Following the United Nations initiative to fingerprint the origin of conflict materials, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has decided to fund a pilot study on coltan ores. Since 2006, our working group has been investigating columbite- tantalite (coltan) mineralisation, especially in Africa, also within the wider framework of establishing certified trade chains. More than 300 samples were obtained from the worldÆs major coltan producing areas. Special attention is, however, directed to samples and concentrates from Ta-Nb-Sn provinces in Africa: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Namibia. Using state of the art analytical tools, we investigate mineralogical and chemical parameters obtained from columbite-tantalite ores and concentrates in order to distinguish between ore provinces, likely even down to the deposit scale. Methods employed include fully automated electron microscopy (mineral liberation analysis), electron microprobe analysis (major and minor elements), laser ablation plasma-source mass spectrometry (trace elements and U-Pb dating), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (bulk major and trace elements), X-ray diffraction analysis (mineralogy and structure) and thermal-ionisation mass-spectrometry (U-Pb dating). Major and trace element concentration patterns, mineral assemblages in the ore concentrates, and zoning characteristics in the different pegmatites from Africa distinctly differ from each other. Furthermore, the following age populations are evident:Archaean (>2.6 Ga);Palaeoproterozoic (1.9 - 2.1 Ga);early Neoproterozoic (æKibaranÆ; 0.98 - 0.93 Ga); andlate Neoproterozoic to early Palaeozoic (ca 0.5 Ga). Currently, we focus on the resolution of the fingerprinting system from region via ore province down to deposit scale. Our preliminary analytical results indicate that a certification scheme including fingerprinting of sources of coltan ores is feasible.

There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

The Blackwater Coal Mine is a modern open cut operation using large draglines for over- :)urden removal and shovels, loaders and trucks to mine and haul coal to the crushing and coal ?reparation plant. Operations at the mine are described in sequence following through overburden removal to the railing of product coal from the mine site. The close operating connection between the mine and washery, which results from the blending of raw coal into clean product via the qashplant bypass system, is stressed. Some features of special interest at Blackwater Mine, such as land reclamation and slope stability,are outlined.

A program of microseismic noise monitor ing for gas outbursts, in conjunction with other mining engineering measurements and observations, is being undertaken at Leichhardt colliery in Queensland. Headings are developed at present by shotfiring. The equipment being used in this study includes piezoelectric accelerometer assemblies to detect microseismic noise which is then transmitted to a surface base station by cable. Data are recorded on an analogue magnetic tape recorder and are also analysed on-line using a commercially-available acoustic emission pulse analyser. It is proposed to re-interpret recorded data using various modes of analysis and to interface a desktop computer to the existing system to permit continuous monitoring on the mine site. No outbursts have been recorded or analysed and only a limited number of develop- ment shots, and the resultant microseismic activity, have been recorded to date.

The rocks of the Serranias Chilla massif of Bolivia are a suite of metamorphosed Palaeozoic basalts and associated continental sediments. Whole-rock trace element geochemistry of the basalts suggest a calc-alkaline affinity and indicate that subduction extended as far north as the Bolivian Altiplano during lower Palaeozoic time.

The Jacobs Sliding Floor (Floor) is experiencing a surprisingly long competitive life. The first Floor was used on the Camino Tunnel in California in 1960. At that time the Robbins Company had built only seven TBMs, and the future for such machines was considered doubtful by many, as compared to drill and blast methods. This was then, and still is, commonly called the "conventional" method. Robbins' TBM No. 8 was for the Hydro Electricity Commission of Tasmania (HEC) for their Poatina Hydro Project in 1961. In this writer's view, the Poatina experience was the start of successful hard rock boring machines. But, by coincidence, the HEC is using the newest Floor for their King River Hydro project, where driving with the Floor started in July 1986 on the King Tunnel. This paper examines the history and developments in both Floor design and other "conventional" tunnelling equipment, and the site specific conditions that have allowed this old concept to still be competitive in certain select situations. Parametric costing data and some actual progress records are included.

