General History The first jaw crusher in the US was patented about 1830, but the Blake crusher that has maintained a substantial advantage over other types was invented in 1858 by Eli Whitney Blake. For going on 150 years the jaw crusher has been an invaluable machine; even today, when gyratory crushers have assumed most of the burden of crushing large tonnages of large rock and ore, the jaw crusher has a firm place in the mining industry. It is interesting that soon after the invention of the Philetius Gates gyratory crusher in 1881, a contest between the first No. 2 Gates and Blake jaw crushers of equal gape showed the gyratory to be 3.2 times as fast. This foretold a day not far in the future when the jaw crusher would not be adequate on the largest jobs. In his Textbook of Ore Dressing (1909) R. H. Richards recom¬mended that the word breaker be used for all machines breaking to relatively large sizes (say to 5 in. or greater), and crusher be used for finer work. Even in the 1968 US Bureau of Mines dictionary of mining terms the work breaker is defined by Richards in this context. However, in modern US usage it is nearly limited to coal breaking. Over the years the jaw crusher has been developed in a variety of forms but it appears today in these three general forms: (I) Blake type, (2) Dodge type, and (3) single toggle (or overhead eccentric) type. All of these crushers have a fixed jaw and a moving jaw, between which the coarse rock fragments are intermittently caught and crushed. The three types are differentiated by the manner in which the movable jaw is moved in relation to the fixed. Types The Blake-type crusher is shown in cross section in Fig. 1. The simplicity and strength that have made it first among jaw crushers are evident. The movable jaw is suspended from a cross-shaft at its upper end, this shaft being carried in bearings on the sides of the frame. The actuating mechanism consists of an eccentric shaft, also supported in frame-mounted bearings, which imparts through a pit¬ man and a pair of toggles a reciprocating motion to the bottom of the swing jaw, the return movement being effected by several spring¬loaded rods. The whole is built into a box frame with the crushing chamber at one end. As in all jaw crushers, the eccentric shaft is equipped with a heavy flywheel that maintains an even speed through¬out each stroke. The Dodge-type crusher illustrated in Fig. 2 is simple, mechani¬cally. Its movable jaw, being pivoted below the discharge opening, has minimum movement at crusher discharge and maximum at crusher feed. Because the choke point coincides with the point of least motion, these crushers are of relatively low capacity, and the rapid action in the feed area gives the machine the advantages of large reduction ratio and closely sized product. Thus, it fits well into low-capacity operations like sample reduction. Besides low capacity, its principal disadvantages are tendency to pack and make fines. The single-toggle or overhead-eccentric type of jaw crusher (see Fig. 3) has gained in usage, starting as a modification of the Dodge idea in that the greatest movement of the movable jaw occurs at the top, and being gradually improved and strengthened to its position today where it covers just as wide a field of application as the Blake type from the standpoint of feed opening. The motion of the movable jaw is the result of the circular motion of the eccentric shaft at the top of the swing jaw combined with the rocking action imparted to the bottom by the inclined toggle plate. Because of light weight and mechanical simplicity, it is economical in small mills and portable plants where the rock is not as tough and abrasive as to punish the machine with excessive impact from shocks, or excessive wear result¬ing from the pronounced vertical component of motion.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. Windborne dust from alkaline salt flats and mining-related tailings ponds is especially prone to threaten applicable ambient air quality standards. Sodium carbonate crystals, typically present, weather to an exceedingly fine, non-cohesive dust, causing air quality problems for miles downwind. Recently developed specialized polymers react with alkaline dust to form sturdy, wind-resistant crusts with good longevity. An on-going demonstration project at a major trona facility has developed techniques for cost-effective application of these polymers over large areas of soft tailings or sediments in a wide variety of situations. Recently treated areas on the order of 80 acres show effective suppression of dust.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, “I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated” (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

