"The East Side Access Project (ESA) involves the construction of geometrically complex underground structures including a large number of caverns and bifurcations. Initially conceived as dual lined structures with either traditional concrete or shotcrete final linings (SFL), construction economy, advances in concrete placement technology and scheduling among others led to a wide use of what is referred to as freeform or pneumatically applied concrete (PAC) for the construction of tunnel final linings. PAC is a method of applying concrete without using formwork, where a wet mix concrete is pneumatically installed to encase reinforcement to full lining thickness. PAC has been widely adopted at ESA well beyond initial expectations. The paper addresses the design and construction aspects of the PAC method and contrasts it to traditional SFL lining placement. The experience made provides guidance for future PAC and SFL applications. THE EAST SIDE ACCESS PROJECT AND USE OF FREEFORM CONCRETE The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodates New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the New York City Transit (NYCT) Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The construction includes mining and lining of new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. The tunnels run from Queen’s Sunny Side Yard through the existing 63rd St. Tunnel, underneath Manhattan’s Park Avenue until termination at 37th Street. Differing types of tunneling methods and final lining systems are being used depending on the ground conditions, geometry and size of the excavation, site constraints and functional requirements. Mining of the Queens segment of the ESA Project involved soft ground tunneling by pressurized face tunnel boring machines, cut and cover construction, and conventional tunneling. The Manhattan segment of the ESA Project involves mining in hard rock by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header."

The Taharoa plant of New Zealand Steel Mining Limited extracts a 57% Fe titano-magnetite concentrate from a large mineral sand deposit 90 miles south of Auckland on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. The plant consists of an 18-inch suction cutter dredge which feeds a 750 TPH floating separation plant. An initial gravity/ size separation is obtained using cone concentrators. Finished concentrate is produced by a combination of conventional drum magnetic separators and top fed wet Mortsell magnetic separators. Concentrate is stockpiled by cyclone, and reclaimed by a bull- dozer and tunnel system. Repulped concentrate is pumped by sub- marine pipeline to slurry tankers anchored at a single buoy one mile offshore. Current concentrate production rate is in excess of one million metric tons per year.

The control of high temperature processes requires the ability to measure significant variables during operations. With increasing automatic computerized control there is need for sensors which can provide on-line chemical analyses of all phases present in a reactor without the necessity to withdraw samples from the high temperature reaction zone. Probes using electrochemical cells and conductivity measuring devices have provided the answers to some of these problems, notably the measurement of oxygen in liquid metals, and similar potential systems based on the same fundamental principles for the analysis of non-metallic and metallic elements appear feasible. In this discussion, the state-of-the-art in chemical sensors will be discussed in terms of the potential materials of construction, and, in some cases, the limitations of upper temperature at which some promising systems can, at present, be applied. It is concluded that a new phase of basic research could improve the outlook substantially by providing solutions for some problems in chemical sensors which are now well-defined.

The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed.

Powerful, yet inexpensive, personal computers running Windows-95 operating systems provide powerful mine-wide monitoring capabilities when properly engineered. Long awaited conductivity over LAN, phone and Internet links provide new dimensions for sharing information throughout an operator's organization, in- deed around the world. On-line data analysis, archival data storage and historical trend viewing generate shared inputs to production, safety and maintenance personnel. Five years in development, Rel-Tek's new EZ-Trol/W-DX system was engineered around the pilfalls of a Windows environment. It now offers higher speeds, 3D animated graphics and long distance telemetry - all with better reliability than ever before possible. The ubiquitous DDS utility inherent in most Windows was discarded in favor of a lightning fast RAM format. Several ponderous interpretive programs were redesigned into a single compiled entity, thus avoiding the overhead from message conversion, handshaking and transfer. To make the system user friendly, a 'Wizard" utility helps operators set up and reconfigure their systems on site. In-mine data acquisition telemetry was also re- vamped, incorporating a unique noise avoidance scheme, dubbed the "DX" bus - enabling longer distances and higher reliability. 12- bit analog conversion provides the enhanced resolution needed for field scaling auto-cal sensors. By mid '96, eight EZ-TROLMI- DX systems were up and running, several for more than a year. Factory updating and assistance are possible over a phone or Internet link. Our factory testing of components routinely includes actual operation at 2400 BAUD over 14 miles of twisted pair wires.

