The methods employed for the determination of oxides and oxygen in ferrous materials may be roughly classed in two groups, "wet" methods and "hot" methods, the first group including the iodine, electrolytic, mercuric chloride, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and chlorine methods; the second group including the vacuum-fusion and hydrogen-reduction methods. The wet methods depend upon preferential solubility in a selected medium to separate the metallic portion of the sample from the oxygen-containing constituents. Subsequent analysis of the insoluble residue permits the isolation and separate determination of individual oxides and compounds. The hot methods depend upon the reduction of the oxide constituents of the sample by means of carbon or hydrogen at elevated temperatures. With the exception of the recently developed fractional vacuum-fusion method, the hot methods do not identify individual oxides and compounds but yield only a single value representing the sum of the oxygen contents of several or all of the oxide constituents present. With such diversity in the principles and aims of the different groups, it is not surprising that concordance of results by different methods has usually been difficult to obtain. The present cooperative attempt to define more rigorously than has been possible heretofore the accuracy and limits of usefulness of the various methods, originated in correspondence between Dr. John Johnston, Director of Research of the United States Steel Corporation, and other interested metallurgists. The plan was, briefly, to submit identical samples to a number of laboratories for analysis by different methods and to collate the results of these analyses. The project was endorsed by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at the annual meeting in February, 1933, and has been conducted under the joint sponsorship of the Iron and Steel Division and the National Bureau of Standards. AS the end of the collegiate year approaches, the problem of student employment again becomes acute. This subject divides itself into two phases: (1) employment prior to graduation and (2) employment following graduation. "Experience is the best teacher," according to the old adage, and the student needs all that he can get. He is afforded every opportunity to reap from his books the theories and principles of scientific and engineering practice, and occasionally he is privileged to make field trips to observe the practical side of the subject. But it is not enough for one to know the theory and to observe its application; it is also desirable for the student to get the feel of the tools during his training Such opportunities can only be afforded the student if the major companies cooperate with the universities in giving the student part-time and vacation work.

G EOPHYSICAL prospecting was presented in its several aspects and discussed with much vigor at two sessions during this year's annual meeting of the Institute. The first session was devoted entirely to the presentation and discussion of various technical papers, while the second meeting took the form of a round table conference on the advisability of revising the existing mining laws to recognize the results of geophysical prospecting. This conference was immediately followed by further consideration of technical papers. Each session was well attended and great interest was displayed by everyone present.

Of all the mineral substances utilized by man, salt or sodium chloride has one of the longest and most varied histories. Because all animal life is descended from marine organisms, sodium and chlorine became necessary to life, and as sodium chloride meets requirements most readily, common salt has been essential to human and animal diets from earliest times. As civilization progressed, man learned to evaporate sea water and brines of saline lakes and springs to obtain salt, and gradually ceased to depend on the flesh of animals and the occasional salt outcrops or "salt licks" they frequented. He also learned that salt had a multitude of uses, particularly as a preservative of meat and other foods. The importance of salt in the minds of early men may be readily seen from many allusions in the Bible and other ancient writings. Expressions such as "not worth his salt," and "the salt of the earth" are deeply embedded in the English language. Salt has symbolized friendship, fidelity, purity, and hospitality. It has been used as currency; had religious significance; caused