After the closure of mines they naturally start to fill up with water. As a result, hydraulic gradients develop between adjacent mines and different hydraulic water pressures are exerted onto peripheral areas or compartments within mines. This results in water flow between mines, or onto the surface. This flow is referred to as intermine flow. The geometry of the collieries in the central Witbank Coalfield make intermine flow possible in several areas. Since the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry declared intermine flow as one of its greatest concerns for granting closure to South African mines, much research into this phenomenon has been undertaken. The importance of the quantification lies in the DepartmentÆs goal of sustainable water management, and the possible long-term financial implications these flows could have for individual mines. The challenges of determining intermine flow are numerous, and attention is focused on the identification of areas where these flows can take place. Detailed mining plans on a regional scale are required, and detailed coal-seam floor data are combined to provide targets for possible interaction between these mines. The quantification of these flows is problematic due to the uncertainties regarding geometrical configurations and the variation in site-specific hydraulic characteristics of the coal and overlying lithilogical layers. To this end, use has been made of several analytic solutions and numerical flow modelling. Stage curves (volume versus elevation curves) for the opencast and underground workings have been calculated and first-order estimates for intermine flow or decant from these areas have been determined. The numerical modelling methodology entailed a down-scaling approach, starting with a broad regional model covering the entire area, followed by modelling the interactions between interconnected mines and finally looking in detail at the major areas of interaction. By considering different scenarios within the context of these flows, possible management options for intermine flow can be evaluated in terms of volumes and qualities that might emanate in the post-closure phases. Challenges for the future include obtaining site-specific information on the groundwater hydraulics and acceptable ranges for model parameters, and verifying model results over time.

The demand for environmentally friendly commercial explosives has increased globally due to concerns regarding environmentally friendly mining activities. Ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) and bulk emulsion explosives (BEE) are two kinds of civil explosives primarily used in coal and mineral mining in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the leading countries in coal and mineral mining production and export, with abundant resources; therefore, the consumption of civil explosives such as ANFO and BEE is enormous. The selection and evaluation of commercial explosives are mostly done on the commercial and technical side, and no assessment is made based on environmental aspects. This preliminary study evaluates the economic value and environmental burden of greenhouse gas emissions produced by ANFO and BEE and determines which type of explosives is more environmentally friendly. The combination of environmental and economic indicators, eco-efficiency (E/E), was selected to investigate BEE’s economic and environmental performance compared to ANFO. The life cycle of greenhouse gas emissions of BEE and AN was determined using previously available studies and simple calculations. The cost of the product or explosives was used to represent the economic value. The E/E results showed that environmental and economic sustainability could be enhanced using BEE.

Newcrest’s Cadia concentrator operated from 1998 to 2012 with a traditional SABC grinding circuit treating Cadia open pit ore. The Cadia comminution circuit was well characterised through surveys and data that are available in the public domain, and became a benchmark standard for the industry and practitioners modelling large SAG mill based circuits. In 2012, the HPGR-based crushing circuit was introduced in front of the SAG mill to increase throughput when treating the Cadia East ore that was derived from an underground block cave. This ore was expected to be more competent and have a coarser run-of-mine size distribution.Numerous previous papers have described the design and commissioning of the Cadia HPGR-based circuit.This paper describes the improvement in comminution energy consumption resulting from the introduction of the HPGR, including identifying the impact of process complexity and an increase in ancillary energy consumption for conveyors, screening, and crushing.CITATION:Lane, G S, Seppelt, J and Wang, E, 2018. A mineralogical analysis has shown that in the Hartebeesfontein ore studied, uranium is associated mainly with uraninite, sulphides such as pyrite and to a lesser degree carbonaceous material such as thucolite. Little could be learned from the literature regarding the mechanism of flotation of these uranium-bearing minerals. A wide variety of reagents were used so that conditions enhancing the flotation of either the sulphides, carbonaceous material, oxides like uraninite, or combinations thereof, were created. As could be expected, the xanthate based floats gave-better selective recovery of sulphides than oleic acid. A substantial fraction of the uranium is associated with pyrite, so that addition of oleic acid to a xanthate float did not enhance the recovery or grade of uranium. After a pre-leach with sulphuric acid in which the pH and Eh were controlled so as to destroy the uraninite, higher uranium recoveries were obtained for the combined float (xanthate, DTP and oleic) and the DTP float. This was most evident when iron was added before flotation. Roasting, which destroyed the sulphides and thucolite, caused a significant decrease in uranium recoveries. The uranium liberated in this way was obviously not flotable in the same way as the uranium liberated from uraninite. A small amount of iron (2 kg/t) added before milling resulted in slightly higher grades and recoveries of sulphur for xanthate based floats. Higher iron additions had a detrimental effect on sulphur recoveries. Even in the case of oleic acid the addition of small amounts of iron had a positive effect on the recovery of sulphur and uranium.

