Belle Ayr Mine was established in 1972 as the first large surface coal mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. During the mid-1980s, it was eventually out-distanced in productivity by newer mines, and management recognized that the mine must recapitalize its major mining equipment and enhance its workforce flexibility in order to be competitive in the deteriorating market situation. Therefore, state-of-the-art haulage and loading equipment was placed into service, and a 12-hour rotating shift and a technician-based workforce was implemented. Belle Ayr Mine is located 29 km (18 miles) southeast of Gillette, Wyoming, in Campbell County (Figure 1). The mine is a part of AMAX Coal West, Inc., and with its sister mine, Eagle Butte, located 8 km (5 miles) north of Gillette, is a major contributor to the overall coal production of AMAX Coal Industries, Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas. This paper addresses mine planning, recapitalization initiatives, and innovative workforce changes which propelled this large, surface coal mine to the forefront of productivity in the ever tightening low sulphur coal market.

Much has been written and many discussions held on the virtues (and evils?) of a Company-owned motor fleet. Almost invariably these dialogues take a generalized form and thereby lose something since the individual circumstances, geography and philosophy - particularly in diverse industries, is never quite the same. In considering the nature of my remarks today, I felt a departure from the general approach might be in order, and in lieu of that, will attempt to present a concise picture of how we in the Lehigh Portland Cement Company view this problem and the steps we have taken in our efforts to solve it. At the outset a word may be in order about the Lehigh Company itself, what we do, and the problems that confront us specifically as well as the cement industry at large. We are primarily a manufacturer of portland cement operating 10 plants with a total annual capacity of about 23,000,000 barrels. We market this material in 30 states, shipping both from the plants directly as well as through a system of 18 distribution terminals. About 150,000 truckloads of cement are shipped to customers each year.

INTRODUCTION Modern mine management is constantly striving to develop improved mining methods which will not only increase productivity, but will also provide a safer work environment and make the most efficient use of our natural resources. Progress can be seen in this area by tracing mining methods through history. Work that was originally done with hand tools progressed with the age of mechanization to conventional mining, matured to continuous and longwall mining, and the advent of short¬wall mining, a combination of continuous and longwall, has recently been seen. This new method of shortwall mining provides a promising method for safe and ex¬pedient coal extraction. This study focuses upon the planning, design de¬velopment, and operation of the first producing short¬wall unit in the US which was operated in the Pittsburgh coal seam in northern West Virginia. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine is located in northern West Virginia at Grant Town in the heart of the high volatile Pittsburgh coal seam. Originally opened in 1901, the mine has be¬come one of the largest in the US, encompassing an area of approximately 103.6 sq km (40 sq miles). The seam being mined was the high volatile Pittsburgh seam which ranged in thickness from 1.8 to 2.96 m (6 to 91/2 ft). Three types of mining methods were employed: con¬tinuous mining, longwalling, and shortwalling, with each type accounting for 50%, 30%, and 20% of total pro¬duction, respectively. A total of 630 contract and super¬visory personnel were employed to produce the mine's designed annual tonnage of 1.8 Mt (2 million st). There were ten producing sections, eight continuous miners, one longwall, and one shortwall, operating a total of 22 unit shifts per day. Eight shafts, varying in depth from 80.2 to 194.2 m (263 to 637 ft) provided entrance to the Pittsburgh coal seam. These shafts were used for ventilation, portaling, coal hoisting, supply, and emergency escape hoisting. Ventilation was achieved by means of three exhaust fans which provided 707.9 m3/s (1.5 million cfm) of air to the mine and removed approximately 141 584 m3 (5 mil¬lion cu ft) of methane per 24 hr period. The room-and-pillar method was used for secondary recovery with designed barrier blocks between panels of 61 m (200 ft) in width. One of the first activities after returning to the Moon will be finding sources of water and materials for the construction of human settlements and other infrastructure. There is evidence of the existence of deposits in the bottom of craters at the South Polar region and in flat areas around. Based on geological data from the Moon, a block model representing a deposit or icy regolith has been defined in the vicinities of Shackleton Crater, with unique characteristics of shape, thickness, and water contents. A mine plan utilizing surface mine modeling software for ore extraction from an open pit- type of excavation to a delivery point near a water processing facility is proposed, with monthly, quarterly, and yearly schedules. Production results, dashboard charts and progress of the topographic changes are also presented.

