The Misima open pit gold mine is a 20Mt per annum operation. Blasthole drilling is used to sample all material at a uniform 5m square pattern, and representative sub- sampling of the blast holes enables assay samples to be collected over the full 10m bench height. Samples are assayed for gold, silver and copper at the Company's laboratory at the mine site and the assays are provided to geologists as a written assay report and on floppy disc. Surveyed blasthole locations and assay results are transferred via personal computers (PCs) to a SUN mini-computer where results are stored by bench, blasthole assays are kriged, and plot files are created. A geologist selects grade boundaries from the kriged data, adjusting the boundaries towards the raw blasthole data where hard boundaries are recognised. Surveyors peg the resultant boundaries in the pit using a system of colour-coded pegs to display the different material types. A daily plan also shows boundaries and face positions.

Landscape interpretation, geology and mining history is being successfully used to explore options for sustainable community tourism product development. Recent work by the author in Europe and Australia has indicated the value of adding and producing interpretive information about mine and quarry locations - both active and inactive. This work has allowed for the branding and development of new sustainable community tourism products based on the landscape, folklore, mine and geological heritage.   Communities in rural areas are seeking new opportunities to sustain their local economies. Using a relatively new phenomenon called geotourism as a starting point; they have developed themed products connected to walking/cycling guides, interpretive panels and visitor centres. These themes can be linked to geology, archaeology, botany, local history and to industrial heritage sites such as old mines, to generate local employment. This new geotourism approach has successfully brought a new and greater audience to discover the value of geology and mining history.   Communities have established a unique place for themselves within the tourism marketplace using the geotourism brand. Other communities with an established tourism product are also now using geological and mine heritage via geotourism to rebrand and meet changing global trends. The pooling of resources under the banner of geotourism has led to cost effective marketing, targeting and promotion of products.   Geotourism has emerged strongly in Europe, North America and China in the last decade. The Australian minerals industry now has an opportunity to implement this new branding concept to assist and benefit the communities in which they run their activities. Communities can also take advantage of the potential to develop a sustainable geotourism business around a past or present mineral industry in their vicinity.

Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. Even strong lineations have been ignored. The total world steel production in 1998 amounted to approximately 780 000 000 t. The share of electric steelmaking was in the range of 35 per cent and is expected to increase further to over 40 per cent of the world's production within the next ten years. As electric steelmaking is primarily based on the use of scrap and as it is progressing more and more into higher steel grades the need for low-residual metallics will become increasingly important. Consequently, the demand for scrap substitute material will increase, reflected in the world wide spate of interest for DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) and HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron). The increased significance of DRI/HBI as a substitute for steel scrap has obviously emanated also from its comparatively lower and more predictable costs per ton and definable chemistry. In 1998 already 37 million tons of DRI/HBI were globally produced.

