The logic and importance of marketing in the industrial minerals industry is generally recognized by those of us intimately involved in this industry. The illogical instances where marketing is ignored in evaluating projects or poorly implemented in operations are also well known. The interplay between these two extremes is interesting territory and is explored commencing with a logical progression of a metal mine that became an industrial minerals mine and ending with the most illogical and failure-prone decision common to the minerals industry today. This paper will demonstrate how: 1. A logical progression of marketing expertise can result in previously unseen benefits to a minerals venture. 2. Logic can turn to illogic due to market conditions and price fluctuations. 3. How operations can turn marketing logic into illogical results. 4. Short term "logic" is often illogical.

Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modeled with conditional simulation, which generates multiple possible realizations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable). M ethods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time-consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modeling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimization, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially available software. An example for R esolute M ining Ltd.?s Syama gold project in M ali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. First, the talc sample was wet-ground in a stirred media mill for five different lengths of time (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35 and 50 µm), solid ratio (2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 percent), and sonication time (60, 120 and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50 ), reduction ratio and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were highly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the structural properties of talc particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.

"This paper presents an overview and performance evaluation for a reconditioned decades aged open type hard rock TBM utilized for the twin running tunnel excavations of the Second Avenue Subway Project in Manhattan, New York. The TBM tunnel lengths are approximately 2,370 m (7,800 ft, east TBM Tunnel) and 2,190 m (7,200 ft, west TBM Tunnel) with a 6.7 m (22 ft) bored diameter. This “senior” TBM mined through metamorphic rocks consisting of schist, granofels, and pegmatite, and encountered various adverse geological structures, including some relatively heavy groundwater inflows. The ground support was generally pattern friction rock bolts, and steel sets were used in poor ground. This paper presents TBM characteristics and the subsequent performance, such as machine utilization, downtime, cutter consumption rate, net penetration rate, and daily advance rate. Machine operating parameters including thrust, torque, gripping force, and cutterhead RPM, are compared with various accompanying ground conditions. The performance changes between the adjacent tunnel sections are also presented. INTRODUCTION Project Overview The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction (MTACC)’s Second Avenue Subway (SAS) Program consists of four (4) phases from 125th Street to Manhattan Battery Park along the 2nd Avenue (see Figure 1) in Manhattan New York. As a part of Phase 1, Contract 1 was awarded to S3 JV (Skanska/Schiavone/Shea) to build a TBM launch box and subsequent twin TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street under 2nd Avenue. Contract 1 was one of the key contracts in Phase 1 to pre-excavate through the footprint of the follow-on underground stations (72nd St. Station, 86th St. Station, and 96th St. Station) by hard rock TBM excavation. The project team included Client MTACC, S3 Tunnel Constructors, Designer, Aecom-Arup JV, and Consultant Construction Manager, Parsons Brinckerhoff. The major elements of Contract 1 included construction of TBM Launch Box supported by secant pile and slurry walls and mining of twin TBM tunnels with a combined tunnel length of approximately 4,560 m (15,000 ft). The dimension of the TBM launch box was approximately 247 m (810 ft) long from 92nd Street to 95th Street, 21 m (70 ft) to 24 m (80ft) wide along the 2nd Avenue, and 18 m (60 ft) to 21 m (70 ft) deep from the ground surface. The launch box was later used for the follow-on 96th Street Station."

Techniques of testing perlite require a combination of art and science. The modifications made to the perlite Corp. vertical laboratory furnace include addition of instrumentation, flowmeters, vibrators, automatic feeders, and regulators. The basic testing sequence consists of expanded density, furnace yield, compacted density, percent sinkers, and compaction resistance. These tests are modified versions of those specified by the Perlite Institute. This sequence is designed as a preliminary evaluation of a material's suitability for horticultural-aggregate end uses rather than a detailed measure of filtration capability.

