"Chrysotile asbestos can be dyed with certain dyestuffs to form stable coloured products whose hemolytic and cytotoxicity are greatly reduced. Examples of these dyes are Thiazol Yellow G (a monazo dye) and Trypan Blue (a diazo dye). Other dye stuffs, for example, basic dyes with triphenyl methane structure, Brilliant Yellow (a diazo dye), and Methylene Blue (a thiazine dye) colour asbestos but do not reduce its toxicity. Similarly alizarin, 8-hydroxyquinoline, and representative members of the phthalein group Bromocresol Purple and Phenolphthalein.IntroductionThere is, at present, a controversy regarding the dangers of asbestos fibres, and attempts are being made to render it less toxic. One of these attempts consisted of treating chrysotile asbestos with gaseous phosphorus oxychloride, POCI], at ambient temperature and in absence of moisture. The product had to be heated at 300°C to 500°C to expel exess entrained reagent to get a material containing 0.5070 to 5% phosphate groups and known as Chrysophosphate (Lalancette and Dunnigan, 1982). This product showed decreased toxicity as measured by its hemolytic effect on red blood cells (fable 1). In another approach, Flowers (1983) showed that when chrysotile asbestos was thoroughly mixed with a solution of ferric ammonium sulphate and the slurry was then filtered and dried, the product showed a marked decrease in cytotoxicity.In the present investigation the problem of toxicity was considered from a different point-of-view. Chrysotile asbestos is a hydrated magnesium silicate that can be represented by the structural model shown in Figure 1 from which it can be seen that magnesium hydroxide groups, Mg(OH)2, form a part of the silicate structure. Certain organic reagents that are known to react with magnesium ion in solution to form chelates were reacted with asbestos to find out whether a chelate was also formed on the fibres, and if so , what will be the hemolytic action and cytotoxicity of the product."

This paper states how alloy and welding advances have made possible the rapid development of the use of aluminum in the construction of equipment for earth moving and off -highway rock hauling. The main details are given regarding the construction and field testing carried out on an aluminum prototype body. The test results of strain gauge readings are analysed, and a description is given of how these have been applied in subsequent designs. The increase in the number of aluminum units put into the various types of service in Canada, as well as the problems encountered, is described, and the experience gained from five years of field service is discussed in some detail. An assessment is also made of the durability of the e units. The economics of using aluminum, together with the current development position, are reviewed, and predictions are made for considerable future increases in the use of aluminum units in open-pit and off-highway operations.

General Summary THIS paper attempts to describe in a preliminary and general manner the nature of certain copper discoveries now being developed by Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited, in Holland township, in the interior of the Gaspe peninsula. Some copper mineralization appears to have been known here at the time of the earliest French explorations, was rediscovered in 1921, and has been under intermittent development by Noranda Mines since 1938. In the last two years discoveries have enhanced the picture so that the deposit now promises to develop into one of the important Canadian copper producers. As ideas are constantly changing with continuing development, any picture given now is very partial and tentative and must be subject to future revision. The nature of these copper occurrences differs from others known in eastern America. In many respects they have unique features but they are most closely akin to some copper deposits found away from the intrusive rocks in the porphyry copper districts of the western United States. The most important orebodies are replacement deposits in a limestone horizon in which the ore gangue is converted to skarn. These lie at considerable distances from any known intrusive but seem to have been derived from a buried stock of granite that intrudes the sedimentary rocks of Lower Devonian age. This intrusive has produced alteration effects in the overlying rocks that may afford a key to locating other ore areas in the Peninsula.

Development of a new hydrometallurgical flowsheet requires quantitative description and optimisation of all chemical processes in each step in the process, as well as mass and energy balances across a fully integrated circuit incorporating all the unit operations. This paper covers steps leading to early modelling of a gold processing plant based on a bromine/bromide lixiviant. Research conducted at SGS Lakefield in collaboration with Albemarle provided the data that were used in the development of this model. A previous investigation in this series described the leaching behaviour of various mineral types in Stabilized Bromine reagent. This paper is concerned with the gold recovery operations associated with a conceptual bromine leaching process. The recovery of gold by different types of resin and activated carbon was studied, along with various methods of stripping the gold from the extractant. The circuit is closed by electrolysing the spent leach liquor to oxidize some of the contained bromide back to bromine that would allow recycling the regenerated leach solution back to the leach step in the process.

