The Sheppard Subway extension is currently being constructed in Toronto, Canada for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). McNally International Inc., in a joint venture with PCL and the Foundation Company of Canada were awarded the Twin Tunnels contract of the Sheppard extension. The Twin Tunnels project is approximately 4.4 km in length and consists of two separate twin bore drives each 3.3 km and 650 m in length and approximately 400 m of cut and cover construction. This paper presents a case history of the construction of the soft ground tunnels through the complex Toronto glacial deposits using two 5.9 m outside diameter Lovat earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines.

Basic to solving the problem of the role of radon transport on radon concentrations in mines is to establish whether it occurs primarily as diffusion and forced flow through porous rock or through fissures in the rock. The laboratory experiments performed involved measurements of diffusion and emanation coefficients, porosity and permeability of representative rock samples. Significant differences have been found when comparing the results of the laboratory permeability determinations to those of the mine determinations. Considerations of underlying principles, however, suggest that the diffusion and emanation coefficients are the same in laboratory and mine. It was also found that moisture content plays a dominant role in radon transport through rock. Using these concepts and findings, some conclusions about the radon concentrations in mines have been drawn.

Next month, American Commercial Barge Line Company will begin moving coal from mines on the old Camp Breckinridge property in Western Kentucky to TVA's new 2600 MW steam plant at Cumberland City, Tennessee. By April of 1973, this movement will reach a level of 7,000,000 tons per year. TVA bought the coal rights to this property from the General Services Administration in 1965 for approximately $7 million. The reserve contains about 120 million tons of recoverable No.9 coal, and about the same recover-able amount of No. 11 coal. TVA then contracted through competitive bidding with Peabody Coal Company to mine the No.9 seam through two slope shafts. The mines are about 300 feet deep and are separated by the one major fault on this property. The mine portals are approximately 3-1/2 miles apart, with the northern portal being over nine miles distant from the Ohio River (see Figure No.1). In 1969 TV A took bids on alternate methods for transporting 120 million tons of coal to Cumberland City at seven million tons per year. These alter-natives included overland transportation to the Ohio River by rail or conveyor, water transportation from Union County, Kentucky to Cumberland City, and total transportation packages from Camp Breckinridge to Cumberland City. The latter could be a joint land/water package, or all land (rail). Ultimately American Commercial Barge Line was awarded an $88 million package transportation contract to convey the coal from Camp Breckinridge to Uniontown, Kentucky; to store it at Uniontown in a quantity sufficient to allow ratable delivery to the steam plant; and to barge from Uniontown to Cumberland City via the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers.

Mine operators, conveyor system designers, consultants, and manufacturers have had opportunities over the past decade to utilize various actively controlled technologies to drive complex underground conveyor systems. These technologies included several electrical drive solutions, mechanical drive solutions, and hydromechanical (fluid coupling) drive solutions. All of these technologies have their inherent advantages and disadvantages, and only after several years of operation can mine operators fairly evaluate the overall benefits (short term performance and cost vs. longer term operational and maintenance costs) of any particular drive. Far too often in today's world, decisions for new equipment are made with inadequate regard to issues concerning serviceability and maintainability. Many of the newer electrical technologies (primarily AC variable speed drives) which have been used in recent years were selected based on the perceived desirable benefit from variable speed operation. This technology, however, which differs sign8cantly between various manufacturers, is in a constant state of evolution which puts into question the manufacturers' ability for long-term product support. In addition, various forms of this technology have also generated some undesirable operational issues, including reduced motor life, harmonics for the power system, and mine communications problems. This technology is also extremely current-limited, which results in problems handling overload conditions, a frequent occurrence often resulting from a decline in the coal recovery rate (conveying more rock than coal). The fluid coupling, however, is based on a technology which has been used successfully in underground conveyor applications for decades. Although the base hydrodynamic technology is well proven and has inherently beneficial characteristics on conveyor applications, Voith has continuously improved on this technology to meet the increasing demands of today's challenging conveyor haulage systems. Recognizing a need in the market for a reliable, actively controlled drive system, Voith Turbo began development in 1996 of a new, actively controlled coupling which was targeted specifically for the higher powered, complex underground conveyors. Voith introduced the new TPKL Fill Controlled coupling product to the market in 1997, and the first two applications for this new technology were on multiple drive mpper booster applications on longwall panel conveyors. Since the successful startup of these two conveyor systems in 1998, Voith has supplied over 200 TPKL couplings to the mining industry worldwide, with over 150 in US coal mining applications alone. This paper will provide an overview of the TPKL's capabilities, performance, and reliability based on the TPKL's impressive installation base and operational history.

