The mutual growth of the rare earth industry and the Mountain Pass Operations was no coincidence. It was the commercial availability of rare earths on a scale first made possible by the capacity of the Mountain Pass Operations that spurred research and development efforts toward new applications for rare earths. The first important demand on Mountain Pass was europium oxide for the activation of red phosphor for color television tubes in 1964. Since that time, other rare earths have become even more important, and Molycorp is continuing to supply an ever widening variety of rare earth concentrates and compounds. We enjoy saying that rare earths are not really rare, and that they are not earths, either. Of course, we are talking about the 15 metallic elements with atomic numbers 57-71, called the lanthanides, which occur in nature always together in very similar proportions. Their scarcity can be gauged by the fact that there is more cerium in the earth's crust than there is tin, and more europium than cadmium. The word "earths" comes from the early chemical term for oxide. The rare earths were discovered as oxides, and the term has persisted.

The traditional impeller system for aeration and suspension of slurries, e.g., in bacterial oxidation plants, is the vertical flat blade turbine (VFBT) . This type of impeller is energy-intensive, which results in a heavy-duty design of shaft, gearbox and drive. The VELMIX bio-reactor development programme is designed to evaluate the use of the new generation of hydrofoil impellers which consume less power and thus have poten­tial for capital and operating cost savings as well as being possibly less damaging to the bacteria. The early tests on pyrite oxidation in a 300 litre laboratory pilot tank using the Thiobacillus ferro oxidans bacteria, showed that hydrofoil impellers had superior charc­teristics to the VFBT impeller and to air­ agitated pachucas, with lower energy input. The geometry of the sparge _ring was found to be very important in optimizing the system.

Through-the-Earth (TTE) communication systems were developed to provide post-accident communication in underground mines. Unlike primary tracking systems, they do not require any major infrastructure installations underground. Instead, they use the Earth’s overburden as the medium or channel for the transmission of electromagnetic waves between surface and underground. Under ideal conditions, TTE communication systems should be able to provide full-duplex, two-way voice, text and data communication. However, this will depend on the design and optimization of the different types of TTE communication systems (that is, antenna and electrodes), and understanding of the rock properties and their influence on the transmission of signals. This can help simulate and model the transmission efficiencies and predict the possible range and data rates. Being able to optimize the performances of these systems can enhance rescue missions, improving the chances of saving trapped miners, and ultimately reduce fatality rates across the mining industry.

