Introduction Brine reservoirs along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf coasts are currently under study to investigate the technical and economic viability of production wells designed to extract methane gas in solution. The effect of well pressure drawdown on reservoir rock and associated overburden material is important to well performance predictions and the analysis of potential subsidence problems. Consequently a series of compaction tests have been conducted on sandstone and shale cored from a test well drilled near Hitchcock, Texas, in order to determine the variation of mechanical properties to be expected over the producing life of the formation. Previous Work The referenced tests are part of an extended study of geopressured-geothermal reservoir behavior, including compaction (Jogi, Gray, Ashman, and Thompson, 1981 and Jogi, Kalra, Gray, and Thompson, 1981) and creep (Thompson, Jogi, Gray, and Richardson, 1981) tests of reservoir rock and related reservoir performance studies (Rago, Okhuma, Seperhnoori, and Thompson, 1985). Recent work has considered the nonlinear constitutive behavior of sandstone (Fahrenthold and Gray, 1985 and 19861, while additional experimental work is reported here. Geological structure and composition of the Hitchcock field from which the core samples were obtained is discussed by Light (1985). Experimental Procedure Compaction tests were conducted on cylindrical cores, nominally 2.75 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter, with independent control of the axial, confining, and pore pressures. Axial and radial deformation of the samples were measured in tests over a range of effective stress states expected to develop over the reservoir lifetime. The term effective stress as used here refers to the algebraic difference of the total stress and pore pressure, with compression taken as positive. Three types of compaction tests were conducted on the sandstone. In the uniaxial tests, axial total stress and radial strain were held constant as the pore pressure was reduced, similating one dimensional compaction which may occur during reservoir depletion. In the triaxial tests, radial total stress and pore pressure were held constant as the axial total stress was increased, duplicating conventional rock compaction test procedures. In the pore pressure drawdown tests, axial and radial total stresses were held constant while the pore pressure was reduced, in order to investigate differences in sample response to mechanical and pore pressure loading. Compaction tests were also conducted on shale material obtained from the reservoir overburden. The field coring process provided few consolidated shale sections sufficiently large to allow preparation of samples with the dimensions described above. With additional attrition during sample preparation of this brittle material, ultimate yield of the coring effort was limited. The few available samples were tested in uniaxial and triaxial tests similar to those described above. The use of displacement transducers to measure sample deformation avoided the difficulty of strain gauge installation on this material. Test Results The sandstone and shale both demonstrated nonlinear stress-strain behavior, with hysteresis and residual strain present upon unloading. Polynomial interpolation of the stress-strain curves was used in the calculation of incremental values for the loading and unloading moduli. Figures 1 and 2 show example axial effective stress-axial strain curves for triaxial tests conducted on sandstone and shale samples. The figures plot incremental stress and strain variables, defined as deviations from the state of prestress to which the sample was subjected. The state of prestress was varied between tests in order to investigate material behavior over the entire stress and strain space of interest. A new technology for recovery of metals from spent catalysts containing aluminum, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel and vanadium was developed. The catalysts are decomposed in two consecutive pressure leaching steps. Sodium aluminate-sodium hydroxide systems are lixiviants in both leaching steps. Selective extraction of molybdenum and vanadium is achieved in the first leaching step. The leach liquor is processed for separation and recovery of these two metals. The residue from the first leaching step is further processed in a second leaching step where alumina is solubilized. The residue from this operation is a nickel-cobalt concentrate. Alumina is separated from the second stage leach liquor by precipitation; the depleted liquor, a sodium aluminate solution, is recycled to the first and second leaching step. This technology has advantages over other approaches for the recovery of metals from spent catalysts because no solid waste is generated.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is designing new outlet facilities for Lake Mathews, including a junction shaft, connecting tunnels, and an ear-shore outlet tower. Since Lake Mathews must remain operational during construction, groundwater inflow potential is a concern. This paper describes the challenges and methods used to investigate rock mass and groundwater conditions at an operational reservoir, where offshore and onshore geotechnical exploration was performed. Several investigative and analytical methods were used to characterize rock mass and groundwater conditions, including rock coring, downhole geophysical and video surveys, hydraulic conductivity testing, automated groundwater level monitoring, and laboratory testing.