Introduction Traditional aggregate sources - riverbeds and alluvial fans - located close to developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As sand and gravel reserves are depleted, nearby production plants cannot secure additional, adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. It promotes development, street paving, home building, and industrial and commercial centers. Economics make us favor developments close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors, who soon become our detractors. Current Aggregate Mining Problems Urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. Neighbors dislike the view of pits and quarries, and they complain about dust, noise, and trucking. In general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source. This is reflected in land use or zoning laws. In most localities, mining requires a special-use permit. Public hearings are required before a legislative body. If a large group of opponents show up, legislators will often deny the land use. Urban areas are seeing traditional close-in sand and gravel sites becoming no longer available for industry. A parallel situation is also developing in most urban areas. That is, the not-in-my-backyard attitude toward landfills. As urban areas mature; a significant amount of change takes place in the physical makeup of a city. Streets and parking lots deteriorate and need repaving. Curbs and gutters need to be relocated. This necessitates a place to dispose of excess, or old, paving and structural material. Since landfills have become at least as difficult to permit as sand and gravel sites, they are becoming remote from urban areas. A significant portion of the structural material that needs to be disposed of is concrete and asphalt. This material is heavier than other materials. Thus, the cost of moving a large volume of very heavy material to a landfill becomes very expensive. In California, dump truck transportation is regulated by the State Public Utilities Commission through minimum rate tariffs. A rule of thumb for estimating the cost of such transportation is once the material is loaded, the extra kilometer (mile) costs $0.09/t ($0.08 per st). Thus, to haul an 18-t (20-st) road an extra 32 km (20 miles) will cost about $32. Because of its remote location, the cost of hauling aggregates to the point of use in an urban area becomes excessive - about the same as hauling the material to a landfill. Here is a classic example for synergism. If we could save the transportation cost of heavy demolition material by disposing it relatively close to the central city (its source), and at the same time provide an aggregate source close to the central city (its point of use), two difficult economic situations can be solved. Thus, the develop¬ment of recycling concrete and asphalt. Mining Concrete and Asphalt There are two methods of mining concrete and asphalt. The first is to pick up the old pavement in pieces. Thin, cracked pavement can usually be lifted from the grade with a front-end loader. It will break up into manageable-sized pieces. With heavier pavement, it is sometimes necessary to intentionally break it up with a stomper or heavy ripper. The pieces are loaded into heavy dump trucks and shipped to the crushing site. I. INTRODUCTION Modern hydrometallurgy has its roots in such notable successes as heap leaching for recovery of copper, cyanidation of gold ores, the Bayer process, the Oxland process for tungsten, electrorefining of copper, roast/ leach/electrowin process for zinc, and production of yellowcake from lowgrade uranium ores. Metallurgical testing techniques, sampling and analytical procedures, operating and maintenance practices, and improved methods and materials of construction which were pioneered in these processes have promoted the extension of hydrometallurgy into other applications. Periodically, new tools such as solvent extraction, resin ion exchange, and flocculants have opened new avenues to hydrometallurgists. Conversely, pursuit of more complex mineralization, the rising costs of energy and environmental quality preservation, and declining ore grades continue to create new challenges. For much of this century, it can be fairly said that practically any hydrometallurgical development moved the frontier of technology. The 1970's and 1980fs, however, have seen a significant maturing of hydrometallurgy's role in process metallurgy. Simplistically, this maturing seems to derive from a growing awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of hydrometallurgy and a determined effort to capitalize on the strengths. For example, many of us were among those revolutionaries of the 1960's and 1970's who taught that "chemical smelting" was the answer to the treatment of all sulfides. We now recognize, however, that only in very special cases can hydrometallurgy offer economic advantage over the generally less energy-intensive pyrometallurgical systems. The maturing of hydrometallurgy does not, however, signal stagnation. Important innovations are being studied and developed in most extractive areas, and a number are approaching or have achieved commercialization. From our company's perspective, that of an organization dealing with the development of the most economic solutions to metallurgical problems, innovation must be defined as the commercially successful reduction of an idea to practice. There appears to be no shortage of ideas, nor has there ever been a shortage. Many ideas now being implemented were conceived decades ago, but reduction to practice was foiled by the lack of such technology as responsive process control and economical materials of construction capable of withstanding highly corrosive or erosive environments. Commercialization of a new process is a particularly challenging undertaking. Even if technical risks are reduced to a minimum through careful and thoughtful process development, there are inevitable uncertainties in feed characteristics, variable costs, and product prices. Commercialization takes courage, both on the part of innovators who may be staking their careers or reputations and of investors who may face financial disaster in the event of project failure. This paper discusses innovative programs and recently commercialized processes which either have been discussed in the literature or disclosed to Hazen Research staff in private nonconfidential conversations with contacts in industry. Regarding this latter category of information, relative ease of communication has resulted in many of our observations being of North American origin.

