The paper addresses five questions concerning the economic of gold exploration in the western Canadian shield. Can historical footprints be used to project future gold prices for exploration planning? Experience suggests that gold price forecast are too clo ely tied to current market events to provide meaningful guidelines. What range of breakeven gold price will typically be required to ju tify gold exploration in Canada? Minimum price requirements. initially asses ed at $540 to $1080 per ounce, probably lie in the range of $480 to $760 per ounce (expressed in 1985 Canadian dollar). Within Canada, what role do regional conditions and taxation policies play in determining the viability of prospective gold exploration targets? Striking interprovincial differences are found to exist, given the same geological circum tance -Nova Scotia, ew Brunswick, and Quebec rank towards the top in term of motivating exploration, Briti h Columbia provides the least investment incentive, while Saskatchewan and Manitoba place around the middle of the Canadian league. How can minimum acceptable tonnage-grade conditions for gold targets in the western shield be established and, then, constructively applied to provide exploration planning guidelines? Minimum target conditions, realis tically defined in terms of a broad band of doubt, can be used judiciously to help balance the direct costs of uneconomic exploration with the opportunity costs associated with rejecting economic deposits. How does the average cost per ounce of gold discovered in the western shield compare with the overall Canadian experience? Average discovery costs for the we tern shield, apprai ed at $100 per ounce, are shown to compare favourably with the Canada-wide record.

"A number of successful proof-of-concept projects have been carried out to replace conventional power application, such as diesel and rechargeable batteries, in underground mine vehicles. This has led to the development and testing of the world’s first fuel cell production vehicle, a mine locomotive. A fuel cell loader is being built and tested.This paper provides an insight into other projects that are being carried out. Some are related to further underground applications, and some to further research, such as refueling options, power plant durability, and vehicle automation.Also outlined is an evaluation of the overall mining applications and advantages this technology can bring to underground mining, including the facilitation of automation and tele-remote operation."

"At first glance, the activities related to mining and mineral exploration appear to be local or domestic, rather than international, in nature. Minerals, as corporeal or tangible property, form an integral part of the land in which they are found until extracted and exploited commercially. Even in the latter phase, the tangible nature of minerals gives the impression that the law governing the commercialization of minerals is the law of their situs at any given time. The nature of minerals appears to negate the international aspect of mineral enterprises.The fundamental flaw in the above analysis is its focus upon the nature of minerals, rather than the role of persons in mineral enterprises. The high costs of mineral exploration and commercialization invariably require the involvement of international consortiums or joint ventures. Governments may not have access to the funds necessary to exploit the mineral resources that they control. Local or domestic enterprises may not have sufficient expertise for mineral exploration. Further, markets for various types of minerals are far from localized or static. For these and other reasons, the tangible and localized nature of minerals belies the fundamentally international nature of mineral exploration and commercialization."

"The Bui/moose Mine is in the northeast coal area of British Columbia, and less than $300 million was spent to bring this 2.3 million-tonnes-per-year metallurgical and thermal coal mine into production by November 1, 1983, one month ahead of schedule. The project is an unincorporated joint venture undertaking, with Teck-Bullmoose Coal Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Teck Corporation, holding 51%, Lornex Mining Corporation holding 39%, and Nissho-lwai (Canada) Ltd. holding 10%. Bullmoose Operating Corporation will be the manager and operator of the project. This paper will broadly cover the history and exploration work on the property, the geology, open-pit mining plans and equipment, the preparation plant flowsheet from breaker station to clean coal silo, the 35 km highway truck haul, the railroad loadout system, manpower requirements, approvals and permits, and general financial arrangements. Introduction The Bullmoose Mine Project is located about 87 km by road south of Chetwynd, B.C. and consists of an open-pit coal mine, a plant facility in the Bullmoose Creek valley below the mine, and a separate rail loadout facility on the British Columbia Railway Branchline near the new town of Tumbler Ridge some 35 km by road to the east. The plant will be capable of producing a total of 2.3 million tonnes per year (mty) of washed metallurgical and thermal coal. Long-term metallurgical coal contracts for high-quality, medium-volatile, bituminous coal have been signed with nine Japanese buyers for 1.7 mty, and the balance of0.6 mty will be for thermal coal production. Plant construction began in the spring of 1982, and in May 1983, preproduction waste and overburden removal in the mine was started. The plant began tuning up in October and was fully operational by December 1983. Metallurgical coal began moving to the coast in unit trains during November, and first vessel loading at the Ridley Island port began in late December 1983."

