In North America, pipelines move more material than any other form of transportation. 1 Pipelines have been used principally for the transportation of liquids and gases; however, slurry pipelines have made notable gains in recent years enabling solid materials to be moved efficiently by pipelines. The obvious advantages of pipe-lines --low maintenance, low operating costs, minimal impact on the environment, greater land use, low labor intensity, safety and high operating factor --have stimulated researchers in England, West Germany, Japan, USSR and the USA during the past ten years to develop pneumatic capsule pipelines for the movement of bulk materials in large quantities. As a result of this work, pneumatic capsule pipelines are now available for the movement of dense bulk materials. Through these pneumatic capsule pipelines, material is moved in wheeled capsules which are pushed through the pipeline by flowing air. In this paper, a capsule pipeline system developed by the Georgia Institute of Technology and Tubexpress Systems, Inc. of Houston, Texas is discussed. The Tubexpress System Major Components The pipe used for a Tubexpress capsule system is standard thin wall welded steel pipe. Since pressures in the system generally do not exceed one atmosphere, the controlling design criteria for wall thickness of the pipeline is pressure from the overburden of the backfill if the line is buried or the structural requirements for supporting itself and the load if it is suspended or supported on piers. "The objective of this work is to validate a methodology for spatially predicting the fracture intensity, defined as the average fracture area per unit volume. First, using the observations from drill holes, the fracture intensity is directly inferred at the support of drill-hole composites based on a Terzaghi correction. Subsequently, the composite values are interpolated to larger blocks. The methodology is tested on sets of simulated fracture networks, in which each fracture consists of a disc with a random diameter, random position and random orientation. For each of these simulated networks, one can calculate the actual fracture intensity within any region of space, based on geometric considerations. A regular sampling mesh is then defined to emulate a set of vertical drill holes and the proposed methodology is applied to predict the fracture intensity, both globally and locally. The actual and predicted fracture intensities are finally compared, showing that predictions are unbiased, insofar as, on average, the prediction error is always close to zero. Also, the error dispersion increases when the support of the prediction decreases, which is consistent with the well-known support effect. In practice, the proposed methodology allows predicting fracture intensity based exclusively on drill-hole information, without the need for simulating fracture networks in space, hence its interest. INTRODUCTION The characterization of fractures in rock masses is an important part in the evaluation of mechanical and hydraulic properties of rocks. Fractures have a large impact in disciplines such as reservoir engineering, safety of underground storage of CO2 or of nuclear waste, assessment of high-enthalpy geothermal installations, safety of mining exploitations, efficiency of in-situ leaching operations or of extraction by block-caving. As a rock mass property, fractures must be characterized in the three-dimensional space, whereas observations are limited to 1D (drill holes) and 2D (outcrops, drift walls), moreover very often to rather short stations, so that the available data are subject to geometric bias, truncation and censoring. Fracture characteristics includes the number of fracture sets and, for each set, the number, orientation, spacing, location, shape and size of the fractures must be inferred from data sampling. Some important parameters that are considered nearly in all models are fracture intensity and fracture size."