The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores and, for major veins, their great vertical range (>990m). Less well-documented are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine, and volcaniclastic rocks deposited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals Here precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate, and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfide and precious metal telluride-s. Wallrock alteration is quite limited adjacent to veins and somewhat more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias.

This paper presents research on the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment used in surface coal mining. Environmental impact was assessed through the measurement of equipment exhaust and dust emissions, and sound level. In this study, exhaust emission refers to carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dust generation refers to fine particles (PM2.5), inhalable particles (PM10) and total suspended particulate matter (TSP). Sound level refers to the sound pressure level at different distances from the equipment. Modeling of the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment was conducted using the Microsoft Visual Studio.NET software package. This research was a part of a broader project involving the development of a software system for the selection of productive, cost-efficient and ecofriendly mining systems, sponsored by the Appalachian Research Initiatives for Environmental Sciences (ARIES). This research may assist mining professionals in quantifying the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment, and developing strategies for reducing the overall impact of such equipment in surface mining.

With the dissolution of the former USSR and a welcoming of foreign, minerals expertise by a host of developing countries, a "new," more international, world of minerals is open to the mining industry. However, even in the new frontier, the old laws of nature still apply. For those attendees of the 98th annual Northwest Mining convention, the adage "survival of the fittest" commanded particular attention. Miners, engineers, geologists and other unique species traveled to Spokane in December to learn of adaptations they can make to assure, or at least prolong, their place in the mineral industry's land of the living. You have heard the tales of the spotted owl and the desert tortoise, but add to this endangered list the North American mining industry. During a session on international investment criteria, D. Silver of Balfour Holdings (Littleton, CO) blamed excessive environmental regulation, 1872 Mining Law revision and the anti-mining-and-business attitude of our government for migrations from and extinctions within the domestic mining population. "We've been on a death curve for some time," Silver said, "with a lower birth rate and a higher death rate. In the last four years, we've lost 60% of the gold producers in North America, and we're down to 110 companies. The entire industry has lost about 400 companies and is now down to 2800." Unreasonable regulation founded on emotion rather than scientific fact has been the chief cause of death, according to many of the convention speakers. B.J. Kennedy, president and chief operating officer of FMC Gold (Reno, NV), emphasized, "We have accepted a regulatory environment - but we oppose being strangled to death by unreasonable regulations."

The turning bands method for the simulation of spatially correlated data in two or three dimensions requires that the relation- ship between the covariance obeyed by the realizations first generated on lines, and the covariance of the two or three dimensional process must be solved. In three dimensions the solution is immediate, but in two dimensions the integral equation relating the covariances of the one and two dimensional processes is more complex. This is solved in this paper and is applied to the most common model used in ore deposit description, the spherical covariance.

The paper discusses the legislative and practical approach adopted to problems of management of environment in relation to coal mining in a very sensitive area of the south coast of New South Wales. The environmental problems are complicated in this area due to multiple and very often conflicting land usages. The environmental approach in relation to water quality maintenance, noise control and air quality is discussed and methods adopted meet stringent requirements. Requirements of New South Wales Regulations on Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) are described.