Theory and practice are described for a new processing method capable of precise mineral separations based primarily on differences in particle specific gravities at specific gravity split points from 1.5 to 21.0 and beyond. Separations are analogous to those achieved using rotating heavy media, except that the effective specific gravity of the fluid is created magnetically using a relatively dilute, low-viscosity, water-based magnetic fluid. Results reported here for a large, laboratory flow-through separator include: 1) 99% grade with 97% recovery in single pass separation of a suite of heavy minerals from quartz at I0 kg/h, 14 tph/rm2 of duct cross section, 2) 90% grade and recovery in single-pass separation of mixtures of sand-size, non-magnetic rutile (4.23 specific gravity) and zircon (4.72 specific gravity) at throughputs of 35 kg/h, 47 tph/rm2 of duct cross section, 3) partition curves having Ep90-10 transition widths 5% or less of mineral specific gravities, and 4) essential confirmation of the theory.

The kaolinite presence in bauxite ores increases caustic soda consumption during the digestion step in the Bayer process. Depending on the kaolinite content, the utilization of the ore in the Bayer process may be unfeasible. This investigation addressed the variables involved in kaolinite flotation through microflotation experiments in a Hallimond tube and zeta potential determinations. The tests were performed with a pure sample of kaolinite (96%). Five collectors were tested: Duomeen T (DT), cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), dodecylamine (DDA) and Flotigam EDA (EDA). Four of them performed well as collectors, at a concentration of 1x10-4 mol/L: CPC, CTAB, DDA and EDA. The kaolinite isoelectric point (IEP) was determined at pH = 4.6. The IEP was shifted towards higher pH values in the collectors? presence, indicating specific adsorption onto the mineral surface.

The advent of the process control computer with its capabilities of monitoring, storage, and real-time control has revolutionized control technology in the mineral industry. Initial efforts to introduce the computer into process control began in the early 1960's. However, it wasn't until the last decade with the introduction of integrated circuits and minicomputers that truly successful applications became visible. Computer hardware and real-time operating software have improved to the point that they rarely provide major problems in the implementation of successful control systems. At this time the most prevalent problems and obstacles affecting the successful implementation of a control system are as follows: (1) reliable and representative sampling systems; (2) rugged and reliable process sensors; (3) the availability of well-defined control strategies; (4) the willingness of plant management to provide the continuous support necessary to acquire and/or train appropriate personnel in the operation and maintenance of advanced control systems. Discussion of these problems and of the instrumentation required for the successful application of computers in minerals processing plants follows. In order to enhance this discussion the remainder of this subsection is broken up into individual mineral processing categories.

Volcanogenic base metal ores contain about 0.5 to 7 g/T Au, commonly as an intermetallic compound with Ag and/or Hg, and to a small extent • "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Au-bearing phase (electrum, Au-Ag-Hg alloy, etc.) generally occurs as fracture fillings in pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, and rarely • minute inclusions in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Au-bearing phase in fractures generally occurs • small grains, and is frequently associated with galena, tetrahedrite and other late minerals. The gold is readily liberated from fractures and recovered by flotation in Ca concentrates. Copper concentrates usually recover around 60% of the gold when the ore grade is around 3 g/t. Higher recoveries are obtained for higher ore grades, and lower recoveries for lower grade ores. Lead and zinc circuits act as scavengers for gold, and recover all the exposed gold attached to small particles. Only unliberated gold, "invisible gold" and very minute gold grains attached to large particles are lost to tailings.

In order to obtain a better understanding of the explosion risk at the coal face, anomalies in the ignition sensitivity for different modes of ignition of hybrid mixtures of dust, methane and air were studied. Results indicated that the explosible behaviour of the working environment is highly dependent upon the ignition source and the fuel composition. For example, depending on the ignition source, the same hybrid mixture can be inert or extremely explosible. In conclusion, it is stressed how the explosion risk can be expressed in terms of a safety factor which takes into account the influence of both the fuel and the ignition source.

Risk is a major factor in all mining activities, arising from many internal and external variables. The authors? research has resulted in a systematic method for the quantification of risk in mining projects (Park, 2012). This is the second part of a three-part series. The first part was published in the October 2013 issue of Minining Engineering magazine and can be found here at www.me.smenet.org. This paper discusses methods of assessing the overall risk associated with those variables, and presents a statistical model based on a survey of 31 experts. The third paper, to be publised at www.me.smenet.org on Oct. 14, presents an evaluation of the statistical model, using data from previous mining investment decisions in which the authors have been involved.

