Coal is a complex mixture of organic and mineral constituents and is the most abundant resource of fossil energy in the world. In recent years, significant research into dry coal beneficiation has gained much attention, primarily due to the need to improve grades and reduce the environmental contaminants in coal without the use of water, and to achieve this in as cost-effective manner as possible, relative to wet beneficiation processes. This paper seeks to review the application of various electrostatic separators with their process principles, to draw comparisons between different dry beneficiation techniques with specific emphasis on the tribo-electrostatic separation method, and finally to report the results of tribo electrostatic separation conducted on various South African coals. Previous research conducted on Indian, European and American coals has indicated that this technique is likely to lead to significant economic benefit through the reduction of ash content, NOx and more specifically Sox by separating out the liberated Fe-S-bearing minerals prior to utilization. The removal of the latter suite of minerals is also likely to significantly reduce or eliminate the emissions of associated trace elements, including mercury and arsenic. The research results reported in this paper indicate that the rotary tribo-electrostatic process has the potential for significant upgrading of high ash pulverized South African coal. The impact of various operational parameters was investigated and key factors established for the optimum recovery of low ash and low sulphur fine coal.

"Understanding rock properties is of vital importance in mining and civil engineering. Rock properties are generally determined through laboratory tests, which require a large number of uniformly shaped samples and technicians who use indirect methods to determine rock properties. The texture coefficient (TC), which represents various textural parameters including the size, shape, orientation, and relative proportions of grains and the matrix, is an efficient means for indirectly evaluating the mechanical behaviour of rocks. In this study, 12 different rocks (ten granites, one diorite, and one gabbro) were collected and their engineering properties. including specific gravity, porosity, P- and S-wave velocities, Schmidt rebound hardness, uniaxial compressive strength, and elasticity modulus, were investigated. Relationships between TC and these measured properties were assessed. Statistically significant (at the 95% confidence level) correlations were found between the TC and compressive strength, elasticity modulus, sound velocity (both compression and shear waves for dry and saturated samples), but no significant correlation was found with Schmidt rebound hardness. The results suggest that it is possible to use the relationships between TC and the mechanical properties of rocks in rock classification. IntroductionIn every aspect of rock engineering, knowing rock properties is essential for determining and predicting the behaviour of rocks and rock masses. Mechanical properties of rocks are important parameters in mining, geology, and engineering, and they are affected by textural characteristics such as grain size, grain shape, cement type, degree of cementation, mineral content, and the ratio of the grain area to the matrix area. The effects of textural properties on the physical and mechanical properties of rocks have been investigated for a long time, and previous studies revealed close relationships between single parameters related to rock texture and mechanical properties of rocks (Akesson et al. 2001; Gunsallus and Kulhawy 1984; Merriam, Rieke, and Kim, 1970: Onodera and Kumara 1980; Prikryl 2006; Ulusay, Tureli, and Bider, 1994; Tugrul and Zarif 1998). Rock properties are usually determined using mechanical tests, which require uniformly shaped and relatively large samples. However, it is not always possible to obtain such samples. Furthermore, rocks with similar textural and structural properties may exhibit different mechanical behaviour. Howarth and Rowlands (1987) developed a texture coefficient (TC) that expresses all the main textural parameters of a rock in a single dimensionless quantity based primarily on statistical assessment. The TC makes it possible to understand the effects of a rock’s textural properties on its mechanical properties using thin sections instead of large, uniform samples. Ersoy and Waller (1995) investigated the relationship between strength and TC for limestone, sandstone, and siltstone; they also examined the effect of rock properties and TC on drilling performance. Ozturk, Nasuf, and Bilgin (2004) explored the relationship between rock quality and TC by evaluating the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values of limestone, basaltic andesite, and tuff. Gupta and Sharma (2012) evaluated TCs as well as the petrophysical and mechanical properties of quartzite from the lower and higher Himalayas and found a strong relationship between TC and UCS. Similarly, Ozcelik, Bayram, and Yasitli (2013) investigated the relationship between TC and various parameters in marble by applying the statistical analyses developed by Ozturk, Nasuf, and Kahraman (2014)."