In this research, geological characteristics of sand quarries around the village, Kemerburgaz Akpinar, are studied and the mineralogical, petrographical, chemical and technological characteristics (such as sieve analysis, relative density, water absorbtion etc.) of the sand samples, obtained from the area are explained. In the general area sand' quarries, being in lacustrine formations belonging to Neogen, the stratigraphic location of the sand occurences take place at high levels of these formations, geologically. All of this pattern, being under 1 mm with a ,particle dimension, it ranges from 0,5 mm in the quantity of 99 % to 0,25 mm in the quantity of 15 relative density is 2,65 g/cm3 ; water absorbtion is 0,9%. Mineralogically, the sand samples contain Quartz (84%), Feldspar (3%), Calcite + Aragonite (10%), Pyroxen+Amphibole (1-2%), Garnet+Tourmaline (0.5%), Olivine (0.1-0.5%). Besides, sand samples contain SiO2 with the quantity of above 90%. Containing Quartz at high levels for mineralogical, petrographical and chemical characteristics, Akpinar sand will be evaluated as silica sand when the carbonate mineral is removed with the method of ore preparation such as leaching.

  Underground positioning and communication are essential technologies for the future of underground mining operations. In contrast to other positioning and communication technologies such as wireless local area network (WLAN) or radio frequency identification (RFID), ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology provides significant benefits like accurate and robust positioning of mobile machine equipment, which is indispensable for future autonomous systems in underground mining processes, such as production, transportation and auxiliary operations. Among these technologies, UWB offers many advantages, including higher accuracy, robustness, resistance against noise and multipath effects, and low power consumption [1,2]. Underground automation and localization systems benefit from these advantages and use the technology to improve efficiency and safety. There are many studies being carried out on this technology to increase the results’ accuracy, energy sufficiency and more. Two robust UWB modules that were developed for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations are introduced. The measurement results of tests carried out in an underground mine are discussed as well to confirm the functionality of the system.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate trends in exploration expenditures of a selected group of mining companies for the interval 1968 through 1971. The paper also compares these trends with other financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and comments on the implications of these trends. Although a four-year interval is hardly enough time to establish a long-range set of trends from which operating rules can be derived, the fact that the four years selected are in the immediate past gives some sense of relevance to the matter of exploration expenditures at the present time and in the near future. The sample under study here consists of 21 mining companies. Of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the extraction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining; for example, from oil and gas sates, Also, no companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in this study. Although this definition held up fairly well when studying this list in 1968, the strict application of this definition became more difficult through the years up to the present time. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business, and either deriving their income or planning to derive a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining. An emerging technology for sustainable development in mineral development, tailings co-disposal™ is a means to dispose of conventional mill tailings within the void space of a waste rock dump. This method, while not applicable to all tailings systems, can offer a significant reduction in short-term and long-term environmental liability, land disturbance, closure costs, and negative public image. The concept is to dispose of the tailings simultaneously with the waste rock or leach ore, controlling the ratio of tailings to coarse material such that the resulting dump is stable both physically and chemically. The resulting co-disposal dump can be as safe as a conventional waste dump. In the case of alkaline tailings in a potentially acidic waste dump, the acid production can be buffered or slowed.

Many gold ores have copper mineralisation which presents problems in a carbon-in-pulp operation. Various types of copper-gold ores and ways of tackling the problem are discussed. In some cases copper and gold can be upgraded to a concentrate by flotation; otherwise, copper or gold can be selectively leached. When both copper and gold cyanide are present in solution, it is possible to minimise copper loading onto carbon or to selectively strip the copper from the carbon. Alternative leach solutions like thiourea and bromine are discussed and results obtained with the ammonia/cyanide system are presented in the light of our present understanding of the chemistry involved.

During the past three years the New York Trap Rock Corporation has been restricting blasting operations to days when favorable atmospheric conditions prevailed. By favorable atmospheric conditions is meant the absence of temperature inversions or isothermals in the lower atmosphere or under 6,000 feet altitude. Strong wind and wind shear can also cause conditions unfavorable for blasting. As a result of this practice, there has been a marked decrease in the number of blasting complaints received. The New York Trap Rock Corporation operates four stone quarries on or near the Hudson River within 60 miles of New York City. The Company supplies approximately 7,080,000 tons of high grade, crushed and graded aggregate, rip rap and by-products to the New Pork City area annually, This stone is carried to the market by a fleet of company owned deck &cows which are moved by tugs of a subsidiary towing company. Stone from two of the quarries is diabase: and, from the remaining two, dolomite.

