Rail, port and shipping charges represent 30 to 50 per cent of landed costs for Australian coal mines selling to Asia. This proportion is higher for sales to Europe, yet it is in Europe where Australian producers are aiming for increased market share. The landed cost of coal to the international customer is the key parameter which determines market competitiveness. The objective of this study is to examine Australian export coal competitiveness in terms of transport distance. The approach used examines world coking coal and steaming coal production and the transport distances between major exporting regions and importing countries. Reference is made to the importance of land transport costs and a comparative approach for emphasising the relative magnitude of this factor is developed. Models developed are examined in terms of Australia's exports and a conclusion is reached that a reduction in rail freight costs would be an effective measure for improving the competitiveness of Australia's coal industry.

A rotary type separator has been developed which separates particles on the basis of their shape. This separator was applied to a particle size range of about 50 - 120 ¦m, and to our present knowledge may be the smallest size range ever to be separated. A theory of the separation is given based on the difference of an adhesive force of the particles: the adhesive force between spherical particles and plate is more powerful than that of irregular shaped particles for the same particle size. These facts have been ascertained by the measurement of an adhesive force by a centrifugal method. US and Japanese patents have been obtained on this separator, which consists of a borosilicate glass cylinder of 150 mm outside diameter, 120 mm in width, and an AC electromagnet. The samples used in this study were mixtures of spherical glass particles and non-spherical shaped glass particles. The results are summarised as follows. In the case of mixtures of spherical particles and irregular shaped particles in the weight ratio of 1:1, the spherical content of the spherical product became 70 per cent - 75 per cent, and in the case of 3:1, the content became 87 per cent - 90 per cent, as the result of one separating operation. However, for a mixture of somewhat rounded particles and irregular shaped particles of weight ratio 1:1, the rounded content varied between 58 per cent - 73 per cent. The feed rate of the particles mixtures was about 0.3 g/min. Newton's Efficiency was 20 per cent - 60 per cent. The separator may find application in shape separation of ceramic powder, metal powder or industrial diamond powder.

Developments since 1959 in major excavators to meet the high outputs of overburden and coal under the changing nature of the Morwell Coal Deposits of the Latrobe Valley are described. Particular reference is made to investigations of designs of the bucket wheel head configurations for the digging of flat batters on high faces, and examples are given of the wide use ofmodelsin these studies.An explanation is given of considerations leading to selection of the Long Boom or the Compact type of bucket wheel excavator for various applications. The past decade has seen increasing manufacture in Australia of components for excavators and similar machines. The measures undertaken to integrate these components with those from overseas (Germany) are described. A section of the paper deals with advances in Electrical Engineering for large excavators in Australia and its interdependenee with mechanical design and construction. Finally, as an example of the versatility of the bucket wheel excavator a description is given of a recent application for the mining of mineral sands in Northern N.S.W.

Stawell Gold Mines Pty Ltd operates two underground decline mines within the township of Stawell. An active exploration program and commitment by owners to improving the ore reserves has led to an improved mine life and reduced operating costs since the purchase of the operation by Mining Project Investors and Pittston Mineral Ventures in late-1992. Over the past six years of operation a cumulative 1 150 000 ounces of gold have been added to the mineral inventory. An improved geological understanding of the orebody has evolved over time increasing the ore reserves and allowing the development of long-term plans for the mines future. This has enabled important capital decisions to be made providing the impetus for improved productivity and thereby reduced operating costs. Co-operative mine planning and mine geology utilising best practice geological systems have enabled the effective extraction of a structurally complex and mineralogically varied deposit within a rural Victorian township. Detailed metallurgical research has improved the function of an aged and poorly designed circuit to boost the mill capacity whilst also improving the metallurgical recovery. The combination of metallurgical expertise and an understanding of the geological setting enable an effective control of metallurgical recovery.

