The adsorption process, density and structural property of the oleate layer adsorbed onto a hydroxyapatite (HAP) surface at six different concentrations and three pHs (pH 8, 9 and 10) have been studied using the technique of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The present study demonstrated the versatility and accuracy of the QCM-D for surface adsorption characterization. The real-time measurements of frequency and dissipation shifts with a hydroxyapatite-coated sensor revealed changes in the hydroxyapatite surface during the entire adsorption process. Chemisorption and surface precipitation of sodium oleate were also observed on the surface of hydroxyapatite through the use of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). Chemisorption dominated at low concentrations and high pH values and formed a rigid and thin adsorption layer. Surface precipitation of calcium oleate and micelles dominated at concentrations higher than critical micelle concentration (CMC) and lower pHs and formed a thick but dissipated adsorption layer with a high hydration level. Three distinct adsorption behaviors were identified from the different slopes of ?D-?f plots. The adsorption density was less than a monolayer at concentrations <0.164 mM, but increased significantly at concentrations higher than 0.821 mM at all three pHs. The critical concentration at pH 8 was 0.33 mM, which was lower than at pH 9 (0.821 mM) and pH 10 (3.3 mM).

The single most unique design feature of the Centralia Coal Mine is the public information program. Just what the heck does public information have to do with the development of a coal mine? The utilities of today have had to build larger and larger plants to keep down the costs of power to the consumer. The large plants require huge amounts of capital, take up large areas of real estate, consume unprecedented amounts of coal, and generate large quantities of waste products which have to be reckoned with. Coal mines supplying these plants have also increased in size and production to meet the power plants&apos; unending appetite for coal. This means the disturbance of great areas of land and significant alterations to the landscape. Today&apos;s public is greatly concerned about the environment in which he is living. The great size of a power plant with its large stacks, coal piles, and the coal mine with its large earth movers, disturbed acreages and the resulting waste products of both operations appears to present a threat to his environment. Because of this,&apos; many power plants and coal mines are having public acceptance problems. This has resulted in the passage of stringent legislation and in some cases brought upon construction delays for major power plants.

Golder Moffitt and Associates (GMA)", were commissioned to reassess a large metallic low grade orebody. One of the aims of the study was to estimate recoverable reserves. Recoverable reserves are here defined as ore reserves for a specific mining block size. The mining block is that block on which the decision that the material is ore or waste is made. Recoverable reserves take into consideration mining methods. New methods for solving this type of problem were recently developed in Geostatistics and so for this reason GMA called for the technical assistance of the Centre de Geostatistique (C.G). The complete estimation was done using the geostatistical techniques and programs of the C.G together with some of the programs of GMA. As the mine was in production at the time the study commenced it was-possible to make frequent checks on the estimated values using blast-hole data. The ore reserves were also estimated using the more conventional interpolation method of inverse square of distance weighting.