wars; and has been a favorite commodity for taxation. The English word "salary" stems from the Latin word for salt, in which Roman soldiers received part of their pay. Although salt today retains its dietary importance, it has thousands of other uses. Of each 100 pounds produced in the United States less than three pounds is for table use. The other 97 pounds goes for agricultural, industrial, and chemical uses. Fortunately, reserves of salt are enormous and reasonably well distributed on the face of the earth. The sea is an inexhaustible source of salt which may be had at prices which vary with climate and other factors. In addition, large underground salt deposits and many salt lakes, springs and playas are scattered throughout the world. Most countries have access to a salt supply, although some are more favored than others. Properties Crystallized sodium chloride or common salt is known as halite. Its molecular weight is 58.454 and it contains, by weight, 39.34 pct sodium and 60.66 pct chlorine. Alternate positions in the cubic lattice are occupied, respectively, by negative chloride and positive sodium ions; the crystal form is isometric. Crystallization from water produces concentric shells, and when broken, a crystal shows conchoidal fracture. Salt has a hardness of 2.5; its specific gravity ranges from 2.1 to 2.6 for rock salt and is 2.165 for the pure crystal. The refractive index is 1.554; it melts at 800.8 ± 0.5°C and boils at 1413°C. Its heat of fusion is 123.59 cal/ gram. Salt is transparent or translucent and highly diathermous. It is colorless when pure and has a vitreous luster. Salt containing traces of iron oxides has varying shades of yellow, orange, brown, pink, or red. The peculiar shade of red sometimes found in that produced by solar evaporation of sea water has been attributed to tiny organisms. Blue mottlings sometimes seen in halite crystals have been attributed to colloidal sodium. Salt is soluble in water to the extent of 35.7 parts per 100 parts of water at 0°C and 39.8 parts per 100 of water at 100°C. The small difference in solubility with increasing temperature is important in the economics of producing salt by evaporating brine. Salt has a negative heat of solution which is 1.281 kg-cal/ mole at 18°C in 200 moles of water.

THE conventional method of making water gas involves individual plants for the separate carbonization of coal to coke and the subsequent gasification of coke with steam. The process demands lump coke, preferably made from the best quality of coking coals. The ash in the coke should have a high melting point and the gasification process suffers a loss of efficiency when cokes with low ash-melting points are used. In Britain, these coals are generally the most expensive and they are readily available only in certain localities. The coals not suitable for making lump coke, or yielding only poor quality coke, are much more widely available and are generally cheaper. DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES In Germany, processes have been developed and operated commercially for the production of water gas from very low-rank coals such as brown coal and lignites, but much less effort has been spent on processes to use coals of intermediate rank, which are widely available in Britain. The brown-coal processes use coal in the form of either dust or briquettes. The most successful of the dust-gasification methods is the Winkler process, which made a substantial contribution to German oil production during the war. It uses coal in the size range 0 to 8 mm and the fuel bed is blown with a mixture of oxygen and steam at a rate high enough to give it a characteristic boiling motion or, in present-day phraseology, at a rate more than sufficient to fluidize it (Fig. 1). Air cannot be used to provide the heat required for gasification, for vari¬ous reasons. In the first place, to make the process continuous by mixing air and steam would involve the production of a lean gas containing much nitrogen. If a separate blow were used, a large amount of potential heat would be lost because the blow gas in such a process would contain a very high percentage of carbon monoxide. Oxygen is necessary therefore and oxygen remains relatively expensive for use in gasification. In the Winkler generator, formation of clinker caused by local overheating does not occur, because of the mobility and high heat transfer of a fluidized bed. These properties of fluidized dusts have been used most successfully.

