Humate mining in New Mexico is a small industry [455 m3 (16,079 cu yd) valued at $395,894 for 1983] with three mines active in 1985. Either humate (carbonaceous claystones rich in organic matter) or weathered coal ("leonardite") high in humic acid are mined. The humic acid content needed to meet consumer specifications determines which type is mined. The humate and "leonardite" now mined in New Mexico are used primarily as soil conditioners or as drilling mud additives. The potential resource for both are very extensive within the coal-bearing formations of the San Juan Basin in northwest New Mexico.

Materials related problems at mines can be big ones - like a newly completed 1 -m (3.5ft) water pipeline burst during initial filling, grinding ball consumption at double the typical norms on startup of a new semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuit or 30 open-pit haul trucks in the shop for new bed liners after less than a year’s service. Materials engineering provides solutions to these kinds of equipment problems by selecting good materials and designs, by trouble-shooting service failures and by maintaining high quality in vendor-furnished materials and components. Materials with good properties, correctly made and fabricated, correctly installed in mining and processing equipment, produce ore and final products reliably and efficiently. Materials engineering, applied during design phases, specification writing, and receipt and installation of materials, ensures that equipment will have the best possible shot at performing up to expectations. Good calls on materials properties - specifying state-of-art materials produced by competent manufacturers - help mine managers to reduce downtime and mining and processing costs. Materials that are improperly made or specified can make a mining operation less efficient or, possibly, uneconomical.

Petromineralogical studies of late Paleocene–middle Eocene phosphate nodules in the Subathu Basin of Solan District, Himachal Pradesh

This paper provides a summary of the studies performed over a period of more than fifteen years by the Italian National Research Council's Mineral Processing Institute in Rome to develop applications for the use of chelating reagents in the flotation of metallic minerals. A description is given of the various phases through which the studied progressed, starting with the combined use of commercial chelating reagents and a neutral oil and then moving on to the synthesis of new long-chain chelate collectors for the flotation of sulphide and oxidized Pb, Zn and Cu minerals. After a series of preliminary tests which confirmed the possibility of floating various metallic minerals with commercial reagents containing chelating groups exerting specific action on given cations, the studies were addressed to the development of a theoretical method of choosing chelating groups that exert selective action on one metallic mineral rather than others. The theoretical approach was based on thermodynamic data concerning the chemical equilibria in solution. The validity of the method has been proved in numerous cases by flotation tests on pure minerals. Subsequently the research was directed towards the design and synthesis of reagents with a mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure containing chelating groups for Pb and Zn and an alcoxyl chain of various length, position and configuration. The flotation results obtained on oxidized and mixed Zn-Pb ores provided interesting pointers for designing the nonpolar portion. The structural criteria identified via these studies were interpreted on the basis of chemical and steric considerations. A description is given of a new synthetic chelate collector which is effective in the selective flotation of Cu minerals from complex sulphides. The fact that this reagents is more selective than xanthate is demonstrated by comparative flotation tests on actual ores.

A new separator, known as the Hydrofloat cell, has been developed to overcome limitations of traditional flotation cells in recovering coarse particles. In this process, small air bubbles are introduced into a hindered "teeter" bed of fluidized solids to create light bubble-particle aggregates that can be separated based on differences in density. Laboratory tests conducted with coarse phosphate feeds indicate that the Hydrofloat cell is capable of increasing BPL recoveries by nearly 20% over conventional flotation methods. Based on these encouraging results, a pilot-scale Hydrofloat cell was fabricated and installed at a central Florida phosphate plant. Test data collected using the pilot-scale unit suggest that the BPL recovery of the plus 35 mesh plant feed can be increased by more than 40% through the application of this new technology. This improvement is particularly beneficial due to the very high grade (-73% BPL) of the plus 16 mesh particles in the Hydrofloat concentrate. This article describes the theoretical basis for the development of the Hydrofloat cell and provides an overview of recent laboratory and pilot-scale test results.