INTRODUCTION Radioactive deposits were observed in 1972 in some of the Upper Silesian coal mines. They were located mainly in the drains in galeries and on the inside surfaces of water pipes. They also caused some problems by accumulating in water pumps. It has been postulated that the deposits are produced by natural radioactive waters seeping from the rocks. Investigations were initiated to answer the following questions: - What is the composition and the amount of radioactivity in the deposits? - What radioisotopes are present in the water? - How are the radioactive deposits formed? - Do the radioactive waters also occur in other mines? - How does the radioactivity of the water depend on chemical composition? - What is the origin of the radioactive water? - Does the water and the deposits cause radiation hazards for miners? -How can the radiation hazard be reduced? METHODS OF MEASUREMENT Determination of Radium Isotopes in Water The commonly used methods of radium determination in water are either based on measurements of the radioactivity of 222Rn which is in equilibrium with 226Ra, or on the detection of alpha particles of the radium radioisotopes after chemical separation of radium from the water sample. The method based on radon activity measurements is very sensitive and does not require any chemical Separation, but it can be used for determination of 226Ra from the uranium series only, because the thorium daughter 220Rn has too short a half-life (55s to yield the required accuracy. The method developed by Goldin, 1961 [2] involved alpha-particle measurements in thin layers of RaS04 and BaS04 separated from the water. This method is not convenient for saline water and water with high barium concentration because the amount of barium carrier in this case is too large to obtain a thin layer of precipitate with sufficient activity. The Upper Silesian carboniferous waters are often saline with high barium content, so the method described by Goldin was not convenient for this case and it was necessary to change the detection system and modify the chemical preparation. The procedure developed by the authors for the determination of radium isotopes in water was as follows: - Depending on the Ba2+ content and the required sensitivity of measurement, a water sample of 200 cm3 to 3 dm3 was taken. - 10 cm3 of 0.25 M citric acid and 5 cm3 15M ammonia was added to form complex Ba2+ ions and avoid the immediate precipitation of BaSO4. (This was repeated as long as the addition of BaC12 did not form a precipitate.) - 1 cm3 of 1N solution of Pb(N03)2 as a carrier for radioactive isotopes of lead and 10 cm3 of 0.1 N BaC12 as a carrier for radium were added. - The sample was heated to the boiling point and the precipitation of RaS04, BaSO4 and PbS04 with 50% H2SO4 was carried out. - After several hours the sample was centrifuged and the precipitate was purified by washing with nitric acid and distilled water. - The precipitate was then redisolved in 20 cm3 0.125 M Na2EDTA and 3 cm3 6M ammonia and reprecipitated from the solution by dropwise addition of acetic acid to d pH of 4.5. At this value of pH, precipitation occurs only for the barium and radium sulfates, while lead and all other radioactive elements remain in the solution. The date and time of deposit precipitation was recorded. - The final barium-radium sulfate mixture was washed with distilled water and transferred to standard measurement vials. - Each vial containing a deposit had 6 cm3 of distilled water added and was then shaken vigorously. 12 cm3 of liquid gelling scintillator (INSTA-GEL UNISOLV-1 type) was then added and the vi 1 was shaken again. After a while the scintillator turns into a milky gel in which the deposit is uniformly distributed. - The standard sample of 226Ra was prepared in the same way. - The activity of the samples was measured using a liquid scintillation spectrometer. (In this case the TRICARB 3320 produced by Packard Instruments, was used). Tests run on standard radium solutions provided by Amersham Radiochemical Centre indicated that this method of measurement enables one to achieve an efficiency of almost 100% (within measurement error). For alpha particles no quenching effect was observed for the BaS04 concentration in the range up to 80 mg of BaS04 per 1 cm3 of liquid scintillator coctail (Fig. 1). The search for noncyanide lixiviants for treating gold and silver ores and concentrates is not a new endeavor. However, in recent years, the overall activity to seek a less environmentally controversial reagent than cyanide has occasioned considerable developmental work. While the elegant economy and simplicity of cyanide, because of its selectivity and the ease of recovering gold and silver from the cyanide complexes, is well recognized, two failings have justified the search for alternates: increasing concerns and costs to assure avoidance of environmental damage from cyaniferous liquids and solids, and the need to simplify recovery of gold and silver from refractory ores. Generally, process development work to date on the alternate reagents has lacl<::ed environmental focus ( Hiskey and Devries, 1992). This paper covers briefly the chemistry of various alternates to cyanide and reviews their environmental implications. In each case, environmental overtones are reviewed following the chemistry. Control of respirable dust in mines has been given paramount importance due to the health and safety implications associated with fine dust. Understanding the temporal and spatial behavior of dust has been recognized as essential for increasing the efficiencies of existing control techniques and for developing new control strategies. Mining-related studies in this area are, in general, limited. They are also mostly experimental. Some mathematical and computer analyses have been at-tempted. In this paper, first, a review of the mathematical studies performed in the last three decades in this area is presented. Second, a mathematical model for analyzing dust flow in mines is proposed. The model takes into account a number of factors affecting dust transport. It in¬corporates varying dust generation source strengths and dispersion, deposition, and coagulation of dust in mine airways. Finally, application areas for the model are discussed. A computer program based on the mathematical model has been developed. The program will output the dust concentration in the mine atmosphere as a function of time and distance from the source. The amount of dust deposited on the sides, roof, and floor of the airway is also determined.

Poland in time of transition had been dealing with the remnants of the previous regime ? particularly in the field of environmental protection. The burden left was tremendous and there was a need for fast and effective tools for improving the environment. The idea of environmental protection had been supported by the introduction of a new environmental policy that underlined the importance of sustainable development in industry in the beginning of 1990s. This policy introduced high environmental fees and fines ? a concept not very popular in Europe in that time ? and good only for a country in transition to boost the protection of the environment. While this policy had its role to play, its role is now completed. It is time to move forward, especially when these environmental charges affect the international competitiveness of industries so much, and at the same time have virtually no influence on environmental protection investments any more.

