Back in 1994, Claude Bazin presented a novel method for linking size data from milling models to the feed input of flotation models. It was achieved with the simple addition of a metal/mineral distribution—size distribution relationship. This allows grade and recovery predictions from a varying mine plan via product size distribution predictions. This paper presents a case study where this elegant method has been used to build a very powerful forecaster at a process plant, built from historic operating data. The methodology has been used by this operation to forecast production on a quarterly, annual, and life-of-mine basis since the late 1990s. It has been upgraded several times to incorporate new drivers as the complexity of feedstocks has increased over the years.

The use of low-angle forward light scattering for measurement of particle size distribution has been described previously.1 Laboratory instrumentation using this technology is used routinely in operating plants for quality control and production control.2,3 Extension of the technique to on-line process monitoring and control has also been undertaken in several important areas. This paper will discuss the application of MICROTRAC R systems to the monitoring of particle size in wet slurry processes and dry powder grinding circuits. Examples of existing installations will be given with emphasis on performance and on-line reliability.

Optimisation of many oxide gold processing facilities, in most cases, either does not really take place or if it does take place it happens too late or takes too long. This is unf01tunate as extra profits and early cash flows are lost, in new projects, and/or may not be realised at all in others. The situation is easily avoid­ed by ensuring that the plant optimisation happens immediately following commissioning or for an established operation simply 'biting the bullet' and making it happen immediately as a 'better late than never' decision. This type of optimisation requires intense undiluted focus on each and every problem or restriction that contributes to reduced plant performance or bottlenecks, without letting go, until the predetermined outcome is produced. Thus a dedicated person with specific quantative goals is required for these tasks. Methodology and strategies for optimi­sation are discussed and numerous examples presented. The secret of successful heap leaching is discussed.

