In describing the Canadian mineral industry in a world setting, this paper examines the industry from four points of view. First, mineral industry growth is related to trends in economic activity thereby providing a measure of the industry's importance in the Canadian economy. To give perspective to the Canadian scene, reference is made to economic trends in several of the world's leading mineral producing and mineral consuming countries. The Canadian mineral industry is next examined in terms of its major developments of the past 20 years and the resultant size, structure, and production diversity of 1964. The position of the Canadian mineral industry in the world industry is then analyzed by tracing changes in mineral supply and demand patterns. Growth of the Canadian industry depends greatly on expansion of export markets because three fifths of the value of production is accounted for by exports. Finally, attention is directed to the outlook for the Canadian mineral industry. Problems facing the industry are surveyed, and an appraisal is made of economic policies that have encouraged industry growth. A forecast of mineral production value in 1970 is included.

This paper presents experimental evidence that supports the use of bromine/bromide as a potential alternative to conventional cyanidation for gold leaching. The study evaluated a brominebased lixiviant, Stabilized Bromine, with considerably lower vapour pressure than liquid bromine. Using a rotating device, the rate of gold dissolution was determined at various concentrations of this reagent. The reactivity of pure pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite minerals was also evaluated in stabilized bromine reagent. Furthermore, bromine leaching of gold in a number of gold bearing ores was undertaken. Results showed that significantly higher gold recovery can be achieved with bromine than with cyanide when leaching gold encapsulated in sulphides, but bromine consumption was high owing to simultaneous oxidation of the sulphides. The greatest promise for the bromine leach process was with oxidized gold ores. The recovery of gold from oxide ores with bromine was comparable to that achievable with cyanide and bromine consumption was reasonable when leaching was conducted at a near neutral pH of ~6. In the case of oxidized gold ores containing copper mineralization, it is possible that bromine consumption may be lower than cyanide consumption, since there is evidence to suggest that bromine is less reactive than cyanide with copper minerals.

Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

Rare-earth permanent magnetic roll separators, pioneered by our group a few years ago, have distinctly different operation characteristics compared to prior art electromagnetic separators of various types. Many new applications for dry high-intensity (or better: high-force) magnetic separation have been developed in a short time period. It has also been found that the new generation of separators generally are more efficient with regards to removal of weakly magnetic contaminants in glass and ceramic raw materials with minimum loss of valuable product compared to induced magnetic roll (lMR) separators. The latest development is in the area of production of clean magnetic concentrates at high recoveries. It is likely that the PERMROLLR magnetic separator will replace cross-belt and lift-type magnetic separators as a result of this most recent advance.   The paper will review the features of the PERMROLLR magnetic separator in comparison with other types of magnetic separators on the market and give examples on applications.

The Canadian Rare Earth Elements Network (CREEN) was formally launched at the Rare Earth Symposium at The Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM (MetSoc) Conference of Metallurgists in October 2013. CREEN is an industry-led, multi-stakeholder network focused on providing collaborative solutions that will advance Canada’s REE sector to produce a significant proportion of the global production of separated critical rare earth products by 2018. The Network is industry driven by companies with REE projects under development and supported by universities, engineering firms, national and commercial laboratories, and government. CREEN aims to accelerate the development and delivery of timely solutions to technical and economic issues specifically facing Canada’s emerging rare earth sector. It will facilitate partnerships with other national and international organizations to leverage existing research initiatives. It will also support training and education to ensure that the needed qualified human resources are available to achieve the sector’s goals. CREEN membership spans the full rare earth supply chain and technical support organizations, from prospective producers, advanced project developers, national and commercial laboratories, engineering consultants, university researchers, and other innovators. This paper is a retrospective on the development, application, and enhancement of the LaModel program from a personal perspective. The narrative starts with an explanation of the objectives behind the original development of the program and then introduces some of the unique and very practical features of the program. Next, a demonstration of how LaModel was advantageously used to model stresses and displacements in a multiple-seam mining situation with highly variable topography is presented. This is followed by the details of a number of the major enhancements and expansions of the program over the years. A back-analysis of the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse is then briefly presented, along with the associated development of a recommended calibration procedure for the critical input parameters to LaModel. Finally, some of the present research areas are briefly described, and future enhancements are introduced.

"Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the few years. Accidents rates are at a "plateau" and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas disaster, organizations that have "exemplary" safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Other classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA’s Challenger and Columbia disasters and even the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Looking into the root causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization’s mindset? What characterizes these organizations’ decision-making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there specific cultural features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since 1994, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions, based on extensiveresearch since 1997 of organizations that suffered unexpected disasters.The Piper Alpha Oil Rig disaster in the North Sea, on the 6 July 1988, was one of the most pivotal events in safety around the world. It changed the thinking and focus of governments, whole industries and led to numerous books and papers. It resulted in new legislation, textbooks and a critical self-examination by the oil and gas industry.In short, an explosion and fire occurred when a pipe started leaking gas and ignited. A temporary flange, with no safety valve, was used to block off this pipe during a maintenance operation the previous shift. The permit to advise operators not to start the pumps on this line was misplaced and lost. Several deficiencies, problems and system failures coincided. A key factor was that the water deluge system was inoperable at the time and failed to extinguish the large fire that erupted, followed by an even larger gas explosion. The accommodation unit, situated on top of the oil rig, was the main "killing field" - most men gathered here to await instructions (which never came) and where they died from smoke inhalation. Later, a large explosion of the gas pipeline from an adjoined rig exploded and killed more people.The line of events and the associated system failures are all very relevant in the analysis of the accident, and provide the only insight into what caused the accident. But much "further back", inside the organization’s culture, lurks more dark matter. The first inclination is to ask what was "deficient" in the culture. Did they not care enough about safety, or about their people? Did they have a culture where production decisions were more important than safety considerations? Did they ‘coerce’ supervisors and employees to ignore safety precautions or did they just "fly by the seat of their pants"?Not surprisingly, it is very difficult to identify the true nature of the culture in that business because in such an aftermath of death and destruction, no one dare say that the safety culture was a ‘positive one, focused and caring’ or that the company was doing well in safety and that this is only a freak accident. Indeed, there were many deficiencies in the organization’s systems and procedures, such as the permit to work system.But there are some niggling questions: How is then that the Piper Alpha Oil Rig was actually considered the company’s most productive and safest oil rig in the North Sea? Why would this rig win a safety competition, 6 months before the disaster, with the deficient permit as its most outstanding successful system?"

The Ediacara mineral field is classified as a Mississippi Valley type deposit with stratiform mineralization near the base of the Cambrian beds. Mineral deposition was contemporaneous with sedmentation and reerystallization, and mobilization took place after lithification of the sediments. Several mechanisms of deposition were possible.INTRODUCTIONThe Ediacara mineral field is located in the Mt. James Range approximately 300 miles north of Adelaide, about 12 miles west of Beltana railway siding and 10 miles east of Lake Torrens. It is isolated geographically from similar deposits of equivalent age and environment in the Flinders Range Province (Fig. 1). The climate may be described as semi arid with high summer temperatures and frequent dust storms. Occasional thunder storms are the main source of rain in the summer months.The exact date of discovery is unknown, but is believed to be about middle of the last century. Ulrich (1872) was the first geologist to report on the field. At that time only the southern portion of the field had been prospected (and abandoned). Although the prospects did not appear encouraging Ulrich advised prospecting of the shales and testing beneath the limestone.In 1888, Rosewarne, an Inspector of Mines, visited the Southern Workings and queried whether they were connected with some lode at deeper level or were merely bedded deposits. The first geological map with sections was drawn by H.Y.L. Brown (Brown 1892).Brown recognized three principal rock formations as dolomitic sandstone, kaolinised shales and sandstone, and quartzites and sandstone in descending order. "By using the latest generation of medium voltage frequency converters, new possibilities have arisen to improve the grinding process. Beside all the direct and indirect advantages, several dedicated functions have now been implemented for ring geared grinding mills in the minerals industry. The advanced operational functions ensure a smooth, safe and reliable operation with minimum stress for the mechanical equipment and therefore highest availability of the mill. Several papers have already been presented concerning the benefits of using this state of the art technology for mill drives (Ravani von Ow and Bomvisinho, 2010; Ravani von Ow and Gerhard, 2010). However this paper will not only show and explain the operational benefit of these functions, but will focus on the experiences gained with this kind of sophisticated ring geared mill drive system. Several measurements of different operating conditions (starting, frozen charge remover, controlled roll back, backlash, etc.) made on an installed and commissioned 2 x 5 MW dual pinion ring geared mill drive system will be shown and discussed. Also the accuracy of the load sharing between the two 5 MW motors during starting, normal operation and stopping will be demonstrated using real measurements from an operating system. Finally the inherent features of these drive systems are briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONLooking at the demands of grinding mills, we can split them into operational, maintenance and protective demands. For smooth and safe operation, it is important that critical situations are avoided as much as possible. Maintenance functionality must be quick and easy to execute, while protection of the system is important during all operating conditions. ABB has considered all these demands during development of their dedicated mill functions. By adding an additional controller (mill controller), not only a lot of application related functionality and protection is included, but also the interface between the mill drive system and the customer’s distributed control system (DCS) is simplified."

