Many Third World African countries are well-endowed with minerals - especially gold and diamonds - while only a few have important base metal deposits. For decades since colonial rule, political and economic conditions discouraged interest by Western capital. Influence from Soviet Bloc countries, however, has declined with the move toward multi-party rule. And the left wing orientation, once widely favored by Third World African countries, has almost disappeared. With International Monetary Fund (IMF) encouragement, these Third World African countries now encourage representational government and solicit western finance to expand their industries. Mining is especially encouraged. The North American mining industry is following the same trail as other capital intensive industries and looking abroad for opportunities. The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada released figures that show exploration expenditures in that country were halved between 1987 and 1990. Figures for the United States are not so easily found but every indication points to a downward trend. While total annual expenditures on US exploration by corporations as a group are either declining or remaining constant, expenditures away from North America is increasing. Gold exploration expenditures in 1991 by the major companies tracked by Minerals Economics Group were less in the United States than for Latin America and the Southwest Pacific combined. The same study showed as much was spent in the Republic of South Africa and "Other" areas combined as in the United States. Expenditures by major corporations in these "Other" areas amount to only 5.2% of their total budget. Third World Africa is a major component of these "Other" areas.

The marine geologist and coastal engineer have at their disposal a wide variety of geophysical tools with which to investi¬gate sea floor topography and structure. Such devices include towed magnetometers, shipboard gravimeters and a variety of acoustical systems for recording the relief of the sea floor and buried structural features. The versatility of this latter group of systems lends itself to a variety of applications essential to those projects where excava¬tion of the sea floor is required. This paper describes the use of several acoustic devices and their Limitations and presents a case history in which a rapid survey from a small vessel provided detailed information critical to the planning stage of a specific coastal project. In this discussion, shallow water is defined as depths less than 150 feet. At present, this limit includes the maximum depth of economic dredging and most other offshore activities. To be sure, the maximum depth at which routine useful work can be accomplished is rapidly increasing, but the majority of current marine activities are located in water depths here defined as shallow.

"The deposits of the east end of the Mesabi Range cover very large areas, and consist of the same taconite that produces the hematite of the central and western Mesabi. It is not deeply covered with drift, but outcrops boldly in large masses. It is not concentrated locally into enriched bodies separated by leaner areas, but is all a fairly uniform, hard, banded, unaltered chert, carrying about 25 to 30 per cent iron as magnetite.The Mesabi Iron Company, organized by Hayden, Stone & Co., and under the direction of D. C. Jackling, has taken over these deposits and is building a Concentrating plant at the new town of Babbitt, about fourteen miles east of Mesaba, Minn. This plant is to have a capacity of 2,000 to 3,000 tons per day, and is based on the application to this low grade material of the methods which have made the so-called porphyry copper properties so successful.In 1916, an experimental mill was built in Duluth; containing full sized machinery and capable of handling from 100 to 200 tons daily. A considerable tonnage of material was concentrated here during 1916, 1917 and 1918. The work showed that the resulting product could be varied, almost at will, between 60 per cent and 70 per cent iron and .006 per cent to .030 per' cent phosphorus, and that this could be made on a large scale well within the limits of cost set by iron trade conditions. A small special cargo was sent down the lakes, late in 1918, assaying 63.27 per cent iron (natural and dry) and .008 per cent phosphorus; but it is assumed that large scale shipments will normally be of a Bessemer' grade carrying about 63 per cent iron and .020 per cent to .030 per cent phosphorus. This material is a sinter, carrying only traces of sulphur and titanium, with silica between 6 per cent and 10 , per cent, and alumina, lime, magnesia, and manganese, each below 1 per cent. Some of the iron in this sinter is hematite and some is magnetite, the percentages varying according to the treatment given on the sintering machine. Like the analyses, this hematite percentage is within reasonable control. Sinter made from finely ground magnetite has much the structure of coke, being firm yet porous, and gives good account of itself in the blast furnace."