"Homogeneous populations are required to perform descriptive, probabilistic, and inference statistics and to support stable, predictable mining operations. The geological and downstream processing environments are, however, highly heterogeneous. The complex nature of mining environments requires means to identify and define multipopulation environments that could affect the performance of mining value chains. A study performed at several operating mines suggests that the impact of heterogeneous or variable geological, mining, and plant processing environments on overall mining value chain performance may not be a key focus area at these operations. This was illustrated through the use of basic and spatial statistics, which included the log-probability plot, a modified range equation, and chronovariography. The findings reflect high relative variability in the geological and processing environments studied and mining operators’ inability to effectively deal with the sources and consequences of variability. The study suggests that a focus on heterogeneity in complex mining operations may significantly enhance overall mining performance. IntroductionHeterogeneity and why it mattersHeterogeneity refers to a state or quality of being variable/diverse and comprising different non-compatible elements or parts. In statistical terms a heterogeneous population can refer to a population comprising different non-compatible sub-populations or a multipopulation environment. The latter is commonly found in natural environments such as geological environments (Bardossy and Fodor, 2001). The inherent heterogeneity of complex geological environments is also referred to as spatial heterogeneity. Heterogeneity or variability, however, also occurs over time at mining operations. A case in point is variable ore composition on a conveyance system feeding a processing plant or product stockpile.Heterogeneity associated with the mining environment can significantly influence key aspects of day-to-day mining operations such as sampling, the use of descriptive, probabilistic, and inference calculations, and an operation’s ability to manage and control the mining value chain as a whole."

