The purpose of this paper is to present the methods used in ground water control and the considerations that affected the development of these techniques. Production at Knob Lake is currently proceeding at depths which may be as much as 200 feet below the original standing water table. In order to produce a more saleable product and to improve operating and maintenance conditions, it is necessary to depress the water table below the mining level. Considerable success has been achieved by drilling deep wells in strategic locations and installing vertical tur-bine pumps at depths of up to 400 feet. This method is especially suitable for operation under severe winter conditions and has reduced the detrimental effects by a far greater extent than other methods of water control, Spring runoff is handled in open sumps, but all other water from four mines, with flows exceeding 16,000 g.p.m., is pumped all year 'round from about thirty-five wells. The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of varibles, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. The development of welded pipe has paralleled the general industrial development and, in particular, that of the petroleum industry. The petroleum industry's need for high-grade, economical pipeline material to make many 'of its projects feasible has been a significant factor in the development of light-wall, high-grade welded pipe. The modern welding processes, such as high-frequency, electric resistance, flash, submerged arc, etc., have some basically different characteristics. The modern high-frequency weld mill is a complex of specialized equipment that is integrated into a production unit. Each component in the unit performs a specific function in the production process. Quality control must be built into the process on an operating basis and, to maintain the quality required for pipeline standards, must be more than a policing operation. The further development of the welded pipe industry will be determined by changing and increasing demands. The technical and economic views and requirements that will influence the development have to be resolved.

In September, 1953, seismographs were installed in the Crowsnest Pass area of Alberta and British Columbia to study the 'bumps' which were occurring in the coal mines at Fernie and Coleman, and to investigate the possibility that they might be related to minor earthquakes in the area. During the initial phase of the work, three seismographs were operated at widely separated stations, two in the region of coal mines at Coal Creek and Coleman and one at Turner Valley, distant from any mining operations. Some earthquakes were recorded at all three stations and, in addition, many small disturbances were recorded by the seismographs located near the mines, especially -by the instrument at Goal Greek. A closer network of radio-linked seismographs was then in-stalled near Fernie, the records of which definitely established that the small disturbances were occurring in the mine workings, both active and inactive. No relationship was established between bumps and local earth-quakes in the area. This work was initiated as a -co-operative effort with the Fuels Di-vision of the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, which has undertaken a study into the phenomena of ground stress relief in underground mine workings.

Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the few years. Accidents rates are at a ?plateau? and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas disaster, organizations that have ?exemplary? safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Other classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA?s Challenger and Columbia disasters and even the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Looking into the root causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization?s mindset? What characterizes these organizations? decision making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there specific cultural features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since 1994, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions, based on extensive research since 1997 of organizations that suffered unexpected disasters. Their huge focus on safety, the achievement of lofty goals and celebration of safety successes led to ?mindset? that they are leaders in safety, protected by an extraordinary safety system and that their safety incident figures indicated a truly world-class safety performance. It led them into the trap of the seven deadly delusions?

Abstract- Agrium Inc. is a world leader in the production, distribution, and marketing of agricultural products and services in both North America and Argentina. The new phosphate mine and mill complex located southwest of Kapuskasing, Ontario, was constructed to replace an offshore supply of phosphate rock, and produces a high-grade phosphate concentrate. The Cargill Township Carbonatite Complex is one of a series of carbonatite complexes in the region that are hosted by the 1.9 Ga aged Kapuskasing Structural Zone. The carbonatites in the mine area have intruded Archean gneissic granodiorite rocks of the Wawa Subprovince, and metasedimentary rocks of the Quetico Subprovince. The Cargill Carbonatite Complex displays a typical concentric zonation pattern from an outer ring of alkalic pyroxenites, through an inner ring of sövite-carbonatite, to a central core of rauhaugite-carbonatite. The initial carbonatite intrusion and subsequent residual orebody have been modified by faulting such that the northwestern third of the complex has been displaced approximately 2.5 km northeast. The phosphate ores are composed principally of residual apatite sands that were formed by the weathering and dissolution of the soluble minerals of the carbonatite protolith. These ores are subdivided by their iron content into high grade (A ores) and lower grade (B1 and B2) ores. They are separated from the primary unweathered carbonatite by a layer of saprolite, whose thickness varies depending upon the composition of the underlying carbonatite. Cretaceous waste materials consisting of well-sorted silica/kaolinite sand and peat deposits are typically found to stratigraphically overlie the ores. A minor amount of the ore feed comes from cemented phosphate ores. All rock types are covered by Pleistocene glacial tills and clays.

