Longwall mining is an underground mining method during which a mechanical shearer progressively mines a large block of coal, called a panel, in an extensive area. During this operation the roof of the coal seam is supported only temporarily with hydraulic supports that protect the workers and the equipment on the coal face. As the coal is extracted, the supports automatically advance and the roof strata cave behind the supports. Caving results in fracturing and relaxation of the overlying strata, which is called "gob." Due its highly fractured nature, gob contains many flow paths for gas migration. Thus, if the overlying strata contain gassy sandstones or sandstone channels, gas shales or thinner coal seams which are not suitable for mining, then the mining-induced changes can cause unexpected or uncontrolled gas migration into the underground workplace. Vertical gob gas ventholes (GGV) are drilled into each longwall panel to capture the methane within the overlying fractured strata before it enters the work environment. Thus, it is important, first to understand the properties of the gas reservoir created by mining disturbances and, second, to optimize the well parameters and placement accordingly. In this paper, the production rate-pressure behaviors of six GGVs drilled over three adjacent panels were analyzed by using conventional multi-rate drawdown analysis techniques. The analyses were performed for infinite acting and pseudo-steady state flow models, which may be applicable during panel mining (DM) and after mining (AM) production periods of GGVs. These phases were analyzed separately since the reservoir properties, due to dynamic subsidence, boundary conditions and gas capacity of the gob reservoir may change between these two stages. The results suggest that conventional well test analysis techniques can be applicable to highly complex gob reservoirs and GGVs to determine parameters such as skin, permeability, radius of investigation, flow efficiency and damage ratio. The insights obtained from well test analyses can be used for a better understanding of the gob and for designing more effective gob gas venthole systems.

This report presents the results of a program to develop backfilling techniques to mitigate undesirable effects of hydraulic borehole uranium mining. Large underground cavities, formed during the borehole mining process, can be backfilled to prevent ground subsidence and to allow mining of adjacent uraniferous sandstone. Three backfilling techniques were tested in the laboratory and in the field: bulk dumping of slurry into the borehole from ground level, slurry injection under water, and slurry injection above the cavity water level. These techniques were tested with sand and with sand and one percent cement (by weight) mixtures. The project was accomplished in four tasks: equipment preparation and transport, mining operation to generate a full-sized cavity, backfilling operation, and assessment through core samples and subsidence checks. The concentrations of cement mixed with sand proved to be inadequate to bond the sand. Bulk dumping resulted in a 30-degree angle-of-repose, much too steep to completely fill the cavity. Both slurry injection techniques filled the cavity satisfactorily. However, underwater injection is the recommended backfilling technique because the borehole water level does not need to be pumped down during backfilling. The borehole itself was filled by bulk dumping of slurry. In conclusion, backfilling of borehole mining cavities is entirely feasible, and the preferred method is slurry injection under water.

During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and the results are described in this report.

This report presents the results of a demonstration of the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of hydraulic borehole mining of shallow oil sands. Borehole mining offers a method for extracting the oil sands with minimal disturbance to environmental quality because (1) no overburden is removed, (2) no waste rock piles are required, (3) the tailings can be backfilled into the borehole cavity, (4) the ground water quality should be undisturbed, (5) a closed-loop water system can be employed so that no surface streams are polluted, and (6) surface subsidence can be minimized by backfilling the mined cavities. This project consisted of two concurrent tasks: mining operations and environmental monitoring. To generate the environmental impact, nearly 1000 tons of oil sands were mined from two boreholes. Water quality and ground subsidence were monitored. No significant changes occurred in the chemical composition of the process water, indicating that the borehole mining process does not dissolve the mined material. The average subsidence in the immediate vicinity of the boreholes was about 1/2 inch, although some points were noted to be slightly elevated. In general, the amount of subsidence increased with time and decreased with distance from the bore-hole. A mining cost analysis was used to project an estimated cost for production mining of about $38 per barrel of oil.

Reserve and production data are shown for each of the fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas) and for uranium. The consumption data of each of the major consuming sectors (household-commercial, industrial, transportation, electric power, and miscellaneous) are broken down by energy source (coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, and nuclear). In addition, total energy consumption in the Nation in 1974 is compared with consumption in 1973 and 1975 (preliminary data).

The primary objective of this program was to determine the toxic fume and fire hazard of materials used in the construction of mine stoppings and in the sealing and reinforcing of mine ribs and roofs. The materials investigated were: silicone, phenolic, and isocyanate-based rigid foams, as well as epoxy and acrylate mine sealants. Of the rigid foams tested, the X-156 urethane foam presented the greatest toxic hazard based on toxic load values hydrogen chloride was the main toxic species evolved by this foam. In 'lone of the isocyanate-based compositions was hydrogen cyanide the major component, but its contribution increased with temperature. The FS-24 urethane and Celotex Max-Seal isocyanurate foams had the lowest toxic load values, although these two foams have different applications for in-mine use. Of the two mine sealants tested, the latex /acrylic coating presented the greater toxic hazard with acetic acid being the main toxic species evolved.

