THE DEVELOPMENT by the Iron Ore Company of Canada of the Quebec-Labrador mining project, which eventually led to 'Iron Ore in 1954', involved, from the start, several distinct undertakings. Among them, the most important were: The construction of a 360-mile railway, linking Knob Lake with Seven Islands. The erection of a railway terminal, and harbour facilities, at Seven Islands itself. The building of an entire townsite at Schefferville (formerly Knob Lake) The construction of two hydroelectric plants; and, finally, The development of a sufficient number of orebodies to enable a production of 10 to 15 million tons of ore a year. Since these phases of the project have already been the subject of previous discussions, this paper will not elaborate further on them but will rather concern itself with a brief outline of the Company's current mining practices.

A modified cast-on method has been developed to reinforce aluminum castings with steel insert. Defect-free bond between the steel insert and the aluminum casting has been consistently obtained. Data obtained from a push-out experiment indicated that the bond strength was much higher than that obtained using the Al-Fin approach. This paper introduces this modified method in four sections: the coating of the steel pins, the cast-in method, microstructure characterization, and the bond strength. The section on the coating of the steel pins contains coating material selection, electro-plating technique for plating Cu and Ni on steel, and diffusion bonding of the coatings to the steel. The section on cast-in method deals with factors that affecting the quality of the metallurgical bond between the coated steel and the aluminum castings. The results of microstructure characteristics of the bonding are presented in the microstructure characterization section. A push-out experiment and the results obtained using this method is described in the section of bond strength/mechanical property.

"In view of the increasing number of environmental regulations that have been promulgated all over the world in the last thirty years, non-ferrous smelters and refineries have had to learn and adapt to treating process bleed waste streams containing heavy metals. The result of such treatment invariably yields a gypsum-saturated solution containing salts such as alkali metal sulfates, chlorides and fluorides. Presence of anions such as sulfates, chlorides and fluorides in the discharge streams – presently not a major problem- are coming under increasing scrutiny and will have to be addressed in the near future. It is envisaged that discharge limits for sulfate ions will be in place in the near future. Treatment of brackish water to produce drinking water also results in brine streams containing alkali salts that have to be addressed for proper disposal. This paper reviews treatment options for such streams containing high levels of total dissolved solids with emphasis on sulfate removal. Areas covered would be: a) chemical treatment for removal of various constituents that make up the total dissolved solids b) processes for sulfate removal processes –thermal and non-thermal-to recover and reuse of treated water and c) brine use and treatment options.INTRODUCTIONThe rising cost of water and meeting the ever-changing stringent environmental discharge regulations make water recycling and reuse essential. The metallurgical industry has used water as a medium for dissolving and/or rejecting metals and chemicals in addition to removing thermal energy. Any excess process effluent is collected and sent to end-of-pipeline treatment and ultimately discharged to surface water for disposal under a permit. The conventional- and probably the cheapest way -of treating metal-bearing process effluent streams is lime neutralization followed by sulfide polishing for elimination of heavy metals to produce a stream that meets NPDES discharge limits. This results in a stream containing dissolved solids.These dissolved solids normally comprises of inorganic salts. The possible constituents are cations calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. The anions are sulfate, chloride, fluoride, nitrate, carbonate and bicarbonate. In addition to these constituents, the treated effluent streams contain very small amounts of heavy metals, oxyanions such as arsenites, arsenates, selenites and selenates. Process streams from gold operations contain residual cyanide. Small amounts of ammonium ions are also present in these streams based on the pH of the solution."