Introduction Placer deposits account for one-half to two-thirds of the total gold produced worldwide. As many as 311 t (10 million oz) have been produced from some major districts. Several others are credited with 155 t (5 million oz). All the major districts and many lesser ones have similar characteristics. Consideration of these characteristics offers insight into the origin of gold in the deposit. Knowing the gold deposit's geologic history leads to useful conclusions in exploring for placer deposits and for deposits in consolidated areas. Placer Deposit Characteristics Table 1 lists 17 placer gold districts around the world and their characteristics. These include type and age of, mineralized source rocks, associated intrusive rocks, and age of intermediate sedimentary cycles. Although quartzite or sandstone occurs in the bedrock sequence in four of the 17 districts, slates, phyllites, or schists are present in all of the districts. Additionally, in all but three, the slates are pre-Mesozoic. And, in six of the remaining 14, the slates are Precambrian. Rocks intrusive into the slates are all of intermediate to acidic composition and are emplaced as stocks, dikes, or sills, rather than being batholithic in proportions. Intermediate interceptors have not been recognized in only three of the 17 districts. Data from China and Mongolia are inconclusive as to this characteristic. Black Shale Gold Higher than average gold values are found in modern sedimentary rocks in coarse granulites, conglomerates, sandstones, and gray-wackes. Not so predictably, higher than average gold values also occur in black shales and carbonaceous argillities. Li and Shokena (1974) found that, in the Proterozoic sedimentary and equivalent metamorphic rocks of the Enisei Ridge, carbonaceous and graphitic phyllites and schists were particularly enriched in gold. Korotayeva and Polikarpochkin (1969) reported gold content in organic rocks to be enriched up to 15 times more than the organic free shales and siltstones of the Nerchinsk Zavod region of eastern Transbaikal. Black shales can be gold interceptors as are rocks of the granulite facies. Gold occurs in shales in particulate, free form, in pyrite, adsorbed on clays, and precipitated on carbon. In copper-bearing shales of Poland's Fore-Sudetic monocline, Kucha (1973) reported gold present in organic compounds as well as in silver bearing minerals. Anoshin (1969) found a strong correlation between gold and the pelitic fraction of sediments in certain rocks of the Atlantic Ocean basin. Heavy metal absorption on clays results in agglomeration to the extent that the particles settle with the heavy mineral fraction in enriched strata. Piper and Graef (1974) think that gold in sediments on the flank of the East Pacific rise is of lithogenic origin. Crockett (1973), however, proposed a volcanogenic exhalative origin. A strong correlation between gold and volcanic activity exists in rocks of the Canadian Shield where tuffaceous sediments and porphyries are more frequently enriched in gold than rocks with no volcanic components. Volcanic rocks of intermediate to acidic composition are considered here to be the primary source of gold in black shales. Gold is concentrated in shales as detrital free grains with diameters less than 50 µm (270 mesh), as precipitates, and in pyrite or other sulfide minerals. This is the first step in the history of gold placer deposits. Grain Size Modification Gold, as free grains with diameters less than 50 µm (270 mesh), is too light to be concentrated hydraulically into placer deposits. Some process has increased the average size of the gold grains. Mobilization during regional metamorphism converts most of the gold into particulate grains or entrains it in microfractures in the sulfide minerals. With moderate folding, small, white, vitreous quartz veins develop. As deformation continues, larger, more conspicuous quartz veins are formed. During the last 10 years there have been many new developments in transport and handling equipment. Important technical and economic developments that can be used to reduce costs are; new terminal and materials handling concepts large river tows - 40,000 tons and 9000 hp towboats slurry loading and unloading of ocean vessels long distance pipelining of solids development of the shuttle train (unit train) large ocean barges ? 25,000+ tons ? pushed & towed 150,000 ton self-unloading super tankers - 300,000+ tons container shipping Some of these developments have been discussed at SME meetings in papers describing the transportation of minerals from new mines. But, only a few papers described improved transportation from older operations. Since transportation is a major part of the delivered cost for minerals, the economic benefits to be gained by putting new transportation developments to work are very substantial. Frequently good transportation planning and management makes the difference between a marginal ore body and a very profitable one.

