Limestone resources for industrial, constructional, and agricultural uses occur on the surface and at minable depths in several areas along the Ohio River and its navigable tributaries in Kentucky. Operable thicknesses of high-calcium and high-carbonate limestones suitable for use in cement and lime production, steel manufacture, environmental-control measures, and other special uses are documented in Ordovician and Mississippian formations by analysis of 0.3-meter (foot-by-foot) samples. Active and potential mine and quarry sites afford access to water transportation and proximity to a number of industrial and metropolitan centers. Geologic factors affecting the distribution of deposits include the Cincinnati arch, regional dip into the Appalachian and Eastern Interior basins, complex faulting in and near the Western Kentucky fluorspar mining district, and late Paleozoic erosional unconformities in northeastern Kentucky.

The increasing magnitude of our nation's pollution problems seems to stem from two main factors: urbanization and technical advance. In 1920, less than half the country's 106 million people lived in cities. Forty years later, the urban population accounted for 70 percent of the nation's 179 million. It is predicted that by the end of the century, 95 percent of the U. S. population, estimated at 280 million, will live in urban areas. As these people live increasingly in city concentrations, their residues also concentrate. With technological advances to support the increasing population, the variety and quantity of goods that we use also increases. New materials and processes result in increases in pollutants, some of them new. The harmfulness of these pollutants is sometimes known, but sometimes only suspected. One pollutant of concern at the present time is sulfur dioxide, the product of combustion of sulfur-containing fuels. Research on processes to remove sulfur oxides from flue gas has been in progress for many years. Pioneers in this field were the British who, in the early 1930's, installed a full-scale flue gas scrubbing unit on a 120 MW boiler using alkaline water from a Thames estuary plus chalk. Since that time, various methods have been studied by many investigators. Federal laws covering air pollution started with the 1955 Air Pollution Control Act. With the advent of the Air Quality Act of 1967, and subsequent publishing of criteria and available technology for control of sulfur oxides in January 1969, the clamor for information on commercially available control techniques to remove sulfur from fossil fuels has rapidly increased. Although many state-of-the-art papers have deluged the literature during the past several years, the research going on in the area of sulfur oxides control is of such importance that periodic reviews are justified. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to again review the state-of-the-art, but this time from the stand-point of what is immediately commercially available

New methods and techniques in the field of hydrogeology are being developed constantly. One of these advances has been brought about through the use of inexpensive microcomputers. The formulas used in this paper and developed by Theis, Jacob, Glover, Keck, and Dupuit are not new. The methods by which these formulas can be solved are now available to all who wish to get faster, less expensive, and more reliable answers. A major problem in future discoveries of base metals is their "explorability". By this I mean an exploration program must be designed that assures accurate assessment of the potential for ore, but is within reasonable budgetary constraints. As we are compelled to depend more and more on non-outcropping prospects, "blind" deposits, and as drilling costs multiply, the costs of exploration increase significantly. Solutions to the problem of defining exploration targets are influenced by our conceptions of the origin and recognition o f conditions that localize ore. The maxim that "elephants should be sought in elephant country" presumes we can recognize elephant country. This paper presents a suggested origin for some mineral deposits, and their controls; particularly those termed ?Mississippi Valley type". Tennessee is used as an example of the ideas offered. Mining districts designated "Mississippi Valley type" are, and have long been, the principal sources of barite, fluorite, lead and zinc ores in the United States and elsewhere throughout the world. A large volume of literature is available describing this class of ore deposits, explaining their habitat, and invoking genetic models for them. The quality of this literature is notably uneven, some of it demonstrably erroneous, and much of it is restricted to detailed descriptions of one aspect of the problem, or to detailed descriptions of one aspect of the problem, or to a single mine, or even a single stope. Shortcut methods are commonly employed for estimating mining costs for prefeasibility studies. Most of these methods, however, are suitable for earliest stage studies or for internal discussion purposes only. The experts at InfoMine?s CostMine division recommend that any cost estimate completed for purposes of significant decisionmaking or for compliance with Canada?s NI 43-101 requirements be completed using a determinative itemized method. The same basic principles apply for an early stage, intermediate stage, or advanced stage estimate. The only difference is in the level of detail and effort employed. ? Based on the results of a completed resource estimate, an itemized cost estimate begins with development of a conceptual mine plan. Using a surface mine as an example, four elements are crucial no matter what level of study is initiated. Basic geometry of the ore deposit and waste material, with a determination of the expected ratio of waste to ore, a reasonable pit slope angle, possibly requiring the completion of geotechnical studies to predict the waste-to-ore ratio with certainty. ? Determination of the assumed ore and waste production rates. ? Locations of all ore stockpiles and waste dumps. ? Segmental haulage distances and gradients for ore and waste.