DURING the summer of 1916, while on a visit to the United States Agricultural Experiment Station at Mayaguez, Porto Rico, the writers were told by D. W. May, the director, that an occurrence of manganese ore had been reported from the mesa southeast of Mayaguez. A visit to the locality showed that the mesa is covered by a mantle of bright red soil resting upon serpentine. On account of the similarity of this occurrence to the extensive iron deposits of northeastern Cuba, it was thought that a brief description based upon a two days' reconnaissance survey of the area would be of scientific interest. Experimental analysis of diffusion samples covering the entire Cu-Ag-Au system at 725°C has been carried out. Experimental coefficients are computed at twenty-eight points in the lermary system. It is found that the direct coefficienl for copper is nearly independent of the silver, content for 1ow-silver alloys and that the cross coefficient for silver correlates with the ther-nzodynatnic properlies. This lalter observalion leads to the conclusion that the mobililies of copper and gold are nearly equal. Thermodynarmic actiuilies for Cu-Ag-Au were computed from binary data and adjusted to be consistent with neasured tie lines across the two-phase region which extends into the ternary diagram at 725°C. Application of these therknodynarnic calculaliorls to the dijftcsion data terifies the Onsager reciprocal relations to the extent that experimental uncertainlies will allow. It is jound that diffusion neav the critical point of the 1200-phase field in the isothermal section at 725°C causes the composition gradients for copper and silver to approach infinity while the direct and cross coeficients become equal. From the standpoint of experimental Procedures, it has been shown that microanalysis of ternary samples may be carried out using a simple expression for the conversion of X-ray zntensily to composilion. The accuracy of' this method has been demonstrated by the analysis of standard alloys and by the reproducibility of composition determinations using differed X-ray lines. DIFFUSION in a ternary alloy system is basically and significantly different from diffusion in binary alloys. When only two elements are present there is just one independent composition variable, and the diffusion profile of composition vs distance across a sample must change monotonically through all solid solutions bracketed by the terminal alloys. If two-phase regions are stable for compositions between the terminal values, these must appear as planar interfaces in the diffused sample, with the composition profile exhibiting sharp discontinuities. Adding a third element may alter this picture completely. Because of the additional degree of freedom in the composition, we may see composition profiles which do not change monotonically through solid-solution ranges, and stable, nonplanar phase interfaces. Even though two-phase regions may lie between the terminal compositions of a diffusion sample on the constitution diagram, they will not necessarily appear in the diffusion profiles. In binary diffusion only one coefficient is needed to describe the interdiffusion process. From Fick's law this coefficient relates the diffusive flux of one component to its own composition gradient. In ternary diffusion we must allow for cross interaction between the two independent species. By a linear extension of Fick's law we introduce "cross" or "off-diagonal" diffusion coefficients which relate the flux of one component to the composition gradient of the other independent constituent. Thus, we require four interdiffusion coefficients to describe the transport process in a ternary system. In its most general form,1,2 the rate equation for mass transport by isothermal diffusion in a system of s components states that the diffusive flux of component i, Ji, is a linear summation of all driving forces, Xk, each force being multiplied by an appropriate compliance coefficient:

DAVID WHITE,* Washington, D. C.-This paper is very timely since the Philippine Islands are presumably open to the enterprise of the American driller, whereas much of the territory in that part of the world is closed to us. The United States has ambitious plans for the operation of a great merchant marine, which is to be oil burning in the main, and it takes but a glance at the world map to see the strategic advantage of oil supplies in the Philippines for such marine operations. It is a little difficult to understand why more attention has not been given to the Philippines, in spite of the difficulties attending development in these islands. A number of American oil companies are, I believe, at the present moment taking an interest in the possibilities of the Philippines. Important factors in the formulation of opinion regarding the importance of the oil deposits of the Philippines, as brought out by Mr. Pratt,1 are the point of view and the breadth of experience of the examining geologist. The average oil geologist, whose experience has been mainly in the Appalachian region, the Mid-continent, or Louisiana, or possibly even in California, on seeing the narrowness of the basins, the closeness of the folding, and the presence of igneous rocks here and there, would be likely to draw unfavorable conclusions as to the possibilities of the Philippine Islands. Geologists visiting that region should be familiar with the geological conditions of oil occurrence in Japan, Formosa, the East Indies, or in the Baku district, and their conclusions should be formulated with the knowledge and understanding of the occurrence of oil in those regions rather than in the United States.