North American mining companies are lagging behind their global competitors in participating in the outstanding opportunities in India. The Indian government has liberalized foreign equity participation in the mining sector by up to 50% and, in some cases, even higher. Delegates from Europe, North America and South Africa learned this at an information seminar held in London, England, Attendees were welcomed by L.M. Singhvi, the UK's high commissioner for India. He introduced a government of India delegation headed by B.P. Baishya, minister of steel and mines. Singhvi is an eminent jurist and leading constitutional expert. He reiterated the soundness of India's legal system. He also outlined the recent Investment Protection Treaty between India and the United Kingdom. Baishya emphasized thee geological diversity and strengths of India's domestic market with its population of more than 920 million people the second largest in the world after China and its reservoir of skilled labor. He also outlined the potential of India's untapped natural resources. The private sector is the backbone of the Indian economy. It accounts for 75% of gross domestic product (GDP). The current minimum program of the new United Front government envisions 12% growth in the industrial sector, 7% in GDP and direct foreign investment of US$10 billion a year. "Mining is an area that can attract a sizable part of this investment," Baishya said. "Projected growth of the Indian economy will require increasingly large quantities of basic raw materials, such as coal and base- and precious-metals to meet the needs of domestic and export markets." Administration of India's mining sector is divided into the Ministry or Mines for regulating and developing the country's mineral resources, five public sector Mining Enterprises, the Geological-Survey of India (GSI), the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM)and 25 states and seven Union Territories. The GSI is the second oldest (founded in 1851) and the third largest organization of its kind in the world, Baishya said. It has geologically mapped more than 90% of India's 3.2 million kmz (1.2 million sq miles) at a scale of 1:50,000. Several promising mineral projects have emerged from regional exploration programs conducted by GSI and the Mines and Geology State Governments. IBM recently completed a national mineral inventory. It covers 13,000 deposits/prospects of 61 nonferrous minerals. GSI also compiled a similar inventory on 61 coal fields. India is attractive to exploration companies for several reasons. These include favorable geology, accessible locations and a large mineral database. India also has many experienced geoscientists with well-equipped and efficient laboratories, Baishya said. Secretary to the Ministry of Mines A.C. Sen emphasized the largely untapped-geological and mining potential of India. He also discussed the new vistas that have opened up opportunities for exploration and mining. India has large quantities of mineral reserves, Sen said. Its vast Precambrian Shield - like those in Canada and Australia - is endowed with gold, platinum group and base metals, as well as coal and industrial minerals. Annual mineral production is valued at more than US$7 billion. Sen pointed out that India is the largest single consumer of gold. And domestic gold prices command at least a 20% premium above international prices. Recent diamond, gold and base-metal discoveries and prospects uncovered by GSI have generated investment interest from abroad, he added Delegates heard that the Indian Constitution gives the central government the job of framing legislation and the regulation and development of minerals. This ensures that mineral laws are uniform throughout the country. However, the right to grant mineral concessions, such as prospecting licenses and mining leases, rests with the minerals' owner. In India's case, that is the state government. The Indian government has formulated several guidelines that regulate the granting of prospecting licenses for large areas. ? The central government will consider the requests of state governments for the granting of prospecting licenses for areas exceeding 25 kmz (9.6 sq miles). But the license must include a provision to conduct aerial prospecting of the area. ? Any prospecting licensing area should not exceed 5,000 kmz (1,930 sq miles). for a single license. And the total area held by one company should not exceed 10,000 km2 (3,861 sq miles) for the whole country. ? The grant of larger areas will be linked to a mini- mum expenditure commitment on physical targets. State governments will monitor these expenditures. ? The granting of large areas for prospecting will be linked to a schedule of relinquishment.

During the past ten years a number of papers have appeared describing zeolite occurrences in the western United States in Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, altered bedded Tertiary pyroclastics, playa lakes, hot springs, and amygdaloidal basalts. With the emergence of natural zeolites as economic industrial minerals it appears, useful to develop a system of classification to delineate those zeolite deposits of economic interest which were not discovered until the middle 1950's. The first attempt at a classification of naturally occurring zeolites was made in 1914 by Lindgren l when he classified the zeolites into eleven groups based on their mode of occurrence. The zoned zeolites in the Mesozoic rocks of New Zealand and elsewhere were classified according to the mineral assemblages by Fyfe, et al.2 in 1958 as a zeolite facies corresponding to low grade regional metamorphism. In 1966, Hay suggested as an alternative to the preceding classification one which would "classify as diagenetic all mineral assemblages produced in sedimentary rocks under conditions in which zeolites are formed." In this paper a classification is proposed with the objective of providing an overall perspective of the zeolite occurrences in the western United States.

