Times are changing for the mining industry. Civil society is demanding that miners pay more attention to the ways they impact on, and engage with, communities around their mines. Miners, in turn, are being forced to adapt and learn new social skills for which they were not originally trained. They are doing so in the middle of a broad resources boom, which is adding short-term operating challenges at the same time as miners need to be developing thoughtful solutions to longer term community issues. This paper examines a number of the issues that now loom on the horizon of mining companies. These include: human resources challenges and the crisis in minerals education; continuing community and social expectations of the resources industry and the impacts they will have, for example, on product stewardship, greenhouse gas emissions and the use of increasingly precious water resources; and current impediments to mineral exploration spending.It is concluded that the greatest challenge for the minerals industry is to develop a stronger cadre of local leaders and for the larger global miners to empower their local management to take on stronger public leadership responsibilities. There is a need for executive leadership to remember both the longer term and shorter term cyclical nature of the mining industry in developing solutions to community problems. Above all there is a compelling case for mining industry leaders to be more actively engaged with the wider community in the resolution of these issues.

Recent catastrophic failures of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) continue to highlight the need for a detailed understanding of failure modes and the defences that are in place within the design to mitigate the failure modes. However, in many cases the instrumentation devices and monitoring approaches selected during operation do not link back to the design defences and inappropriate or redundant instrumentation is often installed. Candidate instruments and monitoring approaches (critical controls) are presented and matched to critical failure modes, with clear linkages to the intent of each instrument/monitoring approach. Commentary on where complementary measurements with independent technology types are recommended to provide greater assurance of trends to the design engineer or TSF owner is also presented. In response to the recent TSF failures, an increasing focus is being placed on instrumentation and monitoring relating to slope instability and safeguarding against the potential for static liquefaction, using a critical state soil mechanics framework. To support selection of appropriate zoning within a stability model, three complementary devices are recommended – vibrating wire piezometers to provide an indication of pore pressure and allow the phreatic surface to be inferred, tensiometers to confirm the presence of unsaturated conditions (and hence low potential for undrained failure) and moisture content sensors to provide an indication of void ratio, and hence state parameter, in saturated zones. The combination of VWPs and tensiometers will provide complementary measurements in the saturated and unsaturated zones, and also provide information on the extent of any near-saturated zones, provided that sufficient instruments are installed.

Vertical retreat open stoping (VROS) is a variation of sublevel open stoping (SLOS) that has been introduced at Cannington to minimise the influence of subvertical geological structures during stope extraction. The first application of VROS is described, where structures within the stope resulted in a change in firing sequence and the extraction of two complete sublevels in a single blast. The use of electronic detonators is critical to the success of VROS and their application is described. Numerous benefits of using VROS have been identified and are described. To date, eight stopes have been successfully mined using VROS. In addition to the first application of VROS, two further case studies are described.

The Collie River catchment, located approximately 200 km south of Perth, covers an area of around 2830 km2 and is the source of run-off to the Wellington Dam, an important irrigation water resource for the Collie Irrigation District. The salinity of the Wellington Dam has increased due to historical clearing and irrigators currently use water with salinity levels approximately twice that of the Murray River in South Australia (Water and Rivers Commission, 2001). The Collie River Salinity Situation Statement (2001), released by the Water and Rivers Commission (now the Department of Water), identified realistic actions that could achieve the salinity reduction target. Subsequent benefit-cost analyses and prefeasibility studies recommended the diversion of the most saline flows in the Collie River away from the dam as an immediate intervention (URS, 2003). The East Branch of the Collie River above the locality of Buckingham (20 km east of Collie) contributes around half of the salt that flows into the Wellington Dam and the diversion and storage of the saltiest flows from the East Branch at Buckingham was identified as a viable option for reducing salinity in Wellington Dam. The proposal had one problem û the water could not be disposed of as quickly as it was diverted. However, in the vicinity of the diversion site were a number of coal mine voids and after preliminary discussions, the Government/Griffin Coal alliance was formed and from this the opportunities have continued. Diverted water would be stored temporarily in an adjacent mine void (Chicken Creek 4 void) and then disposed of to the sea. The disposal options included Western Power CorporationÆs saline discharge pipeline from Collie Power Station, or a new pipeline. The diverted water was also identified as a potential raw source for treatment and use in industry. This has opened up opportunities including desalination, water efficiencies in the power stations, increased reliability of water supply for the power stations, water for new industries, wastewater disposal options and extra water for PerthÆs water supply. In the process of solving the water storage problems the project introduced a range of mine water quality problems û heavy metals and pH û and the Department of Water (DoW) is now working with the mining industry and the Centre for Sustainable Mine Lakes (CSML) to develop treatment and management technologies. The project has received support and funding through the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) and it has been possible to accelerate and enhance this project as a result of NAP. The DoW has developed the proposal to an advanced stage and gained approvals for the capital diversion program to go ahead. The partnerships have expanded to include the second mining company, Premier Coal, the Water Corporation, Western Power and the Harvey Irrigation Cooperative. The proposal could feasibly result in a $90 million integrated water management initiative for Collie using the latest technology, mining operations and providing water for value adding industries in the local area. The DoW is not a mining company; however, our experience in managing water in times of shortage, environmental water quality criteria, competition for water and managing community expectations will have the same success factors:consultation and knowing your community and stakeholders, sharing issues and working in partnership can provide results far greater than the initial issue, even brackish water has value, every sector is in competition with each other and has to have a share of the water, an integrated approach can provide opportunities for development in areas of water shortage, and never think of water as wastewater.