Planning the development of the Quartz Hill molybdenum open pit mine in Southeast Alaska required a number of special considerations. Located in mountainous glaciated terrain, about 3.8 m (150 in.) of annual precipitation (with annual snowfall over 10.2 m (400 :in.) was a primary consideration. Mine planning included muskeg and snow removal, avalanche control, clearing timber, water quality control, dust control, seismicity, mine schedule, work force and reclamation. Quartz Hill is in an environmentally sensitive area which has required extensive environmental baseline data collection, four Environmental Impact statements (EIS) and a large number of permits.

The process of selecting a building site for a major structure is a complex procedure involving the consideration of a multitude of factors. The approximate geographic location for a structure is usually fixed by its intended function, though often there may be several site alternatives. Socio-economic, logistic, marketing and political factors are the primary site determinants. Also critical in site planning, however, are the environmental factors, both natural and man-made. These factors will influence the precise siting location within the limits allowed by the primary determinants and will dictate some of the basic design criteria. This paper discusses environmental factors, principally those which are natural conditions, that must be analyzed for five different groups of structures. The importance of thorough site environmental analysis based upon the principles of applied earth science is described. Significant elements to be considered in an appraisal of the geology, hydrology, seismology and meteorology are outlined.

Two methods used to measure the exposure of mine workers to diesel exhaust particulate were compared. One method was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota's Particle Technology Laboratory. The method which was originally developed for use in coal mines is a size selective sampling technique. The other method uses an “ashing" approach to assess the exposure to diesel particulate. This second method is based on the principles of sampling according to the ACGIH respirable dust sampling criteria and the use of a silver membrane filter as collection substrate. Because a silver membrane filter is used, both respirable combustible dust (diesel particulate) and respirable silica can be measured from one sample. The comparison study took place in a Canadian lead-zinc mine during tests which were primarily designed to evaluate the gaseous and particulate emissions characteristics of new diesel engine technology. The study has shown that under the test conditions encountered, some differences were observed between the results as obtained by the two methods. These differences seem to depend on the characteristics of the respirable dust found in the work- place, i.e., size and composition. The impact, on sampling and analysis of diesel particulate, of the proposed guideline (ACGIH) for a TLV® of 0.15 mq/m3 is discussed briefly.

In the event of fire underground, it is essential that all miners be warned as quickly as possible. With mine air, rapidly depleted of oxygen and contaminated with smoke and toxic fire gases, any delay in the warning signal could have disastrous consequences. Unfortunately, present mine, fire warning systems, such as stench, audible or visual alarms, telephones, and messengers, are often slow, unreliable, and limited in coverage.

Hargett Dear Dr. Hanna: As discussed in our phone conversation, we are enclosing a suggested revision to the paper, "Application of Bentonitic Clays in Suspension Fertilizer Formulations," published in MINERAL & METALLURGICAL PROCESSING, May 1990. The revision will replace the second paragraph in the article. The reason for the revision is that suspensions have decreased in market share since 1984 and at present comprise an estimated 25% to 30% of fluid mixtures. This represents 6% to 7% of all fluids and only 2% to 3% percent of all fertilizers. Based on national surveys conducted by the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO), suspensions comprised an estimated 25% of all fluid mixtures in 1974, 33% in 1976, 35% in 1980, 40% in 1984, and 36% in 1988. Revision to "Application of Bentonitic Clays in Suspension Fertilizer Formulations." Suspension fertilizers are an important segment of the fertilizer industry in the United States. Suspensions allow higher concentrations of nutrients (N, P2O5, K2O) than clear liquid solution fertilizers. K20 content of solutions is limited to about 10%, while suspensions can contain more than 30% K2O. Suspensions can tolerate greater variations in temperature than solutions. In suspensions, if crystallization occurs, the crystals can remain suspended in a clay jell instead of settling as they would in solutions. Solubility is not a limiting factor in suspensions, since complete solubility of phosphate is not required. This allows a wider range of phosphate materials to be used. Also, materials commonly used in formulating suspensions are less expensive and more widely available than those for clear liquids (Getsiner et al., 1984).