Elemental sulfur deposits generally can be classified as either volcanogenic or biogenic. The latter can be divided into biosyngenetic and bioepigenetic deposits. Essentially all economically important sulfur deposits are bioepigenetic replacements of anhydrite or gypsum in basins containing evaporites and hydrocarbons. Anaerobic bacteria utilize the oxygen of sulfate ions to oxidize hydrocarbons to C02 and reduce the sulfate to H2S. Sulfur deposits are formed by concomitant and subsequent oxidation of the H2S. These bacterial systems can operate on enormous scales, producing deposits containing over 200 million tons of elemental sulfur. There are no known "old" sulfur deposits; almost all known deposits are younger than Miocene and most are still actively forming today. Therefore, it is probable that, with burial and time, sulfur deposits are converted to sulfide deposits. Perhaps more important, bacterial oxidation of hydrocarbons and resultant production and trapping of large quantities of H2S appears to be the logical explanation for the location of many important metal sulfide deposits such as the Mississippi Valley type lead and zinc deposits.

Existing process technologies for the production of soda ash from trona involves dissolution in hot brine, sedimentation and filtration for the removal of impurities, and subsequent crystallization for the recovery of soda ash. In this regard, mining and operating costs, particularly energy costs, are higher than desired. A preferred processing strategy might be to remove gangue mineral contaminants from the plant feed prior to dissolution in hot brine. Such a preprocessing strategy at ambient temperature and pressure has been limited by the lack of satisfactory process technology. Now based on recent results from laboratory research at the University of Utah it seems that the run-of-mine trona ore can be treated at ambient temperature and pressure using a special flotation procedure to separate the gangue minerals and make a trona concentrate with a purity of almost 99% trona at a recovery of more than 97%. The concept of such a new processing strategy is discussed with respect to current plant practice.

"The Station “C13” of Warsaw Underground Line II, with tunnel crown 10m below the water table, required the excavation of three connection tunnels, underpassing a six-lane in service road tunnel, working from two lateral shafts. After the collapse occurred while digging the first tunnel, the use of artificial ground freezing was chosen to ensure the excavation under safe conditions. A complex freezing pipe geometry and excavation sequencing was necessary because of the interferences of the overlying road tunnel diaphragm wall foundations, shaft internal structures and previous grouting activities. A combined freezing method was used: nitrogen for freezing the tunnel arches, brine for freezing the intermediate wall and for maintenance stages. Sandy and silty sandy layers were frozen around the crowns and sides. No treatment was necessary for the inverts, lying in clay. A monitoring system of ground temperatures and structure movements allowed for successful completion of work in 8 months. INTRODUCTION The C13 Station of the Warsaw Underground-Line II is located on the West bank of the Vistula River. It consists of two shafts and three connecting tunnels, passing under the Wislostrada (WS) Road tunnel. According to the initial geotechnical investigation, tunnels should have been excavated in high-plasticity clay, but during the first borings non cohesive soil was encountered. Additional investigations were performed on both shafts and a more detailed stratigraphy was reconstructed (Lombardi et al. 2015). Layers of fine sand, sandy silt and sandy silty clay were present along the tunnels crown arches and in the North East tunnel they extended down to the centre line (-13.735m above the Vistula River medium level). Based on the new stratigraphy, it was decided to stabilize the crown and control the groundwater inflow from the face with jet-grouting columns extending the treatment down to the clayey soil, but a collapse occurred in the North West tunnel with soil and water inflow inside the shaft."

