The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that can be used to mix computer-generated images of data with views of the real world. The University of Nottingham is developing AR technology in a major research project which can be used to assist mining companies in visualising complex mine data whilst out in the field. The technology comprises of integrated GPS surveying technology and electronic orientation devices to provide location and viewing information, video capture via digital camera and portable computing hardware to overlay 3D models on views of the real world. The paper describes the concepts of the technology in some detail and concentrates on the possible applications of this in the surface mining and exploration industries.

A ventilation system is described using dual aircourses: one zone occupied by working personnel, the other at the active working face. The two zones are separated by a partition or Shroud. The occupied zone to the rear of the face zone is ventilated adequately but with considerably less air because little gas, dust, or fumes are present. The face excavating zone is sealed and maintained at slightly more negative pressure preventing dust and gas generating from within to escape. Explosive mixtures within the face zone is rendered non-explosive by the introduction of inert gas therein. Each zone is vented separately to the outside of the mine. Because less total quantity of air is required for human breathing, etc, the total ventilation system can be drastically reduced in tan capacity, development entries, and air shafts, -- a great savings in costs.

This paper presents the excavation of the Roosevelt Island Valve Chamber, the final of three chambers in Stage One of New York City's Third Water Tunnel. The valve chamber and passageways 13 379.7 cu m (17 500 cu yd) are drilled and blasted. The rock is stabilized by grouted rock anchors. The 6.1 m (20 ft) diameter shaft is drilled, blasted, rock bolted and wire meshed for a depth of 70.7 m (232 ft). Then shaft excavation proceeds with immediate concrete lining for another 120.7 m (396 ft). Two 6.1m (20 ft) diameter manifolds are excavated using heading and bench. The raise drilling of eight 3.7 m (12 ft) diameter laterals occurs during lower shaft sinking.

INTRODUCTION Spent household dry cell batteries are frequently disposed of with metropolitan wastestream (MSW) in landfills where they can leak due to handling or aging. Frequent rain and sun cycles, especially in tropical environments, coupled to the action of leachate, dissolve their metal constituents which will eventually reach rivers, lakes and underground water. It is well known that some of these metals are fundamental to sustain life and that is why living organisms concentrate them through their metabolism, but it has been also recognized that beyond specific limits they can definitely be deleterious to the environment. In other words, high concentration of heavy metals are proven to cause chronic or acute diseases and toxic reactions, by acting on mammals' kidneys, liver and nervous system. In addition, some metals frequently used in household batteries, as mercury and cadmium, are said to be carcinogenic (Landis et al. 1995, Silva et al. 1988). Occasionally, plants to treat MSW are coupled to compost production. Household batteries present in MSW can be dragged into these plants, contaminating their products and eventually reaching vegetables making them not proper to consume by people and animals. Alternatively, batteries are also conveyed to incinerators and burned, throwing into the atmosphere volatile species. These can either act as contaminants as toxic vapor species or be delivered by winds and scavenged by rains contaminating soils and water far away from their source. In conclusion, despite the treatment applied to MSW, one can say that battery residues are potentially environmentally hazardous. The careful assessment of the environmental impact caused by residues of household batteries it is not an easy task and it can be referred as a multivariable problem. First, many different household batteries are produced by industry and the potential environmental hazard associated to their disposal depends primarily on the type of battery and manufacturer's technology. The required reclamation of land disturbed by surface coal mining often results in the creation of some oversteepened slopes that are prone to rapid erosion and sediment production. This natural activity on such slopes is not desirable nor allowed under current regulations. Experience has shown that novel approaches must be devised to address the problem. Research conducted on field sites in Missouri has indicated that construction, during the reclamation and grading processes, of a man-made drainage system will control the erosion. The drainage system must replicate or exceed the natural system in terms of drainage density and channel frequency. Basic design considerations are summarized in this paper, and field results are shown.

Numerous researchers worldwide have investigated the prediction of ground movements due to underground coal mining utilizing different analytical, empirical, and numerical models. These studies have primarily focused on the development of prediction methodologies for either flat or gently dipping seams under variable topography, and only a few studies are available that have investigated the prediction of ground movements over inclined seams. Although most inclined coal seams are in China, India, and other countries worldwide, a few inclined coal seams (with a dip of 10 degrees or greater) are also present in the US. Currently, the prediction of ground movements for inclined coal seams using empirical methods utilizes the same methodology for horizontal seams. It consists of dividing the inclined seam into horizontal segments, calculating deformations due to each segment, and superimposing the calculation results. This paper presents a new tool that provides a methodology for modeling subsidence under inclined seam conditions. Examples based on subsidence measurements available in the literature are presented. The goal is to implement this methodology into the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS).