Not too long ago a mill superintendent, when asked where his tailings were being disposed, could simply shrug his shoulders and point to the open end of the thickener discharge pipe. This “out of sight, out of mind” approach to tailings disposal is a practice of the past. Today there are very few planned hardrock or energy-related mining facilities where tailings disposal has not been identified as the major area of impact and controversy. In fact, development of some ore bodies has been stymied altogether by lack of suitable sites or methods for tailings disposal. The bottom- Iine result is that tailings disposal often controls the permitting lead time and has a significant influence on construction cost (up to 2070 in some cases) of new minemill complexes. The following article, the first in a series of three, explores technical background and historical perspectives on siting and design of tailings impoundment facilities.

Spinel ferrites, like NiFe2-2x Znx Ti4 O4 Fe CO1.5 Ge0.5 Tix O4, Ga1-x Fex Ni CO O4, Nil-x Fex Mn2 O4 have been prepared using the respective metal oxides in Stoichiometric quantities, by the ceramic method. The oxides were homogenized in acetone medium, pelletifed by using poly vinyl acetate as the binder. They were fired at 1000°C for 100 hours for compound formation. Chalcogenide spinels such as Zn1-x Cux Cr2 Se4 where 0=x=l and Cu1-x Fex Cr2 Se4 where 0=x=0.3 have been prepared by using 99.99% pure elements and then fired at 1000°C in quartz ampoules under vacuum conditions. X-ray diffraction studies of these compounds indicated a single cubic spinel phase. DC resistivity studies of the compounds were taken between 300-700K using LCR bridge by two probe technique. Thermo-electric power measurements were taken between 300-500K for all the compounds. Initial susceptibility studies have been carried out using a low field (0.506) and from which the nature of magnetic dimains and Curie temperatures were determined. Magnetic hysteresis measurements were carried out at 300K and at 80K, using alternating current hysteresis loop tracer, at 2K02 field. Mossbauer spectral measurements were carried out using Co57 source embedded in a copper matrix and an absorber containing 0.3 mg/cm2 of the sample. The spectra has been fitted by Mossfit Program. The catalytic effect of the spinel ferrites NiFe2-2x Znx Tix O4 where 0=x=1 has been studied by using the model reaction of decomposition of H2O2 at temperatures from 40°C to 70°C. It was found that the spinel oxides were found to possess poor catalytic activity.

Recent developments in expanded PTFE membrane filter cloths offer high flow rates and sub-micron particle removal. These high strength, industrial grade filter cloths can be tailored for tubular filters, leaf filters and rotary vacuum drums. Filtration techniques using tubular filters make possible filtration of difficult slurries with the elimination/reduction of filter aids and chemical additives. This paper describes principles of surface filtration, applying the membrane filter cloth and comparisons to gravity separators. Benefits to the mining industry include clear effluent, enhanced solids recovery and accelerated cost payback.