The possible use of combined (flotation/magnetic separation and magnetic separation/flotation) technologies involving the new flotation reagent systems for upgrading the iron ore concentrates, low grade manganese products and beneficiation of graphite-bearing dusts from integrated iron-and-steel works has been shown. It has been found that the absence of magnetic flocculation phenomenon worsens the reverse cationic flotation of oxidised iron ore concentrates and direct flotation of low-grade manganese products which require the use of modifiers possessing the flocculating properties. The synergetic mixtures of polymers have been proposed to be used as modifiers, ie polyacrylamide (PAA) with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyacrylamide with industrial lignosulphonates (LST)

A new algorithm has been investigated for three-dimensional open pit designs to improve the dynamic cone approach which utilises the dynamic programming technique. The conventional dynamic cone method was improved by introducing examination processes: 1. whether any negative blocks are included in a unit cone or not; and 2. whether it is possible or not to leave the negative blocks unmined in the unit cone without disturbing the geometric condition imposed on the slope angle of the cone. The newly developed algorithm was applied to a large-scale open pit copper mine in a planning stage and the results have been compared with those obtained by the conventional methods.

The Yanacocha District is located 20 km north of the city of Cajamarca, in the Northern Andean Orogenic belt of northern Peru.Gold production may have occurred as early as Incan times (Paverd, 2000), but modern exploration that began in the 1960s targeted only copper and silver. Newmont Mining Corporation, BRGM and Compa±fa de Minas Buenaventura began exploring for gold in 1983, with Newmont as operator.Initial drilling took place in 1985. By 1992 a reserve of 1.28 million ounces was reported (Teal et al, 2002).Production began at the Carachugo deposit in 1993.Current reserves are 31.7 million ounces at $US 325 per ounce at a grade of 1.03 ppm (Newmont Annual Report, 2003).The operating company, Mineral Yanacocha SRL (Newmont 51 per cent, Buenaventura 44 per cent and International Finance Corporation five per cent) produced 2.85 million ounces in 2003, making Yanacocha one of the largest gold mining operations in the world. The district is made up of a series of epithermal, high sulfidation style gold deposits and one gold-rich gravel deposit (La Quinua), aligned in a NE trend.La Quinua is not discussed in detail in this paper. The bedrock deposits are hosted in a Miocene volcanic package, the Yanacocha Volcanic Complex that also trends NE.Re gional NW striking Andean faults intersect the NE striking Trans-Andean Chicama-Yanacocha structural corridor (Turner, 1997), localising the district mineralisation. These two structural orientations dominate the district, controlling breccia and intrusion locations, and gold mineralisation. Discontinuous EW oriented fracture zones are interpreted as extensional and locally are important in controlling gold mineralisation.