A trigger action response plan (TARP) provides a structured response to escalating levels of risk. In mining, TARPs are typically applied to primary hazards such as inrush, strata failure or heating. Necessary for the creation and deployment of a TARP is a monitoring system capable of detecting deviations from normal conditions. The advent of real-time instruments capable of measuring diesel particulate matter now permit decision-making within shifts to address possible overexposure. Deploying a TARP for diesel exhaust emissions can lower the probability of a person’s average exposure (over a full shift) exceeding the exposure standard by detecting deviations of diesel particulate concentrations from normal conditions. This enables pre-emptive action to mitigate or protect. The adsorption mechanism of three different O,OÆ-di-alkyl-dithiophosphate (dtp) collectors, K[S2P(OR)2] with R = Et, i-Bu and i-Amyl, on the surface of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) was studied by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The morphology changes on the conditioned Cu2S surfaces, in the collector concentration range 0.1 - 10 mM, were also monitored with scanning electron microscope (SEM). In order to assign Cu(I)-dtp species on the surface of Cu2S, the corresponding bulk Cu(I)-dtp compounds, which are clusters of the monovalent copper containing either Cu6(antiprismatic) or Cu8(cubic) cores, were synthesised, and characterised by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS and static 65Cu NMR. Further investigations on the crystal habits of the bulk systems were carried out by powder x-ray diffraction and SEM. A comparative analysis of the 31P chemical shift and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) data estimated from the experimental NMR spectra of the polycrystalline bulk Cu(I) dialkyldithiophosphate complexes was used for assigning the 31P resonance lines in the NMR spectra of the collector treated Cu2S powder samples. The species formed on the synthetic Cu2S surfaces were assigned to polycrystalline phases of: Cu6L6 with L = Et2dtpû, Cu6L6 and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Bu2dtpû, and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Amyl2dtpû. A heterophase autocatalytic step process of both formation and growth of solid CuxLy (L = R2dtp, x = 6 or 8 and y = 6) complexes on the collector treated Cu2S surface is proposed. A possible role of the oxidised form of dithiophosphate collectors, bis[di-alkyl-thiophosphoryl]-disulfane (disulfide), is discussed in terms of a specific self-redox reaction. The second order quadrupolar lineshapes in 65Cu NMR spectra were simulated and the interaction parameters, CQ and hQ, for the bulk dialkyldithiophosphato-copper(I) complexes were obtained.

BHP BillitonÆs new rotary iron ore car dumper installation at Finucane Island (Port Hedland) was constructed to increase the total capacity of the port facility from 110 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa and to allow for incremental capacity increases in future. The arrangement of the dumper is similar to other car dumper installations existing on site. To construct the facility, approximately 120 000 m3 of material was excavated in six months, to a total depth of 22 m. The saline water table was nominally 6 m below ground level and the materials excavated varied depending on depth, ranging from sand to mangrove muds. There was a need to retain the sides of the excavation and limit the amount of water from entering the excavated area. This was required to allow excavation to progress and had to be maintained during construction of the permanent concrete and steel facility. The excavation was backfilled progressively as construction progressed. Various retaining wall methods were investigated with the preferred option being sheet piles secured by walers and ground anchors. Detailed electronic models were developed and assessed to complete the final design arrangement. Dewatering bores around the perimeter of the excavation removed the groundwater to intercepted sumps within the site. A strict and methodical program was developed to monitor the integrity of the temporary works and the quality of the groundwater. The works were completed on time despite the following challenges being encountered: availability of resources and equipment, movement of mobile plant on æboggyÆ materials, difficulty driving sheet piles into material at depth, drilling of ground anchors to 32 m, grouting of ground anchors, greater than expected groundwater flows, and the risk of hydrocarbons within the groundwater. The lessons learned from the use of the retention system and, in particular, the associated construction challenges overcome, provide a sound basis for similar work in this buoyant resource market. The conference paper describes the temporary works options investigated, design considerations and processes, construction methodology and challenges encountered, and the monitoring systems developed. Lessons learned are also discussed.

