At last year's. annual meeting of The Institute, Sir George Fisher, as President, compared it somewhat nostalgically with a meeting of its kind in the 1920s when comment was expressed on the decline of Australianmining and on the lack of new mineral discoveries.I feel that tonight's annual meeting is even more an occasion for nostalgia, for it represents the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. I hope, therefore, that I may be allowed to retrace some of the circumstances of this Institute's origin and at the same time to look at some of the broader happenings of those 75 years.From this distance in time it is, of course, much easier to get things in perspective and one of the things that compels enormous admiration in looking back over the history of our Institute is to note the qualities of foresight and keen concern for professional standards which moved the pioneers in this Institute. They had no benefit of hindsight to aid them.Just over 75 years ago, a small group of men met in Broken Hill to discus.s the possibilities of forming an association of mining engineers. The moving spirit was Uriah Dudley, our first secretary, manager of the Umberumberka mine at Silverton. The first formal move to form an association of mining engineers came from the Amalgamated Mining Managers Association of Australasia. At the time, this association was a fairly new group, being 5 years old.It had been formed to try to raise the standard of management throughout the industry. Uriah Dudley and our first provisional president, John Howell, held their first talks in 1891 and further meetings at Broken Hill followed. The inaugural meeting, attended by 200 members, was held in Adelaide in April, 1893.

"The Subtropolis room-and-pillar mine extracts the Vanport Limestone (Allegheny Formation, Pennsylvanian System) near Petersburg, Ohio. Strata instability problems associated with excessive concentrations of lateral stress caused the mine operator to implement a change in layout design. This mining method has been identified as a stress control layout, which has been used by other underground stone mines in the past with varying degrees of success. Practical experience has shown that entry headings advance in the direction of the principal lateral stress, producing lower stress concentrations with better mining conditions. It is important to minimize stress concentrations along the mining front, so an arrow-shaped advance is recommended. This technique advances more developments (headings) in a “good” direction and reduces developments (crosscuts) in a “bad” direction. As is expected, the stress control layout enhances the potential for shear failures in crosscuts. It is, therefore, important to focus crosscut engineering interventions that either: (a) lower stress concentrations (for example, an arched roof) or (b) enhance strength of the strata containing the shears (for example, rock reinforcement). This study focuses on observing strata conditions on a regular basis and monitoring the response of this strata to changing geologic and mining conditions through 3D Dynamic LiDAR scans.INTRODUCTIONProject AimsThe Subtropolis Mine is extracting the Vanport Limestone in northeastern Ohio. Since the start of mining in 2006, ground conditions have been significantly affected by excessive lateral stress condition. In some other mining districts with this hazard, certain mine layouts have been shown to lessen the potential for unstable ground conditions. The term “lessen” is used to state the realization that stress concentrations are not eliminated but instead occur in less frequency and intensity, and their locations can be projected.The stress-control mine layout, specifically for large-opening room-and-pillar stone mines, naturally evolved at mines suffering from excessive lateral stress problems. These mines will typically experiment with methods to mitigate adverse impacts, thus developing best practices for their conditions. These practices have evolved into a basic framework for the stress control mine layout. For example, Jack Parker was able to write about personal experiences at the White Pine Mine in Michigan (Parker, 1966, 1973). Various researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have studied the effectiveness of stress-control mine layouts over a wide range of geologic conditions (Emery, 1964; Mark and Mucho, 1994; Iannacchione et al., 2003). While the stress control layout design approach has proven successful in many categories, it can be difficult to implement. For example, excessive stress conditions in crosscuts can put the ground control focused intervention at odds with ventilation and haulage constraints, thus limiting optimal crosscut size, shape, and location. Therefore, more information on the effectiveness of this approach is needed."

