core logging sheet. The distance between natural fractures was used to create distributions of block lengths, and a distribution of potential block sizes was estimated assuming that the blocks had equal dimensions in all directions. The results agreed closely with the results of the BCF program. Hadjigeorgiou, Grennon, and Nickson (2002) demonstrated the use of oriented borehole data to provide characteristic block size distributions for a mining project using a software package called Stereoblock, which generates a three-dimensional joint network for a given volume and calculates the volumes of blocks created by the intersections of these joints, simulated as circular planes. The distributions of joint orientation and joint spacing generated from statistical analysis of the oriented core data are used for the creation of the Stereoblock model. The diameter of the circular planes representing the joints is determined based on the mean and standard deviation of the joint trace length obtained from scan-line mapping."

"The complete and successful closure of a mine in the South African environment remains problematic. Closure remains an elusive mining phase due to unclear roles and responsibilities, inaccurate closure management data, and the inability of stakeholders to conceptualize and integrate closure information into business processes. Currently there are no proven methods available to address the complexities encountered during a closure application, and to date no mine has been granted full closure. Many mines are left abandoned and unrehabilitated, resulting in risk to investors, surrounding communities, and regulators. This investigation aimed to determine, categorize, and rank reasons for unsuccessful mine closures. Focus groups consisting of public and private stakeholders were identified and surveyed through a structured, rank-order questionnaire to determine the relative importance of reasons why achieving formal and final mine closure remains elusive. Various requirements and aspects were identified and listed according to four categories: namely, primary, secondary, process drivers, and information sources. These aspects should be considered in the development of an integrated mine closure model.Background and rationalePrior to 1956, mine closures were not subject to legislative requirements, being merely governed by insufficient environmental regulations under the Mines and Works Act 27 (MWA) (Swart, 2003). In 1981 the Chamber of Mines (COM) published a document titled ‘The rehabilitation of land disturbed by surface coal mining’, which constituted the first notable contribution to environmental protection. This guideline was later referenced in the Minerals Act of 1991, which for the first time laid definite environmental burdens on the Mining Right Holder (MRH). The Minerals Act of 1991 was superseded by the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act Regulations (MPRDAR), which specify a regulatory process for mine closure applications and financial provisions."

"Engineering studies by Selection Trust, Limited, initially in connection with the development of a copper and nickel deposit for Bamangwato Concessions, Limited, and subsequently for several other clients, have required a large number of metallurgical design calculations. The flash smelting process, developed by Outokumpu Oy in Finland, has been selected as the most suitable method for these projects and the computer programs described in this paper have been developed to facilitate the computation.The data required by the programs arc the chemical and mineralogical analyses of the concentrate, gangue and flux materials and the specification of possible fuels. The required grade of furnace matte is set as the main design parameter and the programs calculate detailed heat and material balances for the smelting process."

The microbial leaching of metal sulfides is now an established biotechnological technology. Over the past 25 years, refinements in the engineering design of bioleaching processes have paralleled advances in our understanding of the diversity and role of the micro-organisms driving the process and the mechanisms by which micro-organisms enhance metal sulfide oxidation. Commercial success started with the treatment of refractory gold concentrates using mesophilic micro-organisms, followed by the development of tank bioleaching processes for the treatment of base metal concentrates. This was, initially, a mesophilic process with limited potential for recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates due to slow rates and low copper extractions. The exploitation of thermophiles represents a major breakthrough in the development of bioleaching technology for the treatment of chalcopyrite-containing ores and concentrates. This development also opened the route to heap bioleaching of chalcopyrite ores, which is now a major focus of research programmes and piloting campaigns. This paper reviews the historical development of minerals bioleaching processes and gives an update on the current status of commercial tank and heap bioleach operations around the world.

This paper will review some methods used to manage geotechnical risk at Damang Pit Cutback. The pit depth is designed up to 250m with push back on the eastern and western walls of the existed and depleted Railway Cutback (RCB) pit. The geotechnical design was presented by SRK Perth, focussing on the optimisation of the bench face angle which finally evolved with ?steep slope strategy?; 24m at 800 and 24m at 750 on the eastern and western walls respectively. The east wall was designed strategically to optimise the proximity of the tailings dam to the final pit crest of the push back. The pit has experienced failure in the weathered profile transgressing through the transitional material into the fresh rock at different location of the east wall since development in July 2005. To ensure stability and to minimise ore loss, the east wall has been redesigned using 700 batter angles and reduced berm width of 4m compared to 800 and 8.5 berm width of 24m bench height. The paper will also discuss how slope failures to the east wall had been sustained, managed and monitored to enhance production. Emphasis is placed on slope management at Damang which includes the principles of wall control blast, visual inspection, slope depressurisation and the state-of-the art of slope monitoring using Autoslope automated prism monitoring. Future slope monitoring is considering the use of 3D Laser and Radar to provide early warning so that evacuation could be effected. The intension is to provide mine personnel the means to identify risk areas during mining activities.