Between 1920 and 19609 viewed on a world wide basis, longwall was regarded as a' system for difficult and deep conditions and associated with intensive labour extraction. Today the world looks on longwall in the hope that it can produce the next really big break through in productivity, Three correlated machinery developments have made this possible, but it is not only the machinery developments, interesting though these be in themselves, but together with developments in control systems of these machines that longwall now looks so much more attractive, The machinery concerned is, of courses:- 1. The Anderton Shearer Loader - A miner that takes a narrow strip off the, face at rates acceptable to modern mining engineers. 2. An Armoured Flexible, Conveyor which can be kept in close contact with the face and still convey coal as it is snaked over to the faces 3. Powered support systems which can be mechanised and controlled with reliability at any distance from the individual support itself.

Increasing concerns of industrial hygiene and worker health issues and resulting regulatory actions, coupled with continuing advances in mining systems, are placing new burdens on the industry and Federal Government; particularly, mine ventilation departments. More encompassing worker health programs are required to respond to Federal promulgation of regulations and to keep abreast of techno- logical advances in the mining industry. The relationship between the mining industry and Federal agencies involved in rulemaking is presented, along with the rationale of an Industrial Hygiene Management Plan. This plan or strategy focuses on developing partnerships and collaborative research groups to address the controversial health issues facing not only the mining workforce, but our society.

Experimental apparatus for the determination of powder wettability is described. The principle of the technique is based on the measurement of the equilibrium capillary pressure in a packed bed of particles. Both the macroscopic solid-solution-vapour contact angle, e, and the specific surface area, A(m2g-1), of the powder, can be obtained. Experiments on angular quartz particles have been performed. A wide range of situations have been covered: hydrophobic and hydrophobic particles wetted with water, a variety of organic liquids and solutions of surfactants. The results show that reliable and reproducible values for 0 and A for angular and relatively coarse powders can be obtained with the proposed equipment for advancing liquid fronts in the absence of soluble surfactants. In the latter case and for receding liquid fronts in general, only qualitative trends have been obtained.

This paper addresses the long-term cost and availability of primary gold production from the Republic of South Africa. Forty-four major producing or developing operations were evaluated. The analyses present estimates concerning 1) total refined gold potentially available from demonstrated resources, 2) annual production potential into the next century, 3) long-term weighted average total costs for underground mine production and surface waste reprocessing, 4) the expected annual decrease in gold production, and 5) the ability of other market economy countries to compensate for the anticipated decline in South African gold output. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, Minerals Availability Program appraisal that evaluated the worldwide availability of gold and silver from primary precious metal operations and as a byproduct of base metal production.

New and improved benefication techniques are available to allow the production of clay minerals of exceptionally high purity. This is particularly true for kaolins and smectites. Wet processing techniques including particle size separation, high intensity magnetic separation, chemical leaching, flotation, and selective flocculation are described and results and applications are discussed. The blending of clay minerals with other minerals provide opportunites to make special ceramic materials such as cordierite and other minerals which have very special ceramic properties including low heat expansion, high fired strength, low absorption, and other desired qualities.

FMC's Paradise Peak Mine was discovered in July 1983. The deposit at discovery contained 11,340 ,000 tonnes (12,500,000 tons) of ore grading 3.71 glt (0.108 oz/ton) Au and 120 glt (3.5 oz/ton) Ag. A feasibility study was completed by Davy McKee in May 1984, with detailed engineering starting in June 1984. Construction of the facility started on January 2, 1985 with plant start-up taking place on April 14, 1986, two and one half months ahead of schedule and more than 10% under budget. This paper describes the status of the operation approximately 1-1/2 years after start-up including revisions and additions to equipment and process.