Introduction A longwall operator can make few changes to increase output, significantly reduce respirable dust, and decrease power consumption. Reducing drum speed, and thereby cutting with increased pick penetration, is one. This article defines the benefits of deep cutting in terms of reduced dust production and power consumption. It also identifies the practical aspects of high pick penetration in terms of shearer performance and coal loading. Before examining some practical aspects of reducing drum speed and looking at the theoretical background, it is worthwhile to summarize what is meant by high penetration and deep cutting, and what potential benefits and pitfalls may be expected. Deep cutting (in the sense of high penetration rather than wide web) can be defined in one or more of the following ways: • Cutting with an average pick penetration distance higher than that used in the past. • Cutting with a pick penetration higher than the longwall operator would have used if the advantages of deep and slow cutting were not considered. • Cutting with a well-designed shearer drum below 40 rpm. All these definitions are slightly arbitrary. They are given to provide a basis for discussion and to make the point that any move towards deeper, more efficient cutting can result in operational benefits. The benefits of deep cutting appear in many different areas. The most noticeable benefit, provided suitable instruments are available, is the reduction of airborne respirable dust. During an experiment on a longwall in the Pittsburgh seam, a nearly four to one reduction in dust levels was seen when drum speed was halved. Not all studies have shown such a big reduction, but it seems that some benefit is almost always obtained when drum speed is reduced. Production rate and specific power consumption are also affected (in a positive sense) by reducing drum speed or increasing pick penetration. Although these changes may not be as spectacular as those in dust level, they contribute to the economic return of the longwall operation. Similarly, improved washability through fines reduction may have a beneficial economic effect. Cutting with shearer drums operating at lower speeds does have some possible deleterious impacts that an operator should be aware of. For example, cutting reactions - loads imposed on the picks by the coal being cut - will be increased as a deeper cut is used. Steps must, therefore, be taken to ensure the stability of the shearer and provide an adequate haulage effort. These increased cutting reactions also result in higher loads on the power transmission system (gearboxes, ranging arms, pick boxes, etc.) from the shearer motor(s) to the pick tip. These higher loads must be anticipated and provided for with the necessary hardware. In particular, extra haulage power must be provided with low drum speeds, since haulage effort required increases roughly in proportion with pick penetration. Because the drum will be rotating more slowly or will have fewer picks, the load on shearer components will also be more variable. If suitable, robust equipment is not used, this increased vibration will decrease reliability. Benefits of Deep Cutting Lower dust levels, decreased specific power consumption, and improved product washability are the most noticeable benefits of reduced drum speeds. Although the benefits will vary greatly with mining conditions and the type of coal, some examples of what can be expected are described below. Reduced Dust Levels Figure 1 shows principal results of a study on the effects of reduced drum speed conducted on a longwall in the Pittsburgh seam (Ludlow, 1981). This figure shows that average dust production was reduced by about 70% when drum speed was halved. By making some assumptions about such quantities as coal density, it is possible to apply this proportional reduction to the quantity of respirable dust liberated per ton of coal mined. When this is done, two kinds of results are obtained: • At 70 rpm, about 1 g (15 gr) of airborne respirable dust is created for every ton mined (roughly one part per million). At 35 rpm, only 0.28-0.37 g/t (3.9-5.1 gr per st) of coal mined become airborne respirable dust. • At 35 rpm, nearly four times the amount of coal may be mined before the compliance level is exceeded, compared with 70 rpm.

This paper describes a two-stage reverse flotation method developed at the Mineral Resources Institute (MRII, University of Alabama, for Kerr-McGee Corporation (KMC), to separate the trona (Na2CO3 ? NaHCO3 ? 2H2O) from a saline deposit containing halite, borax, minor salts, and water insoluble materials. In the first stage, trona is depressed with Quebracho, and the insoluble gangue is floated with fatty acid. In the second stage, trona is floated with cresylic acid. The flotation concentrates contained better than 90% trona with insolubles ranging between 1 and 2%. Although the trona recoveries were low, optimization and middlings recycled in a continuous circuit could substantially increase the value.

The continuous operation of decanters in the mining industry relies heavily on the use of synthetic flocculants. Today, as plants seek to lower production costs by increasing throughput it is necessary to obtain optimum performance from the flocculant. Factors affecting such optimization include charge and molecular weight selection, and efficiency of mixing the highly viscous polymer solution with the feed slurry. Beyond maximizing dilution of the solution, the last factor is often ignored. This paper describes a series of calculations, based on fundamental transport theories, that have been used to describe flow conditions within decanter feed wells and to help select flocculant addition points. Examples are shown for the case of hydroxamated polyacrylamide flocculants in the Bayer Process, where proper selection of the addition points can result in lower flocculant dosage and better control of the decanters.

In 1971, United States Borax & Chemical Corporation (U.S.Borax) initiated a mineral exploration program on federal lands in Southeast Alaska, with the commitment that any possible development would be done with great care for the environment. This program resulted in the discovery of a molybdenum deposit and the location of mining claims in 1974, in an area 45 miles east of Ketchikan, now called the Quartz Hill Molybdenum Project (Figure 1). At the time of this mineral discovery, the area was part of the Tongass National Forest, managed by the Forest Service, United States Department of Agriculture, and open to mineral entry and multiple use. In late 1978, the area was designated Misty Fjords National Monument and closed to mineral entry, and in late 1980 the area surrounding Quartz Hill was classified as Wilderness. These new laws and regulations, as well as the special interest environmental groups which oppose resource development, have significantly delayed and increased the costs of developing Quartz Hill.