"In recent years, the mining industry has been inundated with new technologies and software systems to aid in productivity improvement. Accompanying this increased level of technology and computer systems has been the exponential growth in data sources and sinks for all aspects of a mining operation. This rapid growth in data and technology has evolved through vendor “push” approaches and user “pull” scenarios, the result of which has been that currently, no standards exist defining how data from new technology should be accessed and transferred from surface mining equipment and systems. Consequently, many incremental benefits of the systems have not been realized. This paper will present a discussion of this important issue and introduce a new committee formed to address standards to assist the industry in making effective use of current and future technology. Potential benefits accruing from the development of these standards will be illustrated through the use of a case study at Fording Coal Limited. IntroductionThe mining industry is currently faced with a rapid evolution in the computing-based systems capabilities of mobile production equipment. At the same time, there is a trend toward the introduction of even larger machines, with novel designs or incorporation of new technologies within existing designs. Computing and control technology will be required to operate and acquire knowledge about equipment operation, utilization, and performance. Such knowledge has the potential to lead to enhanced equipment design, more appropriate equipment selection, and optimized equipment performance. The equipment systems will be required to be integrated with mine production monitoring systems, maintenance management software, and a wealth of other information systems to provide a complete understanding of the effects of various factors such as maintenance, equipment design and production on economics (Roman and Daneshmend, 2001). This will lead to a better understanding and implementation of the opportunities to enhance the performance of the mine through interaction of the mine operations."

I N the introductory chapter to "Man and Metals," T. A. Rickard wrote "Five hundred thousand years ago the first footfalls of man's oncoming echoed down the corridors of time." This phrase has always appealed to me, not only for its resonance but because it seems to place in some perspective man's place in the cosmos. As we go about our daily occupations and as we meet here tonight, we must agree that we have come a long way slowly at first through the ages of change but with a quickening pace that has brought to man's know-ledge and use, within the last hundred years, more ideas, more material advantages, more opportunities and more comforts than were ever imagined or dreamed of in those long corridors of time. Looking back to the dawn of his-tory, a mere five thousand years ago, there is one aspect of the birth and growth of civilization that has particular significance for the miner and the metallurgist.

"Abstract - North American Palladium Ltd. operates its Lac des Iles open pit palladium mine 85 km north of the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Roby Zone deposit occurs within the mafic/ultramafic Lac des Iles Intrusive Complex (LDI-IC), which was created by multiple pulses of magma of varying composition within several closely spaced chambers. Chaotic lithological distribution, the presence of magmatic breccias, and the rarity of rhythmic layering suggest a dynamic intrusive environment with disruptive magma pulses. As of December 31, 2001, measured and indicated resources for the 950 m long by 815 m wide Roby Zone deposit totalled 159 Mt grading 1.55 g/t Pd, 0.17 g/t Pt, 0.12 g/t Au, 0.05% Cu, and 0.05% Ni at a palladium cut-off grade of 0.7 g/t. The Roby Zone contains an additional 73 Mt of inferred resources at similar grades.The Roby Zone is dominated by varitextured gabbro containing pipes and pods of breccia, and large blocks (~60 m across) of varying lithology. Mineralization at Lac des Iles occurs as: (1) a PGEand base metal-rich magmatic matrix of breccia (breccia ore); (2) mineralized dikes or sills (gabbronorite in North Roby ore); (3) lower-grade mineralization in varitextured units that are host to the distinctive breccia ore and envelope the North Roby ore; and (4) high-grade mineralization associated with strong silicate alteration exemplified by high-grade ore.The close spatial association of the mineralized breccias with both varitextured units and silicate alteration leads to an interpretation that the energetic magma that created breccia was charged with a dissolved fluid, and that this deuteric fluid exsolved at high temperatures to migrate through crystal mush, enhancing crystallization along its pathways, resulting in variable grain size. This transformation occurred at high temperature and produced sulfide-poor, varitextured gabbro-hosted mineralization exemplified by some of the mineralization in the North Roby Zone, and also found throughout the Roby Zone. The association of hydrous silicate alteration with mineralization can be explained by continuing fluid migration during cooling and continued metal transport. De plus, la Roby Zone contient 73 millions de tonnes de ressources inférées à une teneur similaire.La Roby Zone est principalement encaissée dans un gabbro de texture hétérogène (varitextured) caractérisé par des cheminées et des lentilles de brèches et des énormes blocs (environ 60 m de diamètre) de plusieurs lithologies. Au Lac des Iles, la minéralisation en EGP et en métaux de base se retrouve dans la matrice magmatique de brèches (breccia ore), dans des dykes ou des sills minéralisés (gabbronorite dans la zone North Roby ore), comme minerai de basse teneur encaissant le minerai de brèche (breccia ore) et enveloppant la zone North Roby. In this study, the effect of using conventional crushing and high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) in combination with dry or wet milling was investigated using a base-metal sulphide (BMS) sphalerite and a platinum group mineral (PGM) ore to determine how these processes affect the flotation performance. In sphalerite, irrespective of the crushing procedure (HPGR or conventional), dry milling resulted in the highest grades and recoveries of zinc, whereas in PGMs, similar treatment produced the poorest results. The results were investigated further by the effect of factors such as percentage liberation and particle size on the flotation results.