The University of Alabama Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites (francolite) in the pH range of 4-6 without collector conditioning of the pulp. The process, which does not require an apatite depressant, was modified to benepciate a high- MgO siliceous phosphate matrix from south Florida. The modified process includes two flotation stages, one for car- bonate removal and the other for phosphate recovery from the siliceous gangue. The selective flotation separation of the carbonate and phosphate from siliceous constituents of the matrix at various pH levels and collector dosages are discussed. In the carbonate flotation stage, about 70% of the MgO was rejected in the froth. The phosphate flotation stage produced concentrates analyzing about 31% P2O5 0.7% ? 5 MgO, and 4% insol. CRYSTALLIZATION from aqueous solution is a simple and old method for the recovery of metal values from leach solution. Practically all the methods for the recovery of aluminum from clay are based on the crystallization of an aluminum salt from the leach solution. Differences in solubilities may be used to advantage for separating two metals from the same leach solution. The classical method of Marignac (1866), which makes use of the difference in solubilities of K2TaF7 and K2NbOF5 to separate niobium from tantalum, has been used successfully in the manufacture of these metals (Fig. 10-1). The slurry containing the metal oxides is dissolved in 70 % hydrofluoric acid, diluted, and heated near boiling. A potassium salt is added in sufficient quantity to form the complex fluorides of the niobium and tantalum present. The solution is filtered and allowed to cool. At room temperature most of the tantalum salt crystallizes out while the niobium remains in solution.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The American Concrete Institute defines shotcrete as "mortar or concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface." This definition thus includes what is traditionally known as gunite, which is a pneumatically applied mortar. In mining practice, the term shotcrete is restricted to pneumatically applied concrete, and this differentiation will be used in this chapter. In 1914, following the invention of the mortar gun in 1907, then chief engineer of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) George Rice developed the gunite process for underground test work at the USBM facility at Bruceton, PA. After World War I, gunite was used extensively in American mines and was also utilized for underground civil works such as the San Jacinto tunnel in California. The greatest development was in Europe where, as early as 1911, gunite was successfully used as an overlay for deteriorated tunnel linings. In 1951, the Swiss firm Aliva developed a pneumatic gun capable of handling coarse aggregate, thus making possible the first use of shotcrete at the Maggia hydropower development. Initially, shotcrete was used to reduce manpower requirements for forming and placing conventional concrete. However, by 1954 Sonderegger was reporting that the structural advantages of shotcrete were derived from its flexibility and from the fact that it could be applied almost immediately after the opening had been made. The incorporation of wire mesh into the shotcrete led to the new Austrian tunnel method or NATM. The use of shotcrete in American mines has been implemented more recently. This delay seems to be due to previously unsuccessful experiences with gunite as a structural material and to the US reliance on wood or steel supports in main-line haulageways. The long experience with the apparently more substantial rigid supports led mine operators to be reluctant to accept the new and seemingly unrealistic lighter shotcrete support. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Shotcrete is a relatively new material for use in underground support systems. Consequently, experienced miners are not always available who are capable of applying the material effectively. Shotcrete, particularly in the small cross sections typical of mine shafts or haulageways, is applied in cramped quarters under less than ideal conditions. Adequate lighting should be made available. The surface should be clean and free of running or dripping water. It may be necessary to collect flowing water in plastic pipes or water collection devices. Any dry cement dust from previous shotcrete applications should be washed from the surface in order to assure a good bond. The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) while shooting test panels at the Cunningham tunnel in 1974, found that experienced shotcrete operators were able to obtain up to three times greater compressive strengths than were obtained by unskilled operators using the same equipment and shotcrete mix. ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS Since sodium and potassium hydroxide, as well as other moderately toxic compounds, are often contained in shotcrete (particularly where accelerators are used), safety precautions must be taken to prevent skin and respiratory irritation. Nozzlemen and helpers are required to wear gloves, protective clothing, and ventilation hoods with a filtered air supply. Respirators approved by USBM, equipped with chemical filters that will not pass the caustic mists, may be permitted in lieu of hoods if goggles or safety glasses are worn. Protective ointments are available to reduce skin irritation. All air and shotcrete feed hoses should be equipped with safety-type couplings and secured with safety chains at each coupling to prevent whipping in the event of a hose or coupling failure. Some environmental effects can take place down-stream from the development face being supported. The accelerator compounds, as well as the portland cement used in the shotcrete, will be found in the rebound material which falls to the invert of the heading. Since these compounds may be leached from the rebound material and carried by the drainage system, it may be necessary to install neutralizing or other water treatment facilities. Investigations may find that the final reaction with other compounds being leached from the mining operations may result in a more or less environmentally acceptable end product. USES OF SHOTCRETE General Uses Shotcrete, as a combination of cement, aggregate, and accelerator, is utilized for underground openings such as shafts, adits, haulageways, and service chambers for the following general purposes : (1) primary sup¬port; (2) final lining; (3) protective covering for excavated surfaces that are altered when exposed to air (the protective covering may be of a temporary or final nature); (4) protective covering for steel or wooden supports, rockbolts and rockbolt plates, heads, nuts, and other mats, including wire fabric, used to prevent rock-falls; and (5) as a lagging material in place of timber, steel, or concrete between steel or wooden supports. These applications can be grouped into three general use categories: shotcrete used as a rock sealant, shotcrete used as a safety measure, and shotcrete used as a structural support. Use as a Rock Sealant Thin applications of shotcrete can reduce or prevent slaking of shales or other rocks that are altered when exposed to the wetting and drying cycles created by mine ventilation circuits. While shotcrete may be effective in preventing such rock alteration, at the present time it is not as economical or efficient as other commercial sealants. However, if the sealant property can be incorporated into the structural support capability, the added contribution is usually helpful. Residential and commercial plumbers in the United States were introduced to Viega?s copper press technology in 1999. In short, the technology allows plumbers and installers to join copper pipe securely in four to seven seconds on pipe sizes of 1.2 to 10 cm (0.5 to 4 in.) by pressing the connections with specialized tools and fittings rather than through sodering or welding. The water- and air-tight technology, first introduced in Germany in 1989, includes three different sealing elements, a variety of materials and a selection of configurations. By eliminating the need to thread or solder pipe, connections and repairs can be made quickly and securely. Installations are also much quicker and as secure as traditional methods.

The liberation and exposure of valuable mineral grains in ore particles are of significant importance in understanding the efficiency of flotation separations. A flotation feed sample from the Kensington concentrator was scanned by micro Xray computed tomography (micro-XCT), to determine the liberation and exposure of auriferous pyrite grains. The analysis results suggest a satisfying extent of liberation for particle sizes smaller than 212 μm. Theoretical flotation recovery of pyrite for selected particle size fractions was predicted from the three-dimensional liberation and exposure analysis. The plant flotation tail was also characterized by micro-XCT to identify liberated and partially liberated pyrite particles that might not be collected into the concentrate. However, liberation analysis of the tail sample revealed that the majority of liberated pyrite was recovered in the plant flotation circuit. Trainable Weka, a machine learning segmentation approach, was compared with the Watershed thresholding segmentation for the 106 × 45 μm particle size fraction scanned at a voxel size of 1.85 μm. Improved segmentation of small particles was found using the machine learning method.

