Now that the former Soviet Union has divided into 15 countries, it is necessary to analyze separately the industrial mineral position of each of these countries. Industrial mineral data The former USSR was one of the world's largest producers of industrial minerals and had some of the world's largest reserves. Production and reserve figures, however, must be qualified. Even when these figures were reported by the Soviets, it was not clear that the production figures were for products that would be equally marketable in a competitive market economy. The reserve figures are based on the Soviet system of reserve classification, which is not directly equatable with the US Geological Survey and US Bureau of Mines classifications of economic reserves in market economy countries. The Soviets reserve classification system, in terms of which reserve figures will be given, is based on the reliability of the quantity of the material in place. The Soviet system assigns each occurrence to one of seven categories A, B, C1 and C2 are considered reserves; P1, P2, and P3 are considered resources. Mining in the former Soviet Union was authorized on the basis of the reserves in place in categories A, B and C, which had to be in prescribed ratios. However, the categories A, B and C do not necessarily correspond to Western concepts of material economically exploitable under present market prices with existing technologies.

Introduction Although innovative coal extraction technology can be approached from many angles, this paper focuses on three: innovation in response to rising costs, to changing mining conditions, and to regulatory issues. Before exploring these three subjects, however, a basic question needs to be raised. Why Innovation? Coal is widely heralded, and quite correctly so, as the United States' "ace in the hole." It has been said that the U.S. is to coal what the Arabs are to oil. The implication is that we have nearly inexhaustible reserves - that coal is cheap, plentiful, and easy to extract. Indeed, because our current productive capacity is estimated to be 15-20% greater than demand, we have been given a false sense of security about the ease of future coal extraction. Therefore, innovative measures are being concentrated on developing technologies for the demand side of coal, including power generation, synthetic fuels, and industrial applications. What is often forgotten is that the unit cost of producing energy from these new technologies depends critically on the cost of the coal feedstock -in some cases the coal consumed accounts for more than one-third the total cost. Thus, while the developers of the end-use technologies struggle to improve the overall thermal efficiency of their process by one or two per¬centage points to make the energy produced competitive in the marketplace, they often are unaware of the risk of a 3 to 6% increase in coal costs wiping out the expensive, hard-earned results of their research. Energy planners are just beginning to realize that coal is not a uniform commodity available at low cost in infinite quantities. Coal is a heterogeneous material whose cost and quality vary widely with local conditions. To produce the massive amounts of projected coal-based energy at reasonable costs, we urgently need devel¬opments in extraction technology, as well as in end-use technology. Thus, coal extraction, coal conversion and utilization, and end -use energy consumption must be viewed as highly interdependent parts of an energy supply network (Fig. 1). And current emphasis on conversion and utilization must be balanced by more emphasis on upstream technologies, including coal extraction. Even more important, the impacts of innovation (or the lack thereof) in any one technology area in the energy supply network need to be discussed and understood by those working in each of the other areas. Why innovation in coal ex¬traction technology? Figuratively, we are all in the "coal boat" together - geologists, miners, transporters, processors, power producers, distributors, and consumers. Innovation is required from each of these sectors to overcome the obstacles that prevent greater use of our most abundant national energy resource. All other links in the coal energy supply network depend on large volumes of coal produced at reasonable costs. Declines in productivity, therefore, must be reversed; the more difficult mining conditions that will be encountered call for new methods and equipment, and regulatory issues must be resolved if the coal ex¬traction link is to be a strength rather than a weakness in the planned U.S. transition to an economy based more on coal and less on imported petroleum. Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock fragmentation mechanism by continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the: fragmentation process were found to be: bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut, and cutting drum rotational speed. This paper presents the influence of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation process. Three bits were used simultaneously on Indiana limestone while the bit tip angle was varied from 60° to 90°. Bit spacing was varied from 2.54 cm (1 in.) to 5.08 cm (2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dust generated during the course of the experiments was analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism by continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation.