Abstract As part of the active development programme pursued by Dominion Magnesium Limited since 1945, a modern extrusion plant was erected and has been in operation for about twelve months. The only source of nigh purity magnesium in the world, Canadian metal is produced by metallurgical processes within the frame-work of the mining industry, which gives a different viewpoint to every phase of production from other world suppliers of commercial grade metal whose operations are based on chemical industries and techniques. The superior properties of corrosion resistance and grain refinement have aided a programme of standardization, reducing the number of alloys supplied in extruded form from seven to four as an aid to economic production. The first big step was the development of a general purpose alloy known as AZ?21x covering all decorative and medium stressed applications, which will supersede two older alloys. Sales approaching a million feet in this alloy show that it bids fair to become the 'mild steel' of the magnesium industry, its applications ranging from terrazzo floor strip to textile machinery and television mast components. In the high stressed field, metallurgical features preclude low-cost extrusion of the older high-strength alloys, but recent development of a magnesium alloy containing zirconium promises an easily workable metal. Hitherto produced by expensive chemical additions, research now shows that the alloy can be produced by metallurgical means, which may make this alloy available for a wide range of commercial applications. Thus the future development programme for extruded products in the form of tube, bars, shapes, and structural angles and channels may evolve two alloys to cover all applications for strengths up to 52,000 lb. per sq. in. Such standardization is the result of taking advantage of the physical and metallurgical properties of high-purity magnesium instead of accepting techniques based on metal produced by older processes.

THE demand for high-quality aggregate is increasing in all phases of the construction industry and in all organizations associated with road building in Canada. The production of aggregate in Canada has increased almost continuously since the end of the war and has quadrupled since 1948. Increases during the past fifteen years can be accounted for by the expansion in all types of construction, particularly that of roads and highways. Total construction in 1959, based on preliminary estimates, has been valued at $7 billion, and an increase fore-cast for 1960 indicates optimism on the •construction horizon (1). Cement produced in Canada in 1959 amounted to 6.3 million tons. This is more than 2.5 times the 1948 production. Increased cement production indicates an increased use of concrete, and thus an increased need for aggregate. Natural sand and gravel deposits are gradually being depleted.

The Hoyle Pond underground mine, located in the Porcupine Gold Camp, east of the city of Timmins, Ontario, Canada, is the cornerstone of Goldcorp Canada Ltd?s Porcupine Gold Mines. Cut and fill, shrinkage, longhole and panel mining methods are employed to excavate the narrow gold bearing structures. In order to meet increased flow requirements of 256 m3/s at the mine, a new Fresh Air Raise (FAR) and new surface fans were commissioned in early 2005. The newly acquired fans were capable of supplying the desired volume of air within a range of 1.5 and 2.0 kPa. Upon commissioning of the surface fans the total pressure was found to be exceedingly high; far beyond the design capabilities of the new installation. Consequently only one surface fan could be operated at any given time providing about half the required volume of air. Extensive work was immediately started aimed at reducing the system resistance in order to permit operation of the two fans in parallel and achieve the required mine flows. Larger booster fans were installed in parallel at the 900 m level, a 3 m raise bore linking the 450 and 900 m levels was developed to twin the existing fresh air circuit, and the FAR from surface to the 450 m level was twinned with the original FAR. This strategy, completed in 2012, resulted in a drastic reduction in system resistance and pressures, allowing the two surface fresh air fans to be safely operated in parallel and meeting the flow requirements. This paper describes details of the engineering design work and commissioning of the modified ventilation system, successfully ensuring the long term viability of the project.

"Abstract -The Asturian fluorspar district consists of vein and stratiform deposits where mineralization is controlled by a combination of lithological and tectonic factors.It is postulated that these fluorspar deposits have been formed under disequilibrium conditions created during circulation of ascending hydrothermal solutions along faults and other high permeability conduits. Mixing of solutions is inferred from fluid inclusion studies. Cavity filling and replacement processes are very important in localizing the ore deposits and in determining their morphology.Permian volcanic rocks in the area yield a regional positive geochemical anomaly in fluorine implying that Permian vulcanism may be a possible primary source of fluorine.On a regional scale a relationship can be established between some of the ore deposits and important tectonic lineaments. The stratiform deposits preferentially occur within a calcareous-detrital facies located at the margins of basins. These basin margins are related to important synsedimentary faults.Fluorite is the only economic mineral in these deposits. Quartz, carbonates, barite and pyrite are common minerals accompanying fluorite. Other minerals that may occasionally be present as minor components are: marcasite, chalcopyrite, fahlore, sphalerite, galena and related supergene minerals."

