The Agassiz Metallotect and the Johnson Shear Zone represent two metallogenetic fea tures located within the northern and outhern belts, respectively. of the Aphebian-aged Lynn Lake greenstone belt in northern Manitoba . Numerous gold occu rrences are associated with these two regional features . The tratabound Agas iz Au-Ag deposit with 2.9 million tonnes of 5.2 g/tonne Au and 11.8 g/tonne Ag. occurs within the Agassiz Metallotect. The stratigraphic sequence characterizing the Agassiz Metallotect comprises interlayered ox ide. silicate and sulphide facies iron formations, biotite-rich and siliceous siltstones. and a high Mg- i-Cr basaltic rock that ha previou ly been identified as tholei itic picrite. These rocks can be traced in outcrop and by their INPUT and gradiometric signature for 65 km. The Johnson Shear Zone is an ill-defined 35 km long zone of strucwral disruption that crosscuts volcanic. sedimentary and intrusive rocks and contains numerous vein-type gold occurrences. Both of these metallotects are characterized by their low level of exploration activity and as a result offer excellent residual exploration potential. Rock, basal till and vegetation geochemical techniques applied in the vicinity of the Agassiz deposit indicate the presence of trace element dispersion halos associated with the mineralization. The halos define an exploration target larger than the mineralized zone. Gold occurrences within the two metallotects are described with emphasis on the Agassiz Au-Ag deposit . A wide range of gold occurrence-types is documented including syngencticstratabound , epigenetic-replacement and epigenetic-quartz vein .

IN 1932, Horace Onyett at Oroville, California, built a practical floating washing plant along the general lines as now known, using a 24 in. by 12 ft. trammel; it was fed with a ½ yard dragline bucket, rated then at 200 yards per day. Onyett dubbed his plant a 'Doodlebug' which name has clung to this type of operation ever since. In general, the 'Doodlebug' dredge is the outgrowth of the depression of 1929, wherein many dirt contractors had surplus idle equipment and a few of them ventured to use it for placer mining. Many such plants were impractical and poorly designed and adapted often to locations not suited to the purpose. However out of the general idea came refinements until today dragline dredging has a very definite place in the gold production of the world. Many of the early operators, being mainly contractors without mining experience or technical knowledge of gold saving, geology, or mechanical design, naturally went through stages of trial and error until a workable unit became standard practice. Credit should be given Bodenson Iron Works of San Francisco, who did a notable job of pioneering and building of floating washing plants; also, to Lord and Bishop, contractors of Sacramento, who were among the early operators, and to several others who built and rebuilt their plants until the weak spots were strengthened to take the beating required, and yet deliver a high degree of efficiency.

For the past eight years, No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Depart~ of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. °This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room-and-pillar method was employed, and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labour troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine, was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In ?the interval, development work for longwall retreating below the 5,900-foot level was vigorously pushed.