Automatic digital phase imaging should yield unbiased and representative characterizations of gold ores. However, this is not a simple tusk due to low gold grade, fine grain size, possible complex mineralogy, nugget effect, etc. Using the same sections of a gold-rich ore, a critical test was performed using an optical microscope (OM) and an electron microscope (EM). In general, the two methods are consistent and useful for ore processing. There are some minor differences, such as the detection of very fine gold grains is enhanced by EM. With the growing urban population and the concern for traffic congestion and pollution (emissions control), public transportation is becoming more and more attractive to both city dwellers and managers. To gain access to the central area of the city, the sub- way remains the most viable alternative, despite its higher cost when compared to above ground or elevated transportation systems. There are relatively few regulations and criteria for subway ventilation, particularly when compared with mine ventilation. The main document that provides guidance and general recommendations for subway ventilation and environmental control is the Sub- way Environmental Design Handbook, published in 1976 (2nd edition) by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of Re- search and Development. Many of the subway systems in existence today have been designed and built with ventilation features adequate for normal train operation, but their design does not consider stringent criteria for such emergency conditions as a train fire in a tunnel. The National Fire Protection Association's Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit Systems known as NFPA 130 as well as the ASHRAE Handbook - HVAC Applications (1995) provide specific design and operation requirements for subway ventilation systems. Some of the existing, old subways are upgrading their ventilation systems to comply with the new regulations. The ability of a particular ventilation system design to provide adequate ventilation during normal and emergency conditions can be evaluated using computer modeling and simulation techniques. A train fire will cause a sudden change in the tunnel ventilation pattern by adding an unsteady and fast-growing source of heat. The hot air and gasses created by a fire will tend to flow uphill, possibly against the normal flow, producing a 'backlayering effect." To prevent this effect from happening, enough ventilation must be provided and the governing criterion to establish the required airflow is called 'Critical Velocity." Several software packages are available for special applications on tunnel and station ventilation as well as to model the spread of smoke and heat in case of a major tunnel fire, using Computational Fluid Dynamics. This paper presents the current issues in subway ventilation, as shared by the public transit community around the world, together with modern alternative design concepts vis-à-vis the more stringent emerging Fire-Life Safety criteria. Examples of recent studies and ventilation systems design are provided.

In spite of our deep conviction that it would be wrong for the United States to enter World War II, when, after Pearl Harbor, we were actually in it, I felt that I must do all I could to help. The country had been so good to me that I could not decently stay on the sidelines. My first thought was that I might help with supply and administration in the Air Force, as in World War I. So on the evening of Pearl Harbor I wired the chief of our Air Force in Washington saying that I had been on Gen. William Mitchell's staff in World War I and was offering my services again. I received a noncommital answer, but after a couple of weeks was told to take my physical examination. I passed it, but nothing further happened. After helping to make plans for the wartime operations of Summit King and Desert Silver, Dorothy and I went to New York to spend Christmas with Molly and Peter, both of whom were in college in the East. I had to complete a report on the Argonaut mine in California first, though the war made my recommendations of dubious validity. Before Christmas I received wires from Temple Bridgeman, Phil Wilson, and other friends who had taken positions with government agencies responsible for securing mineral products needed for war use. They urged me to join them. It was evidently a case of not whether but how I could be most useful. After six uncertain days with the family in New York I took the night train to Washington on the 28th of December. I had a hectic day there. First I saw Arthur Bunker and Phil Wilson at what became the Aluminum and Magnesium Division of the War Production Board. Their office was in an old converted barracks. They asked me to examine magnesium deposits in Nevada at once, and then to look at other magnesium and aluminum properties. After leaving

Grinding mills, both autogenous and ball can be powered by several basic means. The three methods used today are girth gear drives, gearless drives and trunnion coupled reducers. This paper will focus on the first of these methods -girth gear drives. The girth gear drive has been used on thousands of mills which continue to operate successfully. These drives are noted for their simplicity and low cost. In the past, the horsepower capacity of girth gears has been slow to keep up with the horsepower increase required by the mill builders, particularly since the advent of the SAG mill. Gear manufacturers had capacity for 2000 HP mills in the 1950's, 5000 HP in the 1960's and 6500 horsepower in the 1970's. The 70's and 80's brought dual pinion girth gear drives which allowed mill sizes beyond 10,000 horsepower. Gear manufactures who could not keep up with the pace of the horsepower demands and the quality and reliability demanded by the mill builders and users have fallen by the wayside.