A 1,500-ft experimental well was used to study the pressure gradients occurring during continuous, vertical, two-phase flow through 1-in., 1 1/4-in. and 1 1/3-in. nominal size tubing. The test well was equipped with two gas-lijt valves and four Mathak electronic pressure transmitters as well as with instruments to measure the liquid production rate, air injection rate, temperatures and surface pressures. Tests were conducted for widely varying liquid flow, rates, gas-liquid ratios and liquid viscosities. From these data, an accucrate pressure-depth traverse was construcred for each test in each of the three tubing sizes. From the results of these tests, correlations have beer] developed which allow the accurate prediction of flowing pressure gradients for a wide variety of tubing sizes, flow conditions, and liquid properties. Also. the correlations and equations which are developed satisfy the necessary condition that they reduce to the relationships approprate to single-phase flow when the flow rate of either the gas or the liqutid phase becomes zero. All the correlations involve only dimensionless groups. which is a condition usually Sought for in similarity analysis but not always achieved. The correlations developed in this study have been used to calculate pressure gradients for pipes of larger diameter than those upon which the correlations are based. Comparisons of these calcuclaed gradients with experimetally determined gradients for the same flow conditions obtained from the literature indicate that extrapolation to these larger pipe sizes is possible with a degree of accuracy sufficient for engineering calculations. The extent of this extrapolation can only he determined with additional data from larger pipe diameters. INTRODUCTION The accurate prediction of the pressure drop expected to occur during the multiphase flow of fluids in the flow string of a well is a wideiy recognized problem in the petroleum industry. The problem has been brought even more into prominence with the advent of tubingless or slim-hole completions which use small-diameter tubing. Many of the correlations which give reasonably accurale results in the lager tubing sizes are greatly in error when applied to small-diameter conduits. Small-diameter conduits are defined as 1 1/2-in. nominal size tubing or smaller. The study of the pressure gradients which occur during multiphase flow of fluids in pipes is exceedingly complex because of the large number of variables involved. Further difficulties relate to the possibility of numerous flow regimes of widely varying geometry and mechanism and the instabilities of the fluid interfaces involved. Consequently, a solution to the problem by the approach normally used in classical fluid dynamics based on the formulation and solution of the Navier-Stokes equation has not been forthcoming. This is primarily the result of the nonlincarities involved and the difficulty of adequately describing the boundary conditions. As a result of the foregoing, most investigators have chosen semi-empirical or purely empirical approaches in an efford to obtain a practical solution to the problem. Much of the previous work in this area was done in short-tube models in the laboratory. A number of problems arise, however, when attempts are made to extrapolate these laboratory results to oilfield conditions where a much longer tube is encountered. In those few studies where data taken in long tubes were utilized, the data covered only a limited range of the variables, and as a result inaccuracies are introduced when the correlations are extended outside the range of the original data. Also, as a consequence of the limited amount of data available for these studies, the effects of several important variables were overlooked. The problem of predicting the pressure drop which occurs in multiphase flow differs from that of single-phase flow in that another source of pressure loss is introduced, namely, those pressure losses arising from slippage between the phases. This slippage is a result of the difference between the integrated average linear velocities of the two phases, which in turn is due to the physical properties of the fluids involved. In contrast to single-phase flow. the pressure losses in multiphase flow do not always increase with a decrease in the size of the conduit or an increase in production rate. This is attributed to the presence of the gas phase which tends to slip by the liquid phase without actually contributing to its lift. Many investigators have attempted to correlate both the slippage losses and the friction losses by means of a single energy-loss factor analogous to the one used in the single-phase flow problem. High temperature steady-state creep rates have been determined jor lead sulfide single crystals whose defect concentrations were fixed by equilibration under controlled sulfur pressure. The activation energy of creep, Qc , for undoped lead sulfide, is a function 01 composilion, decreasing from 2.9 to 2.2 ev as the carrier concentration increases from 9 x 1016 to 8 1018 electrons cm-3 for lead excess crystals, and increasing from 1.7 to 2.3 ev as the concentration of holes increases from 4 x 1017 to 1 x 1018 cm-3 in sulfur excess material. For five different composilions, Qc for undoped and bismuth-doped crystals has been found to be equal to Qpb + Qs, the self-diffusion activation energies for lead and sulfur in PbS. It is well-established1 that high-temperature steady-state creep of pure metals is a diffusion-controlled process, where the activation energy of creep is equal, within