INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. To date, human space exploration has been almost completely dependent on the use of resources carried with astronauts and cosmonauts from the surface of the Earth. The only exception to this has been the harvesting of solar energy to power space stations like Skylab, Salyut and Mir for long-duration missions. This dependence on materials which must be transported into orbit at costs in excess of $5000 per pound is the fundamental limiting factor in space exploration and operations. It is likely that launch costs can eventually be greatly reduced by means of such innovations as true single stage to orbit vehicles, aerospace planes, or serial electromagnetic or laser launch systems. However, the Earth will always remain an expensive source of materials for space construction and for basic commodities such as propellant and life support liquids and gasses. Fortunately, abundant sources of materials exist which are already in space, outside of the Earth's deep gravity well.

A process has been developed to recover gold and copper from two waste materials at the Bougainville Copper Limited mine in Papua New Guinea. It involves the bioleaching, in reactors, of a pyrite concentrate to liberate refractory gold and generate sulphuric acid, ferric sulphate and biomass for bacterial leaching of a chalcopyritic waste rock dump. Gold is to be recovered by cyanide leaching and copper by solvent extraction/electrowinning. The reactor bioleaching was developed in continuously operated reactors of 1 m3 capacity by CRA Advanced Technical Development at Cockle Creek, while the dump leaching was developed in 750 kg columns on site at Bougainville Copper Limited. The process was to be piloted on site.

Resource figures for bentonite clays are generally based on stratigraphic, sedimentary geologic data and drilling and sampling. Estimates of bentonite resources and/or reserves commonly found in the literature report on bentonite occurrences in specific localities or areas but none on any documented comprehensive estimates of bentonite resources. From 1974 thru 1977 the Bureau of Land Management conducted extensive studies of the resources of commercial grade bentonite in the three state region. These investigations consisted of: 1. Stratigraphic and geologic sampling with supplemental drilling data, followed by geostatistical analysis. 2. Data compiled from a systematic search of county and state records on mining locations, leases and acreage filed for bentonite. Estimates of resources of commercial grade bentonite using industry parameters were calculated from these data sources. It is concluded that there exists from 1.5 to 2.4 billion tons of in-place bentonite in Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota. Assuming a 5 percent annual growth rate for the industry, this would indicate a life of 62 to 73 years.

Sand-and-gravel aggregates have become the number-one, nonmetallic-mineral resource in the world. Surficial aggregate deposits of economic size are becoming increasingly rare in most parts of Canada. In southern Saskatchewan, this is especially true, and detection and delineation of intertill sand-and-gravel deposits with airborne electromagnetic (EM) surveys have proven very successful. Airborne and ground geophysical surveys detect such deposits by their resistivity contrast relative to the surrounding clay-rich soils. Dighem helicopter-borne electromagnetic surveys map soil variations over a large area quickly and cost effectively, greatly reducing the cost of detecting and mapping deposits compared with traditional methods (air-photo interpretation, ground EM, and drilling.). The multiple-frequency EM system used by Dighem can map variations both horizontally and vertically. Magnetic data collected simultaneously are useful in mapping bedrock geology. Both resistivity and bedrock maps aid in the important task of reducing drilling costs and person-hours in the field. The results of the survey are presented as maps of ground resistivity, which are relatively easy to interpret. These maps are produced in the field at the time of the survey, making quick follow-up of the survey possible. Airborne EM surveys can map the extent and depth of aggregate deposits more effectively than is practical from the ground. Since aggregate deposits can vary tremendously in a very short distance (<300 m) large-area EM maps can show both local area variability and also help develop intertill trends. A test survey for the Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation Department over a 3-km by 5-km area mapped all the known deposits as well as some unknown deposits, subsequently proven by drilling. The test-survey data show that the method not only detected the deposits, but also gave an estimate of the shape (volume) of each of the deposits. Comparison of the data to drill sections shows excellent correlation. Theoretical modelling demonstrates that the multifrequency system can discriminate sand and gravel from bedrock ridges. Since the successful test work, about 725 km2 of ground have been surveyed, resulting in the discovery of four new deposits, which can be used immediately, resulting in significant savings for the Saskatchewan government and taxpayer.