MacPhersons Reward gold deposit is in a post-kinematic tonalite intrusion which is a setting different from many other deposits of the Coolgardie goldfield that are hosted in early Archaean tholeiitic sills or meta-sedimentary rocks. Gold mineralisation at MacPhersons Reward consists of auriferous quartz veins that are best developed in the tonalite but extend to the adjacent komatiitic rocks and along the lithological contact zones. The gold-related alteration halo is dominated by biotite-chlorite and pyrrhotite. Unlike many other Coolgardie deposits, the As concentrations are low.

Cameco Corporation operates the high-grade 140 tpd fly-in/fly-out underground McArthur River Uranium Mine in Northern Saskatchewan in a joint venture with Cogema Resources Inc. Reserve grade is in excess of 20 per cent U3O8 with current mining grade averaging 16 per cent U3O8. Due to the high radiation potential of the ore, the non-entry mining method of raiseboring was chosen to minimise worker radiation exposure potential. The raisebore and extraction horizons are located in waste rock with the orebody located between horizons. Ore produced by raiseboring is delivered by LHD to an underground SAG mill and is then hydraulically hoisted to surface receiving facilities after underground thickening to 50 per cent solids by weight. Concrete backfilling is utilised. The orebodies at McArthur River are adjacent to water bearing sandstone. Ground freezing is therefore employed to isolate the ore from this water bearing ground. Calcium chloride brine at -35¦C is circulated through a series of cased boreholes to establish freeze walls up to 25 metres in thickness. At 18 000 000 lb of low cost U3O8 production per annum, McArthur River ranks as the worldsÆ largest uranium mine. Over 50 per cent of the workforce resides in this sparsely populated area of Canada with approximately 40 per cent being of aboriginal ancestry. Site operations must cater for winter temperatures as low as -50¦C.