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the third most plentiful element in seawater. It is found in more than sixty minerals and in brines and seawater as a magnesium salt. One of the more important magnesium minerals is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3, with a theoretical maximum magnesia, MgO, content of 47.6%; this carbonate form represents the world's largest source of magnesia. The next most used sources for magnesia are magnesia-rich brines and seawater, where it occurs as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. Other commercially important magnesium-bearing minerals are dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, which serves the aggregate industry as well as the chemical industry; brucite, Mg(OH)2, which is used in the production of both caustic and sintered magnesia; olivine, ([MgFe]2-SiO2), which serves the refractory and heat storage industries; talc, (H2Mg3(SiO3)4), which serves several industries as a filler and as an ingredient in cosmetics; and serpentine, (H4Mg3SiO9). All these minerals are of commercial value because of the desirable characteristics given to them by magnesia and by its placement in the crystal structure. These minerals are the starting raw materials for a wide range of products. These include the production of magnesium metal, and several grades of magnesia used for the production of both sintered magnesia for refractory manufacture and lighter fired caustic magnesia, the latter is used in fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, chemicals, in the treatment of waste water including pH control, and in the removal of sulfur compounds from exhaust stacks. Magnesite is one of several major minerals possessing a dual character, i.e., non-metallic industrial mineral because of its principal end use as a calcined/dead burned raw material in non-metallic end products and magnesium metal. A large percentage of the magnesia used to produce magnesium metal comes from seawater1 brines. The total primary metal production worldwide is about 350 ktpy. This report reviews magnesite solely as an industrial non- metallic raw material. Magnesite for most refractory purposes must have a content of sintered magnesia above 85%, with a preference for those sources that have the potential for 90 to 98% magnesia values. Dolomite, used in large tonnages because of its physical properties in the construction industry, also has a use in the chemical and the refractory industry. In its calcined form, dolomite is used as a slag addition in the making of steel, and it is used in a high-purity calcine to precipitate magnesium hydroxide from brines or seawater. The precipitated magnesium hydroxide is intermediate for the production of deadburned clinker for refractories and the production of magnesium metal. In many cases the high-purity magnesium hydroxide obtained by precipitation with calcined dolomite, or in some cases limestone, has supplanted much of the world's production of magnesia from the natural mineral magnesite. This is especially true of the United States and in major industrialized areas of Europe and Japan. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for its magnesia content is magnesite (MgCO3), one of the calcite group of rhombohedra1 carbonates, which includes calcite (CaCO3), siderite (Fe2CO3), and rhodocrosite (MnCO3), among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence magnesite and siderite form a complete series, of which the mineral breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well known end member. The radii of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC03-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but it occurs when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of this relationship is that calcite and dolomite are commonly found intermixed with magnesite. They occur, commonly, as identifiable crystal entities, which can be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by benefication techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is found occasionally as transparent crystals resembling calcite. Magnesite principally contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and the silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Although the genesis of natural magnesite deposits can be complex, it is distinguished in nature in two distinct physical forms, namely crystalline, (with a wide range of visible crystal sizes) and cryptocrystalline, sometimes referred to as amorphous, where the crystal size is not detectable to the eye and will range from 1 to 10 pm. The two types not only differ in crystal structure but in the sizes of the deposits and in modes of formations. The crystalline form has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color range is from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a significant indicator of purity but in a given deposit an experienced person can often roughly grade the magnesite by observing color and crystallinity. Macrocrystalline deposits occur in relatively few, but generally large, deposits on the order of several million tons. The ore shows a marble-like crystal structure and belongs to the sedimentary or metasomatic groups of origin. The cryptocrystalline variety of magnesite frequently occurs in many small deposits, although there are exceptions. Cryptocrystalline magnesite is typically massive with no cleavage and is sometimes descriptively called bone magnesite. The fracture is usually conchoidal, with a hardness of 3.5 to 5.0. The color is mainly white, but it can have tints of yellow, orange, or buff. Accessory silaceous minerals such as serpentine, quartz, or chalcedony are usually present. Calcium minerals are normally absent or in low concentration, this contrasting with the macrocrystalline form where calcium minerals are almost invariably present and some- times in high concentration. "INTRODUCTION Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (Anadarko) owns a region of oil shale properties acquired as part of the original Union Pacific Land Grant of the 1800’s in southern Wyoming. These holdings are greater than 2 million acres and occur throughout the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. One area was prioritized for further study by Anadarko Minerals called the Kinney Rim in the Washakie Basin due to low environmental impact, proximity to infrastructure, high ore grade, and low mining cost. The area is a low-overburden oil shale resource that can be developed using surface mining methods, processed by conventional surface retort, and placing waste rock disposal back on the bench for a design capacity of 10,000 barrel per day. The purpose of this papers is to present the results of environmental analysis and timeline, the mine plan, and surface ore processing to offer a resource-ready energy source.Mineral rights for the Kinney Rim area are owned by Anadarko, the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the State of Wyoming. Mining of oil shale for this study targets Anadarko owned mineral resources.GEOLOGY The study area is in the Green River and Washakie Basins in western Wyoming. The host geologic member is the Laney Oil Shale. Mining of molybdenum at Questa, New Mexico has been accomplished by block cave methods since August, 1983. As caving progresses, a periodic geologic evaluation is made of the rock-types present in finger raises on the Grizzly Level of the mine. The production maturity of the cave can be monitored by relating this data to geologic cross-sections through the ore body. The draw point mapping program is a simple and effective tool that is used in making draw control decisions at Questa.