"It is crucial to understand the mechanism of the collector interacting with the mineral surface in the presence of water molecules, which could influence the relaxation and electronic properties of sulphide mineral surface due to the proximity effect for narrow band gap of semiconductors. The adsorptions of three typical collector molecules (xanthate, dithiocarbamate and dithiophosphate) on the sulphide mineral surfaces in the absence and presence of water molecule have been simulated by density-functional theory (DFT). The calculated results show that the adsorptions of collectors on clean mineral surface in vacuum are not in agreement with the observed flotation behaviours. The presence of water molecules has a great influence on the adsorption of collectors. The analysis of density of states of the mineral surface atom suggests that the adsorption of water molecules could influence the electronic properties of mineral surface and consequently influence the adsorption between the surface and the collector molecule.INTRODUCTIONIn the separation of multi-metal sulphide ores, the selectivity of a collector is a key factor for the efficient recovery of the aimed mineral. Xanthate, dithiocarbamate (DTC) and dithiophosphate (DTP) are the most common collectors used in the flotation of sulfide minerals. Generally, xanthate exhibits powerful collecting property but lack of selectivity. While dithiophosphate and dithiocarbamate show the good selectivity in the lead and copper sulphide mineral flotation. The mechanisms of these collectors interacting with the sulphide mineral had been attracted many attentions and several mechanism based on experimental results had been reported (Chander & Fuerstenau, 1974; Fuerstenau, 1990; Raju & Forsling, 1991; Crozier, 1991; Bradshaw, Cruywagen & O’Connor, 1995; Guler, Hicyilmaz, Gokagac & Emekci, 2006). However, the micro-mechanisms of the selectivity of these three thiol collectors on different sulphide mineral surfaces are not fully understood."

SOFCs with thin electrolyte of two types: SDC (15um) single-layer and YSZ (5um) + SDC (15um) bi-layer were fabricated by screen printing and co-firing on Ni¬YSZ cermet substrates. Using in-situ sintered Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3 cathode the SDC-cell shows high performance at low temperature, 1180mW/cm2 peak power density around 650°C, while the YSZ+SDC bi-layer cell generates about 340mW/cm2 at 650°C, and good performance at 700-800°C with almost theoretical OCV value. Many Zr-content micro-islands were found on the SDC electrolyte surface. The influence of co-firing temperature and thin film preparation methods on the Zr-islands' appearance was investigated.