The increasing availability of marker data in sublevel caving operations is changing the way draw can be managed to achieve positive recovery outcomes in these mines. This paper describes how marker data has been incorporated into flow simulations to help calibrate full mine ore recovery simulations for the forecasting and optimisation of recovery.Some flow modelling techniques do not use marker data, relying instead on the outcomes of physical and numerical experiments to guide assumptions about an idealised recovery flow shape. Other mines have access to marker trial data, but find it difficult to specifically link this marker trial information to their recovery models. This can make it difficult to create a link between the marker trial information and recovery forecasting and limits the potential value of the marker trials at the mine.In the simulations shown here, the marker rings are fully incorporated into the flow model, and can be tracked in the model. The model is compared against the real underground marker recovery information to give the user an indication of how accurately the flow settings in the model are reflecting the conditions in the experimental marker rings. PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper-gold mine operation located in West Papua, Indonesia about 3500 km east of Jakarta. Current ore production is about 270 000 tpd, of which 30 000 tpd comes from underground. In the future, the production from underground will be gradually increased to reach a maximum of 115 000 tpd, as the Grasberg open pit production decreases. The current and future challenge for PT Freeport Indonesia is to fill the quota of underground miners, as Indonesia does not have a long culture of underground work. At present, there are only three active underground mines in Indonesia. The lack of underground skilled labour incited the company to develop its own skilled workforce. In the mean time, to overcome the shortage of personnel, the underground management had to find a way to improve the productivity. Since 21 May 1998, PT Freeport Indonesia Underground Mine has operated with the new roster of two rotating shifts a day, 11 hours per shift. The previous schedule consisted of three nine-hour shifts per day, six days a week, for a total of 26 working days in a month. This change was intended to increase the productivity of the miners. With the previous roster, studies determined that the effective working time was only seven hours per shift. The new roster produces an improvement of effective working hours to about nine hours per shift. As a result, total production has increased by 33 per cent and the utilisation of production equipment has increased by 16.5 per cent. This paper describes the background of the decision to change the work schedule, the study carried out to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of the new shift roster, the challenges, and then compares the results for various parameters between the old schedule and the new one.

The successful dissolution of the valuable metal components of a solid phase is often a basic requirement for a successful hydrometallurgical treatment process. Sulphide concentrates are often an intermediate product in the production of refined metals. These concentrates need to be further processed to realise the contained metal values in a useful form. Pyrometallurgical techniques have tended to dominate, at least the initial treatment of metal sulphide concentrates. The technology described, Activox«, has been developed specifically for the hydrometallurgical treatment of these sulphide mineral concentrates, in particular those containing copper, nickel or gold. The Activox« dissolution technology coupled with the use of existing, or newly developed, downstream processing techniques, offers alternative processing options for the recovery of full value, saleable metal products. The technology is suitable for application down to relatively small scales opening up the opportunity for on-site production of metals even at modest scale mining Operations.

This paper presents the results and findings of geochemical and mineralogical testwork conducted on samples collected from waste rock dumps at two mine sites, located in South Carolina, USA (Site 1) and Sudbury Ontario, Canada (Site 2). Important aspects of the relationship between the physical and geochemical aspects of the dumps are also presented. The overall aims of the project were to 1. determine if the physical and hydrological nature of the waste-rock dumps had any impact on the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the dump materials; and 2. to identify key implications for dump construction for ARD control. The results of geochemical and mineralogical tests indicate that the waste rock at Site 1 had undergone significant in-dump weathering and was relatively advanced with respect to ARD evolution. In contrast, the waste rock at Site 2 had undergone some weathering, however still contained a considerable amount of sulfide minerals. Testing also suggested that flushing of oxidation products at Site 2 had been limited, which therefore promoted the storage of oxidation products at the site. In addition, materials that had a D50 particle size in the range of 5 mm to 30 mm appeared to be more readily flushed than samples that had a D50 particle size of 30 mm. This suggested that preferential water pathways may have developed within the dumps at both sites.