Since the critical role of oxygen in xanthate flotation of sulphides was established (1) subsequent studies have been concerned mainly with the galena-xanthate system. It is therefore surprising to find at the conclusion of a comprehensive review of the topic by Granville, Finkelstein and Allison (2) that it was not possible for them to draw unequivocable conclusions on the mechanism of xanthate adsorption. It was apparent that some new advances were likely if systems other than galena-xanthate (Pbs/x-) were examined. (2) Specifically a less reactive sulphide such as ZnS may interact with flotation reagents at a slower rate than PbS and more information per unit time gathered. Again ZnS is far less reactive electrochemically than PbS or stated equivalently, it is a poorer semiconductor than PbS. More importantly, the ability of ZnS to act as a semi-conductor can be controlled photochemically rather than by direct doping reactions for which it is difficult to assess the uniformity of doping. Thus the conductivity of ZnS can be made the same as that of PbS by irradiating the ZnS with ultraviolet light at circa 360 n.m. (3)

The City of Akron will construct the Northside Interceptor Tunnel (NSIT) project to control and reduce combined sewer overflows. One component of the project a large diameter tunnel diversion / flow control structure that will facilitate tunnel storage, divert dry weather flow to the treatment plant, and divert large wet weather events that are greater than the tunnel capacity to the Cuyahoga River. The structure is designed to pass up to 1.2 billion gallons per day of flow and includes floatables screening. This paper will discuss project background, factors that influenced shaft location, and options evaluated to manage the large design flows.

Applications of machine learning and robotics in the tunneling industry are still nascent. Research and development are ongoing in TBM guidance; prediction of TBM cutter wear and tunneling induced ground deformations; and robotic arms for segment installation, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of TBM cutting tools. This paper presents a case study of geological profile reconstruction using multimodal machine learning. The results from this study can aid the development and application of multimodal AI technologies to generate data reports and geological profiles in real time, taking voice recordings, photos, or videos obtained directly from the field as inputs.