Maintenance of a constant load setting throughout longwall support units and selection of the proper initial bearing capacity depending on the type of roof strata are the basic factors that ensure good performance of roof support in a longwall. These requirements can only be met by hydraulic support. The greatest advantage of hydraulic support is achieved when uniform pressure is imposed on the roof throughout the length of the longwall. Such support, however, is provided only if each of the support units acts with the same force against the roof, i.e., has the same setting load. In such cases, the roof behaves like a uniform plate without bending and shearing stresses, thereby ensuring an undisturbed structure. Without a positive set value system, achieving an equal setting load for all units of the longwall support is impossible. Due to alterations of the feed line pressure of support units as well as some reasons related to man's psychology, operators extend the height at different setting loads. This produces nonuniform roof stress, and disturbs the structure. Consequently, the roof usually cracks. The author has developed a positive set value system, which is described in this Technical Note. Selection of the setting load Two pressure values in the feed lines are usually applied in longwall hydraulic systems. Lightweight support is fed by 25 MPa (250 bar) liquid, while heavy duty units receive a nominal pressure of 31.5 MPa (315 bar). Such pressure is required not only for the props but also to power the adjust¬ment jacks and the advancing ram. If the feed pressure is too low, there will be difficulty in shifting the unit despite the inversion system of the advancing rams. On the other hand, for many roof types, the feed pressure often appears to be too high when applied as the setting load pressure. An excessive setting load acts too strongly against the roof, crushing weak strata close to the roof. The author has recognized a case where an excessive setting load destroyed not only the nearby roof strata but also the strata above a 2-m (6.6-ft) sandstone layer. In addition, an excessive setting load relieves the side¬walls, increasing the resistance when using cutting machines. As a result, the yield of coarse coal is diminished, and increased fines dominate in the final product, lowering its economic value. As indicated, selection of the proper setting load, depend¬ing on the mining and geological conditions of the extracted seam, is extremely important. In some mines, measures applied to prevent disturbances include reduction of the feed line pressure by adjusting the feed pump valve. The disadvantage accompanying reduced feed line pressure is more difficult operation in advancing the ram. Due to the reduced feed line pressure, the force of the advancing ram is much lower than the designed value. Other designs suggest using a third feed line. However, installation of supplementary valves on the support units is required, a time-consuming and expensive procedure. The disadvantages of the powered supports are eliminated by a system designed by the author. So far, such a method of setting load control has not been used in any type of support. Setting load control unit The designed positive valve set for prop loading and the setting load control correspond to existing control systems for hydraulic powered support. The layout of the unit connected to the hydraulic prop control is presented in Fig. 1. The unit is marked LIDS. It incorporates three valves that may operate separately or connected. Valve A automatically opens and closes with liquid flow in the prop feed circuit. The valve is opened when the canopy touches the roof and closed when the support unit is withdrawn. Valve B serves as the setting load control. Valve C automatically opens and closes the flow in the line connecting the under-piston space of E to the prop F with the separator G. The valve block of each support prop is marked BZ. The UDS unit is connected by the hydraulic lines to the F prop control circuit. A valve is connected by H to pressure line J and by K to the G separator. In the UDS-3 version, line L is connected to M, linking the over-piston space of F prop with the G separator. Valve B is linked with valve A by a connector; it is also connected to the under-piston space E of prop F by line P. Valve C is fixed between lines K and P, connecting space E of prop F with the separator G. When setting the support, the liquid flows from line J through separator G, the BZ valve, and valve C to the space E of prop F. When reaching the roof with the canopy, valve A is opened and C closes. In this way it is impossible for the operator to cause the liquid pressure in space E of prop F to reach the level of line J. The prop pressure is set by valve B of the UDS unit. When withdrawing the support, valve C is automatically opened and A closed. Three UDS units have been fabricated and are designated

Microprocessor technology has revolutionized the business community by placing tremendous computing power in the hands of the end-user for a very inexpensive price tag. The range of applications covers process control, to office automation, to personal computing capabilities. With the influx of this new technology, which these systems have to offer, also comes some unique operational and control considerations. But before we address these items, let us lay a foundation of common terms to be used throughout this presentation. Due to the rapid advances in microprocessor technology, where a new generation of computers is announced every two or three years, it becomes difficult to define a microprocessor system and have it valid for an extended period of time! Therefore, for this presentation, we will be dealing with a subset of microprocessors called Personal Computers or PC's. At the heart of a PC is a Central Processing Unit or CPU. The CPU performs the actual program and command execution. The programs dealing with driving the various peripheral equipment is referred to as the Operating System (for example: DOS : Disk Operating System, CP/M - Control Program/Microcomputers, etc.). The CPU is normally housed in an enclosure which contains power regulators, peripheral equipment interfacing 'cards', and expansion 'slots' to enlarge the capabilities of the PC system.