For the purpose of procuring data that could be used in estimating the value of the briquetting process as applied to American fuels, the United States Geological Survey, in cooperation with other interests, began in 1904, at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, certain experiments involving the production and use of bituminous-coal briquets. It installed at St. Louis, and later at Norfolk, machines for the manufacture of such briquets, and the output of these machines has been tested in locomotive service on several different railroads in comparison with natural fuels. An elaborate and carefully executed series of tests involving the use of natural coals and of briquets made from the same coal, previously crushed, was carried out on a locomotive mounted at the testing plant of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at Altoona, Pa.; and some preliminary experiments involving the use of briquets in marine service were made in connection with one of the Government's torpedo boats. A description of these tests is presented herewith. The results sustain the following general conelusions: 1. The briquets made on the Government's machines have well withstood exposure to the weather. and have suffered but little deterioration from handling. 2. In all classes of service involved by the experiments, the use of briquets in the place of natural coal appears to have increased the evaporative efficiency of the boilers tested. 3. The smoke produced has in no test been more dense with the briquets than with coal; on the contrary, in most tests the smoke density is said to have been less when briquets were used. 4. The use of briquets increases the facility with which an even fire over the whole area of the grate may be maintained.

Each session counts toward your employee’s 8-hour annual MSHA refresher training, thus saving an entire day of work.. The modules are used to refresh employees on the procedures, policies, and practices of working safely at a specific mine site and can easily be tailored to fit conditions and situations found on your property. Every module follows the same format, so that as the weeks pass, miners will start to approach every safety situation in the same way. A typical Toolbox Training session contains five basic steps that cover all the information in the module. 1. Identification of the hazard and discussions about the types of injuries typically associated with the hazard. 2. Discussions of some of the causes of the hazard. The MSHA example included with each module should be referenced. 3. After the hazard and accident has been explained and understood, discussions about best practices and tips for avoiding a similar accident. 4. Review of similar conditions or near misses from your mine site using the leading questions on the form to start a discussion. Specific examples of equipment or structures on the site that could lead to the same accident should be discussed. The blank space on the module is used to add your own remarks and questions to supplement the given information. 5. Miners fill out the training record on the back of the form with name, initials, and date of training session. The modules are designed to be kept in a standard three-ring binder and easily photocopied. This way, the same set of modules can be used for years to come. A blank form is included that can be used to create more Toolbox Training modules. The key component of Toolbox Training is to start a discussion among employees that will allow them to see the hazards around them every day and respond to these hazards in a safe and consistent manner. To start a discussion, ask questions that need more than a one-word response. Get the miners to talk about similar situations from their own experiences and give suggestions about how to fix the hazards around them. Toolbox Training is a quick and effective way to cover specific mining hazards, but it only works if miners are involved in the discussion.

The application of secondary producing methods for recovering additional oil from known fields has been recognized for many years as important to the economy of the nation. One of the most successful secondary methods is waterflooding, which conserves our natural resources by preventing premature abandoment of stripper leases and revitalizing previously abandoned areas. Waterflooding as a secondary-recovery method was introduced into the Midcontinent region in 1931, and its use as such has become widespread. As with most new methods, the most favorable fields and leases received primary attention, whereas those with viscous oil or less favorable sand characteristics were bypassed. Through the courtesy of the State Department, the Bureau of Mines has received a compreensive report on the jede industry of Burma, pre- pared by American Consul Winfield H. Scott, Rangoon, Burza. This mater- ial is the main basis for the present circular, although free use also has been made of reports on the jede industry in China and Germany by consular officers in those countries, to whom footnote credit is given. The word "jade" is said to be derived from the Spanish "piedra de ijada" (hijada) meaning, literally, "stone of the side," as jade was supposed to cure pains in the side; nephrite (a jade mineral) was named from the Greek word meaning kidney, because it was formerly warn as a re- medy for kidney diseases. To the Burmeso, jade is known as "Kyauksein," or green stone, and to the Chinese, all varieties of the material are referred to as "Yu" or "Yu-chi", According to Confucius, jade was symbolical of. justice, harmony, intelligence, and humanity, and the Chinese of today believe that by using ornaments made of this stone, the wearer is. protected from the "evil eye" as well as from diser.se. Ornaments of carved jade were known to the ancient civilizations of Mexico and Peru and to the peoples of other sections. of Central and South America, Jade ornaments also have been found in the lake dwellings of Switzerland and in Crete; thile in China, as far back as the Chou dynasty (B. C. 1122 B. C. 255) it was used in the production of various classes of precious vessels and as insignia of rank.

