Engineers today face a tremendous challenge. Growing population and rising standards of living all over the world are creating unprecedented and accelerating demands on and for all kinds of technology. At the same time, the public is becoming more and more conscious of--and concerned with--the impact of technology on human welfare. The growing controversy over the Supersonic Transport is a case in point, It is clear that the modern engineer must expect to spend a growing share of his time considering this dilemma and evaluating the tools that are available to him, not only with respect to their adequacy for the job at hand but also their capability for meeting the increasingly demanding--and, in many cases, conflicting--requirements of the future. This meeting seems a particularly appropriate place to speculate about the future of mining technology. The summary of the state-of-the-art in surface mining contained in the papers scheduled for the International Conference, together with the recently published Surface Mining volume, constitute not only a major contribution to the technical literature but also form an impressive record of technologic progress. That record, and the advanced technology displayed in the exhibits, and to be discussed in the SME technical sessions demonstrate engineering achievement in which the mining community can justly take pride.

Construction of the first phase of the Sao Paulo Metro, the North-South Line, will be completed late in 1974. The downtown section of this line consists of 2.2 miles of 19.6-foot diameter soft ground tunnels and 3 subway stations. The entire tunnel - station package was let to one contractor. A plan and profile of the tunnels and stations is shown on Figure 1. Passage of the tunnels under Boa Vista Street in the Sao Paulo Financial District was one of the major challenges. The street is only 50 feet wide from building line to building line and flanked by 10 to 20 story buildings. The tunnels pass within 4 feet of adjacent footings. Further south, the tunnels run 13 feet below the flat foundations of the Caixa Economica, a massive 11 to 14 story building. Surface settlement had to he limited to less than .07 feet/tunnel and good face control and grouting procedures were essential. For this reason, full face cutting wheel tunneling machines were selected to drive the tunnels south of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia which included Boa Vista Street and the Caixa Economica. The tunnels north of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia were driven under a fairly wide Avenue and greater settlements were permitted. Open face shields were selected to drive these tunnels. Most of the work has now been completed and analyzed. As the size of the mills get larger and the liners get heavier, abetter means had to be found to handle liner replacement. McLellan Industries is famous for their innovative ideas andwas called upon by an engineering company to develop a mill liner crane. The first crane was developed for Similkameen about 1969 to serve a 32' Ø X 14' Long SAG Mill. The next was Island Copper in Port Hardy, B.C., the same size as Similkameen in 1970. At that time, we took existing hydraulic cranes and modified them to meet the mill configuration. In 1973, we developed a completely new approach for the Southern Peru copper mine at Tacna, Peru for a Ball Mill, size 16'-6" Ø X 19' Long. Each installation required a design study to meet the change in mill size, trunnion size, elevation of floor to feed trunnion, area at the feed or discharge end of the mill. We have supplied self-propelled units as well as lift in. When there is no room at the feed end and if the mill has a trunnion overflow discharge, we have the mill supplier provide a structural frame to span the sump and move the mill liner handier into position with the use of the overhead crane or a mobile crane.

Planning is a management tool used to solve problems and provide data and decision alternatives for company growth, profitability, and direction. Strategic planning is defined as the efforts needed to accurately measure the risks of obtaining a result from future actions given a finite number of outcomes. The techniques of strategic planning are being applied more and more to underground mine design as a result of the fierce market conditions underwhich the industry is facing today, and the conditions they will likely face in the future. The objectives of strategic planning are centered on the ability of the operator or company to manuever its limited resources to the best position available under the given future scenarios. This paper briefly examines the most popular techniques for accomplishing these objectives, how these techniques fit into the current mine management decision-making, and what results to expect from these techniques in planning efficient underground mines.

