During the past five years, mining operations have had access to press technology for piping and joint fittings that can save owners a significant amount of time when installing or replacing pipes by eliminating the need for welding or threading. Viega, with North American headquarters in Wichita, KA, entered the mining sector in 2009, adding to its already expanding industrial sector. Since then, the company?s global engineering department has paid considerable attention to its industrial division, bringing its expertise in plumbing solutions for residential and commercial buildings to the mining and mineral extraction industry. ?We have a lot of applications in the mining industry.?We have a lot of applications in the mining industry throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico and continue to expand in the mining industry,? Tom Shields, Viega?s director for industrial accounts explained. ?Since we made the decision to increase our presence in the industrial markets, we have been aggressive and more than 240 applications have been approved by our engineering department in Germany.? Getting approval from Viega?s engineering department is no small feat. During a tour of the manufacturing facilities in Ennest and Großheringen, Germany, Mining Engineering, as well as a select few other publications and clients, were shown Viega?s manufacturing process. At the Ennest facility, hundreds of millions of fittings are produced, and each one is inspected mechanically and with a laser at the end of the production line. With four production facilities in Germany and one in the United States, Viega is able to ship to anywhere in the world. The company distributes everything from fittings to stainless steel pipe.

Methods of utilizing flocculants as settling and filter aids for mineral processing slurries are reviewed. Broad chemical classifications and techniques for proper dilution, multiple addition, and combination treatments are discussed. A variety of custom built and commercially available systems for make up and delivery of flocculants to the application points are in use through- out the mining industry. Those concepts which, in the author's opinion, are particularly important to the successful make up and use of flocculants are presented in relationship to the available make up and feed systems. Actual industrial applications are included in the presentation.

The truly educated man is better prepared to meet the challenge of the times. This challenge can be either beneficial or harmful depending upon one s orientation, Certainly man can no longer continue in the way of his father or even in the manner of his own previous experience as he seeks self-fulfillment, unless he is willing to sacrifice inner integrity--unless he is willing to compromise self-determination and self-expression. He must make a choice as society moves rapidly into high gear in the areas of automation and cybernetics. Industry, a unit of society, has a high stake in meeting this challenge, The better prepared and more mature its personnel, the better the end result as it attempts to meet the challenge. It therefore has a vital concern in proper training of such personnel, that their contribution will be of maximum quality. The specialized training required demands a broad liberal arts background which gives the individual a wider perspective upon which to base judgment. This greatly aids his development as he enters graduate school or goes directly into industry. In either case, his value to industry is enhanced. It would seem that the small liberal arts college provides the best environment for such a program, Consideration of several factors will, I hope, throw some light on the severity of the problem.

A couple of miles southwest of the town of Saltville in the western tip of Virginia is a little village called Plasterco. Gypsum has been produced in this area since about the year 1815, being originally found as small outcrops at the surface. Production in the early days was very small, and the use of the mineral was limited to that of "land plaster" or ground gypsum which was spread on the land to sweeten the soil. In the late 1800's, a small calcining plant was constructed and the production of gypsum plaster began. About this same time, the surface rock was depleted and it became necessary to begin underground mining operations in order to maintain a continuous supply of raw material. The United States Gypsum Company became interested in this property in 1909, and has operated there ever since, having enlarged the calcining mill and built a plant for the manufacture of gypsum wall-board in the middle 1920's. Production of gypsum continues from underground' mining operations, and the present mine at Plasterco is now about 1,000 feet below the surface, making it the deepest gypsum mine' in the world.