The selection of samples for metallurgical test work is generally focused on providing geologically representative samples. One of the major problems experienced with metallurgical test work using drill hole data, is the small sample sets selected for metallurgical testing. Major process and financial decisions are being made from results obtained using snapshot samples. Snapshot samples means that samples are basically selected only by grade and spatial location with the assumption that the rest of the orebody or portion of orebody is similar and will respond metallurgically the same way – ie the assumption is that the mineralogy and lithology are basically the same as the test sample. From the test work, algorithms were usually developed and used to describe throughput and recovery using some explanatory variables including grade (mineral chemistry) and ore hardness. These algorithms were then used in the recovery models to determine tonnes produced and plant throughput. However, the metallurgical parameters are a function of many geological factors including grade, lithology, alteration, mineralogy, spatial relationships and SG. In previous years, the limited mineralogical information available was deemed enough for the metallurgist to make decisions as to how many samples are needed to evaluate the metallurgical performance of the ore during processing, and subsequently the basis for the plant design. If the orebody is consistent and not complex or refractory (thus, relative simple lithology), then only spatial and grade samples will be needed to evaluate the throughput and recovery, so limited mineralogical information may be acceptable. There is now, however, an increasing realisation that the mineralogy and geology change, as do the metallurgical characteristics of the orebody, so limited samples may not be sufficient for effective metallurgical test work.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the effect correct mineralogical information has on the subsequent metallurgical test work program and process selection using a case study. Factors such as type of rock, rainfall and topography are thought to influence the minerals that ultimately form in various orebodies, with the result that different orebodies often react differently during metallurgical test work programs. It is therefore important to obtain accurate mineralogical and elemental deportment data, which will also indicate where the valuable metal containing minerals are located within the orebody. The better you plan and execute your metallurgical test work program during the early phases, the more accurate the decision-making process will be during the selection phase. Improved integration between geology and metallurgy data gathering (geometallurgy) during early phases will result in more accurate predictions with regard to throughput and recovery during modelling and process. Equipment selection will be considerably simpler in later phases with early planning, with improved mine and process scheduling and subsequent net present value (NPV).

Soil and groundwater beneath the Budelco zinc production plant at Budel-Dorplein (The Netherlands) are contaminated with metals and sulphate. To avoid contamination of nearby drinking water aquifers in the very distant future, a geohydrological containment system (GCS) and a microbial treatment plant for extracted contaminated groundwater have been developed. As a first step in the design of the system groundwater data from over 150 wells and geological profiles were used to model geohydrological conditions beneath the site. Several configurations of water-extraction wells were deduced from the model. Data gathered during additional fieldwork were then used to improve the model. Finally results that were calculated for the various configurations were used to select an optimal groundwater containment system. Currently some 5000 m3/day groundwater are extracted from a combination of 12 shallow and deep wells. Heavy metals and sulphate have to be removed from the extracted water before it can be discharged into the river system or used as process water. Several water treatment methods have been studied and pilot-tested at the site. The preferred and selected process is based on the activity of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) and combines sulphate removal and heavy metal removal in one single step. The anaerobic bacteria reduce the sulphate to sulphide resulting in the precipitation of metal sulphides. A pilot plant gave promising results and a commercial-scale plant has been designed. The proposed design has been tested in a demonstration plant which included all main process units. Test results for all process units are presented. The collected information was then used to optimise the design of the commercial-scale plant. Special attention was paid to automation and safety items. Construction of the plant was finished in May 1992. Start-up, commissioning and operational experience are reported. The concentrations of metals and sulphate in the effluent of the SRB water treatment plant are well within the limits set by the authorities for discharge to public waters.

Mineral deposits in New Zealand whose origin can be ascribed to primary magmatic segregations are associated with mafic-ultra- mafic complexes related to two orogenic episodes which took place during Paleozoic and Mesozoic times. These mafic-ultramafic complexes are essentially of two types. One is ophiolitic and has podiform chromite mineralisation presumably formed below a spreading ridge. The other type occurs as intraplate layered intrusions in which Fe-Cu-Ni sulphides and Fe- Ti-V oxides have formed as a result of liquid immiscibility with the host magma, and have subsequently accumulated by gravity means. Generalised descriptions are given for some deposits in NW Nelson, Fiordland and Marlborough districts.

With the declining of high-quality hematite and magnetite iron ore reserves and the increasing accumulation of material resulting from mining and beneficiation operations that appear as lowquality depots and discharged materials in tailing dams, the necessity of recycling these reserves is increasingly becoming a critical demand. The Chadormalu iron ore mine is among the largest deposits of magnetite-hematite iron ore in Iran. In this mine, the total wet processing tails accumulated in tailing dams are over 92 Mt containing 25–40 per cent Fe. Laboratory and pilot tests on tailing samples led to the design and implementation of the Chadormalu Tailing Recovery plant (CTR) with a unique process circuit in Iran. In the CTR plant, after three steps of re-pulping with spiral classifiers and sanding machines, the underflow is concentrated by two stages of WMIMS and produces 64 per cent Fe grade magnetite concentrate. The tailings of the drums are mixed together and introduced into the hematite recovery section, including two stages of VPHGMS separators, and 60 per cent Fe grade hematite concentrate is produced. This plant has been in operation for over ten years with a total yield of 18.93 per cent. Due to changes in the materials extracted through new tailing dams, the quality of the final concentrate dramatically dropped to 56.36 per cent Fe and 0.79 per cent P; therefore, applying reverse flotation and removing phosphorus from the final concentrate was inevitable. By using this approach, upgrading of the concentrate to 63.01 per cent Fe and 0.05 per cent P was obtained. Furthermore, regarding the high amount of phosphorus in the tailing streams, direct flotation has been designed to produce apatite concentrate as a by-product stream through a flotation system comprising series banks of Rougher, Cleaner, and Re-Cleaners flotation cells. Hence based on the results, at optimum conditions, a final apatite concentrate with a yield of 15.78 per cent and 14.06 per cent P could be achieved. Successful implementation of this project has led to the production of magnetite-hematite and apatite concentrates with annual capacities of 250 000 and 45 000 t, together with total yields of 11.59 per cent and 6.19 per cent (includes de-sliming of apatite flotation feed), respectively.

