In surface mining operations, the ease with which a muckpile may be dug is a dominant factor in mining efficiency. Within broad limits, this is largely dependent on muckpile shape and looseness within a muckpile. Moreover, prediction of grade boundary movement and subsequent dilu- tion is of interest to most open cut mines. Such a predictive tool would enable blast design changes to be made to reduce mixing of certain grade regions. At the very least, a good knowledge of post-blast region bound- aries can reduce layout of the grade boundaries and decrease grade dis- crepancies between pit and plant. The model presented in this paper is able to consider various options for a production blast and predict consequent muckpile shapes and grade boundary movements in a three dimensional manner. The overburden geometry, hole patterns, hole inclination and charge distribution are all explicit model inputs. The model divides the rock mass into blocks and calculates a velocity for each block. Three controlling parameters are used in the model, which are related to the explosive energy per unit length of blast hole, energy attenuation of the rock mass and inter-row delay, respectively. The output of the model is a 3 dimensional muckpile shape (contour or any cross section) and a contour map of grade distribution within the muckpile. The model parameters are site specific, since their values depend on the rock condition and explosive-rock interaction which varies from site to site. In order to "tune" the model to a particular site, parameter values must be found which reproduce an observed muckpile profile shape from a given blast design. This calibration of the model requires at least one surveyed muckpile profile shape from a production blast. The model parameters which best reproduce that shape are found by a pattern search technique, and may then be used to predict the effect of changes in blast design on muckpile profile shape and grade boundary movement.

The mining industry seeks to engage with and respond to stakeholders through open consultation processes during the various phases of a mining project (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, 2006). Two Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects conducted in the Bowen Basin coalfields in Central Queensland investigated the use of a stakeholder panel for the evaluation of mine site rehabilitation. The panel members were drawn from the local and regional area, and represented neighbouring landholders, traditional owners, AgForce, local government, conservation groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Greening Australia and the Fitzroy Basin Association. The approach of utilising stakeholders to establish rehabilitation criteria was proposed as an alternative to the established practice of assessing rehabilitated areas against a suite of quantitative completion criteria; eg >70 per cent vegetative ground cover or <5 t/ha/a soil loss. The basis of this approach recognises the reality that the definition of completion criteria has proved problematic over the last 40 years with no broad consensus reached on the suite, let alone the metrics; eg the exact cover level that will benchmark acceptance of the mine site rehabilitation.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2016. "Regardless of orebody value, at some stage, the pit will reach a depth where the reward for mining wider and/or deeper is not justified by the anticipated returns. ‘Last-blast’ strategies may help to some degree in recovering additional quantities of the resource but when a pit remains, there is often significant value left in the ground. In addition, in many cases, one or many good reasons may dictate why going underground and pursuing the orebody below the pit is also not justifiable. Whereas the company can hopefully move on to other more prospective parts of the orebody, the remaining options for the pit are usually very limited. Typically the pit is either held for potentially more favourable future pit expansion opportunities or it could be used for an alternative purpose, such as tailings or waste storage. This paper will present an alternative option that involves the direct extraction of values using in situ recovery (ISR) methods to recover additional value metals from the walls and/or floor of the pit. ISR involves circulating a fluid through the remaining orebody, solubilising the target metal and subsequently returning the solution to the surface for metal recovery. ISR is not the panacea to all but it has been employed selectively in the minerals industry for some time and the production of metals, such as uranium, rely heavily on this approach. ISR is not yet considered by many operators as an approach to compete with open pit or underground mining, largely because of the perceived limitations of this approach and the perceptions of risk. Rapid recent development of tools and enabling technologies relevant to ISR have made us reconsider the most economic approach to extracting many other metals from known mineral systems, even those currently listed as subeconomic. We suggest that ISR has the potential to make mine operators rethink the end of the pit life and adopt an innovative ISR approach to work toward a more complete recovery of value metals from existing pits.Citation:Kuhar, L L and Robinson, D J, 2016. An 8 ha trial landform was constructed in late 2009 at the Ranger Uranium Mine, located 250 km east of Darwin in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics of northern Australia. The objective of the trial, which comprises two surface cover types on a uniform two per cent slope, is to provide long-term data to guide the development by Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) of its landform closure strategy. The scope of the work program for the landform includes many aspects; however, this paper is focusing on run-off and erosion rates. The run-off and erosion rates are used to assess the long-term geomorphic stability by comparing measured with modelled export rates from a landform evolution model.Monitoring of wet season run-off is undertaken collaboratively by the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (ERISS) and ERA, on four purpose-instrumented 30 m by 30 m erosion plots. Continuous measurements are made in rectangular broad crested (RBC) flumes located at the outflow of each plot, of water level, turbidity (a surrogate for fine suspended sediment) and electrical conductivity (EC) (a surrogate for solutes). Each plot has a tipping bucket pluviometer located near the RBC flume. Bed load is collected monthly.This paper reports the findings of rainfall and bed load from the first two wet seasons (2009 - 2010 and 2010 - 2011) following construction. The field measured loads will be compared with the predictions made by the Cellular Automaton Evolutionary Slope and River (CAESAR) landform evolution model. Initial results indicate that predicted rates of sediment export from the CAESAR model are similar to measured export rates. This provides confidence in the capability of the model to predict stability of the future rehabilitated mine area, especially during the critical initial years following construction. Sampling errors result from heterogeneities within the lot under study. Within a rock mass in situ heterogeneity results in the geological nugget effect, which accounts for most of the natural variability. In broken rock, constitution and distribution heterogeneities are important. A major result of the constitution heterogeneity is the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) which is the smallest residual error that can be achieved. It cannot be eliminated, but can be minimised and refl ects the fact that the broken rock sampling process is never completely free of error. Together with other sampling errors, FSE contributes to the total nugget effect. The FSE for a sampling protocol can be evaluated using the so-called Gy equation. Its practical applications to low-grade gold ores have often been unsuccessful due to problems linking the FSE and minimum sampling mass and the defi nition of key parameters such as the liberation diameter. Well-designed sample protocols minimise the total sampling error and hence the nugget effect. Reduction of the nugget effect is a key requirement for all sampling programs whether related to exploration and resource evaluation, metallurgical test sampling, grade control or metallurgical plant sampling. This contribution reviews the relationship between heterogeneity, FSE and nugget effect in gold deposits; and emphasises the need for FSE management throughout the mine value chain.

WMC Resources Pty Ltd û Copper Uranium Division operates the large underground Olympic Dam Mine at Roxby Downs, South Australia. These operations mine and process the ore to produce refined copper, uranium oxide, gold and silver. In mid-1996, the company committed to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project (OEP) to expand production from 3.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (85 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal) to over 9.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (over 200 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal). Along with the increase in the ore production capacity of the underground mine and the surface ore handling and processing facilities, expansion of the backfill system was required. The target backfill placement rate was 2.0 million cubic metres of backfill per annum which was to be predominantly delivered as cemented aggregate fill (CAF). This paper discusses the engineering activities undertaken to assess and change the method of designing the required strength of fill exposures. In addition, the operational changes that were introduced to achieve the required fill quantities and the mix designs to meet the specified strengths, including the use of alternate binders, are discussed. This work resulted in a large increase in the fill placement rate and a reduction in the overall unit cost of fill.

Iron Road Limited is currently studying the feasibility of producing 20 Mt/a of high-grade (67 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 2.6 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate has been tested at a relatively coarse grind size of -106 ¦m. The preliminary flow sheet has been confirmed based on initial mine plans and comprehensive metallurgical testing across the range of mineralisation. Extensive Davis tube testing to predict magnetite recoveries has been conducted over the resource, however this was completed at settings different to the optimised settings developed in the metallurgical test work program.This paper outlines the development of an ore treatment simulation in SysCAD which utilises the mine production plan, the Davis tube test data from the resource, data from metallurgical test work and process design criteria to predict magnetite concentrate deliveries. Mineralogical data, including QEMScan results and metallurgical assessments, were a fundamental basis of the process models which enable predictions of concentrate yield and quality. Power and water requirements are also calculated within the model. SysCAD dynamic simulation has been used to assist with the design of the process plant and downstream infrastructure. Working in Australia’s harsh climate can have a significant impact on the health, safety and productivity of our teams, but is our working environment expected to be more prone to heat stress in the future? Climate modelling suggests that we are likely to encounter more frequent heatwaves and higher apparent temperature. Does this mean that our teams will be at greater risk of heat stress, and are we prepared to deal with the changes in our future climate and the potential impacts on our working population? This paper will review the recent research on climate and projected changes to all meteorological parameters that are important in understanding the likelihood of heat stress. The paper will also describe the challenges encountered in the management of heat stress in a workforce, and then outline a systematic approach to heat stress management that will allow you to assess your own risk and manage your day-to-day operations into the future.CITATION:Killip, C, 2015. Classification within the Inferred Resource category is based on geological judgement and the balance of extrapolation versus interpolation that the Competent Person is prepared to accept. These resources are typically drilled at spacings well in excess of the geostatistical range and at a density that is non-uniform. In many cases, a substantial proportion of the available data will be historical, and should be considered with more recent data sources. The provision of a robust geological model will increase the confidence in any resource estimate, and should be viewed as a critical component. The definition of Inferred Resources is of great importance to vein gold projects, since Indicated and Measured Resources generally require costly underground development for delineation. Indeed, many gold vein operations possess substantial quantities of Inferred Resources (>75 per cent) in their resource inventory both at project start-up and during production. This contribution explores a number of the key issues when using the Inferred Resource category and presents four recent case studies.