INTRODUCTION In most cases, the design of an underground mine is based upon the premise that the ground either will cave or will be stable. This chapter concerns the design of a mine in ground that will cave readily or with some as¬sistance, such as by long-hole drilling and blasting. Some of the more widely used caving systems of mining are panel caving, block caving, sublevel caving, and large pillar recovery. Some of the less widely used systems are glory-hole, top slicing, and induction caving. Al¬though the common practice of pillar robbing is not usually considered to be a caving system, this subject will be treated as a part of this chapter. BASICS OF CAVING Caving systems are most successful in ground that will cave in sizes that will flow through openings and grizzlies, and will easily load in cars or on belts for haul¬age. The ground most likely to cave well is highly frac¬tured and contains breaks, flaws, or other discontinui¬ties that form planes of weakness. Also, caving action can be greatly enhanced if the host rock itself is low in compressive, shear, and tensile strength. Ideally, a cav¬ing system of mining is best employed when the criteria for caving is a feature of the ore body and the develop¬ment drifts, haulageways, and drawpoints can be mined in a highly competent rock beneath the mineralized zone. However, the development is often in the same, or similar, fractured rock and the openings require sub¬stantial artificial support to assure stability. Several clues can be assembled to identify potential caving ground; however, for borderline cases, no sure method has been devised to date. The diamond-drill cores taken for exploration can provide an excellent clue provided drilling is performed carefully by experienced drillers. For example, if the ground is cored in such a manner that the breaks in the core are caused more by failure of the rock than by whipping core barrels, plugged drill bits, or other drilling causes, and the intact core lengths are consistently long [say, 0.6 to 3 m (2 to 10 ft) of unbroken core], there is little reason to believe the ground will cave without considerable as¬sistance. This is especially true for rocks with compres¬sive strengths above 34.5 MPa (5000 psi) and tensile strengths above 2.1 MPa (300 psi). On the other hand, if core recovery is low (below 80%) and the recovered ore is broken in small pieces and the breaks are along obvious weaknesses in the rock, the chances are excel¬lent that the ground will cave. This is true even when the rock between the defects has high compressive and tensile strength. Another clue has already been mentioned, that is, the measurement of the physical properties of the rock and the natural planes of weakness or defects in the rock. The planes of weakness in the rock can often be detected from outcrops, cores, or other exposures of the rock under consideration. Some rock types are known to be strong and will sustain large, unsupported open¬ings and would be difficult to cave intentionally. Yet the same rock type can also contain unbonded or weak planes of weakness or fractures, and in these locations the rock would undoubtedly cave with little assistance. Therefore, although the inherent strength of the rock is a factor in caving, the natural defects in the rock are more often the deciding factor. DESIGN CONCEPTS For the most part, the design of openings for caving ground is a problem of the interaction of openings over a relatively large area of the mine. To illustrate, Fig. 1 is a simplified section of a series of openings along the grizzly level or draw level of a block caving or panel caving development, and above this opening is a simpli¬fied section of a room-and-pillar arrangement on the undercut level. At this stage of the development, the stresses around the openings on the grizzly level are only moderately influenced by the openings on the undercut level and vice versa. Therefore, the stresses around the openings are approximated by the stresses around single or multiple openings in rock, the values of which are de¬scribed in the literature (Obert, Duvall, and Merrill, 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). Once the pillars on the undercut level are blasted (Fig. 2), the situation changes abruptly. The undercut opening (prior to caving) now can be approximated as an ovaloidal opening above the grizzly drifts and this opening tends to shield the vertical stress field. As the caved stage is drawn the stope approximates a much larger rectangular or square opening filled with rock, and if the rock is not sustaining a major portion of the stress field, this opening can be considered (for en¬gineering purposes) to be empty and the stresses that interact between the larger and the smaller openings take on a totally new perspective (see Fig. 3). Next, let the material cave to the surface, and let the caving ma¬terial sustain some stress, but much less than if the ma¬terial were intact. This condition is similar to a soft inclusion in a rigid body and has been treated in the literature (for example, Donnell, 1941). Aside from a lower cost than for other treatment agents, limestone has the advantages of easy storage and effectiveness even when impure and in slack sizes. Limestone incorporated into waste piles in layers or as riprap can inhibit acid formation; limestone rubble packed in a mine entry offers promise in formation of a low-cost autogenous resilient seal.

Electronic ore sorting is a coarse particle beneliciating process which performs a function which in the past was primarily achieved through the use of hand picking belts. Photometric ore sorting is capable of separating waste from mineral bearing rock having a distinct difference in surface light reflectance levels. This type of ore sorter can be applied to gold and silver ores which are contained in quartz veining. Photometric ore sorting has been used at gold mines in South Africa as well as the Black Pinc silver mine in Montana. A new ore sorter has recently been developed with precious metal ores in mind. This ore sorter is capable of sorting ores on both photometric and conductivity sensing parameters. The first production machine has been installed at a gold mine near Beardmore, Ontario and currently is being used to process low grade waste dumps.

New and improved beneficiation techniques are available to allow the production of clay minerals of exceptionally high purity. This is particularly true for kaolins and smectites. Wet processing techniques include particle size separation, high intensity magnetic separation, chemical leaching ,flotation, and selective flocculation. The blending of clay minerals with other minerals provides opportunities to make special ceramic materials such as cordierite and other minerals that have very special ceramic properties including low heat expansion, high fired strength, low absorption, and other desired qualities.

ABSTRACT Lateritic bauxite deposits of economic size and grade in Sierra Leone occur on granulites of the Kasila series. The high grade trihydrate ores of Mokanji are exploited by SIEROMCO since 1964. Remaining reserves are small (2 million tons) and operation moved over to the Gondama deposits of similar grade. Port Loko bauxite reserves are estimated at 100 million tons and are of relatively lower grade. It is planned to treat this ore locally into alumina. Guinea&apos;s bauxite reserves exceed those of any other nation. They occur as hard lateritic bauxite covers on plateaus of the Pre-Cambrian sedimentary formations and on doleritic intrusions. The genesis is still controversial. The Sangaredi mine has produced high grade ore for the last 10 years. Friguia exploits a relatively lower grade ore at a rate of about 2 million tpy to be treated in their local alumina plant. Kindia ore is mined at a yearly rate of 2,5 million tons since 1974. Untouched reserves at Ayékoyé and Tougué/Dabola are estimated at 6,000 million tons.