The automated measurement of rock fragmentation particle size distribution in the muck during muck excavation has been developing over the last 16 years. The introduction of stereo camera imaging of the muck has provided improved automated particle segmentation for image-based measurement algorithms. Recently, a new vision system processing algorithm has been developed. The inclusion of 2D texture in the analysis has provided a significant improvement in the definition of the finer size fractions, which has resulted in the automated analysis no longer requiring calibration.The previous stereo vision system algorithm required analysis calibration to account for poor ‘small particle’ definition in the 3D surface profile. This was because of the depth perception limitations of the stereo camera system at greater than 8 m. The new algorithm has been implemented on a number of shovel-installed vision systems, and the algorithm’s performance in automated analysis has been assessed against a diligent manual analysis of the same fragmentation images. The new algorithm provides improved distribution resolution and accuracy.CITATION:Noy, M J, 2015. Removing the ledge formation in the Hall-Heroult cell during the electrolysis process may significantly reduce the energy requirement of the aluminium production process. In the absence of the ledge, however, the sidewall-material types become heavily restricted since the cryolite is very corrosive at the electrolysis temperatures. This paper study the corrosion behaviour of sintered nickel ferrite, nickel aluminate, and magnesium aluminate refractories (as possible candidates for sidewall material) in molten aluminium and cryolite melts with various alumina content at 980°C. Immersion tests of refractories with various porosity were conducted to assess the suitability of the refractories in the corrosive environment of the electrolysis cells. Microstructural change of the refractory after immersion were analysed using secondary scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sampling of the melts were taken at 0, 10 min, 30 min, and each hour up to 6 hrs, and subsequently analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. Based on the projected concentration of the refractories constituents in the melts, it was predicted that the corrosion rate of NiFe2O4, NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 in cryolite with 11 wt per cent Al2O3 were 461 × 103, 1.03 × 103, and 798 × 103 cm/a, respectively. Much lower corrosion rate of 2.3 cm/a for NiFe2O4, 2.6 cm/a for NiAl2O4 and 0.3 cm/a for MgAl2O4 were predicted if the refractories in contact with aluminium melts. Erosion played an important role in the corrosion as the concentration of the refractory constituents in the melts were beyond its solubility limit. It is therefore crucial to increase the densities of the refractory and improve its wetting characteristics.

Olympic Dam is the eighth largest Cu deposit and the largest U deposit in the world, with approximately 35 million tonnes of contained Cu and 1.2 million tonnes of U. The most recent resource estimate was for 2.95 billion tonnes of mineralised material with average grades of 1.2 per cent Cu, 0.4 kg/t U, 0.5 g/t Au, 2.6 g/t Ag as contained mineral resources. Olympic Dam is expected to produce >200 000 tonnes of Cu and 4200 tonnes of U3O8 from 9.8 million tonnes of ore in 2004, making it the 12th largest Cu producer in the world. One of the impediments to achieving targeted rates of production has been oversize material (>0.9 m) reporting to stope draw points. A major contributor to oversize material may be overbreak along pre-existing structural weaknesses from stope walls and backs during the production life of a stope. Underbreaking to structures can also have a detrimental effect on the performance of a stope. In an effort to understand the influence of structural geology on stope performance, WMC Resources and SRK Consulting partnered during 2003 to refine the current system of structural mapping, and to use historical data to produce a structural interpretation covering a large part of the mining area. The interpretation has been wireframed in DATAMINETM into a three-dimensional structural framework model. To date, there are more than 600 structures of >50 m strike length incorporated into the structural framework model, which covers a study area 1500 m + 600 m + 350 m. A back-analysis exercise to assess the influence of interpreted structures on overbreak and underbreak was completed for laser-surveyed stopes.

Mining software systems have provided a basis for integration of resource, survey, and design functions. They can similarly provide a basis for incorporating ground conditions into the process.Exploration and mine geologists have a prime role to play in this process, extending their responsibilities further across the geological spectrum, into exploration of ground conditions, analyses of results, and assessments of their implications for mining. Ground conditions are as much a part of the geology of a prospect or mine as its mineralisation, and can have critical imnlicationa for mining.