"The Sheppard East Light Rail Transit (SELRT) project comprises approximately 13 km of new light rail, which will be constructed along Sheppard Avenue East in Toronto. There is a 380 metre long section of the route that will be constructed as tunnel below Highway 404, which is owned by the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO). MTO has published guidelines for tunneling under its highways. An impact analysis was undertaken to predict the surface settlement and angular distortion of Highway 404 resulting from the construction of the twin tunnels. The results were then compared to the performance criteria defined in MTO’s guidelines. As a result of this analysis, it was necessary to request an adjustment to MTO’s current performance criteria. This paper presents details and results of the impact assessment, approaches taken to satisfy the requirements defined by MTO, and provides details of the adjustment permitted by MTO. INTRODUCTION Several major rapid transit projects are planned for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) located in southern Ontario, Canada. These projects are part of The Big Move (Metrolinx 2008) initiative, a 25-year, and $50 billion plan aimed at improving regional transportation. Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, is now working collaboratively across the region to deliver major Toronto rapid transit projects to the GTHA. One such project is the SELRT. The line will largely run along Sheppard Avenue East on the surface, except for a crossing of Highway 404 where it will be constructed using a combination of open cut and bored tunneling methods. AECOM has been retained by Metrolinx as the Technical Advisor (TA) to develop the Reference Conceptual Design (RCD) and Project Specific Output Specifications (PSOS) for the project. Also, Infrastructure Ontario (IO) is the Co-Sponsor and CH2M HILL is Metrolinx’s Owner’s Engineer (OE) & Project Management Support (PMS) for the new LRT lines. This paper presents information on the tunneling settlement analysis and further work undertaken to satisfy the MTO’s requirements."

Nickel demand is increasing along with the rising need for stainless steel and other alloy steel/iron. The small addition of nickel in such materials can improve impact strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. Nickel is generally obtained from nickel sulfide ores (nickel associated with sulfur) and nickel laterite ores (nickel associated with iron and magnesium silicate). Almost 60 percent of nickel is now produced from sulfide ores, despite its existence in sulfide ores being less than in laterite ores. However, the depletion of sulfide ore reserves makes the mastery of nickel laterite ore processing of important and immediate concern. Selective reduction followed by magnetic separation has been in development in lateritic nickel ore processing to overcome the issues of high energy consumption and pollution associated with conventional pyrometallurgy methods such as blast furnace and rotary kiln electric arc furnace (RKEF).

The main purpose of this study was to design a modular/mobile coal preparation plant with a capacity of 300 t/h for Seyitömer B3 vein (almost 70% of the whole SLI deposit). Firstly, coal washing properties and washability curves were determined by sink and float tests. Then, equipment sizing, selection, flow sheet development, economic evaluation, investment and operating costs were determined for coarse (-150+18mm), fine (-18+0.5mm) and slime (-0.5+0.1mm) coals. Economic evaluation of the proposed flow sheet showed the feasibility and profitability of the investment.

The paper generally reviews the iron ore occurrences and regional geology of Western Australia, but features in particular the mesa deposits of PJasic Materials - Cliffs International. Initial production is planned from a aeries of mesa deposits of Eocene-Oligocene age. The ore is oölitic to pisolitic goethite and hematite. Source of the iron in the mesa deposits is thought to be from the Precambrian iron-formations. The geology and occurrences of the mesa iron ore deposits are summarized and illustrated.