There are several well-known, extensively researched and tested methods of suppressing a coalmine methane and coal dust explosion. The choice of method used is dependent on the legislative requirements of each country, which in turn are influenced by mining conditions in that jurisdiction. For example, seam gas content and the dustiness of the coal will combine to create the hazard, while the physical and chemical properties of the seam might influence the possibility of ignition sources such as frictional ignitions. The mining method and layout will also influence the choice of preventative or proactive suppression devices. The decision as to which method is approved and adopted should be based on currently tested and available technology and the latest research outcomes, and should be subjected to a rigorous risk assessment, since a methane explosion propagating into a coal dust explosion cannot be countenanced.Every new technology must undergo stringent tests and these tests must be certified by accredited research facilities or laboratories. Upon approval, an explosion suppression system or the critical components of such a system should be tested in a more realistic environment. This environment can ideally be found in an operating underground mining section for evaluation purposes. Based on the insight gathered in such an environment, a realistic evaluation of the effectiveness of a potential system can be carried out. The explosion suppression system described in this paper has been tested on numerous occasions at accredited test facilities. The technology described in this paper has been used in various applications in underground coalmines and has been adapted to fulfil and exceed the requirements set out for methods currently in use. This paper describes the underground evaluation results of the latest technology in active suppression systems as used on continuous miners was adopted to perform as a roadway explosion barrier.CITATION:Spaeth, A, Belle, B and Phillips, H, 2017. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Nam San copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2011 and is a likely blind extension of the Permian age Phu Kham structurally deformed porphyry/skarn copper-gold deposit.The Nam San mineralisation is hosted within a dominantly sericite altered schist unit located to the north of the current Phu Kham open pit operation and is overthrust by an allochthonous barren cover sequence of limestone, granite and sandstone. Reinterpretation of the Phu Kham geology developed the concept of a possible telescoped porphyry copper-gold system at depth. Initial drilling intersected remobilised copper mineralisation in a basal conglomerate, confirming the concept. A reconnaissance vector array induced polarisation (IP) survey identified a deep chargeability anomaly from which a drilling target was developed from 3D inversion modelling of a detailed follow up dipole-pole-dipole anomaly. Drilling of the chargeability anomaly intersected the blind Nam San copper-gold mineralisation beneath the thrusted cover sequence.The key discovery parameters are the result of an integrated exploration program that included reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy, which developed the concept of a deep blind orebody, IP surveys capable of penetrating through the barren cover and a commitment to a deep directional drilling program to test these concepts and targets. "Potassium is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production.Potash is extracted from buried ancient evaporites by underground or solution mining. This accounts for most of the potassium produced. Another important source is brine from landlocked water bodies, such as the Dead Sea, Salar de Atacama or Great Salt Lake.About 95% of potash produced worldwide is used in agriculture. The rest is found in several other industrial uses, including glass manufacturing, soaps, plastics and pharmaceuticals.Currently, three producers: IMC, PCS and Agrium operate 8 conventional and two solution mines in Saskatchewan, five of which run froth flotation circuits, two heavy media-flotation, two run forced crystallization and one natural crystallization.Potash in SaskatchewanPotash was discovered in Saskatchewan in the early 1940’s while drilling for oil. The deposits lie diagonally across the southern plains of Saskatchewan sloping southerly from a 1,000m depth at Saskatoon to more than 1,600 m depth at Belle Plaine and up to 3,000 m in depth in North Dakota. The known deposits are massive, accounting for more than 40% of the world’s known reserves."