"This study focuses on comparing the “blinding” effectiveness of various organic additives as part of a general review of using organic additives to mitigate preg-robbing and improve gold recovery during cyanide leaching of carbonaceous gold ores. The laboratory results compared the impact of various organic additives on the prevention of gold adsorption using both activated carbon and ore samples containing carbonaceous matter, generally referred to as total carbonaceous matter (TCM). Although several organic reagents were found to have a significant blinding effect on activated carbon, these results did not translate into increased gold leaching efficiencies with actual ore samples.INTRODUCTION Preg-robbing refractory ores, which contain carbonaceous matter, have been problematic in cyanide plants for many years. In industry, preg-robbing by carbonaceous matter may be mitigated using various techniques including flotation, to remove the carbonaceous matter; addition of blinding agents, to passivate the carbon surface and prevent adsorption of gold cyanide complex; roasting, to partially or fully destroy the carbonaceous matter; chemical oxidation (Abotsi & Osseo-Asare, 1986); pressure oxidation; or microbial deactivation (Dunne, Staunton, & Afewu, 2013). Carbon-in-Leach and Resin-in-Leach are also used as process alternatives in which activated carbon or resins are used to compete with the carbonaceous matter for gold cyanide adsorption. For highly preg-robbing ores, thiosulphate leaching may be considered as an alternative to conventional cyanide chemistry (Baláz, et al., 2000). Natural carbonaceous matter is composed mainly of hydrocarbons, organic acids, and graphitic/amorphous elemental carbon. Natural elemental carbon that behaves as activated carbon is considered to be the main reason for preg-robbing, although the true nature of this phenomenon is not fully understood (Tan, Feng, Lukey, & van Deventer, 2005). In general, the hydrocarbon fraction is assumed to have negligible interaction with gold, while organic acids, such as humic acids, may form complexes with gold, inhibiting its extraction in cyanide solutions. Organic reagents have been used for blinding carbonaceous matter in gold ores prior to cyanidation. Abotsi & Osseo-Asare (1987) tested various organic compounds, with two possible effects in mind. First, the organic compounds were expected to adsorb onto the surface of the solids as anionic/cationic species; the resulting electrostatic interactions between the Au(CN)2- anion and the negatively/positively charged surface would inhibit/enhance the gold uptake. Second, the organic reagents were expected to coat the surface of the carbonaceous component in the ore, limiting the available adsorption sites and reducing gold losses. "AbstractThis paper discusses the methods of handling air in a large asbestos mill presently being completed at the Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Company in Asbestos, Quebec.The mill, being the largest single asbestos producer in the world and capable of handling over 14,000 tons of ore per day, requires vast quantities of air. A minimum of 2,500.000 c.f.m. is required or about 10 tons of air for each ton of ore milled.Short descriptions of the process and systems requiring this air are given, followed by details of the fans and filters which make up the heart of the mill.This 'draw through' system, located on the top or 12th floor, is an automatically .controlled volume-pressure system creating the required suction to draw .air throughout the mill building and its numerous air systems.The dry mechanical method of milling develops enormous quantities of airborne dust and fibre. A section of this paper is devoted to a description of the multiplicity of dust systems within a system to control, filter, and remove this dust.Finally, the paper describes the method of returning the filtered air to the• working floors or to the outside, with some notes on heat, humidity and dust counts.IntroductionGeneralTHE discussions in this paper deal only with operations where air movement is involved. "The rehabilitation of underground excavations has been undertaken as long as mining has existed. The conventional methods have proven to be dangerous, time consuming and expensive. During the construction of Styldrift Mine at Royal Bafokeng Platinum several vertical and horizontal excavations had to be rehabilitated. With a zero tolerance attitude towards working in unsafe conditions, together with a non-negotiable timeline to construct and ramp up the mine, the project team could not rehabilitate these excavations using conventional methods. This paper details the approach used to rehabilitate excavations using remote methods and how it was adapted to suit varying operating conditions and requirements - ensuring that no person ever entered an unsafe excavation before it was fully rehabilitated and safe. INTRODUCTION Styldrift Mine is an expansion project of the Royal Bafokeng Platinum group. It is located in South Africa in the North West Province some 10 km south of the Sun City resort (Figure 1). The mine consists of a twin shaft system (Main Shaft and Services Shaft). Capital construction of the shaft and associated infrastructure started in 2009 and is projected to be completed during 2020. The designed steady state production capacity of the shaft is 230 ktpm of Merensky ore. Production ramp-up commenced in 2017 with steady state production set to be achieved 36 months later in the fourth quarter 2020.Merensky Reef was intersected at a depth of 600 m below surface and the shaft design has a mean mining depth of 630 m. The project was approved for execution in 2008 on the basis of a suitable mine design and bankable feasibility study. One of the main excavations that required rehabilitation was an underground reef silo, Silo 4. It is a key piece of infrastructure on the critical path to allow steady state production at Styldrift Mine to be achieved. During construction excessive scaling within the silo along its 64m length necessitated urgent rehabilitation to be able to meet the ramp-up schedule. The criticality and urgency of these excavations prompted the project team to reduce the risk of failure while ensuring safe and cost-effective rehabilitation. This paper will focus on the rehabilitation of Silo 4 while capturing the essence of the learnings of all the excavations that were rehabilitated remotely."

"The past demands for energy and the contributions by the major sources are shown for the world and regions, and for Canada. Three forecasts of future demand are presented. By the year 2000, the world will be consuming energy at a rate of 670-700 x 1015 Btu/year. Canada's rate is estimated at 20 x 1015 Btu/year. Electricity will increase its portion of energy from 7.5 per cent to 15 per cent, and more than 40 per cent of the primary energy w1ll. be required to generate 1t. World, regional and Canad1an forecasts are g1ven for total electricity generated and for electricity generated in nuclear stations. The integral world requirement for energy by the year 2000 will be over 12 x 10 18 Btu. Current recoverable fossil and hydro reserves are about 18 x 1018 Btu. The total reserves are estimated to be seven times greater.World production of electricity in nuclear stations by the year 2000 will be almost three times the electricity produced in the world today. The amount of fuel consumed in generating this electricity will depend upon the types and mix of reactors installed. The heavy water reactors, alone or in conjunction with fast breeders and liquid fuel reactors, are the most efficient users of uranium and thorium resources. The heavy water reactors are also the most efficient producers of plutonium which will be required as fuel for fast breeders."