These may be found with goethite through mechanisms including direct substitution or coprecipitation of nanocrystalline phases. Understanding P incorporation in goethite has significant implications for Australia’s iron ore industry as it lowers their commodity value. The current study tests a novel low-temperature technique to extract P impurities from synthetic goethite phases under O2-free ambient conditions by utilising Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of the Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation of goethite on the geochemical behaviour (mobility and speciation) of co-associated P. To achieve this, we tracked changes in labile P (aqueous and 1M NaOH extractable) concentrations over time in goethite suspensions which were reacted with Fe(II)aq for 14 days under circumneutral pH conditions and room temperature conditions. Temporal changes in Fe mineralogy were investigated via synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Iron K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy confirmed goethite as the only mineral phase in P-free treatments while goethite (~86 per cent) and feroxyhyte (~14 per cent) were the main phases in 1.0 per cent P-containing treatments after a 14- day reaction with Fe(II)aq. According to our findings, the treatment of P-goethite with Fe(II) for a duration of 7–14 days, followed by a 24-hour extraction of the reacted solids using 1M NaOH, results in the removal of approximately 79.5 per cent of the initial P content. This removal encompasses both the aqueous fraction (~4.5 per cent) and the surface adsorbed fraction (~75 per cent) from the 1 per cent P-bearing mineral phase. Notably, this approach demonstrates an improvement in P extractability, with approximately a 10 per cent increase compared to the 1 per cent P-goethite sample that was not reacted with Fe(II).

A pressurisation method with multiparallel fans has been adopted at HongLiuLin Coalmine to control the significant external air leakage through the goaf area of coalface 15207. Potential damaging effects of large external air leakage on a coalmine’s ventilation system are analysed according to the current air leakage status caused by the exploitation of shallow-covered coal seams. The use of pressure balanced ventilation to prevent external air leakage through goaf areas is introduced. The calculation of ventilation network of HongLiuLin Coalmine shows that the air resistance of an external air leakage branch through a goaf area and the air pressure drops from the intake slope to the working face can be adopted to determine the values of pressure to be increased by regulating fans and airflow controlling parameters of regulators. By investigating airflow requirements of the pressure-balanced area as well as the performances of the auxiliary fans currently used in the coalmine, the number of pressurisation fans needed is fixed. The expected result is achieved after the pressurisation method has been carried out, which can be helpful for other coalmines to handle similar problems.CITATION:Wu, F, Chen, W and Wang, H, 2015. Open pit mines in the Yilgam Craton have unique hydrogeological characteristics resulting from a combination of geology, mineralisation and the complex and extended development of the regolith. The principal features of this geological relationship are:ò deep and complex multi-stage development of the weathering profile; ò steeply dipping rock layering;ò supergene enrichment; andò mining across the regolith/rock interface.These features result in large changes in permeability horizontally across rock layers; vertically through the weathering profile and along-strike in association with mineralisation and the mineralised Structure.