INTRODUCTION The General Chemical Soda Ash Operation located near Green River, Wyoming produces about 4.5 Mt of trona per year. In July 1989, Mine Ventilation Services Inc. performed a ventilation survey of this complex trona mine which had thirteen active panels spread over 36 square kilometers. The ventilation survey and subsequent study showed that the intake shaft air velocities were at their practical limits (Wallace and Rogers, 1987). The need for additional intake capacity was immediate. The ventilation network modeling delineated the best location for this new intake shaft as it applied to the 5 year ventilation plan. Unfortunately, this location, 6.5 kilometers from the soda ash processing plant, would make heating this intake air very costly. Presently, the intake air is heated by heat exchangers which use waste heat from the plant. Air heating during the winter months is necessary for miner comfort and to prevent potential freezing of water lines in the mine. It was decided to examine the feasibility of heating the air geothermally by coursing it through an old production panel. This method of air heating has been used in this region with good results at the Stauffer Chemical Operation (now Rhone-Poulenc) (Moore, 1985). In 1990, a geothermal heating study examined four different production shaft/panel configurations and a workable design was found. The operators at the General Chemical Soda Ash Operations acted on this design and began raise boring a ventilation shaft in the Spring of 1991. This paper describes the ventilation system, briefly, and the geothermal heating studies performed. Findings of the 1990 geothermal studies are then compared to field data acquired in the Winter of 1992. THE VENTILATION SYSTEM The ventilation system at General Chemical had four shafts serving the mining horizon in July 1989; three of these shafts are located at the Northwest end of the mine. The active work areas had progressed to the South over the past years and supplying ventilation has become increasingly difficult. The 6.1 meter diameter #3 Production shaft and the men and materials compartment of the 6.1 meter diameter #2 Split Shaft had reached their air velocity limits. Conversely, the 4.6 meter diameter #5 Exhaust Shaft was under utilized. Ventilation studies showed the conversion of the 3.7 meter diameter #1 Exhaust Shaft to an intake would provide adequate intake capacity for two years. The next option to improve ventilation was the addition of an intake shaft at the southeast part of the mine at the intersection of H Mains South(H-M-S)and J Mains East(J-M-E) (See Figure 1). A service shaft has been planned for the extreme Southeast end in the late 1990&apos;s. Ventilation network analyses showed this interim intake shaft would have to be at least 2.5 meters in diameter to postpone the service shaft construction beyond 1995. The greater the size of the borehole, the further the construction could be postponed. In October 1991, General Chemical commissioned the 4.57 meter diameter #4 Ventilation Shaft near the junction of H-M-S and J-M-E as shown in Figure 1. The L95 panel would be used for air heating as described in the geothermal heating section to follow. GEOTHERMAL STUDIES Geothermal heating studies were performed by MVS Inc. in May 1990. Using a modified code of CLIMSIM, an underground mine climatic simulation model, several different shaft/panel configurations were examined to see which would provide adequate air heating during the winter months. CLIMSIM simulates heat flow into a single underground airway. The program was used to evaluate the heat flow to and from the airway surface and to calculate the resulting change in dry bulb temperature of the ventilating air. CLIMSIM uses inlet air conditions, airway characteristics, and rock thermal properties input by the user to predict the variation of psychrometric and thermodynamic parameters along an underground airway.

In recent years the hue and cry of American industry concerning the pressure of foreign competition on the domestic marketplace has become all too familiar to most of us, as we are all well aware, the steel industry has not been exempted from this pressure, reduced production levels, work force cutbacks, and in some extreme cases, plant closings and company liquidations have resulted, new regulations governing imports and quotas have been enacted, foreign trade agreements reached, and more strict regulation enforcement practices undertaken, despite these, and other measures, the impact of aggressive foreign competition has not lessened, the concensus of numerous management consultants is that in order to successfully cope with these problems we must draw on all available technology to provide the tools which will enable us to enhance our management effectiveness, one area requiring particularly close attention in any mining operation is that of managing critical resources - namely time, energy and equipment in a fast and efficient manner, In mining, with critical resources deployed over a large geographical area, any degree of success involved with resource management is dependent upon knowing the current status of all work related activities, if we, as mine operators, are to be more successful in this area, additional tools are a necessity and modern technology has provided a multitude of new options from which to choose.

The recent heightening of environmental issues has forced more and more mining operations to focus on developing new methods to control dust problems encountered at their concentrate dryers, stock piles, tailings ponds and during the loading, transportation and unloading of their products. The development of dust control agents requires a quick reliable and most of all accurate method to evaluate the performance and to optimize the formulation of these products in the laboratory, thus avoiding expensive field trial evaluations. This paper gives an overview of the industry requirements for specialty dust control agents, application techniques and current laboratory evaluation procedures. The paper will also outline the development of a unique dust suppression testing apparatus called the "Dust Box, which is used to evaluate chemical dust suppressants at the laboratory level. Laboratory results from two test programs on different substrates are presented in the paper.

1. Introduction This is a report on applications of the earth pressure type balanced shield tunneling projects executed under narrow streets on soft alluvial layers in Japan. Japan is a long island country surrounded by the sea. Steep mountain ranges run along the archipelago and numerous rivers originate from the mountains, leaving only limited areas of flat land along the upper and middle reaches of the streams. The majority of cities in Japan are on soft alluvial layers. Alluvium represents an extremely complex soil formation, sections bordering diluvium being characterized by sharp undulations. Various difficulties are therefore encountered in shield tunneling work undertaken in such ground conditions. Particularly, at work sites lying in an unstable, waterbearing layer with high permeability, shield excavation becomes utterly impossible, hampered by large amounts of underground water as well as land collapsing caused by the water. Even when work can somehow be accomplished by using chemical grouting or by lowering ground water level, which require extra expenses and time, undesirable effects such as ground surface settlement are unavoidable in projects undertaken in the past. The newly developed method allows safe and accurate tunnel excavation at normal speed and without giving any adverse effects on buildings above, even under such unstable ground conditions. An outline of this new method was announced at the "International Tunnel Symposium &apos;78" held in Tokyo, and the method has since been employed in a number of tunneling projects in this country. The topic of the presentation will be the excavation of 25,000 IF, 11-foot 0-inch diameter, hard rock tunnel using a Robbins boring machine on the Terror Lake Hydroelectric Project on Kodiak Island, Alaska. This tunnel was completed on a tight construction schedule under some unusual conditions. The tunnel was mined through hard massive granite with faults and high water flows up to 7,000 GPM encountered at the heading in some areas. New innovations in equipment and cutter design were used.