"Mine waste storages including tailings dams and waste rock dumps represent arguably the biggest risk on a mine site from both physical and geochemical viewpoints, related firstly to structural stability and the consequences of failure and secondly from potential on-going seepage or run-off of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). The risks are most likely to increase during operations and continue through the closure and post-closure phases, with the waste storages likely to be the most difficult features to resolve in the mine closure process. Contaminated water quality from tailings dams and waste rock dumps can require treatment "in perpetuity" at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. The problem is increasing with ever larger mine operations and waste generation volumes. This paper identifies leading practice methodologies in planning and operating mines and process plants to minimise the risks from tailings storages and how this might also affect waste rock management and even the design of mine excavations. These methodologies require a "big-picture" approach to develop an understanding of the overall issues and identify synergies between the different operational areas on a mine site that can reduce overall risk. With a conservative approach and realistic allowance for future costs it is possible to facilitate decisions at the mine planning stage that can reduce risk and save cost over the long term. This is in contrast to the common approach where each operational area is looking to minimise its own costs with a short-term view. Incorrect mine methodologies can be developed by allowing net present value (NPV) accounting methods to trivialise future closure issues.Methodologies discussed include: Integrated Waste Management - Significant structural improvements to tailings dams can be achieved if the structures can be incorporated into the waste rock dumps. Risk of AMD can also be reduced by utilising the tailings and waste rock effectively. This could go even further to consider the placement of wastes to limit mine void environmental issues; Process Optimisation - Water quality and the nature of potential tailings dam structures can be highly influenced by the geo-chemistry of the tailings. This can be modified by processing, where simple changes such as maintaining separate streams of geo-chemically different tailings rather than recombining them or by initiating further processing to remove problematic minerals such as sulphides; Enhancing Geophysical Properties - The geochemical performance of waste repositories can be greatly influenced by the geophysical properties of the stored materials, particularly the air-water characteristics, which are influenced by particle size, density and permeability. The geotechnical properties can be enhanced by strategic paddock dumping, blending and compaction.These methodologies are demonstrated by case histories.CITATION:Brett, D, 2013. Stockyard operations are governed by the interaction between the different disciplines required to successfully schedule and control the supply chain of raw material through the stockyard in combination with the effectivity of the operation of the stockyard equipment. The system demonstrates a proven technology for implementing a centralised operation of full unmanned stockyard equipment, using a high precision absolute positioning system based on a Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers in combination with 3D rangefinders. The system implementation maps the surface profile of the stockyard inventory and allows in combination with proprietary algorithms for full operation of the stockyard machines without on-board operators. The operational impact of delayering the process by moving to a centralised operation is examined, together with the combined effect on the overall safety in the stockyard as a result of a change in reliance on operator skill dependencies. Average performance gains range from 10–20 per cent. The performance of the automation system is related to a consistency and reliability of uniform operation, which has an impact on the life expectancy and the effectiveness of the equipment. The effects of having instantaneous and correct information about the stockyard inventory volume measurement are investigated in relation towards spot price trading in current fast reacting markets.CITATION:Stefansen, R, 2017. The Tennant Creek goldfield is situated in the Northern Territory, 360 miles north of Alice Springs, or a tot~l distance of 1,300 miles north of Adelaide, and 600 miles south of Darwin. The auriferous area extends 20 miles north and south by 50 miles east and west. The overland telegraph line and the AIice Springs-Darwin road pass through the centre of the field.HISTORY, PRODUCTIONThe country comprising the goldfield was traversed by J. MacDouall Stuart between 1859 and 1861 in the course of his last three exploring expeditions, which terminated respectively at Attack Creek, Newcastle Waters and at the mouth of the Adelaide River. The explorer named Tennant Creek and also Mount Samuel, on which mining operations are now in progress. The overland telegraph line was completed in 1872 and a relaying station established eight miles north of the site of the present township. There was no other settlement in the adjacent country prior to the opening up of the goldfield.Gold was discovered in 1926 on what is known as the Great Northern lease, three miles north of the township. The field was remote; the nearest plant at which gold ore could be treated was at Peterborough, in South Australia, 1,186 miles distant, and it was not until 1932 that the development of the field actively commenced.The production of the field from its inception to December 31, 1939, was 57,895 QZ. of gold, valued at £522,000, recovered from 61,793 long tons of ore, won from 98 mines. In 1940 seven of these mines had reached depths between 100 ft. and 230 ft., the workings of the majority being less than 60 ft. below surface.TOPOGRAPHY, WATERThe country is traversed by parallel and sub-parallel lines of hills trending east and west and rising to altitudes varying from 50 ft. to 100 ft. above the intervening valleys. The low ranges and isolated hills owe their survival to the resistance offered by their indurated, harder rocks to erosion which has removed the softer intervening formations. Their elevation and area depend to a considerable extent upon the presence of; and, the size of, the more or less exposed haematite formations, or are due to the influence of extensive siliceous dykes which traverse the locality.Watercourses head from the hills and either flood out on the flats within a short distance, or in a few cases follow longer courses to the northward. The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the short wave infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420 nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a quartz-sericite-pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