"A key component of any geometallurgical investigation involves being able to predict element or mineral recoveries from simplified input data such as bulk chemistry and/or mineralogy. This relies on the metallurgist having access to accurate information regarding the chemistry of the ore and gangue minerals as well as the likely impact on processing/extraction caused by the impurities (present either as gangue or as substitutional impurities). In this study the chemical properties of two commercially important uranium minerals, brannerite (U4+Ti2O6), and uraninite (U4+O2), were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Significant levels of impurities were present in both samples with the uranium minerals deviating significantly from their ideal chemical formulae. Differences in chemistry were due to: cationic substitution decay of the uranium isotopes into radiogenic lead and other daughter products mixed uranium oxidation states post-depositional alteration.As well, the brannerite sample showed evidence of significant radiation-induced metamictisation. Leach tests to measure the ease of extraction of uranium from both samples were conducted over a wide range of conditions (temperature, acid concentration and oxidant concentration). For uraninite, the lower U dissolution rates observed in the natural sample compared to a synthetic UO2 sample were directly attributed to the presence of impurities. For brannerite, significant metamictisation of the natural sample led to enhanced U extraction rates compared to a heat treated fully crystalline sample. This study highlights the importance of detailed mineralogical characterisation studies in any uranium process mineralogy investigation as the compositional, textural and microstructural aspects of the main uranium phases present will likely play an important role in any process to extract uranium.CITATION:Ram, R, Charalambous, F, McMaster, S, Pownceby, M I, Tardio, J and Bhargava, S, 2013. "The requisite for maintaining optimal carbon concentration levels in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit is of paramount importance in the prevention of gold losses. The process’s ability to recover gold from the aqueous phase is primarily dependent on the carbon loading profile of the CIL train.Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) have over 2015 tested the Mintek online carbon concentration wmeter (C2 Meter) suitability for effective carbon concentration measurements in their CIL circuit compared to the standard method where the readings are taken twice a shift by the operations staff. The C2 meter works by passing a 1MHz ultrasonic signal through a slurry containing carbon where there is a relationship between the carbon concentration and the attenuation of that signal.It also highlighted another area where the C2 meter could be implemented at NBG whereby the instrument can be as a cautionary device for carbon losses in place of carbon safety screens.Citation:McCamley, C, 2016. "An effective geotechnical design provides an accurate and appropriate assessment, balanced with a mining company’s risk profile. Justifying the cost of slope assessment requires an understanding of the input sensitivities, and resultant risk, to achieve a slope of a required functionality. As a project progresses from Scoping to Feasibility, the geotechnical risk becomes better resolved through increased expenditure on drilling, testing, analysis and modelling as long as the input data is appropriately spatially distributed. Providing accurate and appropriate geotechnical assessments in the early stages provides confidence in all following stages, especially where initial analysis indicates difficult geotechnical conditions. It is also in the early stages of project definition that there is most opportunity to maximise the value of the deposit through investigations into optimal mining methods.This paper examines the advantages of geotechnical engineering input through a project study period. Early geotechnical involvement allows the Scoping and Pre-Feasibility Studies to be more effective. Operational risks can then be better understood and dealt within the Feasibility Study phase, also ensuring that the correct risks and management controls are put in place.With commodity price pressure and cost of resource recovery in a downturned industry, reducing the risk to cash flow, resource recovery and safety should be a primary goal for all mining companies. Central Andean (22¦S to 34¦S latitude) Miocene giant ore deposits share common features that reveal their origin. Tectonic and magmatic features include a relation to a shallow subduction zone, an association with the waning or initiation of a magmatic episode, emplacement at the time of uplift associated with crustal thickening and formation at times of major magmatic changes along the Andean margin. Rare Earth Element (REE) signatures in magmas erupted near the time of mineralisation indicate a progressive change from equilibration at depth with a hydrous, intermediate-pressure amphibole-bearing mineral residue to equilibration with an anhydrous high-pressure garnet-bearing assemblage. These features point to a common history. First, a relatively shallow subduction zone leads to hydration of a cool mantle wedge providing a source of fluids which builds up over at least several million years. Arc magmas formed at this time equilibrate with a hornblende-bearing residual mineralogy. Second, a compressive tectonic regime leads to crustal shortening and thickening that facilitates entrapment of arc magmas in the crust. Eventually, the magma-weakened crust yields to horizontal compression causing rapid crustal thickening. Fluids required for mineralisation are liberated as amphibole-bearing assemblages break down to garnet-bearing ones and over pressured fluids are released from plutons. Mineralisation subsequently ceases in the region unless continued dehydration of the slab and mechanical thinning of the continental lithosphere causes the previous conditions to repeat. The type of mineral deposit generated depends on the pre-existing continental lithosphere and the distance from the trench.

Proposals for engineering works in the River Dement in recent years have been made in the context of very little geological informat- ion. Breakage of the Tasman Bridge, forced a complete re-appraisal and collection of inform- ation in order to select a new site and predict problems. Seismic, magnetic and gravity methods foll- owed by drilling have allowed an assessment of the nature, thickness and distribution of mater- ials underlying the river bed. Key discoveries included recognition of low seismic velocity silts (1100 m/s) and a separate channel for the river since the Late Tertiary.