Comments The venerable straight-line equation Y = Bx + A is again being rediscovered, but this time by economists, mining engineers and geologists. Two economists, William Sharpe and Harry Markowitz, from the University of Chicago and Stanford University, respectively, won the 1990 Noble Prize in economics by showing that the price of individual stocks can be related to the Dow Jones industrial average (DJIA) using the straight-line equation. According to Bill Chidester, Investment Analyst, Scientific Investment, Sharpe and Markowitz strongly emphasized the role of the beta (B) value while considering the alpha (A) value to be "pretty unimportant." Chidester claims that alpha is the "mystery" value that causes individual stocks to behave independently of popular stock-market indices, such as the DJIA. For many years, mining engineers and geologists have routinely called alpha the "nugget" or surprise element in geostatistical analyses in which a designated distance (x-axis) is related to the variance of the grade (y-axis). Because the influence of the independent variable (distance) over the dependent variable (grade variance) is ideal when alpha is equal to zero, any increase in alpha represents a loosening of influence or control within the relationship. This can be good news or bad news - good news if you are an economist sorting out off-trend stocks and bad news if you are a mining engineer trying to predict sulfur in a coal seam. With many mining trends, such as those involving the relationship of distance to the variance of grade, a mathematical relationship can be formed. In geostatistical analysis, the point where a mathematical trend ends is known as the sill. If the difference between the variance of grade at the sill and at alpha can be determined, then an estimate of the relative control for a given distance can be obtained by comparing the sill value to alpha. The extent to which alpha approaches the value of the sill provides an indication of independence or loss of trend. The alpha concept may find application with distance, time or fluid problems. The point of change can be either a change in trend or the trend limit. However, even without a clearly defined point of change or trend limit, increasing alpha values always infer loss of trend. Alpha analysis should be regarded as a valuable tool when sorting out many sets of mining data. The application of this user-friendly concept to reserves, material transport, fluid flow and other areas has been, and will continue to be, the basis of many important past and future developments in mining and geology.

Inflation and increasingly complex tax laws in the United States combined with rising national ism overseas have made the structuring of viable financing plans which meet the requirements of the various parties involved equally important in determining project success as the design of an efficient mining plan or selection of the optimal size equipment. Whereas the use of computerized analysis to design and evaluate the technical parameters of resource ventures is well accepted, computerized evaluation of the investment criteria (qualitative and quantitative) of the various parties to the project (mining firm, financial institution, product buyer, host government, etc.) is a more recent application which can make a material impact in strengthening project economics. By identifying the objectives of the parties and critically evaluating and testing them with the technical and economic/financial constraints on the project the sponsors can design a financial structure tailored to the attributes of the deposit. A myriad of new financial techniques have evolved for financing natural resource ventures, from "Commodity-backed bonds" to tax based limited partner- ships, but in every case the structure of the financing mechanism depends on carefully matching the parameters of the financial structure with the economic characteristics of the project and the objectives of its sponsors. This presentation outlines a methodlogy for computer based project evaluation in the design and structuring of stronger financial plans for natural resource ventures.

The problem of long-term production scheduling in an underground coal mine is approached through the concepts of sequencing theory. Based on a typical layout of mining sections, the principles for the approach are: 1. The definition of mining sections as jobs, and mining methods as machines. 2. The reduction of the overall mining activity to the general problem of nonpreemptive scheduling of precedence related jobs on parallel machines. 3. The simplification of the layout to a general type directed network with the nodes representing jobs and the arcs representing precedence relations. 4. The determination of a feasible and near-optimal job schedule given the objective of maximizing the total net present value of the jobs. A general scheduling heuristic is being developed for implementation on an IBM personal computer (PC) as part of an interactive computer system for long-term production planning.