The mining industry is undergoing a period of rapid transformative change.  This is the result of the social and financial accountabilities that the industry is faced with because of the world’s desire to cap average temperature increase to 1.50C above pre-industrial levels (UNFCC, 2016).  To limit global warming to 1.50C, greenhouse gas emissions must peak before 2025 at the latest and decline 43% by 2030.  In hard rock mining, comminution is identified as the major energy consumer, being responsible for 40-60% of the electricity use.  It follows that comminution is the major greenhouse gas emission process of the mine.  All effort is being made to radically reduce the carbon emissions of comminution. Grinding media plays a large role in the energy consumption and carbon emission story.  In recent years industry practitioners have attempted to quantify the grinding media carbon footprint.  This paper makes a definitive contribution to that discussion.  The grinding media carbon footprint is quantified in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emission terms in the context of a grinding media supplier.  Major emission contributors, steel, natural gas and electricity are discussed in detail.  The steel industry transition is a key factor. The paper will explore the steel industry transition and its effect on grinding media manufacturing.  The carbon footprint of heritage steel process routes are analysed and compared with the process routes of the future.  Emerging steel making technologies are presented and discussed.  The future of the steel manufacturing and procurement route for grinding media is proposed. This narrative allows for a comparison between the heritage carbon footprint and the future carbon footprint of manufactured grinding media.  Of equal importance is the opportunity of reducing the grinding media carbon footprint in the field.  The paper explores possibilities of reducing the grinding media carbon footprint at the customer site.  Media in use options are presented that take account of the mineral characteristics, the mill dynamics, and the product metallurgy to optimise both carbon footprint and media performance. It is intended that this is a landmark paper in the discussion of the carbon footprint of grinding media.

"The addition of sulphidic materials in the leaching of nickel laterites has several potential benefits that include improvements in the rheological behaviour of the blends, reductions in the sulphuric acid and steam requirements, sweetening of the nickel grade of the combined feed material, and the option of using a range of sulphidic materials. The current study examines the oxidative processing of 30% w/w blends of nickel concentrate and nickel laterite ore at 250oC. In particular, the viability of using low oxygen overpressures was examined for significant amounts of nickel flotation concentrate, up to 12% w/w. Further to this the impact of process water quality, in particular the presence of chloride, upon the kinetics of extraction and the mineralogy of the residue were also investigated. This paper will present the results of preliminary work in this area.INTRODUCTIONThe use of sulphidic ore as a source of sulphuric acid during oxidative hydrometallurgical processing is not a novel idea and can be traced back over forty years (Seidel & Fitzhugh, 1968). A series of patents pertaining to application of this approach for laterite ores can be subsequently found (O’Neill, 1973; Opratko et al., 1974; Rodriguez, 2008a, 2008b; O’Callaghan, 2010; Liu et al., 2011) and a few of articles containing published data (Ferron & Fleming, 2004; Quinn et al., 2009). The use of pyrrhotite tailings as a source of sulphuric acid has also been employed for the leaching of converter slags (Perederiy et al., 2011).It is known that hydrometallurgical operations such as the HPAL plant at Murrin Murrin have added small amounts of sulphides as either transitional (mixed sulphide/oxide) ore or non-smeltable concentrate. This can improve the rheology (Rodriguez, 2009) and provide heat credits. However these plants are generally limited in their ability to add such materials due to their reducing nature and given under highly acidic conditions that the breakdown potential of the titanium used for the autoclave lining is significantly reduced. A suitable oxidant must therefore be present to ensure the potential remains sufficiently high."