Continuing its objective of sharing new ideas, methods, theory, and engineering developments, more than 550 members of the underground fraternity gathered in New York City for the 1985 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). Since the first meeting in 1972, RETC’S aim has been to lay a foundation of tunneling experience on which the industry could expand and develop over the years. The RETC is jointly sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the American Society of Civil Engineers, in cooperation with the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Engineering Institute of Canada. The 17 sessions included 72 papers that explored up-to-date practices in the mining and civil engineering fields. Session topics ranged from geotechnical and seismic design, through design, construction, and support of underground openings, to ground water control in shafts and mine openings. Case histories of tunnel boring machines and large diameter tunnel and underground openings were also reviewed. All the papers presented at the three-day conference are valuable additions to improving the state of rapid excavation. A few sessions, however, are particularly noteworthy as they are geared to the mining industry. The two volume proceedings of the entire conference are available from SME. (See ad on page 1003).

The Great Salt Lake occupies about 1000 square miles whereas its predecessor, Lake Bonneville occupied 20,000 square miles and its shoreline reached 1000 feet above the present lake level. The sediments of Lake Bonneville range from peripheral gravel and sand deposits to central basin calcareous clays and silts, gypsum sands, and saline precipitates. The drilling and engineering tests conducted by the Utah State Department of Highways for many highway structure sites and the construction of Federal Interstate freeway provided engineering and hydrologic properties of Lake Bonneville sediments. Ground water and surface brine exploitation have contributed hydrologic and chemical data; the geologic and mineralogical data are scientific research contributions.

A variety of dynamic failure cases with regional impact were described at a bump symposium held in 1958. These types of events, while rare, are of particular interest because their ability to impact a large area has disaster potential. These cases can be grouped into two broad classes of events by mechanism. These are (1) a slip along steeply dipping faults and (2) the fracturing of strong strata above or below the coal seam. Both failure modes produce dynamic or “shock” loads on the perimeter (roof, rib and floor) of mine openings. Special consideration should be given to these failure modes in the planning of deep coal mines, since their occurrence is not within the professional experience of many contemporary workers. In addition, their potential is not evaluated by many of the analysis tools commonly used to evaluate hazards in coal mine plans.

The demand for sustainable and profitable/efficient projects within the tunneling and other underground engineering sectors grows rapidly. Construction tasks play a key role within the project conduction, whether as primary (tunneling), secondary (e.g., mine securing) or tertiary processes (e.g., workshops). The construction tasks of primary processes create the main structures, such as tunnels, which resemble the main project goal. For the secondary and tertiary processes, the purpose of the task shifts. The main goal is to provide structures, such as the securing of the cavity and workshops, that enable the project and enhance the efficiency of the primary conduction underground. To plan and optimize the conduction of construction tasks underground, whether they are identified as primary, secondary or tertiary tasks, the work preparation can be used. This method, known from the above ground construction, can be adapted and used underground. The approach of a digital work preparation tool combines, connects and adapts the main tasks “choice of procedure,” “logistics” and “site planning.” In addition, the digital tool is connected with digital models (construction, site, surroundings). With the adaption and forward projection of the work preparation, underground constructions (e.g., tunneling) can provide a more sustainable and efficient outcome.

The Stillwater District is located in south central Montana approximately 75 miles southwest of Billings, the state's largest city. It lies along the northeast front of the Beartooth Mountains and is within the boundaries of the Custer and Gelatin National Forests. The district contains some of the nation's most spectacular mountain scenery. Montana's highest peaks, including 12,799 foot Granite Peak, rise a few miles south of the area. Much of the district is located on a gently undulating plateau which averages 8500 ft. above sea level, broken by hills up to 10,000 feet and slashed by glacially carved canyons, some of which are more than 3,000 feet deep.(Fig. 1) Immediately to the north and east, the land falls away to the Great Plains, stretching unbroken to the Mississippi River. Two major tributaries of the Yellowstone River, the Stillwater and Boulder Rivers, traverse the area and several large streams originate in the district itself. Access to the high mountain country and the adjoining Beartooth Primitive Area is restricted to a few horse and jeep trails continuing from the terminus of improved roads in the bottom of the Stillwater and Boulder Valleys. Hunters, fishermen and cabin owners make intensive use of the area along its improved transportation routes, but hikers seldom venture more than three miles beyond the end of the roads. People from the Billings area are the most frequent visitors.