experimental error, to the activation energy of self-diffusion. The relationship between the activation energy for steady-state creep and those for self-diffusion in binary compounds is more complicated, however, because two different diffusing species must be considered, and becayse the activation energies may be influenced by compositional variations and by foreign atom additions.2-4 In some cases experimentally determined creep activation energies are correlated with those for self-diffusion of the slower-moving species, but such agreement is by no means universal. Interpretation of experimental results is difficult because few investigations include measurements of creep rates and self-diffusion coefficients of both diffusing species on single crystals of similar composition and foreign atom concentration. The objective of this investigation, therefore, is to determine the influence of stoichiometric defects and foreign atoms on steady-state creep and self-diffusion for a well-characterized binary compound. Lead sulfide, a compound semiconductor which crystallizes in the NaC1-type structure, and whose homogeneity range includes compositions on either side of the 1:l atom ratio, was chosen for study in this investigation. The pressure-temperature-composition relations for PbS are available,5,3 and deviations from stoichiometry may be monitored by electrical measurements.7 Single-crystal specimens are available to allow observation of effects due to bulk phenomena without interference from grain-boundary effects. These crystals have been employed to determine steady-state creep rates under compressive stress for "pure" and bismuth-doped PbS as a function of sulfur pressure and temperature as well as crystal orientation and applied stress in order to establish the relationships between defect concentrations and creep rates. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Crystal Growth. Lead sulfide crystals, prepared by the Bridgman method, are grown in evacuated quartz crucibles, filled with almost equal atomic proportions of high-purity (99.999 pct) lead and sulfur, and heated to a temperature above the melting point of PbS (about 1127°C) so that the lead and sulfur react to form molten PbS. The crucible and melt are dropped through the hot zone of the crystal-growing furnace at the rate of 1 cm per hr. The maximum melting point of PbS is slightly on the lead-rich side of the 50:50 composition; hence crystals grown from a near stoichiometric melt are usually n-type semiconductors containing excess lead atoms. Typically the lead excess concentration in solid solution with the PbS is 3 x 1018 atoms cm-3. Crystals containing either 1/20 or 1/2 mole pct Bi2S3 were prepared by addition of the foreign atoms prior to crystal synthesis. Preparation of Specimens of Controlled Stoichiom-etry. Since it is difficult to grow crystals of desired composition, the process of crystal growth and control of stoichiometry are separated into two distinct operations. Equilibration of as-grown PbS to a desired composition is most easily accomplished by first annealing the n-type crystals under high sulfur pressure (about 1 atm) at temperatures above 700°C. This process serves to put excess lead precipitates into solution, yielding 0 -type crystals upon quenching to room temperature. Inter diffusion occurs readily in crystals so treated, and the methods described by Bloem may then be employed to obtain crystals of controlled stoi-chiometry. For the creep measurements made in this study, this involves heating crystals in mixtures of H2 and H2S The equilibrium constant for H2S is given by: Thus the sulfur partial pressure is obtained from knowledge of the H2/H2S ratio and Kh2S for the temperature in question. Fig. 1 shows the p-T-x diagram for PbS. It can be seen that, within the stability limits for single-phase lead sulfide, desired compositions may be obtained by equilibrating under a specified sulfur pressure and temperature. Characterization of Crystals. The principal methods for evaluating PbS crystals include measurement of electrical properties and mass-spectrographic analysis. The measured electrical parameters include Hall coefficient, conductivity type, and electrical resistivity Bloem7 has shown that there is a 1:l relation between the defect concentration and carrier concentration obtained. The principal object of an underground coal mine transportation system is to move coal from the face where it is produced to the outside of the mine where it is prepared for market. In addition to the movement of coal, a transportation system must also move supply materials to the inside ; it must move men in and out of the mine ; and it must move rock and other debris out of the mine for disposal. Usually, mine haulage is divided into three categories named for the various areas of the mine served : 1) Pace Haulage. This is used at face from the mining machine to the intermediate transport system. 2) Intermediate or Secondary Haulage. Generally this is used between face haulage and main haulage. Sometimes this is merely an extension of the main haulage. 