Optimization of a process is achieved by selecting, 'from all the known options, the most beneficial method of obtaining a product. It is rare that the optimum process is arrived at by conventional methods, because of the great amount of time required for developing and comparing all the options. On the other hand, it is now possible, by means of an optimization program based on special mathematical formulas involving an algorithm and implemented by a computer, to plot the optimum process realizing considerable savings and in a reasonably short time. The flow sheet arrived at in accordance with the optimization program described in this paper investigates and develops all the possible options and, with the aid of the computer, makes it possible to select the most economical ore beneficiation process. The options in an ore beneficiation process are all the possible trajectories that can be traced through the particle sizes to which the ore is reducible in the extraction of its valuable minerals. Although an ore can have a wide range of composition and several valuable minerals that can be extracted, this paper is concerned with the special case in which only one mineral is extracted from the ore and in which the maximum allowable percentage of impurities in the end product is defined.

INTRODUCTION For overland conveyors of several kilometres length and as well as wide for conveyors designed for high mass flows, the cost for the conveyor belting share is 40% to 50% of the invested cost 173. The German Standard DIN 22101 is used for calculation and dimensioning of - conveyor belts and belt conveyor components. Developments in rubber technology and conveyor belt design required a revision of the standard released in 1982 121, which was published in August 2001 131. New research results and publications 16-9, 13-15] led to a better understanding of the material behaviour and their influences on conveyor belts. Test and calculation methods have been established to determine the most important parameters which are related to the performance of a conveyor belt line. These parameters are • The running resistance of the idlers • The indentation resistance of the belt • The dynamic splice efficiency • The distribution of belt load in the splices, transition zones and on pulleys. As a result, new rubber compounds with low indentation losses allow the use of reduced friction coefficients and thus lead to reduced power consumption, smaller drives and lower belt tensions. The deeper understanding of the flux of forces within belt splices led to both optimised splice design and optimised rubber compounds which significantly improve the dynamic splice efficiency. Therefore, in accordance with the standard, the benefits of these technologies and the better understanding of material behaviour allow a reduction of belt strength still maintaining sufficient safety factors. Thus engineers are enabled to calculate belt tensions more exactly and users are encouraged to pay more attention to starting and braking techniques. DETERMINATION OF DRIVE FORCE According to the DIN standards the resistance to motion generally has to be determined for each different section of the belt conveyor including upper and lower run separately. The necessary drive power P is calculated as [ ] with v as the conveying speed. The total of all resistances to motion of carry and return run can be determined as [ ] FHo and FHu are the primary resistances consisting of the running resistances of the idlers, the indentation resistance of the belt, the fulling of the conveyed material and the flexure of the belt. While indentation resistance and idler resistance are measurable, they have been deter- mined to be responsible for up to 70% of the primary resistances covered by FH. Further FN is the secondary resistance that covers, for example, the resistance of feeding points and scrapers. Fa are the total slope resistances and Fs is the total of all special resistances, resulting, for example, from belt steering devices. These three resistances should be neglected in the following discussion. For conveyors where a determination of the substantial parts of the resistances to motion is not possible, according to the new DIN standard [31 a determination of the drive power is acceptable by using the fictitious friction factor) [ ] In this formula the index i identifies the individual section of the conveyor, 1 is the length of the section and MR, MG and ML are the related masses of the idlers, the belt and the load in kg/m. Sludges produced by lime treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) can contain significant quantities of base metals which represent both a potential hazard and a loss of values. A new technique for metal recovery from sludge is proposed by combining selective acid leaching and adsorption of metal ions by activated silica sol. The process is demonstrated on two AMD sludges, one containing primarily nickel and the second zinc. They were first treated with sulphuric acid (pH 3.5) to selectively leach the target metals and then activated silica sol was added to the leach solution to adsorb the nickel and zinc. Thickening and centrifuging gave about 90 percent rejection of the input volume to effluent. The adsorbed metals were redissolved by strong acid into a concentrated solution relative to the feed and the silica sol was recycled.

Reduced clearance is one of the most important characteristics of encumbered space in underground coal mining. Another key variable is the maximum velocity at which a piece of mobile mining equipment can operate in this limited space. Typical velocity- clearance curves for different mine transportation systems are developed and characterized. Applications of the relationships are examined, emphasizing their significance in the design and control of mine materials handling systems.