It is understood that rocks do not instantaneously transport along a grinding mill and are consequently not perfectly mixed, but this is conveniently overlooked in mill modelling. A lack of understanding of the transport phenomenon and the difficulty of modelling realistic transport in a complex tumbling system, contribute to this. Visual observation of segregation in AG and SAG mills and measured lag time of mill response to changes in feed provide evidence of the influence of axial transport within mills. Incorporating this lag in dynamic models should underpin dynamic simulation of milling circuits for design and for model-based control. Limitations and errors in predicting the influence of increased power via mill length versus diameter, inability to predict pebble production, and a lack of the differential in residence time across rock sizes and competences, all contribute to inadequate design prediction that can be especially acute for large Autogenous mills. Examples of dramatically under – and overloaded pebble regrind circuits and the inability to predict pebble load in AG milling discouraging the application of this energy-efficient option, point to the need for predictive modelling of breakage by competence linked to transport through and out of mills. Incorporating progress in granular flow and mixing, coupled to computational advances enable models to be based on complex breakage and transport models at high spatial resolution. This allows mechanistic models to simulate thousands of times faster than real time, opening the door to more accurate mill design, including dynamics in process simulation and to live simulation for process control – all with advanced mechanistic models. The value of grasping this opportunity is not easily refuted.

An increase of 22 per cent in lead usage is expected in the European Union by 2050. During lead refining, the Harris process is a critical step in which a salt melt is used to remove arsenic, tin and antimony. During this process, the caustic salt melt absorbs these impurities, requiring regular evacuation before saturation. Current metallurgical practices for: 1) determining the end point of the lead alloy involve time-consuming sampling and offline analysis, and 2) determining the end point of the caustic salt melt are based on subjective visual observations by the operator. In the context of Industry 4.0 concept, automating these processes becomes desirable, as smart sensors systematically collect real-time data in an unbiased manner. This research focuses on monitoring the Harris refining process using objective methodologies. Two different methodologies are investigated. The first methodology focuses on electrical conductivity changes of the caustic salt melt as function of Sb content. For this study, synthetic and industrial samples are used. A lab-scale electrical conductivity set-up was built to accommodate the aggressiveness of the salt melt. Initial findings suggest a promising relationship between electrical conductivity and Sb content in the caustic salt melt. Although the results are preliminary, the study provides valuable insights by enabling real-time measurements. The second methodology focuses on measuring the electromotive force (EMF) in lead doped with Sb at pilot-scale. Multiple probes are reevaluated for their effectiveness in Sb measurement. Ultimately, a partially stabilised MgO probe with Ni as a reference, without cardboard and copper protection caps, yields promising results. A correlation between EMF and Sb content is observed. However, repeatability issues arise due to possible wire interference at low temperatures. The results underscore the potential of advanced measurement techniques in optimising lead alloy production within the context of Industry 4.0.

The Woodcutters deposit, 65 km south- southeast of Darwin, N.T., consists of a series of veins of pyrite, sphalerite, and galena with some silver, cadmium, antimony, and arsenic minerals. The veins are hosted by the Early Proterozoic Whites Formation, a sequence of black slates with interbedded carbonate rocks and minor ash tuffs. The known orebodies occur about 300 to 500 metres above the contact of Whites Formation with the underlying Coomalie Dolomite, which consists of dolomite and magne- site. The stratigraphic setting is lithologic- ally similar to that of the Mt. Isa deposit, Queensland. The orebodies are replacement veins occ- urring along fault and dyke structures which are sub-parallel to the axes of a double-nosed faulted anticline. The orebodies are in part associated with two unusual carbonatized lam- prophyric dykes. The dykes were intruded after the fold and its slaty cleavage were formed. The ore has replaced the dykes and host rocks and is therefore late-stage hydrothermal miner- alization. The known orebodies are open at depth. A "bonanza" of high-grade ore occurs at the upper part of the largest orebody and is currently the subject of an open cut mine planning study by a consortium of companies headed by Nicron Resources Ltd.