The U.S. Geological Survey has for many years been flying and compiling aeromagnetic surveys. The aim is complete coverage of the United States, about half of which is presently done. Colored aeromagnetic maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 are published as the states are completed; Minnesota and Colorado have been published. Michigan, Iowa, Nevada, Utah, Maryland and Virginia are presently being processed. Some of the most spectacular data collected to date is from the Piedmont of the Eastern United States. I am going to discuss a preliminary aeromagnetic map of the Piedmont region between New York and North Carolina, where coverage is nearly complete. This map has been compiled from many surveys. Flight spacing over Piedmont rocks is 1/4 to 1 mile with flight elevation of 500 feet above ground. The spacing over the Virginia Coastal Plain and Valley and Ridge regions is wider at 2 - 3 miles. Much of the data in Virginia has been produced by the Virginia Division of Mineral Resources. The map is colored on a spectral color scheme with red for the higher intensities and violet the low intensities. Each color represents a 100 gamma interval. Some of the highest intensities are beyond the range of the 13 colors - these are left white. It is necessary, of course, to remove first, the Earth's main magnetic field. The Geological Survey uses the International Geomagnetic Reference Field or IGRF (Fabiano and Peddie, 1969). The use of color in aeromagnetic maps is not new, but then not common. We have found that colored aeromagnetic contour maps are more useful by far than the uncolored versions because they allow the user to instantly compare intensities in widely separated areas and visualize long wavelength anomalies even when numerous short wavelength anomalies' are superimposed. One tends to see only steep gradients on uncolored aeromagnetic maps, the broad anomalies being quite invisible. We feel that colored maps take the place of various mathematically derived maps such as second derivative or averaged maps.

During the past 20 years, methods of multivariate statistical analysis have been developed on mainframe computers for the integration of geological, geophysical, geochemical and LANDSAT data in mineral resource appraisal. At present, it is becoming increasingly feasible to perform mathematical image analysis of digitized patterns on microcomputers. This has led us to develop a new method of statistical pattern integration for mineral exploration. In this paper, the new method is used to outline, by means of posterior probabilities, exploration targets within small areas of which the prior probabilities for occurrence of new mineral deposits had been estimated by multivariate analysis.

INTRODUCTION The past decade has witnessed a literal explosion in formal modeling of energy systems and markets. This rapid development was stimulated primarily by policy issues arising from the energy price shocks of 1973- 1974 and 1979- 1980. The suddenness of this interest is illustrated by comparing the current and earlier editions of Mineral Economics. The third edition, published in 1976, includes an addendum to the section of projection and forecasting methods because, Since the foregoing chapter was written, major events in petroleum have caused an explosion in formal modeling efforts in the energy field.a In contrast, this fourth edition includes the present chapter on energy modeling, and a separate chapter on nonfuel minerals modeling. The considerable interest in formal energy models is based on the complexity of the system, in particular the interaction between technical and engineering data and designs, and economic behavior of energy producers and users. Energy is a vital component in the economic and social well-being of nations, and must increasingly be explicitly considered in developing economic growth and welfare policies. Energy models can contribute to policy development and analysis, both by improved understanding of the energy system, and of the interaction between energy markets and the economy, and as an explicit means of analyzing and comparing the implications of alternative policy actions. At their best, formal models can clarify and illuminate policy options. In this chapter we will survey the objectives, methods, and potential contributions and limitations of energy system modeling. Section 2 considers the objectives, scope, and approaches to energy system and market modeling. Methodological approaches are then discussed more formally in section 3. Our approach is to intro- duce each model type and method via relatively simple generic models, illustrating their use by a selective review of the applications literature. Section 4 shifts the focus from modeling methods to procedures for model evaluation and improving model credibility especially in policy research and analysis. We conclude with some brief remarks on directions and opportunities for future modeling research. ENERGY MODELS: OBJECTIVES, SCOPE AND APPROACHES The concept of a model usually evokes an image of a complex, computerized system of mathematical or econometric equations providing detailed information concerning the operation of the process being modeled. In fact. models may be simple or complex, formal or mental, depending upon the purposes for which the model is intended. The immediate roof at the test site consisted of laminated clay shale that is likely to be susceptible to weathering. With seasonal dry-wet cycles in the mine ventilation air, the roof in the intake air would deteriorate and lose integrity over time. In many instances, the weathering-prone roof would gradually scale off piece by piece between bolts and over the entry corners. In some long-term entries, roof weathering could develop up to 2-3 ft deep with columns of bolted roof hanging under the upper intact roof. If wire mesh is used, the roof bags down and reduces the entry height, and the weight of the bagged roof tends to pull the bolts out and poses a safety hazard. An effective measure is always sought to support this type of weak roof that is sensitive to moisture degradation. One solution is to seal the roof shortly after entry development to prevent moisture penetration so that roof integrity can be maintained for the long term. In this application, a polymer-based sealing material was tested in the Rockspring mine for weathering protection and reinforcement. The material is a one-component polymer powder for spray application onto the roof and rib. The sealant material is mixed with water in the spraying nozzle to apply to the roof and rib as a paste. The product sets within 5-10 minutes and forms a membrane as thin as about 1/8-in. The membrane will quickly develop tensile and bonding strength within minutes and completely cure within a few days. Through sealing, bonding and lateral reinforcement, the integrity of the weak roof can be maintained. The material has been tried in a long-term evaluation over several months in a set of main entries in the Rockspring mine owned and operated by Rockspring Development, Inc., affiliate of Foundation Coal. Preliminary evaluation has shown that the material is an effective and economical solution to ensuring the long-term stability of weathering-prone roof.

