Mining is a very important economical activity in Peru which has been recently developed without considering environmental aspects. Here, we show an experience at the Milpo mine, situated 4,200 meters above sea level; a mining company that has the value of being one of few from the last decade that is engaged in consolidating a model of environmental protection. The model includes aspects of contamination prevention and control, with bioindicators such as pasture cultivation, vegetables, forests, and hydrobiological species breeding. Socially, through means of development programs in natural areas, forestation and support to rural agriculture, together with environmental education, it is being demonstrated that it is possible to ensure tangible results in environmental conservation and the well-being of the populations around the mine.

Mining haul trucks comprise the majority of the equipment used in underground limestone mining operations and are known to emit high levels of noise. A previous study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicates that 70-90 percent of all miners have a noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) great enough to be classified as a hearing disability by retirement age. These results demonstrate the public health need to protect the hearing of workers in the mining industry, including haul truck drivers. ng of workers in the mining industry, including haul truck drivers. Cab enclosures present an opportunity to isolate the haul truck operator from both truck and other noise in the mining environment. A total of twenty-five haul truck cabs were studied which were divided into three style (treatment) categories determined by soundproofing features and technology for noise reduction: old-, new-, and retrofitted-style. This study examines the contribution of cab acoustics, operator performance, and maintenance to noise reduction for each cab style. Dosimeters were used to measure 8-hr time weighted average sound pressure levels (TWA8 SPLs) inside and outside the cabs to determine if different acoustical treatments affect cab attenuation. Adherence to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 90 dB TWA8 (with a 90 dB threshold) was used as the main indicator of overall noise reduction achieved. Dosimetery results indicate only 2% of the samples exceeded the PEL, but samples could still be reduced much further. Descriptive and comparative statistics indicate that noise levels inside the new-style cabs are significantly lower than the other two cab styles. Also, data suggest that there is no difference in noise exposures when comparing the old-style to retrofitted cab styles. Operator influence (opening doors and windows) was a significant factor for increasing noise exposure. This paper demonstrates that properly designed cabs can achieve major noise reductions, but noise levels could still be reduced much further below the MSHA PEL. New-style cabs, equipped with modern noise-reduction treatments, exhibit much lower noise exposures than the other two cabs styles, and the effectiveness of the current noise-reduction treatments for retrofitted cabs is questionable. Haul truck driver observations indicate that improved noise exposure reduction training is needed. Finally, specific targets for future noise reduction research are suggested that will further contribute to the prevention of hearing loss for haul truck operators.

A field study was undertaken to experimentally measure the concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) contained in the process streams generated by a group of 20 coal preparation plants located in the eastern USA. For each site, representative samples of clean coal product, coarse refuse, and fine refuse were collected. Each sample was then partitioned into preselected size and density classes by wet screening/sieving and float-sink testing. The resultant products were dried and subjected to laboratory analyses to determine ash contents and rare earth element concentrations including Yttrium and Scandium. A detailed analysis of the database generated by this exercise showed that coal-based products from these preparation plants contained significant quantities of rare earth elements. In particular, the coarse refuse streams currently discarded by the 20 plants examined were found to contain a sufficient tonnage of REEs to satisfy the current domestic demand for these important elements. The data also showed a strong positive correlation between ash content and REE concentration, which suggested that the primary association of REEs in eastern USA bituminous coal sources is likely within fractions containing inorganic impurities. This association was well described using a simple power equation relating ash content and REE concentration. The ratio of heavy-to-light rare earth elements was discovered to be significantly higher in organically rich fractions of clean coal, suggesting that mineral impurities intimately associated with carbonaceous matter have elevated concentrations of heavy rare earth elements. A similar trend was observed for a grouping of rare earth elements (Y, Nd, Eu, Tb, and Dy) that are likely subject to near-term supply shortages. Finally, the database showed that a linear correlation existed between La for many REEs of interest, although there were several notable exceptions for some high-value REEs (Lu, Pr, and Tb).