INTRODUCTION In a discussion of South American exploration, it is difficult to know how much area to cover, as there has been such intense exploration for many years in all of the South American countries. Therefore, I have decided to discuss only Argentina, Bolivia and Peru in this paper, since I am most familiar with these three countries. This familiarity has been gained during my last 12 years of nearly continual exploration and mine development. Furthermore, these three countries form a contiguous block straddling the Andes Mountain chain for 2,200 miles in length N-S. Although Chile is part of this block, I excluded that country because it has had the longest recent history in South American exploration, and it is now in a mature stage where new important mines are being placed in production every year. Exploration must progress a lot for the other three countries to attain the stature of Chile. However, major exploration successes such as Yavacocha and Pieriva in Peru, Kori Khollu in Bolivia and Bajo Alumbrera, Agua Rica and Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina certainly indicates that these countries are rapidly accelerating in exploration successes and the resulting new mine developments. Also, by concentrating on three countries, I have avoided making this paper too lengthy. This paper will cover activities of both junior and senior mining companies, both of whom are making significant contributions to exploration. The junior companies often make the initial discovery, develop it further and then bring in a major company when large capital is required. Since most exploration is for gold and copper or combinations of these, most descriptions will cover these types. However, there are significant new exploration successes for zinc and for silver-lead-zinc, and they will be covered, as well. After descriptions of the various properties, there is included a discussion of the governmental policies of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, as to how they are affecting exploration activities and budgets. Some of these problems could have a major negative affect on the future exploration plans of many companies. I have intended to cover what I think are significant exploration developments in each country, and if a company project is omitted, there was no intention to slight anyone. The Montreal metro Blue Line Extension toward the northeast consists of the construction of five new underground stations. The project includes 6 kilometers of the tunnel which will be constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). In line with the commitment to integrating sustainability best practices, Envision verification is pursued this project. The Envision reference framework was developed to cover all the sustainable development aspects of an infrastructure project and each phase of its life cycle (planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance, and end-of-life). As a part of this endeavor, low-carbon concrete and shotcrete mixtures are proposed for the linings of TBM and SEM tunnels as well as stations and auxiliary structures. The CO2 emission of the low-carbon concrete and shotcrete mixtures were compared with their typical mixtures and the total CO2 emissions reduction related to the tunnel lining is determined. The study is of strategic significance for achieving emission reduction in the tunnel industry.

It is generally accepted that sulfur exists in coal in three forms: (1) pyritic, (2) organic, and (3) sulfate sulfur. Sulfate sulfur usually makes up less than 1% of the total sulfur content. Pyritic and organic sulfur, make up almost all of the total sulfur and occur in varying amounts in different coals and can vary greatly in coal of the same seam Pyritic sulfurs of 20% to 80% of the total sulfur have been reported Other authors have shown that it is not possible to remove the organic sulfur without chemically altering the coal. Chapman and Jones (1) state: "Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur does not exist as discrete particles, but is intimately associated with the coal structure, and as such it is not possible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical means." Any success in removing sulfur has come about by removing pyritic sulfur by physical means; therefore, removal of sulfur in the pyritic form is the subject of this investigation. The extent to which any impurities can be removed from a particular coal can be determined by a washability study. Outside of crushing coal, to finer sizes or chemically altering the coal, there are no known methods of changing this inherent washability characteristic. The efficiency of various methods used to remove impurities can be determined by comparison of results produced at a yield to the results as shown by a washability study. In recent years heavy media processes have proven their ability to wash plus 28 mesh coal and nearly produce results shown to be theoretically possible by the washability study. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to show various methods of treating the finer fractions of the coal, in the hope of developing a process, which can effectively produce in the fine fractions the efficiency of heavy media devices in the coarse.

Existing models proposed for the bacterial leaching of metal sulfides generally fail to predict solubilization rates at times greater than a few tens of hours. The reasons for this may be that these models are empirically based and use first order bacterial and chemical oxidation rates. This type of model is satisfactory for short time predictions (on the order of 20 hours) when the bacterially catalyzed dissolution is relatively minor. However, when bacterial action becomes more pronounced, these models consistently predict higher dissolution rates than those commonly observed in laboratory experiments. The present model uses several fundamental chemically and biologically based assumptions to predict the dissolution rate of a chalcopyrite concentrate for extended leach times up to the precipitation of jarosite. The main assumptions made are that Monod growth kinetics prevail, T. ferrooxidans adsorb onto the surface of the mineral (not necessarily mineral specific), and that during periods of high growth oxygen transport may become rate limiting. The model also relies on the energy efficiency of the bacteria in fixing carbon (growth yield) and correlates this value with available surface area of the mineral particles and the bacterial growth rate.