Arrium (previously OneSteel) initiated a desktop study into the performance of its hematite ore beneficiation plant in early 2010. The beneficiation plant utilises jig concentrators and spirals to upgrade low-grade hematite recovered during mining at the Iron Duke (ID) mine site located 60 km south-west of Whyalla. The study, conducted in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, identified a number of opportunities for improvement, which were validated by a series of sampling campaigns and a pilot plant trial. One of the major recommendations was to upgrade the ultra-fines processing circuit from a single-stage spiral circuit to a three-stage circuit. The upgrade of the ultra-fines circuit was estimated to provide a significant increase in fines production and grade.In order to capitalise on the strong iron price at the time of the project, Arrium decided to utilise a fast-tracked approach to design, construct and commission the processing equipment required to achieve the improvements identified. This decision introduced the risk of missing critical steps in the project development process, which could have potentially resulted in major issues in latter stages of the project. In addition to the challenges introduced due to the expedited time line for project completion, this project presented unique challenges due to its brownfield nature. One such challenge faced was the integration of the new equipment and control system software.Furthermore, the importance of the ID ore beneficiation plant (OBP) contribution to the companyÆs export commitments meant the upgrade work had to occur while minimising disruption to normal operation. This decision presented a set of new challenges to an already complex project. One such challenge was the need to build and commission the new spiral circuit in isolation from the operating plant.The aim of this paper will be to highlight some of the challenges faced in a complex brownfield project such as the ID OBP upgrade and discuss how they were managed to enable the successful commissioning of the process in early 2012.CITATION:Selvapandian E and Barr, R, 2013. A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.

The mining industry continues to be a major driver of the Australian economy generating over A$130 billion in export earnings in 2008/2009. However, the industry has been cited as a significant contributor to green house gas emissions. Australia's proposed carbon trading scheme, the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) will financially impact on mining operations; this calls for a holistic planning approach for mining operations taking into account the impact of the emissions trading scheme. Since carbon trading is a new area of study, particularly within Australia, the quantitative effect of the CPRS on the mining industry is uncertain and current mine planning practices do not directly consider emissions. This paper presents results of the study into the impact of the CPRS on a hypothetical large scale open pit operation, using a spreadsheet model based on linear programming and simulation. By varying the production rates, life of mine (LOM), carbon price and ore grades among other variables several scenarios were simulated to determine the impact of emissions trading scheme on the net present value of the project. This study found that the adoption of the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme could impact mining operations in Australia by a three per cent to six per cent reduction in net present value, for carbon credit costs of $25/t to $50/t respectively. While the six per cent reduction in net present value for a mining operation is significant, rising fuel prices have had a similar effect in recent years. The most energy-intensive processes are the milling circuit and the flotation concentrator circuit. These processes are jointly responsible for up to 60 per cent of the total emissions, depending on the production rate and the level of offshore processing conducted. Clearly, the introduction of the CPRS makes it is imperative for mining companies to assess the impact of carbon emissions on a mining project during mine planning.

