Noise surveys conducted in underground coal mines have consistently indicated that auger mining machines subject the operator and helpers to excessive noise exposure. The machine cutting heads have been identified as the primary noise source. This report documents the research program conducted to (1) investigate the nature of the cutting head noise problem, (2) develop noise control concepts, (3) devise in-mine survivable techniques to implement the noise control concepts, and (4) build and demonstrate prototype reduced-noise auger miner cutting heads. The dynamic forces generated during coal cutting by the brittle fracture of coal are predominently low frequency. The low-frequency (less than 1500 Hz) structural response of the cutting head, therefore, determines the noise radiated by the cutting head. The most feasible methods of reducing the cutting head low-frequency response are to increase both the structural stiffness and the low-frequency damping. A technique was devised to achieve these goals. The standard plate helix was replaced by a sand-filled hollow helix of triangular cross section, and the core diameter was increased with an attendant reduction in helix depth. Extended in-mine tests demonstrated the operational capability of the reduced-noise auger cutting heads. The simple noise control concepts are valid for all continuous miner cutting heads. The sand-filled hollow helix technique, which achieved a 10 dB(A) noise reduction for the auger, can be used on any helix-bearing Cutting head.

During a research program to develop improved methods for recovering elemental sulfur and useful sulfur compounds from secondary source materials, the technical literature was searched for pertinent articles on processing methods. This report summarizes results of the literature survey and describes the more important processes that have been used or suggested for recovering sulfur and sulfur compounds from all non-Frasch sources. The bibliography presented represents a survey of the available English language literature on the subject through 1958, with particular attention focused on the period 1950 through 1958. Engineering Index and Industrial Arts Index were the principal guides used in the survey of this period. Chemical Abstracts was used to a limited extent to identify a few key foreign articles and patents. The Sulfur Symposium (4)4 published in November 1950 by Industrial and Engineering Chemistry includes a broadly representative selection of the literature up to 1949. Therefore, this reference was used extensively to locate and list pertinent articles on processing methods reported in the period prior to 1950.

In response to numerous requests for information as to the status of internal-combustion mine locomotives of the Diesel type that use heavy or non- volatile oil for fuel, with special reference to their safe use in coal mines, the United States Bureau of Mines is issuing this report. Data mere obtained, on application of such locomotives to cod mining only in Belgium, France, Germany, and Great Britain. The locomotives are used in coal mining in other countries, as well as in potash, iron, and other kinds of mining, but their chief development has been in coal mining in Germany, France, and Belgium. Recently popular interest in the Diesel type of engine for motive purposes was aroused in this country by the successful application of Diesel engines to railroad locomotives hauling fast transcontinental trains, and, according to published statements, at a low cost of fuel per mile of run.

This paper describing mining practices at the United Verde copper mine, Jerome, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts f the United States. At present mining operations are being conducted both underground and by electric shovels in an open pit. The open-pit work has been described by E. M. J. Alenius in a previous publication of the Bureau of Minos;3 the present paper will be confined to a description of the underground mine. The underground methods comprise horizontal cut-and-fill, shrinkage with delayed filling, horizontal square-set, inclined square-set, and top slice. The normal daily production of the underground mine is 3,000 tons of copper ore per day, requiring the employment of 900 men underground.

The Federal Bureau of Mines developed a 10,000-ampere cell to determine the economic feasibility of producing high-purity electrolytic titanium from mill scrap or offgrade sponge. Operating variables were investigated, matetial handling procedures were established, and the cost of electrorefining titanium was determined. The prototype cell produced premium-grade metal (<100 Brinell hardness number (B.h.n.)) from very impure Kroll sponge at a processing cost of less than $0.60 per pound. Refined metal was deposited at the cathode in the form of coarse (85 percent plus 34-mesh), hexagonal crystals of a titanium when the cell was operated an 850° C. A cathode current density of 1,000 amperes per square foot and a molten sodium chloride electrolyte containing approximately 5 percent by weight of soluble titanium were used. In continuous operation, at the optimum number of ampere-hours, (40,000), the current efficiency averaged slightly less than 60 percent. It was possible to supply large enough amounts of electric current for electrolysis to maintain the temperature of the bath, thus reducing overall power consumption to less than 5 kilowatt-hours per pound of metal refined.