The Line Creek Mine is operated by Crows Nest Resources Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited. It is located approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (refer to figure 1). The Line Creek coal deposit is part of the Upper Elk Coalfield in the East Kootenays. The coal is a medium volatile, low sulfur, bituminous coal and is used as a coking coal. Coal close to the outcrop is typically of low F.S.I. and is processed for thermal use. The present pits have a total coal reserve of 30 million clean tonnes and is a multi-bench, open-pit operation. The coal is recovered by front shovel and backhoe combination, and hauled to the plant with a fleet of 120-tonne and 40-tonne capacity trucks. Line Creek is unique in that it can simultaneously treat both metallurgical and thermal coal in separate processing facilities (refer to figure 2). Run-of-mine coal is delivered to the truck dump. The plus 50 mm material is scalped off and reduced to minus 50 mm in two rotary breakers. The raw coal is then conveyed to one of five, 5000-tonne capacity, silos. Typically one silo is used for thermal coal and four for metallurgical coal (refer to figure 3).

The title of this paper implies the presence of silver, nickel, and cobalt minerals at, the Alhambra mine. Perhaps this should be amplified to include uranium, as pitchblende also occurs, possibly in mineable quantifies. A brief history of the Alhambra mine is of interest, both from a historical angle and as pointing up the importance of geology in the-present development. The Alhambra is one of several mines in the Bullards Peak or Black Hawk dis¬trict, ass it is more familiarly known, in southwestern. New Mexico, which was mined for silver in the 1880?s and 18901s, Silver valued between $500,000 and $1,000,000 was extracted from the mine in the 10 years prior to 1893, when operations ceased. Almost all the silver mined was native silver, although a small quantity of argentite was produced. Nickel and cobalt were recognized in the ores, but they were thought to be of no consequence.

Laboratory column studies were conducted in order to assess the effectiveness of slag and red mud reactive barriers for cleaning up leachates generated at mining and waste disposal sites and loaded with copper and manganese. Solutions containing the metals of concern were prepared by dissolving the required quantities of CuSO4?5H2O and MnSO4?H2O in distilled water so that Cu concentration was 100 ppm and Mn 20 ppm. Flow rates of 25 mL.h-1 for Cu solution and 75 mL.h-1 for Mn solution were used in order to simulate aquifer water velocities of 1 ft/d and 3 ft/d respectively. Solutions were pumped upflow, in Plexiglas laboratory columns filled with each reactive medium, using peristaltic pumps. Measurements of middle and outflow column pH, redox potential, conductivity and elements concentration were performed to provide information regarding removal mechanisms for both elements and exhaustion/inactivation rates for each reactive medium. Both reactive media showed fairly good removal efficiency over the period studied. Copper was mainly removed by precipitation and formation of Cu(OH)2 while removal of manganese was due to precipitation of Mn(OH2).