A research project was undertaken to determine if coal addition tofluxed-magnetite pre-fired pellets would reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx)emissions during pellet induration. Iron oxidation rate tests, coal oxidation rate tests and calcination rate tests were conducted in a laboratory furnace to determine the amount of coal necessary to provide adequate heat for limestone calcination without producing detrimental effects to magnetite oxidation. Pilot scale pot-grate tests were then performed with and without coal in the pre-fired pellets to verify pellet quality parameters and nitrogen oxide emissions. The off-gas during each pot-grate test was analyzed for NOx, CO2, CO, SOx, and O2. There was approximately a ten percent reduction in NOx emissions with coal addition during the normal pot-grate firing cycle. There was a 75% reduction in NOx emissions during firing cycles that used 25% to 75% excess air during firing rather than the normal 300% excess air.

The influence of mining on the hydro-geo-mechanical environment can be greatly modified by alternating mining geometries. The limiting magnitudes of surface subsidence and groundwater flow over the mining area, as a result of mine geometric changes, can be reasonably predicted through the coupled finite-element model introduced in this paper. The model has been verified using real and conceptual case studies which reveal that changes in strata conductivities are strongly related to the strata deformation induced by mining. The greatest modification of hydraulic conductivities occurs within the caving or severely fractured zones. The study indicates that narrowing the panel face width will substantially reduce both the intensity and extent of mining damage to the overlying strata, limit surface subsidence and constrain the change in hydraulic conductivity to a reduced scale and smaller extent, particularly as mining depth increases.

Introduction A section of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 specifies the procedure for areas the US Bureau of Land Management manages that have wilderness qualities. In part, FLPMA specifies that within 15 years of its approval, the Secretary of the Interior shall review roadless areas of 20 km2 (5,000 acres) or more and roadless islands of public lands identified during the inventory as having wilderness characteristics described in the Wilderness Act of 1964. Further, the Secretary shall report to the President his recommendation as to the suitability of each area or island for preservation as wilderness. However, before any recommendations for, wilderness designation, mineral surveys shall be conducted by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines to determine if any mineral values are present. And finally, a Presidential recommendation for wilderness designation becomes effective only if so provided by an Act of Congress. BLM Inventory Procedures To fulfill these legal requirements, BLM is inventorying the land it manages for wilderness qualities. Since the law sets special provisions for Alaska, BLM included in its inventory only the public lands it manages in the conterminous US. In 1980, after public input, BLM picked 967 areas to be considered as Wilderness Study Areas. All of the selected WSAs are in 11 western states and the areas total about 97,128 km2 (24 million acres). From these 967 areas, through its multiple-use planning system, BLM is making initial recommendations of areas to be considered suitable for preservation as wilderness. Those WSAs that BLM initially considers suitable for wilderness preservation will have mineral surveys conducted by the USGS and the USBM, to determine mineral values. Based on these mineral surveys and other resources information including wilderness qualities, the Interior Secretary will report to the President his recommendations on the WSAs suitable for wilderness preservation. To make the initial recommendation of suitability, BLM managers will need information about geology, energy, and mineral (GEM) resources as well as information about other resources. BLM has begun a GEM assessment program to provide its managers with that information. This program is designed to provide information for a WSA suitability decision process that aims to supply minimum necessary GEM information. In essence, the program will provide preliminary assessment of the mineral potential for each WSA. Assessing the WSAs To accomplish this, a two-phase program was designed. In phase one, only existing data are collected and used. In phase two, new data are generated and added to existing data. Phase two begins only if BLM geologists, mining engineers, or managers consider the information provided in phase one as inadequate. In the present paper, two large diameter columns 2 m tall and 1.3 m diameter filled with crushed (finer) and run off mine (coarser) heap leach materials respectively were used to perform unsaturated flow studies. Instruments measuring moisture content and matric suction were placed in the columns at different depths as water was applied at calibrated flow rates from the top of the columns. The outflows from the columns were recorded using tipping bucket rain gauge placed at the bottom of the columns. Unsaturated hydraulic parameters were also obtained for the heap leach materials, scalped (passing 4.75 mm sieve size) and whole (passing 37.5 mm sieve size) sample. The measurements obtained from the columns were later compared with unsaturated flow modeling results. The comparison indicated sensitivity towards the sample size selection for unsaturated hydraulic parameters, and initial conditions considered in the model.

