"Highland Valley Copper is a conventional truck-shovel mining and flotation concentrator operation located 75 km southwest of Kamloops, British Columbia (Fig. 1).The ore is situated within a porphyry copper deposit and is mined at a rate of 135,000 mt/day from two separate open pits. The nearby mill produces concentrates containing 375 million pounds of copper and 5 million pounds of molybdenum metal yearly. In the Valley pit, head grades are roughly 0.40% Cu at a 0.23% Cu equivalent cut-off. The Valley pit strip ratio currently sits at 0.55:1 with waste quantities made up of separate rock and unconsolidated overburden units. From the mill, concentrates are trucked to nearby Ashcroft and then hauled by rail to ocean port facilities in Vancouver. The mine employs 950 people and is planned to operate until 2009. The operation is a partnership between Teck Cominco (63.9%), BHP Billiton (33.6%), and others (2.5%). Management is shared by the two principal owners and directed by a management committee."

"The present study explores the reactivity and burnability of cement raw mixes containing fired red or white ceramic tile wastes or combinations of the two as alternative raw materials. The results showed that the new raw mixes containing these wastes are technically viable. The reactivity and burnability of the new raw mixes have been evaluated; confirming very good results when the particle size of wastes was less than 90 µm. The chemical and mineralogical compositions of the new clinkers were comparable to clinker manufactured with conventional raw materials. The mix of red and white ceramic tile waste was found to perform as well or better than each type of waste separately, a promising indication that separation of the two would be unnecessary for these purposes.IntroductionPortland cement clinker production consumes large amounts of energy (850 kcal/kg clinker) and has a considerable environmental impact. This involves massive quarrying for raw materials (limestone, clay etc), as it takes 1.7 tonnes to produce one tonne of clinker, as well as the emission of greenhouse and other gases (NOx, SO2, CO2) into the atmosphere. Around 850 kg of CO2 are emitted per tonne of clinker produced.The cement industry is looking for solutions to these problems, to attain sustainability and comply with the Kyoto Protocol commitments [1,2]. For that reason, experimental ways are being explored to develop cements whose manufacture is less energy-intensive, less damaging to the surrounding environment and with lower tendency to emit polluting gas. One of the reach this objective is the use of industrial waste and by-products as alternative materials for cement manufacture. Such alternative materials may partially replace fuel [3,4], conventional raw materials [5-8] or clinker in the final composition of the cement [9]."

INTRODUCTION. THE predominating value of the ores now being treated by the Palmarejo and Mexican Gold Fields, Ltd., is silver, although some gold is also carried. The present method of treatment consists of wet-crushing and concentrating, followed by the cyanidation of the unroasted sands and slimes. The sands are treated by leaching and the so-called accumulated slimes by a system of agitation and decantation. It is only within very recent years that the cyanidation of unroasted silver-ores has been commercially successful. In fact, at the time operations were begun at the cyanide-plant at Chinipas, February, 1902, I knew of no other leaching-plant treating similar ores successfully. The cyanide treatment of the Palmarejo ores differs but little from the ordinary practice in cyaniding gold-ores; and perhaps but little, if any, new information concerning the metallurgy of silver is to be gleaned from it. PALMAREJO MINE. The Palmarejo mines are located in the southwestern part of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet. The mills, 12. miles distant, are situated on the Chinipas river, near the town of Chinipas, which is about 150 miles northeast of Agiabampo, on the Gulf of California. Supplies are shipped via this port as this route is the best and most direct to the property. The ore-bodies in the Palmarejo mines have been deposited. along a series of rock-fractures, caused by an intrusion of eruptive rock. The most important of these fractures or fissures, both in width and value, are the Prieta and Blanca veins, which.

Bituminous coal mining in the United States is currently experiencing a period of rapid growth which began in the early 1960's. Future demands are conservatively predicted to rise to 700 million tons by 1980 and to anywhere between 1 to 3 billion tons by the turn of the century. This means a continuous expansion of coal production by a factor of at least two can be expected before the end of the century. Over the last few years, production from underground mining has decreased; yet it is about 50% of the total coal output. In the absence of any discovery of near surface coal deposits, and even after conceding that some deeper deposits can be surface mined with changes in technology it can be reasonably assumed that coal production from underground will continue to play an important part in solving the energy crisis.

"Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting appropriate systems at the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation.Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights into the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement throughout the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is often not available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available, it requires a major time commitment and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support.Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long, flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This article focuses on the optimization of the cable-bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine in Quebec, Canada by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

Systematic practices for protecting crops from frost damage began in the United Metes more then 40 years ago when the Weather Bureau Fruit-Frost Warning Service was organized; however, various practices employed in frost protection are centuries old. Although there are areas where little doubt exists as to whether protection is needed, there are also circumstances where there is some doubt as to the need for frost protection. Many factors influence this, including not only critical temperatures but also the maturity dates of the crops relative to marketing. Critical temperatures for frost damage to trees, plants, blossoms, and fruits very with weather, plant variety and nutrition, and stage of growth. In the case of truck crops, a single night of protection from frost injury might yield big dividends with a variety of sweet corn or tomato that matures early while price is high yet be worth very little with a midseason or late-maturing variety. Consequently, it is the individual grower who must decide whether to use frost-protective measures on the basis of his returns, the quantity and quality of his crop, the marketing situation, the sensitivity of his crops to frost damage, and the frequency of damaging frost in his area.

By using the data of E.A. Hersam and F.C. Bond's equation for energy consumption in comminution, a method was developed to analyze the performance of industrial jaw crushers. The study showed that industrial jaw crushers are generally operated below capacity. The study also showed that industrial jaw crushers generally have sufficient installed power to operate at, full capacity. The method presented can be used to estimate the capacities and power requirements of jaw crushers.

Flame cutting and welding is one of the major causes of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines. On May 20, 2006, a flame cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On January 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that resulted in sealing of the mine for an extended period. Finally, on March 19, 1992, an explosion at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine that was caused by welding resulted in four fatalities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of fires and explosions. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations, and MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The results were used to identify and compare differences between flame cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, Eastern and Western mines, low seam and high seam mines, room and pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices and interventions were developed to reduce the number of fires and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this work. COMPREHENSIVE summary is presented of results of several years of research at the Bureau of Mines Mining Research Center at Denver on adapting and applying techniques of statistical analysis in mine and mineral-deposit sampling and in computing grade and tonnage of ore for a mineral deposit. In addition to elementary statistical theory the material presented in the bulletin includes: (1) Certain special statistical techniques that have been found useful in mining applications; (2) problems, implications, and limitations that may be encountered in applying these techniques in mine sampling and evaluation; and (3) numerous examples to demonstrate application of the theory and techniques.

The project to rebuild the smelting furnaces at the Anglo American - Barro Alto ferronickel smelter, located in Goias, Brasil, was initiated in September 2013. To optimize the capital cost, while maximizing furnace integrity and robustness, a design basis giving flexibility to ore composition variation was developed in order to ensure sustained nameplate production. The resulting capital efficient, fasttracked project execution was accomplished through the creation of an integrated project team of Anglo American and Hatch through FEL 3 and FEL 4 phases of the project. The integrated team addressed the project challenges through a cooperative and versatile approach, created by access to knowledge, experience and systems in both Anglo American and Hatch. The team could operate at an optimized speed of execution, as demonstrated in the FEL 3 and FEL 4 completion durations, as well as efficiently mitigating any risks of increasing cost or delaying schedule by utilizing lessons learned and team knowledge from Anglo American on the original green-field project and Platinum smelters and Hatch on similar reference ferronickel furnace rebuilds. Other critical drivers of project cost minimization and revenue loss/generation (considering production revenue of each furnace) are scheduled durations for construction, commissioning and ramp-up. The integrated team commenced construction, commission and ramp-up planning almost one year in advance of the shutdown and this paper will discuss the strategies developed to reduce risks and optimize the construction schedule to mitigate revenue loss and optimize ramp-up time to sustained operation at nameplate capacity.