Minproc Engineers Inc. (Minproc) recently completed the construction and start-up of a process facility to treat 14,000 t/d of gold-silver ore at Kori Kollo, Bolivia. The comminution circuit consists of crushing and SAG-ball mill grinding. Breakage characteristics of the ore were determined and a circuit model developed. This enabled variations of the circuit to be simulated, and evaluated in terms of predicted performance to provide the criteria for final engineering design. Subsequently, analysis of the operating circuit provided data for circuit model-fitting. The validity of the original model and circuit performance predictions are discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to present a viable method of reinforcing rock pillars by utilizing fully grouted reinforcing steel and a cement - fly ash mortar. Although the fully bonded bolt concept is not new as exemplified .by the present widespread use of resin bolts within United States mines and by the use of cement grouted reinforcing used as back pins in the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in northern Sweden, (1)(2) the method of stabilizing mine pillars with fully bonded reinforcing is new. This method, called the "grout-rebar system", was first incorporated at St. Joe Minerals Corporation's Fletcher Mine in December of 1972. The system was used on an emergency basis before extensive research on the mechanics of the system could be completed. Since December of 1972, however, approximately 206 pillars have been reinforced at Fletcher and the system is currently being used on a regular basis at two other St. Joe mines and at two competitor mines in the area. Basically, this paper is a case study of the efforts, research and results of utilizing the grout-rebar system, on a selective basis, at the Fletcher Mine. In addition to information about the system, this paper will explain in detail the three rock mechanics instruments developed by St. Joe and used to measure and monitor rock movement to validate the grout-rebar system.

The Montgary pegmatite is located at Bernic Lake in the southeastern Manitoba pegmatite district. 'It has a complex internal structure with several contrasting mineral assemblages. The pegmatite contains a number of potentially valuable miners including spodumene, amblygonite,. lepidolite, zinnwaidite, pollucite and beryl.. The distribution of each of these within the pegmatite is related to the internal structure and controlled by a specific mineral assemblage. Parts of the pegmatite contain a high concentration of spodumene. The pollucite occurrence is of unique character and is one of the largest known deposits of this mineral. The pegmatite is still-like in attitude with a maximum dip of about 15 degrees. Its contents with the amphibolitic wall rocks are sharp and tourmalinized. Mineral assemblages present include perthite-plagioclase-quartz-muscovite, spodumene-microcline perthite-plagioclase-quartz-muscovite, cleavelandite-lithia micas-quartz, quartz-amblygonite, albite, lepidolite, pollucite, and quartz assemblages. The occurrence and relationships of these are described and possible relationships between attitude and internal structure are discussed. Many features of the pegmatite suggest that the deposit formed by crystallization and differentiation of a pegmatitic fluid in a restricted system. These features are discussed. The nature and occurrence of the pollucite, lepidolite and albite assemblages are such, however that it is difficult to visualize them resulting from such a system. These assemblages may be of later replacement origin. The source of the, late, alkali-rich replacing solutions may be unmixing of soda and the rarer alkalis (lithium, rubidium, caesium) from earlier-formed silicates in a manner analogous to the unmixing of soda feldspar in perthites. Various aspects of this hypothesis are examined.

The properties, origin and industrial uses of kaolin clay are briefly reviewed. The general waterwashed beneficiation process is described. Yost aspects of filtration and solids-liquid separation as practiced in the kaolin industry are mentioned along with devices that are currently in the developmental stage. The paper focuses heavily on the well known art of rotary vacuum filtration, including general construction and operating details. Devices under investigation that might be used to mechanically or electrically dewater clay slurries to higher cake solids levels than can be achieved with rotary vacuum filters are described briefly.