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. At Calliachar Burn, 14 steeply dipping quartz-sulphide veins, with and without gold, infill master joints that crosscut gently dipping metasediments and metabasics of the Pitlochry Schist Formation. The wallrock is extremely bleached and enriched in sericite, chlorite and carbonate. Gold grades vary from high with quartz-galena-pyrite to low with galena-chalcopyrite; the gold forms electrum inclusions smaller than 20 micrometres in pyrite or, rarely, arsenopyrite. At Urlar Burn, gold is present in small amounts in 4 quartz-galena-chalcopyrite veins. Although much of the mineralogy is similar to that at Calliachar, there are significant differences in Sb-, Te-, Bi- and Hg-bearing phases. Fluid inclusion data suggest mineralisation occurred over the range 320-140 degrees C, from fluids with significant CO2 and 2-13 wt% equiv. NaCl. To protect mine personnel and moving equipment at underground roof fall areas, mine operators typically install steel sets, which are covered with wooden blocks and backfilled with an expanding type cement material. In large roof falls, the cost of void backfilling becomes prohibitively high causing some mines to leave the voids open. However, the durability of wood over time and the capability of the steel set and wood lagging to resist falling rock are unknown. This has caused concerns for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and ground control engineers. During past two years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC designed and developed various impact-resistant steel set designs that were approved by MSHA and installed in various underground fall rehabilitations. This paper presents the patent pending impact-resistant steel set design methodology, including (1) steel set design per AISC national standard, (2) design, development, and laboratory testing of a water proof composite impact resistant lagging panel, and (3) impact resistant steel set design based on Law of Conservation of Energy. Two underground cases will be included detailing the application of the system.

This report is the 20th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations; it is the second4/ to be issued on a calendar-year basis. Previous reports related largely to publications by Bureau authors during the reporting period. This one discusses the publications issued during 1955 and in addition describes briefly the work in progress during the year. Further details on the published work may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. The Bureau continues to direct its research and technologic work on coal toward safer and more efficient mining, improved preparation, and more effective utilization, with the ultimate twin goals of promoting conservation and insuring that coal will make its maximum contribution to the Nation's industrial capacity. Significant advances toward these goals were made in 1955.

The Mt Wright Project is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Underground Development of the current Mt Wright orebody commenced in June 2006 and the first production ore was brought to surface in June 2007. The orebody is a rhyolite pipe containing fine-grained disseminated gold in a granite host rock. Ground conditions tend to be good to excellent throughout development, with some minor deformation experienced when stope-sized excavations are formed. The mine commenced as a sublevel open stoping (SLOS) operation with the intent to utilise development waste to back fill isolated upper level stopes while developing to the bottom of the known orebody. The mine plan intended to commence production with a bottom-up primary/secondary stoping retreat through the main orebody utilising cemented fill. Some challenges were faced during the initial production phase that included:•Ongoing underground diamond drilling and updating of the block model resulted in some issues reconciling the grade control results to the resource model. This was primarily due to the high variability of grade which in turn caused difficulties in accurately identifying areas of low and high-grade.•The cost of establishing and operating a cemented fill plant to achieve the planned extraction sequence of the orebody had increased significantly beyond initial estimations.•Geotechnical conditions such as stress orientations, ground behavior and response to the forming of excavations learned through the mining of the upper level stopes were different to the assumptions made during the initial design.A number of in-house and external reviews of the mining method were completed which has resulted in a revised mining plan. This paper will summarise the challenges faced and the implementation of the mine plan to date.

Detection and assessment of severe geological anomalies ahead of a longwall face greatly benefits the mining operation. Electromagnetic-based Radio Imaging Method (RIM) is one of the most promising geophysical methods for this task. Based on two decades of development, the latest RIM instrumentation (RIM-IV) has expanded its operational range up to 1,800ft.A site demonstration of the RIM-IV technology was recently conducted within a longwall panel. An extensive ground truth study was performed to evaluate the accuracy of the RIM survey results. This study compared the generated RIM tomograms of attenuation rate with the mapped geological anomalies. Three different approaches have been employed to examine the accuracy of the RIM results and to correlate the measured signal attenuation rates with physical properties of the coal seam. The study shows that the RIM-IV technology is able to identify and delineate those geological features that would severely affect the longwall mining operation.

This paper provides updates to the paper published by the lead author at RETC 2011 with a summary of developments in technologies, products, and approaches to corrosion analyses of gravity sewer tunnels and microtunnels. This paper presents approaches in evaluating degradation of reinforced concrete liners. Also, the carbon footprint of conventional concrete liners and alternative “green” liners are compared and their life cycle costs are considered. A few case histories from the past decade are provided indicating the latest and emerging trends in liner protection.