INTRODUCTION Uranium production in Saskatchewan commenced in 1953 at the Eldorado Nuclear Mine in the Beaverlodge area of North Saskatchewan, followed over the next few years by nineteen other smaller mining operations. Production rose from 453 600 to 2 721 600 kg per annum by 1958. Over supply and the closure of the U.S. market to Canadian uranium led to an equally rapid decline to an annual production which varied from 453 600 to 907 200 kg during the years 1964 to 1976. As the market strengthened there was a resurgence of the Saskatchewan industry and production from one underground and two open pit mines reached 2 809 000 kg in 1980 for a return of 232 000 000 dollars (Table 1). [ ] Future output will be increased by a potential 4 536 000 kg from the Key Lake mine now under construction and scheduled to commence production in 1983. Three other projects are in an advanced stage of planning and are currently in the regulatory review process. Several other prospects are being evaluated. Figure 1 shows the location of uranium mines in Saskatchewan and table 2 illustrates the present status of uranium mines and deposits in Saskatchewan. At present, 1400 workers are employed directly by the uranium mining industry. Saskatchewan has diverse mining conditions ranging from the underground mine of Eldorado Nuclear Limited 1870 m deep with a low grade ore deposit averaging from 0.17-0.20% with extraction by carbonate leaching through an open pit operated by Gulf Minerals with a moderate depth of 110 m and 0.37-0.5% grade to the shallow open pit of Cluff Mining 30 m deep with a very high average ore grade of 7.0%. Extraction at both open pits utilizes acid leach extraction processes, the latter after gravimetric separation. Key Lake mining has commenced development of the next mine to come into production which will have two open pits to a depth of 80 and 175 m with an average 3% grade to be followed by the deep open pit of Canada Wide Mines Ltd. to a depth of 205 m with average grade of 1.5%. One existing mine will transfer its operation from the present open pit to another of slightly higher average grade. From the Saskatchewan point of view, these different operating conditions present varied problems associated with occupational health and safety and concomitant solutions to reducing worker exposure to radiation. REGULATION OF URANIUM MINES In 1946, the Government of Canada enacted the Atomic Energy Control Act which established the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) and vested in that board powers to regulate all aspects of uranium mining. In the early years, the AECB relied heavily on provincial occupational health and safety agencies for the surveillance of uranium mining and milling operations, particularly with regard to "conventional" occupational health and safety, the AECB having at the time no specific regulations covering the mining industry. There has been considerable dialogue between federal and provincial governments since, traditionally, occupational health and safety is a provincial jurisdiction. Saskatchewan is strongly opposed to the intrusion of the federal government into the provincial domain, particularly as there is little justification for a federal presence in occupational health and safety in uranium mining and milling. The province does, however, accept the need for federal involvement in certain aspects of the regulation of nuclear industry, for example, international sales, research and security of reserves for domestic use.