One of man's primary tools is the ordinary screen. Whether of mesh or punched plate, it is fundamental in principle, primitive in its origin, and common in its application through all the world; and yet the screen goes only a part of the way toward the completion of its job of separating materials according to size. It will give a practical and continuous separation according to "size," as generally understood (accurate according to the breadth), but the accurate and continuous separation as to thickness is not a practical function of the screen. Still, all through history, the thickness of particles of material must have been important to many people; therefore, one would expect that some standard method of sizing for thickness would long since have been evolved and that equipment applying that method would be readily available to any in¬dustry. This, however, seems not to be so.

RECIPITATION in alloys is undoubtedly one of the most essential phase transformations in metallurgy and, besides, it is a phenomenon of great interest to physicists. It seems then that it can be chosen as a topic for an Annual IMD Lecture. Of course, the subject is a very wide one and I shall discuss here only a very restricted part of it. I should like to show why it is now considered that there is, at the beginning of the process, a stage distinct from the real precipitation, which is the pre-precipitation. We shall be chiefly interested in the atomic structure of the metal in this preprecipi-tation stage. Numerous reviews on this subject have been published recently.', ' The latest was given by H. K. Hardyh t the last meeting of the Institute of Metals in London. One of the most complete articles has been written by the late Dr. Geisler." I should like, at the beginning of this lecture, to pay a tribute to the memory of our friend Arthur Geisler. Some of the ideas which will be developed here are different from those advocated by him. But everybody knows the considerable progress in experiment and in theory which we owe to him and, personally, I deeply feel how fruitful have been the long discussions which we have had during many years. Experimental Basis of the Precipitation Problems Let us recall the essential facts pertaining to the problem of the precipitation. The starting point and the final one are well known. The initial stage is the supersaturated solid solution before quenching. The dissolved atoms replace some of the atoms of the solvent at the points of a definite lattice. It is generally considered that the distribution of the atoms is completely random, and that the lattice distortions are relatively weak. These assumptions are only an approximation. It has now beenproven", that, in some cases, the dissolved atoms have a tendency to segregate to form very small nuclei. These fluctuations of composition are greater than the normal statistical fluctuations in a purely random alloy. We shall see the role played by these nuclei later. The final state is obtained by a very long annealing at such a temperature that an equilibrium is reached in a reasonable time. The alloy is then composed of a matrix which is a saturated solid solution, much poorer than the initial one. Imbedded

The generation and disposal of solid waste from electric utility plants using a lime or limestone wet-scrubbing system and the potential effects on the environment were estimated for 1975 and 1980. The study indicated that in 1975 approximately 5.8 million tons of desulfurization solid waste (50 percent solids) will be generated. In 1980, when it is estimated that desulfurization will become commercially accepted, approximately 71.4 million tons of this material will be generated for disposal and/or utilization. The desulfurization waste material when combined with lime, fly ash, and water may have potential for use as a roadbase material, landfill reclamation, and synthetic aggregate.

Drilling for roof bolting has created a new dust problem for the coal-mining industry. Drilling is inherently dusty, and control of dust produced by drilling vertical or nearly vertical holes is much more difficult than control of that produced by drilling flat or down holes.4/ Also, the dust produced by roof drilling differs in composition from that produced by drill-fur, or cutting the coal face because it contains a significantly greater amount of free silica and therefore presents a greater potential hazard of silicosis. Roof bolting has been practiced successfully in the mines of the St. Joseph Lead Co. in southeastern Missouri for over 20 years, but it was not until 1947 and 1948 that large-scale roof-bolting experiments were conducted in coal mines.5/ Although the need for dust control in conjunction with roof drilling was recognized from the beginning, the development and acceptance of roof bolting progressed so rapidly during 1949 and 1950 that solution of the dust problem lagged behind other engineering phases of the technique.