This paper briefly describes the progress in mine safety in the United States, with emphasis on recent events that have followed since the explosion at the Sago Mine in January 2006. Legislation following the mine accidents last year and areas of work carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) related to the accidents are discussed. American coal production in 2006 was 1,150 million short tons. Most of this coal is consumed domestically, with annual exports of coal about 50 million tons. One third of annual production is produced at surface mines and the rest from underground. This coal is produced by about 82,000 miners working at 1,400 coal mines. Major improvements in coal mine safety have been made in the US since the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. The fatal injury rate in underground coal mines between 1977 and 2004 was reduced by 47.8% to 0.036. The annual number of fatalities dropped from 112 to 14 during that period. Likewise, the non-fatal days-lost injury rate was reduced by 42.6% from 10.87 to 6.24. The improvements in mine safety during this period can be seen in the graph of underground coal mine explosion fatalities and injuries from 1980 to present, which is shown in Figure 1. Between 1984 and 1993 (9 year period) there were 5 explosions and one major mine fire, for a total of 55 fatalities. Over the seven year period from 1993 to 1999 there were no fatalities from coal mine fires and explosions. However, in the six years since 2000 there have been 5 explosions and one fire, which have caused 37 fatalities. [ ]

In addition to fractures and joints, compositional factors and bedding influence the strength of clastic sedimentary rocks. Rock mass rating schemes must therefore consider all of these factors. In this paper, a rating scheme for clastic sediments based on geophysical measurements is described. Geo-physical logging allows an approximation of rock com-position to be obtained and an assessment of bedding frequency and laminations. Velocity measurements incorporate the effects of fracturing. The rating requires scores for the intact rock, bedding/cohesion, and defects. These are combined to yield a Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR). Determination of the GSR is objective and repeatable. GSR values are typically between 20 and 80 and can be related to the Coal Mine Roof Rating.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau&apos;s data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

The Bureau of Mines, in its effort to promote greater utilization of domestically abundant materials, conducted reasearch on an alternate mold material that has commercial potential for titanium investment casting. Using variations of the conventional lost wax molding process, investment shell molds were formed entirely of fused, calcia-stabilized Zr02 and a Zr02-forming binder. Optimization of binder/slurry properties&apos;, stucco grain size and dis¬tribution, and curing practices resulted in a structurally sound investment shell that was distortion free and thermally stable. Small titanium castings, weighing up to 10 pounds, were prepared in unheated molds by both static and centrifugal casting techniques. Microstruc¬tural examination of the castings revealed that mold fill and surface quality were enhanced by centrifugal casting, although good results also were obtained from the statically poured molds. Microstructural and electron microprobe examinations showed that excessive, brittle case formation could be avoided by curing the dried shell molds in air for at least 2 hours at 1,400° C. Increasing curing temperature and time above these levels yielded added bene¬fits. Molds fired in vacuum at 1,500° C for 4 hours yielded castings essen¬tially free of case formation. The tensile properties of as-cast test specimens (no surface conditioning performed) id the chemical composition of representative metal samples showed that castings produced were comparable to Grades C-1 and C-2 unalloyed titanium This indicated that no sifnificant degradation of metal properties resulted from mold/metal interaction.

Mine seals are used extensively in underground coal mines to segregate mined-out areas and to isolate fire zones or underground areas that are susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Over the years, 30,000 mine seals have been erected in underground coal mines in the United States. Mine seals, along with rock dusting and ventilation, represent the fundamental means of preventing underground coal mine explosions. In this study the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology to determine if each of three test mine seals were uniformly constructed. Three mine seals representing different construction methods and materials (cast-in-place foamed cement; solid block, polyurethane foam and gravel; and wire mesh, rebar and gunite) were erected at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory’s underground mine as part of an on-going research program. The seals were imaged using GPR with 400-, 500-, 900-, and 1,000-MHz antennas. We found that variations in uniformity existed in the material for the cast-in-place foamed cement seal. Variations in uniformity also existed in the seal made from solid block, polyurethane foam and gravel. The post-processed radar records correlated closely with recovered core samples (areas of gravel and polyurethane foam, and areas containing only polyurethane foam). Finally, the radar records of the seal made of wire mesh, rebar and gunite showed the various components. The results of this work suggest that GPR could be used as a tool to evaluate mine seal characteristics and construction uniformity.