Generally speaking, Australia's reserves of its more important minerals (in terms of export earnings) are adequate to sustain forecast rates of production to the year 2000. The rate of forecast production increases of these commodities (aluminium - whether as bauxite, alumina or metal, black coal, iron ore and ferro-alloy minerals, base metals, tin, uranium, and mineral sands) reflects a well- ordered and sustained growth phase of Australia's mineral industry.

Large-scale coal mining in South Wales dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries with the birth of ironmaking on an industrial scale. This rapidly gave rise to new and large communities with immigration from far and wide across the United Kingdom (UK). These new communities were largely dependent on coal mining and served as the main form of employment and social cohesion until the industry’s demise in the 1990s. With wholesale mine closure and the concomitant loss of employment, the extensive environmental degradation and chronic mine-related illness left a deep scar on the psyche on many still living in the South Wales mining communities. This coupled with memories of strife in the 1980s has resulted in ongoing hostility toward the surface coal mining of the remaining accessible coal reserves in the proximity of these communities.The purpose of this paper is to set out the historical basis of the concerns of these legacy mining communities in South Wales and explain how they are being positively addressed by both the recently evolved planning and regulation system and by today’s surface mining industry. Reference is made to experience gained from two recent applications for surface coal mining adjacent to former mining communities. Ways are suggested in the approval process that surface mining can work in more harmony with the local communities through working partnerships between the mining company, the authorities and regulators and the affected communities. It is concluded that partnership is key to creating a more responsive mine-operating culture and a means to securing approval for future surface coal-mining prospects in South Wales, and probably elsewhere too.CITATION:Humphries, R N and Thompson, R J K, 2014. Geophysical borehole logging, which measures various in situ petrophysical parameters, can be used not only for qualitative interpretation such as strata correlation, but also for geotechnical assessment through quantitative data analysis. It can play an important role for safe and productive mining operations. Here we provide various applications of geophysical logs such as the estimation of the strength of intact rock or unconfined (or uniaxial) compressive strength (UCS), automated lithological/geotechnical interpretation, geophysical strata rating and orebody delineation and grade estimation. These derived parameters could provide input to control of geological and geotechnical models. This could assist site geologists and planning and production geotechnical engineers to predict and manage mining conditions on an ongoing basis. Both conventional logs such as density, natural gamma and sonic, and less common logging data such as full waveform sonic and televiewer data are examined for different applications. Although the examples used here are mainly for coal mining applications, but they can be equally applied to hard rock metalliferous mining such as iron ore mining.