"Abstract - The 12.1 Mt Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposit (New Brunswick, Canada) lies between two subaqueous felsic volcanic formations near the base of the Middle Ordovician Tetagouche Group. The footwall comprises rhyodacitic pyroclastic rocks (Nepisiguit Falls Formation), whereas the hanging wall comprises a sequence of rhyolitic flows, breccias, and hyaloclastites (Flat Landing Brook Formation), with an age difference of less than 3 m.y. The Brunswick No. 6 deposit is a proximal autochthonous deposit with a well-zoned massive sulfide body and a basal Cu zone that, at depth, develops into a stockwork stringer sulfide (feeder) system. The massive sulfides are capped sharply by a layered magnetite-chert unit that extends regionally beyond the deposit. The deposit has a keel shape (sheath) formed by the F1F2 interference pattern. The heterogeneous ductile deformation and upper greenschist-grade regional metamorphism has transposed many of the epigenetic stockwork structures and alteration within the host sequence. Hydrothermal alteration is much more extensive, both vertically and laterally, in the footwall (a few 100 m) than in the hanging wall (<100 m). Anomalies farther up in the hanging wall sequence seem to be associated with independent alteration systems related to the rhyolite domes. The least-altered footwall units exhibit keratophyric alteration (albite or adularia) and weak Mg enrichment (chlorite). More intense micaceous (sericite and Mg-rich chlorite) alteration occurs around the footwall sequence. The transposed stockwork stringer sulfides are typically composed of Fe-rich chlorite (± sericite, ± silica) with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and sphalerite. The (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) and base metal alteration indices are the best practical lithogeochemical vectoring tools at this deposit. Le mur consiste en roches pyroclastiques rhyodacitiques (Formation de Nepisiguit Falls) tandis que le toit consiste en une séquence de coulées, de brèches et d’hyaloclastites de composition rhyolitique (Formation de Flat Landing Brook); la différence d’âge entre les deux est de moins de 3 m.y. Plusieurs des structures épigénétiques du stockwork et des patrons d’altération de l’encaissant ont été transposés par la déformation ductile hétérogène ainsi que par le métamorphisme régional au faciès des schistes verts. L’altération hydrothermale est beaucoup plus importante, tant verticalement qu’horizontalement, dans le mur (quelques 100 m) que dans le toit (<100 m). Les anomalies situées plus haut dans le mur semblent être reliées à des systèmes d’altération indépendants associés aux dômes de rhyolite. Les unités les moins altérées du mur une altération kératophyrique (en albite ou en adulaire) ainsi qu’un faible enrichissement en Mg (chlorite). Une altération en mica (séricite et chlorite magnésienne) plus intense est présente autour de la séquence du mur. Les sulfures du stockwork de filonnets transposés consistent typiquement en chlorite ferrifère (± séricite, ± silice) accompagnée de pyrite, de pyrrhotite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite et de sphalérite. L’indice d’altération (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) et l’indice des métaux usuels sont les outils d’exploration les plus appropriés dans ce gisement."

"Recent fluid inclusion and stable isotopic studies in the Bousquet mining district have identified spatial and temporal trends in mineralization temperatures and isotopic compositions of vein forming fluids. These studies indicate that mineralizing temperatures were lower during sterile vein formation (T=200-300°C) than during auriferous vein formation (T = 300-400°C), and that 8 80 values of minerals in sterile veins are lower by 1-3 %o than in associated auriferous veins. In addition to these small differences in 8 80 within individual mineralized zones, a trend of increasing 8 80 values of vein minerals is identified from west to east across the district, with 8 80 of vein minerals increasing by4-6%o. Quantitative evaluation of potential causes of the observed oxygen isotopic shifts suggests that the best explanation for these trends is the derivation of the mineralizing fluids from an isotopically inhomogeneous terrain in which the fluid isotopic compositions are controlled by the isotopic compositions of the host lithologies due to high rock/water ratios in these source terrains. This inhomogeneous source terrain is interpreted as consisting of the Blake River Group volcanics (low 8 80 component) and the adjoining Kewagama and Cadillac Group sediments (high 8 80 component).The genesis of the hydrothermal fluids is attributed to crustal heating during metamorphism, with the fluids representing metamorphic dewatering products and/or fluids incorporated during deposition and burial of the host lithologies. Ductile deformation of the fluid source regions impeded fluid migration during metamorphism; the ultimate release of the mineralizing fluids is attributed to the penetration to depth of vertical structures (fault and shear zones) during brittle deformation of the crust under waning metamorphic conditions. Release of fluids caused by this puncturing of the closed hydrologic source regime produced a localized zone of lowered pressure, drawing fluids from adjacent lithologies toward the fault zones, feeding further hydrothermal fluid upwelling. Au mineralization resulted from chemical processes related to cooling of the hydrothermal fluids and/or interaction with lithologies encountered during fluid migration; the level of crust at which Au deposition occurred likely migrated upward with the thermal anomaly caused by hydrothermal fluid upwelling, eventually reaching the level of current exploitation. Cessation of fluid flow along the vertical structures is attributed to inadequate recharge of the hydrothermal systems as fluid contents were depleted in the lithologies proximal to the vertical structures and/or sealing of the structures by mineral deposition."