3) Main Haulage. This extends from the secondary haulage to the outside and is usually either a track or conveyor system, sometimes a combination of both. Transportation modes of coal in the various areas pose different problems, but the whole system must be synchronized. For instance, at the face the coal should be removed quickly from the various places to facilitate the movement of machines, whereas the intermediate system just passes the same coal on to the main transportation system. Selection of the transportation system must be based on the seam height, mining methods used to extract the coal, capacity required, ease of coal handling, and haulage efficiency. When driving rooms, mine cars can be used. They often simplify supply haulage and rock handling because they can also handle these items. Conveyors could be used and would have a greater haulage capacity but they cannot handle supplies easily or segregate the rock. When using a different mining method, such as longwall, mine cars cannot be used because there is not sufficient space to move the cars at the face nor can the cars haul the coal without delays which would cause excessive losses in production. I. INTRODUCTION We are aware that as a general rule zinc and lead deposits located by the Mediterranean Sea contain important proportions of oxidized ores of lead and zinc (cerussite, anglesite, smithsonite, hemimorphite). Although their economical significance is decreasing in favor of totally sulphurous ores*, la Societe Miniere et Metallurgique de Penarroya and its subsidiaries are still operating four small oxidized ore-bodies in Morocco, Spain, France, and Italy (see Figure 1). Not all of these deposits contain exclusively oxidized lead and zinc ores but also sulphides such as galena, sphalerite, and pyrite. However, the very presence of the oxidized ores gives the treatment methods their characteristics and it is bearing this in mind that we think the description of these four mills worthwhile. Flotation remains the basic process. It uses sulphurization in alkaline medium and long chain xanthate in order to concentrate lead minerals (amylxanthate) and fatty amines (sterarylamine acetate) to concentrate zinc minerals.

EVERY forward step in civilization brings with it an increase in population and increasing demand for raw materials. Modern civilization, because of its industrial development, depends more and more for its well-being on ample supplies of raw materials; the higher the type of that civilization, the greater its dependence. No fact is more obvious than that the raw materials should be put to use with greatest prudence and efficiency. National life is not a matter of a decade or a century. Conservation is no longer a matter for political discussion; it is a vital element in the future welfare of all nations. Unfortunately, to the minds of many, conservation means the locking up of natural resources, their arbitrary withdrawal, bringing about, in short, a condition of industrial stagnation. This has occurred in past centuries through misdirected governmental effort. Two eminent engineers have variously defined conservation as follows:

The following notes represent significant excerpts from a mass of records of experimental work done in the ore-dressing laborattory at the Columbia School of Mines during the years 1926 to 1928 inclusive. Classification of Experimental Work The experiments performed may be grouped for purposes of description under the following general headings: I. Collecting agents. a. A method for quantifying collecting effect. b. Coating with undissolved collecting agents (oils). c. Action of dissolved collecting agents. II. Frothing agent's. a. Effect on slime dispersion. c. Effect on sulfides. Summary of the Origins of Present-day Flotation Practice The first practicable, foolproof method of froth flotation was described in U. S. Patent 835120, issued in 1906 to Sulman, Picard and Ballot, and in the equivalent patents in other countries. A number of less simple methods of producing the same result had been described previously in patent publications and otherwise.' The reagents specified in all of these early patents were "oils" and, in addition, some inorganic substance, usually an acid. The quantities of reagents recommended and added were enormous when compared with those used today.

SOME readjustments in the research programs of most of the oil companics and petroleum engineering schools have been made necessary by the war. The most obvious change has been the conversion from production engineering to problems more closely related to the nation's was effort. Many laboratories now devote much of their time to studies on products to be derived from petroleum. such as synthetic rubber, toluene, and substitutes for critical materials. Others are working to improve motor fuels including high-octane gasoline and the special lubricants required by the wide geographical range of the present conflict. Of great importance is the experience of the geophysicists, who are now devoting a great percentage of their time on instrument research and production or special apparatus required by the armed forces.

CALIFORNIA'S iron and steel industry had its beginning in San Francisco in 1849 when the first iron casting was poured at the old Union Iron Works. Soon after, in 1856 at Grass Valley, enough iron ore was smelted to supply pig iron for the castings of a quartz mill there. From 1880 to 1886, iron ore was produced from the Hotaling mine in Placer County and converted to pig iron in a local blast furnace using charcoal. From 1907 to 1914, the Noble Electric Steel Co. produced pig iron from iron ore mined at the Shasta Iron Co. mine, and followed this for three years in the production of ferro-alloys. Between 1917 and 1941, the State's industry in- creased its capacity for open hearth and electric furnace scrap treatment, but the real impetus was supplied by the need for more steel at the beginning of World War II. The result was the State's first integrated steel plant-the Kaiser Steel Corp. facilities at Fontana.