The presence of impurities such as Se and Te in copper sulfate leach solutions can have a detrimental effect on electrowinning efficiency. These elements can be removed from the solution by precipitation; sulfurous acid is commonly used as a precipitation reagent, while studies have also reported improved precipitation with the addition of metallic copper. This paper aimed to determine the effect of conditions used during the solution purification step on the characteristics of the precipitates that formed. Precipitation tests were performed in a batch reactor with copper sulfate leach solutions obtained from the base metal refinery of a platinum group metal producer. The effects of agitation rate (250 and 500 rpm), SO2 flow rate (4.4 and 5.8 mL/min.L), temperature (65 and 95°C) and metallic copper powder addition (0, 1 and 2 g/L) on the characteristics of the precipitates formed during the tests were determined using scanning electron microscopy. The major phases detected in the precipitates formed when using SO2 as the only precipitation reagent were elemental Se and Cu2Se. The introduction of copper powder led to the production of different sulfide phases for the experiments conducted at 65°C irrespective of the values of the other reaction parameters. At 95°C, Cu crystals, Cu2O and tiny inclusions of Cu2(Se,Te) were the prominent phases noticed in the precipitates produced from all the tests conducted with copper powder as precipitation enhancing reagent. A copper-gold project has required a number of trade-off studies underpinned by test work to settle on pragmatic flowsheets and throughputs to support a pre-feasibility study that provides a compelling financial case. The primary trade-off studies were based on the mine schedule, ore type feed-grade recovery relationships, likely concentrate grades and typical marketing terms as well as the estimated capital and operating costs for a range of throughputs and mining strategies. Secondary trade-off studies were conducted for specific circuits and additional processing options. Although the details of these studies are not presented, the technical options and subsequent flowsheets are discussed. While the flowsheets will be optimised during the feasibility study stage, the basis is now fixed for the four ore types that would be mined from the copper-gold orebody. The ore types, resulting from a strong weathering profile, exhibit a wide range of copper mineralisation and gold associations, as well as gangue types. They display a range of characteristics that necessitated a nuanced approach to flowsheet development. The primary separation techniques that have been employed include gravity, classification, flotation and leaching while a range of comminution methods have been selected to suit the properties of the ore types. While technical issues are important factors in terms of maximising the quality of separations, recoveries and revenues, attention to material handling, equipment characteristics, the mine schedule, and capital and operating costs are equally important considerations for settling upon a suitable and robust flowsheet. "Physical and numerical modelling methods were followed to identify mechanism(s) for tundish slag entrainment in a bare tundish and one with a flow control device (FCD).The physical and numerical models made use of water and paraffin to model steel and slag respectively. Observations from the physical model showed that the steel-slag interface remains immobile in both cases. Entrained paraffin formed droplets approximately 1 mm in diameter. Results from both models (numerical and physical) showed that in both cases (bare and FCD case), areas of high entrained slag concentration exist near the inlet region. The entrained slag concentration decreases towards the tundish endwalls.Flow patterns and velocities tangential to the steel-slag interface from the numerical model showed that slag entrainment in both the bare tundish and tundish with a FCD possibly takes place via two mechanisms. First, the slag moves across the steel-slag interface via mass transfer; secondly small velocities tangential to the interface at depths greater than 10 mm below the interface carry the already ‘entrained’ slag into the bulk steel phase. These tangential flow patterns are dominant in the inlet region, hence the high concentration of entrained slag in this region. IntroductionThe tundish serves as the last metallurgical vessel through which steel passes before solidifying in the moulds. It is in the tundish that the last traces of non-metallic inclusions should be removed, otherwise the inclusions carry over to the moulds and cause defects in the steel product. In the tundish, the slag is less dense than the melt and thus resides on the top of the melt. The slag provides a sink into which the non-metallic inclusions float to and dissolve. The slag also protects the melt from air and heat loss. However, when slag is entrained in the melt as a result of increased turbulence or shearing at the steel-slag interface, slag can become a source of nonmetallic inclusions.Numerous studies on flow patterns in the tundish have been carried out since the introduction of the tundish. High Voltage Pulse (HVP) technology has the potential to transform traditional mineral processing practice in the mining industry. HVP pre-treatment has been shown to enable ore preconcentration, achieve ore pre-weakening and improve mineral liberation. In order to improve the efficiencies of these novel HVP applications, it is essential to understand how HVP operational factors affect ore breakage in HVP pre-treatment. A two-level fractional factorial experiment using two rock samples, a gold-copper ore and a basalt sample, was performed to determine which factors have statistically significant influences on breakage probability, size reduction, and energy efficiency, and which factors have insignificant influences. Operational factors investigated include applied voltage, electrode gap, number of pulse discharges, the number of rocks being processed per batch, and rock size. In total, 1920 batch tests were conducted. For ore breakage characterised in terms of breakage probability and the degree of size reduction during HVP pre-treatment, the dominant factors were identified to be the number of pulse discharges, voltage, and the number of particles present in the processing zone. As all these three factors are related to the specific energy, it is concluded that the specific energy is the most important factor controlling ore breakage in HVP treatment. In terms of the efficiency by which spark energy is transferred from the generator energy, the factors found to have the most dominating influence were the particle size, the number of rock particles present in the processing zone and the voltage. Increasing the values of these factors reduced the loss of HVP energy during the energy transfer process. The factorial experiment using the two ore samples with vastly different mineralisation produced similar results. The Technical Programme Committee-Metals Technology of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, in association with its Vaal Triangle Branch, held a one-day colloquium on 18th April, 1989, the theme being 'Ferous Pyrometalurgy: A Challenge for South Africa'. The venue was the Auditorium 100 at the campus of the Vaal Triangle Technikon in Vanderbijlpark. Project and contract management A Project and Contract Management Conference is to be held on 19th and 20th September, 1989, at the C SIR, Pretoria. Powder metallurgy The PM 90 exhibition is to be held in Wembley, London, from 2nd to 6th July, 1990. The wide range of powders, processing machinery, and powder-metallurgy components at the exhibition will reflect the growth in this highly specialist industry. Castings and forgings Exhibition organizers, FMJ International Publications Ltd, are set to build upon the success of Castings & Forgings '88, which was held as a joint event with Pat- Cast '88. Traditionally, the term `total system' design applied to comminution conjures images of a design that addresses the usual business and operational drivers, including health, safety and environment (HSE), capital cost, operating cost, throughput and product size. In terms of the physical process, the mine to customer type studies also exemplifies an approach that satisfies a normal `total systems' approach. As an industry there are drivers that are forcing a re-consideration of what we regard as our total system. This modification of drivers will require changes in approach and implementation to provide the best solutions. Some of the major changes that impact the drivers are shortage of skilled personnel, changing social attitudes to remote mine site work, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), quality of available orebodies and geographical location of new mine sites. One approach to the challenges presented by the changing business environment is to expand the system envelope around comminution to ensure that comminution, in its widest sense, helps to meet the new realities. Background to the new drivers and constraints is provided and some of the appropriate responses are examined in relation to the impact on the total system.