"Dialkyl dithiophosphinates are a unique class of collectors used in the flotation processing of Cu- Au, complex polymetallic, and precious metal ores. They are known to exhibit higher selectivity and flotation rates for Cu sulfides, galena, and precious metal values in the presence of other gangue sulfides, than the traditionally used collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates and xanthates. They also have an attractive HSE profile. Historically, for most reagents used in flotation, practical methods of chemical usage have preceded detailed scientific understanding of how they work; this applies also to dithiophosphinates. Recently, however, the research community has shown significant interest in this chemistry, and numerous studies have been conducted to understand the fundamentals of interactions of dithiophosphinates with several base metal sulfides and precious metals. A critical overview of fundamental studies, laboratory ore flotation, and plant practice of dithiophosphinates is given in this paper. The findings from these studies are rationalized by drawing on concepts and insights from coordination chemistry. A comparison between the interactions of dithiophosphinates and dithiophosphate analogues with various minerals and metals is also made throughout. We believe that such a critical analysis/overview will be invaluable in identifying gaps in knowledge regarding this important set of compounds, which in turn may provide a basis for the design of studies that can advance understanding of their flotation performance. INTRODUCTIONDialkyl dithiophosphinates are an important member of the class of thiophosphorus compounds that are widely used in flotation beneficiation of base metal sulfide and precious metals ores. Ore flotation studies and plant practice experience have demonstrated their unique properties compared to the traditionally used sulfide collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates (their closest analogues) and xanthates. The predominant dialkyl dithiophosphinate used in the industry today is sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (a.k.a. DIBDTPi; AEROPHINE® 3418A1 introduced by American Cyanamid in the late 1970s; Figure 1). The widest application of AEROPHINE 3418A is found in complex polymetallic ores of Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn where it has demonstrated improved recoveries (and flotation rates) of sulfide minerals of Cu, Pb and Ag and selectivity against sphalerite, iron sulfides, and penalty elements (Mingione, 1991). More recently, it has also been used as a collector in the processing of Cu, Cu-Ni, and Ni ores (Guitard et al., 2015) and Cu-Au ores (Dunne, 2005). In general, it is considered to possess the collecting power of xanthates together with the selectivity (against pyrite) of dithiophosphates (Hope et al., 2003a, 2003b), while requiring lower dosages than those reagents (Guitard et al., 2015). AEROPHINE® 3418A has also found an important place in several targeted formulations to improve flotation performance. Other benefits of this reagent include higher flotation rates, having a better HSE (health, safety and environmental) profile2 compared to xanthate, and exhibiting resistance to hydrolysis and oxidation (Guitard et al., 2015). Compared to diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), which is known to contribute significantly to frothing (often leading to over-frothing), AEROPHINE® 3418A is observed to be froth neutral (i.e. it does not alter the existing froth characteristics). As is the case for other flotation reagents, the design and application of AEROPHINE® 3418A has preceded understanding of its behavior at a fundamental level. Recently, there have been numerous fundamental and application studies designed to develop a better understanding of its interaction with sulfide minerals and precious metals. "With the increase of shaft excavation depth, the thickness of the shaft lining increases sharply. It is difficult to reduce thickness of lining effectively by improving high-strength concrete performance. The concept of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is that surrounding rock plays a certain role in tunnel support. The solution should be to find the correct relationship between shaft lining thickness and rock strength, which is related with the interaction between the surrounding rock and concrete lining. The plane strain mechanics model is introduced to calculate lining thickness. Shaft lining design of Cixi Colliery in China is completed with the mechanics-based method proposed in this study. The lining design is verified through numerical simulation and field monitoring. The simulation results show that the maximum mises stress is located at the inner edge of the shaft lining. The increase of lining thickness cannot effectively reduce concrete grade. The monitoring results indicate that a lining design thickness of 900mm with C60 concrete, is safe and reliable in the shaft over 1000metres.This analytical design method can well be referenced in similar deep shaft projects.INTRODUCTION The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), thought to have helped revolutionize the modern tunneling method, is the most extensive design philosophy and construction principle in today's tunnel engineering. It began to attract attention in the 1960s based on the work of Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, Leopold Müller, and Franz Pacher in Austria[1]. NATM was originally developed for tunneling in depth and in high situ-stress conditions in the Alps. The history of sequential excavation was reviewed, which highlights the progress of tunnel design and construction in Europe after NATM[2]. Structural conditions were introduced into the equilibrium of tunnels in NATM, and the additional force was estimated to stabilize the excavation of the tunnel[3].From the perspective of applied mechanics, there was no accuracy theory to explain the interaction between the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground. "It is accepted widely that pressure oxidation (POX) is the most appropriate technology for processing of arsenic containing refractory gold ores. However, studies on the stability of various iron-arsenic precipitates formed during POX are limited. Since the behaviour of these phases could have significant practical implications for gold processing plants, it is important to study them in isolation. This paper compares two synthetic precipitates, basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS) and basic ferric sulphate (BFS) in terms of their formation, behaviour during hot curing and cyanidation, as well as their environmental stability. BFS and BFAS were synthesised hydrothermally at 205°C and their mineralogy was confirmed using various techniques. During synthesis, the addition of H3AsO4 into an aqueous Fe2(SO4)3-H2SO4 mixture significantly decreased the iron yield to BFAS in comparison to BFS under equimolar initial iron and acid concentrations. The BFAS dissolution kinetics was slightly faster, as compared to BFS, during subsequent hot curing. Cyanidation test work on the washed synthetic precipitates indicated that the lime consumption of BFAS was three times lower in comparison to BFS, while cyanide consumptions were comparable. Fresh BFS and BFAS precipitates, as well as their cyanidation residues, were found to pass the respective environmental tests in terms of arsenic release.INTRODUCTION Pressure oxidation (POX) is generally viewed as the most appropriate technology for the processing of arsenic-containing refractory gold ores due to the stabilisation of arsenic in the leach residue (Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007; Gomez et al., 2008; Harris, 2003; Collins, Berezowsky, & Weir, 1988). Detailed laboratory studies indicated that several Fe(III)-arsenate type compounds may be formed under typical conditions of autoclave treatment of refractory gold ores (Swash & Monhemius, 1994; Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007; Gomez et al., 2008, 2010; Gomez, Becze, Cutler, & Demopoulos, 2011). The basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS) phase (Gomez et al., 2008), also known as Type II ferric arsenate (Swash & Monhemius, 1994) or Phase 3 (Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007), is one of the most common arsenic-bearing products (Harris, 2003; Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007). BFAS precipitation is viewed as one of the best routes for arsenic stabilisation and performed equally well to scorodite during environmental stability tests (Harris, 2003; Swash & Monhemius, 1994; Dutrizac & Jambor, 2007; Gomez et al., 2008, 2011)."