Major scientific discoveries cannot be programmed. New or frontier technology, however, can and should be planned. It is the vital force underlying the business strategy of a vigorous and profitable mining and metals company. Generally, a radical departure from existing technology is required to 1) Enhance the competitive value of ore reserves, i.e., to turn low grade or marginal reserves into competitive reserves. 2) To increase yield and decrease costs. 3) To decrease investment. 4) To increase mine life. 5) To improve product quality to meet market demands. The very definition of frontier technology implies that it is so different that the old plant, if already in use, will not be directly suitable to use the new technology. Therefore, a priori, we know that the commercialization of frontier technology would very likely involve new investment. The recommended technique of economic and technical analyses, I propose to call "Success Analysis.'' Simply stated, it forces us, by step- by-step procedure, to ask "what is needed to succeed in this particular project." Therefore, the first step is to identify what is meant by "success." The definition of "success" requires an agreement with top management or sponsors of the project as to what constitutes "success" in their minds as contrast to the technical people perception of "success." In general, top management would define success as meeting: 1) The technical objectives, i.e., technology being developed would produce the desired product at the acceptable quality. 2) Financial objectives, i.e., when commercialized, the project's capital cost, operating costs and return on investment are better than the projects they would normally fund. The return has to be better because new technology is inherently riskier. 3) Marketing objectives in that the project will produce product of acceptable quality in timely manner, i.e., scale-up to commercial plant would not cause undue delays in start-up and that large fix-up expenditure would not be required to protect the projected return on the investment. Many projects are started in the laboratory to develop "Frontier Technology" in mineral processing. Most of these efforts are never commercialized. There are many causes of these failures. The major causes are listed below: 1) Inadequate communication with the sponsors of the project so that project objectives are defined and agreed to by all. 2) Ill-defined technical problems. 3) Incomplete development of technology. This has two major components: a. Incorrect scale-up and engineering. b. Inadequate start-up and maintenance planning. 4) Incomplete and over-optimistic process economics. 5) Lack of understanding of the future behavior of the marketplace. 6) Failure to complete R&D effort by the time it is needed. 7) Incorrect projections of human resources required; that is, technical, managerial and operating. 8) Lack of realistic forecast of the expenditures required for commercialization of the R&D effort. These pitfalls can be avoided by comprehensive planning and the use of success analysis technique. The major elements in "Success Analysis" are: 1) Identification of the "need" for new technology. 2) Unbiased and complete scale-up engineering. 3) Acceptable economic feasibility with enough margin of error in the sale prices and operating costs to justify the inherent risks in frontier technology. 4) Timing for availability of investment capital and markets. Many failures in the development of frontier technology are preordained because the initial selection of the research project has been without adequate attention to the needs of the industry. Many very innovative hydrometallurgical processes for recovery of copper from concentrates were developed in the past twenty years. They have not adapted except to a very minor extent because they did not satisfy the success analysis criteria. Over the past decade, the number of contractors working in underground coal mines has nearly doubled; however, the effect this has had on the industry's injury rates has been the subject of much speculation. The confusion exists because the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database does not assign contractor hours to the individual mining operations where they worked. To better understand the safety record of the contractor segment of the industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the data contained in the MSHA database. The first part of the study compared overall contractor and operator trends from 1983 to 2009 related to employment, hours worked and injury rate. One unexpected finding was that the larger contractors tended to have higher injury rates than the smaller ones. The second part of the study directly addressed the role of contractors on the safety record of 10 large underground coal mines. A detailed analysis provided both injuries and estimated contractor hours worked at these mines for the period 1992-2007. Comparison between the estimated contractor injury rates and the reported operator injury rates at these mines indicated that the contractor injury rates were significantly higher at most of the operations studied. Unlike traditional mining on land or ?dry? mining, relatively little is known of ?wet? or offshore mining within the industry. However, dredge mining has several benefits over dry mining, including high unit capacity, as well as lower operating and transport costs. IHC Merwede, a company with expertise in wet mining, is keen to raise awareness and help the industry move forward from dry to wet mining. The idea of mining offshore is not a new one. With global head grades declining, certain operations still have extensive resources of lower grade mineralization in their concession area. These operations require a lower cost, high volume solution for which dredge mining can provide an economic alternative. Interest in dredge mining has recently returned, and there is an increasing tendency to use dredge mining for the removal of overburden or the rehandling of tailing ponds.

The Fabrica Mine of the Brazilian iron ore company Ferteco mines on an extremely inhomogenous ore deposit. A large amount of the crude ore consists of fines minus 100 micron which cannot be sold without further treatment because of its chemical and physical properties. In order to make full use of the mined crude ore an expansion program has been realized which incorporates among others a concentrator to produce classified blast furnace ore , sinter feed and pellet feed. The pellet feed is converted in a 2.5 million tons per year Lurgi Dravo plant into high grade pellets. The paper discusses the selection of the concentration process, the pelletizing process and describes the experiences with the operation plant during the startup and the first years of operation.

Coarse silica flotation from intermediate pebble (IP) product has been carried out a pilot plant Dual Extraction Column (DEC) at an operational phosphate mine in Central Florida. The solids feed rate ranged from 4.16 – 5.3 TPH while the amine dosages ranged from 0.32 – 0.93 lb/T. The optimum amine dosage when using recycled process water was deter-mined to be 0.6 lb/T. With a feed containing 40-45 BPL and 38-45% insol, the results show that the IP can be upgraded to 56-61 BPL and insol of 16-22% at 85-90% BPL recovery. The results show that the DEC is an effective device for flotation of coarse silica from the IP. The advantages of upgrading the IP prior blending with the pebble are presented and discussed.

Preliminary design is underway for a new Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) project that will ensure one of America’s most reliable water systems by providing continued, reliable water service to existing and future customers. The Horizon Lateral is a $1.6 billion water transmission pipeline that includes 7–10 miles of 108-inch finished diameter rock and soft-ground tunnels. The tunnels will traverse volcanic rock in or around the McCullough Mountain Range and the surrounding alluvial basin. The tunneling community will find relevance in hearing about this critical infrastructure project from a leading wholesale water utility owner with a proven track record for on-time, collaborative projects.