INTRODUCTION Development work at Carr Fork Mine of Anaconda Copper Company in Tooele, Utah commenced in August 1974. A decision to install an underground gyratory crusher for primary crushing run-of-mine ore and waste was made in 1976. Higher throughput rates, larger reduction ratios and greater flexibility in terms of meeting immediate and expanded production needs were the main reasons for selecting the gyratory crusher over the jaw crusher. UNDERGROUND MATERIALS HANDLING Underground crushing and conveying system was designed for a capacity of 16,300 mtpd of ore and waste on a 2-shift, 5-day week basis. Engineering and design of crusher complex was performed by Anaconda engineers at Carr Fork. Figure 1 represents the longitudinal section of mine showing the general materials handling system. Mine area is trackless except for materials and production haulage which is run on rail track on both 1200 and 970 levels. Ore from stopes and waste rock from development headings are handled by 3.8 cu m (5 cu yd) Jarco scoops and dumped into 2.4 m (8 ft) diameter ore and waste passes at the 1200 level. The material gravitates down to the 970 level where it is loaded into 12 cu m (420 cu ft) ASEA mine cars using side loading chutes. The CANMET diesel-related work, carried out in cooperation with the Canadian mining industry, resulted in the identification of several useful R/D studies. One such study was the development of a dash-mounted alarm signal system to indicate overexposure of production LHD diesel vehicle operators to toxic contaminants in a mine environment. The resulting instrument has been called the [CO2 Exposure Meter]. This meter is particularly applicable to LHD machines because previous investigations have indicated that operators of LHDs and some haulage truck drivers are exposed to up to 200% of the contaminant concentrations measured in the general mine return air. This paper describes the development of the system which continuously monitors and displays the operator&apos;s exposure to diesel pollutants, and indicates an overexposure by an alarm light. The overexposure limits are preset by mine personnel based on carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements, which in turn are related to simultaneous spot respirable combustible dust (RCD) measurements (or to Air Quality Indices - AQI, if available). The CO2 settings are, in general, related to the engine/exhaust treatment selections, vehicle duty cycle and local ventilation rates and efficiency. The system continuously displays one of three lights: green for underexposure, yellow for caution, and red for overexposure. Overexposure can occur for several reasons, such as: reduced ventilation, malfunction of the diesel vehicle, and excessive airborne contaminants. The paper confirms satisfactory operation of the system in a laboratory-simulated mine environment, as well as in field trials.

The complexation of Alizarin Red S (ARS) at the surface of hydrous fluorapatite particles has been investigated at 25.0 C by means of potentiometric titrations, adsorption experiments in 0.1 M NaCI ionic medium, and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) studies. A chemical model describing the reaction at the aqueous mineral surface has been established under equilibrium conditions according to the reaction [== -CaOH2 + HA2 - « _ =PO CaA2 - z + H30&apos;; to (int.) = -5.61 ± 0.02 3 a =PO- logBs-1110(int.) ( ) within the range 8.40 <_ -log[H ] <_ 9.80.] Experimental data were evaluated using the computer program FITEQL on the basis of a constant capacitance model for the electric double layer. The surface complex structure, has been proposed to involve the quinoid and alpha phenolic oxygens of ARS coordinated to the calcium sites on the fluorapatite surface.

Statistical exploration uses statistical methods to identify targets for more detailed investigation by estimating the odds of occurrence of mineral deposits. The study area which contains the possible targets may be as large as 1 000 000 km2 or as small as 100 km2. Results are presented in terms of a probability index for the existence of a deposit or, more precisely, in terms of expected dollar value for a unit area, or even in terms of number, size, and grade of deposits remaining to be discovered. Typically, selected geological, geophysical, or geochemical information is systematically quantified and statistically analyzed by using the computer in order to distinguish between geological environments on the basis of the probability that they contain undiscovered deposits of a specific type. All possible targets are compared with one another by using information on areas known to contain deposits. The information on the known areas is either a set of control data consisting of values for the same parameters as are quantified for the entire study area, or it embodies a specific model for the occurrence of a given deposit type. Examples of both procedures will be discussed in this chapter.