In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

Haymont (2012) notes that in parts of Australia significant areas of mining disturbance cannot be relinquished. In Queensland it has been estimated that by 2010, just 0.3 per cent 507 ha of mining disturbance had been rehabilitated to the regulator’s satisfaction (Short, 2015).One reason for this poor record is the presence of inappropriate, unachievable or unmeasurable rehabilitation targets (Glenn et al, 2014; Butler, Anderson and Sexton, 2015). In the authors’ experience in Queensland many mature operations have licence conditions that hinder the achievement of sustainable outcomes or prevent successful validation of rehabilitation success. This creates a lack of certainty for industry and a lack of confidence in the community that the sector can deliver good rehabilitation outcomes (Short, 2015).This extended abstract presents a framework approach that has been applied at two contrasting operations. Without the changes presented, the goal of progressive rehabilitation certification, reduction in financial assurance (FA) and a path to surrender at these sites would have been impossible. "In 2010, two McLanahan RSS14&times;50 scrubber screens were installed at Fortescue Metals Group’s (Fortescue) Christmas Creek site. By 2015, the trommel (screen) section had effectively reached the end of their serviceable life. This was determined by regular measurement of structural components over the previous 18 months that tracked wear life. At the same time, numerous trials and optimisations had taken place on screen panel design and material composition. During 2015, a new set of trommels were designed, manufactured and installed that incorporated many new features: increased open area to facilitate high throughput, improved wear protection for structural members, simplified trommel panels and realigned discharge ports to reduce wear on exit. Numerous other upgrades have taken place on the drive system, feed chutes, liner and weir configurations and park brake, to name a few. This paper will highlight how regular measurement drove design changes and how the site and the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) managed a replacement program that has delivered improved performance.Citation:Wilson, R, Luke, S, Freeburn, B and Williams, R, 2016. Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. A fiber optic distributed sensing system allows the monitoring of parameters useful to determine the short- and long-term behaviour of the structure in response to the external actions, including, eg seismic activities as well as long-term phenomena such as seepage, tunneling, sinkholes, and other geo-structural movements. Monitoring of large retaining structures with such a system provides direct strain/deformation and temperature measurements on the broad interior area with an arrangement of several sensing cable lines, enabling early detection, localisation and sizing of subsurface damages. Measurements are provided every meter along the entire sensing cable, this is particularly important in such cases where the location of defects and damages cannot be predicted. Fiber optic distributed sensing cables are generally available for retrofit installation inside the dam structure using trenches on the downstream face or laid during construction below the geomembrane liner within the bedding sand layer. Mapping the cable route enables exact correlation between a linear coordinate on the cable length and a position in the dam. Cable installation is envisaged to be carried out during further raising of the embankment; additional cable sections are plugged to the previously installed cables and measured with the existing measurement system, requiring only an update of the mapping. The measurement system is placed remotely from the sensing area since a section of sensing cable can be used to link to the sensing area at the storage facility several kilometers away. The system is available for on-line, 24/7 real-time operational data management. Such fiber optic distributed sensing systems allow storage facilities to be monitored with long, accurate, continuous and precise data for geotechnical diagnostic purposes. This contribution will introduce the principles, benefits, and limitations of this technology.

Ore handling improvements at Mount Isa Mines Limited were necessary to keep abreast of technological advances in all phases of sublevel stoping practice.In the early 1930s an efficient ore handling system was in operation.However in 1936 excessive water encountered in deepening the hoisting shaft necessitated the sinking of a second hoisting shaft. Financial difficulties prevented abandoning the original shaft and surface ore handling and crushing facilities, so ore was transferred underground and underground crushing deferred. It was not until 1951 Jhat multilevel crushing permitted increased efficiency in the handling of ore from stopes. Ore was then hoisted in one shaft and transferred on the surface by conveyor belt to a new crushing plant.In 1956 a planned production increase from 5,000 to 11,000 tons per mining day made possible further improvements in ore handling. Larger equipment was installed and existing equipment modified to capacitate the handling of larger sized ore at increased daily tonnages.INTRODUCTIONThe intensive exploratory programme commenced in 1954 disclosed large reserves of both lead and copper ores and in 1956 an expansion programme was initiated to increase production from 5,000 to 11,000 tons per mining day. The increased tonnage would result in decreased costs per ton and further cost reductions would result from increased mechanisation underground. The combined effect would permit larger tonnages of lower grade ores to be included in ore reserves. An in-depth process model was developed for the pyrometallurgical, off-gas systems and water balance of the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. This model was used to assess plant capacity with changing concentrate grades, increased throughput and tighter environmental emissions under a range of potential future operating conditions. Comparison of modelled results allowed for flow sheet optimisation across a range of metrics including sustainability, processing capacity and costs. Process modelling software, METSIM® (ver 2020.06 by METSIM International), was used to simulate the flash furnace, integrated electric slag cleaning furnace, Pierce-Smith converters, matte granulation, waste heat boiler, hot gas handling equipment, wet gas cleaning plant and acid plant. The METSIM® model was divided into three separate, yet interconnected models: metals, off-gas and water balancing. This allowed for improved modelling efficiency and traceability while minimising manual error. The METSIM® model was supported by inputs from other specialised software. Chemical thermodynamics software, FactSage™ (ver 8.2 by GTT Technologies), was used to establish relationships for the flash furnace fluxing strategy and determine the operating temperature. Arena® (ver 16.0 by Rockwell Automation), a discrete event modelling software, was used to simulate material movements within the aisle as well as Pierce-Smith converter operation, allowing for integration with upstream and downstream systems. A dynamic data exchange (DDE) was used to connect the results of each software package, interfacing through Excel® (version 4203 by Microsoft). The integration between models provided a streamlined approach to test capacity, bottlenecks, water consumption and emissions under a range of operating conditions, enabling a more robust process. Further downstream modelling techniques were used to assess mechanical equipment. METSIM® outputs provided key parameters for combustion assessments using computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis for the furnace mechanical design.