The subject of bearing pile performance installed by vibratory hammers has been a matter of increasing study and continued controversy. A recent case study from a major bridge replacement project is discussed which provides encouraging data on the use of vibratory pile hammers as a primary means of pile installation and also presents the problems associated with its general acceptance. The bridge project case study foundations consisted of HP 14 x 89 pile sections, designed to develop capacity primarily in friction. Preliminary tip elevations were determined by traditional static analyses. Production pile installation was performed using an IHC S-70 Hydro-Hammer. Driving criteria and final production pile tip elevations were determined after preliminary indicator pile drive tests and static load test results at bridge pier cofferdam locations. Based on impact driven production pile performance, the Contractor wished to investigate vibratory driven piles as a means to accelerate construction schedule. Dynamic pile testing procedures were used as the primary measurement tool and test results were compared to the production pile drive records and prior static load tests. Field testing consisted of driving and monitoring with the PDA impact driven piles to the design tip elevation. Three vibratory driven piles were installed to the same tip elevation and immediately subjected to impact driving and dynamic testing to compare dynamic pile resistance. The results indicated that the site soil conditions were favorable for vibratory pile hammer installation. Recommendations and procedures for proceeding with vibratory hammer pile installation were presented to the Owner. These procedures included quality control in conformance with latest AASHTO recommendations. The Owner, in spite of the site specific data base and QA/QC procedures, would not accept vibratory pile hammer installation, due to the absence of precedence. It is concluded that for vibratory methods to become accepted a rational method of analysis, design and field QA/QC procedures requires development. In addition, the engineering community and Owners/Agencies must be more open to alternate methods of foundation construction. The continued development of dynamic methods of monitoring vibratory pile installation is considered to be key to the general acceptance of this installation procedure.

Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The project investigated regional impacts of mining on the ground water system of the Powder River Basin by: 1) establishment of a regional ground water monitoring network, and 2)development of , set of digital computer models to simulate ground water flow and quality, ground water contributions to surface water flow and quality (i.e., baseflow), and watershed run-off and recharge. Over 100 wells were monitored for physical and chemical parameters. Data were used as input to the model; and for the development of a comprehensive data base. The basin was modeled on a regional and subregional scale using a finite -difference model employing an alternating difference technique. Two water-shed models were evaluated for their ability to provide runoff and recharge inputs to the basic ground water model. Application of the regional and subregional models using conservative mining scenarios showed that drawdowns may extend west from the mines as far as ten miles but that impacts would be insignificant on a regional scale. The watershed model could be effectively applied to small watersheds only.

In 1984, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 13,730-acre Burnt Lodge (MT-065-278) Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The WSA is located in Phillips and Valley Counties, MT, about 55 miles south of Malta adjoining the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. It is underlain by near horizontal sedimentary beds of the Hell Creek Formation, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Bearpaw Shale. No mines or prospects were found in the WSA. Bentonitic beds were examined, but are generally less than 1 ft thick and, except where exposed, are deeply buried. Kaolin-bearing sandstone in the Colgate Member of the Foxhills Sandstone was sampled and may have potential for use in structural clay products. However, remoteness and inaccessibility of the area make it unlikely that the material could be economically extracted even though some of the material is marginally useful.

Cyest Corporation has been involved in economic modelling and optimisation with various mining clients within South Africa, and internationally, for the past 5 years. In the mining industry in particular, the relationships between variables that are controllable, and those that are not, and the physical and economic outcomes are complex and often non-linear. These relationships constitute an economic system. In the mining context, although many of the relationships can be accurately quantified on a ?single variable to single variable? basis, such simplistic relationships will not suffice in order to understand the dynamics of an entire mine. One has to specify and quantify the relationships between hundreds, if not thousands, of variables. Furthermore, in reality, these relationships change over time. This is the role of an economic model where all the relevant cause-effect relationships, within pertinent constraints, are accurately represented. Models that are used for optimisation must therefore capture the dynamics of the economic system in question as well as anticipate changes to the relationships between these variables. An accurate economic model is a prerequisite for successful optimisation. Optimisation entails the allocation or configuration of resources, within control of management, which will maximise (or minimise) a desired objective function. An optimal configuration (implying trade-off) of controllable variables therefore exists for a given set of assumptions that will yield a maximised objective function. Due to the multi-variant trade-offs required for optimisation, the concept of the ?Economic Surface? or ?Hill of Value? has been used to represent these optimisation outcomes and to discern the route to an optimal configuration. A good example of this is the volume versus cut-off grade trade-off that yields an optimal value for a particular shaft with its unique geological and economic assumptions. More recently, Cyest has extended these economic models to incorporate risk associated with variance in assumptions and inputs. This is termed DFA (dynamic financial analysis) and incorporates stochastic modelling and some of the latest actuarial techniques around modelling global assumptions (such as pricing and exchange rate). This paper will cover the theory around mine optimisation through some example case studies, and also explain the latest thinking regarding incorporating DFA.