Albite (NaA1Si308) is one of the important raw materials for the rapidly developing Turkish ceramic and glass industry. Prior to 1980, development of the ceramic industry in terms of raw material was dependent upon small-scale mining operations; in the last decade, these efforts have increased substantially. The aim of this study is to investigate the geochemical properties and distribution of albite occurrences in the Kocayayla district, which is about 12 km northeast of the town of Milas, about 50 km west of the city of Mugla in southwestern Anatolia. Kocayayla is also well known for its famous ancient city, Labranda. The field area is located in the Menderes Massif, which was formed by major tectonic events during the Late Proterozoic and subsequent periods. The target area was studied to prepare a detailed geological map (scale, 1:10,000), and to determine the formation of albite-mica-schist-quartzite borders in the host rock gneiss. To do this, systematic sampling of albite was done in the two main areas, the Sarikaya and Yumruta? regions. In the study area, albite zones are scattered within an area of about 20 km2, and they extend in a northeast-southwest direction; mica-schists and quartzite veins accompany these units. Mineralogical observations show that quartz is the main mineral associated with albite. In the ceramic industry, the albite + quartz assemblage is well known and is classified as "standard" or "super type," depending upon the content of TiO2 and Fe203. In this study, the Sarikaya albites (profile I) exhibit remarkably lower TiO2 (0.15% on the average) values contrasted to that of Yumruta? (profile 11; 0.24% on the average), whereas Fe203 values vary slightly from 0.076% to 0.085% in both regions.

The United States is being invaded... by foreign capital: marks, francs, pounds, yen, lire, riyals, you name it: On almost any given day the Wall Street Journal will contain a new report on a department store, newspaper, bank, hotel, agricultural land, supermarket chain, et a1 being bought into by overseas investment. Xenophobic reaction to this revised national condition has begun to set in. Several farming states have and are introducing legislation to monitor foreign land buying. In Congress a mandatory reporting requirement for foreign purchasing is currently under study. In a relatively short period the country has reverted from world leader- ship in overseas acquisition and involvement to become itself one of the prime investment opportunities in existence. Interestingly enough, one of the industries where this changed status has become most apparent and pronounced is within that small/regional/segmented/low value-to-weight bulk commodity enterprise ranked as the backbone of the nation's construction activity. U.S. cement making is not only undergoing internationalization in its ownership, but also in its product, equipment, and engineering expertise.

This work presents a study of characterization of activated carbons for the adsorption of Au(CN)2- complex. A comparative study of six samples of activated carbons, three Brazilian and three produced out of Brazil was made in order to determine their qualification for a performance in adsorption circuits in the extractive metallurgy of gold. The adsorptive capacity and the kinetics of adsorption were compared to the physical and chemical properties of each one. The influence of poluant ions on the kinetics and loading capacity of aurocianyde anion was also determined.

The well-being of any company is directly related to the well-being of its employees and to the effectiveness with which the personnel resource is managed. In an era when personnel management has steadily become more complex, there is an increased awareness of employee information systems at all levels of management due to: (1) regulations enacted by federal, state, and local government agencies; (2) technological advances within the mining industry which have resulted in the requirement for highly skilled personnel; (3) increasing concern for the confidentiality of employee information; and (4) management's need for information for planning purposes to control costs and for early recognition of trends and potential problems. In the past it was sufficient to maintain records manually. Today computers are necessary to provide information on short notice and effectively manipulate large volumes of' data. This discussion will describe the following aspects of employee information systems: (1) collection and maintenance of information, and (2) applications which include employee health, salary administration, management re- sources, and labor negotiations.

Strategic mine planning focuses on cutoff grade selection, capacity planning and block sequencing. Despite significant knowledge accumulated, potential value can be added to mineral sourcing by addressing various aspects. A case study on a metallic deposit with a lognormal grade distribution examines if grade/metal distribution influences cutoff grade selection. Six data sets with different shape and scale factors, but the same ore tonnage and metal quantity, are analyzed. Results indicate deposits with lower shape and scale factors are more sensitive to metal price and discount rate changes. The study also investigates the effect of economies of scale (EoS) on project value, focusing on the ratio of variable cost to total cost (capacity factor). Two regression analyses are conducted for optimal capacity planning and cutoff grade selection. The first shows capacity planning is highly sensitive to the EoS of mining and mineral-processing costs, with grade variability and metal distribution being negligible. In the second analysis, grade variability and EoS of mineral processing costs are vital for cutoff grade selection.