The new sorting system has been developed to achieve efficient separation at low mineral content levels. The system employs high resolution X-ray sensors providing multi-energy analysis, thus giving maximal information about processed materials measurable by X-ray radiography. It makes it possible to analyse the internal structure of the particles and directly detect inclusion of minerals and metals like copper or gold. The paper describes sorting application examples for zinc, lead, copper and gold ore with low metal content below 0.1% of Cu. The sorting system still allows high efficiency analysis, quantification and removal of rock particles representing waste fraction with no metal or a negligible amount being uneconomic to process. This brings a huge advantage during pre-concentration, where almost no losses of valuable minerals in the waste fraction can be achieved. Splaine, in opening the discussion on Mr Perlman's paper, asked whether the model, as fitted by data up to 1963, predicted the rise in the price of copper in 1967, and whether the model could be used to capitalize on short-term price fluctuations.Answering the second question first, Mr Perlman said that the horizon used is six months to one year. In the very short term the activities of speculators obscured the effect of the fundamental econometric variables. This effect, however, was removed if one moved to a longer term, say, quarterly. In 1963 the model had predicted a price rise in 1964 and 1965 and a drop in price in 1966. The rise in 1967 had been caused by a strike, and imponderables such as large strikes were difficult to include in the model since they were unpredictable. Model simulation can be used to show the effect of strikes on price and the effect of small strikes is small.Mr B. R. van Rooyen said that because models are both calibrated and tested on historical data a bias was introduced which gave rise to an overoptimistic estimate of the accuracy of the forecasts. To this Mr Perlman replied that there seemed to be no alternative to the use of historical data for calibrating and testing models, and thus little hope of avoiding the bias. A second point made by Mr. van Rooyen was that manage¬ment tended to be suspicious of complex models and that frequently more heuristic models were sufficiently accurate and preferable for investment decisions. He added that if management were not involved in the model building the econometrician might easily go astray, Mr Perlman replied that symbiosis between data analysts and users of the model was essential and that the experience of the practitioner must be reflected in the model.Mr M. R. Fuller-Good remarked that a clear understanding of future price trends was essential for effective capital planning, and asked, first, how one went from the compiled data on supply and demand to the determination of their effect on price, record, whether necessary data, for example, capacities, could be obtained timeously, and, third, when strikes restricted supply, whether stockpiling by consumers induced large price fluctuations."

MunroPapers:Corporate exploration strategies by MacKenzie, B.W.The Engel Simulator and the search for uranium by Griffiths, J.C. and Singer, D.A.The Chairman opened the session by tracing the changes which have taken place in the exploration field since the days of the lone prospector who relied upon his individual skills and to a large extent on luck. The deposits which now remain to be discovered are better covered and are of lower grade. A much greater team effort, involving geoscientists and engineers, is required. The gamble is thus much greater -not only are the probabilities of failure still significant but the consequences are more severe. A recent Canadian survey indicated that expenditures of between two and nine million dollars on regional exploration programs are required to locate one significant deposit.The Chairman went on to say that these facts have led companies to regard exploration as another form of investment and to treat it accordingly. This had placed exploration in the context of corporate strategics and structures, which was the subject of the first paper of the session.In introducing his paper, Dr B. W. MacKenzie said that the paper suggested a decision framework for exploration planning. Initially the environment is analyzed to define observable and relevant economic characteristics. The terms of reference for exploration planning and the appropriate allocation of capital and skills are then established in the light of corporate objectives and growth alternatives. With the aid of this information and in the light of profit and corporate risk criteria, exploration strategies can be selected.Dr MacKenzie went on to say that the usefulness of the concept and criteria outlined in his paper depended critically upon three characteristics of any particular economic environment, namely, the return resulting from an economic discovery, the unit discovery Cost and the probability of making an economic discovery. He then showed by means of a case history relative to the Canadian Shield and Cordilleran areas that these three characteristics could, in fact, be evaluated for regions with reasonable histories of mineral activity.The first contributor to the discussion of the paper, Mr Alfred Weiss, mentioned that his group had been involved in exploration modelling for some ten years and were thus particularly interested in the paper. He went on to say that they had experienced greatest difficulty with reconnaissance programs and that he sensed that these difficulties were also present with the methodology which had been outlined. Mr Weiss asked Dr MacKenzie how he would deal with such situations when no information was available but where there was the potential for both exploration and discovery. Dr Mackenzie agreed that the lack of information was a very severe limitation and said that at the present time his methodology probably did not provide a basis for breaking down the broad geological regions he considered into areas for further assessment."
