The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. Industrial minerals by definition are minerals used as part of an industrial process and usually are one of a number of components, eg finely ground Limestone is an extender in the manufacture of paint. They are normally non-metallic and non-fuel, but like all generalisations there are a number of exceptions. Take rutile û a source of titanium, a metal and also the raw material in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment. Industrial minerals under this general definition include construction and agricultural minerals. They are included in the same grouping, principally because their sources are similar and in many cases the raw material, example limestone, can be multi-functional. Calcium carbonate raw materials such as limestone, are used in a wide range of applications from industry as an inert filler, to agriculture as a 'lime' source and to construction and as an important component in the manufacture of cement. As far as this paper is concerned I will avoid discussing the agricultural or construction applications, including burnt lime production.

Declining metal prices over the last few years have reduced the number of new metallurgical plants being built and limited opportunities for introducing new processes. However, technological advances are still being made. With increasing economic pressures, the emphasis is now on reducing unit costs by making equipment larger and through use of technologies with lower operating costs. This trend can be seen in the increasing size of grinding mills and flotation cells used in recent plant designs and in the adoption of HPGR crushing as an alternative to SAG milling. Few new technologies achieve widespread introduction until there are clear economic or operational drivers. These might currently include: ò          increasingly stringent environmental standards; ò          availability of exotic materials for equipment construction; ò          increasingly sophisticated instrumentation and control systems; ò          the need to treat increasingly refractory oretypes; and ò          the length of supply routes to many new plants. As a result of these drivers, a number of new and revitalised technologies will get increasing prominence in the design of new operations, such as: ò          use of ultrafine milling equipment such as MIM's Isamill for treatment of refractory gold ore concentrates; ò          use of thiourea as an alternative for cyanide in sensitive locations; ò          novel hydrometallurgical routes for treating base metal ores in remote locations; ò          paste thickening for tailings deposition; and intensive cyanidation of gravity concentrate

Picking up abandoned mining tenements and looking to recover remnant resources around old operations is an opportunity that comes with its own challenges and risks. Reliance on information released to government departments (such as the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) in Western Australia) by the previous owners, can compound the risk.This paper explores Alto Metals Ltd’s Lord Nelson and Lord Henry deposits and surrounds near the town of Sandstone in Western Australia. The Lord Nelson and Lord Henry open pits produced around 2 Mt of ore for over 250 koz of gold during production between 1999 and 2010. There has been no further work carried out in the area between 2010 and 2016. The deposits are open at depth and along strike.Alto Metals picked up the tenements in 2016 and has subsequently re-estimated remnant resources around Lord Nelson and Lord Henry, and publicly reported updated Mineral Resources in accordance with the JORC Code 2012.All of the information was manually compiled from data released to the DMP and annual reports. This paper highlights the challenges and risks arising from this data compilation, geological interpretation, re-estimation and classification process, together with future opportunities and challenges for further developing the area.CITATION:Olssen, L M, Graindorge, J and Jia, C, 2017. Interpreting the behaviour of granular material and simulating the gravity flow are complex processes in cave mining methods. In this paper, a new Cellular Automata based code – FlowSim – is used as a flexible tool to simulate the gravity flow and subsidence zone in block caving mines. The simulation results of the gravity flow model in a real scaled mine as well as a scaled physical model are presented in this study. In this research, FlowSim was first calibrated at a mine, based on the information obtained from smart markers. These markers were located in five points of the second block of the Esmeralda sector, at the El Teniente copper mine, Codelco, Chile. The calibration was performed with the objective of reducing the discrepancy between the extraction zone defined by markers in the mine and FlowSim outputs. Regarding the mine data, FlowSim was calibrated with the minimum error of ten per cent between real and simulated results. Then, the calibrated FlowSim model was used to simulate the flow behaviour of a scaled physical model. This model was constructed in the Block Caving Laboratory of the University of Chile to scale down the same block of the Esmeralda sector with the scale of 1:200. The FlowSim outputs show that this software enables the simulation of the gravity flow of the scaled model with less than five per cent discrepancy in grade and dilution entry to the drawpoints. According to the obtained results, this paper recommends FlowSim as an appropriate tool which can improve the design of production level in block caving and can enhance the prediction of the subsidence zone and dilution entry.CITATION:Castro, R, Hekmat, A, Fuentes, M, Armijo, F and Rodriguez, F, 2016. Grade uncertainty can have a number of important implications for a mining operation. One of the most significant risks in not considering grade uncertainty in planning is the over or under allocation of processing or mining capacity when compared to realised grades. This could lead to wasted capital expenditure or missed opportunities to add value. This paper demonstrates a method that optimises production capacity and mining schedules in the presence of grade uncertainty. Applying this method to the case study of a nickel deposit recommended a reduction in processing capacity, an increase in mining capacity and more extensive utilisation of stockpiles than optimisations completed with traditional methods. As a result, average NPV improvements of between seven per cent and 27 per cent were gained.