Introduction The 150 MW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power plant described in this article is the product of recent Bechtel experience in the industrial power and steam market, where the economic feasibility of fluidized bed projects has been proven. The ability of CFB boilers to burn low grade fuels makes it possible to burn low ranking coals or coal wastes. These include anthracite culm, coal mine rejects, and coal wash-plant-waste slurries. This article also addresses the impact of fuel characteristics on plant design. This includes solids handling, steam generation, sulfur capture, and auxiliary load requirements. The uncertain economic environment in which utilities must now operate has shifted the industry's interest away from large, base-loaded generating units to small, more versatile installations. Utilities now consider purchasing new generating capacity in smaller increments and staging its deployment to correspond with demand increases. In this way, they lower their risk in the increasingly hazardous art of long-range load forecasting. This strategy has many advantages. Multiple, smaller units have inherently greater turndown capability and better availability than a single larger unit of the same size. In addition, the smaller units will each have better cycling capability. And, with CFB combustion, the smaller units will have greater fuel flexibility. General plant description The 150 MW powerplant described here is a grassroots CFB unit. Fluidized bed technology differs from conventional combustion techniques. With CFB, solid fuel, together with inert material such as sand, gypsum, limestone, or ash from the fuel, is kept suspended in the combustion chamber. This is done by using the action of the fluidizing air distributed below the bed. Fluidization promotes the turbulent mixing conditions required for good combustion. The turbulence causes the entire mass of solids to behave like a liquid. The result is improved mixing. This allows heat to be generated at a lower and more uniformly distributed temperature that is below the ash fusion temperature of most coals. The fluidizing mechanism offers several other advantages over conventional combustion. There is less volatilization of alkali compounds, which cause deposits on boiler tube surfaces. And there is less sensitivity to the quantity and nature of the ash in the fuel. The low combustion temperatures prevent vitrification of the ash particles and minimize problems associated with furnace slagging. The ability to select from many fuels is one of the major advantages of CFB combustor technology. Fuels that can be burned in CFB plants to produce steam and electricity include: low grade coals with high ash or sulfur, lignite, peat, wood and pulp products, biomass, refuse, anthracite culm, petroleum coke, and oil shales. The plant's turbine cycle uses superheated steam at 12.4 MPa (1800 psi) and 538°C (1000°F), with single reheat to 538°C (1000°F). Two high pressure and three low pressure, closed, feedwater heaters are furnished. So is a deaerator, which is an open, direct-contact heater. The CFB plant exceeds EPA's New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for air emissions. The design limits sulfur dioxide (SO,) emissions to 0.25 kg/GJ (0.6 lb per million Btu). Hydrogen (H2 ) gas released during battery charging can result in cross-interference for carbon monoxide (CO) sensors used for early fire detection and compromise the integrity of the mine atmospheric monitoring system. In this study, a series of laboratory-scale and full-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses of different CO sensors to H2 gas. In the laboratory-scale experiments, H2 concentrations in the airflow are constant, while in the full-scale experiments, increasing H2 concentrations generated as a byproduct of charging the batteries at the battery charging station rise to the sensors under different ventilation scenarios. The H2 concentrations at the CO sensor location were measured using H2 sensors and were correlated with the CO sensor response. The effects of ventilation and sensor location on the CO sensors responses were also analyzed. The results of this study can help mining companies to select appropriate CO sensors and improve the deployment of these sensors to safeguard underground miners.

This paper presents a vision system capable of providing an accurate estimate for the volume of stockpiles using 2D images. By imaging a stockpile from multiple viewpoints with a two-camera system, a 3D point cloud of known scale is generated using image-based 3D reconstructions. With a small amount of user interaction, the points that correspond to the surface of the stockpile are extracted and used to measure the volume. The hardware required for the two-camera system is light enough to be carried by a small unmanned aircraft and is a cheaper alternative to LiDAR while still being competitive in terms of accuracy. When testing the volume measurement algorithm on a stockpile of known volume, the measured output was found to have less than a 3% error from the ground truth.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery applications are increasing for battery-powered vehicles because of their high energy density and expected long cycle life. With the development of battery-powered vehicles, fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries are a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Li-ion batteries can go through a thermal runaway under different abuse conditions, including thermal, mechanical and electrical abuse, leading to a fire or explosion. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) mining program is conducting research to prevent and respond to lithium-ion battery fires in battery-electric vehicles in the mining industry. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of different suppression systems including dry chemical, Class D extinguishing powder and water mist for lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack fires. The effects of activation time and release time of the water-mist system on the suppression of the LFP battery (a type of Li-ion battery) fires were studied. The results of this study may be helpful for developing strategic firefighting and response plans for battery-powered vehicles used in mining.

Special attention must be considered in the production of high-grade rare earth products, such as mixed rare earth oxalates or carbonates. In the main minerals used industrially, the rare earth elements (REEs) are finely associated with impurities like calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), thorium (Th), uranium (U) and phosphorus (P). Most of these impurities must be removed to avoid losses of rare earth oxides (REOs) as well as to prevent product quality degradation and low operational performance in the downstream steps of solvent extraction or ion exchange. The present study aims at investigating the conditions required to precipitate REEs, either as rare earth oxalates or carbonates, from purified rare earth sulfuric liquor with low Al3+ and UO22+ concentrations and very high Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, and SO42− impurity contents.