In this study, potassium ferrocyanide, a non-toxic cyanide precursor in dark and diffuse reflection environments, was applied as a reagent for the leaching of gold. The free cyanide ions were gradually released from the potassium ferrocyanide solution under the ultraviolet light. Orthogonal leaching experiments were performed in gold ore to analyse the effect of solution pH, potassium ferrocyanide dosage, and temperature in potassium ferrocyanide solution system under UV light. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to explore the role of potassium ferrocyanide in gold leaching, Optimised results showed that the gold recovery reached 67.74% in a high-alkaline environment at a 12.6 pH, 3.8 kg/t potassium ferrocyanide dosage, 62°C, and irradiance of 10mW/cm-2. The gold leaching kinetics was monitored by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) of potassium ferrocyanide solution. The results indicate that the gold extraction process consists of two processes: adsorption and leaching, and a rigid adsorption layer formed on the reaction surface. Furthermore, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the gold sensor surface after leaching reaction showed that -C≡N appears on the gold sensor surface, and the gold is oxidised to form AuCN complexes. A willemite concentrate consisting mainly of willemite (55.3%) and dolomite (15.6%) was reduced in a tube furnace with charcoal as reductant. The effects of temperature and varying reductant additions on zinc extraction were studied. A zinc recovery of 86% was achieved with 20% reductant in the charge at 1100°C. During reduction, the calcium oxide generated through calcination of the dolomite promoted decomposition of the willemite, thus lowering the temperature at which reduction took place. The presence of CaO improved the zinc recovery at all temperatures studied. The best zinc recovery (93%) was obtained in the presence of 5% CaO, 20% charcoal reductant, and at a temperature of 1100°C. The results show that the willemite concentrate studied has great potential to be used as a raw material for the Waelz process.

"The probability of survival of coal pillars is a more rational indicator of stability than the safety factor. Over time, pillars undergo reduction in size by progressive scaling of the sidewalls. The probability of survival is therefore not constant but reduces over time. The rate of scaling can be quantified, and the reduction of the probability of survival as a function of time can therefore also be quantified. The paper describes the link between the factor of safety, probability of survival, and reduction of the probability of survival. Using the safety factor, probability of survival, and the time at which the probability of survival will reduce to 50% is proposed as a more rational method of evaluating pillar stability than the safety factor alone.IntroductionCoal pillar strength has long been the subject of research in South Africa and several other coal-producing countries. However, it began receiving serious attention only after the Coalbrook disaster in 1960. The most important outcomes of the initial investigations were the groundbreaking research by Salamon and Munro (1967) that resulted in the well-known power formula for pillar strength, and the work by Bieniawski (1969) that resulted in a linear formula for strength. The former approach was based on empirical back-analysis of failed and stable pillar cases, and the latter on in situ strength tests on large specimens.The Salamon and Munro (1967) formula has been widely used in South Africa and even adapted for application to hard rock pillars by researchers such as Hedley and Grant (1972).At the time of the initial work by Salamon and Munro, there were only 27 failed pillar cases suitable for analysis. It was not possible at the time to determine site- or seam-specific strength, and the result was a general formula for use in all seams in all mining districts. Since that time pillars have continued to fail and the database continued to grow – as of 2013, there were 85 cases in the database. Using the additional data, there have been a number of re-evaluations of the strength formula and it has also become possible to differentiate between the different mining seams and areas."