This paper examines how legislation and regulation can be external drivers of technical change in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy and how the industry can respond. Two examples are considered; the production of copper metal from concentrates and the cyanide process for gold production.The Clean Air Act (1970) in the USA initiated a wave of attempted innovations in the extractive metallurgy of processing copper sulfide concentrates to meet forthcoming standards on sulfur dioxide emissions. Interestingly, a satisfactory technical solution existed (flash smelting and gas capture) but had not been widely adopted.Nearly fifty years later the primary copper industry finds itself with new challenges. One major challenge is how to deal with the increasing level of arsenic in copper concentrates. Most countries impose an upper limit on arsenic in imported concentrate; typically, 0.5% As or less. Higher arsenic concentrates can be blended with cleaner ones to meet the limit, but this tactic cannot be used indefinitely as the average arsenic level of global concentrates rises inexorably. Further, smelters (often in urban locations) cannot be expected to deal with both ever-increasing arsenic in the feed and stricter restrictions on emissions and disposal. A rising “inventory” of primary copper deposits are already constrained from development by high arsenic concentrate. These deposits will need to be developed if future copper demand is to be met. An economic and technical solution to arsenic is needed. The gold industry may also face challenges in the use of cyanide, by far the dominant lixiviant used in gold and silver production. Public perception has driven restrictions on the use or transport of cyanide in some jurisdictions. History suggests that such pressure is only likely to increase. While there are several alternative lixiviants, none can yet match the utility and economics of cyanide.Such important issues will not be resolved by incremental change or new equipment items. They require development of new process technology - a tectonic event rather than an incremental change. It requires sustained effort (and expenditure) over decades and is very unlikely to result from “business as usual” for producers, suppliers or academics. Past major process developments were driven by a dire need for economic survival or by legislative change. Energy costs are steadily increasing worldwide while the availability and quality of water are becoming contentious issues between the users (municipalities/households, agriculture, manufacturing and mining). Refractory gold ore treatment - pressure oxidation, biological oxidation and roasting (ultra-fine grinding, or UFG, will not be discussed here as this process only reduces the particle size of the feed prior to cyanidation) - requires substantially more energy and water quantity and quality are vastly different compared to the standard and simple flow sheets used for treating non-refractory ores This paper will provide an overview of the energy and water requirements for treating refractory gold ores, a topic which does not appear to have been considered previously in the literature.CITATION:Roberto, F, Snyder, J, Dodd, J and Dunne, R, 2013. "Narrow vein mining can be loosely defined as mining operations involving orebodies with a true thickness of less than 4 m. Some authors have limited the term to steeper-dipping orebodies where the ore will rill under gravity. However, ænarrow veinÆ can also legitimately refer to some of the flatter orebodies, such as many of the platinum, chrome and gold deposits of Southern Africa, and several in Australasia including Bullen (at Norseman), Sunrise Dam, Telfer (Patterson, 1993) and the famous æflatmakesÆ at the Emperor Gold Mine in Fiji (Gordon and Harmse, 1993). Where the orebody dip is less than about 40¦ additional effort is usually required to remove the broken ore, including the use of scrapers, hydraulic monitors or remote-operated excavators (Tombs, Buckingham and Hancock, 2008).Working in such narrow orebodies presents particular operational and geomechanics challenges. A range of mining methods have been developed or adapted to exploit narrow orebodies including:cut-and-fill,narrow vein bench or longhole stoping,Alimak stoping,shrinkage stoping, and methods for shallow dipping orebodies (including Airleg and mechanised methods).The paper discusses some of the advantages and disadvantages of each method with a focus on geotechnical aspects including mining sequence options, stress management, ground support requirements, dilution and recovery.CITATION:Sandy, M P and Albrecht, J B, 2012. Bacterial oxidation technology was successfully applied in a mine site pilot plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrates. The bacterial culture was proven capable of selectively breaking down the refractory sulphide minerals to release the gold. Gold extractions greater than 90 per cent were possible when oxidised concentrate was leached with cyanide solution. The pilot plant was designed using data scaled up from laboratory testing and sized for transport by standard vehicles. The bacterial culture used to break down the refractory gold-bearing mineral was a natural mixed culture able to withstand temperatures up to 55¦C, thus making the technology particularly suitable for use in Australian and in some North American gold mining regions. The pilot plant was operated at the mine site over a six month period. Performance of the bacterial oxidation technology under site conditions was as predicted from the laboratory testing. It was demonstrated that the culture was robust under normal site condi- tions and that the culture could withstand wide variations in the feed and the operating conditions, while still achieving satisfactory oxidation levels. The technology was able to be utilised by site operators and supervisors with minimum intervention. Design data for a commercial facility was collected for a number of different concentrate samples and a feasibility study completed. Estimated capital and operating cost have been obtained.

Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte-Hannan's North area N. and E. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked contrast to the pyritetelluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related.These highly siliceous telluride-free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile lodes, while possessing an apparent overall relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E. dipping strike faults.INTRODUCTIONThe Mt. Charlotte-Hannan's North area lies N. and E. of the town of Kalgoorlie and is separated from the Golden Mile by the Golden Pike fault. The orebodies discussed lie in an area approximately 3 miles long by 1 mile wide (Fig. 1).The area includes the site of the original discovery of gold in the Kalgoorlie district in 1893. There have been numerous mining operations over the years, the bulk of the production coming from two orebodies, Mt. Charlotte and Hannan's North. These have provided approximately 900,000 tons of the 1,100,000 tons of ore mined in the area.Production to date from the principal orebodies in the area has been as follows.1. Downhole Assay tools are a geophysical method to collect an instigated response from the material surrounding a drill hole and deliver a multielement proxy-assay. They were first tested in the Pilbara at the turn of this century, however since 2011 they have seen a more focused testing and implementation regime with multiple companies across multiple Pilbara mine sites. The increase in the volume of data has led to advances in the measurements and significant improvements to the efficiency of the calibration process. Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation Analysis (PFTNA) downhole assay tools collect gamma photon spectra which are characteristic of elemental signatures. One of the key components of the technique is calibrating the spectral signatures to lab assays. Each tool is slightly different due to the organic nature of the crystal detector and therefore responds slightly differently. Environment and hole conditions as well as ore characteristics are among other external influencing factors. Thus, a unique calibration is required for each tool. In addition, not all elements are measured directly, but some are actually characterised by proxy, meaning that if the signal-to-noise ratio for an element is small, it may be easier to identify the mineral or geology in which that element is found and thus infer the concentration of the element. These proxies may differ for each site or geology type within a site. There is a large advantage to build a unique calibration per tool at each site rather than a universal one to be used across the whole province. This then delivers the accuracy and precision of measurements that mining companies require for modern operations. Early work with the tool required several thousand metres of calibration data and several weeks of analysis to build each calibration. This process has now been streamlined to significantly reduce the amount of data required and the analysis time to make it much easier to introduce new tools to a site with an existing model or to create new models. This paper details the calibration process, illustrating the increasing accuracy of the models as training data are acquired as well as the methods for transferring a calibration from one tool to another.

In terms of underground tunnelling in metres advance per capita, Australasia compares well with the best world performers. This is because of the large number of metalliferous mines, coalmines and civil tunnelling projects, with the Australian tunnel advance for civil and mining projects exceeding 625?km/a. In terms of hard rock quarry extraction, Australia produces approximately 200?Mt/a of aggregates, roadbase, fill material and specialist rock products from its quarries, which equates to approximately 8?t/capita. Australian mining and tunnelling contractors are also of world standard and are used to excavating in a variable range of ground conditions in a competitive environment. One author has been involved in tunnel and underground space planning and quarrying in Australia for the past 25 years and predicts that, over the next 20 years, there will be a major swing towards underground space for commercial uses. This paper identifies the potential uses of underground commercial excavation and the planning and geotechnical challenges for the future. Underground quarrying creates new opportunities to extend existing quarries within their urban footprint with minimum impact on the surrounding community. Investigations by the authors reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. However, cities such as Helsinki have been planned in detail to utilise the rock resources beneath them. A cover of inert material overlain by topsoil is required over compacted, seawater-neutralised red mud, a waste product from the refining of bauxite to produce alumina. The cover is to be revegetated, and it is necessary to demonstrate that the potential evapotranspirative-driven uptake of salts from the seawater-neutralised red mud will not impact the revegetation. An instrumented column was designed and constructed to test the evaporation-driven uptake of salts from compacted red mud into an overlying cover material with a thickness limited to 600 mm. The PVC column is 1.2 m high, with a 200 mm internal diameter. The column is instrumented with up to ten of each of moisture, suction, salinity and temperature sensors, together with a data logger, designed and manufactured at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia. The sensors were installed through the wall of the column at various depth intervals, with each set of sensors located at quarter points around the circumference of the column. Two pressure transducers were installed in the column to monitor the change of water level due to rainfall and evaporation. The column was filled with compacted red mud to a depth of 600 mm overlain by 600 mm of cover material, both sourced from the Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) site in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. The column is installed on a building roof at UQ, alongside a weather station, and will be subjected to the prevailing weather conditions for up to 1 year in the first instance, during which time the weather conditions and sensor responses will be continuously monitored. Quality control (QC) of reverse circulation drill sampling commonly involves regular duplicate subsampling to monitor the extent of imprecision or random error in the subsampling system.