Based on the classical definition of optimization, flotation plants of today are far from being perfect, effective, or functional as possible. Though considerable efforts have been expanded in the optimization endeavor during the last decade, much more needs to be done in the future to optimize our flotation plants and operations. The major problem in designing an optimum flotation circuit is that the flotation process depends on the interaction of several physical and chemical parameters. In the past, there has been a tendency to only consider the effects of chemical factors such as flotation reagents: collectors, frothers, conditioning reagents, pH, etc. On the physical side, the emphasis has been limited to the liberation characteristics, grinding time, percent, solids in the pulp and flotation time. Its only recently that we are employing particle size analyses, on-stream analysis, oxidation reduction potential and the like, as operating controls. The design, operation and control of a mineral processing plant depends on costs incurred at all stages, from inception (testing for flowsheet development) through plant closure and beyond. To ensure that micro- and macro- engineering technology is transferred to operational levels, the academia, testing engineers, designers, operators, consultants and management must all get involved in the transformation process. Historically, in the 1950’s engineering empiricism was strengthened through micro-engineering based on fundamental and mechanism. Unique scientific apparatus such as zeta meter and infrasizer were used to test new hypotheses. With the advent of computers in the 60s and 70s, complex differential equations were solved to study and understand unit processes and to assess mechanism assumptions. Such efforts contributed to improved understanding of the unit operations such as comminution, flotation, thickening, filtration and the like. In the 80s and 90s with the availability of more sophisticated computer technology involving modeling procedures, advanced numerical methods, image analysis, nonlinear-curve-fitting and data adjustments, it was possible to test newly developed models under the production environments. These innovations are now available to develop simulator and sensors (such as particle size analyses) for macro-engineering purposes including plant design, automatic controls and optimization. Accordingly, it behooves the mining companies and plant operators to take advantage of these new developments to control a large number of physical and chemical parameters involved in the plant operation and optimization. This is especially important in light of declining head grades and increasing operating costs in the U.S. minerals industry if it wishes to maintain a competitive edge in the international marketplace. In regard to the future R & D activities in the field, in order to arrive at useful correlations in micro- engineering research, it is essential to consider a plant operation as an interactive engineering system representing the combined effects of physics and chemistry, equipment and operation. Underclays are associated with coals found in eastern Oklahoma. These coals are of bituminous rank and are in beds of Middle and Late Pennsylvanian age. They occur in an area of about 8,000 mi2, within the southern part of the Western Interior Coal Region. The rocks of the area consist of a thick series of sandstones, shales, underclays, coals, and limestones. There are more than 40 beds of bituminous coal in the state, but only 12 of these have been mined over large areas. The 12 are, from oldest to youngest: the lower Hartshorne, upper Hartshorne, McAlester (Stigler), upper McAlester, Cavanal, Rowe, Secor, Weir-Pittsburg, Mineral, Croweburg, Iron Post, and Dawson coals. None of the underclay associated with these coal beds is known to have been exploited commercially. Nine samples of underclay from beneath the Croweburg coal were collected over a wide area in the eastern Oklahoma coal field for evaluation. The underclays are usually shades of gray with brown or orange iron-oxide staining. Although soft and plastic in some places, they are generally hard and slickensided, and contain abundant carbonized plant fragments. Bulk chemical analyses, clay mineral identification, and ceramic tests were performed on each underclay sample. The dominant clay minerals are illite and kaolinite with some mixed-layer clays. Silica (Si02) ranges from 45.96% to 59.03% and alumina (Al2O3) varies from 14.98% to 23.60%. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Re- search Center conducted the ceramic evaluations. Samples were slow fired from 1,000°C to 1,250°C in 50°C intervals. Bulk density, color, percent linear shrinkage, and percent absorption were determined for each slow fire test. All Croweburg underclay samples are best suited for building brick.

Geologic condition is one of the most important factors for longwall mining operations, especially, the existence of faults limits the mineable area, or cause stress variations at the longwall face. Recently, a longwall panel passed through a fault at the Shoal Creek Mine of Drummond Company, Inc. The fault was situated diagonally along the longwall face and the coal seam was displaced up to 2.4 m (8.0 ft) in a mode of a normal fault. LoSCoMS (Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System) was used for monitoring shield pressure every minute and interpreting data in terms of setting, developing and final pressures. The results of the analysis regarding the influence of the fault on the shield pressure are presented.

The potential for the utilization solar energy for the production of industrial process steer in mineral processing industries is discussed briefly. To advance the technical and economic feasibility of solar-thermal systems applications, U.S. Department of Energy has funded several projects. NL industries of Newberry Springs, California is one among them and has been chosen as a case study. The NL Industries solar system consists of 950 square meters of Del, single-axis, tracking, parabolic-trough, concentrating collectors. It was designee to produce a portion of the 420°. 530°k. steam utilized in a trying operation reduce the moisture content of hectorite ore from 10 percent to 4 percent. (Hectorite is an hydrous magnesium silicate which, when refined, is of significant commercial interest because of its applications in various chemical and food processes.) is estimated that implementation or this solar system could result an annual savings of 3.545 billion KJ ,3.360 billion BTUs), or the equivalent of 90 cubic meters (600 barrels) of oil and a net reduction of 1,860 kilograms (4100 pounds) of air pollutants annually. The technical, economic and institutional issues encountered in the course of this project are also discussed. Finally, the impact of the commercialization of solar energy applications in mineral processing industries is evaluated.

It has been accepted almost as dogma that sampling contributes most of the error to fluctuations in gold fire assays. Differences in assay results on pulp material from the same sample interval are frequently regarded as evidence of the presence of the so called "nugget effect" or relatively coarse gold particles. It is true that if coarse gold particles are present they contribute to substantial sampling fluctuations, but while the process of sampling is probably the major source, the analytical process cannot -be completely ignored as a possible contributor to erratic assay results. In order to maintain a stable assay process, the analytic part of the system must be kept in control as well as the sampling and preparation part. One way of monitoring the performance of the analytic system is to systematically assay standard material whose sampling characteristics are carefully controlled. Gold assay standards are not prepared nor can they be prepared to account for both sampling and analytical errors. It is not possible to send coarse material to a lab for preparation (which includes both the processes of comminution and splitting) followed by fire assay, to make inferences only about the fire assay process. Because most gold ores are very heterogeneous, sampling errors would in most cases completely mask the contribution of the analytical errors. Assay standard material is prepared only to assess the accuracy and variability in the fire assay process.