Although there have been great advances regarding the understanding of mine fires in underground mines in the last century, fires remain high risk incidents. During fire scenarios, many crucial decisions and actions can be made that greatly influence the outcomes of these scenarios. Underground worker decisions are mainly based on training and experience, which in some cases can be complemented with previous analysis of fire effects. In order to review the guidelines that should be taken into account for this kind of examination, a numerical analysis of effects produced by a shuttle car fire under five different ventilation conditions was carried out. The analysis provides some insightful recommendations for firefighting personnel such as time for direct attack and best attack position for first responders and fire brigade groups. Also, the most critical parameters for each scenario were determined. Finally, all results were systematically organized and a first approximation of a fire classification based on the tenability limits was provided for first responder and fire brigade groups. The methodology used in this study for the fire classification could allow for the most appropriate decisions by firefighting personnel increasing the probability to put fires out without compromising their health and safety. INTRODUCTION While there have been great advances regarding the causes of mine fires in underground mines in the last century “small fires have occurred and always will occur in underground mines” (Conti, Chasko, Wiehagen, & Lazzara, 2005). The response time and decisions made during an underground mine fire are critical elements that have direct influence on the event outcome. Mine fires can grow in size quickly causing catastrophic consequences, thus rapid and suitable response actions can result in the difference between an minor emergency situation and a disaster. Upon the confirmation of a fire, a decision must be made regarding whether to fight the fire or evacuate the mine. Even though all underground coal mines possess emergency response plans and firefighting personnel are highly trained, decisions can be complemented with previous numerical analyses. Such analyses could contribute with the knowledge of potential fire effects and consequently with fire preparedness in the mine. Preparedness in underground mines is an important element to reduce the probability of the negative consequences of a mine fire. The time elapsed between the detection of the fire and response in the early stage is a serious component since small fires can produce larger and more serious consequences. If a mine fire cannot be put out within the short time after discovery, the chance of getting the system back in balanced or the success of safely controlling and extinguishing a mine fire is reduced (Conti et al., 2005, Conti, Chasko, Wiehagen, & Lazzara, 2000, Trevits, Yuan, Teacoach, Valoski, & Urosek, 2009, Brake, 2013). As confirmed by Conti and others, if a mine fire cannot be controlled by direct firefighting methods the probability of extinguishing the fire, without sealing is greatly reduced (Conti et al., 2005). However, response actions such as direct extinguishment must be carried out without compromising the health and safety of the firefighting personnel (Kim, Lönnermark, & Ingason, 2010).

The accuracy of vibrating wire stress meters has been questioned by various users in the mining industry. During an in situ coal pillar study, a laboratory evaluation program was developed to determine whether stress meters could produce reliable measurements in coal. More than $0 stress meters were tested for accuracy, repeatability, effects of setting pressure, and the concept of using a single curve for interpreting the stress-meter data. The testing medium was lucite, a material with a modulus of elasticity very similar to coal. The evaluation demonstrated that the stress meters did provide repeatable measurements, but that accuracy was lacking when the recommended interpretation technique was used. Therefore, a new technique was developed that required all stress meters to be calibrated in the laboratory before use in the field. This new technique reduced the average error to typically less than 10% and, in the worst case, to below 15%.

The theory of ore flotation has developed at a rather fast rate and the application of theory to practice has been successfully investigated. Significant technological advances have been made in such areas as control of the ore grade, automation in metallurgical control through conductivity measurements, and the development of faster and continuous analytical techniques for ore pulp analysis. Further significant improvements in mill control are being_ investigated through the application of a computer control to the process. This represents the more advanced trend in process control. At the heart of a control system installation, the digital computer will communicate directly with process instrumentation, perform' complex calcu¬lations to determine on a timely basis the control settings for attaining optimum results and automatically furnish signals to effect control actions. The process is considered as an integrated unit and economic criteria are used to measure its performance. The approaches to a mathematical model development to describe the process, optimization and control schemes as applied to an ore beneficiation process will be discussed.