One of the primary objectives when optimising a mining complex is to maximise its value for the primary stakeholders. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to holistically optimise all aspects of the mining complex, including decisions of when to extract materials from the available sources, how to blend or stockpile these materials and how to best use the available processing streams to satisfy customer demand. Existing methods for global, or holistic, optimisation ignore the compounded effects that risk has on the performance of a mining complex. Over the past decade, several stochastic optimisation approaches have been proposed to integrate various forms of uncertainty into the open pit mine design and production scheduling. These methods, however, are limited in their ability to simultaneously optimise the production schedules for the portfolio of mines, material destination policies, the use of the available processing streams and the various products that are produced at each location of the mining complex.This paper aims to discuss a new method for the global optimisation of open pit mining complexes with geological uncertainty. The proposed generalised methodology is capable of modelling and holistically optimising mining complexes, including aspects related to production scheduling, blending, stockpiling and non-linear interactions that often occur in practice, but are over-simplified in existing models. Two case studies are discussed to highlight the need for these complex, stochastic optimisers. First, a case study for a nickel laterite blending operation highlights the need to integrate geological uncertainty into the optimisation in order to ensure product quality constraints are respected. Over the last three million years, porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Baguio Mineral District has been driven by calc-alkaline magmatism associated with the subduction of the South China Sea plate and the Scarborough seamounts beneath northern Luzon, Philippines. Coupled with extreme uplift and exhumation rates, mineralisation in the Baguio District has been responsible for the emplacement of over 922 million grams of gold. As one of the oldest intrusive bodies associated with the Baguio District, the Black Mountain Cu-Au deposit consists of at least five intrusive phases overprinted by potassic and propylitic alteration and sulfide mineralisation. Gold ore grades are low and molybdenum grades high with respect to other porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Baguio Mineral District. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Troy Resources NL acquired a 70 per cent interest in the Mina Sertpo gold project in Goißs State, Brazil, in 2001 following a successful bid for the highly competitive international tender of a tenement package put out by Western Mining Corporation (WMC). The Sertpo deposit is located on cleared grazing land 380 km west of Brasilia and is 30 per cent owned by Amazonia Mineracao Ltda, a private Brazilian company. It is a small high grade open-pittable orebody with a measured and indicated resource of 108 000 tonnes at a grade of 49.7 g/t for 172 500 ounces using a 2.0 g/t cut-off. Troy undertook the project management and development of the project while Amazonia managed the exploration activities and provided other services as required. The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, scouring the world to locate an available and suitable second-hand plant, and arranging shipping to andreconstruction in Brazil.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) is undertaking a large research project involving partners from industry, universities and government, which aims to develop the necessary chemical and structural understanding of geopolymer materials made from waste products for them to be used to capture a significant market share of the concrete business for a given industrial region. We are investigating the suitability of a range of soluble silica-bearing waste streams for use as geopolymer concrete feedstocks. In order to utilise a variety of waste streams, either singly or blended, an understanding of the role of secondary metal ions (Fe, Ca, Mg, Ti, etc) in the geopolymerisation process is essential. A range of experimental and analytical techniques is therefore being used to better understand the structure-chemistry-property relationships of geopolymers. Currently, we are investigating geopolymers made from a variety of waste streams (fly ash, kaolinite, red mud, etc) available in the Kwinana Industrial Region, Western Australia. This paper will detail how the basic scientific research underpinning the project is vital if waste streams of varying composition are to be successfully used in a commercial concrete product and the regional synergies required to develop geopolymers from waste streams.

Roy Hill is a large iron ore mining, processing, railing and port operation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Since delivering its first shipments to customers in December 2015, Roy Hill has quickly achieved a 60 Mtpa production rate of lump and fines products. The process plant, principally consisting of wet scrubbing, screening and de-sanding unit processes, was expanded from early 2020 to include operation of a Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) Plant. The WHIMS Plant treats tailings to recover approximately 4 Mtpa of ultra-fine (nominally -150 μm) high-grade hematitic concentrate which, after dewatering, is blended into the fines product. Unlike typical hematite concentrates, which consist largely of dense particles with smooth surfaces, the WHIMS concentrate is characterised by very finely microporous hematitic/goethitic particles, reflecting the overall characteristics of the Roy Hill deposit. Detailed test work has been conducted in collaboration with CSIRO to characterise the WHIMS concentrate in terms of its physical and mineralogical properties, and to determine its influence on the granulation and sintering performance of Roy Hill fines – from fundamental/lab-scale and sinterpot perspectives. The results demonstrate that blending of the high-grade hematitic Roy Hill WHIMS concentrate into the fines product can maintain overall sinter quality and positively influence granulation and sinter melt formation, as well as Fe grade.