Introduction Ventilation engineers have always felt somewhat uneasy when, in the normal course of their work, they are forced to consider the flow in any mine entry as "wholly rough." Under such conditions in pipes, friction factor is no longer a function of Reynolds' number. This assumption serves to simplify the problem and overcome an evident lack of information concerning the variability of K-factors. During the summer of 1985, a unique opportunity to investigate the reaction of friction factor to changing flow rates presented itself. A Utah coal mine was temporarily directing a substantial airflow through a single entry. By regulating the quantity, it would be possible to obtain a wide range of Reynolds' numbers in an entry composed of two distinct coal thicknesses. This paper describes the conducted study. The theory covering basic fluid flows in pipes that led to the questioning of constant K-factor is presented first. Experimental procedures are then described, including the use of a view camera in determining entry area and perimeter. Finally, a discussion of the observed variations in friction factor versus Reynolds' number is given. Changes of 34% and 45% in K-factor were seen in this study for the two entry heights. The implications of ignoring the relationship in this case and a call for an expanded research effort are also presented. Theory Since a gas is a fluid, the general principles of fluid mechanics are equally applicable to airflow in a mine entry as they are to the flow of water in a pipe. The Darcy equation is, therefore, equally applicable to pressure drop calculations in both situations. This famous formula was originally derived for use in circular cross sections and may be modified for any other shape by the use of hydraulic radius (defined as the area divided by the "wetted" perimeter). The Darcy equation relates the physical parameters of the pipe (diameter, length, and resistance to flow) and fluid velocity to the energy needed to create the flow. A study by Nikuradse (1933) brought to light the suspected dependency of the friction factor term in the Darcy equation upon Reynolds' number. By performing a large number of laboratory experiments, he established some basic concepts upon which other researchers built. Chief among these contributors was Colebrook (1939). Using commercial-grade pipe, he established an empirical relationship between Darcy's friction factor and Reynolds' number that is still in use today. If Colebrook's system of equations is plotted on log-log paper (as was done by Moody, 1944), the curves have some very distinct features. Of importance to the subject at hand is the relative response of friction factor to Reynolds' number at a given relative roughness. Simply stated, a pipe can appear to be either smooth or rough, depending on the flow conditions. As the Reynolds' number increases, the friction factor decreases at a decreasing rate until it becomes nearly a constant value. At this point, the flow is said to be "wholly rough." It is upon this condition that many traditional ventilation solution methods depend. For calculating pressure drops in a mine entry, Atkinson's equation is much more popular than the Darcy equation. Both of these formulas describe the same phenomenon and so have similar forms and functions. The K-factor in the Atkinson equation is equivalent to the Darcy friction factor and can be related by simply changing units, equating the pressure drops, and canceling like terms. A generalized form of this relationship is presented below as equation 1. K = yf/28,800g = [q]f/28,800 (1) where K is Atkinson's friction factor in kg/m3 (lb - min2/ft4), Y is the specific volume in Nt/m3 (lb per cu ft), p is the fluid density in kg/m3 (slugs per cu ft), g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s2 or 32.2 fpsz), and f is Darcy's friction factor, which is unitless. The objective behind Eq. 1 is to show the strong correlation between K and f. Since these two quantities differ only by a constant (q]/28,000), the assumed independence of K-factor and Reynolds' number is suspect in light of the known response of f. Unfortunately, the formulation does not provide information concerning the actual relationship, as entry geometry likely plays a major role in the response curve. Only an indirect indication that such a relationship might exist is provided. Previous work on this subject was performed by Thomas Falkie (1958). The study involved a laboratory model composed of sections of straight, steel duct and a range of Reynolds' numbers from 15,610 to 137,200. Results from this work show a variation in friction factor with Reynolds' number in much the same way as it was found to vary in pipes. Over the range of velocities examined, a decrease of approximately 38% in K-factor was observed. This previous experience provides additional incentives to investigate the phenomenon under field conditions. Past model studies done at the University of Utah by Ozukurt (1945), Biron (1944), and Greenhalgh (1942) present similar evidence of this variability. Magnesium is listed as a key critical raw material in a report by the European Commission that evaluated raw materials based on supply risk versus economic importance [1]. It has extraordinary properties, such as nontoxicity, inertness, high melting point, stability, low weight, chemical resistance, electrical insulation, optical transparency, corrosion-resistant behavior and refractory nature. It is widely used in the areas of agriculture; the environment, for antibacterial and water-purification purposes; electronics; automotive; drug delivery; ceramics; construction, as filler in brick; and concrete production, in the forms of magnesium oxychloride and magnesium oxysulfate. Magnesium oxide (MgO) particles can be produced through the calcination of magnesite ore at different calcination conditions depending on the desired quality of the product, classified as fused (2,800 °C), dead-burned (>1,400 °C), hard-burned (1,000–1,400 °C), or light-burned MgO (700–1,000 °C) [2]. However, the global availability of magnesite ore is limited.

Calcium-based scale precipitation is a common problem in mill reclaim waters. An accumulation of these adherent deposits can result in a rapid reduction in water flow, loss of pump efficiency and eventual interruption in ore production. Heap leach applications can also experience the added problems of plugged sprinkler heads, blinded leach pads and fouled carbon columns when scale control is not maintained. The primary cause of scaling in precious metal recovery is the relative insolubility of calcium carbonate. The presence of the calcium ion and bicarbonate alkalinity is common in almost every water source. If the temperature or pH of the water is allowed to increase, the bicarbonate breaks down to carbonate and combines with calcium by the following reaction: Ca +2 +2HCO3 ? CaCO3 + H2 + CO2