THE area dealt with in this paper is included within a radius of about 3 miles of the Poimena township. Several thousand tons of tin have been won from this field, and probably £200,000 spent in exploiting it.PREVIOUS LITERATUREThe field has been reported on by Government geologists on four occasions and several ,articles on it have appeared in the mining journals. The work done by Government geologists is summarized below:-"Report on the Blue Tier Tin Mining District and its Tin Deposits", 1886.Speaking of the tin-ore occurrences, this paper states:-"In the primary granite the lodes of tin ore occur, also dykes and belts of more recently obtruded porphyries. The really valuable metalliferous deposits may be classified as follows :-1. Lodes (of which the Lottah mine is typical).2. Dykes- (a) Indurated or hard (as shown by the formations at the Anchor and Cream Creek mines). (b) Soft (eg Hayley's Lease).

Development of Barrick Gold?s Pierina Gold Mine in north-central Peru requires construction of a waste dump for disposal of non-ore grade materials stripped from the open pit to expose the ore. The waste dump site is located near the open pit in a U-shaped valley that is underlain by thin colluvial and morainal soils with locally thick peats and glaciolacustrine deposits. Bedrock underlying the site consists of variably weathered volcanics. The site is subject to moderately high seasonal rainfall and significant seismicity. The geotechnical quality of the waste rock is highly variable, ranging from low quality, degradable, soil-like materials containing appreciable quantities of silt and clay, to high quality, hard, durable, blocky waste rock. A hybrid dump design concept was developed that requires in-pit segregation of high and low quality waste, and selective placement of materials in the dump to maximize stability and enhance internal and subsurface drainage. The design includes a rock drain beneath the dump along the axis of the valley and a series of connected finger drains. Extensive peripheral diversions and stormwater control measures to inhibit infiltration of precipitation are also included. This paper discusses the unique challenges presented by the site and waste materials, the design methodology and stability analyses, and planned monitoring systems.

I had the opportunity recently to visit a magazine site of a major explosives company. It was fun to see the storage areas again and it was really interesting to see one of the old magazines that probably dated back before my time. Now that’s an old one. As son Tom says, “When Dad was young the Dead Sea was just sick.” While the magazine has been upgraded with a modern lock to match today’s standards it still has the old tumbler lock that is opened with the large bronze key. Those old tumbler locks were just about standard on magazines years ago. Those bronze keys were heavy and would make a good display item today or maybe a substitute for a blackjack. I don’t think the old locks would stop the modern criminal but then in those days we were all less sophisticated. And maybe I shouldn’t say this but honesty was a bit more prevalent then. Maybe ‘cause old fashioned police brutality still prevailed.

Fe-26Si-9B (wt per cent) alloy has been identified as a potential high-temperature phase change material (PCM) due to its attractive properties, such as its high latent heat of fusion and low volumetric change during solid/liquid transition. For the successful utilisation of this alloy into thermal energy storage (TES) systems, the development of a cost-effective production method is essential. Presently, the Fe-26Si-9B alloy is produced by mixing FeSi alloys with either pure boron element or FeB alloys. However, the use of pure boron is financially prohibitive, and the carbothermic reduction results in high greenhouse gas emissions and high energy consumption in the production of FeB alloys. In this regard, our study proposes a silicothermic reduction method to produce Fe-26Si-9B PCM by using FeSi alloys and B2O3-based oxides. Accordingly, the influence of various parameters on the production process was investigated, including operating temperature, holding time, B2O3 content in the added oxides, and initial Slag/Metal (S/M) ratio. Based on the experimental results, the optimal parameters for producing FeSiB alloys with over 9 wt per cent boron were determined. Consequently, it was documented that the FeSi alloys and the added oxides enriched with 50– 65 wt per cent B2O3 should be subjected to temperatures ranging from 1550–1650°C, maintain an initial S/M ratio exceeding 1, and ensure a holding duration beyond 1 hr. Moreover, the energy consumption of this process was estimated to be ~1.86 MWh/t metal and the mass loss was lower than 7 per cent. Therefore, silicothermic reduction offers a sustainable approach for producing FeSiB alloys with a boron content above 9 wt per cent.