In the processing of rare earth ores, a pure, mixed rare earth chloride solution is usually produced and used as the feed to solvent extraction circuits to separate the individual rare earths. Cerium(III) may be separated from the other rare earths by oxidising it to cerium(IV), which precipitates as cerium(IV) hydroxide in chloride liquors. This oxidation step may be inserted either before rare earth separation by solvent extraction or between solvent extraction circuits. Although oxidation of cerium by sodium hypochlorite has been known for many years, detailed conditions for oxidation are not readily available. "This Precious metals content copper scrap is treated with a copper smelting process, and copper and precious metals are recovered. The precious metal lost in the slag is increasing with increasing of treated scrap amount. To determine the portion of the precious metals chemically dissolved and that associated with the mechanically trapped matte in the slag will be a key factor to improve the recovery of those metals. The distribution of precious metals between copper matte and FeOx-SiO2 slag phases is determined at 1300 oC and a fixed partial pressure of SO2 of 0.1 atm for the matte grades from 40 to 70 mass% of copper. The distribution ratios show a tendency to increase when the grade of matte is increased. In addition, the solubility of platinum and rhodium in the FeOx-SiO2-CaO slag under the air and the solubility of platinum in the FeOx-SiO2 slag equilibrated with a pure platinum or the Pt-Cu alloy were determined at 1300oC in the range of oxygen partial pressure from 10-9 to 10-7. The solubility of platinum and rhodium in the slag tends to increase with increasing content of copper in the slag and oxygen partial pressure. INTRODUCTIONThe stringency of the supply and demand of platinum group metal (PGM) intensifies by localization for resources and increase of the demand for PGM, furthermore, smelting and the recycling of PGM in the nonferrous smelting process take an important role. Scrap containing a precious metal for the purpose of collection of PGM is treated by copper smelting recently. With increase of the treatment amounts, loss of PGM in slags is the serious problem.In considering of PGM loss in slags, knowledge of the distribution behavior for PGM between slag and matte phases or slag and copper phases and the PGM solubility in slags is important. The distribution ratios of silver and gold between the FeOx-SiO2 slag and the Fe-Cu matte were reported by Roghani (Roghani et al., 2000), Shinha (Shinha et al., 1985) and Takeda (Takeda et al., 1993) However, there is no data for the PGM distribution ratio. On the other hand, the PGM solubility in slags was reported by Sano (Sano et al., 1997) However, there is very few report for the solubility of PGM in the nonferrous smelting slags."

Concentration of sodium sulphate occurs in undrained basins under semi-arid conditions. Metal price is among the key variables in the open pit optimization and the economic evaluation process. The common approach to handle metal prices in open pit mine planning is to optimize the ultimate pit and the mining schedules using a fixed, flat metal price. In this respect, metal price is assumed to be known with certainty throughout the entire mine life, which in some cases can reach 80 years. Given the volatile nature of metal markets and the metal price cycles, the conventional pit optimization approach may generate sub-optimized mining plans, which results in either extra costs to mining projects or lost revenues, or both. Long-term operational decisions such as future pit expansions, beyond the currently optimized limits, cannot be handled using the pit optimization approach based on flat metal prices. There is a growing interest in the mining industry to model and manage such market uncertainty in the pit optimization as well as the project evaluations in order to maximize the value of mining operations. In this paper, the author will outline a practical approach to optimize the ultimate pit taking into account the volatility and variability of metal markets. The proposed approach uses a combination of the pit optimizer of the commercial MineSight package and a simulation-based economic modeling real options valuation approach employing the least-squares Monte Carlo algorithm. MineSight pit optimizer employs both the floating cone for initial optimization exercise and the standard Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. In this paper, Lerchs-Grossmann option will be used to generate the pit shells. Real options valuation approach used in this study is based on generating multiple metal price scenarios. Metal price uncertainty is modeled using stochastic metal price models such as the geometric Brownian motion and the mean-reverting process. The mining operational scenarios corresponding to the simulated metal prices are then optimized using the least-square Monte Carlo approach. The objective is to maximize the discounted cash flow value of the project while incorporating the operating flexibility to revise the operating status of the open pit with time as new information becomes available. The focus of this work is on the practicality of the proposed uncertainty-based pit optimization approach and the difference it can make to the technical operational mining decisions. A case study of a hypothetical open pit poly-metallic mine is provided. The deposit contains copper, gold and silver grades. The run of mine ore is sent to the process plant that produces copper concentrate with copper as the main metal and gold and silver as the by-products. Four uncertain variables are considered here include copper, gold, silver prices and foreign exchange rate. Both copper price and exchange rate are modeled using the mean-reverting process while gold and silver prices are modeled using the geometric Brownian motion. The case study is performed using both the conventional flat price pit optimization approach and the proposed uncertainty-based one to compare results.