Introduction The Bulk Handling Technology has already started its transformation to the Industry 4.0. Having some of the harshest working and environmental conditions of the industry, the possibility of remote analysis and maintenance of the components seems a perfect target to focus on. The most important and expensive tools have been adapted to the digital era during last years, from remotely controlled haul trucks to monitored conveyor belts. However, these big parts of the installations rely in smaller parts that have been left aside for a while, mainly due to the difficulty to adapt them to IoT (Internet of Things). The paradigmatic example is the lack of monitored rollers whereas all the other components of the conveyor belt installations (the belt itself, motors, drums etc.) were monitored some time ago. The main problem is that a failure of a single roller can cause the stop of the whole conveyor, due to the possible damages to the belt, thus the implementation of an integral monitoring system of all the components of the conveyor is a must. The R&D Department of ULMA Conveyor Components, has been working since early 2012 on the development of Monitored Rollers, facing all the problems until its final installation in very different demanding conveyors, from the Australian extreme heat to the freezing cold Norway. All the tests done under actual working conditions, in real installations, have given a valuable knowledge in the identification of problems, their solution and the final advantages of a roller monitoring system. Background and Current State The malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can suppose the standstill of the whole installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures like the rip of the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation where a continuous supply of material is necessary, an unexpected stop of one hour could entail huge economical losses. What’s more, many conveyor belts are several kilometers long or the access to some parts of them is very complicated. Due to these difficulties the inspection and maintenance operations can become expensive and hard going, with staff going over the whole area checking the correct condition of the conveyor and rollers, which means a dangerous activity. As in many other industry products, the condition of rollers can be recognized measuring key parameters like the temperature of the bearings, the vibration level etc. The traditional way is to use the characteristic noise of a failing bearing, but this method usually implies to change several rollers because the maintenance team is not able to identify a single source of the noise. In recent years different attempts to measure the temperature of the bearings have been made, but the result is not accurate enough due to the proximity of the rollers in the idlers

This study was initiated by the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to develop guidelines for determining the maximum economic recovery of resources in coal mines. The work was in response to a requirement in the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 and Federal regulations. The intent was to address the economic rainability of small, irregular reserves in existing longwall mines. In particular, there was a need to determine if room- and-pillar mining using a continuous miner (CM) was economically sound or whether unconventional (short or odd-shaped) longwalls could be used to recover small coal reserves economically. Small reserves, called "widgets " are left in longwall mines on one side of the mains near outcrops and adverse geological conditions or near any other location where reserve geometry does not lend itself to mining with a rectangular longwall panel. The work included the analysis of the geologic, geotechnical and economic factors that influence the recovery of small coal reserves; the analysis of historic changes in supply, demand and coal prices; the development of typical cost models for room-and-pillar and longwall mines; and the development of a practical methodology for determining maximum economic recovery. The methodology included an evaluation of the ratio of coal mined during longwall mining to that mined for development (LDR), as well as costs of maintaining coal quality depending on market conditions. The LDR is a good indicator of mine efficiency and overall coal recovery in modern longwall mines and, thus, is used to evaluate the increased costs associated with adding new development sections for extraction of small reserves. The study examines the economic feasibility of using unconventional longwalls for the recovery of medium-sized reserves, depending on site-specific geologic and geometric conditions.

The use of explosives in deep rock mining carries conventional blasting technology into a relatively new and unexplored realm. Although bill ions of pounds of explosives are used fairly routinely in mining, quarrying, and construction, almost all of these uses are surface blasting. Most of the in sib processes that are proposed for recovery of mineral or energy resources require the creation of high permeability to provide well defined flow paths in the resource bed. At present there is very little information on the fracturing produced by explosives deep in the earth, and the technology for using explosives in deep rock mining is just evolving. A qualitative understanding of the applicable mechanisms in deep rock fracture leads to some key parameters in the selection of explosives for deep rock mining. The selection and characterization process involves a careful analysis of the field environment and the establishment of tests to determine candidate explosives response to planned and accidental stimuli. The details of this selection and characterization process are given for a few candidate explosives. The use of explosives in deep rock mining must be considered as one of the possible tools for recovery of yet untrapped energy and mineral resources. A basic understanding of explosive deep rock fracture will allow optimum selection of explosive processes or other more appropriate methods for recovery of energy or minerals from a particular resource area. The results of some experimental studies are discussed.