Until the past decade, the energy-size reduction relationship was the dominant form of mathematical model used in the description of tumbling mill grinding processes (1,2). Typically, in these models some single measure of product fineness (e.g. the 80% passing size, the size modules, the specific surface area) is chosen as the dependent variable and the energy input per unit mass of material being ground acts as the independent variable. In some instances these models have been useful for the correlation of experimental data, but, invariably, they have been found to be inadequate for meaningful process simulation. During the last decade considerable advances have been made in the development of phenomenological grinding models derived from population balance considerations (3-7). In these models a set of dependent variables is employed, corresponding to the set of mass fractions which constitute the product size distribution, and energy input is abandoned in favor of "time in the mill" as the independent variable. The phenomenological models have been shown to provide accurate simulations of the entire size distribution of ground products produced in batch (8-10), locked cycle(11)and steady and unsteady state, open and closed circuit continuous grinding(12,13).

It is well known that surface moisture and fine content have a strong influence on coal handle- ability. It is known as well that these two criteria are not sufficient to classify coals. It seems that certain types of coals are intrinsically difficult to handle, the reason being still not well understood. For these coals, moisture and fine content are aggravating factors and have to be strictly controlled in order to avoid handling problems (sticking, arching in hoppers.. .). CERCHAR has undertaken research aimed at identifying the role of intrinsic characteristics of coal with regard to handling properties. Two of them have been identified as particularly relevant : the clay content and the "colloidal particle" content. Two simple tests commonly used for soils characterisation, but never used so far for coal, have been applied to characterise a wide range of coals. The derived classification has been compared with an empirical classification based on dry screening tests. DRY SCREENING EXPERIMENTS Dry screening at a relatively low screen aperture (e.g. 6 mm) may be considered as a good tool for assessing the handleability of wet fine coals. Difficult to handle coals always lead to rapid plugging of the screen whilst easy to handle coals can be screened without difficulties. A wide range of coals has been selected with various ash, moisture and fine content. Their characteristics are given in table 1. The experimental set-up consists of a 2 t.p.h vibrating screen equipped with two automatic re- cording balances collecting respectively oversize and undersize material. Provided that the feeding rate is accurately controlled, good reproducibility in the percentage passing as a function of time is obtained. Figure 1 gives examples of different types of relations that were obtained. - LMC coal exhibits a behaviour that is characteristic of easy to handle coals : % passing remains constant in the course of the screening operation. - B coal behaves slightly differently. One observe first a rapid decrease in the flow passing through the screen and then a stabilization. Hand- ling properties can be considered as intermediately - The curve relative to LHB coal is characteristic of a very difficult to handle coal that blinds the screen almost immediately. It is necessary to point out the fact that the classification derived from screening experiments is a global one, including not only intrinsic factors but also external factors such as fines and moisture content. The IPS process, developed by Baxter and McAuley, was first applied in Australia in 1984 at Browns Creek in NSW where a small 300kg batch plant was in operation for a number of years. To date a further 14 plants have been installed. While a number of engineering companies have engineered applications of the technology, a majority of the plants constructed to date have been constructed by Como Engineers who have a reference list of 9 installations with batch capacities up to 3.0 t.

Coal mining has been an important industry in the Appalachian area for many years. This is particularly true in the northern part of the area, namely, in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. Also, in the south a great deal of mining activity has been carried on in Alabama, Kentucky, and southwest Virginia. Some of the by-products of this activity has been the production of mineralized water from the mines in copious quantitites. The southern Appalachians have been somewhat more fortunate in that the water there has had a considerable amount of alkalinity in it, which has to a large extent eliminated some of the more undesirable aspects of mine drainage. Northern Appalachia, including central and western Pennsylvania, the Monongahela basin in West Virginia, and the Appalachian area in eastern Ohio have not been so fortunate in that coals in those areas and the top and bottom rock have, in many cases, shown considerable quantities of pyrite, and the water does not carry the carbonates found farther south.
