Highwall mining is a highly mechanized coal mining method associated with several advantages, such as a very high production rate (approximately 3,000 t/d) and low production costs. There is no requirement for underground support, ventilation, or blasting. Production leads to added recovery, which is otherwise lost in the ultimate pit. The use of highwall mining can bridge the gap that exists between supply and demand in the energy sector. This paper presents a brief review of highwall mining technology, including current status, analysis tools, and design techniques. In addition, it identifies important parameters from the analysis of failure case studies.

Cupreous pyrite deposits in Cyprus have many geologic similarities to Canadian massive sulphide copper-zinc ores as well as certain significant differences. A comparison of the Cyprus and Canadian deposits indicates a complex genetic history for the latter and suggests that their origin should be re-examined. The Cyprus ores occur in subaqueous extrusive rocks near and at the top of a Cretaceous volcanic pile or igneous complex. The rocks have not been deformed, nor have they been deeply buried or deeply eroded. Apparently the ores formed near or at surface in the top of the volcanic pile by a volcanic-exhalative process and from an ore-fluid of volcanic derivation. The Canadian deposits are of comparable composition and have similar geologic set-tings, but occur in the most ancient Precambrian rocks. Their enclosing Keewatin greenstones have, in most places, been deformed, regionally metamorphosed and invaded by granitic intrusions. Comparison suggests that the Canadian ores also formed initially near surface in ancient Keewatin volcanic complexes by a syngenetic, volcanic-exhalative process. Extraction of gold and other metals from ores suspended in liquid slurries often involves gases (such as oxygen) as a participant in the reaction. An important factor then in setting the rate of extraction can be mass transfer of the gas into the liquid and/or solids. A number of recent studies have indicated that as solids loadings increase, mass transfer rates of gas into solid-liquid mixtures decreases. This would seem to imply that lower solids loadings would be beneficial to increased reaction rates. However, since it is the solids which are being reacted, a most intriguing paradox is created. More solids should lead to more surface area to react, but it seemingly also provides less gas to react. So is the reaction faster or slower as solids loadings increases? The creation of this paradox is imbedded in how mass transfer and reaction data is collected and measured, how it is analyzed and correlated, and finally on the rate controlling steps in the reaction. An alternative analysis of these studies is presented which clarifies and eliminates the paradox. The analysis applies to water slurries as used in gold or other metal leaching processes or in bio-hydrometallurgy, as well as to molten metal/solid/gas mixtures such as might be encountered in submerged gas injection.

The selection of a mining plant for carrying on development work presents many problems distinct in themselves, and affected by various local factors. In this paper, the writer proposes outlining and discussing in some detail the chief factors governing the economic selection of such plants. This will be followed by an enumeration of the underground and surface plant required for carrying on several hypothetical exploratory and mining operations. Where it is impossible or not convenient to obtain hydro-electric power, and where wood for fuel is scarce, we now find oil engines being used. A 100 h.p. oil engine, such as would be required to operate a three-drill air compressor, consumes approximately five Imperial gallons of fuel-oil per hour at full load. On the basis of a 60 per cent load factor, this gives, for eight hours' operation, a probable actual consumption of twenty-four Imperial gallons.

Introduction The Sydney coal-field extends for a distance of thirty miles along the northeastern coast of Cape Breton island. At a central focal point at the tip of the south arm of Sydney harbour, seven miles or so in from the Atlantic ocean, is the city of Sydney, with Port Morien to the southeast and Sydney Mines to the north . Mining centres along the ocean coast between these points include Birchgrove, Reserve, Glace Bay, and Waterford. The field is divided into three districts or 'basins', namely, Morien basin to the south, Glace Bay in the centre, and the Lingan-Sydney Mines basin to the northeast. The eastern and western portions of the latter are known as the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basins, respectively. Six distinct coal seams are described as existing in the Morien basin, nine in the Glace Bay basin, and six in both the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basin. Although known by different names in the several basins, a definite continuity of the seams has been established.