During the decade of the 1970's, a new emphasis was placed on assuring a safe and healthful workplace for all American workers. Much of the basis for this national effort was federal legislation: the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (amended from the 1969 Coal Mine Act). One of the agencies involved in this protection effort is the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). In fulfilling its mandates under the 1970 and 1977 Acts, NIOSH conducts research, experiments, and demonstrations to support and stimulate advancements in health and safety practices. Priorities for NIOSH research are established primarily through congressional mandates, requests from the Department of Labor, needs as defined by NIOSH researchers, and surveillance information. Emphasis is placed on research in the areas of toxicology, industrial hygiene, physical and chemical sciences, physiology, ergonomics, engineering, psychology (behavior and motivation), and epidemiology (industry-wide studies). The framework of the current Institute program to identify, evaluate, and control occupational hazards includes activities in surveillance, research, evaluation, and training. These activities are planned and evaluated through a system that coordinates the efforts of eight research and scientific divisions. Each division develops projects to address program areas that have been identified by NIOSH management as having highest priority. In surveillance programs, the objectives are to identify substances and agents found in a representative sample of workplaces and to collect and evaluate information on rates of disease and injury in occupational groups. Information is also collected on occupational safety and health programs implemented by industry. Estimates of worker exposures and the potential for adverse health effects are considered in setting priorities for further investigations. A related activity, which also serves to provide technical assistance to industry, is NIOSH's Health Hazard Evaluation program. On-site investigations of workplaces are made in response to worker, employer, or government agency requests. Both industrial hygiene and medical examinations are conducted, and the results contribute to identifying new problems and evaluating their significance which may have public health implications beyond the particular worksites that are investigated. Field and laboratory research projects are performed to meet several objectives: - Characterize the working environment by evaluating current and past exposure levels for workers who are included in epidemiological or medical investigations. - Develop epidemiological information to define the association between the substance or agent under investigation and the acute and chronic health effects on workers. - Determine through animal studies the parameters of an association between exposure and effect. - Investigate the etiology of disease. - Develop sampling and analytical instruments and techniques and demonstrate their application for measuring toxic materials in the workplace. - Formulate sampling strategies that will accurately and precisely indicate exposure levels. - Develop medical procedures to prevent disease and to detect the presence of disease and early indicators of disease. - Assess the technology for control of exposures, including engineering and administrative techniques, personal protective equipment, and work practices. Presently, the research program is focused on reproductive effects, neurotoxic effects, injury/trauma, lung disorders, cutaneous disorders, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, stress-related disorders, effects of physical agents, digestive disorders, and renal and other organic disorders. In studying these issues, priorities are determined by the seriousness of possible adverse health effects resulting from occupational exposures, the feasibility of studying existing records or obtaining new data, and the size of the population which is potentially affected. Where there is low level of suspicion concerning adverse health effects or where an occupational disease occurs in a variety of industrial environments, investigations are limited to gross analyses of health effects such as review of mortality patterns. In such studies, the industrial populations selected are those for which existing data resources can be utilized. Such data consists of records of occupational exposures or health status which have been maintained by the employer, the union, or Government agencies. Where a review of the available information suggests that serious health hazards exist and the existing data resources are inadequate for quantifying the relationship between the specific biological response and type and degree of exposure, prospective studies are initiated. Information derived from such research is essential for the development of sound criteria for control of industrial exposures to noxious agents. Other input to the criteria documentation process comes from searching and evaluating the literature. Criteria documents contain the recommendation of an environmental limit where information is available to support it, as well as the recommendation of work practice controls, medical evaluation, information for workers to recognize and avoid the hazard, and identification of specific research gaps. In some cases, during the criteria document preparation, gaps in knowledge are found which necessitate further research before an occupational standard can be recommended.

The expanding: demand for ilmenite for use in the manufacture of titanium pigments, the knowledge that much of this raw material comes from distant points and therefore has to include a heavy freight charge in the price of the delivered product, and the further knowledge that ilmenite occurs both in the crystalline rocks of northern New Jersey and also in some of the Triassic igneous rocks, were considerations which led to a search for ilmenite-bearing sands in southern New Jersey. That this search was successful is now history, and it is the senior author's privilege to state here that most of the credit belongs to his associates who did all of the heavy work of hand-augering for samples, and who made all of the heavy-mineral separations. We all are grateful to members of the Department of Geology at Rutgers and Princeton Universities for the use of equipment which enabled us to evaluate certain samples from our ilmenite exploration program. In addition, we wish to express our appreciation to many companies for their cooperation and for their permission to publish mineral and chemical analyses. The Payback Period (PBP) is one of the most widely applied project evaluation criteria 'in the mineral industry. As much as this criterion is liked by practitioners, it is also criticized by academicians who seriously question its validity. Inspired by this criticism, the author of this paper examines the classical definition of the PBP criterion, and formulates a new one designed for both investment and borrowing projects. It is demonstrated that the PBP, in its revised version, is free from all the shortcommings of the old one, and is fully compatible with the Net Present Value (NPV) criterion, as well as with all the other NPV compatible project evaluation criteria. Since the traditional approach to the comparison of mutually exclusive projects (MEP1s) by means of the PBP criterion has been incorrect, the paper also outlines the correct approach to this problem. Finally, owing to the fact that the PBP depends on the assumed interest rate, and using a specially developed computer program, the PBP is graphically presented, in six numerical examples, as a function of the interest rate.