The Soci&#233;t&#233; Nationale Industriel et Mini&#232;re (SNIM) is expanding its ore and concentrate production capacity in Mauritania, West Africa. This government-controlled mining company has been in production since 1963 and currently exports some 12 Mt/a.SNIM is presently doubling its magnetite concentrate production at the Guelb el Rhein mine. An existing processing line will have a second parallel production line of 4 Mt/a added. The mine is located some 600 km inland from the Atlantic coast in the heart of the Sahara Desert.The metallurgy of the ore is reasonably straightforward. It is a magnetite banded iron formation that is amenable to magnetic separation. While the existing plant uses semi-autogenous grinding and dry magnetic separation, the new processing line will use HPGRs, dry magnetic separation, and a wet milling and magnetic separation circuit for treating middlings.The process choices refl ect the scarcity of water in the region, the high cost of locally generated power and the operating experience and preferences of SNIM. Dust control in the desert environment has been a particular challenge.The metallurgical design aspects as well as the infl uence of the environmental and commercial aspects of the project are presented.

At its simplest, the classification and characterisation of an orebody is a matter of Where, What and When. Where and with what spatial resolution are measurements taken, What properties are measured, and When are the data acquired, processed, and delivered to create the most value. This paper delves into how existing and near-term advances in measurement technologies, field automation, and whole-system-digitisation are combining to open new routes for mine and exploration productivity improvement. Commencing when the initial exploration hole is dug, the advancement in deployment of survey technology—from expert-operated, to driller-operated, to driller-integrated—is used to demonstrate a template for adoption of higher technology measurements. We then introduce and discuss the multi-use measurement as offering outsized returns from a single measurement run, highlighting two new technologies that acquire rock strength while drilling and downhole assay data as examples. For rock strength, we highlight a novel approach to determining Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) while drilling, its relationship to and advantages over Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE), and how it offers utility to multiple downstream processes. For downhole assay, we detail how a back-tophysics approach to Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) analysis offers significant advantages over other measurement methods and earlier implementations of PFTNA, generating a rich data set that can significantly extend and improve the information on which mining decisions are made. Finally, we discuss the possibilities enabled via optimising data delivery, collection, and curation— noting a fundamental limitation of historical systems and exploring the possibilities that will be unlocked by soon-to-market solutions that better enable Orebody Characterisation data to (virtually) move in space and time with rock material post-blasting. Ultimately, the value of optimising the Where, What, and When from point of measurement to the moment it generates maximum value will create greater life-of-asset production for a lower cost and energy input.

DeGrussa Copper Mine, resource status 10.2 Mt at 5.7 per cent Cu, 2.1 g/t Au (Sandfire Resources, 2013), commenced concentrate production through its 1.5 Mt/a conventional copper flotation processing plant in September 2012. Geometallurgical assessment during the feasibility study identified potential process-critical ore factors that required further investigation to determine potential impact on processing. Ore characterisation and metallurgical processing performance test work of ore types ensued and subsequently, the first quantitative DeGrussa geometallurgy model was born. Now one year into steady state production, the geometallurgical program has evolved significantly from its infancy and provides valuable insight into ore characterisation and behaviour in the processing plant.