"Virtual reality, a 3D computer-generated environment, has become a recognized delivery system for many forms of education. This paper describes the application of virtual reality to mineral processing education. An interactive mineral processing visualization module developed at the University of New South Wales, Australia, provides users with an overview of a base-metal concentrator and details about how the mined ore progresses through stages in processing. The module also involves developing instructional based plant layouts and flowsheets in the virtual environment. These assist the user in understanding the essential components of the base-metal concentrator.RÉSUMÉ La réalité virtuelle (RV), un environnement en 3D généré par ordinateur, est devenue un système de prestation reconnu pour diverses formes d’éducation. "The otherwise waste heat in many water streams in the mining industry can be used to provide space heating of adjacent infrastructure including laboratories, workshops, and offices. This can be achieved by using heat pump systems, which can work as a replacement or in conjunction with existing space heating. In the example investigated—process cooling streams at an ore smelter—the analysis provided illustrates that annual heating costs can be 19% lower and a simultaneous 62% reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved.RÉSUMÉ Dans l’industrie minière, la chaleur qui serait normalement perdue des circuits d’eau pourrait servir à chauffer des structures adjacentes incluant les laboratoires, les ateliers et les bureaux. Detailed regional geophysical and geochemical surveys, ground surveys and drilling were undertaken to follow-up the federal-provincial Uranium Reconnaissance Program (URP) over the 27,OOO-km2 Kasmere-Munroe area in northwestern Manitoba. An analysis of the URP data showed a fair correlation between the regional airborne radiometric results and lake-bottom geochemical results, both of which also correlated with the regional geology. More detailed surveys defined anomalies with greater precision within the broad zones outlined by the URP. The ground follow-up indicated that URP anomalies can be caused by varying degrees of uranium concentration in the rocks. Mineralization of interest was found in leucogranites at several locations within the survey area. Anomalous uranium concentrations were also found in coarse pegmatites and Hudsonian granitic intrusions. It can be concluded that large-scale regional surveys can be followed up in relatively short periods of time to yield meaningful results if a properly planned exploration sequence is employed, each stage of which successively narrows the area of interest.

Brake testing of large mining trucks was initiated in British. Columbia in 1969 following an accident involving the failure of the service brakes of a l00-ton electric-drive truck. Some selected results of the 1976 brake test program are presented and discussed ?in this paper . The tests were conducted on end- dump trucks having load capacities ranging from 85 to 235 tons. All tests were made with the vehicles fully loaded operating on downhill grades varying from 8 to 10 %. Stopping distances were measured from initial speeds varying between 10 and 39 mph. The results are adequate, in most cases, to determine the "ultimate" capabilities of the service brakes of varying models and sizes of haulage trucks operating in British Columbia mines.

Since the beginning of the nuclear era, there has never been a commercial solution for the large quantities of depleted uranium hexafluoride generated from uranium enrichment. In the United States alone, there is already in excess of 1.6 billion pounds of DUF6 currently stored. INIS is constructing a commercial uranium processing and fluorine extraction facility. The INIS facility will convert depleted uranium hexafluoride and use it as feed material for the patented Fluorine Extraction Process to produce high purity fluoride gases and anhydrous hydrofluoric acid. The project will provide an environmentally friendly and commercially viable solution for DUF6 tails management.

"On the basis that 99% of the energy input into a mill is converted into heat, it is possible to estimate the amount of energy captured in the slurry, the amount that is lost to the environment as well as the possible means to reduce such losses. As a result it becomes possible to estimate the potential amount of energy that can be captured by technologies such as thermoelectric generators or even Sterling engines. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the energy recovery potential dry grinding circuit could be as high as twice that of wet grinding circuits.In this paper, the energy recovery potential of dry grinding will be explored by examining the case of the Newmont Carlin mine dry grinding circuit. The paper will open with a review of the energy recovery potential of a few wet grinding applications followed by a description of the dry grinding circuit and a definition of the control volume around that circuit. A thermodynamic model will be used to estimate the circuit discharge temperature and an estimate of any losses as well as provide an estimate of the potential impact of different means to reduce energy losses. The paper will close with a discussion of the assumptions used in model development."

X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) is used at various stages of gold refining. Initially, incoming impure gold is analysed for deleterious elements such as As, Cd, Hg, Se, and Te. Based on the levels of these impurities the material can be returned to the client or accepted for refining. XRF is also used to determine the metal concentrations after the impure gold has been melted and sampled. This information is used to assist the final Fire Assay determination of gold and silver. An energy dispersive XRF is used to determine the end point of chlorination refining step.

"The history of extractive metallurgy is replete with examples of commercializing new processing technologies. The successes are widely reported, but failures seldom are. This is unfortunate, for usually we can learn more specifics on how to succeed in technology development by studying and thoroughly understanding their failures. Frequently one encounters a red herring that caused the whole effort to fail. A thorough and objective due diligence up front would have identified those red herrings and prevented the pursuit of a bad idea and the resulting destruction of capital. Due diligent analyzes performed before construction of three such bad ideas will be discussed. One is an EAF dust process, which pursued the red herrings of a poor understanding of the business, a naïve view of past experience, and false confidence in the technology. Another will examine the effort to commercialize a new pressure copper leach process that followed the red herrings of inadequate testing of the raw material, application of processing conditions that were inherently unsafe, and an improper assessment of the inherent advantages of past developments. The last is an alternative iron-making process, where the red herrings were incomplete and superficial assessment of prior pilot plant and demonstration plant tests, an assumption that the commercialization model of “build it and we will make it run” was viable, and a technology whose technical fatal flaws had already been identified. Unfortunately, capital destruction often also closes the window to more intelligent pursuit of technology development. TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATIONThe development and commercialization of new technology is a vital part of keeping industry profitable, able to deal with new sorts of feed stocks and current with economic, product, operational and environmental requirements. This is a difficult task in the best of times, and can be compounded when the developers become enamored of a particularly favorable characteristic of the project or of the product. These “red herrings” divert project focus away from the arduous path to success and, in the end, result in project failure."