We believe that it will remain so as long as there are economic cycles.The fortunes of the industry are tied to those sectors of the economy where decisions can be postponed until more favourable times: automobiles, housing, appliances, inventory building and capital spending. Over the past two years, while U.S. GNP fell by 3.8%, automobile production declined by 31 %, from 9.7 million units in 1973 to 6.7 million in 1975. Housing starts plummeted some 43% from 2.1 million units in 1973 to 1.2 million in 1975. Little wonder that U.S. copper consumption fell by 37% and zinc consumption by 38% over the same period.With the rest of the world's economies moving in unison with that of the United States, it is also not surprising that times have been tough for mining.Arthur Burns, chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, contends that each recession sows the seeds of its own recovery. The worse the recession, the better the subsequent recovery. If this is true, then the lot of the mining industry should improve significantly over the next two to three years."

INTRODUCTION THE PURPOSE of this article on methane is to present the simple basic facts of the characteristics, detection, occurrence, and control of this natural gas in metal mines, so that operators and .safety men may deal with it with some degree of confidence. Fortunately, although methane has been noted at many metal mines throughout Canada, the occurrences usually are small flows of short duration, and the ignitions experienced have, in most cases, had minor consequences. However, methane does present a hazard that can be of serious proportions, and ?any complacent attitude toward this gas that might exist in the minds .of people engaged in underground mining operations should be dispelled when it is ,pointed out that, in Ontario alone, ignitions of this gas have resulted in at least four fatalities, and eight men seriously injured and burned, during the past three years. lt is well-known that liberation of methane can and does .occur suddenly, often in mines where no gas has been found before, and that many ignitions and explosions have occurred in so called non-gassy mines. In view of this, it is apparent that no mine can, with any degree of certainty, be classified as non-gassy. CHARACTERISTICS OF METHANIZ The characteristics of natural gas encountered in most of the Ontario mines indicate that methane is the chief constituent. Methane (CH4), commonly termed 'marsh gas', and by the coal miner 'firedamp', is a colourless, odourless, and non-poisonous gas considerably lighter than air, and is the explosive gas frequently found in coal mines. Its physiological effects, closely resemble those resulting from nitrogen.

The grade of mineral resource estimates underpin all major economic considerations of mining prospects. While there are reporting requirements to satisfy when stating a mineral resource estimate, an examination of NI 43-101 style reports suggests that authors believe that there are a number of ways of addressing these requirements. As a reader of these reports, some processes are helpful and others are not so in getting a real appreciation of how realistic is the mineral resource estimate. Critical to the quality of the mineral resource estimate is how realistic is the economic mineral concentration component. In many cases, this parameter is called grade. The industry experiences increased difficulty in achieving realistic grade estimates as the sample grade variability increases. The level of transparency in a mineral resource estimate is very much a function of the competence of the author. An objective presentation of the critical data, such as grade sampling variability can assist a reader in determining if the geology of the mineral concentration is adequately understood and how realistic is mineral resource grade estimate. This paper has considered 75 NI 43-101 style reports released in the past 2 years. The review demonstrates features that were helpful in determining how realistic the mineral resource grade estimate is. If there is insufficient transparency in a report, there is a high probability that the mineral resource grade estimate will not be realistic.

Indications are that underground mining is gaining favour with large and small mining companies due to environmental and sustainability concerns. Dramatic changes to mine fill technologies will be needed in order to keep pace with these emerging trends. The industry will be compelled to gravitate toward zero discharge mining operations. Innovative handling of mine tailings will become a focal point in this effort. The challenges are to use a greater portion of the residues and to manufacture a fill with better properties. This is a tall order that can only be addressed through a systematic research and implementation process involving mining companies, universities, research organizations, manufacturers and governments. The mining industry has to be at the forefront of this technology push in mine fills for the future mines. It will also be called upon to lead the way in other research areas. The industry will have to partner with other technology providers: universities, government laboratories and consultants.