The absence of a convenient glossary- of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copy, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who have favored me with assistance and advice. New Mexico produced 39,751,868 bbl. of oil in 1941 and ranked seventh among the oil-producing states. Its 1941 production established an annual record, exceeding the 1940 record year by 854,498 bbl. The average daily production for the year was 108,909 bbl. The average daily non-marginal well allowable for New Mexico on Jan. I, 1941, was 36 bbl.; at the close of the year it was 43 bbl. The average daily pipe-linc runs were approximately 3 per cent less than the allocations of the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission, which followed closely the recommendation of the United States Bureau of Mines in setting the daily outlet demand. The production in Lea County was 34,333,448 bbl.; Eddy County, 5,009,354 bbl.; and northwestern New Mexico (San Juan and McKinley Counties), 406,306 barrels. The total number of completions in the state was 402, of which 301 were oil wells, 19 gas wells, and 82 dry holes. Drilling during 1941 was 68 per cent of 1940, and the ratio of dry holes to producers, I to 4, was the greatest since 1935. Of these dry holes 43 were drilled in proven fields and 39 were wildcats. One new oil field and one new gas field were discovered as a result of the 1941 wildcatting program. However, numerous extensions were made to the existing fields, which, although they were called extensions to proration areas, were in reality field discoveries, being on separate geologic structures. Southeastern New Mexico Lea County The Monument field was the largest producing field in Lea County, with 6,973,808 bbl. It was closely followed by the Eunice field, with 6,644,181 bbl.; Vacuum field, with 4,800,608 bbl. and Hobbs, with 3,624,159 bbl. Hobbs field, however, still has the largest total recovery, this being 97,407,929 bbl. at the end of 1941. The new oil-field discovery in Lea County during 1941 was the Salt Lake field, T. 20 S., R. 33 E. The discovery well was Leonard-Welch State No. I, NW. NW. of sec. 18, T. 20 S., R. 33 E. This well was drilled to a total depth of 3103 ft. and was completed for an initial production of 250 bbl. per day pumping. The oil is 26" gravity and the producing horizon is in the San Andres limestone of Permian age. The discovery well was completed on June 22, 1941, and since that date four more producers have been completed, with no failures. The area is about 10 miles north-west of the Lynch pool, to which the oil from this field is being trucked because there is no pipe-line connection. The greatest drilling activity during 1947 was in the Maljamar field of western Lea County, with 62 completions, 59 being oil wells and 3 dry holes. The limits of this pool are now being defined on the north and south but to date have not been defined either to the east or west. The total number of 40-acre oil-producing units in the field at the close of the year was 158. On April I, 1941, a pressure-maintenance project was installed at the southern end

The production of petroleum in New York state in 1942 amounted to 5,410,000 bbl. This represents an increase over each of the four preceding years, and, with the exception of 1937, is the largest production since the peak of over six million barrels in 1882, shortly after the discovery of oil in Allegany County. The oil industry in New York is virtually stabilized and there has been little or no exploration for new sources of supply in recent years. The boundaries of the present fields were established more than 30 years ago and since then no additional reserves have been found. Deep drilling for natural gas during the past 10 years both within and without the oil fields has failed to find oil in quantity below the present producing sands of Devonian age. Oil Since 1882, the New York fields have produced approximately 140 million barrels of oil. Of this amount, 65 million was produced up to the year 1919 by ordinary pumping methods; that is, without flooding by water or the use of other secondary-recovery methods. In the year 1919, when a law was passed making the use of water-flooding methods legal, the oil production, of the state amounted to only 851,000 bbl. In the 23 years since 1919, there have been produced in the state 75 million barrels, or 10 million more than in the previous 37 years, which included the period of flush production. Price.