Following the blasting fatality on 17 December 2009, Landau Colliery was forced to change from the blasting practices that had been utilized since the start-up of the mine. Since then, attempts have been made to optimize blasting results. The challenge is rooted to the mining environment - during the early life of the mine, mining took place in virgin areas, whereas currently mining is taking place in areas overlying old underground bord and pillar workings. The underground bord and pillar workings aggravate phenomena such as spontaneous combustion, hot holes, and sinkholes. The 2009 fatality was attributed to hot holes causing premature detonation. Landau has been struggling with poor results from their overburden and coal blasts; leading to poor fragmentation of overburden and the PI parting that lies between the No.1 and No.2 coal seams. An extensive literature survey was completed in order to identify possible alternative solutions that could be evaluated for this unique mining environment, which demands a high degree of caution during mining to ensure factors such as dragline stability and personnel safety. The literature survey confirmed that the previous blasting technique, which was mainly characterized by air decking, was indeed the more efficient, although it was deemed unsafe because of the possibility of hot holes and the high sensitivity of detonators. Potential modifications to the blasting technique were modelled in a Microsoft Excel simulation that was available from the mine, and pit visits were conducted in order to determine whether implementation would be a problem. From the model it is evident that results can be improved by changing the current burden and spacing ratio. Visiting the pit revealed that the tie-in pattern and drilling inaccuracies are contributing to problem areas.

Paper presented at the UK minerals industry conference and published in: Minerals extraction towards the millennium. UK minerals industry conference, 3-5 April 1995, University of Leeds. London: Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, 1995. The various types of risks that arise in minerals industry projects are usually financial, technical, or environmental, and the key to valid risk analysis is complete integration of all risks, both within and between categories. Geographical information systems (GIS) and geostatistical simulation methods can provide a means of integrating data and conducting realistic risk analyses. Risk can be quantified but there are limitations to numerical approaches to risk assessment. Realistic quantification requires adequate models of the processes that give rise to risk. Risk perception must also be taken into account when conducting risk assessment and reporting the results, especially in public forums. The modelling and visualisation capabilities of a combined GIS/simulation system can provide the means of dealing with perception in risk analysis

A Flyrock Prevention Taskforce was established in Kentucky with the support of Kentucky's Department of Natural Resources, Kentucky's Explosives Industry, and the University of Kentucky. This paper presents the initial work of the Flyrock Prevention Taskforce towards its missions of identifying the root causes of flyrock incidents based on the analysis of previous events, and tracking the progress of flyrock elimination in the future. Work identifying root causes of flyrock events is presented through the development of a database which manages information about the blasts which caused flyrock. This data includes: blasting and seismograph records, drill logs, videos of the event when available, company notes/incident reports, and any additional information regarding probable cause. Work tracking the progression of flyrock elimination efforts is presented in this paper through the introduction of a flyrock index. Several metrics are proposed for this index, and are discussed for their appropriateness and shortcomings. In order for these indexes to be valid forms of tracking flyrock incident rates additional records must be kept and reported, such as the annual consumption of explosives by surface coal blasting. Suggestions for record keeping, flyrock investigation practices, and means of tracking flyrock incident rates are proposed in this paper.

"A kinematically admissible velocity field is applied to study the arching phenomenon in a cohesionless granular backfill placed between two rough vertical inflexible walls. The study is different from the previous works which are almost entirely based on statically admissible stress fields. It is shown that the development of arches is strongly influenced by the previous loading history of the backfill which controls the nature of the constitutive laws that govern the mode of stress deformation of the backfill. This preliminary study employs simple models in order to show the potential use of such an approach in evaluating and understanding mine backfill behaviour in the underground excavation. The pressure exerted on the floor supporting the backfill is also studied in some detail.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the importance of the design of mine backfill has been discussed extensively by a number of authors, i.e. Hassani et al. (1985), such theories have not as yet been incorporated in design criteria for underground mine backfilling operation . One factor that such theories must incorporate is the so-called arching action .The phenomenon of arching has been the subject of study by many researchers in the field of civil engineering and mining engineering. Among these scholars the works of Terzaghi (1943), Krynine (1945), Lusher and Hoeg (1964) and Handy (1985) are noteworthy. All these authors use a statically admissible stress field as a starting point to develop their theories. The approach taken by the authors of the present paper is completely different because they employ a kinematicallyadmissible velocity field. It is their belief that the arching phenomenon is closely linked to the interlocking of grains as manifested by the degree of dilatation of the granular mass when subjected to a shearing process.This paper is written in the following sequence. To define the interlocking quantitatively it is necessary to state the constitutive law governing the stress deformation characateristics of the granular mass. This is done in the next section as the law proposed by Poorooshasb and Pietruszazck (1985, 1986) is stated and simplified to suit the present analysis. Next the mode of formation of an arch in a simple system consisting of a mass of backfill sandwiched between two vertical rough walls of infinite extent is examined. The velocity field obtained from the above example is used to obtain solutions to two more complicated situations. The first situation assumes that the backfill is supported, in addition to the vertical rough walls, by a Winkler foundation at its base. The second situation assumes that the Winkler foundation has been replaced by a horizontal beam of uniform section and simply supported at its extremities. The findings of the study are summarized and their practical implications discussed in the concluding remarks."