This study is a continuation of previous work designed to further explore the mechanism of the bioleaching of sulfide concentrate at neutral pH by heterotrophic bacteria Bacillus megaterium QM B1551. The concentrate contained 13.2 percent nickel (Ni) and 0.2 percent cobalt (Co), which presented primarily as pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Contact and noncontact bioleaching experiments were conducted with finely ground ore at an initial pH of 6, resulting in 44.7 percent of Ni and 38.2 percent of Co leached in the contact-bioleaching treatment. Oxidation experiments of sulfur, thiosulfate (S2O32−) and ferrous ions (Fe2+) by cell membrane were performed to verify whether sulfur transferase, thiosulfate quinone reductase and enzyme cytochrome B558 on the surface of the bacteria could be expressed to oxidize the sulfide. The results show that thiosulfate quinone reductase and cytochrome B558 could be expressed to oxidize S2O32− and Fe2+ to SO42− and Fe3+, respectively.

The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company is one of the world's major phosphate rock and phosphatic fertilizers producers (the second largest phosphate rock exporter), with ore reserves exceeding 2 billion tonnes, mainly located in the Eshidiya area. The Eshidiya phosphate deposits, 120 km north-east of Aqaba, are of sedimentary origin (as are all phosphate ore in Jordan). Three exploitable beds (Al, A2, and A3) with variable content of P205, CaO, SiO2, etc., are processed in order to produce 68-70,73-75, and 75-77% TCP grades. The A3 bed, which is characterized as the most siliceous containing 40-48% TCP, requires physical beneficiation using wet scrubbing, screening, and desliming by hydrocylone, followed by anionic conventional flotation to achieve 75- 77% TCP grade. For the last 15 years extensive laboratory and pilot tests (including physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies) were carried out. After operating the industrial plant, certain modifications were deemed necessary to adjust the operational parameters and the final flowsheet, which was followed to obtain the targeted quantity and quality of concentrate.

"INTRODUCTION Chino is an open-pit copper mining complex faced with intricate material routing requirements. Historically, this was challenging at the mine, in part because the shovel dig plan, haul plan, and dump plan were prepared completely separately. The mine now uses an integrated workflow for faster evaluation of schedules, which facilitates preparing balanced cutoff grade-to-equipment requirements, supports better mineral production, and improves schedule viability, while considering operational implications. Located in the state of New Mexico, Chino is one of nine Freeport-McMoRan mining operations in North America. This presentation discusses the benefits of implementing an integrated approach to tactical mine planning, and shares practical examples that were learned as Chino implemented an integrated tactical planning method. This includes improvements in completion time for preparing a schedule, minimal risk from manipulating Excel macros, data integration required to make short-term planning decisions, and better understanding of the mine plan’s effect in relation to the business’s key performance indicators. Ultimately, the integrated approach to tactical mine planning at Chino has led to production forecasts which are more achievable and reduced planning and execution variance. PROJECT OVERVIEW Chino mine is a porphyry copper deposit wholly owned by Freeport-McMoRan, the largest publicly traded copper producer in the world. Chino mine is located in Grant County, New Mexico, a short distance east of Silver City. Ore material mined from the pit today includes oxides, primary sulfides, and secondary sulfides. The mineralized material is sent to a mill, with a rated throughput of 42,000 tons per day, or to ROM leach pads with variable dumping capacities. At Chino, the short-range objective is to maximize total copper pounds sent to the mill, but no fixed cutoff grade accomplishes this for all periods. Instead, 12 different material classifications, including four sulfide classes that can feed either the mill or other destinations, and 38 cutoff bins, are aligned with the needs from operations, leaching, and the concentrator to create a schedule. Cutoffs vary from one week to another to cope with a highly intermittent ore body."