Tailings dam breaches have caused significant life loss, social, economic and environmental damage in recent years. The term "tailings-flow" refers to various forms of tailings outflow movement resulting from the breach of a tailings dam. These flows, comprising a mixture of tailings, water and dam materials, can take different forms, ranging from a debris flood to a flowslide, and can travel long distances and impact large areas. The inundation extents depend on the failure mechanism, tailings dam height, total released volume, sediment concentration (associated with the rheological behaviour of the flow) and downstream conditions (including topography, land cover and presence of a water body). Numerical runout modelling of tailings dam breaches is important for predicting the dynamics and extent of tailings-flows, which are crucial steps in tailings dam consequence analysis and risk management. This paper presents a comparison of numerical simulations of the 1994 Merriespruit tailings dam breach using three numerical models: DAN3D, FLO-2D and MADflow3D. Using compiled site condition information and data from the literature and public domain, model performance was evaluated primarily based on comparisons between the observed and simulated inundation extents. The main purpose of this preliminary model benchmarking exercise was to help us evaluate the capabilities and limitations of each model, and to identify opportunities for future model improvements as part of a broader research initiative known as CanBreach. This exercise also highlights the inherent complexity of tailings-flows and the importance of using judgement to interpret model input and results.

Uranium mining operations commenced at Ranger mine site, Jabiru NT Australia in May 1980. The Ranger orebodies, totalling approximately 110 000 tonnes contained U305 had been indicated by airborne radiometric survey in 1969 and confirmed by drilling the following year. Both diamond and percussion drilling methods were used to define the mineralisation and samples were analysed using a combination of radiometric and neutron activation techniques. Ore reserve estimates were calculated from conventional and geostatistical methods, and following the mining of 15 million tonnes of ore, reconciliations with before mining estimates are well within acceptable industry standards. In-pit grade control employs radiometric techniques including a radiometric truck discriminator built in Australia to mine specification to meet production requirements and improve productivity. Environmental requirements associated with uranium mining are a daily consideration.

With traditional grade control processes, geological models are created by geologists at the completion of the data collection stage and wireframe construction is closed off at a set date to allow for time to complete the estimation process. Any issues identified at earlier stages or the addition of new data requires the estimation process to be started again. Alternative interpretations are explored only if time allows and often in a limited fashion. An alternative workflow has been developed at the Waihi Underground Gold Mine utilising Leapfrog Edge and Seequent Central. Geological and grade control models are created, dynamically linked, and saved as separate branches. A project geologist is able to work on the grade control model and a mine geologist on the geological model simultaneously. This allows for a non-linear modelling workflow with continual review and feedback. The introduction of new data can occur right up to the model due date, with data collection, validation, alternate interpretation, and review happening incrementally. Models are categorised and stored in Seequent Central according to project status. An approved version of the geological model and grade control estimate are uploaded at the time of release and transparently capture all data used at a point in time, as well as the review process. Dynamically updating models for grade control has reduced turnaround time while increasing accuracy and quality. Estimates of individual domains are vastly improved from being able to rapidly evaluate the effects of model parameter changes in real time and 3D. Development and stope design directly benefit from these streamlined processes, with higher quality, timely production occurring as a result.

The Ocean Drilling Program is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (Legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the 19 countries that subscribe to ODP. Australia and Canada share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The Australian Secretariat of the ODP is housed at the Department of Earth Sciences at James Cook University, along with the AUSCAN Consortium office. The Canadian Secretariat is presently based at the University of Toronto. Both secretariats have major research interests in the ore deposits, both ancient and modem, and so there is currently a major drive by the AUSCAN ODP Consortium to make available data and technological information to the minerals industry. This type of information includes data from drilling hydrothermal sites such as the hydrothermally active TAG black smoker complex on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, drilled during Leg 158, and the Middle Valley sulphide deposit, on the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge, which was drilled during Leg 139.

At least 85 000 tonnes of mine tailings were discharged into Deepdell Creek, east Otago between 1890s and 1940s. The tailings contained about 1 wt % arsenic, so about 850 tonnes of arsenic in the form of arsenopyrite was discharged. Annual floods have removed nearly all tailings within c. 60 years. Small amounts of arsenic-bearing sediments (<250 ppm) remain in Deepdell Creek. About 7 kg/year dissolved arsenic was discharged in groundwater from mineralised Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone rocks in the vicinity of the historic mine sites. Adsorption of this arsenic on to iron oxyhydroxides in the stream sediments may have contributed to the elevated As content of those sediments. Even less arsenic remains in the main Shag valley below the Deepdell Creek confluence (15 - 25 ppm As). Rare relict arsenopyrite grains are trapped in bedrock crevices 25 km from source. No tailings deposition is detectable in theShag River estuary, and the tailings have presumably been discharged into the sea. Natural rehabilitation of the Shag catchment has been rapid and effective.