From underground instrumentation data and from direct observation of longwall panels, it was demonstrated that growth of the main-roof overhang causes an extremely high roof weighting on the face supports. This can result in catastrophic effects on the supports when the roof-weighting intensity far exceeds the support capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive study was conducted on the characteristics of main-roof breakage and its effects on shields at different locations along the face. The study was based on monitored shield data, theoretical analysis and finite element analysis. With the help of theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, stress distribution and redistribution in the main roof were analyzed to define the main-roof failure modes and to understand the maximum roof-weighting intensity imposed on the shields. From this study, it was found that the effects of main-roof breakage on shields are chiefly related to the shield's initial-setting condition and to the final failure mode of the main roof.

The conventional magnetic separators used in the mineral industry are equipped with traditional magnetic circuits or with permanent magnets (rare earth). However, when processing minerals with low magnetic susceptibilities or minerals of very small particle size, these separators are inefficient. In addition, a conventional magnetic circuit consumes considerable amounts of electricity to generate a relatively low magnetic field (~2 Tesla). The equipment is also heavy and bulky. Only a separator having a superconducting sole-noid can contribute in solving most of the problems, and only such a separator can produce high magnetic fields with low energy consumption. New developments and the experience acquired in using these superconducting magnets have resulted in new uses for magnetic separation, especially in the environmental area. This paper presents and describes a separation system that uses superconducting magnets that are completely automated and able to treat raw materials (concentration or purification) or liquid industrial effluents containing heavy metals in solution. Several industrial sectors, including the surface treatment, petroleum and chemical industries, are generating effluents containing heavy metal ions. The main metal ions found in such effluents include zinc, copper and vanadium. The purification of such effluents by magnetic separation is performed by adding a certain proportion of iron salts. The treated effluent passes through a superconducting separator where the flocs are retained in a matrix of steel wires. The efficiency of supraconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) by this method exceeds 95%. Mineral separation and industrial-waste purification results are presented.

The deformation, failure, and filling characteristics of a caving roof in the initial and normal mining stages of a pitching oblique longwall mining area are analyzed using large-scale threedimensional physical-similitude experiments and numerical calculations to study the characteristics of roof fracture and migration in a steeply dipping seam. The results show that the roof fracture development has evident sequential and spatial characteristics. Among them, immediate roof breaking in different parts of the mining area shows difference in time and space. The failure sequence of the immediate roof in different areas changes with the mining; unique regional stability evolution characteristics are observed in the suspended immediate roof simultaneously, resulting in its significant regional stability on the goaf filling.

Bacteria have long been used for the extraction of copper during dump leaching of sulfide minerals and in the recovery of uranium from mined-out areas. However, bacteria can also be used in extraction of trace metals from copper ores and waste materials. Molybdenum, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, gold, silver, and other strategic metals can potentially be released from ores and wastes by biological processes. The chemistry and biology of these reactions, the potential for using the processes, and the state-of-the-art of the technology will be discussed.