"In the production of high quality steel, the understanding of the interactions between liquid steel and refractories and of their effect on steel purity and cleanness are becoming more and more important.An experimental study has been per-formed in order to estimate the importance of the reaction between a MgO-based tundish refractory and an Al-killed steel. The results show a pollution of the liquid steel:•the silicon content of the liquid steel increases due to the reduction of the silica of the refractory by the aluminum contained in the steel; and•a reoxidation of the steel occurs and the formation of an oxide layer on the refracto-ry, mainly composed of spinel crystals and of Ca-aluminates is observed.The transfer mechanisms of the various elements are analyzed."

"Drillhole placement involves benefits, costs, and constraints. Benefits are related to the drilling campaign value, which includes maximizing “indicated” and “measured” resources. Costs include drilling, rig movement, and access construction. Constraints include infeasible areas, maximum and minimum angles of drilling, maximum depth of drilling, and budget. Manually planning drillholes that meet these constraints is suboptimal. A framework for straight drillhole optimization that accounts for benefits, costs, and constraints is presented. The method aims to maximize the value of resources converted from “inferred” to indicated and measured. The framework is demonstrated for a Nevada gold deposit and outperforms manually selected drillholes.RÉSUMÉ Le choix de l’emplacement d’un trou de forage s’accompagne d’avantages, de coûts et de contraintes. Les avantages sont liés à la valeur d’une campagne de forage, qui comprend l’optimisation des ressources « indiquées » et « mesurées ». Les coûts englobent le forage, le déplacement de l’appareil de forage et la construction des routes d’accès. Quant aux contraintes, elles portent sur les zones impraticables, les angles maximums et minimums de forage, la profondeur maximale de forage ainsi que le budget. La planification manuelle des trous de forage répondant à ces contraintes est sous-optimale. Cet article présente un cadre relatif à l’optimisation des trous verticaux de forage tenant compte des avantages, des coûts et des contraintes. Cette méthode vise à optimiser la valeur des ressources converties de la phase « ressources présumées » à celle de « ressources indiquées et mesurées ». Ce cadre est appliqué à un gisement aurifère du Nevada et donne de meilleurs résultats que les trous de forage sélectionnés manuellement. "Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited utilizes pressure hydro-metallurgical techniques to recover nickel, copper and cobalt from su1phidic concentrates, mattes and various other metal-bearing materials.A brief description of the nickel refinery operation is given. In the nickel refinery process, an ammonia pressure leach is employed to treat the feed materials to dissolve the non-ferrous metals as their respective ammine complexes. The resulting leach solution goes through a series of steps which removes copper as copper sulphide and further purifies the solution prior to nickel precipitation by hydrogen reduction. The reduction end solution, containing the cobalt which was originally present in the leach solution as well as residual nickel, is treated with hydrogen sulphide. The resulting nickel-cobalt sulphide precipitate feeds the soluble cobaltic ammine process, which separates the nickel and cobalt and recovers the cobalt as a pure powder.A detailed description of the cobalt recovery process is given. Included are the various steps, comprising: acid leaching of the mixed sulphides, solution purification, ammine complex formation and cobaltous oxidation, two-stage nickel precipitation, cobalt conversion and reduction. A brief description of cobalt powder handling is included, along with typical physical properties and chemical analyses of the cobalt product. In general, the purpose of this paper is to describe the present plant practices employed in the recovery of cobalt as a by-product of the nickel refinery operations."