Surfaces forces have been measured between gold sphere and gold-coated glass plate in xanthate solutions using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The measurements conducted in potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solutions showed long-range hydrophobic forces, with the force curves showing no evidence for nanonubbles on the surface. The strongest hydrophobic force was measured at contact angle of 94° with a decay length of 23 nm. The hydrophobic force became weaker at higher concentrations and after a long immersion time, which may be attributed to the xanthate species adsorbed on top of the first mono layer. The hydrophobic force became stronger when the residual xanthate solution is displaced by pure water, indicating that hydrophobic force becomes the strongest in pure water.

Forecasts prepared by the B.C. Research Council for the National Harbours Board suggest that mineral shipments through B.C. Lower Mainland port facilities will increase more than four-fold, from 6 to about 25 million tons, during the decade 1965 to 1975. The longer term outlook is for a six-fold increase to about 35 million tons by 1985. In 1967, minerais accounted for more than one-third of the total deep-sea traffic tonnage, nearly as much as grain. By 1975, the minerals' share will be about half the total. The principal items are exports of potash from Saskatchewan, and of coal and sulphur from Alberta and British Columbia. Additional exports include copper and other mineral concentrates and propane. Imports are chiefly salt and phosphate rock. Coastal traffic in such items as cement, sand and grave!, and limestone totalled 3.3 mil-lion tons in 1967. They will continue to be of major importance, but do not have the spectacular growth potential of the deep-sea traffic.

"The Cigar Lake uranium deposit, in the Athabasca area of north Saskatchewan, was discovered in May 1981 by Cogema (Canada) Ltd., as operator of the Waterbury Lake Joint Venture.The deposit, which is devoid of direct surface expression, is located at the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic (Aphebian) Wollaston Group meta-sediments and the Middle Proterozoic (Helikian) Athabasca sandstone, at a depth of 410 m to 450 m below surface.At the end of 1984, the deposit had been defined by 105 mineralized holes over a length of 1800 m and a width of between 25m and 105m. It has the shape of flat-lying /em 5 m to 30m thick and shows a remarkable longitudinal and lateral continuity from the information obtained to date. A well defined bulge of the unconformity underlies the mineralized zone over its entire length.The deposit appears to be controlled by an east-west trending structure within which a particular rock facies (""augen gneiss'') has developed in the graphitic metapelites of the Wollaston Group. It is surrounded by a strong alteration halo affecting both sandstone and basement, characterized by extensive development of Mg-AI rich clay minerals (illite-chlorite). The mineralization is hosted principally by the Athabasca sandstone, and consists mainly of uraninite and sulfa-arsenides of nickel and cobalt. Numerous geochemical and geophysical surveys have been carried out in the Cigar Lake area, and although no specific geochemical or geophysical anomaly can be directly associated with the mineralized body, there may be locally a good coincidence.However, a combination of several methods proved extremely useful in interpreting the regional geology and defining the drilling targets within the favourable areas.Although the Cigar Lake deposit shows many similarities with several classical deposits of the Athabasca region, it is characterized by the intensity of its alteration processes and the presence of massive, extremely high grade mineralization.At the end of 1984, the global geological reserves estimated by geostatistics on the main mineralized ""pod"" of the deposit amounted to 110,000 metric tonnes of uranium at an average grade of 12.2% U, with a precision of 25% at the 95% confidence level."