The control of soils has been found to be one of the highest priority factors influencing the return of reclaimed prime farmland to production. The compaction of soil is primarily a result of the movement of high ground pressure wheel scrapers and dozers over soils during the soils replacement and regarding process and occurs to a maximum depth of about 1.2 m (4 ft) The deleterious effects of soil compaction can be controlled by deep soil loosening to a depth of 1.2 m (4 ft). Most farm tillage equipment can only loosen soils to a maximum depth of 0.33 m (1.0 ft). Deeper soil loosening equipment, in the 0.33-1.2 m (1.0-4.0 ft) range is currently avail- able in the U.S. and abroad which may have potential for application on reclaimed prime farmland. This study has appraised such available equipment and the results indicate that a few manufacturers in the U.S., West Germany, and England market static and vibratory soil loosening equipment which have potential for deeper soil loosening of reclaimed prime farmland.

The key objective of forming a cartel is to increase profits to members of the cartel by taking the following action: a) control output; and b) control price. However, while attempting to obtain monopoly profits the cartel members have to contend with costs associated with cartelization and such costs include the following: political costs; the cost of coordinating output and price; organizational costs (such as cheating); and administrative costs (such as the cost of attending cartel meetings). The objective of commodity exchanges is to provide an open, free market where buyers and sellers may openly complete transactions and pricing information can be immediately disseminated. These transactions include the following: a) to provide facilities for "hedging", or transferring price risk from buyers and sellers of physical commodities to "speculators" through the medium of buying and selling futures contracts, and b) taking physical delivery of metal on due dates.

In 1994, ASARCO's Mission Complex Mine Planning Department designed a new stripping schedule to take advantage of reserve opportunities. Based upon the new stripping design, overburden removal exceeded available hauling capacity. This increased hauling capacity requirement required that ASARCO consider alternative technologies for material transport. In 1997, ASARCO Mission Complex completed the purchase and installation of a 3.5 km, 8,600-tph conveyor system to transport waste material. The conveyor system is composed of two apron feeder/sizer units manufactured by Mining Machine Development LTD. and a conveyor system manufactured by Krupp-Robbins. This paper will review the option of truck haulage versus conveyor transport for overburden removal by (1) describing engineering studies contributing to the solution, (2) researching proactive options to create alternative management decisions, and (3) revealing final results of the project.

"During the past nine years the number of cellular phones connected to a network has increased from 34 percent of the world’s population in 2005 to 93 percent in 2014. These phones are powered by a combination of materials including elements such as gold, silver, copper and rare earths. And, as more parts of the world become connected to networks, the number of phones being produced, and the elements they will need, will continue to increase. The demand comes as prices for these commodities are slumping and access to the commodities is getting more difficult, technically and socially.These mobile devices have connected people around the world in ways that could not have been imagined two decades before, and, ironically, this communication has strengthened opposition to the development of the mines that produce the very materials they need to operate.In his keynote address to the 2014 SME Arizona Conference at the JW Starr Pass Resort in Tucson, AZ, on Dec. 8, 2014, John O. Marsden, SME President and president of Metallurgium, spoke to more than 500 attendees about the challenge to produce the materials that society needs while at the same time challenging the general public’s perception of mining that is often inaccurate and less than favorable.Marsden highlighted the amount of raw materials that will be needed not just for phones, but also for things such as automobiles, including electric cars, as a way to illustrate the importance of mining. Even so-called green products such as Tesla cars, which require about 317 kg (700 lbs) of aluminum, 13 kg (30 lbs) of copper and 36 kg (80 lbs) of cobalt for their eco-friendly batteries, will need materials mining provides.These are some of the numbers that the general public is often unaware of. They are part of the necessary things that mining provides for society but are rarely reported on. Instead, it is the accidents like the tailings spill at the Mount Polley Mine in British Columbia and at the Buena Vista Mine (Sonora, Mexico) that grab headlines and stick in the minds of the public, adding more challenges to an industry that already has its own complex technical challenges to deal with."