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. Le tri granulométrique du minerai offre une plus-value intéressante en termes de traitement du minerai à plus faible teneur extrait des mines ; il permet par ailleurs l’acheminement vers le concentrateur de minerai à plus haute teneur et la revalorisation des stériles dans le minerai. On met généralement l’accent sur la susceptibilité du minerai au triage et sur les réductions connexes en termes d’utilisation de l’énergie, de l’eau et de biens consommables. Cependant, l’aménagement physique de l’équipement a une incidence non négligeable sur le coût installé d’une usine de concentration, et les répercussions sur l’aménagement de l’installation d’un circuit de triage du minerai dans l’usine doivent être soigneusement examinées. The Mining industry faces many challenges, one of which is the demand to communicate over a variety of media, be it visual, sound, voice, data or any combination. Over the years multiple infrastructures have been put in place to overcome environmental obstacles and address these communication needs. A mine is an aggressive environment for electronic equipment and as such only the best quality equipment can perform under those special conditions of e.g. temperature, dust and humidity. Siemens Canada and its partner LComm will discuss a mining solution using a unique combination of technologies based on fibre optics, standard communication interfaces, passive antenna infrastructure and wireless services. The presentation looks at maximizing the use of infrastructure, reducing costs, addressing difficulty of communications coverage above and below the surface and the capability to future proof the capital investment as new requirements and applications are identified. ABSTRACTA series of algorithms were developed to perform geometric and kinematic analyses of cable shovel dipper-ground interactions for a given set of mining face conditions. The routines examine and analyze (a) the position of the dipper in relation to the shovel; (b) the dipper in relation to the face conditions; (c) the dipper position in relation to possible interference or collision with crawler tracks during digging cycles; and (d) kinematic and geometric considerations with respect to any point on the dip-per as it conducts a duty cycle. In all cases, field measurement verifcation provided good agreement(within 4% variance).

"Aqueous slurries of fine particle size calcium carbonate are used in a diverse range of end-use products. In many cases, the end-use performance is governed by the fineness of the particle size distribution. In turn, the maximum fineness of the particle size distribution is primarily determined by the efficiency of the dispersants used during the production process. Here, we report the sodium polyacrylate mediated dispersion of calcite and kaolin. Firstly, we report a colloid chemical description of the dispersant behaviour and attribute the stabilization to both steric and electrostatic mechanisms. Secondly, we describe how the understanding developed in the first part of the study can be utilized to produce more effective dispersant systems which allow the preparation of added value, higher solids and finer particle size calcium carbonate slurry products. IntroductionConcentrated aqueous dispersions of fine particulate kaolin and calcium carbonate are used extensively in the coating of paper. Currently, more than 10 Mt of such dispersions are used annually in North America and Europe alone, and worldwide consumption is growing at around 3% per year.Generally, paper is coated to enhance its visual appearance. Firstly, coatings improve the optical properties of the blank sheet, i.e., its brightness (or whiteness), opacity and gloss. Secondly, they improve the physical properties of the sheet that will influence the quality of the final printed image, such as surface smoothness, porosity, and ink absorption. In order to achieve these aims economically, paper coatings must be applied at high speeds and with minimal drying costs.Kaolin and calcium carbonate pigments are the major components of most paper coating formulations. Particle size distributions are chosen to maximize the optical benefits that they confer, and to allow the production of formulations that can be easily pumped, handled and coated. Coating pigments are generally produced and transported as slurries, and so it is important to obtain dispersions with the highest possible solids content, both to minimize drying costs and the quantity of water transported. This paper examines the dispersant technology that is currently used in the industry and the mechanisms by which it functions, and illustrates ways in which this technology has developed and could be further improved in the future."

Introduction Extensive undersea coal-mining has developed on both the east and west coasts of Canada, and at this time some four million tons, or 25 per cent of the total output of Canadian coal, representing a pit-mouth value of $14,000,000 per annum, is coming from coal seams lying under the sea. Of the coal now being mined in Nova Scotia, 55 per cent comes from under the sea, and this proportion is likely to increase. The Province of Nova Scotia is at this date receiving in royalties paid upon coal ?removed from undersea areas a sum exceeding $400,000 per annum. The subject is, therefore, one of special interest to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, and while this paper will deal chiefly with undersea coal-mining in Nova Scotia, an attempt has been made to summarize the development of mining practice in the winning of undersea coal in other parts of the world, with the hope that such a recital may assist in the assessment of local problems. The connection between the mining of coal under the sea and an insular or maritime geography is obvious in regard to Great Britain, Japan, Vancouver Island, Australia, and Cape Breton Island, and also in regard to the curious conformation of Chile; the tendency towards growth of a mercantile marine and naval eminence is equally obvious where coal is mined at tidewater. But, there is the further and less favourable significance that the mining of coal under the sea is associated with poverty rather than with abundance of coal reserves.