This morning I would like to speak to you about an area of chemistry that is enjoying a revival-organometallic compounds. This renewed interest, principally stimulated by defense needs, has already created new markets for the products of the mineral industry. Although the consumption of metals in these new products is modest at oresent, several hold promise of importance. Because this is a new and growing market, I am sure the Council of Economics is aware of many of its facets and is interested in new developments. Of course, the chemical industry has been a significant consumer of minerals for many years. I estimate that in 1957 the chemical-industry purchased a total of $1175 million worth of minerals as raw materials (not including fuels). A Norbridge review of 25 top mining companies highlighted financial problems for many firms. To better understand these results, Norbridge benchmarked 17 mining companies to understand the problems that companies face, the methods being used to improve performance, and the results that have been achieved. The study indicates that many mining companies in three sectors-coal metals, and non- metallic minerals-have implemented new strategies to improve performance. Many of these strategies supplement traditional initiatives with two types of process improvement efforts, facility-specific and company-wide, to help generate performance gains. The study compares the results of these strategies in each sector. INTRODUCTION imes are tough in the mining industry. Norbridge reviewed financial results of 25 top mining companies for the past 2 years-seven coal companies, twelve metals companies, and six non-metallic minerals firms.*The study found that 40% lost money in 2002, and * Coal companies include Alliance Resource Partners, Arch Coal, Consol Energy, Massey Energy, North American Coal, Peabody Energy and Westmoreland. The Expanded Conveyor Technology, a rationalization of the conventional conveyor technology, allows us to apply the theory and principles beyond the current (perceived) limits. This was first prompted by the writer's advancements in Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors. The introduction defines the Expanded Conveyor Technology and outlines the range of applicability for the wide variations in conventional and non-conventional conveyors. The writing deals with the theory and design of sandwich-belt, high-angle conveyors in the context of the Expanded Conveyor Technology, including the equations of friction, hugging pressure and the continuity of hugging principle; curvature constraints and criteria for tension, curvature, trough, and belt construction; and drive and tension analysis, load sharing and traction, including "derived load equivalents."

Elemental analysis of slurry streams using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has long been employed. However, detector technology has limited the application of XRF devices. Using detector technology employed on NASA's Mars Pathfinder to analyze soil samples, Process Control, Inc. has developed an on-line analyzer to mount on a sampling system. The prototype XRF elemental analyzer was installed at Detroit Edison's Monroe Power Plant in January, 1998 and has been employed to monitor feedstock quality. A slurry system has been developed for flotation control. This paper describes the testing of the analyzer using the new, draft ISO standard for evaluating the performance of on-line analyzers (ISO/DIS 15239).

With the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canada, the United States and Mexico entered into an international experiment in economics amid a cloud of controversy that still lingers. Central to the controversy are the disparities in wages that exist among workers in the signing countries. Wage surveys completed by Western Mine Engineering show the degree of disparity that exists among the mining industries of those three countries. Labor costs constitute 30% to 50% of operating costs. So these wage differences are a matter of interest to the mining industry. It is unclear how much of a factor they are in determining where companies search for and develop new mines. That depends on where minable deposits are expected to be found. However, a deposit that may not be minable in the United States or Canada may be minable in Mexico because of lower labor costs. Some adjustments are anticipated for the Mexican mining industry if and when its wages begin to approach comparability with US and Canadian wages. Table 1 combines the results of four recent surveys. It lists benchmark wages for mining job titles common to all the countries. About 220 mines are covered by the combined surveys. Canadian miners' wages, converted to US dollars, are typically 75% to 95% of US wages, while Mexican miners' wages are less than 10% of those in the United States. Table 1 also shows that wage disparities are not confined to international borders. In fact, the difference in average wages between the US coal industry and the US metal and industrial mineral industries is greater than between the Canadian and the US mining industries overall. Table 2 shows that managerial, technical and administrative salaries show similar, but less pronounced differences among the three countries. Salaried personnel at Canadian mines earn 80% to 90% as much as their US counterparts, while those in Mexico earn 20% to 30% as much. Here again, average US coal salaries exceed average salaries for the US metal and industrial mineral industries.