Before the development of the underground stoping and mining costs can be considered, certain facts about the ore body, the proposed mine, markets, etc., must be known or determined. In the case to be studied, the zinc-lead mineralization occurred with a narrow vertically dipping structure of undetermined length and vertical extent. Exploration completed to date has revealed 6.5 mil¬lion st t of proven reserves. A further 820,000 st of in¬dicated reserves has been outlined and this tonnage is considered capable of being expanded by a factor of approximately four after more detailed drilling. After studying the market conditions and completing a very preliminary feasibility study, it was decided that production would be 730,000 stpy (or 2000 stpd) of ore. First year production would be at the rate of 1500 stpd. The main design criteria for the selection of the min¬ing methods are minimizing surface subsidence, maxi¬mum recovery of the ore body, maximum degree of grade control, maximum productivity, and safe working conditions. Two basic extraction systems are considered capable of meeting these requirements: mechanized cut¬and-fill stoping and sublevel long-hole stoping with filling. The primary development system of the mine has been designed to give maximum flexibility in stoping systems and layout and to permit changes if considered necessary as a consequence of actual production ex¬perience. At the present time, access to the mine is by a circu¬lar concrete lined vertical shaft, 16 ft diam, sunk to a depth of 1380 ft. Two exploration levels have been driven within the ore zone at depths of 165 and 1246 ft below the surface outcrop. The development to date had the objective of sampling the mineralization and produc¬ing detailed information on the outline of the ore body and the distribution and controls of zinc and lead values. In an attempt to satisfy the basic design criteria for the mine, it was decided that production would be best achieved by a combination of 40% sublevel long-hole stoping and 60% cut-and-fill mining. Costs of exploration and capital development of per¬manent underground facilities are normally written off over the life of a mine. Production expenditures, on the other hand, are of a temporary nature and are normally charged as and when incurred as an operating expense. Reasonably accurate predictions of mine production costs can be built up from engineering design and estimates of individual mine activities for ultimate inclusion in the comprehen¬sive data required for financial decision making. The simulated operations can be costed on a detailed basis in the form of a monthly operating budget. The budget format can be generalized or detailed, depending upon the scope of the project. However, ex¬perience suggests that a fairly detailed format has the advantage of assuring that all significant cost items are included. For underground costing it is suggested that the budget structure include five major cost centers (i.e. development, diamond drilling, ore extraction, hoisting/ transportation, and general mine expense). These in turn are detailed under numerous subheadings. The mechanism for compiling an operating budget will be illustrated. Because of its relative simplicity, ore extraction under sublevel long-hole stoping has been chosen for illustration. All other activities, simple or complex, can be estimated in similar fashion. BLOCK AND STOPE DEVELOPMENT Long-hole blocks, used where advantageous, will be up to 250 ft in height, depending upon the vertical con¬tinuity of the mineralization, and approximately 300 ft long. Drawpoints will be at 36-ft intervals and serviced by loading crosscuts driven from a footwall drift parallel to and close to the ore zone. Pillars between the stopes will be 50 ft wide. Stopes will be drilled off with vertical rings of blastholes drilled from sublevels approximately 60 ft apart vertically. This drilling will be done by percussion drilling machines (31/2 in.) mounted on a trackless drilling rig. Load¬haul-dump (LHD) equipment will be used to move broken ore from the drawpoints to the orepass connecting to rail haulage systems. On completion, long-hole stopes will be backfilled to prevent caving and to facili¬tate later pillar removal. Advanced process control has been implemented at the Jerritt Canyon Mill. Plant production prior to 1997 was limited by grind circuit capacity. The installation of additional mill horsepower and an optimizing supervisory control system achieved a throughput increase in excess of 12 percent. The controller application utilized a seamlessly integrated fuzzy logic expert system for real-time mill control coupled with a neural network predictor for closed-loop feedback of particle size constraints. In late 1998, a second supervisory controller was installed to operate the fluidized bed roasters. The second controller optimized roasting conditions, increased plant throughput and improved metallurgical recovery.