The Elliot Lake Centre was established in 1965 as an independent Centre for Continuing Education offering a variety of adult education services. In 1976 all retraining and community college type activities were transferred to the Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology which had opened a branch campus in Elliot Lake. Upon the completion of this transfer, the Elliot Lake Centre was then contracted in 1977 by the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology to study the feasibility of establishing a research and information institute dealing with various health and safety concerns of the uranium worker. By late 1980, a federal charter was granted for the establishment of the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety, made possible through the cooperative efforts of the Governments of Canada and Ontario, the Ontario uranium mining and refining companies, and the Elliot Lake Centre. On 1 April 1981 the Institute officially began operations. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND COORDINATION In May 1978 the Elliot Lake Centre initiated a voluntary sputum cytology program for uranium workers. This program was financed by the Ontario uranium mining companies: Agnew Lake Mines Limited near Sudbury; Madawaska Mines Limited in Bancroft, and Denison Mines Limited and Rio Algom Limited in Elliot Lake. In 1981 additional funding was granted by Eldorado Nuclear Limited for a small group of employees at the company's uranium refinery in Port Hope, Ontario. Initially in 1978, program participants were accepted according to length of employment, radiation exposure levels (calculated in working level months) and/or smoking history. These restrictions were abolished within a few months and all uranium workers were encouraged to participate. From 1978 to 1979 the sputum cytology program was medically directed by personnel from the Montreal Cancer Institute. Until 1979 all data maintenance for the program was performed manually, however the effort required to sustain the system increased significantly as the number of participants grew. In September 1979 the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital, under the direction of Dr. F.G. Pearson, submitted a proposal to the Elliot Lake Centre to develop a data processing system to help coordinate the surveillance program. In October 1979, Dr. Pearson became the new Project Director. Director of the Cytology Program is Dr. D.W. Thompson of the University of Toronto who is responsible for all cytologic analyses. Developmental work to establish the new surveillance system was initiated in January 1980 and became fully operational at the beginning of March 1981. The following sections describe the Elliot Lake operations of the sputum cytology program now conducted by the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety. PROGRAM PARTICIPATION As of 1 September 1981 the sputum cytology program has 518 participants enrolled. Eligibility is restricted only to a willingness to participate and the ability of an individual to produce adequate sputum samples. Each participant registers for the program at the Institute and is given personal instruction on methods of sputum collection. The majority of the participants in this program are employed by the uranium mining industry; some work for firms which are contracted by the larger companies. Many participants are either retired from the work force or receive disability pensions or workmen's compensation benefits. Other participants have been employed in the uranium mining industry and have since gone on to other employment; some work for various federal and provincial governmental agencies concerned with the mining industry. Some participants are referred to the program by their family physicians because of smoking histories and/or various respiratory conditions. A small number of these individuals have never been involved in the mining industry at all. A chart describing program participation by employment is found in Appendix 1. PROGRAM REGISTRATION In the Elliot Lake area, persons interested in registering in the program are required to go directly to the Sputum Cytology office located at the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety. Each individual is interviewed personally by the Program Officer. For the employees of Agnew Lake Mines, Madawaska Mines and the Port Hope refinery of Eldorado Nuclear Limited, registration is possible during the Program Officer's semi-annual on-sitevisits. Participants are assigned, in chronological order, "program numbers" for easier identification. File labels are color-coded according to place of residence or, in some instances, place of employment. A new radioactive tracer method for the measurement of airflow in inaccessible airways was developed. The method can be used in situations where studies of the mine-ventilation system are not possible using conventional flowmeters (anemometers). The method was tested in the ventilation laboratory at the University of Kentucky and in the US Bureau of Mines Experimental Underground Coal Mine and was utilized in leakage, dilution and flow-velocity measurements.