Introduction Treatment of ores to recover metal and mineral values results in waste materials usually in the form of dilute slurries. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated a technique for dewatering phosphatic clay waste by flocculating with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting floes on a static screen and/or trommel screen (Schemer et al., 1985). In the investigation, it was determined that PEO was far superior to polyacrylamide polymers for this type of dewatering. This paper discusses reasons for this superior performance. Comparison of PEO with polyacrylamides Dewatering experiments were conducted by adding PEO solution from a burette to a stirred clay slurry. The dewatering endpoint was characterized by rotation of the floc mass as a unit, a clear supernate, a maximum floc size, and a minimum floc volume. Additional water was removed from the floes by hand squeezing (Schemer et al., 1985). The clays investigated were sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum exchanged montmorillonite and attapulgite. Nine commercially available (Superfloc) polyacrylamides were compared with PEO at two polymer concentrations. Results are summarized in Table 1. The solids content of the dewatered clays ranged between 24% and 33% and was highest for PEO-treated material. These results and the data in Table 1 indicate that PEO is superior to polyacrylamide in terms of polymer dosage required. Superflocs 16 through 128, like PEO, are nonionic and should give similar results to those for PEO if the flocculation mechanism is the same for both type polymers. Superflocs 204 through 214 are anionic with increasing anionic character from 204 to 214. Generally, the anionic polymers gave the best results for the polyacrylamides tested, but in terms of dosage they were not as good as PEO. Correlation between flocculation and dewaterability of waste slurries The overall mechanism for mechanically induced clay dewatering is not completely known, but certain observations can be made. For instance, when a polymer is adsorbed on a clay such as montmorillonite, the polymer desorbs interlayer water. Polymer adsorption is driven by favorable entropy changes associated with this water desorption. It is also known that the -CH2-CH2- links of the PEO chain are sufficiently hydrophobic to lead to physical adsorption of the polymer (Theng, 1979). For montmorillonite slurries, the sheet-like fundamental particles, called tactoids, consist of a small, variable number of aluminosilicate layers together with interlayer water and exchange ions. The flocculation process consists of adsorption of polymer on the tactoid. Loops and tails of polymer that extend into solution then adsorb on another tactoid, forming a bridge. Mechanical action, induced by hand squeezing or in a trammel, joins the bridged tactoids face-to-face and edge-to-edge to form regions of high density. Similar orientation effects are observed for the needle-like attapulgite crystals (Schemer et al., 1985). Proposed flocculation model Generally, statements concerning flocculation and dewaterability apply to both PEO and the polyacrylamides. However, PEO has additional interaction with the clay material when compared with polyacrylamides. PEO is a polymer with repeating -CH2-CH2-O- groups and interacts with montmorillonite through a water bridge whose strength is greatly influenced by the exchange ion. Unlike most ore minerals, the raw materials for lightweight-aggregate, such as clays and shales are abundant everywhere. In view of this ample choice, what are the reasons for many plant failures attributed to the raw material? How can we arrive at a proper choice of the raw material, the proper processing method for the chosen material, predict its behaviour in a plant and the properties of the final product? Determine the uniformity of the raw material and possible harmful impurities? One basic choice is sintered versus kiln-fired aggregate. It will be based on market preferences and availability of the raw material. Almost in every case a good raw material for one process is poison for the other.

The ever increasing price of bulk commodities forces buyers and sellers in world markets to take a more careful look at methods for obtain¬ing accurate accounting of commodity trans¬actions in commerce and material utilization in processes. Depending upon the application of a sampling and weighing system or the use intended, inaccuracies can result in an eco¬nomic loss of income or a loss in quality of the process. It inevitably results in a loss of control of ones costs. The accuracy of samp¬ling and weighing systems is today extremely important, as they are recognized to be the key components of the overall management system designed to provide both quantitative and qualitative control. This paper will be confined to the weighing systems only and will deal with various as¬pects of system design, calibration and opera¬tions. Special emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field.