"In today’s challenging mining environment the “Big Picture” (Caterpillar, 2013) approach to mining is often neglected. With haulage costs approaching up to 45 % of the overall mining costs, all too often the load-haul-dump- return cycle is not investigated in its completeness. This paper will discuss the aspects of taking the time to observe an operation from the “Big Picture” approach. In today’s mining business miners, engineers, trainers, supervisors, and managers have ever increasing roles and responsibilities as never seen before in the past decade. The endless human resource, safety, environmental, cost control issues and performance initiatives, detracts from precious time that may have been dedicated to examining the day to day operation. Having examined numerous mining operations over the past several years, one common denominator is lack of time to properly observe operating practices in the field and recognize both positive and negative observations. The old fashioned vocation of observing the operation to assess the haulage, loading and maintenance processes to adjust, maximize or enhance operations have sometimes vanished. Four areas to be discussed in this paper: (1) Look at the “Big Picture”(Caterpillar, 2013), (2) Use common sense, (3) Areas identified for biggest improvements in the operations, (4) Observation of small details for big impacts to lower cost per ton and increased production. The objective of this paper is to provide low cost recommendations to lower cost per ton and increase production. INTRODUCTION Whether miners claim to have been around and experienced it all or the “rookie” on the mine site, miners are expected to execute the mine plan at the lowest cost possible. So why is it so difficult to execute this task? Shouldn’t supervisors just have to man the equipment, tell operators to have a safe day and tally up the numbers at the end of the shift? And let the technology system do the rest? So what could go wrong? Lots. Mining companies seek help from consultants, training departments, performance reporting systems and an arsenal of resources. Armed with all this information, the supervisors just hop in the pick-up and tell the shovel operator to speed up. Sounds simple enough. When the improvements don’t happen, what could have gone wrong? It comes down to people, the simple things that were not executed over the months previously and as a result today the mines performance is not where it should be. A mine is built by people. Managers who have the vision to develop the ore body in a manner that follows sound engineering practices. The infrastructure to mill the ore and support the equipment needed to move the material. Along the way equipment is procured and operators trained to run the gear. Engineers and geologists set up the design, the material movement, and haulage routes. Sounds easy to this point. So, why mine after mine is there this constant struggle to move more with less and get the costs down? Understanding how to make “Great Miners” out of these people is critical to lowering your cost per ton."

It is a matter of importance to use the lower alkyl monoethers of propylene glycol (polyPGME) as a frother in sulfide mineral flotation, for their compounds are highly soluble in water and are surface active frothers to some extent. The purpose of this study is to clarify fundamental roles of frothers in sulfide mineral flotation by investigating the effects of polyPGME on the floatability of galena with xanthate and adsorption property those ethers at the liquid/air interface. Fundamental investigation on the flotation of sulfide minerals using o,o-dialkyl dithiophosphates has been carried out through galena floatability tests in the following two cases:(l)single use of dithiophosphate for sulfide mineral collection and (2) joint use of dithiophosphates for its collection.

Experience from Australia had identified what is referred to as nonconventional surface subsidence behavior. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence,” and far-field horizontal movements, occurring even beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behavior recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam, leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900 ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 to 720 ft. Investigations, including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program, found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and farfield horizontal movements may have occurred, resulting from the adjacent mining. Besides discussing the phenomenon of nonconventional subsidence behavior and the Ryerson State Park case study, this paper includes an assessment of the mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioral mechanisms.

Advances in borehole geophysical research for mineral assaying, and remote detection of mineralization away from the borehole. Nuclear activation measurement research has provided accurate in situ assays of economic metals with neutron-gamma activation, using a high resolution intrinsic-germanium detector. Although nuclear activation analysis is the present "best-hope" for obtaining in situ assays for some elements, gamma-gamma and magnetic susceptibility measurements can provide accurate assays for lead-zinc and magnetite, respectively. Borehole optical spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence are being investigated as possible in situ assaying techniques for some minerals. More laboratory and field calibration research is needed before nonlinear complex resistivity (NLCR) can be routinely used as a quantitative assaying tool. Field tests have shown that variations in the local geologic environment can affect the quantitative accuracy of assay values from downhole NLCR measurements. Deeply penetrating borehole geophysical methods are increasingly being used for mineral exploration as drilling costs and exploration have increased. Borehole electrical measurements have been shown to be useful for detecting conductive orebodies that are not interesected by a drillhole. Hole-to-surface resistivity, and surface-to-hole time-domain electromagnetics are demonstrated to be particularly effective for defining mineralized zones in a massive sulfide environment. Borehole gravity meters and three-component magnetometers have been developed and should prove useful for defining geologic anomalies away from the drillhole.

This paper deals with drilling large diameter shafts for the mining and construction industry with diameters in excess of 3 feet to more than 20 feet in diameter. It discusses appropriate applications of the rotary drill method, linings for large diameter shafts, circulation systems,, and the limitations of the method. Each specific rotary drill method is determined by the geology of the area, the depth to be drilled and the formation fluids encountered. Shaft lining or casing must be improved to result in lighter weight, higher strength and lower cost. All phases of rotary drilling equipment must be improved to drill shafts in excess of 10 feet in diameter. As these goals are reached, more shafts of large diameter will be drilled by the rotary method for the mining and construction industry.