Mooranbah North is a new greenfield project in Australia&apos;s Bowen Basin that is projected to produce 4 mtpa of hard coking coal from a single longwall. Located in Central Queensland in Australia&apos;s northeast, this is one of Australia&apos;s main coal producing regions. From the outset, Mooranbah North&apos;s approach to equipment selection has differed markedly from that usually taken in the mining industry, and the conveyor industry in particular. Until recently, no performance requirements have been placed on conveyor equipment suppliers. This arose from a practice of purchasing components in an ad-hoc manner from a variety of sources, and the mine then configuring the system. More recently, single source supply has been adopted as a means of obtaining some performance guarantee, usually expressed in terms of system availability. Unfortunately, the term "availability" has a multitude of definitions, particularly in the underground coal sector. A conveyor availability of 98% is a common goal but this rarely means the conveyor must operate 165 hours/week, 52 weeks/year. There are mines that have one maintenance shift for each production shift and claim availability of 100%. What is meant is that no down time is logged to the conveyor during the hours that it is wanted. This "generous" definition of availability would not be tolerated in many industries and nor should it. Unfortunately, a true definition of availability, such as is applied to steam turbines in the power generation industry, is not particularly helpful. Five day/ week operations would immediately face a 28% penalty against 7 day rosters, and there would be no sensible manner in which weekend maintenance could be incorporated into the availability formula. The approach adopted by Mooranbah North was to specify a period of "Failure Free Operation," which would be followed by a maintenance period. This

Gold production commenced in New Zealand during the gold rush of 1861, and recovery to date is over 900 tonnes, almost 60% of which was alluvial. New Zealand pioneered development of bucket line dredges during the 1880&apos;s. The advent of the modern hydraulic excavator and increased gold price led to a resurgence in alluvial production with about one hundred plants in operation in 1988. The processing plants are mainly floating, with throughputs of 50-100m3/hr fed by backhoes of 20-40 tonne operating weight. Some larger plants with more sophisticated recovery systems have commenced over the last few years, with the largest using a 180 tonne backhoe.

Ventilation of gas mines keeps necessary sanitation and hygienic conditions for labor in mines and increases the safety by dilution and removal of hazardous and dangerous gases in accordance with the safety rules. Several different concepts exist at the present time to design mine ventilation control systems. But technical ideas have been developed inadequately and technological solutions have not been investigated experimentally enough to build a serviceable system. This paper presents a new concept of high- efficiency mine ventilation process control system (MVPCS). The methods of modern system engineering (Kalman, 1969) are used to establish its functional and algorithmic structure. A three level hierarchical principle of system building is considered.

The mining method at the Cannon Mine uses heading and bench stopes, which are subsequently backfilled with cemented high-strength fill prior to pillar removal. The dimensions of the pillars, 24 feet wide by G5 to 95 feet high, re-quire careful blasting in order to not damage the rock, compromising pillar strength and complicating later removal. Additionally, the proximity of dwellings makes vibration control a must for good-neighbor relations. A blast monitoring study was conducted in order to optimize bench blasting practices to maximize fragmentation, reduce costs, minimize well damage, and minimize ground vibration.