The coming years should see moderate growth in the US coal industry. That growth may come at the expense of the oil and natural gas industries. Conoco pegs coal growth at 2% a year, until the year 2000. During that same period, Conoco projects only 0.5% annual oil growth and "a flat or negative trendline" for natural gas. This is compounded by the fact that coal has a delivered cost per Btu that is only half as much as it is for natural gas and only a third as much as it is for oil. So said Ralph Bailey to many of the 2600 attending the opening session of the American Mining Congress Coal Convention, May 12-15, in Pittsburgh, PA. Bailey is chairman of the AMC. He is also chairman of Conoco. While coal's projected growth is not spectacular, "it is in fact almost an assured growth," Bailey said. Weak oil and gas prices will likely prevent faster growth for US coal. Most of coal's increased demand will come from the electric utility industry and expanded steam coal exports. Conoco's study projects that domestic coal demand will be strengthened in the 1990s. By then, the present surge of nuclear power plant constuction will be over. And there will be a lack of acceptably priced, large-scale generation alternatives for utilities. "It is not likely that any electric utility is going to be ordering new nuclear reactors," Bailey said. "And as oil and gas supplies become scarcer and more costly, it is only logical that coal is going to fill the gap." At the same time, Bailey believes the US coal industry must find ways to lower its costs. He said cost excesses can be found in "regulatory overkill, labor, and simply bad habits" hidden by years of high inflation. "Those costs have now been laid bare, because we are going through a pe¬riod of disinflation. We have to put our house in order, particularly if we are going to compete in world markets." Bailey also touched on coal research. "The industry certainly accepts the fact that we must find a way to burn coal as cleanly as possible. A lot of work in that regard is going on. I expect there will be some significant break-throughs." Bailey said the coal industry is being squeezed this year. Last year, coal customers accumulated inventories in anticipation of a major coal strike that never materialized. Now, many utility customers are working down these inventories. So they are not taking deliveries on their coal contracts. But coal use is up in 1985, compared with 1984, Bailey said. So increased coal use, along with supply drawdown, should strengthen the coal market before the year is out, he said. After Bailey's presentation, some 100 speakers addressed policy and technical topics at 15 sessions during the four-day meeting. It was the first time since 1977 that the AMC Coal Convention has been held in Pittsburgh. And this year's attendance was up 40% from the last AMC Coal Convention held two years ago in St. Louis, MO. This year's registrants included 228 companies, 225 manufacturers, and 106 associated members. The only negative was the David Lawrence Convention Center. It was less than ideal. By turns, meeting rooms were too small, too cramped, or too far from one another. The session on longwall mining was so crowded that the doors were propped open so conference delegates could peer in. A concurrent manufacturers' forum session needed 50 more chairs to accommodate those wanting to attend. However, on to summaries of some of the presentations. Coal transportation and export Since Congress approved the 1980 Staggers Rail Act, railroad rates for hauling coal have not been excessive. In fact, rail rates for coal have increased less than 0.5% a year, in real terms, since 1980. Moreover, the market oriented principles written into Staggers are contributing to the improved financial and operational health of the nation's railroads. But no railroad is earning excessive profits. That is the gist of a coal transportation study being completed by the US Department of Energy. William Vaughan is DOE's assistant secretary for fossil energy. He affirmed the thrust of the upcoming report. Vaughan did allow that Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) regulations on rate reasonableness could permit the railroads to exploit their monopoly power on captive shippers. The lack of visibility near earthmoving equipment results in an average of five fatalities in U.S. surface mines each year. These accidents occur when a piece of equipment either strikes another vehicle or worker, or travels over the edge of an embankment. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have evaluated off-the-shelf proximity warning systems that sense obstacles near the equipment and provide an alarm to the operator. Limitations of existing systems have necessitated the development of new systems designed specifically for mining equipment, including a GPS-based proximity warning system and a computer-assisted stereovision system.

A new seven kilometer long subway line is being constructed through dense glacial soils under a major thoroughfare in Toronto. Eductor, deep well and vacuum wellpoint systems are being used to lower the water levels by as much as 16 metres for the construction of the twin tunnels and associated structures. The design and performance of the dewatering systems will be described. Unanticipated difficulties and their solution will be presented.