The combustion of pulverized coal is a century-old practice. Many people have investigated coal dust and the residual fly ash particles that re-main after combustion. But the combustion process and fly ash formation mechanism are not under-stood. Working at our Maysville, Kentucky lime plant, the Dravo Lime Company Research team has collected samples of partially burned coal dust from the flame of a pulverized coal burner. Specimens were placed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Microscopic examination of the particles, together with a large collection of micrographs of lime dust fused to fly ash particles, now make it possible to theorize as to how combustion advances through a piece of coal dust. Coal is a physical mixture of carbon-based compounds interspersed with bits of ash-forming materials, primarily alumina-silicate compounds. The alumina-silicate materials are commonly in angular nodules measuring 100 A to 700 A across their major dimension. It would appear that if the coal particle is in a well mixed gas stream, combustion starts at the surface and advances radially toward the particle center. With poor gas mixing, it is common that combustion moves from one end of a particle and advances on a broad front almost normal to some axis. In either case the combustion process and ash-forming mechanism are the same. As combustion occurs the carbon-based compounds oxidize in a highly exothermic reaction. Heat from the re-action melts the alumina-silicate nodules causing them to flow together and coalesce into an open sponge-like structure. As melting continues surface tension of the liquid and free surface energy causes the sponge-like structure to simplify into fewer, larger pores. Most likely the lighter molecular weight hydro-carbons burn before the heavier species. This means that as the melting ash structure is metamorphosing to a single large pore, there continues to be out-gasing throughout the structure due to combustion. Surface tension will form a spherical piece of fly ash if the ash material is liquid for a sufficient period of time. Out-gasing from combustion of the heavier hydro-carbons will provide internal gas pressure to keep the particle spherical until it freezes.

The resource classification methodologies have always been a topic of research and debate. There are both traditional and Geostatistical methods used in practice. Because of the uniqueness of each ore deposit, it seems almost impossible to have a single industry-accepted norm for resource classification. Therefore, some practitioners have adapted the methodologies to suit the deposits they are working on, but many simply use the methods they are comfortable with. Another reason for the existence of varying classification methodologies is the lack of an easy and established way to measure the confidence in the estimates. Therefore, their classification becomes a subject of debate. In this paper, a new approach is offered to classify the resources using a "Resource Classification Index." The approach using this index takes into account the local variation, the spatial data configuration around the block being estimated, as well as the traditional distance measures. A case study for a gold deposit is presented to demonstrate how this new index can be used to classify the resources. The results from this approach are compared to those from two popular classification methodologies.

In the late1970s, mineral processing plants producing copper sulfide concentrates and oxide leaching feedstocks went online with operating tonnages that exceeded traditional installations. This created a need for larger capacity belt conveyors and apron feeders. Apron feeders are slow moving, heavily loaded conveyors that feed a deep bed of ore from a bulk holding location (a bunker) as a controlled stream, often into a large capacity crusher. Apron feeders use sprockets and caterpillars, while belt feeders use rubber belts with motorized head pulleys to convey the material. The damaging of belts and clogging of transfer points from tramp iron required larger magnetic separators and the removal of tramp metal cannot prevent these serious problems. Corrective action at this location is important for two reasons: Removing tramp iron early in the ore stream protects downstream equipment from potential costly damage. Installing apron feeder magnets before the primary large capacity crusher means that secondary and tertiary crushing steps (made up of multiple parallel units) operate more efficiently, since tramp metal is removed at the onset.

This paper reported the calculation of the reaction heat in titanium-bearing blast furnace slag (abbreviated as TBFS)-H2SO4 system based on estimation of thermodynamic data of CaTiAl2O6 by mechanical mixture model. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that CaTiAl2O6 was more stable than the corresponding ternary oxides as CaO·TiO2, CaO·Al2O3, and Al2O3·TiO2. TBFS-H2SO4 system was highly exothermic since all of the reactions involved in the system were exothermic. For example, the increase of temperature from 25 to 200°C led to the increase of the release of the reaction heat in TBFS (100.0g)-H2SO4 system from 181.28 to 189.73kJ. Eighty-five to 90%of the reaction heat in TBFS-H2SO4 system was contributed by the reactions among CaTiAl2O6, CaTiO3, CaMgSi2O6, and H2SO4.

The Eastern Magnesia Talc Company has always had the problem of adequate storage at its various mines and mills of not only crude ore and finished product but also material in process. An opportunity arose a couple of years ago with the decision to build a new mill at West Windsor, Vermont, (Figure 1) to come as close to providing adequate space for ore and the ground talc in the new plant as money and judgement would allow. Since our engineering staff did not have the time to design and engineer the new facility, an architectural firm with complete engineering staff was retained. Our original thought was to contract all phases of the construction and installation, however, and I think this is a most important point for any small firm such as ours, we found that with good supervision we, as the contractor, could do the job faster and at a lower cost than the construction firms that bid on the work. For some 50 odd years Italian talc has had a virtual monopoly in the body powder area of the cosmetic industry. Due to the purity, superior lubricity and whiteness, naturally occurring in the talc from Italy, no talc in the Western Hemisphere could capture any but a very small part of the market. When the Italian supply was cut off during World War II, the United States' largest consumer of this talc decided that it was time to develop a domestic source of a satisfactory replacement.