The Prince Lyell orebody at Mount Lyell Mine has a rich mining history commencing with the open pit in 1935, which transitioned underground in 1972. Between 1972 and 2014 a total of 64 Mt was mined underground as the mine extended from 210 m to 1100 m below surface. As the depth increased, three separate transitions in the mining method occurred to meet the changing geotechnical conditions, ore grade, mining costs and metal prices. The first was open stoping with pillar recovery in 1972, followed by front caving and longitudinal sublevel caving (1995), and finally transverse sublevel caving (2004 to 2014). This paper provides an overview of key geotechnical and planning milestones relating to the evolution of the mining method including underground stability, gravity flow, cavability and subsidence. Key aspects of the mine design, geotechnical parameters and rock mass response are described and critiqued with reference to observational, numerical and empirical methods.CITATION:Sharrock, G B and Cuello, D A, 2016. To form a true picture of the early history of Queensland, we must think of white settlement advancing like an incoming tide, wave by wave; each wave lapping ahead a little further than the last. The credit for opening up the country belongs to a large number of pioneers, each of whom pushed out just a little further than his predecessors.Contrary to what one might expect, Rockhampton district was settled by overlanders from the south and not from the ocean side. When the Archers, the pioneers of the Rockhampton district, reached Gracemere in 1853, settlement had already made its way down the valley of the Dawson River; for it was from Leith Hay's station at Rannes (a few miles below Mount Morgan) that the Archers advanced northward into the unknown, to find the river that the explorer, Ludwig Leichhardt, had told them must enter the sea somewhere near the Tropic of Capricorn.The Archers travelled northward from Rannes up the valley of the Dee, coming out on the edge of the Razorback Range not very far from the point at which the Dawson Valley Highway drops over into Poison Creek. (Their diary records the bearings from a lookout point to various peaks around Rockhampton, and to-day, by plotting back from these peaks, we can determine the exact spot at which they descended on to the Fitzroy Flats.) We can be certain, then, that they must have been the first white men to set eyes on Mount Morgan; though to them it would have seemed to be nothing more than an insignificant hill...

Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route.The Australian Atomic Energy Commission is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and· calcination-reduction steps. Solvent extraction from sulphate media is also under study with a view to developing a process to produce a nuclear grade product at the mine treatment plant site.

HYL developed a direct reduction process (DR) that does not require a reformer; it is called self-reforming process. Typically, direct reduction processes based on natural gas utilise a reformer unit to transform the natural gas into reducing agents (hydrogen and carbon monoxide). The reforming reactions are: CH4+H20-?3H2+CO CH4 + CO2 - 2H2 + 2CO These reforming units require a catalyst agent to promote the kinetics of the reforming reactions. The catalyst for these reactions is typically a metallic element such as nickel in a ceramic matrix; iron is also an excellent catalyst for the reforming reactions.

In this paper, some of the constraints to applying bioremediation to the decontamination of polluted soils are introduced. Particularly, attention has been given to those associated with the geology of the polluted site. Areas which require further research have been addressed and indicate that geologists will play a key role, alongside microbial ecologists and engineers, in designing and implementing bioremediation strategies.

The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3 m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.   The tailings impoundment is built with an underdrainage system that collects groundwaters and waters that seep through the impoundment. The embankment and impoundment are both built to withstand the Maximum Credible Earthquake and the Probable Maximum Flood. Tailings are treated to remove cyanide and to decrease metal solubility to reduce long term risk to water quality after mining. A state-of-the-art water treatment plant is utilised to treat water from the underdrainage system and water decanted from the top of the tailings pond and stormwaters to remove residual cyanide and metals to extremely high standards with a great deal of reliability and at reasonable cost. Closure of the facility addresses long term post mining water quality issues, and rehabilitation of the area with wildlife habitat as a priority.

The development of research activities at Risdon and the implementing of a policy of instrumentation in plant processes have, in recent years, entailed a considerable increase in research staff and created an urgent need for more space and modern laboratory facilities. The existing laboratories have been in use for 25 years and are now inadequate. New buildings have been authorized.The new buildings will comprise, firstly, a laboratory building of three floors giving a totai .floor space of approximately 11,000 sq.ft., and a pilot plant building as an annexe to the laboratory building, of approximately 4,900 sq.ft. The laboratory building will accommodate from 20 to 22 research workers, and additional plant operatives will be used for the control of processes in the pilot plant building. The new buildings are designed to provide facilities for three principal functions; the investigation and improvementof existing processes, the development of new processes up to the pilot plant stage, and the control and maintenance of instruments.LOCALITY AND ORIENTATION OF BUILDINGSThe site of the buildings is elevated ground on the eastern side of the main plant, near the main entrance and general office building.