Sphalerite is commonly floated in an alkaline environment and under such conditions the overall activation mechanism is obscured by the hydrolysis of Cu2+ and precipitation of Cu(OH)2. Electrokinetic and kinetic flotation tests show that the activation of sphalerite is a two-stage process; the activation products formed on the surface of sphalerite in near neutral and in alkaline solutions in the first rapid activation stage are "flotation-inactive". These layers, when formed in an alkaline solution, are unstable and are transformed into the "flotation-active" form in the second stage. However, the surface layers formed during activation in alkaline environment by copper in the presence of lead ions are very stable and even after a long conditioning time the flotation rate is not improved. Consequently, while both Cu2+ and Pb2+ activate sphalerite flotation, quite unpredictable effects may result when both are present in the solution.

El Teniente Mine of Codelco-Chile, located at Los Andes Range of Mountains, 90 kilometers South far from Santiago, the capital city, has been exploited for more than 90 years, with over 1000 million tonnes of copper ore extraction. No doubt, this particular record, has been possible to achieve due to an efficient combination of human and technological efforts in the exploitation of one of the biggest ore deposits of the world. Throughout times, the exploitation has evolved from a mainly manual one to a highly mechanized exploitation. Notwithstanding, different and several geomechanical problems that occurred in one of its areas, increased the risks to personnel that should normally operate large equipments in its working face. This last condition, forced El Teniente mine to design and develop systems and technologies that would allow the use of tele-operated LHD, picking hammers and drilling equipment (jumbos) from a safe zone. Currently, El Teniente Mine is using in its extractive works equipment such as LHD, picking hammers, and drilling Jumbos, that can be manually or teleoperated commanded from a Central Control Room located one kilometer away from the production area. In general, a new technological era has been opened in the mining exploitation at El Teniente: the exploitation era with telecommanded robots.

Geological and hydrological conditions in the strata overlying the Salado Formation vary considerably in the Carlsbad, NM, area. The first four shafts sunk at International Minerals and Chemical Corp. (IMC) property have been located in competent and essentially dry conditions, while other shafts on adjacent properties have had such adverse conditions that ground freezing has been chosen as the water and ground control technique for shaft sinking. At the location of the IMC No. 5 shaft there has been extensive erosion and salt dissolution in the Rustler Formation, leading to collapse of some zones of the strata. Both ground freezing and pregrouting were considered as alternative methods of stabilizing the extremely poor ground conditions and controlling the potentially very heavy water inflows. It was decided that pregrouting the shaft was feasible and would offer substantial cost and time saving over a ground freezing technique. This paper describes the pregrouting techniques used and illustrates the requirement for flexibility in a grouting program so that it can be modified to reflect any new or additional information obtained during the progress of the grouting.

In recent years, equipment manufacturers have been busy developing remote control systems to catch up with the sophistication and efficiency of continuous miners. Now the tables are turned, and manufacturers are undertaking the new challenge of upgrading, refining and equipping continuous miners to take full advantage of the capabilities made possible by modern, successful remote control systems. Because the operator can safely advance the miner farther without pulling out for roof bolting, continuous miners now need to be equipped with means of complying with correct face ventilation, dust suppression, methane detection, diffusion and improved lighting. Some of the exciting possibilities being developed to catch up with remote control include feedback controls using laser beams as datum points, coal sensing devices with feedback signals to show the operator what the machine is doing, show where it is relative to the coal seam, how hard it is working, and more sophisticated use of cyclic control. Mining machinery manufacturers have accepted the new challenges, and faster, safer mining procedures are already in sight.

During the last few years there has been a rapid increase in the development of the community or junior college throughout the United States, Some factors behind this development include the need for more college facilities to service the growing number of high school graduates, the desire of the public to provide some post high school education at reasonable costs, and the need to provide post high school educational opportunities not now provided by most of the universities and colleges. Many of the new community colleges provide at least three educational services including local opportunity to provide the first two years of a four year college program, two year technical-vocational programs of a terminal nature, and adult educational opportunities. The community college has the advantage of not being saddled with years of academic tradition which prevent it from changing to suit the educational needs of the community It serves. The flexibility of the community college in developing new programs, particularly in the technical areas, is going to provide industry with many of the badly needed technicians it is now unable to secure.