INTRODUCTION Tunneling machines were introduced into civil con¬struction in the 1800s, but their practical applications were not realized fully until the 1950s. As of 1977, tunneling machines were being used on most tunneling projects of substantial size. As in civil construction, the mining applications of tunneling machines have included long drives such as tunneling for long ore-body develop¬ment drifts, long haulage tunnels, longwall access drifts, and long crosscut developments. Tunneling machines ranging from 1.75-m (5.7-ft) to more than I1.0-m (36-ft) diam are available from several manufacturers; machines for mining applications generally have ranged between 1.75 and 6.0-m (5.7¬and 20.0-ft) diam. Tunneling machines usually operate at or near horizontal grades and are supported by a rail-haulage backup system. However, declines and inclines have been made using alternative backup equip¬ment. Either circular or shaped tunnels may be bored, depending upon the particular equipment used. Using tunneling machines to bore openings through rock offers several advantages over the use of the drilling and blasting technique. These advantages include a rapid advance, continuous operation, uniformity of the opening size, smooth walls, and safe working conditions. Compared to drilling and blasting, boring reduces the disturbance of adjacent rock, thereby reducing the ground-support requirements and the exposure to water inflows. The smooth walls provide natural arching and present minimum resistance to the flow of air. A tunneling machine should be considered a spe¬cialized mining tool that is well-suited to certain mining applications. Properly applied and sustained, a tunnel¬ing machine contributes to realizing substantial econo¬mies in the development of underground mines. All costs herein are expressed in 1977 US dollars, unless otherwise noted. The mention of trade names and manufacturers is not intended to imply an endorse¬ment of any specific equipment. TYPES OF TUNNELING MACHINES As listed in Table 1, five principal types of tunneling machines were being manufactured in 1977. Each type of machine offers a special solution to a specific mining problem. Although each of these types of machines is described herein, most of this chapter is devoted to the full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine that has demon¬strated the greatest production in both civil construction and mining applications. Full-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 1, a full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine consists of a rotating head that is fitted with rock-cutting tools and is forced into the tunnel face. This head is supported by a bearing on a structural support member that, in turn, is held in place by a hydraulically positioned wall-gripping mechanism. Both torque and thrust are reacted from the cutterhead, through the structural support and gripper mechanism, and to the tunnel wall. The rock cuttings fall to the invert at the tunnel face, and they are removed by means of cutterhead buckets or scoops that transfer the cuttings to a conveyor belt. After advancing the cutter¬head through a preset boring stroke, the tunneling machine is advanced by hydraulically pulling the gripper mechanism in from the tunnel walls, stroking forward, and resetting the gripper to the new forward position on the wall; the machine then is set for the next advance stroke. Full-face machines cut only circular openings. Ma¬chines with diameters as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) and as large as 6.1 m (20 ft) have been used in mining applica¬tions, excavating rock with unconfined compressive strengths in excess of 276 000 kPa (40,000 psi). Although special machines have been designed to turn on a radius of 30 m (100 ft) in both horizontal and vertical directions, the conveyors and backup sup¬port equipment generally limit tunneling machines to turns with a radius of more than 60 m (200 ft). The full-face rotary rock-tunneling machines have provided the fastest and most reliable production of any mining method or machine. These machines can be equipped to place any of a variety of ground-support systems, and they can be provided as "open" machines, as shown in Fig. 1, or as "shielded" machines, as shown in Fig. 2. The open machines have the advantage of allowing the ground to be supported as near to the tunnel face as possible. The shielded machines have been designed principally to allow placing precast con¬crete segments. The shielded machines completely pro¬tect the equipment and personnel at the heading, but they are economically limited to permanent long-life haulageways where full lining is required. Partial-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 3, the partial-face rotary tunneling machine is equipped with a cutterhead that rotates slowly at about 0.21 rad/s (2.0 rpm). The single-disk cutterhead produces the tunnel section shown in Fig. 4 by means of an oscillating motion. These machines work on the undercutting principle, and they are avail¬able in spring-line dimensional increments of 0.1 m (0.32 ft) from 1.5 to 2.1 m (5.0 to 7.0 ft); the vertical dimensions are 2.4 to 3.2 m (8.0 to 10.5 ft), respec¬tively. Depending upon the tunnel width, the cutterhead disk may be fitted with from 8 to 16 drag-bit cutters. Penetration is achieved by means of hydraulic rams that force the tungsten-carbide bits into the rock mass. The operation is cyclic, with cutting occurring only on the upstroke. On the downstroke, the rotating cutter¬head draws the fallen muck from the invert into the panzer-type conveyor for rearward transfer. This feature allows time to either reposition ore cars or to exit the tunnel with muck trains while the machine is cutting, as shown in Fig. 5. INTRODUCTION Limestone injection work was completed in a 440-kW (1.5-million Btu per hour) pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000-kg/h (110,000-lb per hour) industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives were to: (1) identify the important variables that affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum SO2 removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. A more detailed report is given by Lewis et al. (1985). The test program was divided into two phases. The objectives of Phase I were to determine the important variables that affect SO2 reduction and to investigate the effect of limestone addition on combustor operation and heat transfer surfaces. The objective of Phase II was to determine, using only the important variables identified during Phase I, the conditions that resulted in the greatest sulfur dioxide reduction. Phase I Test program Using one limestone, five variables were identified as having an effect on SO2 reduction. These are noted with their respective ranges: heat release rate [103 to 166 kW/m3 (10,000 to 16,000 Btu per hour-cu ft)], Ca/S molar ratio (0 to 3), flue gas oxygen concentration (3% to 5%), additive particle size [90% -150 µm (-100 mesh) and 90% -45 µm (-325 mesh)], and burner stoichiometry (SR = 0.75 and >1.15). A 2.3% sulfur northern West Virginia coal, pulverized to a nominal grind of 70% -75 µm (-200 mesh), was burned for the tests. The limestone used was obtained from a Maysville, KY, quarry and contained 51.75% (wt) CaO. An 11-run statistically designed program (plus three duplicates) was used to screen the five variables. The effect of limestone injection on the combustor heat transfer surfaces was determined by comparing the heat transfer rates through a slag panel and fouling probes during periods with and without limestone injection. Combustor operation was determined by noting any operating problems that occurred during the tests. Test procedure After furnace wall temperatures had stabilized at operating conditions, heat transfer surfaces (slag panel and fouling probes) and the convection section were blown clean, and a four-hour test was begun. The

A common casualty of modern openpit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period, and grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper, these three fundamental openpit mine optimization problems are addressed by encoding them as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are nonlinear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot.