—On March 26, the price of crude oil was raised from $2.75 to $3.00 per barrel, hut this increase had little or no effect on the number of wells drilled. In the Allegany field, which accounts for three fourths of the state's oil production, 1259 wells were completed in 1942, 7 less than in 1941. The smaller number of wells drilled was not only due to the shortage of labor but also was caused by the fact that in water-flooding territory a definite program for drilling wells is followed, and the flush period of an oil well is not usually reached in time to profit by any given price increase. Daily Production.—All of the oil wells in New York state, some 21,000 in number, are small producers. The average daily oil production is 7/10 bbl. per well. Under good flooding conditions, a maximum production of 5 to 8 bbl, a day is reached about one year after the flood begins to act on the well. In 5 years the daily production usually is less than one barrel. Although most of the oil in New York is produced by flooding, an estimated 2500 old wells produce without flooding. Some of these produce as little as 1/20 bbl. a day and are pumped only at intervals. The small producing Wells are mostly on lands leased to the larger oil companies and later will be included in a flooding program. At present, they are pumped only because the owners of the land insist on the royalty. Government Aid Needed.—Because of its good lubricating qualities, New York oil is one of those for which there is an insistent and growing demand, but even at its present price of $3.00 per barrel, many of the operators are producing at a loss.

This paper records over twenty years' experience with the use of the Rheolaveur system in the United States, showing its ability to meet changing conditions caused by the dirtier mine output of present-day mechanical mining methods. Data are given on size ranges handled, number and capacity of units installed, maintenance experience, and operating results on two-product and three-product separations. IT is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the principles employed in the Rheolaveur system of fine-coal cleaning as these have been fully covered in the technical literature of the Institute."2 Rather, our purpose will be to record the highlights of over 20 years' experience in the United States with Rheolaveur fine-coal launders, which will indicate their capabilities and costs of cleaning and their adaptability to meet the changing conditions caused by present-day mechanical mining methods. Rheolaveur fine-coal launders are used in the United States to treat a wide variety of size ranges of fine coal, the coarsest being 1/2 in. to 0 and the finest about 1/8 in. to 0. In Europe feeds as coarse as 5/8 in. and as small as 1/2 mm (28-mesh) to 0 are being cleaned. The size ranges usually handled in this country are 3/8 to 1/4-in. round to 0. Thirty five units with a combined hourly feed capacity of 3200 tph have been installed in the United States. Individual units are cleaning as little as 25 tph, while others are cleaning as much as 200 tph. Rheolaveur fine-coal launders offer cleaning units of high capacity and are outstanding in requiring a minimum of building space per ton of input. Experience has shown that maintenance costs are low. Several installations were made in the Pittsburgh district from 1928 to 1930, and since that time operation has been largely two shifts per day. Minor repairs to liner plates and Rheo boxes have been required during the intervening years, but no major replacement of launders was required until 1947 and 1948. At one of these plants, launders operated for 17 years before they were replaced and during that period over 26,000,000 tons of —5/16-in. coal were cleaned. The effect of the much dirtier raw coal produced by mechanical loading of the Pittsburgh seam is shown by the following tests. The data in table I summarize the performance of a Rheo fine-coal unit when cleaning hand-loaded raw coal. The —4-in. raw coal fed to the cleaning plant analyzed only 8.16 pct ash and 1.31 pct sulphur and contained 4.6 pct sink, 1.55 sp gr. Two years later, in 1945, mechanically-loaded coal from the same mine was cleaned in the same plant. The feed, —4 in., then analyzed 20.10 pct ash and 1.53 pct sulphur and contained 20.2 pct sink, 1.55 sp gr. The performance of the Rheo fine-coal unit when cleaning this coal is given in table 11. It will be noted that the +48-mesh coal is cleaned almost as thoroughly as in table I. The large amount of high-ash slimes produced from the dirtier feed are responsible for the higher ash of —--48-mesh washed coal in table 11. In this plant the Rheo fine-coal unit did not get the full load of refuse resulting from mechanical