"High-risk underwater mining operations necessitate characterizing spatial heterogeneity and resource uncertainty. Local average subdivision is a method of simulating spatial deposit variability inside a cell through a sequence of discretization stages, during which a cell is further subdivided into four or eight cells. New developments are presented to validate simulated deposit models and deal with point measurements of geotechnical and ore-grade properties. This paper illustrates the relevance of translating spatial deposit variability into financial or operational performance indicators during underwater resource exploitation. Two synthetic case studies highlight the challenges of underwater mining in relation to production plans and equipment selection.RÉSUMÉ Les opérations d’extraction minière subaquatique à risque élevé exigent une caractérisation de l’hétérogénéité spatiale et de l’incertitude de la ressource. La moyenne locale de subdivision est une méthode de simuler la variabilité spatiale du gisement dans une cellule par une séquence d’étapes de discrétisation durant lesquelles une cellule est subdivisée en quatre ou huit cellules. De nouveaux développements sont présentés afin de valider les modèles de simulation des gisements et de traiter des mesures ponctuelles des propriétés géotechniques et de teneur du minerai. Le présent article illustre la pertinence de traduire la variabilité spatiale du gisement en indicateurs de rendement financier ou opérationnel durant l’exploitation subaquatique de la ressource. "A key step towards sustainability in iron and steelmaking is to optimise the use of raw materials and energy consumption, and consequently minimise CO2 emissions. Models based on a Process Integration (PI) approach play a key role in evaluating various scenarios and the impact of introducing changes in raw materials and operational conditions on the overall energy consumption and CO2 emissions. BlueScope uses a PI based comprehensive model for its Port Kembla Steelworks (PKSW), called the Integrated Steelworks Energy and Emissions Model (ISEEM). ISEEM is tightly coupled to the configuration of PKSW. It is based on mass and energy balances as well as thermodynamic relationships. ISEEM is a steady-state model and is used to predict overall and detailed unit-by-unit energy consumptions and CO2 emissions. It is also used for plant-based scenario modelling. This paper investigates the impact of major changes to PKSW configuration, including the shutting down of a blast furnace and cokemaking battery, on the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of the plant. It discusses some of the issues involved in updating the model and some identified opportunities."

"Résumé - Cette étude porte sur l'altération de la matière organique et des argiles dans les boues carbonatés dévoniennes du facies ""F' de la Formation de Pine Point et ses équivalents stratigraphiques la Formation d'Evie et l'unité bitumineuse de la base de la Fonnation de Hom River. La matière organique se compose principalement de bituré solide et de quelques fragments de fossiles (organaclastes). La majorité des échantillons ne renfement que de l'illite et des inter-stratifiées illite/smectite.Si on compare les températures d'homogénéisation (Th = 100°C) des inclusions fluides de la sphalérite et des dolomites associées a la minéralisation aux températures estimées à partir de la réflectance de la collinite (84°C à 117°C), l'on ne peut pas conclure à la présence d'une anomalie thermique dans le district minier de Pine Point. De plus, la réflectance des organoclastes n'est pas plus élevée dans le district minier de Pine Point que dans les localités plus éloignées des gites. L'analyse des minéraux argileux conduit à la même conclusion: aucune anomalie thermique n'est décelable dans les unités échantillonnées à l'intérieur du district minier de Pine Point quelque soit l'indicateur utilisé.La kaolinite et la matière organique altérée, affichant des valeurs anomales de sa réflectance, se trouve essentiellement en présence de soufre et de sulfures. Cela suggère une origine authigène de la kaolinite et une altération de la matière organique reliées au phénomènes de minéralisation.Abstract - The alteration of organic matter and clays is studied in the Devonian Pine Point Formation carbonate muds, ""F"" facies, and its lateral equivalents the Evie Formation and the bituminous unit at the base of the Hom River Formation. The organic matter is mainly composed of solid bitumen with few fossil fragments (organoclasts). Most samples contain only illite and mixed layer illite/smectite.If we compare the Th (100°C) from fluid inclusions of sphalerite and dolomites associated with mineralization to the temperatures calculated from the reflectance (Ro) of the collinite (84°C to 117°C), we cannot detect a thermal anomaly in the Pine Point mining district. This result is based on the reflectance values of organoclasts from the mining district that are not higher than those reflectance values measured on organic matter (OM) away from the ore deposit. A similar conclusion is reached from the clay study: none of the parameters used allow us to identify a thermal anomaly in the samples from the mining district.The kaolinite and the altered OM showing anomalous Ro values mainly occur with sulfides and sulfur. This association suggests an authigenic origin for the kaolinite and an alteration of the OM due to the mineralization events."