Steady-state material balances calculated from data measured at various locations around process units are useful for many purposes, such as metallurgical accounting, on-line control, and the development of mathematical models. Often it is possible to calculate material balances by several independent procedures when excess measurement information, i.e., redundant data, is available. Clearly, if the data were collected without measurement errors, a theoretical condition never found in practice, all material balances calculated from redundant data would be in agreement. The real situation is that error exists in practical measurements, so that the results of material balances determined from available optional procedures differ. Consequently, best fit computational procedures to improve the material balances by taking measurement errors into account have been formulated. Such procedures can be used also to judge whether measurements are grossly in error due to either faulty observations or defective data sensing devices. A variety of mathematical techniques are available which serve to adjust raw data. The adjusted data permit mass balancing that does not depend on the computational method. To illustrate the need for an adjustment procedure, Table 1 shows a raw data set acquired around the Brenda Mines Ltd. No. 4 grinding circuit shown schematically in Fig. 1. At least seven optional ways to calculate a circulating load ratio may be employed. These are shown in Table 2 where, depending upon the calculation [ ]

During the gold cyanidation process, cyanide can be lost from the leachate by various chemical routes. The products of these cyanide losses include base metal cyanide complexes, thio­cyanate and cyanate. These losses are particularly important when treating pyritic or cupriferous ores since the two most sig­nificant cyanic ides, in order of importance, are sulfides and cop­per bearing minerals (I). Cyanidation of pyritic minerals results in the formation of thiocyanate. The problems caused by cyanide soluble copper minerals are well known to the gold processing industry and have been reviewed by several authors (e.g. 2, 3). An important consider­ation, especially with a number of more recent leaching tech­nologies, is the effect of the CN :Cu mole ratio, R, on the gold leaching kinetics. In order to efficiently leach cupriferous ores, it is important that R is maintained at a level that allows suffi­ciently rapid leaching without excessive use of cyanide. The optimum value for R in a fixed leaching system would appear to lie between 3 and 4. This is based on the early observations that the leaching rate is very slow when R is below 3, with a rapid increase in the leaching rate above 3 (2, 3,4). The leaching rate increases gradually when R is greater than 4 (4). The major Cu(I)-cyanide complex in this range of R values is the [Cu(CN)J]2· species. It has been postulated that leaching occurs due to either uncomplexed cyanide or the fourth ligand in [Cu(CN)4]3·, since the stepwise formation constant for this complex is very small (2, 3). An additional consideration when leaching cupriferous ores is the oxidation of cyanide by Cu(II) minerals, resulting in the formation of cyanate. It has also been reported that both sulfide minerals (5) and activated carbon (6, 7) catalyse the oxidation of cyanide to cyanate. From the above discussion, it is important for the leaching con­ditions to be carefully controlled when treating pyritic and cuprifer­ous ores in order to achieve efficient and economically viable leach­ing. For example, large concentrations of thiocyanate in the leachate would reveal large cyanide losses and thus indicate the need for a pretreatment step to oxidize the sulfides. Alternatively, a low R value would indicate slow leaching kinetics and consequent low gold recoveries, indicating the need for increased cyanide dosage.