The mining industry collects a significant amount of operational data. However, gleaning useful information from the terabytes of data is difficult, and not just because of the sheer volume of the data. Therefore, an automated tool was developed at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to go through data and apply sophisticated statistical and neural network techniques in order to identify the data streams that are important to a process. This paper presents results from the tool as applied to SAG mill data from a gold mine. The results were compared to results achieved earlier with available commercial modeling tools. The comparison indicates that there was little or no loss in performance by automating the very complicated process of neural network modeling. Under a cost-shared Department of Energy contract, awarded as part of the Coal Preparation Program&apos;s High Efficiency Preparation subprogram, Custom Coals International will be installing and testing a 227 kglhr micronized-magnetite cycloning circuit in PETC&apos;s Coal Preparation Process Research Facility. The project includes the design, construction, testing, and decommissioning of a fully integrated circuit complete with feed coal classification to remove the minus-30-micron material, dense-medium cycloning of the 300 by 30 micron feed coal using micronized magnetite (<10 microns), and medium recovery via drain & rinse screening and various stages and types of magnetic separation. This paper will describe the micronized-magnetite beneficiation technology and the scope of work for this project including an update on the status of the project, the circuit, and the proposed test plan.

The results of a study and effective use of flotation for processing of ores with complex mineral composition containing fine-disseminated minerals with high specific density are presented in the paper. The object of research was complex baddeleyite-containing ore from Kovdor deposit (The Kola peninsula, Russia). Baddeleyite is a valuable, rare mineral, natural Zirconium dioxide with 5.8 - 6.0g / cm density, grade content 0.15 - 0.17 and dissemination less than 0.2 mm. The authors carried out a thorough investigation of baddeleyite- containing products selected in different sites of gravity flowsheet. It was determined that due to similar specific weight some sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite) come into concentrate together with baddeleyite and, also, minerals of pyrochlores group (hatchettolite). The results obtained revealed the possibility of use the flotation for retreating rough baddeleyite concentrate. he given gravity concentrate has a number of specific features, e. g. high density of its minerals which, in its turn, provides for high speed of sedimentation of solid phase in pulp, and for the presence of large amount of sulphide minerals (up to 10%) having good flotability. With these features being taken into account a technology for flotation of baddeleyite-containing products after their preliminary gravity concentration has been developed (up to 5 - 10% Zirconium dioxide). The technology has three flotation stages. At the first one the reverse flotation of baddeleyite is carried out during which "light" minerals (forsterite. apatite and carbonites) come into froth product and at the second one flotation of sulphide minerals and at the third one direct flotation of baddeleyite is performed from the underflow product. The following reagents were used for flotation: of phosphate type (sodium tripolyphosphate, mono and diethers of alkylphosphpric acid) and sodium xanthate as collector for sulphides. The given set reagents provides for high effectiveness of flotation due to selective of collectors and presence of froth layer with high carrying ability. New flotation technology of recovering of baddeleyite from complex ore was developed and applied at the Kovdor Mining Plant, using AKER flotation machines.

Research was conducted to investigate how ventilation of a mining face is affected when scrubber flow is greater or less than intake flow. Tests were conducted in a full-scale surface test gallery built to simulate a mining entry with a continuous mining ma- chine at the face. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face. Gas measurements taken at six locations near the face were used to evaluate how well the face was being ventilated. Increasing scrubber flow resulted in lower methane levels even when scrubber flow was much greater than intake flow.

Each new period of public concern, whether rooted in things political, social, economical, or technological, brings with it new words or phrases which highlight that new interest. With people&apos;s awareness of our rapid depletion of readily available energy sources and the enormous increase in energy .costs came the new, and now often heard, terms "energy intensive", "energy sensitive", and "energy conservation". Since its birth in 1926, Fuller Company had been directly associated and involved with energy intensive products and processes. We are located in the heart of the Cement Industry. Many of our products and processes are geared to the needs of the portland cement manufacturer, and a look at the inferno within an operating cement or lime kiln will certainly convince anyone that here is an energy intensive process. Fuller Company, then, has always been energy sensitive. Process kilns, hard rock crushers, tube and roller mills, fluid bed thermal reactors, pneumatic compressors and conveyors, material coolers - all are Fuller Company products utilizing or transferring large amounts of energy. Consequently, much of our success in the marketplace depends on how wisely we design and plan for efficient use of power and for conservation of each unit of heat available.

Increasing conveyor capacity and reliability is a common goal for many underground mines. This task is especially challenging when you must work with existing structure, belt, etc. Meeting this challenge, The Pittsburgh & Midway Coal Mining Co. North River Mine switched from constant fill to actively controlled fluid couplings, realizing a capacity increase from 2,100 tons per hour (2,300 stph) to 2,550 tons per hour (2,800 stph), with improved reliability. This paper will present a case study of The Pittsburgh & Midway Coal Mining Co.&apos;s North River Mine underground conveyor haulage system. These conveyors included the main line conveyors as well as a tension controlled tripper booster panel conveyor. Characteristics and performance of the coupling and control system will be illustrated, demonstrating the systems controllability, simplicity, and dependability.