The history of electrolytic copper production in Finland is closely connected with the industrialization of Finland and events of the Second World War. Production of cathode copper by electrowinning from the processing of Outokumpu ore started in 1913 based on the Hybinette nickel process, however due to the poor performance of this process, the plant was closed in 1929. Outokumpu commenced copper smelting at Imatra in eastern Finland in 1936 producing blister copper for refining outside the country. Due to the threating military situation, a new electrolytic copper refinery was built in 1941 at Pori in western Finland to refine the anodes. This was the first electrolytic copper refinery in Finland. It was built with 108 cells having a capacity of 12,000 tonnes/y. In addition, the smelter was relocated to nearby Harjavalta in 1944–1945. To fulfill the war reparations included in the peace treaty with the Soviet Union, a doubling of the smelter capacity was realised, with the Pori refinery capacity increasing to 20,000 tonnes/y in 1946 by adding additional cells. The cornerstone of Finnish metallurgical technology — Outokumpu flash smelting — was invented with the new technology commissioned at Harjavalta in 1949 replacing the electric furnace and providing a further increase in copper output with subsequent enlargement of the refinery. By 1963, the plant consisted of 380 cells with a capacity of 48,000 tonnes/y of cathode copper. The Pori electrolytic copper refinery has operated continuously since 1941. Commencing in 2004 the Pori refinery has been part of the Boliden group of Sweden. The most recent plant upgrade was in 2007 with the installation of permanent cathode technology. In 2017, the production of the Pori refinery was 133,000 tonnes of copper cathode, 2,300 tonnes of nickel sulphate, along with 66 tonnes of silver and 4.6 tonnes of gold. This paper describes these outstanding achievements. Finland’s commercial and industrial interests were developed to serve the Empire’s needs. Finland had raw materials, but at the start of the 20th century Finnish industry was based on the use of wood as raw material and agricultural products. The mining industry was only a few percent of the country’s industrial production.

LEAD poisoning is perhaps the oldest and, until recent years, the most misunderstood of all industrial diseases. Hippocrates appears to have recognized a relationship in the colic experienced by a patient who worked with metals, and the ancient literature is filled with references to the colics and 'dry bellyaches'. The colic and other sequalæ following drinking of lead-bearing waters and, particularly, wines has excited possibly more comment in the older medical literature than any other ætological factor. It was not until1656, when Stockhusen definitely connected the colic of the workmen with the fumes given off in the process, that the true danger to those working with lead was recognized. Unfortunately, something over 200 years elapsed before industry took any note of Stockhusen's discovery; it remained for Legge and Goodly and investigators of the early 1900's to forcibly educate their profession and industry to the manner in which lead gained entrance to the body. The work of Legge and Goodly was published in 1912 and the clearness with which these investigators presented the scientific data which they had accumulated will mark this volume as perhaps the first and most important contribution to our modern knowledge of the subject. It also ushered in a period when, in the short space of thirty years, lead poisoning has been reduced from one of the most baffiing and widespread o industrial diseases to one which can be anticipated and controlled. The next great contribution came in 1926 with the publication of the work of the Harvard group. Here, for the first time, was the physiological behaviour of lead laid bare, and it is to the discoveries of these authors that we owe our modern treatment of lead poisoning.