Among the methods of mineral processing, gravity concentration methods are, probably, those which have lower costs, higher capacities and lower operational complexity. In order to be really effective, these methods require a feed size distribution in which the particles are liberated. Further, there must be a significant difference (usually higher than 1-1.5) among the real densities of the particles. However, in most cases, the traditional gravity concentrators (jigs, shaking tables, spirals and dense medium hydrocyclones) lose efficiency (sharpness of cut and recovery) when the mean diameter of particles are lower than 0.05mm and the difference among densities are smaller than 1. Most gravity concentrators developed in the last 20 years are based on the use of centrifugal forces that create large "apparent gravitational gradient" seeking to overcome the limitations of particles size distribution. This paper presents the experience of the CVRD Research Center in evaluation and development of new process based on using this new generation of gravity concentrators.

Ruthenium (Ru) is known as a platinum group element with a very small production volume. In fact, the worldwide annual production of primary Ru metal is only about 20-30 tons, and it depends on the amount of Pt produced, since Ru is a byproduct from Pt smelting. The primary uses of Ru are as a material for resistors, as a catalyst for electrode materials, and as a sputtering target for hard disk memory storage. In order to recover Ru from the spent sand-blasting abrasive media generated during the cleaning of the apparatus used for Ru sputtering, a hydrometallurgical recovery process using hypochlorite solution has been investigated. In this study, various types of recycling processes that are presently under development are also introduced, and their features and differences are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of the new recycling processes are evaluated, and the possibility of establishing new recycling processes in the future is discussed from a multilateral perspective.

The purpose of any steel-making process is to convert the two raw materials iron and scrap into steel. The chemical analysis of the steel is set within certain limits which involve the physical proper- ties desired by the consumer. In addition to tensile properties a large number of other properties are at the present time desired, such as impact resistance, grain size regulation, specific degrees of hardenability, resistance to creep at high temperatures, resistance to expansion on heat treatment, the ability of the product to undergo extreme amounts of cold deformation without failure, and many other properties which are not directly related to the specified chemical analysis. Variations in many of the properties of plain-carbon steels are due to elements and compounds not included in the ordinary "five element"§ composition. Such variations result primarily from variations in oxidation of the metal in the furnace and from the deoxidation method employed. The steel-making problem therefore resolves itself into two distinct sections: (I) the elimination of certain elements from the charge (the iron and scrap entering the furnace) and the addition of materials to meet the chemical specifications for the heat; (2) the manipulation of the slag and metal and the process of deoxidation to give certain desired properties in the steel entirely apart from the chemical analysis specified. Globalization and a growing demand for limited raw material resources have forced changes in the approach to the supply chain. This is particularly true in the case of rare earths, which are regarded as one of the most important development indicators of modern technologies. To ensure a secure supply of commodities, the European economies have been prompted to investigate REE recovery from sources which until recently, for technical or economic reasons, were considered not sufficiently attractive. An interesting example is apatite phosphogypsum waste dumps. The REE content in these waste dumps averages around 0.5-1 %. One of the most important phosphogypsum locations in Poland is the Lower Silesia region where a phosphoric acid Chemical Plant "Wizów" operated for several dozen years. In this work, rare earths are leached from the phosphogypsum crystalline structure by a chemical treatment and can then be separated into individual chemical compounds. The technology used in these recovery tests, matches up to a coherent European raw materials policy supporting effective management of resources and promoting waste materials recycling.

"In early 2000, CANMET-MMSL was engaged by the Ontario Ministry of Labour (OMOL) to conduct an international study of the practices, in several key mining jurisdictions, of determining the criteria that are used to decide when the wire ropes used in mine hoisting are to be retired from service. Subsequently, the author visited key officials and institutions in Canada, the United States, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland. Material from the Australian province of New South Wales and Hungary was also included.The report that resulted included, among other sections: (1) the history of wire ropes and trends in manufacturing technology; (2) a review of mine hoisting practices; (3) the requirements regarding safety factors; (4) a review of the various operations and their potential future development; (5) the criteria for rope replacement; (6) potential future developments that could take place in both hoisting and rope inspection practices in Canada; and (7) recommendations.Subsequently, the report was issued by OMOL, and as a CD-ROM by CANMETMMSL. In this paper the author presents the key findings and the recommendations made in the study."
