BEFORE entering into the statistical part of this article, some general comments may be ln order. Each important war seems to introduce a new atmosphere and a new epoch. The Civil War led to the period of great interior development in North America, of the transcontinental railroads, and of large-scale manufactures. The first World War introduced the general use of the automobile, the building of a huge network of highways, the radio, and household engineering. Now I expect World War II also to introduce some new ways of living. Transocean aviation will become a commonplace; we shall probably have much more of an eye to our military and naval establishments and be more conscious of Eastern Hemisphere affairs instead of thinking so exclusively of the Western. Each war has also multiplied government expenditures and taxes; and to this rule the present one will certainly be no exception.

The Parkes process lead refinery of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, was built by the International Smelting & Refining CO. to treat the lead bullion produced by its Tooele plant, at Tooele, Utah. The plant was designed and constructed under the direction of the writer. Ground was broken Apr. 16, 1912, and exactly six months later the plant was in operation and lead was being cast. The capacity of the plant, running 25 days per month, is 5,000 tons. The four products of the plant are common lead, corroding lead, antimonial lead, and Dore bullion. The site is an area, 64 acres in extent, lying north of 151st Street, between McCook Avenue and the Canal. The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal, and Pennsylvania Railroad enter the yard at the plant. There are five storage tracks and space for storing 100 cars in the yard. the main lead to the storage tracks passes over a 100-ton track scale on entering the yard.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz's paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting my results to the Institute in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mice-explosions are, more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more in¬clined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what would otherwise probably have been .small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during sunnier .and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas.coal -region, in McDowell couuty, W.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine shaft mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

The yield strength of annealed tungsten was found to have a strain rate exponent 12 times as great as that of low carbon steel. The effects of temperature and strain rate could be correlated through the Zener-Hollomon parameter with a heat of activation associated with yielding of 32,000 cal per g-atom. This heat of activation is independent of strain although both the temperature and strain rate dependence of the yield strength vary with strain. MOST metals have mechanical properties that are relatively insensitive to strain rate, especially at temperatures below that at which creep is important. In iron and molybdenum," however, relatively large strain rate effects are observed in the temperature range where the rapid increase in yield strength occurs which leads to the ductile to brittle transition. In this temperature range Zener and Hollomon' have suggested that the effects of strain rate and temperature T on the yield strength could be correlated through a single parameter, P, in the following manner where Q is a heat of activation characteristic of the metal and associated with some unspecified relaxation process. They also observed that if the temperature is restricted to a relatively narrow range— below room temperature for steel—that the logarithm of the yield strength could be expressed as a linear function of the logarithm of P. From this relation the logarithm of stress should be a linear function of the logarithm of the strain rate at constant temperature: where r will be referred to herein as the strain rate exponent. At a constant strain rate the logarithm of stress should be a linear function of l/T, ay(e = C) ~ eT [4] where q = Qr [5] and is referred to herein as the temperature exponent. These equations have been found to relate the effects of temperature and strain rate on the yield strength of molybdenum in the temperature range wherein the ductile to brittle transition occurs, —75° to +150°C.2 Bechtold and Shewmon3 have shown recently that the ductile to brittle transition in annealed tungsten occurs in the temperature range +150° to +350°C. Samson Jordan was born at Geneva, Switzerland, June 23, 1831. At the age of 20 years he entered the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, at Paris, from which he was graduated with high honors in 1854. After some months of service with the Compagnie du Chemin de Fer du Nord, he was employed (upon the recommendation of his former instructor, Prof. Burat, who had recognized his remarkable ability) at the mines of Portes, belonging to the Société de l'Elairage au Gaz et des Hauts Fourneaux, etc., of Marseilles, and subsequently to construct the St. Louis iron blast-furnaces of that Co. After finishing this work, he remained at Marseilles as a member of the directory of the Co., particularly connected with the development of its mines. In 1862 he became the general advisory engineer of the Co., and still later (1873) its general manager (Administratet~r), a position which he retained until his death, February 24, 1900. He became subsequently Administrateur of other important French industrial enterprises, including those of the Compagnie des Naut Fourneaux, Forges et Aciéries de Denain et Anzin, and the Compagnie Banco-Belge des Mines de Somorrostro ; and he was also, at various times, President of the Société technique du Gaz, Vice-President of the Comité des Forges de France, mepber of the Council of the Société d'Encouragement pour l'Industrie nationale. In all these positions, it is the unanimous testimony of his colleagues that he was no mere ornamental figurehead, but a profoundly wise, practical and industrious laborer and adviser, both patient and keen in the mastery of details, yet at the same time competent to apprehend the wider bear-