The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. INTRODUCTION Methods for Removing Static Electricity Of the various means employed for preventing or removing accumulations of static electricity in industrial processes, grounding is the most common and most generally effective. It is a precaution readily applied to stationary machines anti may often be utilized to good advantage to rid persons and portable equipment of an acquired charge. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A. A surplus of vanadium has resulted from the tremendous output of uranium, of which vanadium is a byproduct. More knowledge of the properties and characteristics of vanadium as a pure metal has been needed so that industry can take advantage of its availability and use it according to the best principles of conservation. Besides the problem of utilization, there is the ever present need of finding new materials which will satisfy specific and demanding requirements of science and engineering; vanadium or one of its alloys may possess the latent potential for filling some of these needs. Thus this? research project was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine and examine some of the physical and mechanical properties of pure vanadium. A corallary investigation was the determination of the effect of the interstitial contaminants, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon, on unalloyed vanadium. The vanadium used for these determinations was principally the product of experimental production of the Bureau. The evaluation of this material, as small quantities became available, provided most of the data that have been obtained.

Engineering and economic evaluations were performed by the Bureau of Mines on 14 Frasch sulfur, 1 native sulfur, and 21 metal sulfide operations in 11 market economy countries. The evaluation included discounted-cash-flow rate-of-return economic analyses at 15 pct to determine the average total cost of production of these two commodities and the potential availability of elemental sulfur (8) and pyrite concentrate. The Bureau evaluated the potential availability of elemental sulfur and pyrite concentrate. Approximately 279 million metric tons (Mmt) of pyrite concentrate at 46 pct 8 is potentially recoverable from 422 Mmt of in situ metal sulfide ore. Nearly 89 pct of the total pyrite concentrate is available at an average total cost of production below the January 1984 pyrite concentrate market price ($43/mt). About 185 Mmt 8 is potentially recoverable from 253 Mmt of in situ elemental sulfur. About 99 pct of this sulfur is available at an average total cost of production below its January 1984 market price ($131/mt).

During the search for deposits of soluble potash salts in the United States, carried on by the United States Geological Survey, much infor- mation was collected on the salt resources and industry of the United States. The more important features of the information thus gath- ered, compiled, and digested may be classified under five headings, as follows: 1. Geology of the salt deposits of the United States. 2. Theories relating to the origin and formation of salt deposits. 3. Chemical composition of saline materials in the United States, principally rock salt and natural and artificial brines. 4. Statistics of salt production in the United States. 5. Technology of salt production. The first four items are not discussed in this report, but their treatment will comprise a separate report published by the Geologi- cal Survey, which will supplement this report, relating to salt- making processes, and will describe comprehensively the salt resources of the United States. Persons desiring a copy of that report should apply to the Director of the United States Geological Survey, Wash- ington, D. C. In addition to the discussion of processes, this report gives a brief description of the more important sources of salt in the United States. Annually, the United States uses more than 4 billion tons of new mineral materials, or about 40,000 pounds per person-about half being mineral fuels and the other half being metals and nonmetallics. The value of United States energy and processed materials of mineral origin exceeds $200 billion annually. Although a number of minerals are imported, especially some designated as "strategic and critical," most U.S. mineral supplies are derived from the domestic mines and processing facilities that you will be seeing, reading about, and visiting as you use this visitor guide. We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is intended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation&apos;s romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) donning proficiency of 243 miners. These workers were from eight underground coal mines in the eastern United States. The objectives of the study were (1) to gather information on skill levels, since all miners in the study had prior instruction and opportunity to practice donning the apparatus, and (2) to summarize a quality control procedure useful in conducting periodic evaluations of donning proficiency. The sampling procedure used proved to be both reasonable and efficient in gathering information on training effectiveness_ It also provided a good statistical base for making informed site-specific decisions regarding SCSR training needs. Results from the observed samples at each of the eight mines indicate a wide variability across sites. The rate at which miners failed to isolate their lungs varied from 33 to 40.0 pct. Concomitantly, proficiency rates (miners either performing adequately or demonstrating a perfect 3+3 sequence) ranged from 13.3 to 63.3 pct.

Low-cost hydroelectric energy in the Pacific Nortnwest has been an important factor in the development of a ferroalloy industry. Eleven companies, employing approximately 1,000 persons, produce about 116,000 tons (1954-58 average) annually of ferrosilicon, ferrochromium, ferromanganese, ferrophosphorus, silicomanganese, and ferronickel. About 7,500 tons (1954-58 average) of these ferroalloys is consumed in the Pacific Northwest States of Washington and Oregon; the rest is used principally in other western and mid-western markets. In 1959, the Bureau of Mines began a study to determine the current status and to evaluate the potential of the ferroalloy industry in the Pacific Northwest. The Bureau gathered information from operating alloy plants in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana; from published materials; and from consumers of ferroalloys.