Stope width was controlled around 3.5 feet for the narrow high grade vein system at Hollister Gold Mine. Without top access, backfill material was pumped from bottom access up into stope through a series of pipes after ore had been slushed out in each mining cycle. Backfill material was changed from one layer of low strength concrete plus one layer of high strength concrete cap to one layer of low strength cellular concrete plus one layer of high strength concrete cap. Backfill cost was cut down to 30 percent during this process. To reduce the steel concrete pipe set up and tear down time which was about 2 to 3 shifts in each mining cycle, steel pipes were left in man-way between mining cycles. Cellular concrete was firstly introduced into backfilling stopes at Hollister mine in Nevada Mining. This process including concrete pump selection, pumping pipe selection, material mixing, material mechanics and quality control were fully covered in this paper. CUT AND FILL MINING CYCLE The most flexible mining method, cut and fill (Figure 1), was used to mine the high grade, narrow steep vein system on this Northern Nevada property which is located eighty miles north east of Winnemucca. Without top access, stopes were accessed through two man-ways on each end, in which people travel ladders and material transport slides were set up (Figure 2). Each mining cycle was called a cut, from 6 to 8 feet high. Overhand sequence was used. Mining cycle started with drill and blast the middle portion of the stope, then expanded towards both ends. Broken ore was slushed into mill hole located at middle of the stope and then mucked out through bottom access into main haulage. Stope length was about 300 feet, which was restricted by slushing distance. Timber man-ways and mill hole would be raised and established for backfill and ready for the next mining cycle.

The Chino open pit mine, concentrator, and smelter are located in Grant county in Southwestern New Mexico. Chino Mines Company is a partnership, two- thirds owned and operated by Kennecott Santa Fe Corp., and one third owned by MC Minerals Corp. (Mitsubishi) of Japan. The concentrator, with a design capacity of 37,000 tons of copper-molybdenite ore per day, was commissioned in July, 1982. Further design modifications have resulted in an increase in throughput capacity to 42,000 tpd

4.1 – DEFINITIONS 4.1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS, ORES AND NONMETALLIC MINERALS F. N. EARLL A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound. Most minerals are distinctly crystalline in habit, and many commonly occur in well-formed crystals or crystalline aggregates, but a few species are characteristically amorphous or noncrystalline. Nearly 2,000 mineral species are now recognized but, perhaps fortun¬ately, a rather large proportion are rarely encountered. Even so, the application of modern mineral-detection and identification techniques reveals the presence of surprising numbers of mineral species, even in deposits of outwardly simple mineralogy. A rock is an aggregate of grains or crystals of one or more minerals. Some rocks are essentially monomineralic. Thus, limestone consists largely of the mineral calcite, and many sandstones are dominantly quartz. Most rock varieties, however, contain a number of mineral species, and their classification or identification depends upon the minerals present, their relative abundance, and such factors as rock tex¬ture and origin. Ore is defined as an accumulation or deposit of one or more minerals that can be exploited at a profit. The profit criterion commonly is taken somewhat liberally, however, for, although always present, the specific mineral content that constitutes a viable product is transitory. The term ore, usually, but no longer consistently, is restricted to the description of mineral deposits that are of value for their metal content. Nonmetallic deposits, although similar to metallic ores in many respects, generally are valued for the minerals or compounds present, as with rock salt (halite), rather than for individual contained elements, though such minerals as elemental sulfur are of much value. 4.1.2-ROCK TYPES F. N. EARLL Rocks arc grouped tinder three broad headings: (1) igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of magma; (2) sedimentary rocks formed by surface processes of weathering and deposition; and (3) metamorphic rocks, which may have been derived from either of the foregoing, but have undergone important physical and/or chemical changes through the application of heat or pressure, or both. The three groups can he further subdivided for convenient reference. Thus, igneous rocks are described as being abyssal or plutonic if formed at great depth, hypabyssal if formed at intermediate depth, and extrusive or effusive if formed at or on the earth's surface. The sedimentary rock group is similarly subdivided into clastic sediments and chemical precipitates. The clastic sediments form by deposition of preexisting minerals that were released from their place of origin by weathering and were transported to their point of deposition as discrete grains