At the last annual meeting of this Institute the programme very properly was drawn up and carried out with the special object of calling attention to the Dominion's position and problems with regard to fuel supplies. That subject, always one of serious concern, was a source of considerable anxiety twelve months ago. It is still so, but in a decidedly less degree than at that time. So far as the immediate fuel situation is concerned our anxieties have been relieved. And I think we can safely say that such a consciousness of our difficulties and determination to overcome them, has been developed in the minds of our people that there will be no slackening of the offensive until a final solution is reached. In selecting a subject of major importance for the present occasion I have felt free to digress from the pressing problems of last year and to go back, for a starting point, to the presidential address of two years ago .. I do not, however, wish to enter the controversy that has developed as a result of that address, though in spite of my own failure to amass a fortune from participation in certain mining ventures, I am decidedly inclined to the optimistic view that Dr. Corless presented of the future of our mining industry. You will perhaps have observed that in its general wording the title of my paper bears a marked resemblance to that of that address. This simila1ity of titles is not accidental. It is intentional on my part.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) remains one of the major environmental problems for the mining industry particularly for many abandoned mine sites. The production of AMD as is commonly known can significantly affect the surrounding groundwater and surface water of the mine site. With the objective to investigate the impact of the AMD produced at the abandoned Kettara mine site (Morocco), groundwater sampling campaign was performed at this site. The sampled waters were analyzed to determine the hydrogeochemical composition, and then results were analyzed using different studied methods such as multivariate statistical analysis and geochemical modeling techniques. Investigation results show that the hydrochemistry of sampled waters is characterized by the relatively significant enrichment of Ca2+, Mg2+ and SO4 2-. The typical mine waters belong to the (Ca2+ +Mg2+)-SO4 2-type. Seasonal variations in major ion concentrations were partly attributed to dissolution/ precipitation processes. The saturation index (SI) calculation of the representative dissolved minerals in waters show that groundwater samples are undersaturated with respect to most potential sulphated secondary minerals.

"Mg alloys are extensively used as light structural materials in modern industry. Mn and RE (rareearth) metals are effectively used as alloying elements to enhance the properties of Mg alloys. Therefore, the thermodynamic database of those alloys is important in the Mg alloy design and processing. Critical evaluation and optimization of all available literature data for the Mn-RE systems were conducted to obtain reliable thermodynamic functions. The Mn-RE systems shows systematic changes in the phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties with increasing atomic number in the lanthanide series. This systematic approach for all RE elements allows to resolve inconsistencies in the available experimental data. INTRODUCTIONRare Earth (RE) metals are widely used in many industrial fields including permanent magnet, electronic materials and structural materials. As a small addition of RE can enhance magnetic, electronic, optical and mechanical properties of numerous materials, the usage of the RE is still expanding regardless of the strategic control of their supply.Magnesium alloys are getting great scientific and industrial attention as the lightest structural materials. One of the drawbacks of Mg alloys is their poor formability at room temperature due to the limited slip system with hcp crystal structure. Recently, several studies (Farzadfar et al., 2011; Sandloebes et al., 2010; Stanford, 2010; Stanford et al., 2008; Yan et al., 2010) show that the additions of small amounts of RE can considerably enhance the ductility of Mg alloys. Therefore, a lot of research on Mg-RE alloys is undergoing to clarify the role of RE on the enhanced deformation mechanism and to find out the most optimum Mg alloy compositions. In order to respond to the need of Mg-RE alloy development, a large thermodynamic database for Mg alloys containing RE has been developed with critical systematic analysis and optimization of the entire RE series data. This includes the thermodynamic database of the Mg-RE (Kang et al., 2009), Mg-RE-RE (Kang et al., 2009), Mg-Al-RE (Jin et al., 2011; Jin et al., 2010), Mg-Zn-RE and Mg-Mn-RE systems."