In today?s mining environment, improving production, performance, productivity and profitability is crucial. Production, ancillary, plant and shipping equipment need to be monitored and controlled by online systems delivering production statistics and real-time information to everyone involved, including equipment operators. Traditional systems currently in use today, operate in an iterative mode constantly switching between scheduling and execution. However, the real world tends to change in ways that invalidate such advance schedules. Agent based computing has been hailed as the most significant breakthrough in software development and the new revolution in software. Agent systems are being used in an increasingly wide variety of applications, including complex mission critical systems such as Air Traffic Control. This paper presents the possible ways that multi-agent systems can be applied to mine production and rehabilitation scheduling problems with focus on real time fleet management, plant and equipment performance monitoring, downtime and delay reporting, stockpile management, personnel and equipment tracking and product distribution and transportation.

Tabular uranium ore in the Grants uranium region, New Mexico, occurs as tabular layers of a urano-organic mixture suspended within host sandstones of the Morrison Formation. The intimate urano-organic association points to the organic material as the main ore control. Petrographic evidence indicates that the organic material was postdepositionally introduced into the host sandstone, probably as humic acids; however, the mechanism by which these acids precipitated from solution remains uncertain. A model, the cation scavenging model, is proposed in this paper to explain humic acid precipitation. The model, supported by evidence from regional alteration studies of the host sandstones, proposes that cations responsible for humic acid precipitation were scavenged from framework grains which altered during passage of the humic-rich fluids through the host sandstone. This process, coupled with the affinity of organic molecules for each other, caused flocculation of humic acids into tabular zones. The precipitated humic substances then continued to concentrate uranium to form the orebodies. The cation scavenging model requires only one solution, the humic-bearing solution, in the precipitation process. All cations necessary for humic acid precipitation originated in the host sandstones. This model contrasts with a previously proposed model--the brine interface or two solution hypothesis--in which it was proposed that a cation-rich brine introduced into the host sandstones provided the cations necessary for humic acid precipitation. The brine hypothesis has several drawbacks, one of which is unrealistic hydrologic reconstructions necessary to accommodate mineralization at various stratigraphic horizons in the Morrison Formation. Moreover, no mineralogic evidence exists to suggest a brine occupied the host sandstones at the time of mineralization. The proposed cation scavenging model for humic acid precipitation not only readily accounts for humic acid precipitation, but also is consistent with geologic observations and regional alteration studies.

INTRODUCTION "When there is an economic need for cleaning fine coal to low ash, the technical difficulties will be solved. The utilization of fines below 28 mesh will determine the degree to which beneficiation will be carried. Whenever these "fines" will be processed into smokeless fuels or used as new materials for the chemical industry or for hydrogenation, a higher degree of cleaning will be economically justified”.(l) This quote from the 1943 edition of Coal Preparation correctly anticipates the use of fines as "smokeless" fuel or as a future component of boiler fuel and a1 so as a raw material for the chemical industry or possible new uses such as for internal combustion engines. Fines utilization depends upon an economic need and possibly neglects to say an environmental need or a government funded development program as the prime mover for development. In any event, this conference is faced with the "need" to beneficiate fine coal and undoubtedly among the processes that will be discussed are the unit processes of future coal preparation facilities. HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT It is interesting to look at where we have been, where we are now and where we possibly will be in the future. In order to put some limitations on this presentation, we will for the most part confine our remarks to this century and particularly developments since World War II. We also will limit our remarks to the preparation of bituminous coals in the United States, and for the most part, to wet processes. In the 1943 edition of Coal Preparation, clues to the processes being used to beneficiate coal are contained in the Chapter Titles. An extensive treatment of "Hand Picking" was contained in Chapter 8. Chapter 7 contained a description of methods for "Preparation at the Face". Chapter 18 dealt with "Slurries, Sludges, Slimes and Water Treatment" and defined this size of coal as being the size at which "Jigs and Chance Cones are usually dispensed with and other methods such as the hydrator, tables, and froth flotation are employed. Generally the limit is 1.7mm to 3.4mm. In the days before World War I1 the then modern bituminous coal preparation plant contained jigs or Chance Cones for the coarse material +6.35mm, concentrating tables, launders or some classifier type of coal washer for the fines (6.35 x 0.15mm), and froth flotation as the only method of cleaning minus 0.15mm coal which was used very sparingly.