A MORE complete interpretation of the amorphous theory in metals is given than has heretofore been offered. It is believed that Le Chatelier, Tammann, and Heyn, at present the ablest opponents of the amorphous theory, will not he able longer to continue their beliefs that surface tension alone can account for all the observed variations in the properties of single constituent metals. It is strongly advocated that the properties of any solid substance be studied from the standpoint of the number of constituents present, the quantity and arrangement of each constituent, and the properties, of each constituent. Each deformable crystalline constituent by plastic deformation will produce amorphous material, thus changing the properties. Considerable attention is given to the variations in properties of the amorphous and crystalline phases of any substance. These are summarized as follows: 1. The cohesion of the amorphous phase of a substance is substantially zero at the melting point while the cohesion of the crystalline phase is considerable at the melting point. With decrease in temperature, the cohesion of the amorphous phase increases at a faster rate than that of the crystalline phase; this differential rate of change of cohesion holds between absolute zero and the melting point. In crowding the recent mass of work on the physics of cast-iron into the compass of a short review, I cannot do better than to follow the lines of Mr. W. R. Webster's suggestion, made at the Florida meeting of the Institute, March, 1895.' The classification of the properties of the metal, and the influences to which it is subjected during the various processes it undergoes, is quite complete; and as Mr. Webster gives it again in full in another paper at the present meeting, a simple reference to it now will be sufficient. I. Correspondence Between Chemical Composition, and Melting-Point, Fluidity, Shrinkage, Fracture,Chill, Micro-Structure, and Other Physical Properties. Melting-Point.—The melting-point of cast-iron had long been a subject of controversy among foundrymen. They knew that a hard iron melted faster than a soft one, but this effect was occasionally disputed, and the reasons given were unsatisfactory; but could not be well controverted. It was my good fortune to take the actual melting-temperatures of some 70 pig-irons and castings; the Le Chatelier pyrometer, suitably protected, being introduced into the interior, and the iron melted off in a specially-constructed cupola. Samples of iron containing nitrogen or carbon have been given treatments similar to those used in cold-work peak (CWP) measurements and examined by transmission electron microscopy. It was observed that the unusual and nonreproducible behavior of the carbon CWP can be explained by a strong tendency for carbon to form grain boundary precipitates at temperatures below those used for CWP measurements. These precipitates dissolved at the temperatures used in the CWP measurements. There was no evidence for nitrogen precipitation at grain boundaries. There was no indication of precipitation along dislocations in either carburized or nitrided samples given treatments similar to those of CWP measurements. Although it is possible that subelectron-microscopic clustering had occurred, this observation supports the theories of the CWP that are based on continuous atmospheres rather than on individual precipitates. In an earlier paper,' the present authors developed a new distribution function to predict the occupation of sites for interstitial impurity atoms around a dislocation. When this distribution was applied to the case of carbon and nitrogen in iron, it predicted that, if the temperature dependence of the concentration of solute atoms in the matrix was controlled by the presence of equilibrium carbide or nitride precipitates, the tendency for nitrogen to segregate to dislocations would be greater than that for carbon even though their binding energies to dislocations are identical. The cold-work internal-friction peak (CWP) is considered by most authors to be produced by the interaction of interstitial impurities with dislocations. Many investigators have studied the CWP in iron containing carbon and nitrogen and have observed a significant difference between its behavior in the two cases. In this paper a series of experiments will be reported that were initiated to determine whether the application of the new distribution function would explain the observed differences between the carbon and nitrogen CWP. Although it was found that the distribution function, pev se, did not explain the differences, the differences became clear, and some insight into the mechanism of the CWP was realized. Before reporting the present experiments, the literature pertaining to the differences between the carbon and nitrogen CWP in iron and the various mechanisms proposed for the CWP will be reviewed. LITERATURE REVIEW Snoek2 first observed the CWP in iron specimens containing nitrogen, but also reported a weak and unreliable peak in carburized samples. Later, Ke3 established that the CWP height was proportional to the degree of deformation. The presence of nitrogen alone would produce a peak of the same size as found in a sample containing both nitrogen and carbon, and KG concluded that the CWP was caused by nitrogen. In a discussion of G's paper it was reported that Dijkstra had investigated the CWP in samples that contained only carbon. He found it to be much smaller than the nitrogen peak and "unstable". KG et al.4 charged specimens of iron with both carbon and nitrogen. They observed that the carbon CWP was much smaller than that observed in nitrided samples, but that aging at 300°C caused the carbon peak to increase. A similar treatment produced no change in a nitrogen peak. Annealing at higher temperatures caused the height of the CWP in both the nitrogen and carbon samples to decrease. This behavior was also observed by Kamber et al. 5 who found that the activation energy for the annealing of the CWP was identical with the activation energy for the self-diffusion of iron. They concluded that the annihilation of dislocations by climb caused the reduction in the CWP height. Kamber et al. studied the "unstable" carbon peak in detail. They measured both the Snoek and CWP during various aging treatments. In carburized samples, aging at 100°C caused the Snoek peak to disappear, although the CWP peak remained small. However, a subsequent treatment for 5 hr at 240°C caused the CWP to reach a maximum. They proposed that an additional location for the carbon, other than whatever site produced the CWP, is present. In nitrided samples the CWP was completely developed as soon as a measurement was made; additional sites are not present. No explanation of either the additional site or the difference in the behavior of carbon and nitrogen was offered. petarra5 performed a systematic study of the effect of composition on the CWP. Using three kinds of "pure" iron, he showed that there was a residual CWP when the carbon and nitrogen concentrations had been reduced to less than that detectable by Snoek-peak measurements. He observed the same general annealing behavior and composition dependence as previous investigators, with the following exceptions. On first measuring the carbon CWP, it was found to be identical with the residual peak, and essentially independent of the carbon content. If the CWP was measured a second time in the same sample, it increased in size, but was still only about one-fourth the size of a CWP in a sample of the same iron nitrided to the same composition. Fire-brick hot-blast stoves have been the subject of frequent discussions at the meetings of the Institute; and although it is my object to elucidate some of the points in connection with this subject, I will not go into the specific features of all types, but more especially call attention to a new type recently designed by Mr. Fred. W. Gordon. As the economical production of a ton of pig-iron is a more essential feature than a large output, much depends, where fuel cannot be obtained cheaply, upon suitable apparatus whereby high temperatures can be maintained. Where iron-pipe stoves have been employed, the fuel-consumption reached one and a half pounds of fuel, and, when a larger output was desired, often two pounds, to the pound of iron produced. The temperature attained rarely exceeded 900' F., and that at the expense of frequent renewals of the pipes, which was not inconsiderable. The fire-brick hot-blast stoves of the past five or six years have clearly demonstrated their superiority over the old system. Of the accompanying drawings, Fig. 3 illustrates a four-pass regen-