Metso Minerals Cisa have developed VisiofrothTM - a system which calculates parameters of the froth surface using vision from remote cameras mounted about individual flotation cells. The parameters calculated from this system can be utilised within process control strategies to achieve stabilisation or optimisation of the flotation process. As part of a JKMRC AMIRA P9 field campaign, froth vision was collected from various cells operated at different air rates and froth depths within Rio Tinto's Northparkes copper roughing and scavenging circuit. At the same time, samples were collected to determine the cell metallurgical performance at each operating condition. These froth images have been processed using the VisiofrothTM system with froth velocity, bubble size, froth collapse rate and various froth colour parameters calculated. These parameters have been compared to the measured concentrate flow and concentrate grade produced at each condition. This analysis shows that the concentrate tonnage flow is strongly correlated with froth velocity whereas the concentrate grade is best correlated using froth velocity in combination with a bubble stability parameter which affects the bubble size distribution on the top surface of the froth. This paper summarises the results from this analysis as well as an overview of the VisiofrothTM system and the parameters that are measured by the software.

The UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? freeze lining concept combines wall cooling with carbon and graphite refractories of higher thermal conductivities to ?chill? the refractory lining by transferring heat from the refractory lining. Effective sidewall water cooling, together with the efficiency of the heat dissipating conductive refractories, lowers the temperature of the lining to below that of the molten process materials. This causes a layer of slag and process metal to solidify or ?freeze? and form a protective ?skull? which completely coats the refractory hot face. Once formed, the slag skull insulates the refractories, reducing heat loss and protect the lining from erosion, chemical attack, thermal shock, and other stresses. The result: extended life and greatly improved refractory performance. The Ilmenite smelting process depends on the presence of a solidified slag skull to protect sidewall refractory material from chemical attach by molten slag. No known refractory material is able to withstand this corrosive material. To date, UCAR has not applied their Chill Kote ? technology in the ilmenite smelting industry. This paper revolves around the results obtained from conducting an ilmenite smelting campaign on a 500kW DC open-arc furnace with a UCAR designed refractory system. The purpose of this test was to establish the effects such a lining has on refractory wear and the reduction-smelting process. Proper thermo-couple management enabled the authors to monitor lining wear for the duration of the campaign. Prior to the pilot-scale campaign, modeling work was completed to evaluate the feasibility of applying UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? technology to ilmenite smelting furnaces. The successful operation of a pilot-scale furnace equipped with the UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? lining as well as concise modeling suggest that it should be a viable option to consider for an industrial-scale furnace.

Minera La Parreña, S.A. de C.V., Milpillas operation is an underground mine designed to process 8 352 tons of ore per day for the recovery of copper through crushing, heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning facilities. In order to optimize copper recovery during leaching, the ore is crushed to 13 mm and subjected to primary sampling every 15 minutes for metallurgical accounting. At the same particle size, primary sample goes to secondary sampling and then, the secondary sample is crushed to 2 mm before tertiary sampling. The tertiary sample is sent to laboratory where a final sample is obtained and pulverized to 106 microns for copper assay. This paper shows a review of sampling strategy focused on minimizing or eliminating sampling errors and an experiment designed to determine copper head grade profile as well as the best sampling frequency.

Underground observations in a coal mine have indicated failure oft he immediate roof above the bords. Careful observations and photographic recording of occurrences of these roof failures, termed ?roof guttering?, have been made. The occurrence of guttering results directly in roof instability, and indirectly, due to the interaction of the guttering with natural planes of weaknesses in the immediate roof rock. In this paper, relevant observations of roof guttering, possible mechanisms of formation of roof gutters, laboratory testing for determination of material strength and deformation properties, and numerical analyses to explain underground observations are described. Mapping of roof failures showed that these took place mainly towards the centre of the roadways. Roof guttering was observed often to occur violently and with little warning. Occurrence of roof guttering has a negative impact on production?some panels are abandoned, production times are increased and safety of workers is compromised. The numerical stress analyses showed that, although none of the constitutive behaviour criteria used predicted the observed underground failures correctly, the extension strain criterion gave the best agreement.

During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.