Silver contained in zinc calcines undergoes several phase changes as it proceeds through the leaching circuit of a roast-leach-electrowin zinc plant. In this study, the flotation response of silver, from leach residues prepared under a variety of carefully controlled operating conditions in the pilot plant has been examined. Flotation of neutral leach residue is shown to be technically viable and to merit consideration for those plants without a high-acid leach circuit, but having significant silver values in the feed. Residue leach conditions must be kept slightly acidic to promote the formation of Ag2S, (AgCu) 2S and Ag2S rims on residual unroasted sphalerite, while simultaneously avoiding the hydrolysis of soluble iron, which depresses silver recovery and grade. Factors to be considered during integration of a flotation process into an electrolytic zinc plant are discussed.

Growing interest in pit crushing and conveying is evident from the many articles, technical papers, and new equipment development recently presented. Application of a pit crushing and conveying system is complex, as many factors such as mine design, production scheduling as well as initial and ongoing capital and operating costs must be thoroughly and realistically examined. This paper will address the fundamentals to be considered and review several approaches to developing a total system for a new and existing mine situation. The planning function will be outlined and operating and design criteria defined to interface the mining operation and the pit crushing conveying system.

Conventional underground mapping methods and diamond drilling are being applied in a study to determine the nature of the copper ore occurrences near the footwall of the Osceola lava flow top, commonly referred to as the Osceola Amygdaloid. Our work to date suggests that structures formed by relatively impermeable barriers, created by flowage and injection of still-molten lava from the interior of the flow into the solidified, brecciated crust, acted as the ore receptacles. Ascending hydrothermal fluids traveling near the footwall contact were trapped and confined in these barriers which retarded the direct upward movement of the ore fluids and caused deposition of copper. Oreshoots located near the footwall appear to have been formed spatially' independently from the hanging-wall oreshoots by fluids traveling simultaneously, but along different channelways. The barrier concept as advanced by earlier writers to explain the concentration of the ore-bearing, fluids into broad shoots con¬stituting entire ore bodies is found to be equally as applicable for the localization of smaller oreshoots within the Osceola ore body.

Concentrate flow rates were measured for the flotation of -100-mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer-controlled 0.076 x 3.5-m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height, airflow and solid feed rates. The specific projected surface areas of the feed, concentrate and tailing streams were determined from the measured particle size distributions. The results obtained show that the concen¬trate flow rate was independent of recovery zone height but was dependent on the hydrostatic pressure setting (measure of froth depth), gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of bubble surface area flux and the specific particle projected surface area.

This study examines the problems involved with the control of characteristics of the products resulting from comminution operations. A methodology of investigation based on texture analysis procedures by image processing techniques of the comminution product is proposed. Some examples of applications are considered with particular reference to comminution products of different textural, structural and mechanical characteristics. The advantages and the limites of this method of approach are, indicated, both as regards performance of the investigations and subsequent processing of results.

The feasibility of exploiting a mineral deposit by developing a surface mine is closely related to the environmental protection and land reclamation costs. This issue has utmost importance for West Macedonia Lignite Centre (WMLC) of Greece, where there is still a lot of interest for opening of new mines and for further development of the existing open-pits. The decision-making process in these cases can be based on a decision tree that takes into consideration the various cost components of environmental management, the alternative solutions, the environmental permits and the cost reports of environmental management actions carried out so far. Moreover, the mine planning procedure is affected indirectly by numerous uncertain environmental and socioeconomic parameters, such as the delays caused by the bureaucratic procedures and the settlement of arguments in the Court.

With new lightweight designs, spirals have become standard equipment in coal preparation plants worldwide. To their credit, spirals typically show very low coal losses to the refuse stream under most operating conditions. However, spirals do tend to separate at cut points in excess of 1.80 S.G. Attempts to obtain lower cut points have typically resulted in coal losses to middlings. Middlings retreatment with secondary spirals is therefore becoming common place. Other forms of retreatment with water-only cyclones, hydrosizers, and recirculation have been attempted with some success. This paper reports on a novel (Patent Applied For) approach to retreating spiral middlings m a heavy-media-cyclone circuit.