"The stress equilibrium is disturbed in a body of rock by a mine opening and is restored by a redistribution of the stresses around the opening. The pattern of the redistribution of unilateral stress around an opening has been established by mathematical analysis and photoelastic measurements. The pattern for multilateral stress is found by superimposition of unilateral fields. The mathematical analysts do not use the elastic moduli as parameters and they are not significant in photoelastic work. The medium is isotropic. The concept of unilateral stress from vertical loading and the classical pattern of its stress distribution around openings does not explain commonly observed failures around the perimeters of mine openings. They show evidence of compression where tension is postulated.When it is recognized that few minerals and perhaps no rocks are Hooke Solids, most rocks must be St. Venant Solids. The components have varying degrees of elasticity and viscosity. The assembly will be-have elastically to rupture under shock loading, but when loaded short of rupture will adjust viscously to equilibrium. Similarly, the highly elastic components may initiate rupture before equilibrium can be established when stress is instantaneously relieved. Polycrystalline adjustments may produce permanent deformation. The mechanics of consolidation, especially in sedimentary deposits, ac-quire a stress component normal to the direction of compaction which can exceed that of the loading. It is one source of prestress. There are others. The principles of prestress design are based on the normal beam reactions, modified by a built-in compression in the lower chord. "Goldcorp is evaluating the potential for economic reprocessing of historic tailings at several sites, including the Aunor A facility located in Timmins. The overall project is investigating the ability to recover value, remove sulphide minerals and alternative tailings re-deposition strategies. Desulphurization of tailings will eliminate potential acid generation while improved tailings re-deposition could reduce long-term liabilities and closure costs. Through a task-share project between CanmetMINING and Goldcorp, tailings obtained from Aunor A site have been characterized using mineral association analysis and diagnostic separation techniques. The selected tailing samples contain about 2 g/t of gold. Mineralogical analysis has identified coarse agglomerates bound with gypsum and significant free gold, confirmed by high recoveries in cyanide leach tests. However, despite no evidence of surface passivation on the minerals, conventional flotation techniques were found to be ineffective in concentrating gold or sulphides due to the high fines content and highly agglomerated particles.INTRODUCTION Aunor Mine is one of the historic mines that belongs to Porcupine Gold Mines (PGM) in Timmins, Ontario. PGM has undertaken an extensive mine closure program to remediate the legacy and closed mines with the funding supported by operating mines since 2006. Over the course of 100 years of operation in the Porcupine camp, it is estimated (Stevens et al., 2013) that about 130 million tonnes of tailings have been generated. Aunor Mine produced 2.5 million troy ounces of gold between 1940 and 1984, while processing over 7.6 million tons of ore. The original gold grade of Aunor Mine ores was about 10 g/t. With 95% gold recovery at the time, an estimate of 0.5 g/t of gold remains in the Aunor Mine tailings. Aunor Mine has two tailings impoundment areas: designated as Aunor A and Aunor B. The two sites are similar in size, about 7 hectares each. The amount of tailings in the Aunor A site alone is about 3.2 million tonnes. In 2017, bulk tailings were sampled from five designated locations in Aunor A. They were characterized using mineral association analysis and diagnostic separation techniques. The bulk tailings samples contained about 10% total sulphur, 10% iron, 2% arsenic and 2 g/t of gold. The prime objective of this collaborative work between CanmetMINING and Goldcorp is to facilitate the timely development and deployment of innovative tailings reprocessing solutions, specifically in the areas of desulphurization, and recovery of metals. This work targeted specific tailings of interest to Goldcorp which goals are to improve its environmental footprint and to reduce long-term liability. Thus, it is imperative to look for innovative reprocessing options that can overcome not only technological challenges but also achieve economic benefits to offset the costs associated with reprocessing the tailings. Moreover, the greater goal is to demonstrate and deploy tailings reprocessing solutions to solve one of the industry’s most difficult challenges for a sustainable mining industry in Canada."

"Nuclear explosions are currently being planned for use in oil and gas production, the recovery of oil from oil shale, gas storage and copper leaching. The current status of each of these projects is discussed, with emphasis on the economics of each application. The first commercial application of nuclear explosives will be in gas stimulation. Project Gasbuggy will be rapidly followed by two additional shots, also related to gas production. These three events, each in a different formation, will be described in this paper with a discussion on their significance to the world's oil and gas industry. The use of nuclear explosives in oil and gas stimulation should be a standard accepted practice within a few years. Calculations based on explosions in media such as tuff, alluvium, granite and dolomite predict large increases in productivity when nuclear devices are used in tight, thick formations. The broken-up rock resulting from the explosion becomes the new well bore, with a production rate of six to twelve times that of a normally completed well.Also included in the paper is a discussion of the real or possible problems associated with nuclear explosive engineering. The only major foreseeable problem is the seismic shock wave. This limits the size of explosive which can be used near important surface structures. A discussion is included on the radiation problem, which we believe to be largely psychological in the case of contained explosions."