In the last three years there have been four uncontrolled heating events in mines that have been attributed to the use of polyurethane foam as a void fill product. These heating events are due to the exothermic reaction that occurs during application of these polymeric products. These events led the Mine Safety and Health Administration to issue a safety alert on polyurethane products used in void filling and ground consolidation in mining, with the goal of educating the mining community about this potential hazard. This paper provides an overview of various types of polymeric products and best practices, the factors that contributed to the heating events, and case studies involving polymeric products.

For this paper, blending is conceived as a linear process that takes a proportion from one stockpile or location and mixes it with another proportion from another stockpile or location, with the aim of obtaining a set of attributes in the final combination that satisfies a given quality standard. A blending class is the combination of ore attributes and grade limits that should be stockpiled in order to achieve the target quality for the process Plant. Current literature considers the number of blending classes in the Open Pit Scheduling Problem as fixed; however, this paper shows how to define specific blending classes for a given deposit so that the schedule can be solved with Sequential Linear Programming. Finally, a practical application in a Peruvian copper mine is shown, involving four ore attributes: alteration code, arsenic, oxide content and copper grade. INTRODUCTION In copper ore deposits, blending for quality has not been a typical issue as it was for coal and iron ore; however, current copper deposits in the world are becoming geologically and chemically more complex than in the past and is not uncommon to have quality standards involving up to four attributes, introducing an additional complexity to the mine scheduling process [1]. In order to solve the Open Pit Scheduling Problem with multiple ore quality constraints, two assumptions are necessary [2]: - Grade constraints are defined only by specifying an upper and lower limit; - Ore attributes in stockpiles are pre-determined, i.e., the upper and/or lower grade limits defining each stockpile are already known at the time of setting the schedule. Assuming each ore attribute is classified as high, medium or low, and there are four attributes to be controlled in the target ore quality, the number of possible blending classes would be 3^4 = 81. This number is impractical to manage in Operations, and increases the complexity at the time of running the schedule; therefore, a more efficient way of classifying ore is required. Note that in practice, one blending class can be split into more than one stockpile location due to physical capacity constraints. Therefore, the number of stockpiles could even be more than 81. BLENDING CLASSES DETERMINATION For a given set of ore grades with lower and upper limits to be achieved, one has to find all feasible ore classes such that when blended, their grades will lie within those limits.

Buttressing is a widely employed control measure for mitigating slope failure in various settings such as openpit mines, road sections, dams, and hilly or rocky terrains. This paper presents a study on the effects of buttressing, specifically concerning slide-head toppling failure. Drawing insights from a case study of slide-head toppling in Zambia, our investigation employs both analytical (limit equilibrium) and numerical (3DEC software) modeling techniques. The analytical and numerical models exhibit notable similarities in their schematics and overall results, revealing a subtle effect of buttressing in controlling slide-head toppling failure. This study contributes valuable insights into the nuanced role of buttressing in slope stability, with implications for optimizing buttress design parameters. While the overall findings suggest a modest influence of buttressing on slide-head toppling failure, further discussions delve into the specific implications and potential refinements for practical applications.

Back in 1994, Claude Bazin presented a novel method for linking size data from milling models to the feed input of flotation models. It was achieved with the simple addition of a metal/mineral distribution—size distribution relationship. This allows grade and recovery predictions from a varying mine plan via product size distribution predictions. This paper presents a case study where this elegant method has been used to build a very powerful forecaster at a process plant, built from historic operating data. The methodology has been used by this operation to forecast production on a quarterly, annual, and life-of-mine basis since the late 1990s. It has been upgraded several times to incorporate new drivers as the complexity of feedstocks has increased over the years.