Hydraulic concentration of minerals has been practiced for a good many years. Until recently, however, the practice has been limited to a multiplicity of small pockets and relatively low tonnages and flows. The adaptation of the SiphonSizer to the concentration and classification of magnetite has changed this concept. Some fifty commercial units are currently in operation on magnetite, varying in size from 16 ft diameter circular unit to a 25 ft by 100 ft rectangular unit. Additional units up to 38 ft diameter are under construction. Depending upon the application in the flowsheet, upgrading-varies from 0.75% to 14% Fe in a single stage. To those not familiar with taconite processing, the importance of the struggle to economically remove as much silica as possible may not be fully appreciated. These figures pertaining only to transportation may be thought-provoking. If a 10,000,000 ton per year plant could reduce the silica content of their concentrate by 17, a savings in boat freight alone would amount to 100,000 tons at $2.00 per ton annually.

This document describes the challenging task of mining through tiebacks using a 21'-8" diameter Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) as part of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project. The mining operation involves navigating through 17 tie-backs that are evenly spaced at 8-foot intervals, with many intersecting the full face of the cutterhead. Detailed analysis and review of TBM parameters specific to this area have been conducted to ensure operational efficiency and safety. Hyperbaric interventions have been planned and coordinated, encompassing pre-mining preparations, continuous monitoring and adjustments during the mining process, as well as post-mining measures. The document highlights the complexity and importance of strategic planning and execution to successfully overcome the tie-back intersections during the mining operation.

One of the most dramatic innovations in the materials handling industry has been the development of stacker cranes and automated material handling systems. The stacker crane with its many capabilities and the development of reliable industrial automation controls have combined to produce dramatic achievements in an area once characterized by inefficiency lack of management attention, and capital investment. In many areas of application however, stacker cranes and high rise storage systems have been designed and installed with insufficient thought given to their integration into the overall operations of the plant or distribution facility. This paper will look at some new and interesting breakthroughs in the integration of stacker cranes and high rise storage systems into the total manufacturing plant system. In this paper we will refer to both bridge type stacker cranes and aisle stackers. The bridge type stacker crane was developed first and was initially developed with forks or other handling devices hoisted up and down a rigid or telescopic mast. This mast system was suspended from a trolley mounted on an overhead crane bridge. Today, the primary application of the bridge type stacker is in warehousing systems for handling basic metal products such as coils, bars, sheets and plates. There is no question that the bridge type stacker has achieved notable results in storage and handling of these commodities. However, a new area for stacker crane application has been developing which in many cases over-shadows the accomplishments in the storage area. This is the application of the bridge stacker as an integral part of the manufacturing processes, or in other terms the production applications of stacker cranes. The stacker crane has a number of attributes which makes these applications very important. First, the crane bridge provides the stable platform for the mounting of machinery which can accommodate the hoisting and lateral movement of large capacity loads. Today stacker cranes are being built with capacities of up to 30 - 40 tons. The bridge cranes can easily accomplish accommodation Of these large tonnages. Secondly, the mast system provides a stable platform for the mounting of a wide variety of manipulating devices which can be used for the placement of material into manufacturing processes, the extraction of this material from these processes, and movement to other points in the process area. These attributes combined with excellent operator control and safety have led to development of the stacker crane as a production tool.

Operators at modern mining sites, such as the Eagle Mine, located in Western Marquette County of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, understand that using specialized equipment reduces worker exposure, offers the safest mode of production and provides the most cost-effective lasting results.“Safety is a top priority for us,” said Ted Lakomowski, lead reliability technician at the Eagle Mine. “When we experienced clogging and downtime at the processing mill, the crew naturally swung into action to resolve it, but we immediately sought a safer long-term solution.”Stope mining for nickel and copperOwned by Lundin Mining, a globally diversified base metals mining company headquartered in Toronto, ON, Canada, the Eagle Mine is the only primary nickel mine in the United States, producing 1.5 percent of the world’s total nickel production. The first operation permitted under Michigan’s Part 632 Non-Ferrous Mineral Mining Law, it opened in 2014 and is expected to produce 163 kt (360 million lbs) of nickel, 134 kt (295 million lbs) of copper and small amounts of other metals over its estimated nine-year lifespan.The company extracts approximately 2 kt/d (2,200 stpd) from the underground nickelcopper mine using a bench-and-fill stoping process. Accessed from the surface by specialized underground trucks, the vehicles carry about 45,400-kg (100,000-lb) loads through a 1.6-km (1- mile) long and 5.4-m (18-ft) diameter ramp shaft descending into the earth at a 13 percent grade. Stoping is a bottom-up method that involves systematically blasting columns of loosened ore that is then mucked by front loaders into trucks and backfilled using cemented and uncemented rockfill."