This study was conducted to identify, evaluate, and develop procedures to minimize or eliminate safety hazards associated with the electrokinetic dewatering process, such as toxic and volatile gas emissions, electrical shock, accidental detonation of explosives, electrochemical corrosion of metal appurtenances, and possibly others. The identification, evaluation, and procedure development were based on pertinent literature, existing safety regulations, interviews with mine personnel, physical and mechanical properties of the electrokinetic dewatering process, and physical characteristics of the material to be dewatered. The electrokinetic dewatering process was described in detail. Potential safety hazards were identified and evaluated. Procedures and/or safety regulations were developed to minimize or eliminate the potential hazards. It was recommended that the electrokinetic dewatering process when used in deep metal mines be properly monitored to obtain additional information on other potential hazards that possibly exist.

The present paper collects and discusses thermodynamic data relating to metal carbides and nitrides, with the view of obtaining usable heat and free energy of formation relationships. Pertinent data on both classes of substances are difficult to obtain experimentally and consequently are extremely rare; it is therefore necessary in many cases, if equations are to be derived, to introduce certain approximations and assumptions. Lack of adequate means of checking results by utilizing data of different types, such as was done frequently in the bulletins dealing with carbonates and sulphates, are readily apparent to anyone who has made even a cursory examination of the available information. Consequently, some of the relationships derived undoubtedly will be found to be inaccurate when more or better data become available. The Bureau of Mines developed a process using ion exchange to recover cobalt from spent copper leach solutions. A preliminary economic evaluation of the process indicated that about one-third of the capital cost was attributed to the total resin inventory, and one-third of the operating cost was required for reagents to remove iron from the ion-exchange eluates. An agitated Pachuca elution system was investigated in place of a fixed-bed elution system. The Pachuca system reduced the resin inventory by 27 pet when compared with the fixed-bed elution system. Processing fresh spent copper leach solution reduced the resin inventory by 20 pct and resin iron loading by 80 pct. Reagent requirements for removing iron from the eluates were decreased because less iron was extracted. The Pachuca system, along with processing fresh spent copper leach solution, reduced the total resin inventory by 47 pct. A revised cost evaluation of the cobalt recovery process was obtained to determine the effects of these process modifIcations. The estimated total capital cost for a plant processing 10,000 gpm of spent copper leach solution containing 26 ppm Co was $23.1 million. With credits for nickel, zinc, and copper byproducts, the estimated net operating cost was $5.10/lb of cobalt.

A field test was designed to inject a specially formulated two compound epoxy resin into the roof rock ahead of a working face to cement fractures and formation interfaces at the Westmoreland Coal Co., Winding Gulf Div., Eccles No. 5 Mine, Eccles, West Virginia. Five 30 foot long X 2 inch diameter, hold were drilled at an angle of 15° above the plane of roof line front the face of a working entry. The epoxy resin compounds were pumped through a proportioning unit and mixed in-line before being discharged into the drill hole under treatment it injection pressures up to a maximum of 450 psig. When the coal face was advanced an anomalous failure of the roof rock occurred in the treated section. Further testing was suspended until the cause of the failure could he determined. The polymers were tested, under confined conditions, in 2 inch pipe columns. Extreme temperature and pressure (up to 2400 psig) rises were recorded as they cured, It was concluded that this pressure source fractured the rock and caused the roof failure. The entire program was terminated after it was determined that the heat rise and resultant high pressures could not he controlled chemically or mechanically.

Previous work performed under Contract H0220003 suggested that the mean incombustible content could be obtained with fewer samples and smaller samples without greatly increasing the sampling error. Under Modification No. 4 additional surveys were made in twelve coal mines, representing six states. Same 2,500 samples were collected, analyzed for incombustible content, and statistically evaluated. The earlier findings were substantiated.

The most prevalent topsoiling systems are reviewed along with a listing of advantages/disadvantages and best features of each system. Seven mining regions are included, along with an analysis of prevailing land use, types of soils and attendant physical, chemical am biological characteristics. There are several probable areas of future research "lined which can benefit mining, minimize the social impact of mined lands and speed the return of mined lands to more productive long-term use.

This report describes the construction and testing of large (30 ft high by 55 ft wide) stopping and overcast structures in an oil shale mine. The work was undertaken to develop construction techniques and cost data, and to measure leakage rates on full scale structures in an oil shale mine. A design data base was developed by reviewing industry practice, oil shale industry plans, and technical literature. Alternate layouts for room and pillar mining were examined to find ways to reduce the size and number of ventilation control structures. Six full size stoppings and one overcast were built in the Colony Pilot Mine. Leakage rates were measured using both SF6 tracer gas techniques and the ?brattice window? method. The leakage was measured both before and after a full scale face blast. Blast air pressures were measured across two of the stoppings. Cost and leakage data were used to evaluate the projected overall performance of various combinations of the stoppings in a two-panel oil shale mine.