"During the past decade, column flotation cells have become widely accepted for upgrading ultrafine sulfide ores. However, the use of columns has been widely relegated to cleaner circuits due to their comparatively high selectivity derived from the use of wash water dispersed over a deep froth. High tonnage rates and low feed grades make using column technology in roughing and scavenger stages challenging due to the resulting size of the needed equipment. To specifically address this challenge, a new high-intensity flotation system known as the StackCell™ was developed. This technology makes use of a novel pre-aeration method coupled with froth washing to simultaneously provide improved flotation kinetics and selectivity. The novel aeration system provides efficient bubble-particle contacting thereby shortening the residence time required for particle collection. This article reviews the technical design features of this new flotation technology and presents recent data from in-plant pilot testing in a copper-sulfide application. INTRODUCTION Column flotation cells have become very popular in the minerals processing industry for cleaner circuits due to their ability to produce a high-grade froth concentrate via the use of froth washing (Luttrell et al., 1999; Kohmuench et al., 2004). The use of wash water minimizes the nonselective recovery of ultrafine impurities that are normally entrained into the froth product from conventional flotation machines. On the other hand, the unique design of a column cell typically requires a large tank volume. Column cells must be tall to ensure that the pulp residence time is long enough to offset their inherently slow flotation kinetics and to minimize internal mixing that is detrimental to overall cell performance. The tall design minimizes the total floor space required for the column installation, but substantially increases the foundation load. The large size of the column tank can also create issues during fabrication, transportation and installation. To address these concerns, the engineering team at Eriez Manufacturing developed a next-generation flotation technology called the StackCell?. This high-intensity flotation machine was designed to provide column-like separation performance within a very compact volumetric footprint. This article describes the key working features of this new technology and provides data from recent pilot-scale tests conducted in gold and copper-sulfide applications"

Research on roof bolting has developed significant information with respect to the functions that can be performed by properly installed bolts and the methods that can be used to ensure that effective installation has been achieved. The present paper brings together results that are pertinent to the design of a bolting system for reinforcing horizontally stratified mine roof with vertical bolts. The design approach is based on the use of bolts to decrease the maximum bending stress within an arbitrary sequence of roof strata (such as shown by figure 1) in which the only loads are the weights of the individual beds. The use of rock bolts to achieve other objectives, such as to stabilize a fractured rock mass on the periphery of a mine opening (3), is excluded from consideration herein.

An overview presentation of the fast-track start up of Cerro Colorado, a new copper heap leach project in Chile&apos;s Atacama&apos; desert. A brief explanation &apos;of location of the property, exploration history, geol-ogy, reserves and development are presented. The overview includes mining, crushing, agglomeration, and the solvent extraction-electrowinning recovery process. Challenges and requirements specific to heap leach systems will be addressed and analyzed. A detailed description will be given of the mobile heap leach conveying and stacking systems used in the building of heaps for on-and off-pad operations.

Up to now, the leaching of manganese carbonate ore is usually performed at high temperature of 363K and the leaching rate is lower than 90%. Although in laboratory test, the leaching rate is only 90%. This paper introduced an improved method for leaching of manganese carbonate ore. Certain ammonium salt was added to the pulp to raise the solubility of Mn2+ and reduce the adsorption quantity of Mn2+ on the ore surface. Experimental results show that a leaching rate over 95% can be obtained at the temperature >273K. The activation energy is calculated to be 7.15 KJ/mol and is lower than that of normal leaching technique. The effects of the parameters, such as particle size, pulp density and initial acid concentration on the process results are investigated. A leaching rate higher than 95% can be obtained under the following conditions: particle size below 0.25mm, leaching time 60 min, stirring speed higher than 960 r.pm. H2SO4:MnCO3>1 .2, pulp density 105-205 g.L-l. A kinetic model was deduced, verifying with actual experiments. It showed that the model can describe the leaching process successfully.

Two hundred years ago next April, our forebears embarked upon the difficult path to national independence. They succeeded, and shook off the yoke of foreign domination. In the ensuing two centuries, the country was mobilized several times to protect that political and economic independence from foreign domination. These efforts were also successful. Thus, as we stand here on the threshold of our third century of political independence, we can thank previous generations and congratulate ourselves for establishing and maintaining the world&apos;s oldest republic. Now -- once again -- the United States faces the challenge of foreign intervention into our economy. This time the battleground is resource avail- ability. America has been blessed with enormous resources. Whether we speak of minerals or timber or water or "amber waves of grain," this nation has benefitted from a resource base that is the envy of the world. This asset, coupled with a political system that permitted us to develop it, has been the physical backbone of our independence. Without the economic independence that this resource base has given us, the political independence we fought for would have been tenuous, at best.

Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. Process development is one of the principal tasks required in the course of turning an exploration discovery into a mine. Exploration geologists should have an understanding of the more important metallurgical processes and the test work required for each process. The paper discusses the important metallurgical processes, the test work and sample requirements for each, and the costs and time requirements to accomplish the testing. The limitations of reverse circulation drill samples for metallurgical testing are discussed. The level of process definition required to support engineering studies: scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies are also described.

Acrylic polymers have been found to be effective dispersants and stabilizers in a wide variety of mineral processing applications including rheology control in concentrated slurries. This paper will describe these low molecular weight, water-soluble polymeric dispersants and provide a basis for how they function in concentrated slurries based on computer molecular modeling and applications results. Data on homopolymers as well as copolymers of acrylic acid will be presented to demonstrate the optimization of a polymeric dispersant in preparing high solids slurries of inorganic materials such as kaolin, calcium carbonate, lime, and magnesium hydroxide.

Exploration is the systematically financed and technically oriented search for mineral wealth. Almost all established mining companies have an exploration department. The size of a company&apos;s search varies over the years as the company&apos;s profits, or the corporate philosophy change. While the established mining companies have exploration departments, they are also alert to acquiring discoveries made by others -- especially by prospectors and small companies without the resources to develop their find. The emphasis in some large companies stresses self-generated discoveries while others rely heavily on acquisitions; again, over the years the emphasis may alternate. In the last analysis, essentially all new mineral wealth was found through someone&apos;s exploration effort. Before we discuss how exploration is financed, it will be informative to analyze how discoveries have been made and by whom. Recently, the author conducted a survey of randomly selected major mining companies to answer these questions. Most companies responded and many went to considerable effort to give complete and detailed answers. I thank all for their help and cooperation. The questionnaire is attached as Appendix I. Appendix II is a list of the 400 companies that replied in a complete enough manner and format to be analyzed here. The results of the questionnaire are given in Table 1. Introduction Loss prevention programs have become absolutely necessary at any precious metals producing property. In the past eight years, one security company, specializing in precious metals mine, mill, and refinery security, has been involved in investigations at gold and silver properties that have resulted in 62 criminal convictions. Of those, all but five were employees, former employees, contract employees, or vendors for the company. Several of the cases involved losses of more than $1 million. The largest number of employees prosecuted from one investigation was 17. A recent case resulted in 12 criminal prosecutions and, several years ago, one involved an additional 12 criminal prosecutions. The most serious theft problem facing precious metals mines is employee theft. Is is estimated that 95% of the dollar losses from precious metals thefts can be attributed to employees. This does not mean there is no robbery or burglary exposure. There have been successful robberies, burglaries, and extortion cases. Most mining companies, though, provide better protection against external theft than from internal theft. That is one reason employee theft has reached epidemic proportions. Any product can be stolen No product is immune to theft. Precious metals investigations have involved the theft of high grade ore, dore, bullion, concentrates, precipitates, loaded steel wool, loaded carbon, and sump cleanup. Over a period of several years, this author&apos;s security agency has documented the theft of more than 22.5 t (25 st) of load carbon. Most mining companies do not protect the number one adsorption tank or the loaded carbon screens, which frequently leads to losses. Precipitates, electrowinning tank sludge, sump material, and concentrates are usually afforded lit¬tle protection because mine management believes it is too difficult to process. There are custom mills throughout the United States that will process any form of precious metals with no questions asked. This has become a particular problem since the certificate of ownership requirement has been eliminated by most states. Due to the large number of gold mines coming on line, many mine managers are being recruited from base metal mines, where primary security problems involve the theft of tools and company property. These managers do not understand the unique security problems associated with precious metals production. Consequently, they usually forego many security needs in the interest of economy. Unfortunately, numerous cases are on file where mining companies have suffered large losses because their physical security and their security procedures were not adequately addressed when the property was in its planning stages. This paper describes a two-part program funded by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research and performed by Jacobs. The first part of the program was to examine the application of ultrasonic treatment to clean phosphate particle surfaces. Florida phosphate pebble and rougher flotation feeds were treated in an ultrasonic trough to remove clays. Also, the de-oiling of rougher concentrates by ultrasonic treatment was tested. In order to improve the clay removal efficiency, viscosities of primary cyclone overflow from six beneficiation plants were studied in the second part of the program. Viscosities for different samples at the same clay % solids vary significantly, and increase exponentially with clay % solids content for the same sample. A method of controlling cyclone operation using on-line viscosity measurements and pump box level sensors is proposed to logically improve primary cyclone performance.