It has never been easy to finance within mining sector. Leasing may be an alternative source of finance for mining investments. Leasing is acquiring the right of usage for an asset for a definite period of time without having the ownership of it. In this study, a model for analyzing the lease financing opportunities for mining investments under risk and suitable for establishing a satisfactory leasing policy for both lessee and lessor is developed. Using the model, it is possible to obtain an expected equilibrium lease amount acceptable by both lessor and lessee and also the expected range of the equilibrium lease amount as a decision tool. First the existing leasing policies are mentioned, then the developed model is described. A case study is presented to illustrate the use of the model in establishing a leasing policy. In conclusion, the usefulness of the model is discussed.

Common carbon dioxide capturing reagents, such as amines and sodium hydroxide, are expensive, toxic, and energy intensive to regenerate. We have added frothers to a sodium carbonate solution in order to increase the surface area available for CO2 transport within the packed bed of a counter current scrubbing column. Addition of frothers has improved the performance of sodium carbonate scrubbing solutions to be on par with sodium hydroxide scrubbing solutions. This novel enhancement of a relatively inexpensive CO2 capture-regeneration cycle shows potential to allow plants to turn a profit by sequestering a waste product. These results are discussed in detail in the following manuscript. INTRODUCTION The combustion of fossil fuels converts chemical energy to thermal energy. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of the reaction. 80% of the world’s electricity is produced by using this thermal energy to power a generator, accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to stabilize the rising atmospheric CO2 levels, researchers are investigating the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems in power plants. [1] Efforts to capture CO2 at some power plants have been successful, but the cost of installing and operating the required equipment is high. As such, very few power plants have CCS systems. If CO2 can be captured and processed into a product that can be sold at a profit, installing CCS systems in power plants will be a very attractive business decision. In order for the sale of captured CO2 to become a profitable venture, the cost of capturing the CO2 from a flue gas must be reduced. BACKGROUND The most common method for separating CO2 from a flue gas is by passing it through a counter-current packed bed scrubbing column. The flue gas enters the bottom of a column while a solution of a chemical with properties advantageous to the absorption of CO2 is pumped to the top. The fluids interact in a packed bed, where the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid. CO2 is an acid gas, so it is common for the scrubbing solution to be alkaline in nature in order to neutralize the carbonic acid that is formed when it is dissolves into water. The exhaust exits the top of the column free of carbon dioxide, which exits the column in the scrubbing solution, reacting or complexing with the absorbent. Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a CO2 scrubbing column. It shows the molar flowrates and compositions of the gas and liquid at the bottom [1], the top [2], and an arbitrary height in the column [Z]. [2,15] L is the molar flowrate of liquid at any point in in the column. G is the molar flowrate of gas at any point in the column. Since the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid, L and G are variable with respect to height. To simplify calculations, the CO2 free molar flowrates Ls and Gs are often used. X is the fraction moles of aqueous CO2 per mole of CO2 free liquid. Y is the fraction moles of gaseous CO2 per mole of CO2 free gas. Figure 2 is a composition diagram of the scrubbing column depicted in figure 1.

"IntroductionTungsten carbide is a valuable material used in a variety of different applications, including the manufacturing of cutting tools, bearings and as a cost-efficient alternative to industrial diamonds. Both the high hardness value (Mohs 9) and scratch resistance of this material make it a valuable commodity for use in the mining industry.Usually, the production of tungsten carbide is a multistep process involving one or more of the following unit operations: hydrometallurgical digestion, solution purification, crystallization (as ammonium paratungstate), calcination, hydrogen reduction and carbon synthesis. The proposed three-step process eliminates three of these steps (crystallization, calcination and hydrogen reduction) by implementing a combination of hydro/pyrometallurgical techniques. These include alkaline pressure leaching, carbon adsorption and carburization roasting. By eliminating some of the intermediate processing steps, there is potential to reduce energy consumption and decrease overall operating costs.Methods and resultsInitially, alkaline pressure leaching with sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) was employed to selectively leach tungsten, as tungstate (WO4 2-), from an industrial Scheelite (CaWO4) flotation concentrate. Experimental variables included lixiviant (Na2CO3) concentration, temperature and residence time. Experimental constants, based on previous work, were percent solids at 13 wt% and agitation at 400 rpm (Queneau and Strathmore, 1969). Leaching results showed it was possible to extract 97% of the tungsten present. The most favorable conditions for leaching were determined: 2M Na2CO3, temperature of 180° C and a residence time of 30 minutes."