The mechanical properties of rock samples of identical lithologicalcomposition may vary significantly due to existence of materialdiscontinuities. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the effect of material discontinuities on rock sample mechanical properties. The investigations consisted of detecting discontinuities, observing the failure mechanisms during uniaxial compressive strength tests, and analysing of the factors affecting the strength. A non-destructive testing method has been adopted to assist in thedetection of discontinuities. Laboratory testing proved that fractures leading to failures initiated on the detected discontinuities. The location, orientation, size, density and extent of the discontinuities contribute to different modes of failure and these affect the mechanical parameters of rock samples. Four modes of failure were distinguished for hard and brittlecylindrical rock samples. These modes were referred to as simple shear failure, multiple shear failure, multiple fracturing and vertical splitting. To evaluate the effect of discontinuities on mechanical parameters, the ratio of uniaxial compressive to tensile (Brazilian) strength was calculated and analysed for the different modes of failure. It was found that the value of the ratio depended on the mode of sample failure. The lowest value of the ratio was observed for shear mode of failure and the highest for vertical splitting mode of failure.

Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. Due to the steep geo-thermal gradient in Bowen Basin area, as underground coalmines reach increased depths of extraction, the Bulk Air Cooling (BAC) requirements will increase as opposed to cooling the workplace using the ventilation means alone. One such mine has already been using a 4 MW surface BAC plant for the last six years to manage the working temperatures with reduced cooling efficiency as the mine expands. Due to the horizontal nature of the longwall mine layout, distances from the working face to intake shafts are rapidly expanding to over 6 km as opposed to the vertical mine layout of a hard rock mine. To improve the positional cooling efficiency, reduced panel pressure differentials, improved rib emission gas management, and intake dust management, small diameter intake shafts were located on the inbye end of production panels and halfway up the development panels with localised mobile small BAC plants. This paper summarises the results of extensive underground data of this innovative cooling concept for development and retreating longwall face heat management compared to a larger remote BAC plant.CITATION:Belle, B, Brouwer, D and Wild, P, 2017. As one of the four basic sciences, the study of geology is intrinsically worthy as a means of increasing fundamental knowledge of the behaviour and evolution of the universe. Geological knowledge can also be translated into practical outcomes for society such as resource discovery and protection of the environment. Australia has a long tradition of providing very high quality geoscience programs to prepare graduates for a range of occupations. We are, however, reaching a nexus in the way universities should or can deliver engaging programs. This has been triggered by the rapid evolution of the digital world (the Internet of Things), new technologies, unprecedented access to information, better understanding of the processes by which we learn and adapt our thinking, growing complexity in the problems we must face or opportunities to grasp, and university funding models. Designing education programs for the next generation of geologists extends far beyond tinkering with syllabuses. We must develop skills sets that will allow graduates to work in rapidly changing landscapes, but in doing so may have to sacrifice content to build capability in our graduates. Whereas universities must respond to changing demands on graduates by ensuring degree programs contain an appropriate balance of material and high quality of delivery, industry and government must also fulfil their responsibilities to provide additional training programs for graduates to assist their rapid transition into independent professionals. This paper examines various educational issues being considered in developing the new Decadal Plan for the Earth Sciences, and reflects on directions that education is heading in many