A new method of pillar stability evaluation was proposed. The unique feature about the method is that it estimates two types of stability factors for the pillar. The first stability factor is to measure how much the applied stress at that point is smaller than its strength, and the second stability factor is to predict whether or not the pillar will fail violently. The strain-softening behavior of coal pillars was simulated by the Drucker-Prager yield criterion. A new algorithm that simulates the strain-hardening behavior of the gob was used. A numerical technique to estimate the local mine stiffness (LMS) was introduced and verified by both numerical and analytical methods. A case of massive pillar failure in a room-and-pillar mine was used to define the stability limits for the proposed method.

Many systems which are modelled mathematically result in a model where the relationships between some or all of the parameters are found to be non-linear. These systems are usually complicated further by a desire to make the system achieve multiple and often conflicting objectives or goals simultaneously. Rozwadowski (1970) developed a model to describe the total discounted net profit of a mine as a function of the amount of ore developed and of the grade of the amount of ore mined. Dynamic programming was used to determine the policy which gave the maximum net present value. In this paper it is shown that the relationships between the variables can be approximated by piecewise linear functions. This is amenable to solution by an algorithm based on the simplex algorithm of linear programming. The goals of maximizing the net present value, the total net profit and the total gold output are incorporated simultaneously into a goal programming formulation of the system. The resulting model is characterized by a large number of disconnected constraints. These are decomposed into several smaller problems and the problem solved. The solution is examined to discover the sensitivity of the system to changes in certain parameters. In particular the interaction between the three goals is analysed to determine whether there is conflict between any of the goals and, if so, what the trade-offs between the conflicting goals are.

The main goal of this paper is to present readers with recommendations for choosing coaxial cables appropriate for mining applications of Time Domain Ref 1 ectometry (TDR) to monitor rock mass movements. Prior to discussing the recommendations, mining applications are illustrated with examples and the operating principle of TDR is discussed briefly. Items that affect the result of the monitoring system performance include the coaxial cable selected, the grouting material used, and the installation procedure.

Henderson Mine has been transporting molybdenum ore using a rail haulage system for the past 21 years. Due to the age of this system, limited performance, and obsolescence, a capital investment decision was imminent. Henderson used this opportunity to evaluate other transportation methods and continuously improve their mining practices. These efforts resulted in a new mine plan for Henderson, which ensures that Henderson will continue to supply high quality molybdenum into the 21st century. This paper will discuss the dramatic changes taking place at the Henderson Mine as a new production level is mined. These changes include the installation of an underground crushing, conveying, and truck haulage system, as well as increasing the scale of the panel caving process. Each of these topics will be discussed, as will their rock mechanics and material flow implications.

This project was developed at the PCS Phosphate Mine in Aurora, NC. This site includes a surface mining operation, beneficiation plant and chemical processing facility located in the coastal plain of eastern North Carolina. The phosphate ore being mined at this operation is a 10 to 12 meter (35 to 40 foot) thick colloidal deposit located approximately 30 meters (100 feet) below the ground surface. The ore is pumped to the beneficiation facility where it is separated into clay, sand and concentrate streams. The concentrate product is utilized at the chemical plants to produce a wide range of products including fertilizer, industrial phosphates and animal feed products. The Cyclone Dike Builder (CDB) project developed a technique for dewatering the beneficiation tailing sand stream and providing innovative placement for dike construction. Future material balance requirements at the PCS Phosphate mine required an improvement in tailing sand placement technique to accomplish strategic objectives. The water volume of the sand slurry forces significant quantities of sand out of the dike profile during deposition. PCS Phosphate and MetPro Supply of Florida developed a mobile high-density hydro-cyclone station to remove most of the water and significantly increase the density of the sand being placed for dike construction. This high-density sand slurry is then effectively controlled using minimal heavy equipment operation.

With an ongoing concern for safety and health in the workplace, NYCO® requested three medical evaluations be undertaken to study possible health hazards of wollastonite. Two of the evaluations were conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). One was in 1976 (Ref. 1), and the second in 1982 (Ref. 2). The aim of the two studies was to answer the following two questions: 1. Do wollastonite workers exhibit more respiratory abnormalities than workers not exposed to wollastonite? 2. Is there a relationship between prevalence of respiratory abnormalities and accumulated expo-sure time to wollastonite?