"In order to improve the properties of cast Ti-Al alloys to replace Ni-based superalloys past the low pressure stages of aircraft engines investigations into inoculation for grain refinement were carried out. Previous work showed isomorphic self-inoculation using Ti-Al-Nb particles was effective for grain refinement, however the relatively fast diffusion of Nb in Ti-Al make it difficult to observe the mechanism of nucleation. An alternative alloy was developed in the Ti-Ta system for isomorphic self-inoculation, maximizing the Ta content to improve the particles survivability in the melt. The powder processing produced comparatively small inoculant particles which dissolved, however larger particles were seen to survive solidification. The density difference between the inoculant particles and melt resulted in an inhomogeneous mixing of the particles and the melt with larger particles found near the outer edges of the ingots. Variations on particle size and interaction time between the inoculants and the melt resulted in the Ti-Ta inoculant reducing the as-cast equiaxed grain size by a factor of two compared to non-inoculated samples as well as increasing the equiaxed fraction in the ingot.INTRODUCTION Lightweight metals are of particular interest in aerospace applications. The hot sections of turbines are dominated by blades made of nickel based superalloys. Recently the GEnx turbine introduced TiAl blades in the last low pressure stage of the turbine to reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency (Kim & Dimiduk, 1991). In order to carry these benefits deeper into the turbine the high temperature (>800oC) properties of the alloys must be improved. Current grain refinement methods to improve properties rely on boron additions which may not be applicable for all blades as brittle precipitates may be formed during processing (McCullough, Levi, Mehrabian, & Hyman, 1991). A novel grain refinement process was previously introduced called “isomorphic self-inoculation” using Ti-Al-Nb particles to successfully grain refine TiAl (Kennedy, Zollinger, Bouzy, & Daloz, 2016). In order to better understand the mechanism of this process an investigation was carried out using the same process but with a Ti-Ta alloy which is more stable in the TiAl melt than the Ti-Al-Nb."

The rate of new mineral discoveries in Canada has been declining in the last two decades. In response to the challenge and to stagnating investments in mining-related R&D, twenty Industry partners, supported by PDAC and Natural Resources Canada, established in 2010 the Exploration Innovation Consortium (EIC). This Consortium seeks to promote the discovery of new resources in Canada through coordination and sponsorship of industry-focused innovative and collaborative research and technology development, as well as training and education in mineral exploration. The two main themes of the integrated R&D program focus on exploration targeting in Deep and Mature Environments and in Remote and Covered Terranes.

Availability of the production equipment used in underground mines has a substantial impact on production costs and, thus, on mine profitability. Appropriate collection of pertinent data and information, as well as use of adequate performance measures and their analyses, can help mine operators identify cost-effective opportunities to improve equipment availability. This paper presents study results aimed at reviewing and analyzing means and measures used to quantify equipment availability and its contributing factors (reliability, maintainability and maintenance support) in several Canadian underground mines. It overviews sources, as well as quality and quantity of relevant data and information, and examines performance measures and their definitions, as applied to surveyed mines. Problems concerning data acquisition and meaningfulness of the performance measures are discussed. The paper concludes with some suggestions and recommendations concerning several aspects of equipment availability assessment. Evidence suggests that the latter may become a more useful tool for mine operators in their efforts to reduce production cost.

La Mine Louvicourt est une mine hautement mécanisée exploitant un gisement polymétallique avec des chantiers transversaux minés et remblayés selon une séquence primaire-secondaire. Dans certaines parties du gisement, il n&apos;y avait qu&apos;un accès à la coupe inférieure, car il n&apos;était pas rentable d&apos;avoir aussi un accès par coupe supérieure. Le minerai situé au-dessus des chantiers avec trous ascendants était considéré comme ressource non rentable par minage mécanisé. L&apos;option de miner ces ressources avec des sous-niveaux avec accès par monterie alimak et forage long-trous de petit diamètre fût donc étudiée et démontra une rentabilité intéressante, particulièrement en considérant les tonnes ainsi minées comme tonnage supplémentaire au tonnage planifié. Dans ces chantiers, les détonateurs électroniques ont été très utiles et de plus, les coûts d&apos;explosifs ont étés réduits considérablement par l&apos;utilisation d&apos;émulsion pompée en vrac.