of our universities.CITATION:Cohen, D R, 2017. Enhancing the understanding of gravity flow in caving operations is a key factor in the design, operation and success of caving methods. Consequently, much research has been performed to increase knowledge about gravity flow. Many valuable theories have been gained from different research approaches, which include physical modelling, numerical modelling and a limited number of full-scale tests. Recent advances in technology have allowed Codelco Chile to carry out trials using Smart Markers technology. This technology was used in Esmeralda mine’s Block-2 at El Teniente mine from August 2012 to January 2015. This paper aims to determine the characteristics of the extraction zone and obtain the data that will allow greater understanding of gravity flow for design and draw control purposes.The collected data from recovered markers were analysed using a linear interpolation of both the initial position of the markers and drawbell accumulated drawn tonnage. For each drawpoint in the trial, the regularity or irregularity of flow was analysed based on the recovered markers and the drawn tonnage. Correspondingly, the relationship between flow characteristics and observed fragmentation in drawpoints was analysed. The gravity flow of the Smart Markers revealed that current drawpoint spacing provides the interaction conditions of adjacent flow zones. However, it is possible to increase the drawpoint spacing while allowing caved rock to be extracted from the major and minor apexes.The results of this research also verified that full-scale test data are the predominant factor in the production level design and production control at El Teniente mine.CITATION:Garcés, D, Viera, E, Castro, R and Meléndez, M, 2016. The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. As an example, both the abundance of sulfate minerals and sulfur isotope patterns reflect the development of periods of anoxic conditions over time, with major intervals of anoxia reflected by a virtual lack or low abundance of sulfate minerals in volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits in the Mesoarchean to the Palaeoproterozoic, and shorter intervals since.CITATION:Huston, D L, Eglington, B, Pehrsson, S, Piercey, S and Doublier, M, 2015. Gold placers in the Nokomai and Nevis valleys are dominantly Quaternary in age. They occur mainly in western tributaries of the upper Nevis, eastern tributaries of the middle and upper Nokomai, and in the trunk valleys themselves. Placer gold in both valleys is dominantly a-phase Au-Ag-Hg alloy. Au-Ag alloy is absent or rare in most of the deposits, except in the lower Nokomai. Alpha-Au-Ag-Hg alloy is typically coarse-grained (up to 2 cm), angular, and rarely flattened or folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and psuedo-hexagonal crystal-pluck cavities are common. Fluvial transport distance predicted from the maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag-Hg alloy particles is typically less than 10-20 km. Coarse (up to 2 cm) cinnabar is commonly associated with the Au-Ag-Hg alloy, and both were probably derived from hydrothermal sources in western tributaries ofthe upper Nevis and eastern tributaries of the upper Nokomai. Minor secondary Au-Ag-Hg alloy occurs locally in the lower Nokomai, where it coats or cements detrital a-phase Au-Ag-Hg and Au-Ag alloy particles. Au-Ag alloy dominates over Au-Ag-Hg alloy in the lower half of the lower Nokomai alluvial plain and gravel of a raised channel incised into semischist basement adjacent to the plain. The Au-Ag alloy is rounded and commonly flattened and folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and pluck cavities are rare, and a fluvial transport distance of 25-40 km is estimated from maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag alloy particles. The Au-Ag alloy, three types of gamet, magnetite, clinozoisite and well foliated schist boulders in the abandoned channel are not found in the pumpellyite-actinolite facies bedrock in the Nokomai. These components were derived from greenschist facies schist and sedimentary sources in Otago, many tens of kilometers north of the Nokomai catchment. They were transported to the Nokomai either in Wakatipu Glacier till or fluvio-glacial outwash that entered the valley via Nokomai Saddle, the confluence with the Mataura, or both.