Two integral components of the 30 CFR 48 training requirements mandated for new miners, newly employed experienced miners, and the annual refresher training of all miners are hazard recognition and prevention of accidents. In these categories, instruction shall include the recognition and avoidance of hazards present in the mine, and a review of accidents and their causes. Unlike instruction preparation for fact-based material, program development for hazard recognition places a particular challenge before safety-training specialists because they are often limited in their ability to adequately gauge the trainees' levels awareness prior to training. Further, they must also assure that the training is relevant, and it is presented in a thought-provoking manner. Computer-based instruction is particularly well suited for assisting trainers in developing hazard-recognition topics because it can be used in pre-training and post-training modes for assessment of training effectiveness, in addition to use as a presentation tool. Therefore, this paper will present a recent approach developed at Penn State to apply this technology for assessment and instruction of accident prevention through hazard recognition, with an application prepared for surface coal mines.

Introduction In the same way that a blueprint communicates informa¬tion about a structure, a systems architecture should provide information that guides the construction and implementation of a computing system. Taking the blueprint analogy a step further, a plot plan can also show where, in the "bigger picture," a particular design fits (if in fact it does) and what a builder needs to know about the environment in which he or she will operate. In the context of business systems, a meaningful architecture should convey the following: • the primary purpose of computer-based systems rela¬tive to particular tasks or operations, • the relationship of the systems to each other and an indication of their interaction and dependencies, • the relationship of the systems relative to the organiza¬tion and its objectives, • indications of where IS/IT resources can best be allo¬cated to support the organization and • the overall context in which new systems and technolo¬gies can be assessed for both their impacts on current systems and on the organization itself. In theory, a well-designed systems architecture should allow an organization to focus its resources on those aspects of its business that matter most, thus, leveraging investments in information technology to a competitive advantage. In addition, the way that a computing systems architecture is represented should be un¬derstandable to non-IT staff, and it should be eas¬ily recognized by the people it supports. This pa¬per attempts to show that a meaningful systems model exists and that its applica¬tion to mining can achieve the desired results. The following discus¬sion is based on the au¬thors interpretation of a concept referred to as the computer integrated manu¬acturing (CIM) model, as developed by Allen-Bradley. An inherent strength of the CIM approach is that the model combines aspects of business-reporting structures with the manufacturing process itself. What results is a systems frame¬work that is aligned with relevant business processes and is, therefore, easier for non-IS/IT personnel to interpret. The successful application of the CIM model can be seen in a large number of both discrete and process-manufacturing facilities throughout the United States. This paper provides a brief overview of the CIM model and then describes how the model can be applied at a conceptual level to the mining industry. Finally, this paper proposes an extension to the CIM model that the authors believe will make it easier to understand and apply. CIM model As shown on Fig. 1, the CIM model begins with the most detailed levels of process equipment and works its way up to the highest level of consolidated financial reporting. Systems at each level are characterized by common attributes, users, time frames, etc., providing a clear picture of their interac¬tion. Further analysis of the relationships between systems and between levels provides insight into the opportunities for integration. Regardless of the industry or processes involved, the CIM model provides a framework in which the characteristics of systems and the data they manage can be predicted based on the nature of the business function they support. In general, as data moves upward from the lower rungs of the CIM model, it changes from de¬scribing the physical na¬ture of a process to describ¬ing its financial aspects (e.g., from productivity to cost). The use of a laboratory-scale magnetic fluid-based separator for coal separations was examined. A Frantz laboratory magnetic separator was modified by fabricating new pole pieces of the appropriate geometry to provide the proper magnetic field gradients. Two separation chambers, which were constructed of Plexiglas, were designed to fit between the pole pieces. A commercially available, water-based, ferromagnetic fluid was used as the separating medium. The separating density was changed by varying the current intensity of the electromagnet coil. Both batch and continuous separations were made using 0.59 x 0.50-mm and 0.18 x 0. 15-mm coal. The results are compared to those obtained using organic liquids.