While the concepts of Aboriginal title share a similar jurisprudence in both Australia and Canada resource development regimes on Aboriginal title lands differ significantly. In Australia, the process is the right to negotiate with mining proponents. In Canada, the process is the duty to consult with government regarding mining projects. This paper compares and assesses the processes for ?consultation and negotiation? with Indigenous peoples when development actions (particularly in the context of mining resource development) impact Indigenous property rights and how agreement making can be progressed. This paper will question whether the resource development processes afford Indigenous people?s property rights full respect when mining developments on Indigenous lands are proposed.

The uranium deposits discovered by Amok (Canada) Ltd. in the Cluff Lake area of north western Saskatchewan occur at or near the southern edge of the uplifted basement core of the Carswell circular structure. Two types of mineralization, distinguishable, by their geological and structural setting and mineral paragenesis, have been recognized. The N-Claude type is characterized by a relatively simple mineral assemblage, consisting of uraninite or pitchblende with coffinite, and is accompanied by variable amounts of graphite and organic matter, and Fe, Cu, Pb and Mo sulphides. Both N and Claude orebodies occur within quartzofeldspathic gneisses of the basement core. On the other hand, the D-type ore has a complex mineral assemblage consisting of: uraninite, pitchblende, thucholite and coffinite, along with native gold and selenium; gold tellurides, and selenides of Pb, Bi, Ni and Co; sulphides of Fe, Cu and Pb; and organic matter. The D orebody occurs within carbonaceous shales at the base of the Athabasca Formation as well as in fault zones in regolithic quartzo feldspathic gneisses above the inverted unconformity. An age of 1050 m.y., which is consistent with a period (circa 1200-1000 m.y.) of widespread hydrothermal activity and uranium mineralization or reworking within and adjacent to the Athabasca Basin, has been obtained from uranium mineralization from the D orebody. Later reworking (circa470 m.y.) of the mineralization occurred at the intersection of older mineralized shear zones with radial faults produced during meteorite impact.

This paper reviews the history, developments and 10 milestones of the oxygen steelmaking processes, with a special focus on conventional autothermic converters, high-speed converters with a blowing rate up to 5 m3n/t min and allothermic converters with coal addition, post combustion and the possibility to increase the scrap rate up to 50%. Related operating results are introduced. A new process route, which is based on hot metal and chromium ore, is outlined. The cost advantage for the production of 304 stainless steel grade is higher than 100 USS/t. The synthesis of EAF and oxygen converter steelmaking, a comparison of decarburization rates, refining combustion burners for optimized oxygen-management in EAF and an example for a large advanced EAF are outlined. Possibilities of flexible steelmaking and the growth and outlook of worldwide oxygen steelmaking are described.

"14.1. INTRODUCTION1The boilerplate of an agreement is not a single provision, but a series of provisions that are expected in “every agreement”. They are sometimes also referred to as the “lawyer’s provisions”. Many businessmen consider the boilerplate to be superfluous and, to some extent, window-dressing by the lawyers – even legalese. They will often offer advice to the effect that it can “pretty well be ignored”. Such advice could not be more wrong.Most boilerplate provisions are essential parts of every agreement. Some may be part of a “standard package” and may have little relevance to the agreement at hand, but these are the exception rather than the rule. The exceptions should not be treated as justification for giving all these provisions short shrift. The boilerplate should receive the same review, consideration, and negotiation as the provisions that set forth the business deal. It is often these provisions that make the deal work or that are turned to at the time of disputes. If they are inadequate, as they sometimes are (unfortunately, some draftsmen are also loath to review or update their standard boilerplate provisions or to tailor them to the deal at hand), they can create problems, rather than offer solutions. Such problems can be costly and time-consuming for the parties to address. Inadequate or incomplete provisions may ultimately be one of the reasons for the parties to turn to the courts to settle their differences. On the other hand, good boilerplate provisions can help keep them out of the courts.One of the principal objectives of an agreement should be to provide procedures, or mechanics, for implementing agreed principles and for the parties to follow to settle their differences, real or perceived, without going to the expense and disruption of a lawsuit. An agreement should aim to keep the parties away from the courts, not serve as a springboard to the courts. It must nevertheless be acknowledged that, if there is a major falling-out among the parties to an agreement, the chances are that, however carefully the provisions of that agreement have been negotiated and drafted, the parties will end up before the courts or some other adjudicating body."