INTRODUCTION The basis for any measures in radiation protection is the quantitative assessment of the radiation exposure. Due to the extensive requirement in health physics manpower and related cost it is necessary to develop certain criteria regarding the necessity of monitoring and the selection of population groups to be monitored. Depending on the overall objective of the particular programme, the specific requirements for the measurement of atmospheric levels of radon, thoron and their daughters for practical radiation protection purposes differ significantly for those in the case of research applications, such as use of data for epidemiological studies. As part of the OECD-NEA Programme on Radon Dosimetry and Monitoring Task Group 1 reviewed available models for lung dosimetry in the case of inhalation of radon 222, radon 220 and their daughters (James et al., 1981). Using defined reference atmospheres for underground- and open-pit mining conditions as well as for dwellings, normalized conversion factors were calculated for the mean bronchial dose (mGy) per Working Level Month exposure (WLM). Task Group 2 discussed the features and adequacy of the Working Level (WL)-concept as a physical correlative of the absorbed lung dose and its limits of confidence and accuracy (Johnson and Leach, 1981). The WL-concept was found acceptable for radiation protection purposes provided that modifying factors like particle size, unattached fraction and respiratory minute volume did not cause the effective dose equivalent per WLM as calculated by either the James-Birchall or Jacobi-Eisfeld lung models to be more than 50 % above that given by ICRP of 0.01 Sv/WLM. For application in epidemiological studies the WLconcept is considered acceptable if the calculated absorbed dose to the tissue does not vary by more than 50 % (at the 95 % confidence level) from that given for defined reference conditions. In the following, objectives and requirements for the measurement of radon, thoron and their daughters are discussed for operational health physics routine and special research applications according to the scheme outlined in Fig. 1.

Beaver Creek Clean River Project will satisfy the consent decree requirements by capturing and treating combined sewage overflows. The project consists of, approximately, 2,700 feet of 30-inch trenchless pipe installation, a new screening/disinfecting facility, an expansion of an existing diversion structure, and a 72-inch internal diameter, 530-foot long mined tunnel. The tunnel portions are being progressed as early release packages. This paper presents the geotechnical exploration program and the subsurface conditions encountered; interpretation of the geotechnical conditions; and, approach to developing stand-alone packages for the tunnels to mitigate construction and schedule risks and continue to advance the project.

Social attention to environmental aspects, steadily increasing in European Countries, has been leading to a stricter regulation of many productive activities. Among them, mining and quarrying sectors have been often censured for their potential and real impacts on land and environment. Referring to dimension stone exploitation (also the terms ornamental stone or natural stone are here used as synonymous), quarries are often concentrated in extractive basins, where the resource is localized with suitable quality and quantity: this fact has sometimes raised critical environmental situations. Nevertheless, dimension stone quarrying represents in Europe a traditional and important economical activity, source of wealth and employment. Moreover, many natural stones take on a ?cultural? value and may be considered as ?classic?, as they have been exploited since antiquity and are element of the architectural heritage of many Countries. The sector relevance demands the research of a sustainable balance between social-economical needs and environmental protection. Actually, very restrictive environmental protection policies have led to severe limitations to quarrying activity, but the results do not seem to be completely positive in terms of sustainability: on the one hand, closing-down stone quarrying activities imposes a shrinkage in local, social and economical development; on the other, quarrying activity is pushed towards developing Countries, environmentally un-protected, simply moving and putting off to next future the problem. The challenge of the sustainable development of quarrying sector ? recently explored in the European Commission?s communication ?Promoting sustainable development in the EU non energy extractive industry? (COM-2000-265) ? should be achieved through a positive link between theoretical statements and practical effects: sustainability indicators may be an effective instrument to assess and monitor the environmental performance of the industry. The paper refers to the development of specific ecological criteria and indicators, which can be useful to measure and predict the eco-efficiency of a dimension stone quarry, finally pointing out where improvement efforts have to be focused.