Neutron-diffraction pattens were obtained at room temperature from two austenitic manganese steels, oxc wth n carbon content of 1.23 zct PC/ and the olher 0.63 wt pct. Analysis of the data showed that the curOan atols (ions) occupy tile octaheadral site. any of the cavbon is in the tetahedral site, tile concentration is too strzall lo be detecled by tzeulr-on d$facton. AS part of a long-range investigation of eutectoid decomposition, a study of the structure of austenite has been undertaken in order to characterize as best as possible the parent phase in the Fe-C system. Austenite is a solid solution of carbon atoms in fcc iron, the carbon atoms being located in interstitial positions. Of the two kinds of interstitial sites, octahedral (0, +, +) and tetrahedral (4, a, $), in this lattice, the larger octahedral sites are usually considered as the probable position of carbon. The strain energy involved in pytting a neutral carbon atom (covalent di; ameter 1.54)' into a tetrahedral site (diameter 0.56A) is considerably greater than that associated with p2tting carbon into the octahedral site (diameter 1.08A). Dayal and arkeen' observed the migration of carbon in iron under the influence of an electric field indicating tha tye carbon is ionized. pe ionic radius of C'4 is 0.15A and that of C" is 0.29. Consequently, it is conceivable that carbon ions could occupy the tetrahedral sites if one considers only the strain energy. Size considerations alone do not provide a complete explanation for the formation of the interstitial solid solutions, however. because metals such as copper, zinc, and cadmium do not appear to form interstitial solid solutions in spite of their large interstitial sites. Evidence which suggests partial ioni-zation of the carbon in austenite has also been obtained by Speiser, Spretnak, and alor who derived formu- lae relating the observed change in lattice parameter to the effective diameter of the solute atom. Assuming the carbon occupies the octahedral site. they computed the effective diameter of carbon to be 1.33A whereas the covalent diameter is 1.54A. petch5 concluded from powder X-ray diffraction experiments that carbon atoms occupy the octahedral sites. His conclusion was based on the general trend observed in the intensity of the diffraction lines as the carbon content of the austenite was increased. However, the major difficulty associated with application of X-ray diffraction to this particular problem is the relatively poor scattering power of carbon. Williamson and smallman' utilized X-ray diffraction to study the line broadening caused by the strain field about carbon atoms inferrite: these investigators concluded that at least 85 pct of the carbon in ferrite occupies the octahedral (0: 3, B) site rather than the larger

The success of a collector vehicle, designed to recover manganese nodules under the conditions which exist in deep ocean mine sites will in part be determined by the effectiveness of pick-up and running gear mechanisms. For the purpose of qualitative comparison, some specific aspects of seafloor interactions with various concepts are reviewed utilizing existing data on seafloor characteristics and running gear/tool interaction with soils.