"The McMurray formation in the Athabasca oil sands deposits of northern Alberta is part of the world’s second largest proven crude oil reserves. The formation is characterized by stratigraphic layers that correspond to three different depositional environments: Marine, Estuarine, and Fluvial facies. Resource estimation for oil sands has traditionally relied on polygonal and inverse distance schemes. These techniques are simple and straightforward in practice, but they do not permit reliable uncertainty assessment. This paper describes the modelling of the McMurray formation using modern geostatistical techniques.Geostatistical modelling should be performed within homogeneous geological facies. The methodology for geostatistical simulation within each of the identified facies involves: 1) assessing the most appropriate stratigraphic transformation for optimization of the correlation structure; 2) determining representative distributions with declustering and debiasing techniques; 3) modelling spatial continuity of the bitumen grade, fines grade, water saturation, and other petrophysical variables; 4) performing estimation and cross validation as checks against simulation results; 5) performing simulation for uncertainty quantification of bitumen and fines grade; and 6) model checking of simulation results against the input data, and comparisons against the kriged models. These steps are described in detail. The application of these models for uncertainty quantification in support of resource classification is also discussed."

Aluminum alloys are increasingly used for automotive body construction but are susceptible to filiform corrosion or paint blistering in service. Filiform corrosion resistance of two 6000-series aluminum alloys was investigated in this work. Test panels were produced with full automotive coating layers and scribed parallel and perpendicular to the rolling direction. The corrosion exposure comprised an inoculation step with acidified salt solution followed by a 6-week exposure period at 95% relative humidity and either 25°C or 70°C. Greatest corrosion activity was measured on the alloy with higher copper content, AA6111. Higher temperature exposure led to greatly enhanced corrosion activity for AA6111 compared to the lower temperature exposure. The 70°C exposure also led to greater mean corrosion-affected area measurements for the low copper aluminum alloy, AA6022, but the effect was not as stark as that observed for AA6111. Rolling direction affected the propagation direction, and possibly mechanism, of the corrosion effects. Cross-sectional analysis revealed dense corrosion products within the filament, comprising mostly aluminum and oxygen but with traces of chloride and sulphate. Development of varying filament and blister types on a single test panel and the progression of corrosion underneath a filament into the substrate indicate that several corrosion mechanisms can develop on the test panel, testament to the complexity of the corroding surface developed on an aluminum automotive body panel.

"This paper examines the application of blasthole sloping to narrow vein mining in Canada, for ore deposits where widths are less than two metres. While the technique has now been utilized for more than ten years, it remains in the experimental stage and on-site testing is necessary for its adoption at new mining operations or in differ¬ent geological settings. It is intrinsically a safer method than other narrow vein methods in current use.The investigation describes the main operating parameters for mines recently surveyed. The criteria for method applicability are defined and the problems encountered are studied. It is concluded that blasthole sloping for narrow vein mining is a viable modern method which promises to gain popularity and that emerging fragmentation technology and blasting research can be used to further increase applicability of the stoping method."

The cost of raw material and energy is a continuing driving force towards working with increasing the recycling of ore based steelmaking residues. In Sweden no on-site sinter plants are operated at the integrated steelworks. Instead, selected residues from the plant are incorporated in a cold bonded briquette product which is recycled to the process via the blast furnace (BF). Since the BF sludge is the major bleed of zinc out of the furnace it is required to be de-zinced prior to recycling in the briquette product. In the present work landfilled BF sludge has been characterized with respect to chemical composition, particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The sludge was also subjected to laboratory scale hydrocyclone trials aiming at reducing the zinc content making the sludge viable for recycling. The results suggested that the sludge had been agglomerated prior to the characterization and hydrocyclone treatment. The zinc removal using the hydrocyclone was discussed.