Mining of thin coal seams is both difficult and uneconomical. As a result, most of thin-seam coal reserves in the U. S. are not being mined. It is estimated that nearly 910 Gt (K. Unrug, 1985) of coal reserves exist in 355 to 710 mm thick seams. The Bureau is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm thick coal seams. This paper summarizes the research work on existing thin-seam mining techniques, testing on small and full scale physical models of the Bureau slot mining concept, and computer modeling of the full-scale process.

A major contribution to the art of blasting was made at the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company?s Hawkins Mine in Cashwauk, Minnesota during April of 1956. It was here that the first experiments with fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate were conducted-experiments which led to the development of the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil method of blasting which has been eagerly adopted by open pit and quarry operators throughout the United States. While this new blasting agent was a more or less natural outgrowth of the Akremite Process devised by Maumee Colleries of Terre Haute, Indiana; no one, to our knowledge, had used this particular combination of ingredients prior to this time. Certainly this was a "break-through" as far as the Lake Superior District was concerned. Akremite consists of a mechanical mixture of grained ammonium nitrate and a solid carbonaceous material packed in a plastic bag. At the time of its introduction to the Mesaba Range, Akremite sold for 10.5 cents a pound as compared to the 18 cent powder previously used in both wet and dry large hole blasting. The discovery of this agent was indeed a remarkable achievement, one that afforded a substantial reduction in blasting costs. However, Akremite proved to be only an intermediate step in the evolution of our present low cost explosives. Cleveland-Cliffs utilized prilled ammonium nitrate and fuel oil and then eliminated the mixing and packaging plant entirely by combining the two raw materials in the field at the drill hole collar or in the hole itself. Thus we have approached the ultimate in simplicity, for the blaster and his helper now manufacture their own explosives not only as they are needed but where they are needed, and at a cost of under 4 cents a pound. This two-man crew may charge and explode as much as 8 tons of ammonium nitrate in an eight-hour shift and in so doing break some 65,000 tons of ore.

New compound classes previously unknown in flotation practice of non-sulphide ore beneficiation have been developed. The presented study results consider amine salts of alkyl sulphate and alkyl benzene sulphonic acid used as primary collectors, N-methyl amides of alkyl phosphoric acids - as auxiliary modifying collectors and pentaerythritole ethers of tall oil - as flotation accelerators. These reagents synthesized from accessible raw material are almost ready for commercial production. Efficiency of the new reagents for various non-sulphide ores has been demonstrated in a series of flotation tests.

Olivine was first described and named by Warner in 1790. It is an olive green to greenish gray colored magnesium-iron silicate containing a mixture, in solid solution, of fosterite (Mg2SiO4) and fayalite (Fe2SiO4). Ratios between fosterite and fayalite in olivine are somewhat variable, but in general olivine contains at least 85% fosterite. Specific gravity is variable also, depending on the ratios of fosterite to fayalite. As a rule it is in the 3.2 - 3.4 range. All commercial olivine is obtained from the rock dunite, the most basic member of the peridotite group. Dunites, in addition to being composed primarily of olivine, generally contain assessory pyroxenes and spinels (chromite and magnetite). Dunites', when altered by hydrothermal solutions or metamorphism, often contain alteration minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite, vermiculite and amphiboles. In the 1930's and 40's considerable research was conducted on olivine for use as a refractory, plant food raw material, magnesium source for metal, and a source for magnesium chemicals. This research met with only limited success.

Geological domain modeling is an important step in mineral resources evaluation. The procedure can be laborious and time-consuming, especially in multivariate settings. However, estimates are significantly improved when carefully limited by geological variables. This paper proposes a workflow for geological domain modeling suited for stratigraphic deposits. The workflow consists in automatically defining the domains by using clustering algorithms, generating the surfaces that represent the contacts by interpolation and subsequent triangulation, and simulating the surfaces. The proposed workflow produces consistent and realistic results and allows the user to test different domain configurations and assess volumetric uncertainty automatically and quickly.