"Nucleation and growth of copper on 316L stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate was studied in the absence and presence of chloride ions and/or organic additives (HydroStar® 4208, DXG®-F7, Cyquest® N-900) using a potentiostatic technique. The current-time data obtained at 0.16V vs. SHE was analyzed using nucleation and growth models. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of deposits produced at 300 A m-2 show that the addition of 20 mg/L chloride ions increased the size and reduced the number of copper nuclei. Potentiostatic current-time data from the electrolyte without organic additives indicate progressive nucleation with two-dimensional (2-D) growth under diffusion control. SEM images obtained confirmed progressive nucleation with 2-D growth. 20 mg/L Cl- and 2.5 mg/L organic additives did not change the nucleation and growth mechanism, however the additives increased the number and reduced the size of copper nuclei leading to more uniform coverage of the stainless steel substrate.INTRODUCTION Electrowinning of copper is an important process in the manufacture of high purity copper metal. It is approximated that 20% of the world’s refined copper is produced from acidified copper sulfate solutions by electrowinning (Schlesinger, Sole, and Davenport, 2011). In many plants, copper is electrodeposited on AISI 316L stainless steel substrates for a period of 6-7 days, after which the copper is stripped from the blanks. Even though the deposition time for a commercial copper electrowinning circuit is around one week, it is critically important to control the nucleation, growth, and nature of the initial deposit (Sun and O'Keefe, 1992). Deposit morphology and structure are influenced by the real current density at the electrode surface. The real current density across the cathode surface is made uniform by proper design of the electrowinning cell and electrodes and careful operational practice. Even with good design and control, some current maldistribution occurs. The outcome of severe current maldistribution is poor deposits that affect product quality and/or increase energy consumption. To combat current maldistribution and create a larger operating window in terms of current density, temperature, and copper concentration, small amounts of organic smoothing agents (traditionally guar products) are added to copper electrowinning electrolytes. Moreover, these additives inhibit the growth of copper dendrites, which leads to improved deposit quality by producing bright, smooth, and dense cathodes."