The presentation describes the operation and field test results of a seafloor massive sulphide prospecting system. The prospecting system is deployed from a work-class ROV, and it features a new and innovative electromagnetic ocean floor conductivity sensor. It also includes magnetometers, a multibeam sonar, and subsea cameras. The prospecting system has been used in two exploration campaigns - one in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2007 and again in 2008 in both PNG and Tonga waters. The 2007 campaign used the prototype sensor, and the 2008 campaign used a Mark II version. Correlations between drill core samples and EM conductivity results are excellent. New prospecting system data will be used to help plan future core drilling locations. The presentation discusses the principle of operation of the EM conductivity sensor, discusses improvements made in the EM sensor and the overall prospecting system, and shows exploration results. I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent com¬parative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging.

From a computational point of view calculating a variogram is a perfectly simple operation. For any particular study, we know which variable is to be studied. We also have a good idea of structural parameters which are likely to be important (the scale of the phenomenon, the probable direction of the anisotropy, etc.). Finally, we know the structure of the data file. So we can specify the parameters to be used to calculate the variogram (the distance classes, the angular classes, etc.). This allows us to decide which variogram program is most appropriate (1, 2 or 3 dimensional data, regularly or irregularly spaced, etc. ) . In general, the basic statistics (mean, variance, correlation? etc.) have been calculated beforehand, and so the distribution of the data is already known. Consequently, the choice of the parameter values fed into the variogram is by no means arbitrary. But it must nevertheless be made before the' variogram is calculated. If the resulting variogram is not satisfactory, the whole sequence of operations has to be repeated. Before going on to see how this can be avoided, it is worthwhile having a brief look at the common causes of "unsatisfactory" variograms.

Since time immemorial, Mother Nature has been transporting slurries with both air and water serving as the carrier medium. Consider for example the formation of the continental shelves off our coast lines which are being formed by rivers emptying erroded land surface and depositing it into bays and gulfs. As the erosion processes take place, the fines are suspended in water which flows in streams and rivers and deposits where the velocity of the flow reduces sufficiently to allow the fines to settle out. The same process in some crude form is provided when one hoses his driveway or patio and moves dirt so as to provide a cleaning action. These examples illustrate rather crudely how the formation of slurries allows for the transport of solids. In recent years, this mechanism has become fairly well understood and slurry pipelining of many materials is now a vivid reality. The movement of liquids in pipelines necessarily occasions the use of pumps for the purpose. Those of us who have had some rub with the petroleum industry are familiar with the transport of solids through mud pumps and cementing and fracturing pumps where the movement of slurries is an everyday matter. In the drilling of an oil well the circulating fluid utilized to remove chips which are cut by a drill bit from holes drilled deep in the earth is called drilling mud. This substance contrary to what the name might imply is usually a fairly sophisticated material designed to develop certain characteristics which are desirable in the drilling process. The particles which have been cut by the drill bit are suspended in the moving column of fluid and brought to the surface and deposited. The separation of the cuttings from the drilling fluids is accomplished by the use of shaker screens and settling pits. However, it is impractical to remove the fines completely from the drilling fluid and as a result they are pumped through the mud pumps back into the circulatory stream.

Over the past several years, computerized financial models have been an important part of Newmont's strategic planning process. Two applications will be discussed in this paper: a general purpose financial model of Newmont, and a detailed operational/financial model of Magma Copper Company. Newmont?s general purpose financial model was developed using Lotus 1-2-3. It was designed to aid management in assessing the financial consequences of investment and financing decisions associated with long-term strategic planning by simulating the consolidated effect from individual transactions. Not only is the model capable of assessing the sensitivity of specific decisions to changes in the external economic environment (i. e., commodity prices, interest rates, inflation and exchange rates), it can also evaluate the effect from operating and financial decisions, including changing production levels and cost structures at individual operating units as well as simulating several types of transactions, including equity and debt issues, acquisitions and divestitures. The analysis of Magma Copper Company required the development of a detailed operating and financial model of the Company. The model was developed using IFPS in the corporation?s UNISYS (then Burroughs) B7900 mainframe computer and included separate pro forma financial statements for each of San Manuel-Pinto Valley's mines and concentrators, as well as Magma's smelting and refining operations. The outcome of this analysis was the decision to merge Magma Copper and Pinto Valley Copper Corporation, and to recapitalize the new corporation in order to provide funds for a retrofit and expansion of its Arizona smelter and expansions of its refinery and SXEW facilities.