Synthetic fuel is a liquid hydrocarbon fuel synthesized from unconventional resources, such as tar sands, heavy oil, coal, and oil shale. These unconventional resources are immense and will be a major energy source for the 21st Century as the availability of conventional crude oil and natural gas declines. The authors review the available global distributions, production data, research frontiers, and current research organizations involved in tar sands, heavy oil, coal, and oil shale. Tar sands and heavy oil is mainly deposited in Canada, Venezuela, and the United States. Oil shale reserves are found in United States, Jordan, China and Australia. Coal occurs in United States, Russia, China, Canada, and Australia. Major research and development efforts are focused on reserves identification, transportation technologies, production cost modeling, bitumen extraction process improvements, coal liquefaction technologies, elimination of pollutants, greenhouse gases, and safeguarding human health and the environment. This review forms a major source for educating the public about these important energy sources, and the need to develop environmentally sound technologies and policies for their extraction.

"Roof bolts are subjected to axial stresses, shear stresses, or both. Axial and shear stresses were compared between roof bolts machined with two and three slots. Shear stresses perpendicular to and at an angle to the shear planes were evaluated by analyzing a three-slot instrumented roof bolt, performing laboratory tests on two- and three-slot roof bolts, and conducting in-situ test analyses. Threeslot bolts appear to provide a complete bending strain profile, requiring no prior knowledge of the estimated shear-plane orientation. Minimum displacements occur in roof bolts installed perpendicular to rather than at an angle to the shear planes.RÉSUMÉ Les boulons d’ancrage dans le toit d’une mine sont sujets à des contraintes axiales, des contraintes de cisaillement ou les deux. On a comparé les contraintes axiales et de cisaillement de boulons d’ancrage usinés avec deux ou trois fentes. Les contraintes de cisaillement perpendiculaires et à angle aux plans de cisaillement ont été évaluées en analysant un boulon d’ancrage de toit à trois fentes, en effectuant des essais en laboratoire sur des boulons d’ancrage de toit à deux et à trois fentes et en effectuant des analyses de tests in situ. Les boulons à trois fentes semblent fournir un profil complet de résistance aux contraintes de flexion, sans avoir besoin de connaître l’orientation estimée du plan de cisaillement. Daring to try where others had failed, Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover translated from the Latin the principal (and first) textbook on the mining and metallurgical profession, De Re Metallica, 1556, which had been in use for two centuries and then had lain dormant for 350 years in a language unreadable except by a chosen few. Thus the Hoovers enriched the English tongue with a vitally important contribution to history in the fields of mining, metallurgy, and chemistry. To them it was a joint hobby, because they were actively interested in the beginnings of the mining profession in which they had both been trained. Illuminating the years of toil to perfect this translation shone their ideal of service to humanity, since, in the Preface, they refer to their task as "a labour of love", which had to find the moments for its execution in night hours, weekends, and holidays, extending over a period of about five years. And they add: "If the work serves to strengthen the traditions of one of the most important and least recognized of the world&apos;s professions, we shall be amply repaid". While a student at Stanford University, during the years of 1891-95, Herbert Hoover had become familiar with a copy of this Latin mineralogy classic, De Re Metallica, a rare book in the private library of Dr. John C. Branner, at that time head of the department of geology and mining. Another Stanford student in geology was also examining and studying the ponderous volume of twelve &apos;books&apos;. She was Miss Lou Henry, of Monterey, who graduated in 1898, and the following year became Mrs. Herbert Hoover. Interwoven through the tapestry of their life experiences gleamed the silver thread of their interest in this mediaeval Latin textbook. Just nine years lacer, the Hoovers had commenced their translation, while they were in temporary residence in London after the seething years in China under the shadow of the Boxer rebellion.

This technology, originally employed in South Africa, received some interest from Canadian mine operators. In this context a comparative experimental study of pneumatic and hydraulic (oil- and water-powered) jackleg drills has been realized. The performance of the drills is compared and the results reviewed with regards to technical aspects (penetration rate, amount of water spilled) as well as health and safety considerations (noise and vibration level, presence of oil mist). The potential for application of hydraulic jackleg drill is discussed."

Introduction Under our present civilization, industrial developments will be greatest in those areas in which energy .can be most economically produced and efficiently used, where labour is in adequate supply, and where markets for the products of industry are available. A knowledge of fuels- the present major sources of energy- and of their utilization is therefore of vital importance. With that in mind, the aim in this paper will be to outline the known reserves of fuels in Alberta, to give their characteristics, to indicate the markets served by each, and to offer some suggestions for the future development of the coal industry. The paper should be regarded as a compilation of published data rather than as an original treatise. Alberta is richly blessed by having large reserves of mineral fuels. The estimated reserves of coal are 46,562 million tons. Alberta is the oil and gas province of Canada. The world&apos;s largest deposit of bituminous sand occurs along the Athabaska river in Alberta. In addition, there are large areas of forested land in the northern and western sections of the Province, and the rivers serve for the development of hydro-power.

La voie hydrométallurgique traite le concentré par lixiviation, c.à.d. par dissolution en phase aqueuse à température typiquement inférieure à 100 ou 150⁰C, alors que la voie pyrométallurgique traite le concentré par fusion à température de l’ordre de 1200 à 1300⁰C.