"The ocean has served humanity as a source of raw materials for thousands of years, but only on a minimal scale relative to its potential. Exploration programs have shown the ocean to contain a large number of mineral deposits of great extent and attractive grade. Recent research has indicated that a number of these deposits can be economically exploited with present-day technology and that the cost of winning many industrially important minerals from the oceanic deposits is potentially much less than that of winning similar minerals from land deposits. Although the finding of mineral deposits in the sea is a relatively simple matter at the present time, the exploitation of many of these deposits has lagged due to the lack of the availability of specific mining techniques for the individual deposits. Within the past two years, however, several developments have taken place in the design and testing of ocean mining systems in depths of water as great as 12,000 feet which indicate that the problem of mining in the ocean may soon be solved.Within the next decade, the ocean should prove to be a major source of many minerals for society and should come to dominate as a source of such metals as copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, etc. Within a few years of the initiation of the mining of the deep-sea metalliferous nodules, land sources of such metals as nickel, cobalt, copper, manganese, etc. will be seriously affected and it is conceivable that the present structure of the world mining industry will undergo a substantial change in character."

"IntroductionTHIS PAPER deals with chemical and mineralogical changes in wall-rocks associated with pitchblende mineralization in the Gold-fields area of Saskatchewan. The localities at which the rock specimens studied were collected, and descriptions of the various rock-types referred to, are given in a previous paper by the author (5).The geological field work upon which this paper is based was carried out while the writer was employed by the Eldorado Mining and Refining Company during the summers of 1948, 1949 and 1950. The laboratory work§ consisted largely of quantitative spectrographic analyses for both major and minor elements, supplemented by an examination of 250 thin sections of both altered and unaltered rocks.Character of the AlterationHydrothermal alteration, with associated pitchbende mineralization, is widespread in the Goldfields area of Saskatchewan. The most intense alteration is restricted to the immediate vicinity of fault or breccia zones, but large areas are affected to a minor extent.In detail, the relationship between alteration and pitchblende mineralization is complex, as individual veins do not in general have separate alteration halos. Pitchblende generally occurs in gash-like calcite veins or stringers in wide, fractured zones associated with faulting. Large, lenticular and tabular masses of slightly to intensely altered rock occur in the same wide fracture zones as the mineralized veins. However, vein deposition appears to be-long to a later fracturing period, after hydrothermal alteration was more or: less completed. Generally, the veins transect and are confined to highly altered rock, but on the other hand many highly altered zones intersected in diamond drill-core are barren of mineralized veins."

"The results of a series of model stope pours designed to investigate working pressures on bulkheads during hydraulic pouring of classified tailings backfill are reported. Total bulkhead pressures and fill water pressures were monitored under the condition of a fully saturated backfill. Similitude of the model testing is discussed and equations are developed to estimate bulkhead pressures under prototype conditions. The model results show that good base drainage, combined with a bulkhead setback, can reduce the expected bulkhead pressures to values such that timber or concrete block structures should be capable of supporting a saturated backfill. Introduction Bulkheads are used in underground running operations to block drift openings in order that hydraulically placed sand backfill can be contained in stope pours. Whenever possible, the sand fill is designed to have sufficient percolation rate so that excess hydraulic transport water will gravity drain out through the bulk headed drifts. This avoids costly decanting systems. Early bulkhead design assumed that the bulkhead pressure could be as high as 0h = Hy where H is the fill height and ""y is the saturated unit weight of the fill (Thomas et al., 1979)(1). A typical design pressure for a 50 m fill height would be 1250 kPa giving a design force of 12,500 kN on a bulkhead located in a drift of 10m2 in area . Typical bulkheads were 1 m thick heavily reinforced concrete structures formed and poured into a notched drift. Not only were these expensive structures but the associated problems of inside drainage systems and curing time delays increased production costs. As experience with bulkheads for large bulk pours increased and fill pressure measurements became available [see, for examples, Libby et al., 1975(2), Askey et al., 1978(3)] , 'free drainage' timber and concrete block bulkheads were designed. Substantial savings have been realized using these types of bulkheads but greater engineering design and monitoring of backfill pours is necessary to ensure that backfill pressures do not exceed the bulkhead design pressures.The effective and total stress components of fill pressure, the engineering concepts associated with the 'free drainage' design and some detailed design considerations have been discussed by Smith and Mitchell (1982)(4) . It is important to the safe use of these designs, however, that the basic engineering concepts be demonstrated and communicated to those responsible for the day-to-day backfill operations.