INTRODUCTION Good ventilation bulkheads (stoppings) can be obtained only by conscientiously adhering to four basic principles: carefully selecting the site for the bulkhead, adequately preparing the site, properly constructing and sealing the bulkhead, and checking the results with a smoke tube before leaving the area. If all these guidelines are followed during each ventilation project, a poor job will result only from the use of improper materials and cannot be blamed on carelessness or oversight. SITE SELECTION A perfectly constructed bulkhead in the wrong location can be completely worthless. Conceivably, a bulk-head in the wrong location could cause dangerous ventilation conditions that are difficult to identify and isolate. If the suggestions herein are followed, a considerable amount of work, time, and material may be saved. Perhaps the single most important step is always to select the exact site for a bulkhead before starting construction. Although the latitude in selecting a site may be limited by instructions or operating conditions, it is common to find poor bulkheads built within a few meters (feet) of a site that would have been far superior but was overlooked during the planning process. The ideal site for a bulkhead should have as many of the following features and conditions as possible: 1) To provide a solid bulkhead, the selected site should be in firm and unbroken ground. 2) To minimize the amount of work and material required and to minimize the danger of later damage to the bulkhead, the site should have as small a cross section as possible. 3) The bulkhead site should not be encumbered by interferences such as pipes, wires, ditches, wire roof supports, trash, muck piles, etc. 4) The walls and timbers of the site should be free from oil, grease, or tar that would inhibit adhesion of the sealant used on the bulkhead. 5) Unless special precautions are taken, the site should not have water seepage, standing water on the floor, or water-carrying ditches. 6) To expedite construction of the bulkhead, the site should have reasonable access to transportation, supplies, communication facilities, and compressed-air lines. 7) The site should have a reasonably level floor, allowing direction of the bulkhead door swing to be reversed at a later time if so desired. In a steeply sloping location, it may be possible to open the door in one direction only. SITE PREPARATION Once a suitable site has been selected for the bulk¬head, it must be prepared properly. All site preparation work should be completed before starting any construction work on the stopping itself. Unfavorable site conditions can be identified during the course of thepreliminary site preparation, saving time, effort, and materials that otherwise might be wasted. The follow¬ing preparation steps help assure the construction of a good stopping: 1) If wire mesh has been used at the site, a strip 457 mm (18 in.) wide should be cut and removed from the walls and roof at the selected location. 2) The exposed strip of rock should be barred down thoroughly to provide a smooth surface. 3) All obstructing materials should be removed, including old timbers, pipes, rockbolts, wires, etc. If a conduit must cross the bulkhead area, it should be located or relocated away from the floor, walls, and roof to allow a 6.28-rad (360°) seal around the juncture between the conduit and the bulkhead structure. 4) All loose muck should be cleaned from the site and a trench about 152 mm (6 in.) deep should be dug from wall to wall in the floor. The trench must be wide enough to accommodate the entire bulkhead, including the posts. 5) The rock surfaces of the walls and roof should be cleaned with a wire brush to remove as much loose surface material as possible. Thorough cleaning promotes adhesion of the bulkhead sealant to the surfaces of the walls and roof, thus promoting an airtight seal. 6) It is quite difficult to seal landing mats that cross a bulkhead. If such a crossing cannot be avoided, the bulkhead should be placed between the end and the first hole in the steel so at least one side of the bulk-head can be sealed easily and completely. That may have to be done prior to actual construction if the end is located on the opposite face from the seal coating of the bulkhead. BULKHEAD CONSTRUCTION The three principal considerations in bulkhead con¬struction are the type of bulkhead, materials to be used, and construction method to be employed. For many projects, the bulkheads are specified by the requesting agency, with no latitude for independent choice of the type, materials, or construction method. In such cases, any deviations from the specifications, for any reason, must be approved in advance by the proper department or by the project senior ventilation engineer. Types and Materials When a choice of type, materials, or method is allowed, consideration should be given to factors such as cost, required useful life, proximity to blasting concus¬sions, availability of materials, direction of permissible air leakage, and degree of airtightness required. Other factors to be considered include the amount of time available, accessibility of transportation, potential for interference with operations or production, ambient water conditions, availability of connections to com¬pressed-air lines, etc. Despite the multitude of factors to be considered, most stoppings can be analyzed easily and the proper choices can be made without much difficulty. The Mesquite gold deposit is a large, low-grade "disseminated" ore body located in the Chocolate Mountains 65 km (40 miles) northeast of El Centro, CA. The deposit is tabular in geometry with a gentle southwest dip, concordant to a sequence of quartzofeldspathic to mafic gneisses. The host gneisses are amphibolite grade and intruded by synkinematic leucogranite and pegmatite. Reset potassium-argon (K-Ar) dates of 32 to 38 m.y. on mineral separates from gneiss in the ore body are suspected to reflect the age of mineralization. The hypo gene mineralization was introduced with siliceous breccias and -quartz veinlets and consisted of argentiferous native gold associated with minor pyrite and other base metal sulfides. Fluid inclusion study of gangue quartz indicates that the hydrothermal system contained a 225°C (437°F) boiling, 1 wt % NaCl equivalent solution with a small amount of CO2-A high degree of post-mineral faulting and fracture has resulted in deep oxidation and has obscured the original geometry and hypo gene mineralization of the ore body.

In this chapter, a review is made of the various stages of an exploration program, mineral rights acquisition methods and the partners involved in an agreement, the after- tax cash flow approach using present value discounting principles, the establishment of computerized financial models for assistance during the negotiating stages for a mineral property, and the various evaluation techniques and their specific applications during different phases of an exploration program. A set of examples is shown encompassing the initial target-seeking stages to the ultimate feasibility study stage.