With the occurrences of serious mill structural failures on both ball and primary mills, the mining industry has entered the era of detailed fabrication specifications. Such specifications, however, have been developed as individual entities, often by people not related to the mill design function. Therefore, there has been no effort to relate mill failure or safety to the existence or elimination of specific fabrication flaws; that is, no cause-effect failure relationships have been developed. The omission of this step produces a specification which can be termed uneconomical at best. The present paper attempts to fill this void, by reviewing methods for design consideration of flawed structures, and describing experimental tests used to tie such data to a meaningful quality assurance program in fabrication.

A method for removing nickel and vanadium contaminants from spent HDS catalysts involves pretreating the catalyst with H2S followed by extracting the metals with an acidic solution of ferric ion. The ferric ion solution alone removes significant amounts of active ingredients, cobalt and molybdenum; however, by pretreating with H2S, the extraction becomes more selective for removal of Ni and V.

Historically, the control of flotation operations has been viewed by many as an art. Only recently has process measurement and control come to be viewed not as an ?art? but as a very complex and productive science. In recent years, process control applications to flotation plants have been established and already some gains have been reported for several industrial operations using individual stabilizing control loops including level, pulp flow, pulp density, reagent addition rate and pH (Paakinen, 1979; Hales, 1985). The use of process control computers combined with on-line x-ray florescence (XRF) in industrial flotation circuits has made the application of more sophisticated control techniques feasible in the mineral recovery process. In spite of the availability of reliable instrumentation in modern flotation plants, satisfactory control strategies are difficult to develop and implement. Extremely important factors such as changes in ore type, liberation characteristics, flotability, degree of oxidation on particle surfaces, and specific gravity constitute unmeasured disturbances to the process. Most current control systems cannot adapt specifically to such disturbances.

Several methods have been proposed for determining the tensile strength of rock. These have been tried out over the past several years, but the results have been erratic and of doubtful value. The tensile strength of rock is its weakest property, and this property apparently enters into all failure phenomena whether underground or on the slope of an open pit. Therefore, it is essential that detailed quantitative information is known about the tensile strength of rock if the design engineer is going to select the proper pit' slope, pit orientation, or orientation of underground workings so as to give the most economical and safest mining condition. This quantitative information may be used to orient the pit in such a manner as to allow steep slopes along two sides. This information may possibly be used to orient the direction of either underground workings or open pits so as to decrease powder consumption and to increase blasting efficiency. Hence it is of prime importance that a method of determining accurately the tensile strength of rocks be developed.

INTRODUCTION Social awareness of the detrimental impact of man-made wastes on our environment has grown considerably during the last two decades. Increased public and institutional concerns have resulted in the implementation of a wide variety of regulatory controls of disposal of wastes. These regulations have often reflected significant conservatism in expecting guaranteed elimination of pollution risks. This sort of expectation assumed a state of knowledge which was not readily available to the major producers of wastes. The mining industry, in particular, has been affected by such regulations in terms of excessive costs and loss of benefit. As a result, investigations are in progress (1) to generate newer methods for satisfactory stabilization of mine and mill wastes and (2) to apply the available technology to achieve the standards set by the regulatory agencies at reasonable costs. This paper presents a conceptual scheme for stabilization of mill wastes by suitable management of operations and accelerated consolidation of tailings slurries. The main discussion in this paper is aimed at the ability of the proposed scheme to address the major considerations in effective disposal. Comparison in both cost and effectiveness are also made between the proposed scheme and various other currently used disposal concepts. MAJOR CONSIDERATIONS IN EFFECTIVE DISPOSAL The primary objective of an effective tailings disposal scheme is to provide containment of the contaminants in such a manner that the undesirable impact of the wastes on the three basic elements of our environment--land, air, and water-would be minimal. Bearing the above objective in mind, one may justifiably list the major considerations in the choice of the disposal scheme in terms of its effects on land, air, and water (Bromwell, 1976) as follows: Effects on Land (1) whether the scheme makes optimal use of land.