Mining legislation in Jamaica dates back to only 1947 when, on August 30 of that year the Minerals (Vesting) Act was promulgated. None of the exploratory and trial-mining projects over the preceding 450 years were regulated or controlled by law. It was the seriousness of the intent of the North American Aluminum Companies to establish a bauxite mining industry in Jamaica which led to the development of the first piece of mineral legislation. It is of note that the incoming mineral industrialist was more anxious than the Government to see that a legislative framework was in place. It was relevant then as it is today for good mining legislation to be in place for the Government to regulate and control the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources. It was also necessary for the industry to know their rights and obligations so that they could plan, explore and exploit with some assurance that their capital was secure. One of the main reasons that the mining of bauxite did not begin in Jamaica until 1952 was that no legislational framework existed prior to 1947. The Jamaican dollar is tied to the US Dollar at a rate of J$35.00 to US$1.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI) operates the Betze-Post openpit and the Meikle and Rodeo underground mines. Because the majority of the orebody is located below the water table, mining at BGMI requires a significant dewatering program. BGMI has a comprehensive dewatering and water management system that experienced a peak dewatering rate of 4,400 L/s in the mid 1990s. Changes to the hydrologic/hydrogeologic system caused by the mine dewatering have been monitored by an extensive network of groundwater monitoring wells and surface water monitoring stations, which cover about 1,550 km2. In addition to the monitoring program, a new tool, called Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), has also been used to enhance the evaluation of changes. Finally, a groundwater flow model has been developed that successfully simulates and predicts aquifer responses in the mine area and region. The well-calibrated flow model has served as a reliable tool to develop dewatering and mining plans, and project post-closure hydrologic conditions in the region. This paper introduces the BGMI dewatering and water management system and the means used by BGMI to evaluate and anticipate hydrologic responses in the region. The water management and analysis system has been and continues to be an integral part of managing ongoing operations, planning and pricing out future activities and evaluating the long-term effects of mine water handling.

Dust-related respiratory disease remains the major health concern in mining, and health agencies are proposing more stringent standards. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating techniques to continuously monitor respirable dust in real-time during the coal or ore extraction process. Continuous monitoring will allow mine operators to evaluate hazardous dust concentrations and adjust the operations to produce less dust. Mine instrumentation applications include machine-mounted and hand-held monitors, personal monitors, and area/environmental monitors. Six dust detection methods have been considered to meet application requirements. These are: light-scattering instruments, a smoke-particle detection technique, correlation of pressure drop across the collection filter with amount of dust deposited, the Tapered-Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) instrument, a method that relates the amount of dust collected on a filter with the vibration of the filter, and beta attenuation measurement of dust. Studies to date have identified the TEOM instrument and the technique of correlating the amount of dust collected with the vibration ofthe filter as having the most promise for success. Development of the machine-mounted monitor is the highest research priority. The application options and progress to date in developing continuous monitoring instrumentation are presented.

Petrographic properties of carbonate rocks are useful guides to the utilization of these rocks in SO2-scrubbing systems. High porosity and fineness of grain are thought to be the principal properties that contribute to high dissolution rates of the rocks in the scrubbing liquor. Lake marls and chalks are the major types of carbonate rocks that have these properties. Lake marls are composed mainly of equant grains of calcite (mean grain size generally less than 4 microns) weakly agglomerated in- to larger, porous particles. The marls commonly consist of 80 to 90 percent CaCo3 as calcite and aragonite. Impurities are, for the most part, quartz silt and organic matter. The average pore volume for samples of lake marls (1- to 1.2-mm particles) is about 0.50 cc/g, which corresponds to a porosity of about 57 percent. The mean size of pores in these marls is generally between 1 and 2 microns in diameter. Surface areas of lake marls range from 0.8 to 6.8 m2/g. Chalks have grain sizes and shapes similar to those of lake marls, but they generally have smaller amounts of quartz and organic matter and minor amounts of clay minerals. Pore volumes differ from one chalk formation to another; the 1- to 1. 2-mm particles average about 0.20 cc/g, which corresponds to a porosity of about 35 percent. The mean diameter of pores in chalks tested ranges from 0. 15 to 0.76 micron. Surface areas of chalks range from 3. 2 to 20. 1 m2/g. In the United States lake marls are restricted largely to Pleistocene- age sediments that occur in the states around the Great Lakes. Chalk and chalky limestones are restricted mainly to the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary strata in the Kansas-Nebraska-Colorado area and in the south- eastern states, from Texas to Florida. Results of laboratory tests of the relative dissolution rates of samples at pH 6 and 44°C indicate that, in addition to many lake marls and chalks, oolitic aragonite, pelecypod shells, and carbonate waste sludges from certain industrial plants also have high dissolution rates.