The Canadian Clean Power Coalition (CCPC) was created in 2001 to protect and enhance Canada’s vast coal and other carbon-based resource wealth, and to ensure that environmental public policy decisions recognize that these resources are a Canadian asset, not an environmental liability. To achieve its mandate, CCPC has undertaken to demonstrate technologies for use in new coal-fired power plants to control air emissions including carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxides (SOx), mercury (Hg), and particulates (PM). The first phase of the demonstration project assessed three existing technologies for coal-fired power plants that reduce all emissions, including CO2, to levels equivalent to or below that of gas-fired power plants. The technologies considered in this phase included integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), ‘oxyfuel’ combustion, and amine scrubbing of pulverized coal. These technologies were evaluated with three coal types: Eastern bituminous, western sub-bituminous, and lignite coals. This paper presents the studies, conclusions concerning the capital and operating costs of these technologies, the cost of electricity produced (with CO2 removed), and the cost per tonne of CO2 avoided. It also discusses the potential for using captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, and possible technology enhancements for improving the competitiveness of gasification of low-rank western Canadian coals. The second ongoing phase of CCPC’s work includes the design and construction of a commercial-scale plant to demonstrate the feasibility of integrated gas combined cycle (IGCC) and/or polygeneration technologies and the potential for using the CO2 generated for enhanced recovery of conventional oil.

The history of mill liners has evolved over time and this paper tracks the changes and development of liner technology. It provides an overview of the primary types of liners, the design and the materials of construction. The design of a mill liner is driven by application, materials of construction, casting technology and handling issues. The choice of solid steel, grid liners, rubber or composites and magnetic liners is based on many factors.The methods used for monitoring wear and predicting eventual change out time are many and varied. The contribution of discrete element modeling (DEM) analysis in predicting wear profile is discussed.Mill trajectory and DEM software programs are used with great effect to predict the effect of lifter height, face angle, high low lifters or mill speed. In the field, trial and operational experience is used or improvements/design concepts at one operation are applied to another. Broken mill lifters, accentuated wear and other problems can be better understood using hardness testing, chemical analysis and photo micrograph analysis of pearlitic or martensitic structure along with fracture face observations. This forms a part of the typical root cause analysis. However given correct and sound liner and lifter, feed and discharge design media selection, and materials of construction, the majority of premature liner or bolting failure is normally attributed to incorrect operational methods such as excessive high ball to feed ratio, incorrect mill speed relating to lifter ball throw, incorrect media selection, "tramp" material entering the mill charge from upstream or recirculating process and understanding the specific mill operation in question.It is hoped that this paper will benefit mill operators who are faced with challenges of improving wear life and at the same time optimizing mill throughput and performance.CITATION:Connelly, D and Thompson, C, 2013. This paper is based on observations made during a recent visit by the writer to three of the dust research laboratories .in West Germany, each .of which is mainly concerned with studymg the composition and character of the respirable dust produced in mines or at industrial sites. The three institutes are discussed as regards their orgamzat10n and duties, their methods of dust sampling and analysis, and recent trends in research and development. An extensive bibliography completes the paper. Introduction A RECENT trip to Europe to attend international conferences m Austria and m Belgium gave the writer the opportunity to visit a number of research laboratories and mines in Western Europe. The visits to the dust research laboratories in West Germany are the basis of this report. In Germany, cooperative associations formed prior to and since the turn of the 20th Century to promote the safety and welfare of their workers have recognized the effects of airborne dust on the general health of the labour force.