During the dry screening, the hole plugging is a serious problem for most traditional screening equipment sieving the moist fine coal. It would lead to the low preparation efficiency and the low screening efficiency. The flip-flow screen is a new kind of screening equipment by using flip-flow motion of elastic screen surfaces to implement the separation of material. With the remarkable advantages of the extraordinary vibration intensity of screen surface, the hole is difficult to be plugged, and the screening efficiency is improved. In this paper, a kind of centralized forced flip-flow screen (CFFS) was proposed based on the crank rocker mechanism. The flip-flow motion of elastic screen surfaces is achieved by the periodical reversed motion of inner and outer screen boxes driven by crank. The advantages of the CFFS include considerable deformation of the screen surface, stable flip-flow quantity, low working noise, low vibration influence on environment, etc. The principle and construction of the CFFS were introduced, and the modal analysis and harmonic response analysis of key components (the crank and the linkage) were implemented based on finite element method (FEM), respectively. The first six orders of natural frequency and vibration modes were obtained. The maximum equivalent stress and strain under working and resonance frequency were achieved. The results illustrate that the resonance frequency is much higher than the working frequency, and the stress and strain are all within the safe limit of the material. The prototype was manufactured, and the sieving experiment demonstrates that the CFFS perform steadily, and screening efficiency is over 80%. The new feasible method of the dry screening was proposed by the CFFS. The corresponding numerical simulation and the experiment provided a reliable basis for the future promotion of similar product design and research.

The question "what constituents should be determined?" is one that defies a simple answer, because earth scientist being what you are, the rock and mineral analyst will eventually be called upon to determine about three quarters of the elements in the periodic table. The concentrations of these analyses will range from as low as 1 ppb to 100% of the material being analyzed. The most important thing to remember about a quantitative analytical result is that it can only be an estimate of the concentration of the analyte present. A measure of the reliability of that estimate is given by statistically derived statements of the precision and accuracy of the measurement. When evaluating your data an understanding of precision and accuracy are of paramount importance. Precision is the measure of agreement between replicate values while the accuracy of a determination is the concordance between it and the true value. There is no quarantee, however, that a precise answer is an accurate one. The numerical difference between the two values is the error. When evaluating your data, the repeats analyzed with your samples will identify the precision and control standards of U.S.G.S. or Canadian Certified Materials quality will identify the accuracy. The main problem is this data is routinely withheld from the report, or was it ever included in the analysis of your samples?

In any filtration, it is primarily the filter medium (cloth) and cake filtering properties that control the type of filtration equipment used and filtration conditions. The advent of new types of filter cloths, such as the membrane cloth discussed in this paper, can result in significant changes in filtration techniques and areas of application for filtration. For many suspensions, for instance, conventional filtration is uneconomic compared to gravity separation or not filtering at all (as with product recovery from dilute streams) because the solids are very fine, are hard to retain and build up filter pressure rapidly, and once retained are hard to remove. As a result of the developments discussed here, this is no longer the case. This technique and the use of the membrane filter cloth is well established. This filtration is currently being used for white liquor filtration in twenty-four mills worldwide in the chemical recovery step of the kraft process for producing paper pulp where it is replacing gravity thickeners in new plants. Filters up to 1000 sq. ft. (100 sq. meters) are filtering large volumes of solids from hot caustic solutions. The filtration materials and techniques discussed in this paper open the way to new methods and applications for filtration in the mining industry. It is not the intention of this paper to give a vigorous analysis of the different separations, but to outline some of the ways in which this filtration technique might be used in the mining industry.