Two years ago, about the only US mining ventures that could turn even marginal profits were precious metals. In 1986, the price of gold dramatically increased, as did earnings from precious metals, mostly gold mines. First quarter results for 1987 show that gold will again be the most profitable type of mining in the US. All this money being made in gold resulted in many new mines being opened and hundreds of old workings being re-evaluated. The Society of Mining Engineers has put together a technical program to aid in developing precious metals mines. Small Mines Development in Precious Metals will take place Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 1987 at Bally's Hotel, Reno, NV. Topics at this meeting will include Problems Facing Small Miners; Understanding Geology and Ore Reserves; Mining-Production Options to Maintain Competitiveness; Processing for Precious Metals; Financing and Economics that Work for Small Miners; and Understanding the Environmental and Permit Maze. Problems facing the small miner The small miner has found and started most of the productive mines in the world, says Alfred G. Hoyl, of Coal Fuels Corp., Rollinsville, CO. Hoyl will state his case for small mines development in the opening session of the program. He will make the point that government regulations must never restrict the small mine or miner. And the mining industry must be careful not to crowd out the independent miner. "To restrict small mining is to say to our young men and women entering the mineral industry `There is no place for you as an independent.' Small is a relative term and we must never feel that starting small will restrict our possibilities of becoming big." In the same session, David J. Starbuck, Starbuck Minerals Management, Mayer, AZ will take a look at why smaller precious metals mines are profitable. Mining companies have changed their perspective on reworking previously mined properties. They are looking at abandoned properties in older mining districts. The attitude is that smaller operations in these districts can be profitable with the present economic climate, more advanced technology, and better management. Small, independent mining companies may not have the same resources to draw from as the majors. But there are affordable technologies available that fit into the independents' budget. Betty Gibbs, of Gibbs Associates, Boulder, Co will explain how a personal computer can help a small operation to analyze data more effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. Scenarios will be developed that will describe how PCs can be incorporated into all phases of an operation. Financial institutions are becoming more willing to consider venture capital for small precious metals mines, according to Stanley Dempsey, Denver Mining Finance Co., Denver, CO. This may be in the form of equity or debt, he says, but they want to receive assurances of the quality of the resource. And they will ask about the ore reserves. Next, the potential lender will want to know about the mining method and en¬vironmental regulations. Dempsey will discuss these requirements. Once a high grade gold mineralization is located and reserves proven, it must be evaluated to determine which recovery process is best suited for this deposit. Robert Martinez, Amselco Minerals, Ely, NV will evaluate processes for such a deposit located in Mexico. Heap leaching, vat leaching, and a carbon-in-pulp circuit are all viable options, he says. The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach is a relatively new method to study the mechanical behavior of rock masses. Recently, an SRM approach was established to estimate pillar strength from laboratory scale to in-situ dimension using the two-dimensional Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). In this study, the developed methodology is applied to the S-Pillar database to estimate pillar strength and failure mechanisms as a function of width-to-height ratio of the pillars. First, stone mine rocks are categorized into three as low-, medium-, and high-strength according to their uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). Later, laboratory-scale intact rocks are scaled-up to the average in-situ pillar dimensions by explicitly considering the naturally existing joint sets. It is found that the strength of the pillars with low-UCS are overestimated when compared to pillars with high-UCS. This observation is attributed to the high joint density of the pillars with high-UCS. After obtaining in-situ pillar strength, the width-to-height ratios of the pillar models varied from 0.5 to 2.0 to gain a robust understanding of pillar mechanical behavior. Tensile failure is found to govern the pillar behavior with the width-to-height ratio of 0.5 while the combination of tensile failure in rib elements and shear failure in the core

In the estimation of recoverable resources, geostatistical techniques such as Multiple Indicator Kriging require a change of support correction to derive theoretical recoveries based on an assumed level of mining selectivity. The change of support models most widely used in practice entail model based generalized corrections either on a global or local basis. Examples include the affine and indirect lognormal methods. Change of support corrections derived empirically through short-scale conditional simulation realizations often show notable differences compared with theoretical corrections determined using model variogram parameters. The existing changes of support models are reviewed and an alternative method is proposed.