A comprehensive analysis of rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging: interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcore is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure. Both solution types rely on constant orientations (orientational stability) of the selected structure, but the internal solution actually provides its own test of orientational stability. External solutions are the norm in outcropping situations and internal solutions are invaluable in blind situations. In blind situations sequential "internal then external" solutions can be used respectively to provide a reference structure and then use this for subsequent external solutions at individual points downhole. Blind prospects can now be drilled and interpreted as easily as outcropping prospects. Each solution type has its own optimum requirements. External solutions are ambiguous for certain orientational relationships between the drillhole and the reference structure (for example, a perpendicular relationship), hence drillholes in which external solutions are planned should be designed to avoid these orientations. Internal solutions are ambiguous for straight drill paths, and are most unambiguously resolved when the drill path attains maximum drillhole dimensionality, that is, it occupies a wide variety of orientations in 3D space; hence drillholes in which internal solutions are planned should be designed as combinations of non-parallel holes or as individual strongly curved holes. For both solution types an understanding of the kind of structural fertility required leads to intelligent design of drill paths, which is termed structural drill targeting. It is distinct from spatial drill targeting, which is the process which defines and (x,y,z) point-or volume-target. Effective design of drilling programs requires both structural and spatial targeting. The external and internal solutions for vectorial parameters are implemented via (1) visual (qualitative), (2) stereographic, or (3) core orienting frame procedures. Each of these has its own advantages. Stereographic procedures have been simplified via the erection of a drillcore reference frame in which three fundamental angles are defined, and the formulation of an all-inclusive set of stereographic recipes for determining orientations from the measurement of these angles. Non- vectorial structural parameters comprise an ad hoc array of useful measures which are simply described by numbers. Examples are angles between structures, and density of structures. Such parameters (some of which provide useful vectors toward ore bodies) are invaluable in drillcore because they can be measured and recorded rapidly, without determining the orientation of the core. In a summary, non-oriented drillcore can now be structurally mapped exactly as if it were outcrop. Interpretation of the significant volume of unique structural information which is beginning to flow from this system can be optimised by using, in addition to the conventional cross section and longditudinal section, three new modes of presentation. The natural cross section is that section in space normal to a principal structure of interest. It is a section in which it is advisable to drill to obtain certain structural information, and in which the results need to be presented. A newly defined unique cross sectional orientational symbol is recommended for dramatic improvement in the quality of information presented in cross sections. Stacked level maps are a powerful adjunct to cross sections.

At present the source of virgin iron for steel produced in New Zealand is titanomagnetite extracted from titaniferous beachsands. Some of these beachsand deposits contain extractable quantities of ilmenite as well as titanomagnetite and both minerals represent challenging sources of vanadium and titanium products in addition to iron. This study looks at some theoretical aspects of smelting these ores directly with coal rather than with electric power, and takes into consideration the properties of the raw materials, the thermodynamics of possible process routes and the background of the economics involved.

Not only do epithermal gold deposits provide many challenges in estimating mineral resources, the complexities of these deposits also provide technical challenges in assessing appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as social and environmental planning and management. The characteristics of epithermal gold deposits include being highly variable with respect to geometry and gold grade distribution, the presence of other economic contributors, mineralogy, texture, rock strength, weathering and alteration overprint. These characteristics influence the economic value of mining projects in an interlinked manner. Consequently, successful exploitation of epithermal deposits requires a holistic approach, coupled with the effective integration of geological data to meet all aspects of mine development decision-making. This paper presents examples of the key technical challenges encountered in estimating and mining epithermal deposits. The REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry) stream sediment geochemistry database of open file mining company data, managed by GNS Science, was recently made accessible via the internet (http://maps.gns.cri.nz/website/minmap/). REGCHEM provides coverage of selected elements in mineral rich areas of New Zealand. Analysis of REGCHEM data highlights problems with inconsistencies between different surveys in terms of sampling methods, number and types of elements analysed, analytical techniques and detection limits. New, consistent multi-element geochemical surveys with national coverage are required. To test sampling, analytical and data treatment techniques for the new surveys, a pilot stream sediment geochemical survey was carried out in the Thames area, Hauraki Goldfield. Seventy samples were collected in an area of 220 km2 representing about one sample every 3 km2. The samples were analysed for 50 elements, mostly by XRF.   Regional patterns are apparent in the concentrations of some elements. Several elements, such as As, Cd, Cu, K, Pb, Sb, Se, and Zn exhibit anomalous concentrations mainly in the western part of the study area, related to Au-Ag-Zn-Pb-Cu epithermal quartz veins and porphyry Cu occurrences in hydrothermally altered andesitic terrane.   Mercury is anomalous in southern samples, reflecting cinnabar occurrences in the Kauaeranga valley (eg Mangakirikiri), and the occurrence of cinnabar as a late stage mineral in some of the Thames epithermal veins. Ba and U are anomalous in the eastern samples, and these anomalies are probably related to the presence of rhyolitic rocks in the eastern part of the project area.