INTRODUCTION One of the most important tasks facing the opera¬tors of deep-level gold mines is supporting the roof strata in the immediate vicinity of the stope faces. Some of the deeper gold mines operate at depths ex¬ceeding 3.0 km; the extreme mining depths and the tabular nature of the gold-bearing reefs result in high stress concentrations at the abutments of the stope faces. These, in turn, lead to extensive fracturing of even the hardest quartzites. Although most of these fractures develop in a stable manner, there have been many instances where rock failure occurred suddenly, resulting in a considerable amount of damage to the underground workings. Such violent rock failures commonly are known as "rock bursts," and they are typical of many hard-rock mines that are operating at great depths. To safeguard mining personnel and equipment against the effects of stable and unstable rock failures, adequate support must be provided to the fractured roof as quickly and as effec¬tively as possible. Traditionally, timber props and timber packs have been utilized to provide roof support in gold mine stopes up to 1.5 m wide. Both methods of support suffer from the fundamental disadvantage of generating sup¬port only in reaction to movement of the strata. Since unrestrained strata movement often results in a break¬down of the frictional forces that preserve the stability of the intensely fractured roof strata, it is essential that stope supports have rapid load-bearing characteristics. An equally important requirement is that the roof sup¬ports be able to accommodate displacements of the rock mass. A third requirement of roof supports in gold mine stopes is that they must be able to accommodate the high rates of stope convergence typical of rock bursts. The hydraulic prop is the obvious choice for sup¬porting the stope faces in deep-level hard-rock mines. Since hydraulic props can be installed with a positive setting load, they can provide roof support that is independent of strata movement. By equipping the hydraulic props with yield valves, they meet the require¬ment of being able to accommodate rock-mass displace¬ments. However, the requirement of being able to accommodate high rates of stope convergence without overloading or damaging the rock strata was rather difficult to meet. The first introduction of hydraulic roof supports into gold mine stopes showed that conventional hy¬draulic props, such as those used in coal mines, were completely unsuitable for a number of reasons, in¬cluding: 1) Since drilling and blasting are used to break the ore in gold mine stopes, supports installed close enough to be effective are exposed to the vigor of the blast. Conventional coal-mining props suffered extensive blast damage, despite being protected by a blast barricade. 2) The environmental conditions in gold mine stopes favor corrosion. The high quartz content and the abrasiveness of the ore further aggravate the problem by damaging the protective coatings on the hydraulic surfaces. Simply changing the design of gold mine props to have the piston project from the bottom rather than from the top resulted in dramatic improvements in the service life of the props. The improvement was attributable to external water in the stope washing the fine quartz grit away from the hydraulic surfaces, rather than concentrating the particles between the cylinder and piston of the prop. 3) The most obvious deficiency of conventional coal mining props was their inability to yield rapidly enough to accommodate the high convergence rates of rock bursts without overloading the supports. As a result of the first disappointing results with hydraulic supports in narrow hard-rock stopes mined by drilling and blasting, a comprehensive research and development program was undertaken. The hydraulic props resulting from several years of research and exten¬sive field trials are described herein. To date (1978), more than 130,000 of these props have been manufac¬tured and used successfully in a number of mines and under a variety of geological conditions. Although many of the detailed specifications are directed spe¬cifically to gold mining conditions, there are a number of points that are of general importance in the design of underground support systems for tabular excavations in hard-rock mines of any type. SPECIFICATIONS FOR RAPID-YIELDING PROPS Yield Requirements The yield requirements for hydraulic props in deep¬level hard-rock gold mines are summarized in the fol¬lowing paragraphs. Slow Yield Load: The design of the yield valve must allow the yield load to be preset to between 300 and 400 kN. This flexibility is necessary to account for the differences in the strength properties of the roof and floor strata. Drop in Load Under Slow Yield: The drop in sup¬port load during a slow yield should be as small as possible, but it should not exceed 5% of the slow-yield load. Rapid-Yield Load: The load exerted by the prop during periods of rapid stope convergence should be as close as possible to the slow-yield load. The rapid-yield load should not exceed the slow-yield load by more than 15% at yield rates of 1.0 m/s. The limitation of the upper valve of the yield load is important; it deter¬mines the hydraulic performance of the yield valve. The hydraulic props that satisfy this criterion have performed well, even under severe rock bursts. Load Changes Under Rapid Load: On some of the earlier rapid-yielding props, conditions of dynamic in¬stability were observed; these conditions resulted in a complete breakdown of support resistance. It is essen¬tial that the force oscillations during rapid yielding be as small as possible, not exceeding -*5% of the average rapid-yield load at a yield rate of 1.0 m/s. The conversion to the use of commercial grade ammonium nitrate (CGAN) for use in blasting at the Utah Copper Pit of the Kennecott Copper Corporation has presented unique problems for the Drilling and Blasting Department, In order to better understand these problems, a' picture of the Bingham Pit might be helpful. Some quarter of a million tons of ore and waste must be blasted daily in order to keep thirty-eight electric shovels operating. All material is blasted by "toe holes" of 24 to 28 feet in depth, drilled from prepared drill grades and sloped so as to bottom approximately 5 feet below the bench level. Horizontal spacing of these holes averages 22 feet, with exceptions being made where faults occur in the bank. These "toe holes" are drilled by 4-inch drifter machines, mounted on self-contained mobile drill units using .3-inch starter bits and bottoming at a minimum of 2 1/2 inches in diameter, "Toe-hole" drilling amounts to about two-thirds of the total drilling. In the higher bank sections of the Mine and wherever necessary, single rows of "down holes" are drilled to 28 feet in depth and spaced, on the average 23 feet apart. These holes are also drilled by a mobile drill. "Down hole" drilling amounts to about one-third of the total drilling.