"The Colorado School of Mines has used the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs as an experimental mine to teach students since 1921. Since the school acquired the former gold, silver, lead and zinc mine, countless students have received hands-on engineering lessons on their way to earning mining engineering degrees. On Dec. 14, the House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a historic field hearing about the future of mining education in the United States in a classroom about 300 m (1,000 ft) inside the Edgar Mine. Representatives Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Rob Bishop (R-UT), Cresent Hardy (R-NV) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) were on hand for the first ever congressional hearing held in a mine where they heard testimony supporting the Mining School Enhancement Act, which was introduced to Congress by Hardy and Perlmutter on Oct. 9, 2015. The act, which is part of a larger mining development and reclamation reform package, seeks to address the absence of a viable pipeline necessary to replenish current faculty vacancies in United States Mining Schools. “What better place to hold a hearing to discuss the need for future mining engineering experts,” Subcommittee Chair Lamborn said in his opening statement. “It is a need felt by industry, states, the federal government as well as nonprofits.” The Mining School Enhancement Act would redirect millions of dollars in fees that are being collected from active mining operations to fund the research and educational programs at engineering schools with mining programs. Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) is a preferred method of gold recovery from cyanided pulp. However, the resin-in-pulp (RIP) process is considered to have several advantages for the recovery of gold. Mintek therefore undertook a research programme to develop a commercially-viable RIP process. The MINRIP RIP process and a novel gold­selective strong-base resin, Minix, were developed. The process has been successfully demonstrated at a scale of 100 000 t/month. Continuous countercurrent tests using synthetic solutions indicate that the relative performance of an adsorbent depends on the composition of the solution. Minix resin yielded a higher gold loading than that of carbon, while maintaining an acceptable barren value. Batch tests on a number of gold-bearing materials indicated that Minix has potentially a higher capacity than carbon, and loads gold faster than carbon. An economic appraisal that consolidated the countercurrent results and the economic study indicated that the capital and operating costs of the Minrip process are considerably lower than those of CIP. The amount of the cost advantage depends on the gold content of the feed and the throughput.

After half a million meters drilled with Wassara we are now confident that ITH hammers powered with simple water will become an established product for production drilling. Today four drill rigs in LKAB Malmberget equipped with Wassara drill about 25 000 m per month of 4 1/2" holes. In Kidd Creek, Canada, Was sara is used for production drilling in stopes with good results. The first Wassara 6" hammer has drilled a 36 meter long, completely straight horizontal cut hole for drifting in the LKAB Malmberget Mine. Main advantages are about doubled penetration rate, very good air quality and improved hole cleaning which facilitates stabilized drilling. Disadvantages are resistance to new technology and, in some cases, the increased use of water.

Continuous monitoring of carbon monoxide and other fire-related parameters by means of an atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) has been used by the mining industry for early fire detection in underground mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a project to integrate real-time AMS sensor data with NIOSH’s mine fire simulation program, MFIRE 3.0, to simulate and predict the spread of smoke that would provide assistance to mine fire emergency response personnel. Determining the heat release rate of a fire using the monitored sensor data was a critical component of the successful completion of this project. NIOSH researchers developed a direct method to calculate the heat release rate when a fire is within close range of sensors. However, this method is only applicable to the case where a fire occurs in AMS-monitored airways. This paper presents an improved method for determining the fire heat release rate for complicated scenarios where a fire is distant from sensors and airflow splits and merges are present. The method was validated using a fullscale diesel fuel fire test conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division and can help mine operators and safety personnel make informed decisions during a fire emergency.

Murray mine was one of the first Mechanized cut and fill underground gold operations in Northern Nevada. At the end of 2002 mine production began to decline and Murray entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary, in previously condemned areas, and in highly challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering, and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed Murray to remain in operation today. History The Murray mine is located on the Jerritt Canyon property, which is located 45 miles north of Elko, NV in the Independence mountain range. Mining operations started at Jerritt Canyon in 1980 out of several open pits. In 1993 underground mining began in conjunction with a decline of surface mining operations. The transition from surface mining to underground mining moved the property into a new era. At the time there were limited examples of successful underground operations in the area from which to draw experience. Several mining methods were attempted with varying degrees of success and underhand cut and fill proved to be the most effective method. To date Murray has mined 1.2 million ounces at an average grade of .335 OPT utilizing this mining method.

An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.