Grade Engineering® is a value-driven strategy aiming to maximise benefits by exploiting intrinsic grade variability of ore deposits. It utilises a multitude of separation techniques to remove low grade material before being introduced to post-blast size reduction processes, i.e. crushing and grinding. At an operational scale, Grade Engineering® techniques can be implemented at the drill-and-blast stage, to control the degree of fragmentation in accordance with the spatial distribution of valuable minerals across an ore domain through differential blasting. It can also exploit intrinsic textural and breakage characteristics of a given ore type to reject uneconomical barren material at coarse sizes, which is known as Natural Deportment. Grade Engineering® can also be employed in the deliver stage of the mining value chain through sensor-based bulk and particle sorting. Each strategy is therefore highly dependent on the responsiveness of an orebody to available techniques. That is, the extent to which Grade Engineering® drivers would be capable of unlocking potential values of currently un-amenable orebodies depends on how detailed the heterogeneous nature of ore domains can be described. This paper considers exploring possible linkages between deportment characteristics of an ore and its competence when broken in a range of energy inputs at a particlebased level. Accordingly, potential opportunity may lie in exploring whether the intensity of input energy (or degree of fineness) can be used as a lever to improve or ‘unlock’ ore amenability to Grade Engineering® techniques. Implications from such a detailed approach offers new opportunities to enhance Grade Engineering® gains through engineering ore competence variability.

"Even with the cyclic nature of mining, when it comes down to it, the bottom line is that whatever direction the commodity market is going there is always a desire to improve the economics of an operation in order to deliver a greater return to investors. Adapting to market pressures by introduction of an operational process change can often have a downstream impact. What may be less obvious is that reconciliation can play an important part in measuring the effectiveness of many operational changes. Through the adoption of best practice reconciliation and related comparisons, it is possible to measure the impact of changes across the mine value chain and identify variability that may have been introduced. Using analytical business improvement tools, examining and monitoring planned changes can be crucial in understanding whether the introduced changes have been effective and whether they have provided the expected result. Industries that handle and process ‘dusty’ ores are facing increasingly difficult challenges to ensure sustainable operation and development. Most existing dust-control measures treat only the symptoms of dust generation and do not deal with the root cause/s of the problem. Many of these methods are also relatively inefficient in terms of controlling dust emissions. This paper summarises the various existing options available for dust control and some of their features, advantages and disadvantages. It then describes some of the new technologies that are being researched, developed and employed to minimise dust emissions by addressing dustability or dustiness and the dust generation mechanisms found in industry. Recent research results and case studies are presented to demonstrate some interesting findings obtained from this work. With improved understanding and modelling of dust generation mechanisms and bulk material dustiness, it is possible to achieve a step-change improvement in the design, troubleshooting and application of more efficient dust-control technologies.CITATION:Wypych, P W, Hastie, D B, Wangchai, S and Grima, A P, 2015. I have to say that my story is not too much different to many others who grew up and worked in the great mining fields like Broken Hill, Mt Isa, Rosebery, Kalgoorlie or Kambalda and any one of them could have stood up here and spun you a good yarn.What does my paper offer you in this volume? By sharing my experiences I want to encourage you to consider your own experience with leadership, taking on change, learning from and contributing to the development of others.I have been very fortunate to be part of many new innovations into underground mining over the past 40 or so years; most of it with Conzinc Rio Tinto Australia (CRA)/Rio Tinto operations.•From hand-held drills and a homemade single boom Jumbo mounted on an old Airtrak, to the sophisticated twin boom jumbos with high speed drifters all controlled by an on-board computer;•from a Scraper winch and a Wagner 2D loader to fully automated electric LHDs that navigate to the tipple, empty the bucket and return to where they come from;•from hand-held cut-and-fill and timber stoping in Broken Hill to the bulk mining methods of a block cave where at Northparkes we mined more ore in a month than we mined in the total five years of operations at Currawang;•from hand-held scaling and bolting with no skin protection to installing ground support with Jumbos and sophisticated Cable Bolters and the introduction of in cycle shotcrete;•from hand-held ladder rising and shaft sinking to Box Hole rigs, Raise Bore Machines and Blind Hole shaft sinking; and•from Gelignite based AN60 stick explosives, ANFO, fuse firing and half second detonators to Powergel, Emulsions and electronic computer programmed detonators that can somehow be initiated by ‘Blast Ped’ travelling through the rock.

SOME 70 miles south-east of the of Auckland lies the town of Waihi-the centre of the Waihi goldfield, at present the mining pride of New Zealand. That the glory of most mining camps is evanescent forms an axiom to which it may be expected Waihi will prove no exception. For the last fifteen years, however, Waihi has been an important gold-silver producer, with an annually increasing output, so that now the area ranks as one of the leading goldfields of the world.
